The way Jason Momoa describes Hawaii’s beloved inactive volcano, Mauna Kea, makes you understand why it’s considered sacred(神圣的). "It’s kind of the umbilical cord(脐带) to earth," the actor tells CNN. "You know, if you think about the Hawaiian islands, that’s the biggest mountain in the world, right? All the way up. So Mauna Kea is the most sacred. We call it the belly button, too. That’s like our birthplace. That’s how our islands were formed. So how can that not be sacred?" He would know. Jason, a native of Hawaii, has had a near-constant presence there when he’s not working, fighting with local protestors to stop the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT, which would drill directly into the mountain and invade its precious water supply. So far, protestors have successfully blocked the only road crews seeking to go up the mountain in order to build the billion-dollar observatory. "It started in 2015. What’s happening over there was just not right," Jason says. "And I went over there to meet with everyone to bring the point to the world." Jason joins the protests when he can. He cared so deeply about the preservation of the land that when he had spare time to lend his support, he was there. "You also have to remember, that’s our water source. So having an 18-story building built on top of the tallest mountain from the sea level on our water level is terrible." The Game of Thrones star says he feels the movement is working and describing his part in it as a calling to do what he feels right in his soul. "There’s massive progress that’s bringing our people together," he says, adding, "I think there are a lot of problems in Hawaii. There are a lot of things that have happened in our history, a lot of injustice, and so we’re shining a light on it. People like myself or Dwayne Johnson, Bruno Mars are trying to spread the concern all around the world. For my soul I need to be there." 1.Why is Mauna Kea sacred according to Jason? A.It’s still growing upwards. B.It looks like the belly button. C.It’s the birthplace of Humans. D.It brings the islands into being. 2.What does “It” refer to in Paragraph 4? A.The project of building TMT. B.The event of blocking the road crews. C.The shooting of Game of Thrones. Now it is the time to set your resolutions. As you head into almost a whole year, your first step is to believe you can do it. Here’s how to prepare yourself effectively. 1. Eating better and exercising more are all nice ideas, but they’re too general and don’t give you a plan of action. People often lack motivation when the problem is really a lack of clarity. If you want to eat better, be specific: Resolve to add a fruit or vegetable to your lunch every day, limit fast food to once per week, or have dessert once a week. Make it possible 2.. To eat better, put that bowl of fruit right next to your lunch bag, so you grab an apple or orange every day. To exercise more, you might want to run more. But if you’re a night person, don’t make it harder on yourself by trying to run every morning before work.3. Allow yourself to fail Everyone has occasional slips.4.. 71% of successful resolvers say their first failure strengthened their efforts. Learn to refuse something annoying under high pressure. Even people who don’t like apple pie still eat it when offered politely. Instead, say “No, thanks.” If you do slip, focus on getting back on track, not the slip. Set yourself up for success Do you try to stay off your phone? Get it out of your bedroom by using a standard alarm clock. One alarm clock only costs $6 now. If you want to limit sweets, get them out of your house. Do you want to reduce breaks?5.. A.Speak it to your friends B.Make it as specific as possible C.Stay away from your work’s rest room D.Instead, do it after you finish your work E.But don’t let the occasions occupy your track F.Prove it to yourself with small wins over time G.Avoid resolutions that sound great but are unattainable
A team of scientists says that playing sounds underwater can get fish to return to areas with severely damaged coral reefs(珊瑚礁).In an experiment, they found fish returned after hearing recordings of the sounds like a healthy ocean reef. The research results were reported in Nature Communications. The scientists placed underwater speakers in areas where coral had been dying in Australia’s northern Great Barrier Reef. They played the sounds over a period of about six weeks in 2017 and studied the results. The team reported that twice as many fish arrived in the areas where the sounds of healthy coral were played. The sounds also led to a 50 percent increase in the number of species present in the area, the researchers found. The researchers