Little snow had fallen this winter. For Reuven the furrier it was a bad year, and after long hesitation he decided to sell Zlateh the old goat. The town butcher had offered eight silver coins for the goat. Reuven told his oldest boy, Aaron, to take the goat to town. Aaron understood what it meant, but he had to obey his father. His sisters cried loudly.

Aaron took a1ong two slices of bread to eat on the road. He needed to deliver the goat by evening and return the next day with the money. While the family said goodbye, Zlateh stood as patiently as ever. Zlateh trusted human beings.

The sun was shining when Aaron 1eft. Suddenly the weather changed, and after a while it began to snow. Soon their path was completely covered and Aaron got lost. Beneath the snow Aaron’s boots touched the softness of a plowed field. He realized that he was no longer on the road. Z1ateh bleated as if asking to be taken home. Aaron looked around hoping to find a farmer driving a sleigh along the way. But he could see nothing.

Aaron knew that if they did not find shelter, they would freeze to death. Suddenly he made out the shape of a hill. When he came near it, he realized that it was a large haystack covered by snow. Aaron knew that they were saved. When he reached the hay, he dug a nest for himself and the goat. It was always warm in the hay. And hay was food for Zlateh.

Zlateh, sat down and seemed to have regained her confidence in man. Aaron ate his breadbut after the difficult journey he was still hungry. He looked at Z1ateh and realized that he would not be starved to death. Goat’s milk was sweet. Zlateh ate frequently and her body gave forth an animal warmth, and Aaron hugged her tightly.     To deal with a changing world, we have to change as well. Transforming land into farms removes forests and worsens climate change. But we need to grow more food to support a growing global population. What can we do?

Scientists have discovered that plants grow best under a certain type of light, which can be provided by red and blue LEDs. The combination of these lights at the right level makes a space look pink. Since “pinkhouses” supply their own light, they don’t need to have fragile glass walls and ceilings. And they can be set up anywhere, including places that don’t get the amount of light greenhouses need.

Since pinkhouses can pack food in huge columns, one of these farms doesn’t need a lot of land. Farmers can set up pinkhouses in cities. They completely control temperature and light, which can help some plants grow twice as well in pinkhouses as they do in traditional farming. Pinkhouses can allow for many more harvests per year since farming doesn’t have to stop in the winter.

Even though pinkhouses are a great way to grow crops, lighting and heating an indoor space is very expensive. It doesn’t make sense to grow foods that take up a lot of space or that we need to grow lots of, like wheat, rice, and corn, in a pinkhouse. We will still need to grow those crops in fields. We can start farming smarter.

Farmers will use satellite imagery to figure out exactly where to plant each crop. Think of a mixture of just the fight crops, rather than a rectangle of one type of plant. Sensors in the fields will measure the soil’s water leveltemperature, and chemical content. They will even be able to detect insects and send out notifications to a smartphone app. Irrigation systems will be tied to weather forecasting programs, allowing very precise watering and care, all calculated to get the best plant growth and yield.

1.From the text, we know that the pinkhouse________.

A.covers lots of space B.needs enough sunlight

C.is made of glass or plastic D.can make plants grow larger

2.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4?

A.Summarize the previous paragraphs. B.Emphasize the advantage of pinkhouses.

C.Introduce a new topic of the discussion. D.Add some background information.

3.What is the result of the smart farming?

A.Farmers will have a better harvest. B.Farmers can grow different plants.

C.Farmers needn’t care about the weather. D.Plants can protect themselves against insects.

4.What’s the best title for the text?

A.Building Pinkhouses B.Feeding the Future

C.Changing the World D.Getting Outdoor Farming Smart

It has been a year since I first saw UBTech’s Walker robot at CES 2019. I was blown away by its ability to perform many tasks.

A year later, it had come a long way, gaining much better motor skills and the ability to maintain balance. During a CES 2020 demo, UBTech showed how far Walker had come. The robot walked over to a table, picked up a bottle opener and used it to remove the cap from a bottle of soda. It picked up the bottle and a glass and poured the liquid in, without spilling. During the demo, Walker also performed a number of serious Yoga poses, including standing on one foot and leaning back.

UBTech said that the ability to pour drinks required visual servo technology using its cameras to judge the position of objects. The same methods allowed Walker to uncap a marker and draw a picture of a flower on a piece of paper at another point in the demo.

All of the betterment was made via software as UBTech hasn’t made any physical adjustments to the robot since we saw it last year. On the inside, the robot uses a combination of a few different operating systems on these internal PCs, including Ubuntu, ROS and Android. Its battery promises up to 2 hours battery life after a 2-hour charge time.

