The traditional Chinese name chop (名章) or seal has been used for thousands of years. 1. is quite likely that people began using name chops because Chinese characters are so complex and few people in ancient times2.(be) able to read and write. In addition, chops date back to a time3.there was no other form of4.(identify) such as ID cards.

A chop also served as a valid signature. All official5.(document) in China needed a chop to be valid. Today, most Chinese are educated, but the tradition6.(keep) alive in China.

There are many different sizes and styles of chops. Inexpensive small chops can be carved 10.wood or plastic — upmarket chops are made from ivory, jade, marble or steel. Only a special type of slow-drying red ink is used for a name chop, so if you buy a chop in China, get an inkpad (印泥盒) too.

It is 5 am and it’s too dark to see the fields of volcanic rock and trees on either side of the highway. But over the lights of my car, I get a taste of the _________ I’m really here for, as a few stars Pierce (渗透) the inky _________ sky.

Putting children in daycare helps working parents take their minds off childcare. 1.

How daycare negatively affects children is related to many factors. One study has suggested that some children who spend long hours in daycare centers experience more stress than those who spend more time in a setting with a mother.

Another study has shown that children who are shy have a higher level of the hormone cortisol (皮质醇) which is released when an individual shows signs of stress. 2. And as a result the child may not mix well with the other children and the teachers at the daycare center, a situation that can cause stress.

Another negative impact of daycare is that there is less communication between a mother and her child. 3. So it is essential for a child to develop a deep bond with his or her mother, since this will lay the foundation for all the relationships he or she will form later on in life. Children who spend a lot of time with their mothers experience healthy social and emotional development, while long hours in daycare can disrupt this bonding. Children who lose out on precious mother-child bonding are observed to have behavioral problems as they grow older.

Children in daycare centers also feel unprotected compared to children at home. In a daycare center, when one caregiver attends to more than one child at the same time, she may not be able to look deeply into why a child is mixing well or not. 4. Another negative aspect of daycare is that children there are more likely to fall ill if they come in contact with sick children.

5. Well-maintained daycare centers contribute a great deal to the overall development of a child by providing a structured environment. Children become more social by interacting with other children of the same age, and learn new activities that are not always available if they arc brought up only at home.

A.But daycare has its disadvantages.

B.Look for a daycare center that is well-maintained.

C.However, the advantages of daycare cannot be ignored.

D.This is because a shy child will not open up freely in public.

E.Babies become extremely attached to their primary caregivers.

F.In such cases, a child may become either completely quiet or aggressive.

G.You can cut the time in daycare centers by making alternative childcare arrangements.

Just last monthAI-generated art arrived on the auction (拍卖) stage of Christie’s, proving that artificial intelligence can not only be creative but also produce world-class works of art — another significant AI milestone blurring the line between human and machine.

Naturally, the news sparked off debates about whether the work produced by Paris-based art collective Obvious could really be called art at all. Popular opinion among creatives is that art is a process by which human beings express some ideas or emotions, filter them through personal experience and set them against a broader cultural context. The story raised additional questions about ownership. In this circumstancewho can really be named as the author? The algorithm (算法) itself or the team behind it?

At GumGum, an AI company that focuses on computer vision, we wanted to explore the intersection of AI and art by devising a Turing Test of our own in association with Rutgers University’s Art and Artificial Intelligence Lab and Cloudpainter, an artificially intelligent painting robot. We were keen to see whether AI canin fact, replicate (复制) the intent and imagination of traditional artists, and we wanted to explore the potential impact of AI on the creative sector.

To do thiswe enlisted a broad collection of diverse artists from traditional pain-on-canvas artists to 3-D rendering and modeling artists alongside Pindar Van Arman — a classically trained artist who has been coding art robots for 15 years. Van Arman was tasked with using his Cloudpainter machine to create pieces of art based on the same data set as the more traditional artists. This data set was a collection of art by 20th century American Abstract Expressionists. Then, we asked them to document the process, showing us their preferred tools and telling us how they came to their final work.

Amazingly, while at face value the AI artwork was indistinguishable from that of the more traditional artists, the test revealed that the creative spark and ultimate agency behind creating a work of art is still very much human. Even though the Cloudpainter machine has evolved over time to become a highly intelligent system capable of making creative decisions of its own, the final piece of work could only be described as a collaboration (合作) between human and machine. Van Arman served as more of an “art director for the painting”.

