Ode to Joy(《欢乐颂》)a 42-episodes TV series, is about five young women living on the 22nd floor of Shanghai’s “Ode to Joy” high-rise community. They become friends while pursuing love and career advancement. Since its appearance on April 18, Ode to Joy has been praised for its realistic description of the hidden struggles of city life. “The audience can relate to the characters since their experiences can be traced back to real life too” commented the Dahe Daily. “Even better, female audiences can find themselves in one or two of the characters because the characters embody feminine archetypes (原型)found throughout the society.”But the idea of following a group of women as they lead a city life is hardly a pioneering concept. In many ways, Ode to Joy resembles American TV series like Sex and the City (1998-2004) and Desperate Housewives (2004-2012). These two series were praised for their feminist themes, but they also employed well-known female archetypes to illustrate the range of dilemmas women face. Deborah A. Macey, a communications professor at Saint Louis University in the US, divides these archetypes up into four ways: the iron maiden, the sex object, the childand the mother. “The iron maiden is portrayed as masculine and career-oriented. The sex object owns her sexuality and genuinely loves her body. The child archetype is naive, optimistic, and dim-witted. The mother archetype connects the characters in the series and serves as the dominant storyteller,” Macey said on the online media forum “In Media Res”.

Sounds familiar? Yes, these features can be seen in the characters of Ode toJoy. Andy (Liu Tao), for instance, partly embodies the iron maiden role. She's super smart, rational and direct. She moves from the US to Shanghai and takes the position of CFO at a top Chinese company. Fan Shengmei (Jiang Xin) can be seen as the “mother” in the series. Despite the fact that she s in charge of her own family issuesshe takes her friends under her wing and stands up for them. Qu Xiaoxiao (Wang ziwen), the sexy and beautiful girl born with silver spoon, perfectly illustrates what is bitter-sweet relationship between friends and lovers. With that being said. Ode to Joy doesn't lack creativity. It assigns the “child” role to two characters-the straightforward, naive Qiu Yingying (Yang Zi), and the good-tempered, hard-working Guan Ju'er (Qiao Xin).

But this category of TV series has its risks. Having five main characters means the drama isn’t story-driven but character-driven. “It’s not something you often see in Chinese TV dramas” Yuan Zidan, Ode to Joy’s screenwriter, told Changjiang Daily. “But we want to challenge the norms.”

C.mother D.sex object

3.What does the underlined word “embody” mean in Paragraph 1?

A.illustrate B.classify C.indicate D.recognize

C.The characters in Ode to Joy arc the same with those in Sex and Cify and Desperate Housewives.

D.Andy fully illustrates the iron maiden who is both masculine and career-oriented.

This summer, I was part of something that I have carried with me every day since. That was an experience that changed my life. The Kentucky YMCA has a program called Y-Corps, which are service trips of around 20 students. This summer, two trips were made across Kentucky, one down south and another trip up north.

I was on the Y-Corps service to the North in the Indianapolis, Indiana, and our trip began at the end of July. I had butterflies flying around me as my parents drove me to Louisville, where the Service to the North team would set off on a nine-day journey in a school bus. I knew some of the team members from previous Y-Conferences, but there were many that I had never met, and I had never participated in a service trip like this before. Thought I was nervous, I was also ready to try something completely out of my comfort zone. Once we loaded the bus with our lightly packed suitcases and sleeping bags, we said our goodbyes to our parents and departed for an adventure that changed all of our lives.

With the Kentucky Y’s motto: “Participate, don’t anticipate, we had no idea where we headed. Road signs were our only clue of where we would be stopping. We did service work at a Middle Way House in Indiana, a Detroit Market Garden, a Pennsylvania YMCA for an invasive species clean-up, the Upper Main Line Y in Pennsylvania to spend time with children at a summer camp, a Hurricane Sandy clean-up in Jersey Shore and the National Mall in Washington D.C. We slept on floors of local YMCAs that would take us in for a night, and some nights we didn’t have the opportunity to shower. We had late nights on the road driving from city to city, and early mornings to start the day journaling and reflecting on the day before.

Though we were physically exhausted from the hard work, we still enjoyed the time to experience the culture of the areas we were in.

1.For the author the Service Trip to the North is    .

A.meaningful B.expensive C.valueless D.fruitless

2.The Service Trip to the North started off from .

A.Kentucky B.Indiana C.Louisville D.Indianapolis

3.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A.The team members carried a lot of luggage on the trip.

