How to Forgive Someone

Forgiving someone who has done something wrong and hurt you can be difficult and painful. 1.  While this is natural, holding on to your anger causes you to become more painful. For this reason, it is necessary to choose to forgive, not for the other person, but for yourself. The following suggestions will help you forgive someone.

Release your anger. Let go of all the negative feelings you have towards the other person. Allow yourself to cry, go into nature, and talk to someone you trust, or do whatever helps you release these bad feelings. 2.

Give it time. Forgiveness does not come easily. 3. It is something that can be realized little by little every day.

4. Once you've had time to cool down and think things through, you may clearly explain to the other person, in a calm manner, how his actions have hurt you and how they have made you feel. This is very important, or you will bottle up feelings of anger towards the other person, making true forgiveness impossible.

Focus on the future. Once you have made the decision to forgive someone, you need to forget the past and focus on the future. 5. It might be just what your relationship needs.

A.Get angry at someone.

B.Tell the other person how you feel.

C.Your first reaction is probably to hold on to your anger.

D.It requires self-control, determination and, above all, time.

E.Look on the bright side of the future and make a fresh start.

F.If not, the bad feelings will cause you to become more painful.

G.It's unnecessary to rebuild a relationship with anyone or let him go.

Vegetarianism is growing in popularity in a lot of countries. And now, South Africa is one of them. Today, more and more South Africans are experimenting with the vegetarian (素食者)way of life by cutting meat out of their diet.

Some others are exploring veganism. Vegans (纯素者)are similar to vegetarians but they avoid all animal-based products, including milk and eggs. Some vegans even do not eat honey. There is no official count of how many vegans there are in South Africa. But the interest has led to the birth of vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Johannesburg, the nation's economic center. And this year, Africa's first big vegan and plant-based festival was held in Cape Town. The Vegan &. Plant Powered Show took place at the end of May.

But veganism can be a lonely road for many South Africans. The country is Africa's top consumer of meat from cows, pigs and sheep, based on information from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Many South Africans express shock at the thought of giving up meat, which is central to celebrations and spirituality.

This is an issue for many African vegans, including Anesu Mbizvo. "In African traditional culture, a big part of a family's worth is their livestock (家畜),which decide the wealth of a family. And so when an African kills an animal at a gathering, it's thought that he would give away his wealth. "  But she adds, "Offering home-grown vegetables would not be considered to be valuable. I think that thought mainly prevents some people of African cultures from being vegans."

Some South Africans are finding their path somewhere in the middle. Thirty-one-year-old Thandiwe Ngubeni is a communications specialist. She still eats meat-but less and less of it as time goes by. "I feel more energetic when I eat a vegan meal. It actually gives me more energy.

1.What can we learn about vegans?

A.They can drink milk.

B.They eat some animal meat.

C.They enjoy opening vegan restaurants.

D.They refuse any product based on animals.

2.What mainly stops some Africans being vegans according to Anesu Mbizvo?

A.Too many animals in the wild. B.Traditional views of livestock.

C.The influence from other countries. D.Not enough vegetables in the restaurant.

3.What do we know about Thandiwe  Ngubeni?

A.She is a vegan.

B.She is an animal specialist.

C.She looks forward to eating much more meat.

D.She has a limit on the amount of meat she eats.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Vegans' Behaviors Are Too Extreme

B.Vegetarians Are Not Popular Any Longer

C.Many South Africans Welcome a Vegan Lifestyle

D.Meat in South Africa Will Become Less Delicious

Many Americans are busy preparing lists of what to give friends or loved ones. This season, people will be able to buy a cargo-carrying(载货)robot that follows them around like a dog. But it is unclear if the robot will be a popular gift.

Large companies like Amazon, FedEx and Ford have already been experimenting with sending delivery robots to homes across the United States. Now an Italian company is offering robots directly to consumers(顾客). The new robot, called "the Gita", weighs about 23 kilograms and costs $ 3,250.

The robot's creators had short trips in mind when they designed it. "The Gita" is a "hands-free carrier" that can hold fruits, vegetables and other things as it follows its owner down the street. "The Gita" does not require use of a telephoneit also does not use GPS technology or facial recognition.

