Global warming does more than just kill plant species-it also changes the way plants grow. Researchers at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) joined forces with the Leibniz Institute for Plant Biochemistry (IPB) to discover the molecular processes of plant growth. In Current Biology, a scientific journal, they presented their findings on high-temperature plant growth. This could lead to developing plants that can survive global warming.

Plants react to even small temperature changes, but they are unable to move to new locations. “When temperatures rise, plants grow taller... to cool themselves off. Their stalks become taller, and their leaves become narrower and grow farther apart. Yet, this makes the plant more unstable overall,” explains Professor Marcel Quint, an agricultural scientist at MLU. Unstable plants bend faster in the rain and produce less food that’s also less nutritious.

There’s still lots to learn about plant reactions to temperatures. “We are just starting to understand how plants detect the changes in temperature...,” Quint says. Earlier studies have shown that the protein PIF4 directly controls plant growth and is also dependent on temperature. When it’s cold, PIF4 is less active, meaning the plant doesn’t grow. At higher temperatures, PIF4 activates growth-promoting genes, and the plant grows taller. This is new information, says Quint.

To understand it, they investigated the growth of thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana,) seedlings. Normally, its seedlings form short stems at 20. These stems become considerably longer at 28. They discovered a hormone  that activates the PIF4 at high temperatures, thus producing the protein. The findings of the Halle group may help to breed plants that remain stable even at high temperatures and produce many crops.

1.Why did the researchers at MLU and IPB conduct their research?

A.To study the negative effects of global warming.

B.To find out how plants help reduce global warming.

C.To observe how global warming affects plant growth.

D.To understand the ways that plants cause global warming.

2.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A.Low temperatures have little impact on plants.

B.Plants prefer dry weather to rainy weather.

C.Plants are very sensitive to changes in soil.

D.High temperatures decrease crop production.

3.What do we know about PIF4?

A.It mainly exists in the cress seedlings.

B.It works differently at different temperatures.

C.It is a kind of gene that controls plant growth.

D.It is a plant hormone that works at high temperatures.

4.Who will probably benefit most from the findings?

A.Farmers. B.Botanists.

C.Researchers. D.Environmentalists.

One evening after work, I found a beautiful little fox with a injured leg. He was like a Disney fox. Then I feed her some fish. A couple of weeks later, the fox was back, much better and had often come ever since. She was comfortable enough to come really close me. She allowed me to take photo of her, the best of them I posted on social media. Soon after, she took her cubs together to visit to me, which was really unexpected. It’s amazing to have this connection with something so wildly in this busy city, but happily the loving fox still keeps turning up.

My Perfect Imperfect Life

A few years ago, I was standing at the barre (扶手杠) waiting for my adult ballet class when I heard a voice behind me. “So, do you have this perfect life?”

My first reaction was to _______ who was being asked such an odd question. Then I remembered there were only two of us in the room. When I turned _______, the other woman was looking straight at me.

I had no idea how to answer it. Was she _______? Who has a perfect life? Sure, occasionally I did find the perfect dress or the perfect pair of shoes, _______ never would I use that word to describe anything about me or my life. I felt a twinge of guilt for somehow giving her that _______.

She watched me. I finally _______ to whisper a quick “No”.

By then, the teacher had entered the room and turned on the music to start class. With a sigh of _________, I moved my feet into the best position. But as soon as my knees bent for our first pose, I realized my _______ had been disturbed. This woman’s words wouldn’t _______ echoing in my thoughts.

I wanted to know how she came up with her very mistaken _______. If she knew anything about my life, she never would have had the _______ to ask me that question.

I did my best to do our floor exercises in front of the mirror. For a few moments, I didn’t see the usual _______ of my older self attempting to use a beautiful art form to _______ my gracefulness. I only saw the little girl whose father died when she was two, the child who walked home from elementary school every day to an empty house, who learned to sew her own clothes to _______ money.

Perfect. My life had been far from it.

When those memories ________, I was left with a vision of the woman I had become, the woman _______ by all those things I considered imperfect. I now saw the woman who had learned to be self-reliant, who _______ her family and her friends, who didn’t take life for granted. Was that the “perfect” this woman had detected?

I still don’t know, but I no longer feel _______ or feel like I must keep track of all the difficult times to prove my life isn’t _______. If ever again asked whether my life is perfect, I would have a different _______. Because now I see that, despite all its imperfection, it is.

Sleep has become a big deal in working life. Thanks to high-profile figures including Arianna Huffington, sleeping is no longer seen as a sign of weakness among competitive colleagues.

1.A US study has found that in areas where the sun sets earlier, people sleep longer — and this translates into higher earnings. In the long term, just one extra hour of sleep a week increases wages by 4.9%. 2.But don’t move house — the higher wages correspond almost exactly with higher house prices. Actually, if you want to sleep more, there are better ways to do it than moving house — just buy better curtains.

3.Each extra hour of sleep should be taken away from working time. So how can sleeping earn you money? The answer is productivity. The biggest effects come through employees who work on commission. If you go to work well rested, you are livelier and happier, and can sell more to increase your earnings.

