Over the past few months, COVID-19 has caused great uncertainty around the world affecting people's lives in all aspects.Education is also greatly affected. With students all turning to online instruction, live-streamed classes have become popular among schools and universities.  1.

In China, the use of e-learning is unusual not only in size but also in depth. 2. For another, it proves how modern technology changes the way students are educated and encourages further research and development of educational technology to introduce virtual communities between students and teachers.

In fact, online instruction as an alternative teaching mode has been expanding rapidly in recent years. Many Chinese start-ups focus on AI applications in online courses, and various online educational platforms are set up.3. The online education platform MOOC,where a wide variety of courses is available, has attracted the world's top universities to upload and share resources with students around the world.

Compared with formal instruction, online courses save abundant costs and create a flexible teaching mode(模式)-homeschooling,especially during a crisis. 4.For example, rural students with no access to the Internet and television might be left behind in this new mode. When e-learning becomes the only solution for delivering knowledge, the existing divide could be widened, further deepening education inequality. Also, the quality of teaching becomes heavily dependent on uncertain factors, such as a stable connection to the Internet and technical skills.

5.Yet,the pandemic(流行病)has undoubtedly affected the teaching style in a sweeping manner and given educators around the world plenty of time and space to think about the alternative educational modes.

A.However, online teaching has its own disadvantages.

B.The traditional face-to-face teaching style has been challenged.

C.Chinese colleges and universities started the spring term online.

D.Moreover, online education is fairly acceptable to college education.

E.Online teaching provides a chance to reconsider the current education system.

F.For one thing, the impressive practice sets a good example to other countries.

G.So,it's early to predict how the future of the education system will look like.

Record fires sweeping across the Amazon recently have been making the headlines as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen climate change crisis and endanger biodiversity(生物多样性)。

As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called"the lungs of the world”. It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million local people. The vast area of rainforest plays an important role in the world's ecosystem because it absorbs heat instead of reflecting heat back into the atmosphere. It also stores carbon dioxide and produces oxygen, ensuring that less carbon is released, reducing the effects of climate change.

Any forest destroyed is a danger to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity," Thomas Lovejoy, an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic."The great danger is that a lot of carbon goes into the atmosphere,"he stressed."In the midst of the global climate crisis, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,"UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.

Data from the National Institute for Space Research(INPE)show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August a year ago.A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first 8 months of 2019,up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018,INPE said.We estimate that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have decreased something between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months," Carlos Nobre, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose degradation(恶化)could have severe consequences for global climate and rainfall. The extent of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has gone beyond Brazil's borders.

1.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The great role of the Amazon rainforest.

B.The effects of consistent climate change.

C.The causes of the decreasing biodiversity.

D.The results of the Amazon rainforest fires.

2.Why does the author mention the figures in the fourth paragraph?

A.To explain the process of the research.

B.To present the bad influence of forest fires.

C.To prove the great importance of the rainforest.

D.To show the emergency of protecting the rainforest.

3.What does the author want to tell us in the passage?

A.The dry weather leads to the rainforest fires.

B.The biodiversity makes the rainforest unique.

C.The rainforest fires result in serious consequences.

D.The global climate crisis brings more rainforest fires.

4.Which section of a magazine might this passage probably be taken from?

A.Climate and life.

B.Nature and geography.

C.Humankind and society.

D.Science and technology.

Almost everyone has heard the expression “the calm before the storm”. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.

British sailors created the phrase in the late 1600s. They noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static and the winds would drop. But why is it often so calm before a storm?

Science has given us the answer. According to US website How Stuff Works, a calm period occurs because many storms, such as hurricanes and tornadoes (龙卷风), draw in all the warm and damp air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”.

Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm, dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes “the eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong winds moving in a circle.

The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First, count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder. Roughly 3 seconds equal 1 kilometer. So, for example, if you count 9 seconds, the storm is about 3 kilometers away. A good judgement is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.

However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms break after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and cold winds.

So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable and sensible way to predict the next display of nature’s temper.

3.If there’re 15 seconds between a flash of lightning and a thunder clap, how far is the storm away?

A.About 3 kilometers.