Whether the robot will be a success is not yet clear. Tech experts say "the Gita" may fail. They hope the company finds more purposes to contribute to its success. Examples include carrying tools around hospitals, factory floors or places where products are stored. The robots can carry up to 9 kilograms. So far, the best places to find the company's six-wheeled robot are US collegesThe University of Houston and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Sadie Garcia is a student at the University of Houston. "I love them. I think they're so cute," she said, as one of the machines arrived carrying a sandwich for her in the dining hall. Garcia said she was so cold that she did not want to leave her room. Starship co-founder Ahti Heinla said his company once thought about selling the machines directly to consumers. But the business dropped the idea after discovering it would have to sell them for more than $ 3,000 each.

A.Fight with other robots. B.Buy things for its owner.

C.Carry things for its owner. D.Help college students do homework.

I have been receiving so much kindness. It was difficult for an independent girl like me to accept it at first. At times, my financial situation is not the best. But with that comes a great lesson in appreciation, budgeting, and deciding what is and what isn't important.

A few times I've had to put off or even give up things. Because of my scarcity on money, I had to give up a keep-fit exercise, which is something I like to treat myself regularly. When my coach Lisa heard about this, she offered me training at a highly discounted price. At first this made me very uncomfortable. I feared that she would wrongly think that I was going to bargain and of course I wasn't. Instead, I was just being honest about my situation— being short of money. I finally accepted her offer, remembering that I deserve kindness, too.

Another time, I noticed a friend of mine selling his old exercise bike, which was perfect for me, as I was looking to replace my broken one. I told him that I would take it when I had the money, but then life got in the way. When I finally got the time to pick it up, I realized my financial shortcomings again. I asked him if he could hold onto it for one more week, as then I'd have the funds again. He was happy to do this, but instead he insisted on offering me the bike as a gift. Another opportunity presents itself to teach me how to receive with dignity.

I continue to slowly learn how to accept the kindness from others. In fact, the relationship between giving and receiving is closely linked. When you accept the kindness from others with joy, they will feel happy, too.

1.How did the author feel at first when she received kindness from others?

A.Happy. B.Unfair. C.Proud. D.Unacceptable.

2.What does the underlined word "scarcity" in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Scare. B.Independence. C.Lack. D.Principle.

3.What was the author afraid of when Lisa did her a favor?

A.Being punished. B.Being misunderstood.

C.Accepting her coach's strict training. D.Giving away the secret of her being short of money.

4.How did the author get the second-hand exercise bike?

A.She got it for free. B.She paid much money for it.

C.She bought it from her coach. D.She borrowed it from her friend.

It was late spring when my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over(靠边停车). “What are you doing? "I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasnt the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.

Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?" She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?" She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).“ What?"  She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven't received any in a while.”

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name? “To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. ”

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by(过路人),since we had seen so few along the way.

Paragraph 1:

I let out a sigh while my mum rooted (使……固定)herself against the car worrying about what could be done. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:

As we drove along , a flower shop came into sight on the road.

We all know that exercise is great for you. But let's be honest.1. Here I am going to share my top reasons for working out.

Exercise can completely change your feeling. When you work out, your body produces endorphins(内啡肽).2.You will feel better after a workout than you did before it. Next time you're having a bad day, try going for a fast-paced run or taking a spinning class(单车课 程),and the day won't seem so bad after all.

3. Whenever I move to a new city or work, I look for exercise classes, where you can always meet like-minded people. You can support each other during a difficult workout. And you all share a collective feeling of happiness when the hard class finishes!

Exercise makes you feel confident. We all know the physical effects of exercise on our bodies but we don't always talk about the mental effects.4.This new feeling might even help in your work or social life.

Exercise makes you feel strong and fit. Running 30 minutes every day helps you keep healthy and makes you feel a sense of achievement. It's a great feeling doing something you couldn't do before and knowing it's a result of your hard work.

So, next time you're feeling down, put your trainers on and get sweating. It might not be easy in the beginning for most people. 5.

A.Exercise helps you become sociable.

B.Exercise helps you reduce stress and anxiety.

C.That will give you a rush of happiness.

D.You can get to know each other well and make close friends.

E.But I promise you will feel much better once you've finished.

F.Sometimes finding that motivation to work out can be a little difficult.