noted the importance of having many different kinds of fish return to the area. Different species of fish perform many activities that support the ocean environment and sea life. Steve Simpson is a professor at the University of Exeter who helped lead the research. He explained, “Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places. They contain the sounds of many kinds of shrimp, fish and other sea creatures. Young fish listen to these sounds when they are looking for a place to settle. Reefs become extremely quiet when they suffer destruction that is usually related to human-caused pollution. Coral damage can drive shrimp and fish away. But the experiment suggested that the use of underwater loudspeakers was an effective way to get young fish to come back.” Mark Meekan is a fish biologist. He said that the return of the fish is the first step towards seeing major improvements in reef health. “Recovery is underpinned (巩固) by fish that clean the reef and create space for corals to regrow,” he said. University of Bristol professor, Andy Radford, said the underwater sounds are a promising way to fight coral reef damage at the local community level. But he noted that other threats need to be reduced as well. These include climate change, pollution and over fishing. 1.Why can underwater speakers make fish return? A.Because the fish prefer music around their habitats. B.Because they play sounds as a healthy reef does. C.Because the fish know the places with them become better. D.Because they can drive the natural enemies of fishes away. 2.What effect do different kinds of fish have on the ocean according to the text? A.Keeping the ocean’s ecological balance. B.Removing the remarkable noises. C.Preventing the pollution caused by human. D.Driving dangerous creatures away. 3.How does the author prove the significance of this new finding? A.By quoting different authorities’ words. B.By comparing the result with another study’s. C.By offering many statistics. D.By showing the detailed process of experiments. 4.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A.Education. B.Entertainment. C.Environment. D.Economy.
The second little pig was unlucky. He built his house from sticks. It was blown away by a wolf. His brother, by contrast, built a strong house from bricks to prevent the wolf’s attack. However, in the real world it would help reduce pollution and slow global warming if more builders copied the wood-loving second pig. Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by forcing developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards. These standards are less green than they seem. Wind turbines (涡轮) and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much less productive than wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from running a building, not those given out when it was made. Those are thought to account for between 30% and 60% of the total over a structure’s lifetime. Buildings can become greener. They can be made of more recycled wood and parts of them can be prefabricated in off-site factories, greatly reducing truck journeys. But no other building material has environmental certificates as exciting and overlooked as wood. The energy required to produce a wooden beam is one-sixth of that required for a steel one of comparable strength. When a mature tree is cut down, a new one can be planted to replace it, capturing more carbon. After buildings are pulled down, old wooden beams and boards are easy to recycle into new structures. Wood is also a good insulator (隔热材料). A softwood window frame provides nearly 400 times as much insulation as a plain steel and over a thousand times as much as an aluminium (铝) frame. Carpenters’ efforts alone will not bring the environmental cost of the world’s buildings into line. But using wood can do much more than what is appreciated. Thus, the second little pig was not wrong, just before his time. 1.Why is the story about the pigs mentioned? A.To bring up the topic of the text. B.To prove the author’s argument. C.To offer background information. D.To inspire the readers’ imagination. 2.What can we know about the “zero carbon” standards? A.It’s impossible to make them come true. B.They don’t mean no carbon is given out. C.They are only fit for developed countries. D.It’s easy for them to meet today’s needs. 3.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.The ways of making buildings greener. B.The usage of recycled steel in buildings. C.The findings of new research about wood. D.The advantages of wood as building materials. 4.Which can replace the underlined word “prefabricated” in paragraph 3? A.Registered. B.Recycled. C.Constructed. D.Compared.