B.About 5 kilometers.

C.About 9 kilometers.

D.About 15 kilometers.

4.What can be learned from the passage?

A.Storms don’t always blow up after calm.

I’m now living in the south of France with my husband Keith and three small children, and I feel like a fish out of water everywhere but one place — the Saturday street market. It’s been operating in our small town of Sommieres since the 13th century, but we’ve only lived here for three months.

From Monday to Friday, life is all about the kids. I’m busy helping my children deal with life in a French school. It’s not easy, and their stress is the whole family’s stress, as Keith and I are occupied with the daily school runs, piles of homework and school notes in French.

But on Saturday, the market is for me. I feel so peaceful as I walk along the quiet street toward the busy town square. The knife-sharpening man is there, operating a machine that looks like it dates from the Industrial Revolution. There’re street musicians with guitars and microphones, and the sound of beautiful songs fills the air. And the food, of course, is delicious. The cheese man doesn’t speak — he just points and cuts, offering a piece from his knife. Lines come out of the door for fresh bread at the bakery. Organic vegetables, herbs and desserts are a feast for the eyes, before being put into the bag to be enjoyed later for lunch. The noises and smells of the market are unfamiliar and thrilling, but their procedures are clear to me. This is part of why I love the place so much: Unlike during the week, when I’m constantly faced with my own difficulties, I know how this place works. My terrible French isn’t the barrier to communication that it is in other circumstances.

At school and in the village, I can’t joke or join a conversation, and although the other parents at the school are kind, I’m an outsider. But at the market, I’m just another customer with a basket. Surrounded by day trippers, I feel like a local — greeting people I know and petting dogs.

My Saturday experiences allow me to hope that in the near future I’ll feel equally confident in my everyday life. Until then, Saturdays prepare me for the coming week of school runs.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010.We were in financial trouble,so she said politely,"Sorry, son, but we can't now.”

I googled the measurements for a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk.I would click notes on an online keyboard and"play"them back on my paper one-keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head.I spent 6 months playing without touching a real piano.Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.

I still remember the first one.I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was.I sat my Grade 1 after 8 lessons.Once I started secondary school,we couldn't afford lessons again.I passed Grade 3,and then Grade 5,practicing only on my piece of paper. One evening, when I was about 13,my mom said she had a surprise for me-it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time that I'd played for her and she was in shock.

My school didn't offer music A-level.I found the Purcell School for young musicians, but the tryouts were difficult. Some of the questions even involved an evaluation of the composer.I was at a loss. But to my amazement,I was offered a place. At Purcell,I spent 2 years working as hard as I could.I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano. When I left Purcell,I was awarded the senior piano prize and academic music prize.I'm now at the Guildhall School in London.I feel proud-it's been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I'm at one of the world's leading music schools.

How to Care for Your Mental Health?

When you’ve been exposed to an infectious illness, it’s important to quarantine (隔离) yourself 1. While you likely don’t need to worry, spending a lot of time in quarantine may have a negative effect on your mental health.

You can participate in enjoyable activities. While you’re in quarantine, try to do things you enjoy, like watching TV or your favorite movies. You might even use this time to catch up on shows you’ve been planning to watch. However, limit yourself to a few hours of TV at a time so you don’t start to feel down. 2. Otherwise, you can have sad feelings or depression.

3. You might have days when you feel like there’s no point in bathing since you are not going out. However, it’s important to maintain good hygiene (卫生), and bathing actually improves your mood. Bathe or shower at least once a day so you’re taking good care of yourself.

4. You probably want to know what’s going on outside your quarantine space, but too much information can add to your stress, especially news about a pandemic (流行病). Set times to check on the news so you don’t get caught in a constant cycle of watching for updates. 5. So you aren’t seeing news updates there.

A.Practicing self care is vital.

B.So you don’t accidentally infect others.

C.It’s best to manage your worries and emotions.

D.Text your friends and family throughout the day.

E.Fortunately, it’s possible to keep these emotions under control.

F.Of course, you should spend time doing other activities as well.

G.Additionally, set time limits for yourself when it comes to using social media.