As AI becomes an unstoppable force, it raises some difficult questions about the future role of humans in an increasingly automated world. Instead of worrying about AI’s threat to human creative supremacy, the future will be about accepting new technologies and the possibilities it brings for speeding up the process. It’s better to think of AI as your next creative assistant; beautiful pieces of work can be produced in collaboration with it.

1.According to popular opinion, the AI-generated work_______.

A.should have been based on personal experience

B.was set against a broader cultural context

C.couldn’t be considered art at all

D.expresses no idea or emotion

2.What did the experiment at GumGum show?

A.AI artworks could be easily identified

B.AI artworks could show human emotions.

C.AI had trouble making sensible decisions.

D.AI couldn’t complete a work independently.

3.Which of the following statements would the author agree with?

A.Beautiful pieces cannot be works of AI.

B.AI could be an advanced tool for artists.

C.AI could challenge the supremacy of humans.

D.New technologies can pose a danger to humans.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Can AI Create True Art? B.Can AI Threaten Humans?

C.Will Human Art Disappear? D.Are AI Artworks Distinguishable?

When you don’t have a car and need to get around, are you more likely to call for an Uber or Lyft, or a cab? Last Friday, Lyft — the ride-sharing company, went public as its stocks (股票) started trading on the market. Lyft has become the first big initial public offering of the “gig economy” age. While the company is not making profits yet, it is changing the meaning of work. What is gig economy and what makes it so appealing?

Gig works are independent contracts (合同) or part-time jobs such as Uber. In the gig economy, companies hire independent contractors instead of full-time employees. This is different from traditional companies where full-time workers hold a lifetime career. In the past, only small companies hired contractors, while today, employers like Amazon and Google rely on temporary workforce. These companies save costs as they are not legally required to provide healthcare benefits, retirement savings or paid time off to gig workers.

Gig work appeals to different people for different reasons. For some, it affords flexible timings and for otliers who are looking for full-time jobs, it provides a source of income to support themselves. Some people work a full-time job and supplement (补充) their salary with gig jobs such as driving for Uber or Lyft.

Joining the gig economy may be simple, but maintaining a steady career is easier said than done. Gig work comes with unsteady pay and workloads. You're your own boss. It sounds fun, but when you have no self-control and an unsteady job, you might splurge all your money the first week and live on bread pieces for the rest of the month! Besides a strong sense of responsibility, gig workers have to stay up to date to get companies to hire them.

Despite the challenges gig workers face, nearly 60 million Americans are part of this workforce. As this number grows, we have to see how society and companies adapt to this new world of work!

1.What can be learnt about Lyft from the passage?

A.It has built up a large fortune.

B.It marks the arrival of gig economy age.

C.It employs a fixed number of full-time workers.

D.It appeals to people as a means of public transport.

2.Who are most likely to become gig workers?

A.People seeking for a steady income.

B.Those desperate to get paid vacations.

C.People in need of flexible working hours.

D.Those concerned about retirement accounts.

3.What does the underlined word “splurge” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Spend money freely. B.Deposit money automatically.

C.Earn money quickly. D.Allocate money randomly.

4.What is the message mainly conveyed in the passage?

A.Gig workers have to face some potential challenges.

B.Gig workers have to possess some much-needed qualities.

C.The appearance of gig companies will solve the job problems.

D.People should adjust to new work trends with the rise of gig companies.

When Lina was awoken by the sound of thunder, she was alone on the island. The air was cool and bullfrogs croaked. It was that brief moment when the summer sun had set but the stars hadn't yet appeared. Lina rubbed her eyes and looked around.

“Hello?” she called. “Celia? Marie”

There was no response.

The moon was rising now, shedding light on the island. They had always called it “Forgotten Island” because no one but they seemed to remember its existence. It wasn’t on any of the maps they could find, and even the forest rangers didn’t know about it. Lina loved that the island, hidden in a heavily-wooded side stream of the river, was a secret between the three friends — her, Celia, and Marie.

But now Lina was here alone, and it was night. Worse still, it was her own fault.