B.The members in the team were all familiar to the author.

C.The author had taken part in such kind of service before this one.

D.The author was nervous but willing to face something uncomfortable.

4.We can infer from the last two paragraphs that    .

A.they were physically exhausted and didn’t enjoy the hard work

B.they didn’t know where to go without road signs

C.their trip was packed with hard work and cultural experiences

D.they didn’t have enough water for a bath at night

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

1.What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?

A.They are often forgotten by their owners. B.They are used to living outdoors.

C.They build their own shelters. D.They like to stay in warm places.

2.Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?

A.To know when to bring them inside. B.To keep them from eating bad food.

C.To help them find shelters. D.To keep them company.

3.If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may      .

A.be short of clean water B.dig deep holes for fun

C.dirty the snow nearby D.get lost in the wild

4.What is the purpose of this text?

A.To solve a problem. B.To give practical advice.

C.To tell an interesting story. D.To present a research result.

A film festival is an event at which multiple (多种多样的) films are screened for participants. Typically, film festivals are accompanied by panels (陪审团) which may consist of directors, cast members, and other film personnel, and awards may be offered at the close of the festival to films of particularly high quality. Numerous regions of the world hold film festivals every year. 1..

The first official film festival appears to have taken place in Venice in 1932, when the medium of film was starting to explode in popularity. 2.. Many started focusing on specific categories within the field of film, such as Independent films, documentaries, animation (动画片), or gay and lesbian films. 3.. That explains why movies have advertisement copy (广告宣传文案) like "Screened at Sundance Film Festival"!

In many cases, a film festival includes multiple venues, allowing participants to pick from several films at once. 4. This information typically includes showing times and details about panels and discussions. Participants may pay a flat fee for admission. Or they may be asked to pay a fee for each screening.

5.. Depending on the festival, the festival may hold an open call for submissions, or filmmakers may be invited to participate. A panel reviews any proposed films, determining which will be shown. If the film festival offers awards, the panel may make award nominations (提名) at this time as well. Filmmakers may be required to pay a fee to submit their work.

A.So take advantage of this chance

B.Getting a film into a film festival is challenging

C.It is also a unique opportunity to meet famous people

D.After the Venice Festival, numerous other cities took up the trend

E.Depending on the festival, just getting a screening can be an honor

F.They range from the famous Berlin Film Festival to smaller regional events

G.Typically, the films to be shown are included in a catalogue having information about them

You know that thrill you get when listening to your favorite music or that exciting feeling down your spine (脊柱) when you hear your favorite melody or rhythm? According to a recent study, it seems the same thing can happen while you are reading, but not with every kind of text. This opens up fascinating questions around how music, reading and emotions are connected in the brain.

“We decided we would do a comparison between four or five different kinds of texts to see how the brain responded,” explains Professor Adam Zeman, a neurologist. “The participants lay in an MRI scanner reading the texts, and then we compared brain activity for those five texts.” The texts ranged from deadly boring ones to highly exciting ones, including the Highway Code, passages from novels and poems.

As the researchers observed, participants found some texts more emotional than others. When they read these emotional texts, there was higher activity in brain areas associated with pleasure and reward — the same areas related to the thrill we get when we listen to music. As Zeman says, “It was a nice proof that the emotional response to literature and to music has quite a bit in common.”

When the participants were reading poems, the team found there was more activity in a particular group of brain areas called the Default Network. "These areas seem to be associated with things we do with our minds when we are resting, like thinking about what's happened to us recently, thinking about what’s going to happen in the near future, about other people, and that network seems to be more strongly associated with poetry than with prose” explains Zeman. The study shows that the different texts activate different areas of our brains when we read.

1.What can we know from the study?

A.People may feel excited when reading poems. B.People aren’t thrilled when listening to music.

C.Music gives participants more pleasure than text. D.Deadly boring texts never excite the brain.

2.What is the purpose of the comparison between different kinds of texts?

A.To thrill the participants. B.To scan the participants’ brain.

C.To check the response of human's brain. D.To teach the participants novels and poems.

3.What happened in the participants’ brains when they were reading?

A.Their brains preferred music.

B.Brain areas related to pleasure became more active.

C.Their emotional response to literature stopped.

D.Their brains were less emotional when reading the emotional text.

4.Where is the text probably from?

A.A science magazine. B.A film review.

C.An advertisement. D.A science fiction.