Over the past decade, drug-resistant diseases have appeared as a major health threat. But where do they develop the drug resistance? One surprising theory: they may have developed the resistance on farms, and not in hospitals.

The crop protection products farmers use to control many plant diseases are almost the same as the drugs doctors use to treat infections, including fungi (真菌). Fungi are continually mutating (变异), and with a life cycle measured in days or weeks, they mutate quickly. When a mutation produces resistance to a chemical-killing fungi, fungi will jump to any host that provides a welcoming environment, such as a human body. And if the treatment for the fungal infection involves a drug similar to the fungicide encountered on the farm, Fungi may develop quickly in the human body-just as they did in the field.

An obvious solution is to use less fungicide in the field. Reducing fungicide use would not only slow the development of the drug resistance, it would help restore diversity to the fungal world. Fungicides are a must in the farming community. Plant diseases pose a major problem for farmers globally-in some crops, disease can reduce harvests by more than 70 percent-and failure to deal with the problem can mean financial ruin.

Just like Fungi-or, indeed, any living thing-plants continually evolve. This is how natural gene editing (基因编辑) works, and without it, we'd all still be single cells in a salty soup. Through natural selection, almost any plant will eventually produce resistance to Fungi. But this can take centuries, so we don't have the time to wait.

On the other hand, advances in genetics have given us an understanding of nature's gene editing process in plants, helping us develop resistance to a disease. Gene editing techniques can then enable us to produce disease resistance-just as nature would do, if given enough time.

1.What can we infer about Fungi from Paragraph 2?

A.They can treat infection sometimes.

B.They don't stop developing new forms.

C.A human body is their favorite place.

D.There are no Fungi in the fields now.

2.Which of the following can replace the underlined word ''pose'' in paragraph 3?

A.Solve. B.Face.

C.Cause. D.Overcome.

3.What makes a plant produce resistance to Fungi?

A.The survival of the fittest.

B.Advances in technology.

C.The use of farm chemicals.

D.A welcoming environment.

Road networks are expanding worldwide at an alarming rate. Although roads can promote economic development and improve human welfare, they can also have severe effects on wildlife populations by worsening habitat and human disturbance. Moreover, traffic disturbance from noise, lights, and motion reduces the quality of habitat near roads.

While roads are now everywhere across much of the earth, the construction of new roads will be concentrated in areas with high biodiversity value. Many of these new roads and highways will likely cross reserves or other highly biodiverse areas. Although roads are one of the most important impacts on global ecosystems, we know little about how patterns in road construction will affect biodiversity in the coming decades.

Here, we use a recently developed global roads data set to investigate the extent and potential influence of road networks across the 1,160,000-km,13-country range of the globally endangered tiger. In the Russian Far East, for example, roads reduce tiger survival rates due to crashes into vehicles. In some regions, tigers avoid areas closer to public roads, suggesting that roads act as important barriers to movement. The emerging impacts of road development on tigers are critical for several reasons.

We calculate road density (), distance to the nearest road, and relative mean species abundance (MSA) to characterize how road networks influence tiger habitats. These systems of measurement provide starting points for range-wide monitoring and impact assessments of road development projects, thus enabling evaluation of progress toward country-level conservation and sustainable (可持续的) development goals.

It was raining light when I got up yesterday. After a quick breakfast, I took a umbrella with me and went to school in a hurry. It was fifteen minutes after school began. I was running quickly when I see an old man walking slowly in the rain. I stopped, wondered whether to help him or not, as I might be late for school. Then I made a decision walk him home. About ten minutes late, we arrived at his house. He thanked for me again and again. I smiled and said it was nothing. I was late when I got to school. Hearing my story, the head teacher, that was giving his lecture, praised me before all the student.

Are you looking for a new pastime that will create a balance between physical activity and relaxation? Then yoga may be the perfect choice for you. Yoga can be practiced by people of all ages and levels of fitness.1. It's a great way to strengthen your muscles and become more flexible.

In the 1930s, Indian Sri Tirumali and K. Pattabhi developed one of the most popular forms of yoga practised worldwide today. They worked together using an ancient Sansknt text called Yoga Korunta to create a set routine of yoga movements and breathing exercises. 2.