“Come on, Lina, let Marie row the boat.” Celia had said. Marie was two years older than Lina, but she was a hopeless rower. That’s why Lina refused and rowed the boat to the island. The argument that followed the refusal took the usual form. Celia took Marie’s side, as she always did. Lina had exploded and yelled at them to just leave. So they got back in the boat and left.

A bolt of lightning crossed the darkened sky, accompanied by a deafening thunder clap. The storm was here. As the first cold raindrop slid down her neck, Lina’s mind returned to her current problem. She was stuck here by herself. She just hoped she didn’t become as forgotten as the island. The thought of it sent a chill (寒意) down her back.

Suddenly, Lina spotted something in the water. It was a boat, and inside it were Marie, Celia, and Marie's dad, who was steering through the fast flowing waters. As the boat approached, they saw Lina waving and the worried expressions on their faces turned to relief.

In her excitement Lina jumped into the river. Only once she was in the icy water did she remember how fast the water was moving. Luckily a strong arm reached into the water and pulled her out. She smiled weakly at Marie’s dad and, without a word, hugged Celia and Marie. They didn’t seem to mind becoming wet.

1.What can be inferred about the island?

A.It is very near the ocean.

B.It is a popular place for boating.

C.It is surrounded by thick forest.

D.It has never been reached by others.

2.Why did Lina get angry?

A.Marie would not help row the boat.

B.Lina was left alone on the island.

C.Marie didn't know how to row the boat.

D.Celia supported Marie in the disagreement.

3.What caused Lina to feel a chill?

A.Her shame about the unnecessary argument.

B.The first raindrops of the approaching storm.

C.The idea that no one would come to save her.

D.The drop in temperature as the sun went down.

4.Who pulled Lina out of the water?

A.Marie’s father.

B.Lina herself.

C.Marie.

D.CeliA.

Recently, China has faced the COVID-19 challenge with great strengths. Foreigners are amazing at the extraordinary response of the Chinese government but the Chinese people.

Indeed, we have great confident that China will get past this difficulty. In fact, they are positive signs such as the International Monetary Fund expressing its support to China's efforts and believe that China's economy remains steady.

The challenge is unquestionably great but China's approach to dealing this situation is admirable. For an example, the two huge field hospitals have been built quick in Wuhan with 2,600 beds. One of them, Huoshenshan Hospital, were completed in just 10 days.

People have been enjoying the benefits of cycling in Amsterdam for years. 1. Today some people call Amsterdam “City of Bicycles” because of these conveniences for bicycles there.

2. They believed that it would be better for all if only bicycles were allowed in the city centre. They were hopeful that this would help to save energy, reduce pollution and provide free public transport. The group painted hundreds of bicycles white and placed them in public places around Amsterdam for people to use. Anyone was allowed to take them and use them for short journeys, whether he/she was a local or a foreigner When someone finished a journey, they would leave the bike there for someone else to use. The problem was that it didn’t work. 3.

However, more than thirty years later, the “white bike” is back in town this time with a computer chip (芯片) to record its every move!4.The new “white bike” is not white more but is an unusual design with bright colors. The bikes are parked at special parking places and people? who want to use them haw to take them to another place that has enough room.

Now both local people and tourists have been using the white bikes as they travel in the city of Amsterdam.5..Gradually, due to the good ideas of lots of people, like the cycling fans in the 1960s, many people around the world have been enjoying city centre streets without car for many years.

A.Thieves took all the bicycles within weeks!

B.As a result, there is less traffic in central Amsterdam.

C.To take a bicycle, you have to put a special chip card inside.

D.The city is flat and there are plenty of places for bicycle parking.

E.With more people using the bicycles, the city air has become fresher.

F.People in Amsterdam arc especially crazy about protecting the environment.

G.It all started in the 1960s when a group of cycling fans came up with a good idea.

Are people happier in nature with blue skies overhead and fresh green grass underfoot? Could noisy streets, crowded with cars and people, make us unhappy?

The possible mental health problems of city living affect a lot of people. The World Health Organization estimates(估计)that 56 percent of the world's population lived in urban areas in 2019. The WHO adds that that amount will increase to 66 percent by 2050. People often move to cities for better jobs and more cultural activities. But are they putting themselves at risk? Maybe. Experts at the American Psychiatry Association say that “natural environments or green spaces” do much good to our mental health.

