Everyone wants actually the same thing in life and that is to exist and flourish (辉煌) .Living a long and fruitful life is a difficult thing to do when a person can't coexist with other people in harmony. Living in harmony not only helps others but it helps the person living the harmonious life.1.

Avoid controversial topics with people. There are certain topics like religion and politics that can make another person embarrassed immediately. 2. This is especially important if you are very communicative.

Focus on the common things you have with other people rather than the differences3.But too many times a person can focus on what other people do not like or believe, and this can give them a negative (负面)opinion of others without even tiying to find some common ground on which they do agree.

4. Do not drift off or try to think of what you are going to say in response. You will be surprised how much people appreciate someone who is really listening without judging or arguing.

5. Let them understand that there are certain conversation topics and actions that you do not tolerate. It is up to you to set them and make people know and follow them. However, do not be argumentative about setting them.

Some people just cannot get along no  matter what measure you take to make a relationship work. So just stay out of these people's way and let them live their own lives apart from you.

A.Then, how do you live happily with others?

B.Listen to other people when they talk to you.

C.Establish proper boundaries with people in your life.

D.Making boundaries is not selfish, so voice your limits.

E.Decide how much you are willing to listen to other people.

F.Most people can find at least a few topics on which they agree.

G.It is best to talk about movies or anything that does not lead to a conflict.

A team of well-known developers have built a security tool, Scanguard™, which they believe will be the last piece of software consumers will ever need.

Product Manager, David, from ScanGuard, explains, "The software can increase the security immediately by distinguishing any hidden dangers or online tracking cookies. Also, it discovers and removes unnecessary files and cached memory—the files that can make your PC run slow. To have perfect performance and keep your computer secure, schedule the scan to run every 7 days. It roughly takes 10 minutes to fully analyze your system."

"People already love the system. Our plan is to give as many free scan licenses away so that it gains widespread use until we think that's enough for us to start charging. If you own a Windows Computer then you are allowed to have a free security scan. We advise users not to hesitate and try it cautiously and bravely before it's too late. We feel good knowing that we're helping make things faster and more secure for our customers,'' he continues.

The Scanguard™ free plan will, offer you a version of the software which will monitor your PC in full for threats (威胁),unwanted software or potentially dangerous tracking cookies. If the software finds out threats you can remove them from your system by hand now or pay for it to have the software do the automatic job about them.

Once you have downloaded the software you can also have free licenses for all of your devices, including your,Office & Home PC, Smartphone & even Tablet. It's so convenient! It’s no surprise that thousands of computer owners are taking advantage of this approved security system to keep themselves and their devices safe.

Bees and butterflies are active during the daytime. They get a lot of attention for their roles as pollinators(传粉者).But moths(蛾)aren't given the prominence they deserve.

Actually, moths are seen much less often, because they're active at night. Moth bodies often seem furry. Pollen—a yellow powder in the center of most flowers, from one flower sticks to their bodies and falls off when they move to other flowers. Scientists studied insects around nine ponds on farmlands in the United Kingdom. They visited these ponds once a month from March to October.

They studied three groups of insects: moths, bees that normally work together, like honey bees, and flying insects which work alone, such as butterflies. At the ponds, the scientists caught these flying insects and died to collect pollen from their bodies. In all, the scientists checked 838 moths, 632 other insects which work alone, and 1,548 honey bees.

By studying the pollen they collected, the scientists were able to see which plants the insects had visited. The moths had pollen from 47 different kinds of plants, including seven plants that bees don't normally visit. The honey bees had pollen from 46 different kinds of plants. The other insects that work alone had visited 45 different kinds of plants. Richard Walton, who led the study, says that bees usually choose the plants with the most nectar(花蜜)and most pollen. However, moths pollinate many different plants, filling in the gaps left by the daytime pollinators.

Not only do moths pollinate plants, they also provide important food for birds and bats.

But, like many other insects, moth numbers have dropped greatly in the last 50 years, mainly because of pesticides and the loss of natural lands. Just like bees and butterflies, moths are worth protecting. "Moths are by no means less important," says Dr. Walton.

A.They are less choosy. B.They eat less in the daytime.

C.They are more diverse. D.They carry more pollen.

4.What is the best title for the text?

The powwow was just fantastic! I could never have imagined how colorful and impressive this morning would be. The dances find the clothes, which were decorated with eagle feathers, attracted me.

I had heard about the powwow dancing in our culture class at Rice University, so I wanted very much to see what the Native Americans would look like in their traditional clothes.