Ashtanga is different from other forms of yoga. It is a very powerful form of aerobic (有氧的)exercise which creates deep heat in the body. 3. In other forms of yoga, however, the routine can change each time and the stretching exercises aren't aerobic.

4.As well as making you stronger and more flexible, it can also help you to stay calm. By focusing on your breathing while doing physical exercise, you are able to get a balance between mind and body. In addition, yoga helps to make us healthier so we are less likely to get common illnesses like colds.

Furthermore, yoga encourages you to think about what you're doing. Often you will close your eyes while doing certain movements.5.After a few lessons you'll stop looking at what the others around you are doing. You will stop comparing yourself and start focusing on yourself.

A.It can also be done anywhere at any time.

B.The result of their co-operation was ashtanga yoga.

C.Whatever kind of yoga you choose, there are many long-term benefits.

D.This allows you to concentrate better and it makes you less competitive.

E.Every time someone practices ashtanga, he or she does exactly the same movements.

F.If you're interested in yoga, but can find a class near you, then it might be   an excuse to travel.

G.Recently, it has become extremely common for beginners as well as advanced yoga students to go on yoga holidays.

The world's first hydrogen-powered trains have begun running in Germany. They began carrying passengers Monday in Germany's northern Lower Saxony state. The new train will run 100-kilometer trips and can travel up to 140 kilometers an hour.

A French railroad company called Alstom built the two trains. Team in Germany and France cooperated on the project, which was supported by the German government. The new train model ,called the Coradia ilint, signals the beginning of efforts in Germany and other nations to move away from pollution-producing diesel(柴油) trains.

The Coradia iLint is designed to run on non-electrified train lines with low levels of noise.

It uses a process that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electrical power. If the system produces more energy than the train needs at that time, it can store the extra energy in batteries. The only emissions (排放物) are water and steam.

A single tank of hydrogen can run a Coradia iLint train for about 1,000 kilometers. This is very similar to the distance a diesel-powered train can run on with a single tank.

Hydrogen-powered trains cost more than diesel trains to build. But Alstom officials say the operating costs are much lower. The company plans to provide another 14 Coradia iLint trains to Lower Saxony by 2021.

The head of railroad operations in the area, Carmen Schwab, praised replacing diesel trains with hydrogen. She said the move was an important first step in using clean-burning technologies to reach climate protection goals.

Officials say the area's many wind turbines (涡轮机)will produce part of the energy to create the hydrogen to power the trains.

Alstom says several other European countries have also expressed interest in developing hydrogen train systems. France has already said it wants its first hydrogen train to be operating by 2022.

1.Why did Germany build the new trains?

A. To replace diesel trains.

B. To carry more passengers.

C. To make traveling much easier.

D. To develop friendship with France.

2.What is one advantage of the Coradia iLint?

A. It runs without making any noise.

B. It doesn't use electrical power.

C. It costs much less to run.

D. It is cheaper to make it.

3.It can be concluded that hydrogen trains________.

A. are widely used

B. are environmentally friendly

C. can stop air pollution

D. can produce water and oxygen

4.What might be the best title for the text?

A. Saving Natural Resources

B. Efforts to Reduce Emissions

C. World's First Hydrogen Trains

Organic food is very popular. It is also expensive. Some organic food costs twice as much as non-organic food, but new parents and pet owners are willing to pay up to 200% more for organic food. However, there are people who think it is a waste of money.

There is one main difference between organic and non-organic food. Organic farms do not use agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides. In many countries organic foods have special labels. These guarantee that the products are natural.

Some people think organic means locally grown. Originally this was true. Over time organic farming became more difficult. The demand for organic food grew larger than the supply. Small companies had to sell out to large companies. There weren't enough organic ingredients, such as grain and cattle. This made it difficult for many organic companies to stay in business. Today, many large companies have an organic line of products.

Is organic food more nutritious? This is part of the debate. Many farmers and consumers believe it is. They think agricultural chemicals cause health problems such as cancer. Many health professionals disagree. Few studies prove that organic foods prevent health problems. Health specialists worry more about bacteria, such as E.coli and salmonella. These can get into contact with organic and non- organic food. Doctors recommend washing produce very carefully. Handling meat carefully is important too.