United States health officials say an estimated 80,000 people died of influenza (流感) and problems resulting from the flu last winter, making it the worst season since 1977. The director for the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the number to The Associated Press. Health experts were expecting the winter of 2017-2018 to be a bad year for flu deaths, but not that.

Doctor William Schaffner is an expert on vaccines,  at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Schaffner noted that 80,000 deaths are nearly twice as much as what health officials once considered a “bad year”.

CDC officials say that between 12,000 and 56,000 Americans die every year from flu-related causes, but they do not have an exact count of how many people die from the flu each year. Influenza is a relatively common disease and not always listed on death records as the official cause of death. While last winter was a bad flu season in the U.S., it was not the worst. The 1918 flu lasted nearly two years. Historians estimate that the disease was to blame for between 500,000 to 700,000 deaths during that period. The exact number is still not known.

One thing that made the 2017-2018 flu season so bad was that the flu virus was strong. Usually the disease kills the very young, the very old or those who are already sick. However, last winter, the flu killed many healthy Americans. Another thing that made the flu season so deadly was that the flu vaccine was not as effective as experts had predicted. Drug makers have made changes to the vaccine. Even though the vaccine did not work well last year, health experts still strongly suggest getting vaccinated.

1.What can we learn about influenza in the first paragraph?

A.The winter of 2017-2018 saw the deadliest flu in history.

B.Effective cures should be found to deal with influenza.

C.Health experts had assumed flu would be severer.

D.More people died of influenza than expected in the winter of 2017-2018.

2.How many deaths did the health officials expect in a bad year?

A.80,000. B.40,000.

C.60,000. D.20,000.

3.Why can't CDC officials give an exact number of deaths from flu?

A.Because flu is always considered as a common disease.

B.Because people usually don't take flu seriously.

C.Because CDC officials are unwilling to count the deaths.

D.Because flu is not always listed on death records.

4.What do experts recommend people to do in the last paragraph?

A.Change the vaccine. B.Avoid using vaccine.

C.Get vaccinated. D.Do research on vaccine.

In my second year of high school, I took my first computer science course, which helped me realize I was interested in software. The idea of creating something from just lines of codes and logic was very fascinating. And I didn't put as much time into music as I used to, thinking practicing the piano was just a waste of time.

A year later, when I got back on the piano, I quickly noticed my musical ear was not as strong as it was before. I could no longer hear the difference between a perfect 4th and a perfect 5th or between a D and D flat. Then I had a firm decision to get my skills to where it used to be. After weeks of practicing, I didn't see much progress. I was extremely discouraged and felt that I would have to accept that I no longer will be able to play as well as I used to.

While watching hundreds of tutorials online on how to code in Swift I came up with an idea. What if I used the knowledge I gained from these tutorials to develop an app that would help train my musical ear. After hours of coding, I developed an app that would play a different series of notes, then the user would have to type in the corresponding notes to what they heard. When I was on the subway or had some extra time I could easily open up the app on my phone and use it to help my musical ear. In about 2 months, I regained the skills I lost.

This experience helped me see something that I never noticed before. Programming gives me a platform to express my ideas; in a similar way, playing the piano gives me a way to express my feelings. When playing through a song for the first time I hear many errors. Similarly, when I run my program for the first time there are usually many mistakes. In both of these cases, it takes patience to go through each measure or line to hear or find the error. I realized when I’m playing the piano I am also practicing my programming skills and vice versa.

1.What happened to the author a year ago?

A.He realized his strength. B.He invented lines of codes.

C.He developed another hobby. D.He was too busy to practice piano.

2.Which of the following can best describe the author?

A.Determined and creative. B.Hard-working and gifted.

C.Easy-going and generous. D.Independent and energetic.

3.What can we infer about the author from the third paragraph?

A.He received musical training online.

B.He improved himself by studying online.

C.He got inspired from the tutorials online.

D.He made good use of the app he downloaded online.

4.What can the author learn from the experience?

A.He came to realize it is important to develop some good qualities.

B.He understood the meaning of the saying “practice makes perfect”.

C.He found programming and playing the piano have something in common.

D.He felt it necessary to improve himself in programming and playing the piano.

Encourage kids to take five or ten minutes at the beginning of each day to read, before doing anything else. They can even set a timer (计时器). It’s always possible that they’ll want to keep going after their time is up.

Match books to activities

Know a child going to soccer camp? Connect him or her with sports stories by authors like Matt Christopher. 2. The Summer of May by Cecilia Galante is a moving story about a girl experiencing her own summer school.