UBTech continues development on this pioneering robot, but doesn’t have public launch date. The company is targeting Walker toward the home, with an emphasis on helping seniors or just doing house cleaning. To make it stable enough to adapt to all these different conditions is a huge challenge. However, if development of Walker continues, this robot could eventually be a game-changer.

1.How did the author feel when first seeing the robot?

A.Amazed. B.Proud.

C.Awkward. D.Disappointed.

2.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The demos of CES 2019. B.The improvements of the robot.

C.The robot’s motor ability. D.The robot’s ability to remain steady.

3.What enables the robot to draw pictures?

A.The cap of the marker. B.The ability to pour drinks.

C.The using of more cameras. D.The system of position judging.

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The robot is stable enough to help the old.

B.The robot has been available to the public.

C.Our life could be greatly influenced by the robot.

D.The basic concept of robot making will be changed.

Every two or three months, Thyago Ohana goes out on the busy streets of Vienna with a sign saying “Free Hugs”. The handsome 32-year-old Brazilian, who works in international trade at India’s Vienna embassy, chooses a popular site, like the historic shopping street, Kaemtner Strasse. There he opens his arms to anyone who wants a hearty embrace (拥抱).

He does it because back in 2012, when he was feeling very stressed and anxious during a visit to Paris, a stranger gave him a free hug. He’s never forgotten how it filled him with unexpected calm and joy.

For those who take up his offer, the hug makes them laugh and smile. But sometimes it does more, as when an elderly woman in a tour group stopped and watched him. The group moved on, but she remained and asked, “Can I have a hug?” “Of course you can!” said Thyago who wrapped his arms round her. When they broke their embrace, she kept holding onto his shoulders and looked into his eyes. “Thank you,” she said. “I can’t remember the last time I was hugged this way.”

It’s a memory that still makes Thyago emotional. “It was a really powerful moment of human connection. It’s why I keep doing it.”

Of our live senses, our sense of touch is the one that is most easily taken for granted. “A child can be born blind or deaf and they will grow up just fine,” says David J Linden, author of Touch. The Science of Hand, Heart and Mind. “Yet if a baby is lacking in loving social touch for the first two years of life, then all sorts of disasters unfold.” That’s one reason why when babies are born, they are now usually placed on their mother’s skin.

Linden says however you do it, “maximizing touch in your life is a good thing”— whether holding hands, petting a dog, going to the hairdresser, hugging our kids, our partners or even a stranger.

1.Why did Thyago Ohana offer free hugs to strangers?

A.He longed for calm and joy.

B.He felt stressed and upset.

C.He wanted others to feel connected and cared.

D.He hoped to help others cure their diseases.

2.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 suggest?

A.Our sense of touch isn’t so important.

B.Our sense of touch is undervalued.

C.Our sense of touch does no good to us.

D.Our sense of touch is thought highly of.

3.What does David J Linden think of social touch?

A.The way of offering social touch counts.

B.Offering hugs is the best way to get social touch.

C.Blind kids will be cured as long as they get enough social touch.

D.Many problems can be tracked back to babyhood short of social touch.

4.Where is this text most likely from?

A.A health magazine. B.A research paper.

C.A guide book. D.A biology textbook.

Jack was gone.

For six years, Jack had lived four floors directly below him. If it hadn’t been for the fire escape, the two best friends could have seen each other by sticking their heads out of their bedroom windows.

Every summer had been filled with bike rides and baseball, but last summer—the summer of Cyclops—had been the best.

Kyle and Jack had created the pulley contraption (滑轮), which Jack named Cyclops, from old bicycles, a backpack and a long rope. It ran beside the fire escape, and anything that fit into the pack could be slid from Kyle to Jack and back again. Cyclops had exchanged messages, comics and even chocolate cookies between windows.

Three days ago, Jack said good-bye to Kyle, saying his family was moving. Cyclops’ backpack rested on the fire escape outside Jack’s empty bedroom.

Staring at the ceiling over his bed, Kyle felt sad and lonely. Zzzoop! Kyle ran to the window, only to find Cyclops rushing toward him. ‘‘Jack?” he shouted. Kyle opened the backpack and found a note “This is cool. Did you make it?” Disappointed, he threw the note away and closed the window, muttering (咕哝着) to the faceless stranger in Jack’s room, “Forget it.”

Minutes later, Kyle ran his eyes over Cyclops. Having read one page of his favorite comic, he looked at it again. He wrote a note. “Who are you?” Zzzooop! “I’m Max.” “I’m Kyle. How old are you?”

Cyclops whirred (呼呼地响), carrying notes between Kyle and Max. They discovered they would be in Mrs. Parker’ fifth grade class next year. They both loved riding bikes and playing baseball but hated strawberry jam.

