It’s 2020. I mean, it’s high time we should think over saving seriously. Despite your own ways to deal with money, 1.

Take the priority principle

Instead of saving here and there, take the priority principle to saving money. Basically you need to rank your expenses, 2.

3.

To make dealing with money more targeted for you, choose a personal finance book. I recommend Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You to Be Rich($14). It’s a good book for those in their 20s because it picks out practical personal finance advice in a fun and easy read.

Let technology aid you

Use web tools to make it easier to manage your money. There are free site that lets you to view all of your accounts in one place and provides tools that help determine where it would be easiest to cut spending. 4.There are even apps that will save you money on gas and let you text for free.

Automating(自动的)

5.It’s generally better than relying on your random decision. If you’re already automating, try to increase the amount by five percent every year.

A.then make a plan to save the biggest expenses first

B.Consider downloading apps that will help you save

C.here are still several saving tips that help you grow your money

D.Learn financial management

E.so we can choose the best from them

F.You need to learn good money habits as soon as you have money of your own through work

G.The best way to make sure you’re saving enough is to automatically put a part of your money into your savings and retirement accounts every month

Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.

In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating  role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.

In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.

In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.

Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with all the material knocking at the door of imagination.

Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve you. Then you can say, “I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors’ tragedies and declare victory, and know that they are cheering me on.”

1.To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should _______.

A.stay away from stars B.forget daily fear and pain

C.choose the right example D.ask others for decisions

2.According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are _______.

A.desperate to influence others with their knowledge B.eager to discover what their ancestors did

C.willing to accept others’ ideas D.ready to turn their original ideas into reality

3.The trouble a creator faces is _______.

A.how to use imagination creatively B.the lack of strong motivation

C.how to search for more materials D.the absence of practical ideas

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A.To compare imitation with creation. B.To highlight the importance of creativity.

C.To criticize the characters of role models. D.To explain the meaning of success.

The 5-year-old mountain lion, P-45, has managed to cross busy roads safely, has avoided rat poison and has successfully claimed his territory (领地) under all challenges that have hindered other members of the mountain lion population in the Santa Monica Mountain. His deadly mistake, however, was doing what mountain lions naturally do so well: killing and eating.

Over the weekend, P-45 apparently broke into two farms, killing 10 alpacas(羊驼) at one property and a goat and an alpaca at the other. P-45 was identified as the criminal by a tracking device he wears.

It’s illegal to hunt mountain lions in California thanks to 1990’s Proposition 117, but the rule included an exception for residents whose livestock is killed by a lion. And on Nov. 28, the owner of the 10 dead alpacas requested and received a special “depredation permit” (掠夺许可)to hire a hunter to kill P-45. The 10-day permit allows the hunter to cover a 10-mile range around the farm in search of the lion. Hunters often attract the lion with a deer.

The farmer owner is within her legal rights to have the lion killed. But killing P-45 is not the answer, especially when he is one of the few adult male mountain lions in an isolated population that is at risk of extinction.

Of course, people should be allowed to protect themselves and their children if a mountain lion attacks. But the law that allows the issuance of the depredation permit essentially gives the livestock owner the right to decide whether the lion should live or die. There is no evaluation by wildlife official as to whether the lion poses a further threat to humans or animals.

Los Angeles residents are lucky to live near wild, open spaces large enough to sustain mountain lions. Surely there is a better way to manage the conflicts that arise when humans and their domestic animals move into areas that have long served as habitat for wildlife.

1.What does the underlined word “hindered” refer to in the first paragraph?

A.blocked. B.killed.

C.protected. D.surrounded.

2.What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A.Lions feed only on deer.

B.P-45 will be killed on Nov. 28.

C.P-45 will be found10 miles around the farm in 10 days.

D.Lions in California can not be hunted at will.

3.What will probably be the result if P-45 is killed?

A.Residents can live with lions peacefully.

B.The mountain lion’s situation will probably be worsened.

C.The conflict between man and lions can be solved.

D.Lions will not be a further threat to humans or animals.

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards the “depredation permit”?

A.Objective. B.Supportive.

C.Opposed. D.Uninterested.

I have had so many fantastic holidays, but my favorite memory is that of a few summer weeks spent in Italy when I was about 13. My mom had to go to a clinic there for treatment, and we all went together as a family and took the opportunity to have a beautiful vacation as well. It was my first time to be abroad and it was a vacation that broadened my perspectives, taught me a lot, and helped shape a bit of who I am today.

