Princess quiz time! How did Snow White survive? How did Cinderella (《灰姑娘》) leave her evil stepmother? How did Sleeping Beauty finally wake up?

A kind-hearted person always comes to save the princess, like a prince or a godmother. Princesses cannot protect themselves, though they are very pretty and nice. They always need the help of others.

However, in fact, women can’t put their life in the hands of a prince-like man. They need to work and even fight for their own happiness. The traditional image of a princess is getting out of date.

Recently, Disney, a company famous for its princess movies, posted the “top 10 rules for being a modern princess”. You will not find any rules related to beauty or looks. The rules focus on loyalty, honesty and other moral values. The rules say princesses need to believe in themselves and try their best to get out of trouble, instead of waiting for a prince’s help.

It’s not the first time Disney princesses have caught up with society’s development. In 1950, when people’s hearts were broken by World War II, Disney created Cinderella. In 1990, Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast (《美女与野兽》) loved reading when education was a man’s special right in the past. Belle showed the improvement of women’s position in society. Now is Elsa from the film Frozen (《冰雪奇缘》), a symbol of modern princess.

“This is brilliant – ‘The top 10 rules of being a modern princess’ – (it’s) about time,” a group named Confidently Mom said on social media website Twitter. Princesses are still very beautiful, but inner character is the key to being a princess.

1.What does the story think modern women should be like?

A.They should turn to others for help.

B.They should depend on themselves for their own happiness.

C.They don’t need to care about their appearances.

D.They should depend on men to do most things.

2.Disney’s rules for being a modern princess focus on a girl’s _____.

A.looks B.education

C.position in society D.thought

3.The images were created to catch up with the society’s development except _____.

A.Belle B.Cinderella

C.Godmother D.Elsa

4.What does the group Confidently Mom think of the rules?

A.Fantastic B.Meaningless

C.Doubtful D.Social

China has entered the cinematic(电影制作的) space race. Wandering Earth, the country’s first blockbuster science fiction film, is on track to be one of the highest grossing (票房收入) films in China’s history.

The film has brought in more than 2bn yuan (£232m) in the six days since its release on February 5. So far, it is the highest-grossing film released over the holiday season, a peak time for the Chinese box office(票房收入).

Wandering Earth is based on the work of Liu Cixin, the author of the Three-Body Problem series and the first Chinese author to win a Hugo award.

“Wandering Earth fills the gap in Chinese science fiction movies. It means that China’s science fiction movies have officially set sail,” one fan of the film wrote on the review site Douban.

The film is seen by some as the dawn of Chinese sci-fi — a genre(类型;体裁) that has long been led by Hollywood. Several other Chinese-made sci-fi films are due to debut (首映) this year, including Shanghai Fortress, about an alien invasion, and Pathfinder, which follows a spaceship that has crashed on a deserted planet.

Frant Gwo, the director of Wandering Earth, said, “2019 could be remembered as year zero of Chinese science-fiction blockbusters. It is not just about one successful movie but about multiple films.”

Critics of the film have pointed out the plot holes(剧情漏洞) and cloying of sentimentality(刻意煽情) — something Wandering Earth shares with its Hollywood peers.

In response to plot criticisms about the necessity of ejecting (喷射) Earth from the solar system, Liu said: “Of course we don’t need to escape soon. That’s why it’s a movie instead of a real-life crisis.”

1.What’s the Chinese meaning of the underlined word?

A.非常成功的事物 B.非常成功的人

C.外星人 D.英雄人物

2.What is the fan’s attitude toward the film according to Paragraph 4?

A.Doubtful. B.Negative.

C.Positive D.Uncaring.

3.Which of the following does not belong to Chinese-made sci-fi film?

A.Shanghai Fortress B.Wandering Earth

C.Pathfinder D.Avatar

4.Which aspect do the critics think is a shortcoming of the film?

A.The theory. B.The ending.

C.The special effects. D.The plot holes.

It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sickthe agedand children who have lost their parentsbut also friendsworkmatesrelatives and neighbors whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.

Over 60 years agowhen a Cleveland man noticed that some peoplesuch as children who lost their parents and patients who lay in bedtoo often felt forgotten and neglectedhe developed in his mind the idea of showing them that they were remembered. Soon the idea spread to other cities all over the USA.

Sweetest Day is not based on any single group's religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a reminder(提醒人记忆之物)that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.     Encouraging pupils to keep noise to a minimum should be a valuable component of all children’s education, according to new research.

Dr. Helen Lees, from Stirling University’s school of education, says that “enforced silence” is seen as a punishment and often acts to suppress children’s natural ability. But she says that teaching children about the benefits of “enforced silence”deliberate stillness that gives them the opportunity to focus and reflect in a stress-free environmentcan have a significant effect on pupils’ concentration and behavior.