After having her second child in 2012, Victoria was jobless and lost her clear direction. She found herself suffering depression. “My sister, Karen, suggested I try selling something to do with weddings on eBay,” she said, “when the children were asleep, I learned to design invitations on my laptop. Because I already had a laptop and a printer, the only startup costs were buying some cards and envelopes.” Victoria listed what she made for sale on eBay, but weeks and months passed and she hardly had any sales. Concerned, Karen suggested she should change the designs but Victoria firmly believed that her design was good. But in January 2013, everything changed dramatically. “I remember getting out of the bath one night and I’d made nearly £200 in orders in the time it had taken to have a bath. Now the demand was so huge that I had to buy a bulk-load of cards and envelopes and purchase another printer. I started to work at 7 pm each night and worked into the early hours.” Victoria believes that her affordable wedding invitations are the key. Having something else to focus on, the fog of depression soon lifted. By the end of January she had made an impressive £8,000 in just one month. The business now turns over an incredible £80,000 a year, half of which is profit. She continued: “The money has allowed us to upgrade to a three-bedroom house and we have had some great family holidays.” In October, Victoria was one of eleven eBay sellers recognized at the eBay for Business Awards. “I want to show to other women with little or no experience that even if you’re struggling as I did, you can be a mother and a businesswoman and do both successfully,” smiles Victoria. “I’m a one-woman band but it’s more than enough for me!” 1.What made the most contribution to Victoria’s success? A.The advice from her sister. B.The design of the invitations. C.The help from buyers on eBay. D.The low price of the invitations. 2.How much can Victoria earn by selling the invitations a year? A.£200. B.£8,000. C.£40,000. D.£80,000. 3.What personality does Victoria probably have? A.Cautious. B.Sensitive. C.Easygoing. D.Determined. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.The Cure for Depression B.Defeating Depression with Business C.Selling Wedding Invitations Online D.An Unforgettable Experience

A new Japanese research has suggested that regularly eating mushrooms could help lower the risk of cancer. The researchers found that the men who consumed mushrooms once or twice a week had an 8 percent lower risk of developing cancer, regardless of how much fruit and vegetables, or meat and dairy products they ate—compared to those who ate mushrooms less than once per week. Eating mushrooms more often appeared to bring even bigger benefits, with those who consumed mushrooms three or more times per week showing a 17 percent lower risk than those who ate mushrooms less than once a week. Eating mushrooms also appeared to be particularly beneficial among those who ate a large amount of meat and dairy products, little fruit and few vegetables. The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, are the first to suggest that there may be an association between eating mushrooms and a lower risk of cancer. “Test-tube studies and studies conducted on living organisms have shown that mushrooms have the potential to prevent cancer” said lead researcher Shu Zhang. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study indicating the cancer-preventive potential of mushrooms at a population level.” Zhang added that, “mushrooms are a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, especially L-ergothioneine,” which is believed to help fight against stress, and that is cell imbalance caused by lifestyle choices such as poor diets and exposure to environmental poisons. This imbalance can lead to chronic inflammation, resulting in chronic diseases such as cancer. “Considering the average American consumes less than 5 grams of mushrooms per day, which is lower than that consumed by the participants in this study (7.6 g/day), one would expect that even a small increase in mushroom consumption can offer potential health benefits,” said Zhang. However, Zhang added that, “Although our study suggests regular consumption of mushrooms may reduce the risk of cancer, we also want to emphasize that eating a healthy and balanced diet is much more important than filling your shopping basket with mushrooms.” 1.What is the new Japanese research about? A.Healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of cancer. B.Often eating mushrooms reduces the risk of cancer. C.Drinking dairy products is good for our health. D.Eating fruit and vegetables makes us healthier. 2.Who seem to especially benefit from eating mushrooms? A.People who are over fat and having a poor diet. B.People who are feeling over stressed. C.People who consume much meat but few vegetables and little fruit. D.People who consume many dairy products and suffer cancer. 3.Why can the mushroom help reduce the risk of cancer? A.It avoids the stress from a disease. B.It reduces environmental poisons. C.It hell helps reduce weight. D.It has a source of cancer-preventive. 4.What does the underlined word “inflammation” probably means? A.A state of being physically healthy. B.A state of keeping body balance. C.A physical condition that someone needs to be on a diet. D.A condition that a part of the body becomes red, sore and swollen.