Even small amounts of sleep deprivation (缺乏) can have large effects. Another study found that sleeping six hours a night for two weeks produced the same results in cognitive tests as being totally sleep-deprived for up to two days straight. 4.If you struggle to get eight hours of sleep a night, a siesta(午休)can have a “reset” effect, and your productivity improves afterward.

Lack of sleep has already been shown to be worse for productivity than being overweight or underweight. So, why are you still reading this? 5.

A.You should go back to bed.

B.But a mid-afternoon nap can help.

C.Therefore, you should get enough sleep.

D.This goes against conventional economics.

E.Research shows that more sleep can lead to us earning more money.

F.So if you live in an area that gets darker earlier, you should be richer.

G.You are supposed to get down to business as quickly as possible.

Want to get your package delivered via robots? Now there’s an app for that. If you live in Washington D. C. , or Redwood, you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding its own business, but attracting the attention of many curious onlookers.

The autonomous machines were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focusing on delivering meals from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world. This week, the company unveiled plans to broaden its delivery service beyond food to include package, a move that led it to declare itself “the world’s first robot package delivery service”. The next time you order food, this cute robot might roll up to deliver it. The package delivery service is not available to everyone yet.

The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4mph and can detect obstacles from 30 feet away. “The robot can operate through anything,” Nick Handrick, head of operations for Starship’s D.C. office, said. “ If you had something in the way — a stick — it’s able to climb sticks.”

To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $ 10 per month, customers need to download the company’s app. Customers then create a “Starship Delivery Address”, a unique address inside a Starship facility, where they can have package sent from places such as Amazon.com. Once a package is delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text notification that allows them to schedule a home delivery via robot. The robots are opened by customers via a mobile phone code.

Barriers exist for robotic ground delivery, with many states requiring that humans be in control of delivery robots. Those regulations haven’t stopped Starship Technologies from accumulating experience on streets around the globe ahead of the company’s latest launch. The company says its robots have covered more than 125,000 miles in more than 100 cities in 20 countries.

1.What can we know about the robotic delivery?

A.It is part of a trial project by Starship Technologies.

B.You can use the service free of charge via smart phones.

C.The robots are opened by customers with a text notification.

D.The robotic delivery is available to everyone at present.

2.What does the underlined word “unveiled” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Revised B.Released

C.Restored D.Reset

3.What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The good news of the service.

B.The disadvantages of the robotic delivery.

C.How the robotic delivery works.

D.Robotic delivery develops despite challenges.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.A New Robot Was Invented B.Wheelless Robots Are on the Way

C.How Robots Deliver Packages D.Packages Will Be Delivered by Robots

We all have one shirt in the closet that we don’t want to get rid of, yet keeping around because we can’t bear to just throw it in the garbage. We don’t wear it anymore. Being a little out of style, your old T-shirt needs a new home where it can be appreciated. One city in Toronto has started a project to give it one.

Earlier this year the Toronto suburbs of Markham introduced a new program encouraging its residents and residents of nearby suburbs to donate their old unwanted clothing. The program is exceptional because unlike most of those second-hand stores, they are accepting old clothing that isn’t quite in perfect condition. It is breathing new life into these typically-trashed items. Contrary to common belief, textiles(纺织品)are not only used for clothing, and these items are being re-purposed in a variety of interesting ways.

The city has set up many different donation centers around the suburbs and residents are encouraged to donate any unwanted textiles they happen to have lying around their house. It’s volunteers’ duty to divide the donations into different sorts. Those items in usable and good condition are donated to local homeless shelters and other aid centers. Those which are not are shipped off to be used for industrial purposes. Only when there is no more industrial need for fabric and textiles will they begin to use their last place — a landfill outside the city.

The program isn’t the city’s only green initiative (倡议). It has already had one of Canada and the world’s largest solar panels, and it is said that they are steadily working towards a shift to 100% renewable energy. The city also has subsidized (补助) farmers’ markets and over 125 miles of bike paths. As a result, Markham also has a much lower rate of obesity than other Canadian cities. Now, it’s working towards another goal — 100% recycling of unwanted textiles.

1.What does the underlined word “one” in paragraph refer to?

A.A shirt. B.A city.

C.A home. D.A closet.

2.What do the volunteers do with the unwanted clothing?

A.Sell them in good condition. B.Sort through the donations.

C.Share them with poor kids. D.Send them for industrial use.

3.What does the author want to say in the last paragraph?

A.The city has been the best place to live in Canada.

B.The program is more successful than expected.

C.The citizens have fallen in love with the city.

D.The city is working hard to be a green one.

4.What is the main idea of this text?

A.One Canadian city is giving old clothing a new life.

B.Old clothes are becoming more useful in Canada.

C.Rubbish has been put into wide use in Canada.

D.Donation centers become popular in Canada.

It's not a new phenomenon, but have you noticed how many nouns are being used as verbs? We all use them, often without noticing what we're doing.

I was arranging to meet someone for dinner last week, and I said “I’ll pencil it in my diary”, and my friend said “You can ink it in”, meaning that it was a firm arrangement not a tentative one!