3.

Encourage children to always carry a book with them. It sounds simple, but kids may be surprised to discover all the time during the day they have for reading — on the bus to camp, in a waiting room, or during breaks.

Have family reading time

Just as you set aside time for reading during the school year, ask families to devote 20 minutes a day to book.  4.

Set goals

Some kids will have no problem finishing reading four books in the summer. 5. Meet with kids to determine them.

A.Read for fun

B.Read over breakfast

C.Always carry a book

D.Have a student who’ll be in summer school?

E.Others may need to make sound plans, such as two books a month.

F.Every family member should read during this time, including Mom and Dad.

G.That means three months with books can make a difference in their vocabularies.

My family had always been close and lucky. No one died and no one was sick. We were all living a happy life until my grandfather had cancer. No matter how much I told myself he might not die, somehow I still felt as if it was a death sentence. He fought so hard but died at 63. I honestly didn’t know how I dealt with. I never cried alone. I had the support of my family and teachers. I just remembered my grandfather’s wish that we should celebrate his life.

That’s how we came up with the idea for Hives (蜂房) for Lives — a business my sister and I started where all the profits (赢利) go to the American Cancer Society (ACS). During our first year we donated (捐赠) more than $2,000 to the ACS. The next year a man who belonged to my grandparents’ “bee club” gave his honey to us, and our little business grew. We sold at wine festivals, schools, and to anyone else who would buy! We had my uncle sell in California and my grandmother sell in Chicago. We have sold honey in 13 states — even in Puerto Rico! This year we donated more than $10,000 to the ACS and we’re hoping to do more next year. Hopefully our business will help research into the causes of cancer or just improve the life of someone with cancer.

I feel like Hives for Lives is a way to honor my grandfather. Honor his love, his life, and his strength. With Hives for Lives reminding me of my grandfather every day, I feel as if I can move on in life, that he will always be alive in my heart and memories. It made me deal with his death, because I felt like I had truly honored his wish of celebrating his life.

4.What would be the best title for the text? ______

A.Turning sadness into hope B.The meaning of life

Earlier this year, I removed all Internet services from my home, which was very upsetting at first, but I have lived that way. 1..

I was not content with the time I was wasting—2.. If there is something I want to research on the Internet, I write it down and use that list when I have Internet access. Now I’m forced to leave the house to get the Internet. I’ll go to the office, the library, the coffee shop, or some other places with free public Wi-Fi, and work on what I need to do online.

Now the Internet is a tool I use to improve my life. 3., but I go on the Internet with the intention of doing these things. Whenever I’m on the Internet now, I use it in a deliberate way, a way that benefits me and my life, and a way that adds value.

4.. I could focus on writing without being disturbed. I have more time to read, to write, to think, to exercise and to walk. Because I’ m out of the house and there are people around. I meet new people. Additionally, I have more time for friends and I feel less stressed and my thoughts are clearer. My mind is more focused on important things. 5. Plus, I no longer long for the Internet like I once did.

It will be upsetting at first, but you will live, and your life will be better without it.

A.Here are some of my tips to use the Internet in a more productive way

B.Since I got rid of the Internet at home, I’ve found so many benefits

C.I don’t have a monthly Internet bill

D.I learnt to think independently

E.It ended up being the most productive and wisest decision I’ve ever made

F.I log on to  watch some videos or laugh at funny pictures

G.I felt I could do more purposeful things than spend it on the Internet

By the end of the century, if not sooner, the world’s oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.

At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms (海洋微生物) called phytoplankton. Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface. Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton. Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean’s appearance.

Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean, an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean’s warming trend. Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.

Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a scientist in MIT’s Center for Global Change Science, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 39C, it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic, a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will tum greener.” Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing,” she said, “but the type of phytoplankton is changing.”

And why does that matter? Phytoplankton are the base of the food web. If certain kinds begin to disappear from the ocean, Dutkiewicz said, “it will change the type of fish that will be able to survive.” Those kinds of changes could affect the food chain.

Whatever colour changes the ocean experiences in the coming decades will probably be too gradual and unnoticeable, but they could mean significant changes. “It’ll be a while before we can statistically show that the changes are happening because of climate change,” Dutkiewicz said, “ but the change in the colour of the ocean will be one of the early warning signals that we really have changed our planet.”

1.What directly makes the change of the ocean’s appearance?

A.The increase of phytoplankton.

B.The way light reflects off the organisms.