Workers are returning to their careers, or starting new ones after age 65. More than ever, work is where many of us get our sense of purpose. That doesn’t end at age 65. After being retired for only three months, Sue Ellen King returned to work at the University of Florida Health in Jacksonville, Florida, where she had been a care nurse and nursing educator for 38 years. She is now working part-time in a position created just for her. “It’s perfect,” she told The New York Times. “I get the satisfaction of having people appreciate what I do.” With the average life span for those who reach age 64 now getting all the way to 84 years old, those who reach retirement age still have many potential years of work to go. Job sites connected toward part-timers, temporary positions, and some can also turn up opportunities that may lead to longer-term work. Fred Dodd tried a part-time job after his unemployment as a clerk for large banks at age 63. He’d thought about retiring then. “But part of me just wanted to keep working partly for the money, but more just because I felt I wanted to do more in my career,” he said. The retired have the advantage of not needing to focus on the earnings potential of whatever jobs they take on, so these older workers are attracted to more meaningful work. And since they are voluntarily putting their skills and experience to good use, they may well have more flexibility than mid-career people. Two-thirds of retirees who’d come back to the work world were doing meaningful work they enjoyed. Legal work and community service were popular choices, as was teaching—all areas in which older workers might have an opportunity to make their own schedules. Earning more money rarely seems like a bad idea, but it can cause issues for retirees, including effects when they claim Social Security (申请社会保障) benefits early. 1.How does Sue Ellen King like her work? A.Interesting. B.Satisfying. C.Boring. D.Encouraging. 2.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us? A.Giving an example of successful returning to work after retirement. B.Why Sue Ellen King found a nursing job. C.What is Sue Ellen King’s work. D.Giving an example of working full-time in a university. 3.What was the main reason for Fred to have a part-time job? I got this strange idea that I would run for student body president (学生会主席) when I was in the eighth grade. To run for student body president is not a surprising decision for most outgoing and popular people. But in fact, I tended to daydream, read books that were not on the required list, and sat at the table at the cafeteria with the only two friends I had, Denise and Janice. What happened within two months led me to the single best method to succeed in achieving something. Claire was perfect-in-front-of-adults and had decent grades, though she was rude to me, which motivated me to sign up to run against her for student body president. Denise decided we should form a mastermind group to get me elected. We met everyday, right after school, reviewing a list of students. We brainstormed reasons why each one might want to vote, in their own interests for me or more likely against Claire. We used a method we learned from Denise’s sister. It meant that we looked for students who were most likely to influence a group of other students. Those are the people we approached first. My narrow victory was a surprise to many, frankly, including the three of us. That’s how I got my first taste of the power of what’s now called Collective Intelligence. With the right model for how we meet, we become more valuable together than apart. When a group commits to supporting each other by meeting regularly and acting by mutually agreed upon rules of engagement, remarkable things will happen. We tend to bring the best out in each other, as thousands have learned around the world through their mastermind groups. Individuals become tight-knit teams. We become happier and higher-performing with and for each other. It is never too late for you to start your own mastermind group of no more than seven members around a strong sweet spot of mutual interest, which will definitely evolve into something different and more meaningful over the years. 1.Why was it a surprising decision for the author to run for president? A.She was lonely then. B.She was popular. C.She was not very outgoing. D.She often daydreams. 2.What’s the way of Denise’s sister? A.Helping hand out posters. B.Looking for influential people. C.Helping learn from others. D.Helping have public campaigns. 3.How did the author beat Claire? A.Mainly by doing something for others’ interests. B.Mainly by getting help from Denise’s sister. C.Mainly by using her great communicative ability. D.Mainly by making use of group intelligence. 4.What can be the best title for the text? A.Path to Greater Success and Friendship B.Methods to Be Student Body President C.Effective Ways to Find Good Friends D.Clever Ways to Get Support from Others

At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place. This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left. Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts. One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转)and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附 着)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe. Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched dumbstruck(呆若木鸡). The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared. Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌) in. Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere. In the story of “The crow and the Pitcher” from Aesop’s Fables, a thisty crow (乌鸦)drops stones into a narrow jar to raise the low level of water inside so he can take a drink. Now scientists have evidence to back up that story. Crows actually do understand how to make water displacement (移位) work to their advantage, experiments show. The results suggest that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as first-graders. Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, presented six crows with tubes filled with water. Inside the tubes, a worm or piece of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crow. In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged several rubber erasers that would sink, and some plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the erasers into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack. However, the birds handled awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow one to get a snack, the researchers said. Dropping objects into narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops; while it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obviously didn’t realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first. Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in a small amount of water at the bottom. 1.How did the crows get the snack in Sarah’s experiment? A.By breaking the tube. B.By dropping in erasers. C.By standing on the wood. D.By removing the wood. 2.What does the author mean by “the birds handled awkwardly” in paragraph 4? A.They were unable to tell different shapes. B.They dropped objects only into narrow tubes. C.They were not aware of the snack at first sight. D.They mostly avoided the easier way to get the snack. 3.What does the text mainly focus on? A.Stories of Aesop’s Fables. B.The development of crows. C.Crows’ intelligence. D.Human-animal communication. 4.What can we learn from the passage? A.Crows are almost as clever as first-graders in some respects. B.Crows understand water displacement completely. C.Chimps and children are much smarter than crows. D.The story of “The crow and the Pitcher” lacks evidence.