It is the latest in a string of researches to establish a link between the classroom environment and pupils’ academic ability.

A study almost a decade ago in London found that children’s exam results were cut by as much as a third if they were taught in noisy classrooms. Teaching unions have also called for a limit of 26℃ to be put on classroom temperatures because teachers and pupils struggle to work in hot conditions, and some educationalists claim that too much clutter on classroom walls can prevent children from concentrating.

Dr. Lees said, “When we take some research on school settings and put it all together, what we see is that education without silence does not make much sense. In areas of better learning outcomes, better self- confidence and well-being measures, enforced silence in a person’s life and an individual’s education is shown throughout the relevant research to be a benefit.”

Dozens of schools across Britain have already introduced periods of “reflective silence” into the timetable.

Kevin Hogston, head of Sheringdale Primary, south London, has just introduced a minute’s silence at the start of twice-weekly meetings in which children are taught breathing techniques and encouraged to reflect. The school plans to introduce it into classrooms every day.

1.According to Dr. Helen Lees, “enforced silence” __

A.is an effective way of punishment B.does not make much sense in class

C.can improve pupils’ confidence D.makes pupils more creative

2.The underlined word “suppress” in the second paragraph probably means “_________”.

A.prevent B.improve

C.apply D.reveal

3.What can be inferred from the research on school settings?

A.Students are more active if taught in noisy classrooms.

B.Silence makes a great difference to pupils.

C.Clutter on the walls can help students concentrate.

D.Most schools are not satisfactory in terms of classroom temperatures.

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A.Arranging classroom settings benefits studies

B.Achieving silence is beneficial for people

C.Using enforced silence is effective punishment

D.Keeping quiet in class improves academic performance

Just a year ago, the colors were bright under the waves. Now it’s gray — the Maldivian reef is dead. The coral is killed by the pressure of rising temperatures.

Coral reefs are areas underwater where small creatures live. The coral is hard material formed on the bottom of the sea by the skeletons of those creatures. But the world has lost about half its coral reefs in the last 30 years. Scientists are working to prevent their destruction. Due to global warming, over 90 percent of corals are expected to die by 2050. “To lose coral reefs is to fundamentally undermine the health of a very large proportion of the human race,” said Ruth Gates, director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.

Why are coral reefs important? Coral reefs support a fourth of all marine species, as well as half a billion people worldwide. They serve as barriers to protect coastlines from the storms. They provide billions of dollars from tourism, fishing and other trade. They are also used in medical research for cures for diseases. “Everyone should be concerned,” said biologist Ove Guldberg at Australia’s University of Queensland. “This is not just some distant dive destination. This is the basic structure of the ecosystem we depend on.”

The ocean is getting warmer. A rising temperature of just one to two degree Celsius can force coral to expel the algae (驱逐海藻) that live there. This leaves their white skeletons uncovered. It is a process called “bleaching”. Sixteen percent of the world’s corals died of bleaching in 1998. The problem has become much worse in recent years.

“We’ve lost 50 percent of the reefs, but that means we still have 50 percent left,” said Ruth Gates, who is working in Hawaii to breed corals that can better withstand increasing temperatures. She is also trying to “train” corals to survive rising temperatures. Gates says it is time to start “thinking outside the box”— find creative ways to help them.

1.The underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 2 means ___________.

A.weaken B.regain C.promote D.overlook

2.What’s the major concern of the scientists like Ove Guldberg?

A.People won’t find a dive destination in the future.

B.The effort to save corals will turn out to be fruitless.

C.The destruction of coral reefs will affect the earth ecosystem.

D.The bright sea has lost its charm because of those dead corals.

3.The fourth paragraph is mainly about ___________.

A.the harm of algae B.the process of “bleaching”

C.the importance of coral reefs D.the change of ocean temperature

4.Ruth Gates’ attitude towards the protection of corals is ___________.

A.proud B.cautious C.optimistic D.casual

Penguins (企鹅) are birds that “fly” underwater. By flapping (拍打) their wings the same way birds do in the air, penguins can move through the water well.

1.Most birds have hollow (中空的) bones that help make flying easier. But the penguin’s bones are heavy. This helps them stay underwater.

2.They feed on many different kinds of fish.

3.Some live in Antarctic, one of the coldest places on Earth. Others live on the Galapagos Islands, a very hot place. 4.People and penguins eat some of the same foods. The more fish people take out of the sea, the fewer there are for the penguins to eat. 5.

A.Penguins are very tough (坚强的) birds.

B.Penguins find it hard to adjust.

C.All penguins hunt for food underwater.

D.Penguins are different from other birds.

E.Ocean pollution is a real problem for penguins.

F.People, though, are the penguin’s biggest problem.