G.Exercise might give you belief in yourself from being comfortable with your body and appearance.

Researchers at the University of Scotland have discovered a protein that can influence viruses developing and even can control cancer. Now the fight is on to fully understand how it works in the hope of turning the laboratory research into a treatment.

The protein is called Hira. Technically it is a histone(组蛋白)complex, but it is easier to understand in terms of what it can do. Three years ago Dr Taranjit Singh Rai and colleagues at the Beatson Cancer Institute and Glasgow University reported that Hira could possibly suppress the division of cells that causes cancer. In the course of that research, Dr Rai found out something unusual. In the lab they have established that the Hira protein has a role to play in the anti-viral fight, thus, making it have a fundamental role to play in fighting against cancer.

The trick in using it to fight diseases may lie in increasing Hira levels in our cells. “I think what researchers might be interested in is how we can increase levels of this protein to deal with the viruses better, Dr Rai said.

Dr Rai has led an international study and support has come from Cancer Research UK and the results are published in the journal Nucleic Acids Research. But there is a major concern that the research is still limited to the laboratory.

It is going to take some time, probably years, before this work can move out of the lab and into clinics and hospitals. But the researchers are excited Hira will one day be the basis of a new approach in medicine.

1.What does the underlined word “suppress" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Motivate. B.Monitor. C.Control. D.Improve.

2.What can be known from the text?

A.Hira has been used in the medical treatment.

B.More studies should be done on Hira.

C.The levels of Hira in cells are unchangeable.

D.Hira can bring about side effects.

3.What is the researchers' attitude to the future of Hira?

A.Cautious. B.Optimistic.

C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.

4.What's the text mainly about?

A.A new way to use the protein.

B.A new approach to improving the division of cells.

C.A new medicine that can fight diseases.

D.A protein that can stop viruses developing.

Howard Carter Finds King Tut's Tomb

Howard Carter was only 17 years old when he first went to Egypt in 1891. His father was quite successful as a portrait painter in England. Howard had a great deal of artistic talent, but he did not want to become a portrait painter like his father. He wanted adventure. With his father's help, he got a job with an archaeologist who was on his way to Egypt. This was an exciting opportunity for young Howard Carter.

In Egypt, Howard Carter worked as an artist for some of the best Egyptologists(埃及古 物学者)of his time. An Egyptologist is an archaeologist whose focus is learning about ancient Egypt. It was not long before Howard Carter was quite well known among Egyptologists, not only as an artist but also for his knowledge about ancient Egypt and archaeology.

Howard Carter wanted to hunt for King Tut's tomb, but that took men and money. Howard Carter finally got lucky. Lord Carnarvon was a very rich man. Lord Carnarvon allowed Howard Carter to hire 50 men to help him search for Tut's tomb.

In November 1922, by the light of a candle, Howard Carter cut a hole in a secret door. Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter carefully looked through the hole. What they saw through the peephole(窥视孔)) was amazing! They could not believe their eyes! The room was filled with treasures—couches shaped like animals, jeweled chests, vases, statues, and even chariots(二轮战车),all glittering with gold. It took months to move the treasures they found in the first room alone before they could open the doors in that room that led to other rooms! In other rooms, they found the chair King Tut had used as a small child.

One of my second graders, Debbie, had been unusually quiet in my Family Living class. When I asked her if something was wrong, she replied, “I don't feel like talking today. I'm sad. My best friend's parents are going to get divorced(离婚的). Her father moved out of the house. I told her I would share my dad with her, but I know it isn't the same. ”

I was surprised to learn that almost every child in my primary grade Family Living classes seemed to have some personal acquaintance (了解)with divorce—through friends of the family, neighbors, relatives, or much closer to home—their own parents. For many of them, divorce was just a normal part of life. Emily once said, “I want to be a doctor or nurse when I grow up, so after I get married and divorced, I'll be able to support myself. Then there was Billy, who stated, “When my mom gets married again next week, we're all going on a honeymoon.