Most people agree that naturally grown food tastes better. Is tastier food worth the extra money? This is a matter of opinion. Whether it is healthier or not may require more research. However, organic consumers argue it is better to be safe than sorry.

1.What is probably the major concern of organic food consumers?

A.Price. B.Safety.

C.Freshness. D.Variety.

2.What is the doctors’ suggestion?

A.Grow your own food. B.Reduce the use of pesticides.

C.Make sure the food is clean. D.Buy large companies’ products.

3.Which of the following do most people agree on organic food?

A.It tastes better. B.It is easier to grow.

C.It contains more fat. D.It is more nutritious.

4.Where does this text probably come from?

A.A recipe book. B.A chemistry paper.

C.A medical report. D.A health magazine.

I watched my Dad close the door. It was a really cold night in dead silence and I was all alone at home. My parents left because they had been running fever for several days and they were showing other symptoms of COVID-19. It was the 9th day of Wuhan lockdown starting on January 23.

The virus we now know as COVID-19 is somehow fearsome partly because it does not discriminate (区别对待) in choosing who it infects. But that is only partly true. All the evidence suggest that it can be merciless to older people, so I was wondering whether my parents would make it and whether we would ever take family photos, which my parents and I had talked about during the Spring Festival holiday..

On their second day away my parents called and asked me how I was. We talked using FaceTime, and the moment I saw mom lying there with an oxygen mask and my dad could not talk without breathing heavily, I realized that I had to live on my own.

But two weeks later, I came across a fever and had to go into quarantine (隔离) and be put under medical observations for 14 days. Fortunately, my illness turned out to be due to a bacterial infections but not COVID-19.

Everything there was hectic, there seemed to be a shortage of medical staff and materials were in short supply. Even though the doctors and nurses were covered from head to toe, I could see how tired they were when I looked into their bloodshot eyes.

They would work a whole day preparing for new patients and seemed incredibly apologetic for not having everything that was needed. Most of the patients were really understanding, but of course there were those who were not, and complained loudly, but all the doctors and nurses tried their best to deal with it in a calming way. And they are all from other cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou, and some of them are just three or four years older than me.

When the quarantine was over, every patient effusively thanked the workers for what they had done, but the answer they received was exactly the same: “That’s what we’re here for.”

1.When did the author’s parents leave her for the hospital?

A.January 23. B.January 30.

C.January 31. D.February 1.

2.What does the underlined phrase “make it” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Succeed. B.Join in.

C.Arrive. D.Survive.

3.What can we learn according to the passage?

A.Both the author and her parents got infected with COVID-19.

B.The majority of the patients understood the doctors and nurses.

C.The patients apologized to the doctors and nurses because they were too tired.

D.The author didn’t get infected with COVID-19 because the virus can only infect the older.

4.What may the author think of the medical workers according to the passage?

A.Admirable. B.Outgoing.

C.Impatient. D.Thankful.

If you're looking to fully experience Africa's breathtaking scenery, and have an eye for adventure, then there's only one place to be. Here, inside Africa picks four of the best hikes from across the continent.

1.Kilimanjaro

Make it to the top of Tanzania's 5,895-meter Kilimanjaro, and you'll be standing at Africa's highest point. The mountain is Africa's most-visited hiking destination, attracting tens of thousands of tourists and adventures every year.

You don't have to a technical climber to climb Mount Kilimanjaro; you just need not be pretty physically fit. There are six routes to choose from difficulty, scenery and success. No special equipment

After school today, I took a walk in the park, depressing and down. I have made considerable efforts win the talent contest, but I only finished fourth. Just when I was crying, a boy in glasses walked by. He noticed me and came over. He played me a piece of Beethoven’s symphony with his mobile phone. Beside, he said Beethoven wrote it as his hearing grew worse. Hearing his word, I was no longer in tears. I came to realize that if we put all our efforts into that we loved, we could create great things no matter what obstacles were in the front of us. I was true thankful for their encouragement.