Many studies have shown that nature can calm us and make us feel happy. Nature, experts say, can also help us learn better. And experiencing nature helps people recover from the mental tiredness that comes from day-to-day work. On the other hand, mental health experts say some research suggests that city living might hurt our mental health. But they cannot say exactly why.

What are the specific aspects of the urban environment which causes some people to develop mental illness? Andrea Mechelli, a doctor at Kings College, London, states, “There have been studies where people were literally taken out of an urban environment into a rural (乡村的) environment and their symptoms would improve. And we also see that the greater the city is, the greater the risk is.” Mechelli say that someone who lives in a city is three times more likely to develop psychological problem than someone living in the country.

Kings College researchers, along with city planners, land and building designers and others wanted to learn more about city living and mental illness. So, they created a smartphone app called Urban Mind. They say they wanted to understand how different parts of the urban environment affect mental wellbeing(健康).

The researchers found that being outdoors, seeing trees, hearing birdsong, seeing the sky, and feeling in contact with nature were associated with higher levels of mental well-being. They also found that these seeming effects of nature were especially strong in those individuals at greater risk of mental health problems. The Urban Mind Project team says it hopes “the results will inform future urban planning and social policy aimed at improving design and health.”

1.Why is the question raised in the first paragraph?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

B.To show the background of the text.

C.To ask the readers to learn the study.

D.To raise the readers' interest in happiness.

2.What does Mechelli find during his study?

A.People are attracted by the blue skies and green grass.

B.People are more content with their city life.

C.More and more people are interested in taking risks in cities,

D.City people are more likely to develop mental problems than country people.

3.What is expected of the Urban Mind research result?

A.More people will choose to live in the countryside.

B.It will bring more concern about people s mental health.

C.It will contribute to future urban planning and social policies.

D.People will be helped to improve their mental illness.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Urban Mind measures the level of mental wellbeing.

B.City living may be harmful to people’s mental health.

C.Living in the countryside is better than in the city.

D.Different scientists hold different opinions on the effects of city living.

Scientists are working to stop a deadly virus that infects(感染)pigs. The virus is causing huge losses for farmers in China and other Asian countries. Many farmers have tried to contain African swine flu by quarantining(隔离)pigs and destroying infected animals. But the spread of the disease into East Asia has stepped up the search for other ways to deal with the problem.

The virus had not been considered a major concern for researchers until it appeared in China last year. Chinese farmers raise about half of the world's pigs. Some researchers think the virus might have come from infected animals in Eastern Europe or Russia. Since then, it has spread to China, Vietnam and other Asian countries. Millions of pigs have been destroyed.

Although swine flu does not sicken people, it is very infectious and deadly to pigs. "Today's situation, where you have this global danger, puts a lot more emphasis on this research,” said Doctor Luis Rodriguez. He spoke to The Associated Press. Rodriguez leads the United States government laboratory for foreign animal diseases at Plum Island , New York. As a deadly virus kills pigs across Asia, scientists are accelerating efforts to develop a vaccine (疫苗).

Vaccines often are developed by killing a virus before it is put into an animal. The disabled virus does not make the animal sick, but it activates the body's natural defenses against disease. The immune(免疫的)system is then able to identify the virus and produce antibodies against it.

However, this method is not effective with all viruses including the one that causes African swine flu. For swine flu, scientists have been working on a different kind of vaccine. It is made from a weakened virus, not a dead one. The problem for researchers has been how to change the virus so it can be safely used.

Vietnam's government reported a few weeks ago that it was testing vaccines, but provided few details of its programs. In China, the government said scientists are working on a vaccine that genetically changes the virus. That is similar to a method being used by scientists in the United States.

1.Why did the virus cause the researchers' concern when appearing in China?

A.The virus may infect people.

B.The number of pigs raised in China is huge.

C.The virus may be completely out of control.

D.Chinese science and technology is not advanced.

2.Where might the virus come from?

A.Eastern Europe or Russia. B.Vietnam.

C.African countries. D.America.

3.What is the function of the disabled virus according to Rodriguez?

A.It makes people fall ill.

B.It destroys the immune system of animals.

C.It helps the body produce antibodies against disease.