The opening dance was scheduled to start at 730 a. m. Since I didn't want to miss any dances, I arrived there on timehowever, the dancing began an hour late. How could I have forgotten that Native Americans have a different feeling for time, which I had learned in our class? I had intended to go back for my term survey paper as soon as the great one-and-a-half hour event was over!

First, they started to play music with their drums it was accompanied by their low voices. “Hamma hamma…”. The music was exactly the same as I had heard in the movies.

Then, the Native Americans gradually changed their clothes they wore their own extremely amazing clothes for the dances, with their hairstyles special and faces multicolored(多颜色的).

Finally, the competitions were started the participants danced in different groups. They swung their arms and moved their feet in special steps, always to the beat of the music.

After one hour and a half of enthusiastically enjoying them, I took a walk along the food stands to eat some special Native American fried bread and other snacks. And I left that wonderful place for my hotel, having stayed two hours longer than I had first planned to stay.

I will never forget this wonderful morning that gave me a little view into the culture of Native Americans.

A.A university student.

B.An expert for the powwow.

Choosing the right college for you is not so easy. You should have a general idea of what you want and don’t want. The idea can guide you to find what fits your needs best.1.

Think about what major you want to study in college. If you know that, just look at colleges that have your major. 2.So think carefully about your major and interests before choosing one.

Where the college is located matters. Anyone who tells you the location isn’t important is lying.3.If you look forward to working in the publishing industry, New York may be your best bet. If your parents want you to stay close to home, please don’t consider anywhere that requires a plane ticket to get to.

Think about how much you can afford. Are your parents paying for your education? If so, how much are they willing to spend? Do you have to contribute anything? Financial aid and scholarship exist, but don’t count on anything. 4.These are all things to consider before you fall in love with a college.

Make sure you’re going to spend time with the right people. The cool thing about college is that each different one attracts different kinds of people. For the first thing in your life, you get to choose where you get to spend your time and who you get to spend it with.5.Make sure that the people you’re with for four years are your kind of people.

A.College is about learning what you love.

B.You’d better choose a major that is popular.

C.Go to the college with some people you like.

D.Are you willing to go into major debt over a school?

E.Remember, above all, it’s the people that make the place.

F.If you don’t like cold weather, stay away from northern schools.

G.These guidelines will help figure out what college you want to go to.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

Are your eyes irritated, dry, watery, blurry, seeing double or sensitive to light, and do your back and neck ache? If so, you are likely one of many people today who suffer from digital eyestrain, also called computer-vision syndrome.

Eyestrain is often related to the amount of exposure to screens, the distance from eyes to screens and the use of multiple screens simultaneously. However, studies have also shown that the blue light produced by digital devices today reaches further into the eyes than other kinds of light. This light actually assists attention during the day but can result in interrupted sleep patterns at night.

Scientists have also said that eyestrain is not a necessary evil, even in a modern world that revolves around technology. Changing some simple details about your relative position to screens, such as staying about 60 centimeters away, will help. Also, avoid overhead and other direct sources of light, and use shaded lamps and window blinds while looking at digital devices instead.

Beyond the way that relates to digital screens, there are also ways to change how you view screens that are helpful in combating eyestrain. To begin with, your computer screen should be high-resolution(高清的), at least 50 centimeters wide diagonally and may require a screen filter to decrease reflections. Also, be aware that “computer glasses”, which cut down glare and blue light, are available and those contact lenses can increase the risk of eyestrain.

Besides, to reduce your risk for computer-vision syndrome and neck, back and shoulder pain, take frequent breaks during your computer workday. Many workers take only two 15-minute breaks from their computer throughout their day. According to a recent study, discomfort and eyestrain are significantly reduced when computer workers take four additional five-minute “mini-breaks” throughout their workday. And these additional breaks don’t reduce the workers’ productivity.

Finally, many of us fall into bad habits while using digital screens that only worsen the effects of eyestrain. While viewing digital screens, many people blink one third less often than they usually do. Place a reminder on your computer to “blink” so that your eyes don’t dry out. Also, rest your eyes’ focusing muscles by using the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

1.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. The dangers of eyestrain. B. The causes of eyestrain.

C. The symptoms of eyestrain. D. The effects of eyestrain.

2.Which of the following ways might not be helpful in relieving eyestrain?

A. Employing blue light. B. Breaking bad habits.

C. Adjusting your position. D. Changing your hardware.

3.It can be inferred from the passage that_______ .