Although we did visit many famous places in northern Italy, we stayed mostly in a little town where some friends of my parents lived. Nothing helped me understand Italian culture better than my stay in this magical town that many haven’t even heard of.

Thanks to the holiday spent in Italy, I, quite a shallow girl, also discovered my passion for music, which stayed alive in me to this day and will probably  stay forever. My parents’ friends had a son, Ricardo, who was a pianist. Dad had repeatedly but uselessly tried to make me study an instrument and stick to it. However, when I heard Ricardo play, I instantly lost my heart to music and felt a great desire to learn it. Ricardo taught me the first song I ever played on the piano, a silly, playful little time tune that I still know by heart.

We took a short trip to the Italian Alps at some points. I had never seen such majestic beauty before! The snow-capped peaks, the rocks, the fresh, harsh air -  what an experience! And what I remember impressed me the most was the fact that, although  this was a popular  touristic area, the region was incredibly  clean, still “natural”, with places that seemed to never have been touched by humans. Then, the shallow teen learned what a real treasure nature is and how important it is to protect it.

1.What was the main reason for the author and her family to go to Italy?

A.To cure her mother of her illness.

B.To experience a wonderful vocation.

C.To broaden and shape the author’s view.

D.To keep her mother company.

2.What was the main factor contributing to the author’s enthusiasm for music?

A.Her father’s guidance. B.Ricardo’s performance.

C.Her friendship with Ricardo. D.The first song she played on the piano.

3.What did the author learn after the trip to Alps?

A.Persistence in her passion for music.

B.Enjoyment of the beauty of nature.

C.Getting rid of her shallowness.

D.Valuing and preserving the environment.

4.What would be the best title of the text?

A.My Favorite Holiday Memory.

B.A Trip Shaping My Personality.

C.Lessons from a Trip to Italy.

D.My Love for Music and Nature.

Most Visited European Destinations for Chinese Tourists

Bicester Village

According to a 2019 Visit Britain report, over 275,000 Chinese tourists visit the UK every year. And where do they go? It claimed that “they are mostly interested in symbolic elements: the Royal Family, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey”.

Then there’s the shopping. Bicester Village, a vast retail estate on the outskirts of the Oxfordshire town, is the second most visited UK attraction for Chinese tourists after Buckingham Palace, and three in four Chinese visitors head there.

King’s College, Cambridge

A famous tree, for Chinese people at least, can be found in King’s College, Cambridge. The willow(柳树), regarded to be a holy thing to lost youth, is mentioned in a much-loved poem by Xu Zhimo, who spent a year studying at King’s College - Taking Leave of Cambridge Again.

Bonn

The former West German capital is another popular port of call. Chinese love classical music, particularly Beethoven, making his birthplace an obvious highlight of any trip to Europe. The city’s tourist board offers maps in three foreign languages: English, Chinese and Japanese.

Verona

Both British and Chinese travelers flock to Venice, Rome and Florence, but Verona typically appears higher  on the wish lists of China’s tourists. That’s because of the country’s adoration of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The play is popular on UK shores, of course, but the love is doubled in China as it was among the first of the Shakespeare’s works to be translated into Chinese Mandarin. Its plot bears a striking resemblance(相似之处) to a famous Chinese folk tale, The Butterfly Lovers. Expect to see queues at the popular House of Juliet on Via Cappello (a statue of the character stands beneath her balcony).

1.Which is most visited destination for Chinese tourists?

A.Bicester Village. B.Buckingham Palace.

C.King’s College. D.Cambridge.

2.Which place are the Chinese music fans likely to go?

A.Bicester Village. B.King’s College, Cambridge.

C.Bonn. D.Verona.

3.Which are adored by Chinese tourists who love literature?

A.Bicester Village and Bonn. B.Bicester Village and King’s College, Cambridge.

C.Verona and Bonn. D.King’s College, Cambridge and Verona.

I often wanted to look like as the slim girls on TV even though I knew it was impossible. To lose weight, I tried no-fat, low-fat, only bananas — I almost went madly.

Then I read an article what said instead of asking “Am I fat?” I should be asking “Am I fit?” I didn’t know a letter could make such difference! Once I started thinking about fit rather than weight, things began to change. Rather than cutting out the foods I enjoyed, I adds healthy foods to my meals. I could still have a burger now and then, but I would add a salad or an apple.