Kyle sent three cookies and a note down. Cyclops ran between the windows as Kyle and Max made crucial decisions, like how to go to the zoo, when and where to meet. “Feel like going to the zoo tomorrow? Zzzooop! “OK.”

Cycling or Running?

Aerobic (有氧) exercise is an effective tool to assist with fat loss. It can be fun and help build up your body. Running and cycling, for example, are both good for you. 1. Read on and make an informed decision.

Metabolic (代谢) Level

At the metabolic level, fast running beats fast cycling. There is also the fact that when you’re riding downhill, you’re essentially at rest because you’re coasting. Not so with running. 2. You’re also getting more of a total body workout with running than you get with cycling.

Difficulty Of Adoption

You could ride a bike for hours. With no pounding on your joints, you can go far and fast. Now compare that to taking up running. The first few times you try running, you will breathe heavily, wondering why on earth you’re putting yourself through such suffering. It takes enormous determination for most people to become runners. 3.

Racing

Foot races are popular the world over. There are 5Ks, 10Ks, half and full and ultra-marathons. Any decent-sized city will have your choice of races. 4. It forces you to train and pushes you to get better. Contrarilyit’s harder to find many races for cycling.

Convenience

In terms of convenience, running can’t match cycling. You will reach a specific destination way faster on a bike than by running. It’s also easier for carrying things on a bike.

5. Both cycling and running have something to offer. It’s about analyzing their respective advantages and deciding what’s right for you.

A.Truth be told, there is no winner.

B.Entering them can be very motivating.

C.You can do more caloric burn in less time with running.

D.So it’s not hard to find that cycling is just easier to get into.

E.It is definitely beneficial to take part in both of the two sports.

F.But maybe you are in two minds about which one to engage in.

G.You can handle any kind of bad condition when it comes to running.

Although the Poetry Out Loud (POL) National Finals were cancelled due to COVID-19, it is announced that they’re working with their POL partner, the Poetry Foundation, to explore ways to honor the 2020 state POL champions.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self- confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, POL has grown to reach more than 3. 8 million students and 60,000 teachers from 16,000 schools.

POL uses a pyramid structure that starts at the classroom level. Winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to a state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals. Awards and placements are determined only by the judges’ scores based on the POL Evaluation Criteria.

Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult to Washington, DC to compete for the national championship. The state winner’s school receives $500 for the purchase of poetry materials. At the national finals, a total of $50,000 is awarded annually.

The free materials POL provides include an online poetry anthology (诗集), a teacher’s guide, videos of student performances, lesson plans and promotional and media resources. Hard copies of materials are available for teachers participating in the official program but anyone can access the online materials at poetryoutloud.org.

Poetry creates a space for empathy (共鸣) that no other art does, so POL as a program creates a really inclusive space where the students read poets of different cultural backgrounds. Khadijah Ceesay, the 2019 POL champion, said at the award ceremony, “Going out to compete and meet different people after the same goal, to share poetry, has been eye opening because It’s given me a chance to see different interpretations and meanings behind words. It’s also taught me the power and weight that words hold.”

1.We can infer from the text that ________.

A.no 2020 POL final champion will be honored

B.the POL will come to an end because of COVID-19

C.the 2020 POL admits the fewest participants since 2005

D.the Poetry Foundation saves a lot in honoring the champions

2.How can participants qualify for the finals?

A.By gaining judges’ favorable evaluation.

B.By obtaining schools’ recommendation.

C.By winning step-by-step promotion.

D.By getting online public support.

3.What do we know about the POL materials?

A.They are only accessible online.

B.All participants should buy them.

C.Only teachers can get some hard copies.

D.Schools are allowed to buy the materials.

4.What’s the best title of the text?

A.The Magic of English Poetry

On February 6, 2020, American astronaut Christina Koch arrived back on Earth after 328 days in space. Her time in space is just one of the records set by herself. That’s the longest spaceflight ever made by a woman, and just one of the many things Ms. Koch achieved in space.

Ms. Koch took off from Earth for the International Space Station (ISS) on March 12, 2019. While in space, she made 5, 248 trips around the Earth, travelling 2, 237 million kilometers, which is roughly the same as 291 trips to the Moon and back. During her 11 months on the ISS, Ms. Koch took part in six spacewalks, spending over 42 hours in all outside the station. In October of 2019, Ms. Koch led the first ever all-female spacewalk with Jessica Meir.