A. overhead lights make the eyes less tired

B. taking frequent breaks reduces eyestrain

C. people tend to blink more often at a computer

D. technology and eyestrain unavoidably go hand in hand

4.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

A.  B.

C.  D.

She arranged for a flight on a small  plane to be held for mere-routed(改道)me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.

Never have I experienced such a special time. It is three months since I begin to study at home. I’ve become accustomed to have classes online. Between classes, I can discuss which I don’t understand in class with my classmates. I can also turn my teachers for help at any time. I take exercise every day at home to stay health. My parents and I usually watch news over dinner to get the latest informations on the disease. We feel sorry for the people who are affected by them both at home or abroad. Leaves turn green and flowers become fragrantly in the school yard. I hope everything returns to the normal. And I’m expecting to go back to school soon.

When we use the term “disability,” many people think about those obvious disabilities like blindness. However, disabilities also include a number of other conditions that typically are invisible (无形) to others such as hearing problems and sleep disorders. 1. For example, someone with sclerosis (硬化症) looks “normal” but has to use a parking space for people with disabilities.

No one really knows for sure whether someone has an invisible disability unless it is disclosed (公开). The decision about whether to disclose an invisible disability can weigh heavily on an individual, making social and work situations especially challenging. The burden of hiding a disability creates stress in social and work situations that might affect health and well-being badly.

2. It also increases the possibility that the person will find and develop a social support network with others who might have similar conditions or experiences.

Despite the benefits of disclosing, research reports that individuals with invisible disabilities often do not disclose their conditions. 3. Reasons might be as follows. First, even if protected by law from discrimination, they still face potential prejudice from others. Second, when someone who “looks normal” says he has a disability and requests special services, people might question whether the disability really exists. 4. Sometimes, people might experience the symptoms without realizing.

5. They must carefully weigh the potential benefits of not disclosing against the cost to health and well-being. We should be aware of the unique challenges facing people with invisible disabilities and put ourselves in their shoes.

A.Invisible disabilities are more difficult to cure.

B.These conditions can make everyday activities difficult.

C.Individuals with invisible disabilities should make wise decisions.

D.On the contrary, disclosure relieves the stress of hiding the condition.

E.They might assume the person is only trying to gain special privileges.

F.Otherwise, people with invisible disabilities should disclose their conditions.

G.This is especially true if they are young and have recently acquired the disability.

Climate change leads to a threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be unrecognizable from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing severe erosion (侵蚀).

Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in a future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors-like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach’s health. The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and that the more heat-trapping gases humans put into the atmosphere, the worse the influences on the world’s beaches are likely to be.

It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast revolves around the beach for much of the year.

Some of the world’s most popular beaches are already taking action. Places like Miami Beach are trucking in thousands of tons of sand to patch up (修复) badly eroded shorelines, while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle.

However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world’s beaches. If the world’s governments are able to stick to modest cuts to heat-trapping gas pollution, the researchers found that 22%of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented, a number that grows to 40%by 2100 if greenhouse gases are limited.

1.Which is the biggest contributor to severe beach erosion?

A.Damaging storms. B.Wave erosion.

C.Coastal building. D.Sea level rise.

2.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A.It is hard to protect coastal beaches.

B.One third of storms take place near beaches.

C.Beaches are of great significance to our lives.

D.Most Australians live on beach tourism.

3.What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4?

A.Popularizing the beaches.

B.Holding sand in place.

C.Reducing the project costs.

D.Stopping global warming.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Half beaches could disappear by 2100.

B.Climate change is doing harm to our lives.

C.The beach is more than a vacation destination.

D.Governments are taking action to fight wave erosion.

Ice hockey’s beginning is a little uncertain. It has been tracked back to an Irish game known as hurley by some experts. Others consider ice hockey as having come from lacrosse and field games that were played by Micmac Indians. Still others say that hockey evolved in Northern Europe. At any rate, it is quite likely that ice hockey came into being from different early games played with a stick and a ball.

In the 1850s, the first recorded games of ice hockey were played, and in the 1870s, the first set of ice hockey rules were written by a group of students at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. These rules set up the use of a puck (冰球) replacing a ball and decided the number of players to be nine per team. The year 1880 brought the organization of the first amateur hockey league. Over the next several years, ice hockey’s popularity spread across Canada. It was around 1893 that ice hockey was first played in the United States. There have been several ice hockey leagues. The best known is the National Hockey League, which came into being in 1917 in Canada.