Finally, I stopped compare myself with actresses and models. Instead, I made a list of the thing I liked about myself. By being positive about me and my body, I became both happier or healthier.

How to Help a Friend with Depression

If you have a friend who is suffering from depression, you may be unsure about what you should do to help. There are several ways that you can help a friend with depression.

1.

As soon as you suspect that your friend is suffering from depression, you should encourage him or her to see a doctor. Your friend may be denying that there is a problem or maybe even embarrassed to admit that there is a problem. The extra encouragement of a friend may be all that your friend needs to seek help.

Supporting your friend

Depression can make people feel isolated and like no one cares. Even if you have shown your concern by doing things to help your friend, he or she may need to hear you say that you are there for them in order to believe it. Let your friend know that you are available. 2.

Depression can also make a person feel worthless, but you can use encouraging words to support your friend until your friend remembers his or her worth again. 3.Avoid saying unnecessary things like, “It’s all in your head.” or “Snap out of it!”

Moving beyond depression with your friend

As your friend begins to feel better, keep your friend moving beyond depression by planning some fun outings. 4. And make plans to do those things so that your friend will always have something to look forward to. 5.Recent studies have shown it helps to ease the symptoms of depression and make people who are depressed feel more connected to others. You probably know what makes your friend laugh better than anyone else does, so make sure that you use that knowledge to laugh with them on a regular basis.

A.Those who laugh last laugh best.

B.Choose activities that you both enjoy.

C.Encouraging your friend to talk to you.

D.Helping your friend get treatment for depression.

E.Laughter is known as the best medicine for a reason.

F.Therefore, they can contact you right away if they need you.

G.You could say, “You are such a gifted artist. I really admire your talent.”

During the winter in the Southern Hemisphere, a blue point of light shines overhead. The brilliant point on the sky, which looks like a bright star, is actually two stars in close orbit — accompanied by the closest known black hole to Earth.

The newly discovered black hole is about 1,011 light-years from our solar system in the star system HR 6819. Published today in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the object is locked in an orbit with two visible stars. It is estimated about four times the mass of the sun and about 2,500 light-years closer than the next black hole. “It seems like it’s been hiding in plain sight,” says astronomer Kareem El-Badry, a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in binary star (双子星) systems but wasn’t involved with the study. “HR 6819 is such a bright star (system) that people have been studying it since the 80s, but it seems like it’s had some surprises.”

“If you find one that is very close to you, and you assume you’re not special, then they must be out there everywhere,” says lead study author Thomas Rivinius, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile. Researchers have long estimated that the Milky Way is home to hundreds of millions of black holes, objects whose gravitational fields (引力场) are so strong, not even light can escape. But finding these dark objects has proven extremely difficult. Dozens of black holes in the galaxy have been spotted “feeding” on nearby clouds of gas — a process that sends out x-rays as the material moves around the edges of the black hole. But the majority of black holes in our galaxy cannot be seen, so the only way to find them is by observing their gravitational effects on surrounding objects.

In follow-up work, researchers led by study co-author Petr Hadrava aim to study the light given off by HR 6819 and understand the precise identity of the two close stars.

1.What do we know about the newly discovered black hole?

A.It moves with two other stars.

B.It came into being in the 1980s.

C.It weighs much more than earth.

D.It can be seen easily during the winter.

2.What can we infer from Thomas Rivinius’s words in paragraph 3?

A.Most black holes are common.

B.More black holes can be found.

C.Black holes are difficult to learn.

D.Black holes exist in star systems.

3.What will scientists probably do next?

A.Learn more about the two close stars.

B.Analyze the light around the black hole.

C.Observe the influence of black holes on stars.

D.Study the black holes in the system of HR 6819.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.A New Star System in Universe

B.Two Special Stars in the Same Orbit

C.The Closest Black Hole to the Earth

D.The Biggest Black Hole in the Milky Way

Cryonics is the practice of cooling dead organic tissue. This is used on humans or animals that have recently died. The hope is to bring them back to life in the near future. By law, it can only be performed on humans after they are legally dead. Many scientists and doctors think cryonics is totally morally unacceptable. However, there are also many who support cryonics.