C.The type and concentration of phytoplankton.

D.The decline of phytoplankton.

2.What does the underlined word “project” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Control. B.Use.

C.Predict. D.Discover.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Phytoplankton are sensitive to the ocean’s warming trend.

B.Phytoplankton absorb carbon dioxide at the bottom of the ocean.

C.Oceans with more phytoplankton may appear bluer

D.Data have been found to show the change in the colour of the ocean

4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To introduce a new method to study phytoplankton.

B.To explain the effect of climate change on oceans.

C.To analyze the consequences of ocean colour changes.

D.To analyze the composition of the ocean food chain.

If you want to convince the boss you deserve a pay rise or promotion, the solution could be simple --- eat the same food as they do. Psychologists have discovered managers are much more likely to instantly trust us if we choose the same dishes as them.

During experiments, discussions over wages and work conditions were much more successful if both sides chose to snack on the same treats. And shoppers were much more likely to buy a product advertised on TV by someone eating a similar food to them at the time.

The reason is thought to be the so–called similarity attraction theory --- where people tend to like others who have similar tastes or habits to themselves. But this is believed to be one of the first studies highlighting the role of food in this relationship. Researchers at Chicago University in the US conducted a series of experiments to examine food’s role in earning trust.

In a test, participants were told to watch TV --- where someone pretending to be a member of the public praised a certain product. The volunteers were given Kit Kat bars to nibble, while the TV people ate either a Kit Kat or grapes as they talked.

The results showed viewers were much more likely to express an interest in buying the product if the TV showed the other person eating a Kit Kat too. The researchers added, “Although similarity in food consumption is not a sign of whether two people will get along, we find consumers treat this as such. They feel more trusting of those who consume as they do. It means people can immediately begin to feel friendship and develop a bond, leading to smoother transactions from the start.”

Harley Street psychologist Dr. Lucy Atcheson said it was already known that wearing similar clothes could instantly create trust. But this was the first report that food had the same effect. She said, “This is really interesting. It makes sense as people feel they have common ground and can trust the other person. That means negotiations are more likely to be successful.”

1.According to the passage, customers are likely to buy a product from a dealer who ______.

A.advertises his products on TV B.has the same taste as them

C.reduces the price of his products D.pays attention to the quality of his products

2.The experiments conducted by researchers at Chicago University show that ______.

A.food plays an important role in earning people’s trust

B.bosses like employees that have the same taste as them

C.people who have similar tastes to their boss’s earn more

D.people have less interest in buying products advertised on TV

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.People who eat similar food are more likely to trust each other.

B.People will get along with each other if they like to eat similar things.

C.The effect of wearing similar clothes hasn’t been proved by researchers.

D.People are more likely to make friends with those wearing the same clothes as them.

4.Which of the following sayings can be an example of the similarity attraction theory?

A.Honesty is the best policy. B.All good things come to an end.

C.Birds of a feather flock together. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

What do you usually do when you have some free time? Do you take part in any form of hobby? If your answer is no, then you should think twice. Experiencing some type of interest or hobby might be the Ideal way to develop your brain an improve your creative thinking.

Here is a common problem that many older people have. They have spent such a great deal of time raising their family that once their children are grown and left home, they all of a sudden start to experience their age. Quite often, it is not their age that is the concern. It is the fact that they are unexpected offered more time on their hands.

When you put in too much time not doing anything, this can affect your brain. This is just where the expressions “If you don’t use it, you lose it” definitely is the truth. Your mind needs working out much like any other muscle in your body. This is why getting a hobby matters. It offers you something to do and is a perfect way to meet new people.

Enjoying a hobby is also a perfect way to improve creative thinking at any age. Even young children can profit from taking a new hobby. For retired people, enjoying a hobby which they can find entertainment in with their grandchildren will help keep them active and feeling young at heart.

Several hobbies that are terrific for both your mind and your body include yoga, biking, swimming and golf. If you aren’t fond of sports, even taking a walk regularly is a wonderful way to keep active. It helps you to appreciate fresh scenery and it has been suggested that the colors green and blue help make you more creative.

As you can see above, you can get pretty much from taking a hobby. With so many choices waiting for you, begin your journey right away!

1.What can be implied about many older people from Paragraph 2?

A.They used to have little free time. B.They concern about their age.

C.They lack creative thinking. D.They should develop their brain.

2.Why does getting a hobby matter according to the text?

A.It improves one’s living conditions. B.It strengthens one’s brain.