Ice hockey has the oldest sports trophy(奖杯)in North America. It had become so widespread in Canada that a trophy was presented by the Governor General of Canada to be awarded to the top hockey team. Lord Stanley of Preston was the name of the Governor General, and the trophy became Known as the Stanley Cup.

Not many changes have been made to the initial rules set forth in the 1870s. The main ones have been the decrease from nine players to six and the progression of new and better equipment. In 1910-11, the game changed from two 30-minute periods to three 20-minute periods. In 1943-44, the red line at center ice was introduced to speed up the game. In 2005-06, goalkeeper equipment was downsized.

1.When was the first amateur hockey league formed?

A.In the 1850s. B.In the 1870s.

C.In 1880. D.In 1893.

2.Where did the name of the Stanley Cup come from?

A.The top hockey team captain.

B.The Governor General of Canada.

C.The oldest sports trophy maker.

D.The leader of the first hockey league.

3.How has the ice hockey sport changed?

A.Its initial rules have been given up.

B.It has fewer players on a team.

C.Its total match time has been reduced.

D.It needs much less equipment.

4.What’s the text mainly about?

A.The rules of the ice hockey sport.

B.The great changes of the ice hockey sport.

C.The history of the ice hockey sport.

D.The development of the National Hockey League.

In 2000, when I was seven years old, my family and I were coming back from a T-ball game.  In our driveway, we spotted two adult geese and a baby goose. The adults were frightened by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly. We are no strangers to wildlife, so we avoided physical contact with the baby goose out of fear that it would keep us in its mind and be lost to its family forever.

Hours passed, and night fell. The baby goose needed protection, warmth and food. So we had to do something. We brought him onto our back porch (走廊). My sister called the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us making a peeping noise. We also decided that Peeper was a boy.

A year passed and we became best friends. Peeper slept on our back porch and used it as a restroom. My dad would spray off his droppings daily with a hose (软管). Part of this routine included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air, letting him fly around the house and come back once the porch was clean. One evening, my uncle came over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper’s flight. He threw him up in the air, but Peeper just flew off. Everyone was sad. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory.

Geese live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal, never forgetting their first home. Even so, it shocked me when, in 2019, an old adult goose appeared at my house. After two weeks of the goose coming back repeatedly, I believe this wasn’t a random goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to and responded to the name Peeper. Much to my amazement, my old best friend had returned, 20 years later.

This experience has been as meaningful to me as anything in my life. I hope that my children,  someday, have the opportunity to connect with nature and a wild being in this same way.

1.Why did the writer’s family avoid physical contact with the baby goose at first?

A.They were worried about its health.

B.They didn’t know what to do with it.

C.They feared being attacked by its parents.

D.They didn’t want it to take them as its family.

2.Why did the writer’s dad throw the goose into the sky every day?

A.To prepare it to fly off some day.

B.To clean it by spraying water.

C.To have it practise flying skills.

D.To show his tricks of training.

3.What made the writer recognize the goose?

A.Its voice. B.Its appearance.

C.Its age. D.Its behavior.

4.How does the writer find this experience?

A.Discouraging. B.Rewarding.

C.Pitiful. D.Entertaining.

Humans have been battling viruses since before we had even evolved into our modern form, but we’re a long way from winning the fight against them. Here are a few of the worst killers.

Marburg virus

Scientists identified Marburg virus in 1967, when small outbreaks occurred among lab workers in Germany who were exposed to infected monkeys. The infected people develop high fevers and bleeding throughout the body. Marburg can be passed on from human to human via direct contact. The death rate is 80%in the 1998-2000 outbreak in Congo and in the 2005 outbreak in Angola.

Ebola virus

The first known Ebola outbreaks in humans struck Africa in Sudan and Congo in 1976. The natural host of Ebola is bats. The virus is spread through contact with infected people or animals.  Symptoms include fever, bleeding and organ failure. The death rate is 50%to 70%.

Hantavirus

Hantavirus was first recognized as an infectious disease in the 1950s in Korea. But it first gained wide attention in the U. S. in 1993, when a healthy young man and his fiancee died within days of developing shortness of breath. Hantavirus was isolated from a deer mouse. More than 600 people in the U. S. are now infected and 36%have died. The virus doesn’t spread from human to human.