Supporters of cryonics hope that future technology will improve. Molecular technology is especially hoped to reverse (逆转) the early stages of clinical death. It is hoped that this will enable the repair of tissue on a very tiny level. It could also allow damaged tissues and organs to regenerate. They also assume that disease and aging will one day be reversible.

These supporters want to store the memory and identity from the brain of people who have recently died. Cryonics attempts to do this by using liquid that preserves the brain. If this is done before cooling, it will prevent injury. This cooling liquid saves the fine cell structures of the brain where memory and identity exist.

Critics of cryonics think this process is a waste of time and money. They base their opinions on the current level of science. It is true that cells, tissues, blood vessels, and some small animal organs can be reversibly preserved. Some frogs can even survive for a few months in a partially frozen state if they are kept a few degrees above freezing. But this is not true cryopreservation. There is no proof that the identity and memory of a person can be restored after death has occurred.

Critics also think that if it were possible to bring dead people back to life, it would cause many social problems. Critics worry it would cause a huge overpopulation problem. Many also think trying to reverse death is immoral because it is against the will of their God.

1.What can we know about cryonics from paragraph 1?

A.Cryonics is used before people's death.

B.All scientists aren't in favor of the use of cryonics.

C.Laws forbid the use of cryonics on legally dead people.

D.Cryonics tries to cool dead organic tissue by using liquid.

2.What does the underlined word ''regenerate'' in paragraph 2 mean?

A.copy. B.return.

C.freeze. D.regrow.

3.Why do critics oppose the use of cryonics?

A.It will make people's memory lost.

B.Injury will occur during the process.

C.There is scientific uncertainty about it.

D.It goes along with their religious belief.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.The use of cryonics has a bright future.

B.Cryonics is still a controversial practice.

C.The practice of cryonics is limited by law.

D.There is an advance in medical technology.

Say the phrase “female environmental pioneers,” and among the names you will hear are Rachel Carson, who wrote pesticides; chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall; and 17-year-old climate-change activist Greta Thunberg. To mark Women’s History Month, Kidspost is sharing the story of an environmental pioneer who is not that famous but equally remarkable.

At age 3, Sylvia Earle found her lifelong passion while playing on a beach. A wave suddenly came up and knocked her over.

“My mother ... saw the big smile on my face and let me run back in,” Earle told a TV interviewer years later. “And I’ve been running back in ever since.”

Earle is now 84 years old and has spent a lifetime exploring the world’s oceans and working to protect them from pollution, overfishing and other threats.

She is a pioneer in using scuba gear. Scuba gear lets divers take breath underwater. She holds the world record for the deepest untethered walk on the ocean floor at 1,250 feet. This means she was not tied to anything when she was walking underwater. During this exploration, she planted a U.S. flag.

In 1998, Time magazine gave Earle its first Heroes for the Planet award. She was the first female chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It is the U.S. ocean and atmosphere group. She was also elected to the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

Earle has spent her life teaching people about the ocean. She notes how much it affects the weather, and what we eat and drink. She has something to say to those who don’t understand why the ocean matters. “They should know that with every breath they take, every drop of water they drink, the ocean is touching them,” Earle says. “You should treat the ocean as if your life depends on it because it does.”

1.What does Earle’s lifelong passion refer to?

A.Teaching people how to dive. B.Writing articles for magazines.

C.Exploring and protecting oceans. D.Providing equipment for divers.

2.What do we know about Earle from the text?

A.Earle is a world record holder.

B.Earle’s mother is in support of her work.

C.Earle is a remarkable British ocean explorer.

D.Earle is the only female chief scientist at NOAA.

3.Which of the following words can best describe Earle?

A.brave and conservative. B.devoted and courageous.

C.determined and rigid. D.ambitious and modest.

4.Which of the following statement will Earle agree with according to the text?

A.People should stop overfishing and eating seafood.

B.The ocean plays a significant role in human’s life.

C.The weather has a far-reaching effect on the ocean.

D.The exploration of the ocean can be done without limit.

Dear Leo,

Know that you are in low spirits for the quarrels with your parentsI would like to help you, but I can totally understand your feelings.

To start with it, you should know what this kind of communication problem worries nearly all the teenagers. Therefore, you don’t have to blame yourself not having a good relationship with your parents.