But for most astronauts, space travel isn’t about setting records. It’s about doing science. Ms. Koch took part in a wide variety of special experiments, including studying how crystals (晶体) grow in space, how atoms (原子) behave in extreme cold and learning more about growing plants in low gravity. Growing plants in space could be an important way to provide food on future trips. She also tested a new way of separating liquids from gases. This experiment could lead to simple methods of cleaning water and air in space, which could be very important for future space travel.

Ms. Koch isn’t just a scientist and an astronaut. She is also being studied. She’s part of a NASA program studying how astronauts are affected by being in space for long periods of time. Her trip was only 12 days shorter than the American record set by Scott Kelly in 2016. As they did with Mr. Kelly, NASA scientists are looking carefully at ways Ms. Koch’s body has been affected by her time in space. That research is important for the longer space trips NASA hopes to make in the future, such as for a base on the moon or a trip to Mars.

1.Which of the following is an achievement Ms. Koch has made?

Unhealthy diets are responsible for preventable deaths globally per year, more even than smoking tobacco, according to a major study.

“But the biggest problem is not the junk we eat but the nutritious food we don’t eat,” say researchers, calling for a global shift in policy to promote vegetables, fruit, nuts and beans. While sugar and trans-fats are harmful, more deaths are caused by the absence of healthy foods in our diet. Heart attacks are the main diet-related causes of death, followed by cancers and diabetes (糖尿病).

The study found that eating and drinking better could prevent one in five deaths around the world. “Rather than trying to persuade people to cut down on sugar, salt and fat, which has been the main focus of diet policy debate in the past two decades, it would be better to promote healthy options. Adoption of diets emphasizing beans and other healthy plant sources of protein, for instance, will have important benefits for human health,” note the researchers.

The study is the most comprehensive analysis on the health effects of diet ever conducted. It looked at 15 different nutrients, giving detailed knowledge of the analysis and summary of the risk factors of them.

Tom Sanders, a professor of nutrition and dietetics (饮食学), said the analysis put too much emphasis on individual components rather than the overall diet. “Overweight is a major driver for risk of diabetes as well as cancer and the health evidence for this relationship is strong. Overweight is caused by eating more food energy than required rather than specific dietary components such as sugar. The trend for populations to sit too much is a major reason why there is an imbalance between energy intake and consumption but Increased availability of foods with high calories makes it too easy to overeat.”

1.What do the researchers think is the best way to lower preventable death rate?

A.Restricting junk food. B.Trying to eat healthily.

C.Avoiding risk factors. D.Adopting high-calorie diets.

2.What’s the major concern of the current diet policy?

A.The diversity of food.

B.The importance of nutritious food.

C.The reduction of unhealthy food intake.

D.The balance between diet and exercise.

3.Which of the following does Tom Sanders agree with?

A.The analysis overlooks dietary integrity.

B.Overweight results from diabetes and cancer.

C.People who rarely exercise must diet strictly.

D.Particular dietary components lead to overweight.

4.Where is the text most likely from?

A.A product brochure. B.A cookbook.

C.A medical textbook. D.A health journal.

Bahamas’ 4 Best Budget Beachfront Hotels

Hundreds of islands and beaches in Bahamas have long been attractions for travelers. Here are 4 unique beach destinations.

Pigeon Cay Beach Club

Pigeon Cay Beach Club is located on the largely undeveloped Cat Island, where it’s possible to wander the coastline for miles without spotting a soul. TVs, AC, and Wi-Fi are all off-duty, leaving guests to explore the island by bike and boat. Meals can be served at the beach bar, on the beach, or in the cottages, which all have full kitchens and furnished outdoor spaces.

Compass Point Beach Resort

Compass Point Beach Resort may be Bahamas’ most interesting property. The resort was opened in 1995 by a music producer. Its appearance is as noticeable as its history. It’s composed of 18 rainbow-colored small wooden houses. All rooms have surround-sound music systems, open-air kitchens and dining spaces.

Stella Maris Resort Club

If you’re looking for a casual, cheerful, and cheap life, the beachfront Stella Maris Resort Club more than fits the bill. The large, family-owned complex is a bargain for its competitive rates and accommodations that suit larger parties. One of the highlights of the resort is its range of activities, many of which are free, including day trips, boating, nature walks and caving.

St Francis Resort

If you want to go off the Internet, St Francis Resort is as remote as you can get. The resort is only accessible by boat and has little human development: no cars, no roads, and only about two dozen residents. But it’s not all peace and quiet: the restaurant draws plenty of boaters and day-travelers and the hotel hosts activities like poker nights and weekly barbecues.

1.What characteristic do Pigeon Cay Beach Club and St Francis Resort share?

A.They are undeveloped and poorly-furnished. B.They offer various night outdoor activities.

C.They are rich in unique local culture. D.They have no access to the Internet.