D.It makes the body's natural defense against disease work.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.The Emphasis of the Virus Research

B.Swine Flu Leads to the Deaths of Lots of Pigs

C.Scientists Hurry to Develop Vaccine for Swine Flu

D.New Results About Government Laboratory for Animal Diseases

The other day on a cold night, I left my wife and drove from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of about 100 miles. It was rather late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient.

At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.

I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.

Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract(契约)we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it we don't go through red lights.

Trust is our first inclination. Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us. The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互的)trust, not distrust. We do what we say we'll do we show up when we say we'll show up and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.

I am so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

When it comes to travelling around Europe, it's important to have a budget in mind. Here are some tips for getting the most out of Germany while saving your money.

Transport

Transport is “the big one” and cycling may be the cheapest alternative among all the modes(方式) of transport.

Tom Bourlet, a Brighton-based travel blogger at Spaghetti Traveller, talked to us about transport in Germany and advised that slower, regional(区域的) trains will be more affordable in comparison to those that are high-speed.

He continued, “If choosing a train journey, buy the ticket several months in advance to get a great offer.”

If you intend to use the Eurostar train, keep in mind that you can save money by buying tickets at least a week in advance. Shopping around can also offer reduced prices. A daily or weekly card for a train or a bus may also be worth investing in. Bourlet continues, “While the trains run like clock-work with high efficiency, the buses run relatively slowly, often arriving late to their destination.”

Ask a travel agent

In an age of technology, we don't always consider going to a travel agent when booking on holiday. If you do, ask them for recommendations, they can give you insider tips. Make sure that they are aware of your set budget before signing up to anything.

Food

Region to region, Germany's cuisine will differ slightly. As a general rule, outside the city centre will be cheaper—the further you go, the less expensive it is. Bear this in mind when setting a daily budget for your meals.

Landmarks

Make sure you book your tickets for the landmarks before your trip as there's likely to be a discount when you do this. You may also want to consider a guided tour which is often free.

Before you go

Make sure you buy currency before you leave. This could prevent you being charged extra for withdrawing money and you're more likely to get a good exchange rate.

1.Which transport is probably the cheapest to travel in Germany?

A.Regional trains. B.High-speed trains.

C.City buses. D.Bicycles.

2.What can we know about the Eurostar train?

A.It runs relatively slowly.

B.The meals on it must be expensive.

C.Travelers can enjoy a discount when shopping around.

D.Booking tickets three days in advance may save your money.

3.In which section of a website may the text appear?

On a Saturday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas, three kids talked and laughed happily as they took turns riding a scooter (滑板车) on their quiet street. 11-year-old TJ Smith had just jumped off the scooter as his neighbors Kim, age 7, claimed her turn, and Julie, 9, looked on. Ten minutes later, Kim sat down on the scooter to catch her breath, That was when a bearded man with a head of messy hair appeared. The kids didn't see where he came from, but they saw exactly what happened next: Without saying a word, the man picked Kim up off the scooter and calmly stepped away.

The guy held Kim gently like a baby and just walked down the street In fact, the calm way the man behaved led TJ to believe that he must be a relative of Kim's. But something wasn't right.“I could see Kim's face," TJ said.“She was scared.

As the man walked on, Kim's fear transformed into weeps, and then she cried for help. She began kicking and moving, trying to get free of the man's control.“What are you doing?" Julie shouted. But the man, undisturbed, just walked the length of the block until he reached an alley(小巷) and disappeared.

TJ was frightened, yet he never thought about the danger to himself. The only thing he wanted to do was to get Kim back. But what was a 4-foot-tall kid going to do to stop a grown man?“I wanted to help_but I couldn't do it myself," he thought to himself. “Tell Kim's parents, Julie!” He shouted as he started running towards the alley.

Kim's parents were relaxing on the sofa in their living room when their front door burst open.

Paragraph 1:“A bad guy just picked Kim up and took her away!”yelled Julie.

Ever since the University of Bologna in Haly was founded in 1088 as the first modern university, most people have associated great universities, with major cities.1.

Colleges and universities in the U.S.,though, have followed a different pattern. To be sure, leading universities such as the University of Chicago and Columbia University in New York City call major urban centers home.2.In some cases, the university is, for all practical

purposes, the whole town.