Actually, it isn't easy for them to talk about myself with my parents either, so my solve is to write down my thoughts in a letter to them. We need to tell them what we want and learn to negotiate. For example, I once get my parents to let me hang out with my friends on weekends unless I got better scores.

What’s more, trust the love of your parents for you and have some faith in them.

They will absolute listen to you and understand you in the end.

I’m looking forward to your good news.

Yours,

Li Hua

Fearmongering (散布恐慌) against China more dangerous to global economy than coronavirus.

After weeks of attempting to make chaos and spread fear about the outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic in China, some overseas media outlets and individuals have shifted focus to another battlefield — the Chinese economy. They paint a rather dark picture not just for the Chinese economy but for the global economy.

1.People cannot help but panic about the global economy, which is already facing serious challenges like trade wars. It is easy to point fingers at China for “causing” such a mess for the world.

Anyway, these media outlets are right about a couple of things. 2. After all, consumers across the country are trapped in their homes and businesses and factories have been shut for a good part of this year. Second, we have to be fully aware of these challenges and risks in order to address the problem. The first step to solve a problem is to recognize there is one.

3. If not, why would they invest hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy if they weren’t aware of the problem? Why would they roll out a great number of measures to support businesses?4.

Regardless of how severe the impact will be, the epidemic does not change the fundamentals of the Chinese economy.5. There will be no reason that the vast Chinese consumer market will abruptly disappear or the world will suddenly no longer need products from the massive Chinese manufacturing sector, not to mention the country’s huge investment projects. So it can be safe to say that fearmongering against China is more dangerous to global economy than coronavirus.

A.With the effective measures taken by the whole country, the epidemic will be definitely under control.

B.Certainly, that paints a completely different picture we have seen from abroad.

C.First, the epidemic will make the Chinese economy suffer a little.

D.Still, there are many indicators to look for in assessing the potential damage on the Chinese and global economies.

E.Their articles are filled with scary headlines and exaggerated (夸大的) facts.

F.Why would they take extraordinary risks in encouraging factories to restart production?

G.Actually, Chinese officials have been very clear about the potential impact of the epidemic on the economy.

For an old person, his brain may perform not so well as before. But a new study suggests that some parts of brain may already decline in young adulthood.

The study, which followed more than 2,000 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60, found that certain mental functions — including measures of abstract reasoning, mental speed and puzzle-solving — started to dull as early as age 27. Meanwhile, the decline of memory generally became apparent around age 37.

On the other hand, indicators of a person’s accumulated knowledge — like performance on tests of vocabulary and general knowledge — kept improving with age, according to findings published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging.

The results do not mean that young adults need to start worrying about their memories. Most people's minds function at a high level even in their later years, according to researcher Timothy Salthouse. “According to these patterns, some kinds of flexibility in the brain decline relatively early in adulthood, but throughout adulthood the knowledge pool in one’s command and the effective combination with one’s capabilities may be on the increase without the attack of diseases.” Salthouse said in a news conference.

The study included healthy, educated adults who took standard tests of memory, reasoning and perception at first and at some point over the next seven years.

The tests are designed to detect subtle (细微的) changes in mental function, and involve solving puzzles, recalling words and details from stories, and identifying patterns in collections of letters and symbols.

In general, Salthouse and his colleagues found that certain aspects of cognition (认知能力) generally started to decline in the late 20s to 30s.The findings explain normal age-related changes in mental function, which could aid in understanding the process of dementia (痴呆), according to the researchers. “By following individuals over time,” Salthouse said, “we gain insight in cognition changes, and may possibly discover ways to slow the rate of decline.”

The researchers are currently analyzing the study participants’ health and lifestyle to see which factors might influence age-related cognitive changes.

1.According to the text, what is the common view of mental function?

A.It varies from person to person.

B.It weakens in one’s later years.

C.It gradually expands with age.

D.It indicates one’s health condition.

2.What does Timothy Salthouse say about people’s minds in most cases?

A.They tend to decline in people’s later years.

B.Their flexibility determines one’s abilities.

C.They function quite well even in old age.

D.Their functioning is still a puzzle to be solved.

3.Although people’s minds may function less flexibly as they age, what is their strength?

A.They may be better at solving puzzles.

B.They can memorize things with more ease.

C.They may have greater facility in abstract reasoning.

D.They can put what they have learned into more effective use.

4.According to Salthouse, how may their study help us?