Sometimes parents fight about the kids," said Kimberly. “My parents are divorced and my mom keeps pulling on one of my arms and my dad pulls the other. ” How sad, I thought, that a child would feel like her parents were actually pulling her apart because they each wanted more of her than the other should. “I hate that my parents are divorced! exclaimed Greg. “It's all my fault, too. I bite my nails too much. ”

Lori tried to look at things from a more positive perspective. “Your mother and father got mad at each other, but it doesn't mean they got mad at you," said Lori. “Lori is right," I said. Sometimes a husband and wife realize that they no longer love each other and decide it will be best for the whole family if they don't live together anymore. But that doesn't mean they stop loving their children, and it certainly doesn't mean that it is the children's fault!

“Maybe your mom and dad will change their minds and get undevoured,” Eric told Greg. “Then you can all be together again. ” Greg shook his head. “No, that won't happen. ” And then, with a thoughtful expression on his face, he said, “You know something? Divorce is like a cake. You cut it in half and it's separated forever. ”

1.Why did Debbie feel sad?

A.Debbie’s best friend’s parents were going to get divorced.

B.Debbie’s parents were getting divorced.

C.Her father moved out of the house.

D.She didn't want to share her dad with others.

2.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.It's the children's fault that leads to parents' divorce.

B.It's acceptable for parents to get divorced if they don't love each other.

C.Parents usually get mad at the kid when they get mad with each other.

D.Parents usually ignore their children when they plan to get divorced.

SWEET LOVE

Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. 1.. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, one that doctors recommend we all cut down on.

“It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. 2.. Why? “Sugar, we believe, is one of the reasons, if not the major reason,” says Johnson.

Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. 3..

So what is the solution? It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. 4.. From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat. So while the foods appear to be healthier, large amounts of sugar are often added.

5.. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier options, like fruit. Other schools are trying to encourage exercise by building facilities like walking tracks so students and others in the community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.

A.It’s not surprising that a cupcake contains a lot of sugar

B.So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us

C.The trouble is, in today’s world, that it’s extremely difficult to avoid

D.But some people are fighting back against sugar and trying to create a healthier environment

E.One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes

F.If you have high blood pressure, your heart needs to work harder to pump blood around your body

G.When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects the parts of our brain that make us feel good

For over 40 years, gaokao has not only affected individual students, but also has had a significant impact on national development.

In a move to fix talent shortages in the high-end chip, software design, intelligent technology, new materials and advanced manufacturing and social sciences, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced a new college enrollment plan — called the “strengthening basic disciplines plan (强基计划)” — that will start this year.

The pilot plan has been rolled out in the country’s top 36 universities. By May 13, all schools had released their distinctive enrollment plans, encouraging senior high students with special talents to sign up.

Before the end of May, students can apply to one of the 36 participating universities. Enrollment policies vary by university, with admission limits set from dozens of students to 200.

These universities also detailed their recruitment procedure.

After the results of gaokao are released, schools will release lists of qualifying students, who either excel in gaokao, or have won first or second prizes in Olympiads with gaokao scores at least higher than the first round of register lines. These applicants will then receive additional tests and interviews. The final enrollment decision is heavily based on the gaokao score, which will remain the most important criterion (标准), accounting for more than 85 percent of the final result, says MOE.

The universities have announced that they will also consider physical tests as a reference for submission (录取), according to China Youth Daily.

Once the students are enrolled, they are expecting an intensive educational program. For example, Tsinghua University has set up five schools, offering courses in chemical biology, information and computing science, theory and applied mechanics as their dominant disciplines. The university’s goal is to “put admitted students in small, independent classes with the best and most specific teaching resources and learning environments for their discipline”, according to Yu Xiaoxiao, the director of admission at Tsinghua University.

Compared to the previous independent university enrollment scheme (高校自主招生计划), under which some students could either gain admission without taking gaokao or be awarded bonus points in the exam, “the new plan positively facilitates diverse, efficient and scientific progress in Chinese college admissions,” noted China.org.

1.What’s the purpose of the passage?

A.To affect individual students with talents.

B.To inform people of a new education project.

C.To instruct high schools to improve education quality.

D.To help the college-bound high school students with exarms.

2.Which of the following is the function of gaokao according to the passage?

A.It helps students to get admitted to certain programs.

B.It fixes talent shortages in the high technology.

C.It greatly influences national development.

D.It strengthens college enrollment plans.

3.What do we know about the “strengthening basic disciplines plan”?