Mers-CoV virus

Mers-CoV virus had an outbreak in Asia, Saudi Arabia in 2012 and South Korea in 2015. The virus likely originated in bats. The disease infected camels before passing into humans and causes fever and shortness of breath. It has a death rate between 30%and 40%, making it the most deadly of the known coronavirus (冠状病毒) family. Mers-CoV spreads from one person to another.

1.Which virus caused the highest death rate in a particular area?

A.Marburg virus. B.Ebola virus.

C.Hantavirus. D.Mers-CoV virus.

2.What can we know about Hantavirus?

A.It is a type of coronaviruses. B.It was identified in the 21st century.

C.It was first found in the United States. D.It only spreads from animals to humans.

3.In what sense are Ebola virus and Mers-CoV virus similar?

A.They may have the same host. B.They originate in the same continent.

C.They belong to the same virus family. D.They have exactly the same symptoms.

How to avoid a boring conversation

What excuse should you use to avoid talking to people you don’t want to talk to? Here are tips and non-offensive ways to get out of unwanted conversations.

1. Go for a refill.

It is natural for anyone at a party to be excused to get a refill. 1. And once you excuse yourself, make a move fast before the person requests you to get a refill for him as well.

2. Pretend bad mood.

Cut off the conversation before it starts by saying something along the lines of “I’m not in a good mood. Can I talk to you later if you don’t mind? 2. Say it firmly so that people get the message loud and clear.

3. Ask your friend to save you.

3. Simply text your friend and ask him or her to come for apparently something important. You will be able to skip a boring chat with a seemingly reasonable excuse.

4. 4.

You are advised to look away from that person and don’t make eye contact, so that you can give powerful hints that you find the conversation extremely boring. 5. Be sure to tune in to the conversation every now and then so you don’t come across as rude.

A.Behave in an obviously careless way.

B.Just be sure that the person you are talking to does not offer to accompany you to do so.

C.Don’t act too polite in an attempt to draw sympathy.

D.Use body language to indicate boredom.

E.Your friend is bound to perform brilliantly in coping with the dull one.

F.Look elsewhere and pretend that something else has caught your attention.

G.Stuck in an unwanted conversation, how do you get out of it?

As Simon Kindleysides, 34, took his first step in the London Marathon in April, he felt as if magic was in the air.

"As we were walking toward the first mile, we actually started joining all the runners," he said. "Everyone was on the streets, cheering, and that was a magical moment." As time went on, the crowds and other racers spread around. Kindleysides and his team of eight supporters continued walking.

Kindleysides, who is paralyzed(瘫痪的)from the waist down and typically uses a wheelchair, was equipped with an exoskeleton(体外骨骼)to help him walk. His supporters walked with him to change the batteries in his exoskeleton so he could keep moving.

In 2013, Kindleysides was diagnosed with a brain tumor (肿瘤) that was growing in a way that pressed on certain nerves, leading to him losing feeling in his legs. He was told he would never walk again. Before his paralysis, the London-based singer and dancer had "always wanted to run a marathon," he said, but he never made the plan to do so--until this year.

During the London Marathon, the last two miles were the hardest. "At that point, I was exhausted. It was freezing cold, and I was hurting emotionally," Kindleysides said. But he kept going. "I didn't want to let people down. I had a team of eight, and I was raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity," he said. "I didn't want to let them down, myself down, and I thought if I would get this far, I would have to continue."So he continued and made history as the first paralyzed man to complete the London Marathon on foot.

Then, recovering at home, he shared his accomplishment with his three children. "They used to say I'm the only dad in their whole school who's in a wheelchair, and now they say I'm their dad, the only one who has walked a marathon," he said.

Kindleysides is training to complete three more marathons next year, including the London Marathon again.

1.Why did Kindleysides' supporters accompany him all the way?

A. To help change the batteries. B. To inspire him as a team.

C. To guide him along the road. D. To assist him with the wheelchair.

2.What caused Kindleysides' disability?

A. An operation on his brain for the tumor.

B. An accident in the previous marathon.

C. Some nerves produced out of the tumor.

D. The pressure from the brain tumor on the nerves.

3.What partly supported Kindleysides to finish the hardest two-mile race?

A. The prize money for the winner. B. The strong desire to recover.

C. The kindness to help the charity. D. The belief to beat others.

4.What can we learn about Kindleysides?

A. He was once a successful actor.

B. He is ambitious for joining in London marathons once more.

C. His children feel a pity for him in the wheelchair now.

D. He was the first disabled man to complete the London Marathon.