3. Many early colleges and universities were founded by religious (宗教的) groups that sought to educate students far from the distractions of city life. When Harvard University was founded in 1636 by Congregationalist Church ministers, Cambridge, where the university is now located, was quite separate from Boston. Moreover, when the U.S. began building a network of public universities in the 1860s to bring agricultural and technical research and know-how to the westward- spreading frontier, most were located in small towns. 4.

Given the huge diversity of U.S. higher education, the message for international students shopping for a great university is doubled.5.Don't be put off if you have never heard of the city or town where a school is located. Top-rated colleges and universities located in lesser

known places may amaze you in an unimaginable manner with their high quality and a significant number of their international students.

A.Bloomington is also a great college town.

B.Think the Sorbonne in Paris or Peking University.

C.Set your sights beyond the most well-known schools.

D.One reason: there were no major cities there at the time.

E.There was no better recipe for popularity than small campuses.

F.Part of the explanation for this lies in America's distinctive history.

G.But many are located in cities and towns most people have never heard of.

Over the last 25 years, psychologists have found that personalities center on five basic traits(特性)the Big Five: agreeableness, conscientiousness (责任心), neuroticism, extroversion and openness. Contrary to common belief, people just aren’t organized into certain personality types. Every trait is a continuous dimension and everyone can be described as having varying levels of each trait. A new research has also found animals from ants to apes all have the Big Five and that the universality of personality points to an evolutionary (进化) origin.

Animals and humans have common problems of survival, which are spelled out beautifully in the Big Five, and that’s why there’s so much continuity in human personality and animal personality. For example, conscientiousness involves behaviors like planning and consideration, which are important among animals for taking care of their young, selecting mates and living in groups. Being neat and orderly — aspects of conscientiousness-also has evolutionary superiority. Bees that like to keep clean and remove more dead group members reduce risk of disease, gain more weight and reproduce more Spiders that make tidy webs catch more insects. Birds that build neater and solider nests attract more mates.

These behaviors may seem primitive, but they’re nevertheless indications of personality. Personality is the expression of all of the behaviors that humans and animals exhibit that allow them to function adaptively in the world.

Evolution can also explain why personalities vary so much. Depending on the situation, each of the Big Five can be advantageous. For example, agreeableness is great for relationships. But if a lion were charging at you, you’d be better off with a less agreeable and more aggressive personality. Because the world is so unpredictable, every aspect of each personality trait could be useful at different times, so instead of evolving a single type of personality that’s best for every situation, we’re left with a wide variety.

1.What do people generally think about personality types?

A.Different personality types have respective strengths.

B.Everyone falls into a particular personality type.

C.People with common personality types gather,

D.Everyone has mixed personality types.

2.What’s the purpose of mentioning some animals in Paragraph 2?

A.To illustrate the advantages of being conscientious.

B.To analyze survival chances of cooperative animals.

C.To explain why they are tidy and orderly.

D.To throw new light on their behavior.

3.Why do we display a certain personality in a specific situation?

A.To be free of trouble.

B.To be adaptive to circumstances.

C.To compete for equal rights.

D.To gain advantages over others.

4.What does the text mainly focus on?

A.Personality and behavior.

B.Categories of Big Five.

C.Contradictory facts on personality.

D.Diversity and variability of personality.

The Tokyo Summer Olympics is going green. The 5,000 medals Japan has made are more special than most.

One novel focus of the Tokyo Olympics is to be“sustainable”—to avoid using too many natural resources, so that the games are easy on the environment. As part of this goal, the organizers decided to make all of the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old electronics.

Almost all electronics are made with small amounts of "precious metals", like gold and silver. But collecting enough of these metals to make 5,000 medals was a huge challenge. That's because the amount of metal in each device is tiny. It would take about 20,000 cell phones to get just 1 kilogram of gold.

Beginning in April 2017, the organizers placed collection boxes around the country, and asked people to turn in their old electronic devices. Soon people began to respond to the initiative, turning in smartphones, digital cameras, hand-held games, and laptops. At first, collection went slowly, but soon more and more areas began to take part. By the end, 1,621 local governments had helped out with the collection process.

Then came the job of breaking those devices down into smaller pieces. After being taken apart and sorted, the small electronics were smelted (熔炼) to get all the gold, silver, and bronze elements. This is a tricky job, which calls for careful attention and good skill. It's also dangerous, because some of the metals and other things aren't safe for people to touch or breathe.