G.Also, penguins sometimes get caught up in fishing nets and die.

It is the year 3000. I come to a place where I can’t see any water, plants or animals but black clouds in the sky and sand everywhere. It’s very dry so I drink some water that I carry with me. A native sees what I do and asks “What is it?” I pour some water and tell him it’s called water. “Oh, I’m so lucky that I can see water!” the man shouts in an excited voice. “You have never seen water? But how can you live without water?” I ask.

“Harry, get up, it is 7 o’clock, or you will be late!” a voice comes to my ears. “Oh! What a strange dream I dreamed just now!”

In class, I always think of that dream. And I also think of the fresh air, clean water, blue sky, green plants and animals in our world nowadays. How beautiful our life is!

But in order to make more money, people have built more and more factories. These factories send out waste smoke and water with chemicals which are harmful to the environment. The pollution is becoming worse and worse, and as a result, some animals and plants die out. With the development of agriculture, farmers spray aerosol (喷雾) and fertilizer, which also pollute the water and air. In the street the cars and buses are sending out heavy smoke which pollutes the air badly. Even tourism is harmful to the environment. When some tourists travel somewhere, they throw the plastic bags and rubbish onto the ground.

These behaviors are polluting the environment and the environment will become the greatest problem of the world. We shouldn’t pollute the environment any more. Otherwise more and more animals and plants will disappear. And maybe my dream will come true in the future.

C.tourism D.man

According to some researchers, you should not praise children for everything that they do. It does not help them build self-confidence.

Most parents and teachers agree that praise can help increase children's self-confidence-the more, the better. However, according to some researchers, only proper praise is good for children. If adults praise everything children do, it makes children look for praise all the time, not trying to do their best. "Teachers should not say things like 'good job 'or 'nice work' whenever a child does anything. They should encourage them to continue to improve,” some researchers advise.

Another idea is that children with high self-confidence are happier, and do better at school. About this, Marshall Duke, a researcher in children, says, "High self-confidence brought in by too much praise does not make children happier, get more, or become able to do more. Finding a child's advantages and developing them can help build confidence more than too much praise can." Praise also loses its effect if it is given equally to all students.

"It's important to tell children the truth about what they've done. Honest feedback(反馈)is far better than empty praise," Duke adds. "People have got into the habit of not telling children when they’re wrong. That makes it hard for them to deal with difficulties when they grow up. That's just how the world is."

I hardly have any good memories of my summer holidays two years ago. All I can remember is that I was busy doing drugs with my friends for most of the time. I said to myself that I would give up drugs before I went back to schoolbut when school started I was still addicted to them.

I went back to school like the other students but I had become a very different person. Most students came back to school with smiles on their facesbut not me. I became a different person that didn't care about anything but drugs. It was like I was walking around in a different body.

I went from being an above average student to a really bad student. I started to do things that I never thought I would do before -like bullying(恐吓)studentsand fighting with people just because they looked at me in the wrong way. I rarely smiled or played sports like I used to. I was always moody and angry with my friends and teachers. I started to skip school(逃学)once or twice a week. No one seemed to careso I was soon absent nearly everyday. I started stealing money from my parents and I lied to other people just to get some money for drugs. When my parents found out that I stole their money and sold their jewellery, they got really angry. I started to hang out with my drug addict friends for days and nights without going back home. I even slept by the side of the road and woke up without caring what people would think about me.

Now I have changed a lot. Drugs are terrible. Stay away from them.

Hardly have I finished a few pages when I was great attracted by Helen Keller. Despite her disability, she didn’t abandon hope and achieve a lot. This was her determination and courage that made her huge success.

When I finished reading the book, Mother had a talk with me. “You can also accomplish which Helen Keller did.” Mother’s words ring in my ear whenever I see the book, inspired me to face challenges in life.

Some students find themselves constantly in trouble with attention at school.1.If you have trouble paying attention, sitting still, and are getting constantly called out by your teacher, you can still learn to follow the rules and channel your energy into becoming a better student.

2.If you have trouble paying attention and staying on task, changing your attitude can help a lot. Try to use your imagination to make the task cooler and more fun. It might sound stupid, but pretending your schoolwork is fun can actually make it fun.

Take notes. One great way to keep yourself focused on the class topics and the lesson is to take notes. Even if you'll be provided with a review, or you don't eventually need the information for the test, if you struggle to pay attention, focus on writing down the important things the teacher says.3.

Be prepared for class. You can't stay focused if you don't have all the necessary supplies ready, and you're in your seat on time. There's nothing worse for your classroom reputation than forgetting your math textbook, or having to ask for a pencil or a piece of paper that you forget to bring.

Get involved in the class discussions.4.Just raise your hand if you know the answer, and talk during discussions in class if they're going on.