A.Each applicant can apply to the 36 participating universities.

B.The final enrollment decision has nothing to do with the gaokao score.

C.The applicants will receive additional tests and interviews after gaokao.

D.Each university can admit 200 students with the same enrollment policy.

4.Where is this passage probably taken from?

A.A newspaper. B.A science magazine.

C.A university website. D.A textbook.

One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. Rubbish of all kinds is piling up in landfill and polluting our rivers and oceans. A more recent addition to the list of things we chuck away is e-waste — electronic items that are broken and not recycled. Now solutions are being found to give this stuff a new life.

Many millions of tonnes of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are discarded each year, partly because it’s cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them. A UN report claims the 50 million tonnes of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tonnes by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world.

However, there’s a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many founded around the world. One of its volunteers, Francesco Calo, said that “this project allows you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault.”

As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another idea is e-waste mining. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting (提取) these materials from electronic gadgets. It’s thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional mining. With phones typically containing as many as 60 element, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.

These projects make total sense — collections of e-waste for recycling are “stagnating (停滞不前) or even decreasing” according to Ruediger Kuehr, of the United Nations University And in countries where there is no legislation, much of it just gets dumped. However, the European Union, for example, is trying to tackle the problem by insisting manufacturers have to make appliances longer-lasting and will have to supply spare parts for machines for up to 10 years.

1.According to the passage, electronic items are thrown away because ________.

A.they are totally useless

B.we have to recycle them

C.they will pollute our rivers and oceans

D.it’s cheaper to replace them than fix them

2.What is leading to the rise in e-waste?

A.Growing trend for repair events.

B.E-waste generating cleaner energy.

C.Our being hungry for new technology.

D.Mining valuable metals in electrical items.

3.What do we know about e-waste?

A.E-waste used to be the fastest growing waste stream in the world.

B.Tremendous amounts of e-waste are thrown away each year.

C.We can’t find the solution to the problem of c-waste.

D.Land-filling allows us to reduce e-waste.

4.Which is the best title for the passage?

A.Solving the Problem of E-waste

B.How to Stop Damaging Our Planet

C.Saying No to Throwing Away Things

D.How to Collect E-waste for Recycling

A few days before Christmas, the crowded shopping downtown was starting to annoy us. Most of us were loaded down with packages, and it looked like many of us were beginning to wonder if all those countless friends and relatives actually deserved so many gifts. This was not the Christmas spirit I’d been raised with.

When I finally got on a jammed streetcar, the idea of standing there packed like a sardine the whole way home was almost more than I could take. Suddenly I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A small, dark-skinned boy pulled a woman’s sleeve and asked, “Would you like a seat?” He quietly led her to the closest free seat he could find. Then he set out to find another tired person. As soon as each rare new seat became unoccupied, he would quickly move through the crowd in search of another burdened woman.

When I finally felt the pull at my own sleeve, I was absolutely struck by the beauty in this little boy’s eyes. He took my hand, saying, “Come with me, ma’am.” As I happily settled down, the little angel of love immediately turned to help his next subject.

The people on the streetcar, as usual, had been deliberately avoiding each other’s eyes, but now they began to exchange shy glances and smiles. That little boy had obviously changed something—we all relaxed into a feeling of warmth and actually enjoyed the trip.

I didn’t notice when the child got off. When I reached my stop I practically floated of that streetcar, admiring the sparkling Christmas lights on my street in a fresh, new way. Or maybe I was seeing them in an old way, with the same wonder I felt when I was five or six. Anyway, it is the little child that shall lead the ways for me.

1.What can we infer from the underlined part in Paragraph 1?

A.The gifts were too heavy to carry home.

B.Friends and relatives always deserve gifts.

D.The author was fed up with buying Christmas gifts.

2.How did the author feel when she got on the streetcar?

A.Uncomfortable. B.Warm.

C.Astonished. D.Excited.

3.Why did the author see the boy as the little angel of love?

A.Because he was dark-skinned. B.Because he occupied free seats.

C.Because he helped tired persons. D.Because he took her hand gently.

4.What changes did the boy bring to the people on the streetcar?

A.They got to know one another.

B.They admired the boy when he got off.

C.They became more friendly to each other.

D.They changed the lights on the old streets.