By the end of March, 2019, the organizers had hit their targets of getting enough metal for the medals. They had collected around3xkilograms of gold, 4,100 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze. And now all the 5,000 medals are available for the would-be winners.

1.What can we know about the Tokyo Olympics medals?

A.They are hugely valuable.

B.They are of high quality.

C.They are designed uniquely.

D.They are made from e-waste.

2.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?

A.The difficulty of making the medals.

B.The process of collecting old electronics.

C.The initiative to recycle used smartphones.

D.The classification of the collected devices.

3.The underlined word “tricky”in Paragraph 5 means“      ”.

A.creative B.well-paid

C.demanding D.time-consuming

4.What's the purpose of Tokyo's way of making the medals?

A.To advocate sustainable use of resources.

B.To promote the spirit of Olympic Games.

C.To introduce a new technique to make medals.

D.To call people's attention to environmental damage.

The unique ocean animals were discovered by a team of scientists led by Dr. Christine Dudgeon from Australia’s University of Queensland during a 12 year global conservation study.

The newly-found sharks have evolved (进化) to survive in low oxygen environments, enabling them to hunt during low tides. The researchers believe their ability to use their fins () to walk affords the sharks a remarkable edge over the smaller animals they try to hunt. “While they are super hunters in their shallow habitat, the tiny sharks present no threat to people,” says Dudgeon. “At less than a meter long on average, they’re incredibly cute little animals that do not look like sharks at all,” she adds.

A DNA analysis of skin samples from the live fish suggests that walking sharks broke away from their original population and became a distinct species about nine million years ago. Though that may appear to be a long time ago, it is relatively recent given that sharks have been around for more than 400 million years. In fact, Dudgeon and her team believe walking sharks are the youngest kind of sharks on Earth!

The researchers say that the sharks’ small numbers and small habitat make them extremely vulnerable (易受伤害) to natural disasters and overfishing. They are currently on the Nature Red List, which lists species at risk. Dudgeon and her team believe sensible conservation management plans are urgently needed to protect the walking sharks and other endangered animals from further threats.

1.What is the most noticeable feature of the newly-found sharks?

A.They are cute and harmless to humans.

B.They can survive in their shallow habitat.

C.They walk on their fins across the seafloor.

D.They are the youngest kind of sharks on Earth.

2.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The evolution of the shark.

B.The behavior of the sharks.

C.The population of the sharks.

D.The DNA samples of the sharks.

3.What should be done without delay according to Dudgeon and her team?

A.Adjusting the methods of fishing.

B.Putting the sharks on the Nature Red List.

C.Changing the sharks’ living environments.

D.Adopting necessary measures to protect the sharks.

4.In which column of a website can we read the text?

A.Environment. B.Nature.

C.Education. D.Geography.

A lady placed her clock at the bed, and every day she found herself awaking by a long sound. She arose at once, and felt better all day for her early rising. This lasted for weeks. The alarm clock faithfully do its duty. But, after the time, the lady grew tired of it. When she heard its sound, she merely turned over in bed, and was slept again. The clock spoke just loudly as ever; but she did not hear it.

So it is of conscience. If we will obey its voice, even in the tiny things, we can always hear it, clearly and strong. But if we allow us to do that may not be quite right, we shall grow more and more sleepy, until the voice of conscience has no longer powers to wake us.

By now it’s almost common knowledge that spending time in nature is good for you. Areas with 1.(many) trees tend to be less polluted, so spending time there allows you to breathe easier. Spending time outdoors contributes to good health, with blood pressure and stress 2.(reduce), and seems to motivate people 3.(exercise) more.

A survey showed that people 4.spend 2 hours in nature — either all at once or totaled over several shorter 5.(visit) — were more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those with no nature 6.(expose). Remarkably, the researchers found that less than two hours offered no significant benefits. The two-hour benchmark (临界值) 7.(apply) to men and women, to older and younger folks and so on. Even people8.long-term illnesses or disabilities benefited from time 9.(spend) in nature — as long as it was at least 120 minutes per week.

While the findings are based on 10.tremendous number of people, scientists caution that it’s really just a correlation. Nobody knows why or how nature has this benefit or even if the findings will stand up to stricter investigation.