Candy comes in many flavors. Some taste like fruit. Some taste like flowers. Some are chewy, like taffy (太妃糖) and gum. Hard candies are, well. hard! So, they last a long time. But, in spoken English, there are some types of candy that you cannot eat. For example, you can’t eat eye candy. Eye candy is a person-man or woman-who is very good-looking. So, looking at this person is a treat for the eye, just like candy is a treat for the taste buds. Do you hear of candy coat? Of course it is not a coat made of candy. But you can say I don’t candy coat the truth. What does candy-coating something mean? Well, some pills are covered with a coat of thin, sweet candy. The coating makes swallowing the pill easier, and it may hide a bad taste. So, candy coating a difficult truth or situation means you don’t directly discuss its bad parts. After talking about candy you may want to eat some candies. However, some people dislike things that are very sweet, especially adults. But even if you do not like candy, you can still be called a kid in a candy store. This expression means a person is very happy to do something or to simply be somewhere. Imagine a child going from one candy display to the next, not knowing which candy to choose! Talking about children brings us to another expression: as easy as taking candy from a baby. Think about a small, helpless baby holding a piece of candy. Taking it would be very easy—mean, but easy. So, use this expression when you are talking about something that may be simple to do, but probably not right. 1.What kind of girl can be described as “eye candy”? A.Beautiful B.Optimistic C.Hardworking D.Warmhearted 2.What does the underlined word “swallowing” mean in English? A.Making. B.Taking. C.Selling. D.Testing. 3.Which of the following expressions means you are doing something with wrong intention? A.Hard candies. B.Candy coat. C.A kid in a candy store. D.As easy as taking candy from a baby. 4.What is the best title of the passage? A.Candy. Enjoy It or Avoid It B.Various Candies in English C.The Best Candy in the World D.Candies’ Different Flavors
Sonya took Rupert, a rescue dog, back home three years ago, and soon found it liked attacking strangers and other animals, which she believed was caused by pain. It took Sonya a year to develop a normal relationship with Rupert, during which she learned it was afraid of being left alone and also couldn’t walk properly. Finally, she decided to take it to see a vet (兽医). After examining Rupert, the vet said its leg was broken, and it needed an immediate operation. But when it had to go in for an operation on its leg, there was a problem—the vet Mike couldn’t get near the dog. Mike and Sonya were left scratching their heads until one of them came up with an idea. Sonya said Rupert slept on a mouse suit so she suggested that Mike put it on. At first, the dog barked wildly when Mike tried to operate on it in usual clothes. To make his patient feel at ease, Mike decided to dress up in the mouse clothes to see if it would be less worried. Amazingly, it worked. It stopped barking and immediately became good friends with Mike when he put on the suit. As a result, he was able to perform an operation on the leg safely and the result was quite satisfying. After the successful operation, Mike hugged the dog around the neck, which isn’t usually well-received by pets. Mike tried to be as respectful of its needs as possible and made time to give some attention.