5.Just like changing your attitude about enjoying your classes, making an active choice can be an important first step in actually getting better grades.

A.Motivate yourself to improve your grades.

B.Use your imagination and decide to like the topics.

C.Taking notes can also help you improve your writing skills.

D.If you're not active in class, make a change and try to answer questions.

E.There are so many factors to make you unfocused, and you aren't alone!

F.This will help you stay focused and you'll have something to refer to later.

G.Seeing the results of your hard work, you might become more confident at work.

Seasonal pumped hydropower storageSPHS),an already established yet infrequently used technology ,could be an affordable and sustainable solution(解决方法)to store energy and water annually, according to new IIASA research published in the journal Nature Communications. Compared with other mature storage solutions, such as natural gas, the study shows that there is considerable potential for SPHS to provide highly competitive energy storage costs.

Seasonal pumped hydropower storage means pumping water into a deep storage reservoir(水库), built parallel to a major river, during times of high water flow or low energy demand. When water is not enough or energy demand increasesstored water is then released from the reservoir to generate electricity.

The new study is the first to provide a global, high-resolution analysis of the potential and costs for SPHS technology. In their analysis, researchers assessed the theoretical global potential for storing energy and water seasonally with SPHS, focusing on the locations with the highest potential and lowest cost. They found that the technology would be particularly effective in the Himalayas, the Andes, Alpsand the Rocky Mountains, as well as mountainous regions in the Middle East, Brazil, Asia, and Russia, and many other locations around the world.

The study also addresses some of the potential environmental concerns related to hydropower. Because SPHS reservoirs are deep and constructed parallel to, rather than within the course of a river, the environmental and land use impacts can also be up to 10 to 50 times smaller than conventional hydropower plants.

Hunt, lead author of the study, says, “With the need for a change to a more sustainable world with lower CO2 emissions(排放),renewable energies and energy storage will play a major role in the near future. Given the vast untapped(未开发的)and cheap potential of SPHS, it will soon play an important role in storing energy and water on a yearly basis.”

1.What is the strength of SPHS based on the new IIASA research?

A.It’s costly. B.It’s out-dated.

C.It’s rarely used. D.It’s inexpensive.

2.What do researchers concentrate on when assessing the use of SPHS?

A.Environmental protection. B.High profits.

C.Suitable places. D.Water flow.

3.What do we know about the SPHS reservoirs in Paragraph 4?

A.They damage the river.

B.They are environmentally friendly.

C.They are similar to traditional hydropower plants.

D.They can be effective in many places globally.

4.What’s the future for SPHS according to Hunt?

A.Promising. B.Panicking.

C.Discouraging. D.Demanding.

People may set an alarm on the phone or clock that sounds like this: beep beep beep. That hard, unpleasant sound may be making it harder to shake off the sleepy feeling in the morning known as grogginess. So, is there a better way to wake up? A recent study says yes. The answer is music.

The study, carried out by researchers in Australia, involved 50 people. The researchers found that people who wake up to musical alarms reported feeling more awake and alert. Stuart McFarlane, a lead writer of the study stated, "We are very surprised by these findings as one might expect a harsh beeping sound to be more successful," at waking up a person.

Sleep inertia is another term for grogginess. It means a person has a heavy feeling when waking up, and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping. McFarlane said people need to better understand sleep inertia's harmful effects on human performance later in the day.

Not everyone will experience the full effect. But for those who do, "care should be taken" when performing duties that require a top performance within this period, he said. This includes "dangerous tasks like driving or riding our bikes" shortly after waking up. The same is true for people who work in dangerous situations shortly after they wake, including firefighters and pilots.

So, what makes musical alarms better for waking up? The researchers think the music may be more successful in reducing sleep inertia because it has several tones, compared to the single tone of a "beeping" alarm. McFarlane said that the changes over time between the music tones may help increase a person's attention when waking from sleep.

And is there a kind of music that is best to wake up to? There may be, McFarlane said. "We could suggest alarm sounds that are tune full and easy to hum or sing along with. The current sounds I have been using include 'Close to me' by the Cure and 'Borderline' by Madonna."

No matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters a lot.

1.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A.What is grogginess? B.Why are musical alarms better?

C.Which music is the best? D.How can we overcome grogginess?

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Sleep inertia is another cause for grogginess.

B.How long a person sleeps is of great importance.

C.The 'beeping' alarm is not effective mainly because of its noisy tone.

D.It is dangerous for everyone to drive or ride bicycles shortly after waking up.

3.The paragraph following this passage is likely to focus on        .

A.examples of good musical alarms

B.more findings of the application of music

C.explanations about why music is more helpful

D.suggestions on how to sleep well and feel fresh each morning

4.In which section of a magazine may you find the passage?