A.It will find ways to stop mental functions dulling fast.

B.It will find ways to improve our memories.

C.It will help us understand the complex process of mental functioning.

D.It will help us understand the relation between physical and mental health.

As the school year barely starts in Denver, French teacher Melanie is filled with worry that her students are always absent-minded. Yet, the problem isn’t messaging, enjoying video games or delivering notes. Surprisingly, the problem is about the ongoing heat wave in Denver.

“Today was a little bit hot, so I noticed kids were very sleepy and they were having to get up to drink water quite often.” said Melanie, who works at Denver’s East High School. “If you lose too much water, and you have to keep going to the water fountain, that can take away from their classroom experience.” While nodding off in class on a warm day may seem acceptable for the average teen, Melanie’s observation carries a bigger consequence than dry lips.

“There have been quite a few media reports about teachers noticing that students weren’t able to focus on hotter days,” said R Jisung Park, a researcher, “Does a hotter climate during the school year actually affect the rate of learning?” The drops in academic achievement couldn’t be explained by hotter weekends or hotter summers, but the trend was connected to higher temperatures on school days alone.

The connection between lost learning and a greater number of hot days is one more example of how climate change is already affecting our lives — and it’s an alarm bell for what we stand to lose in the future. Humans still have time to lessen the worst consequences of continued global warming. Without the unlikely important changes in the next 10 years, the globe will be trapped in an unavoidable era of heat waves that were unprecedented (前所未有的) for human beings.

1.What may cause students absent-minded according to the text?

A.Video games. B.Text messages.

C.Heat waves. D.Classroom notes.

2.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A.Kids often go to the water fountain for lack of water.

B.Extreme heat may lower a kid’s ability to learn.

C.Nodding off in class is a sign of respecting teachers.

D.Kids are more interested in drinking water than sleeping.

3.How does the author feel about dealing with the future global warming?

A.Optimistic. B.Uncertain. C.Worried. D.Indifferent.

4.What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The way that global warming continues.

B.The reasons why kids are absent-minded in class.

C.The hotter it grows, the more focused kids become.

D.The hotter it grows, the harder it will be for kids to learn.

Upon first look, the world of business is no place for young women. And many people have told my cofounders and me that in many circumstances. Pessimistic though people are about women’s chances in conducting business, three of us female college students, without any experiences, started our business with a greatly aggressive goal: to set up a seaweed farm in North Carolina and grow as much seaweed as possible to help cut down carbon emissions (排放) and pollution filled with nutrition from agricultural activities.

In the beginning, our ideas were either ignored or mocked by the researchers from whom we sought help and advice. But we carried on with our research–if others wouldn’t provide us with answers, we weren’t afraid to try to work them out by ourselves. We experiment on species which could grow in warmer waters, and we had identified potential markets into which we planned to sell the product. We've spent the last two years setting up the first seaweed farm in NC, applying for a patent (专利) and competing with five final teams in front of the United Nations for 2 million.

Despite all of our efforts, many industry experts remained unwilling to take us seriously. But as often happens in business, the same characteristics we were ignored for were, in reality, our biggest competitive advantage. Our age gave us the strength to learn from failure, and our background as environmental scientists, rather than businesswomen, helped us find new marketing opportunities. For every 10 farmers who claimed nobody would ever want to feed their cows seaweed, we found one who was interested. For every 15 cosmetics producers who refused to answer our cold calls, we stuck to the one with an interesting idea for a seaweed lotion.

Over the course of our early business development efforts, we have had access to a wealth of resources, programs, and individuals who work constantly to help us succeed. By staying focused on bringing our ideas to light, our team has demonstrated that entrepreneurship (创业) is exactly the right place for the hopeful.

1.What was the major cause for their difficulty in starting business?

A.They were women. B.They were young.

C.They lacked experience. D.They suffered prejudice.

2.What did they do to make their business successful?

A.They expanded their seaweed farms.

B.They experimented on seaweed species.

C.They got their product officially recognized.

D.They consulted the United Nations.

3.What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.How they got others interested in seaweed.

B.How they succeeded from their so-called weaknesses.

C.How they made themselves more competitive.

D.How they approached potential customers.

4.Which of the following can best describe the three women?

A.Innocent and simple-minded. B.Ambitious and self-centered.

C.Adventurous and persistent. D.Courageous and stubborn.