Many of these new verbs are linked to new technology. An obvious example is the word fax. We all got used to sending and receiving faxes, and then soon started talking about faxing something and promising we'd fax it immediately. Then along came email, and we were soon all emailing each other madly. How did we do without it? I can hardly imagine life without my daily emails.

Email reminds me, of course, of my computer and its software, which has produced another couple of new verbs. On my computer I can bookmark those pages from the World Wide Web that I think I'll want to look at again, thus saving all the effort of remembering their addresses and calling them up from scratch. I can do the same thing on my PC, but there I don't bookmark; I favorite—coming from “favorite pages”, so the verb comes from an adjective not a noun.

Now my children bought me a mobile phone, known simply as a mobile and I had to learn yet more new verbs. I can message someone, that is, I can leave a message for them on their phone. Or I can text them, write a few words suggesting when and where to meet, for example. How long will it be before I can mobile them, that is, phone them using my mobile? I haven’t heard that verb yet, but I’m sure I will soon. Perhaps I’ll start using it myself!

1.“I’ll pencil it in my diary” in the second paragraph probably means         .

A.it was a firm arrangement

B.he prefers a pencil to a pen

C.the arrangement should be written as a diary

D.it was an uncertain arrangement

2.A website address can be easily found if it has been______.

A.favorited B.messaged C.emailed D.texted

3.Which of the following has not been used as a verb yet?

A.message B.mobile C.email D.page

4.The best title for this passage is____.

A.Technology and Language.

B.Development of the English language

C.New Technology and New words

D.New Verbs from Nouns

With the Pimsleur Method, you’ll be able to learn any language you want as you go about your day. You can learn on your way to work, or while you’re out running tasks, cooking dinner, walking the dog and so on in just 30 minutes a day. In fact, Pimsleur’s scientifically-proven method is so powerful that you’ll actually start speaking a new language after a few lessons.

How is it possible? 50 years ago, Dr. Paul Pimsleur, a linguistics (语言学) professor and researcher at Ohio State University and UCLA, discovered that the best way to effectively acquire a new language is by hearing the language used in everyday situations and using it so it easily sticks in your mind.

The Pimsleur Method develops your natural ability to listen so you can:

·Understand what you hear.

·Respond easily and naturally.

·Pronounce words with a near-native accent.

·Amaze friends and family.

There is nothing more exciting or enjoyable than speaking a new language.

Click here now to try Pimsleur’s Revolutionary Method Free for One Week and you can:

"Mrs. Krycia, that song...it’s about me. I am the bully. Please, can you help me stop?" The class had already been dismissed for lunch, and I was puzzled about why Tommy had made sure he was at the end of the line when he usually jumped up to push his way to the front. Approaching me with a great deal of obvious discomfort, Tommy looked up at me with pleading eyes. I could not believe my ears!

I was teaching a fifth grade class at the request of the teacher who was at her wits’ end with the bullying behavior in her classroom—Room 7. I had just played a song called "Don’t Laugh at Me". The lyrics really could have been written with this boy in mind. The song described a variety of people who had been bullied and how much it hurt.

Tommy laughed at everyone. He was loud and obnoxious(可恶至极的) about it. He would stand up, point, and loudly say something insulting regarding the person’s behavior. It could have been as simple as someone misspelling a word in class, or tripping, or perhaps asking a question he considered stupid. "Ha ha!" he would laugh and point at John. “You are so stupid!” John would hang his head and shuffle his feet. Across the room, Scott would be crying; he couldn’t stand conflict. Scot spent a good deal of time crying. Everyone ignored him. Tommy got the attention, and he was, by all definitions, quickly earning the title of class bully. The behavior was appealing. The other boys had picked up on it, and now it seemed that the boys in Room 7 were competing for the title of "class thug(恶棍)." Tommy was not a big boy, but he walked big. His fists were always clenched, and his posture said, "I’ll get you if you mess with me." He was eleven years and appeared to be headed for big trouble.

Perhaps it was not until that moment that Tommy recognized the effect his behavior could potentially have on others. Perhaps he had already noticed that he was being mean and searching for a way to change. Either way, here was my golden opportunity to do something with him. I asked the teacher if I could take Tommy and other boys she considered to be the biggest troublemakers and meet with them twice a week. She felt thrilled. So I began meeting with the boys and asked them each to make one small, obtained goal-something they could achieve in a week’s time. Tommy’s goal was to stop laughing and pointing at people. He was to make a mark on a piece of masking tape(胶带纸) we had applied to his desk every time he noticed himself pointing and laughing. I was hopeful.

Everyone in business has been told that success is all about attracting and retaining (留住) customers. It sounds _______and achievable. But, _______, words of wisdom are soon forgotten. Once companies have attracted customers they often _______ the second half of the story. In the excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the product, managers tend to become _______. They forget what they regard as the boring side of business—_______ that the customer remains a customer.

_______ to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the average company loses between 10 and 30 percent of its customers every year. In constantly changing _______, this is not surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any _______ how many customers they have lost.

Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to those lost opportunities and calculate the _______implications. Cutting down the number of customers a company loses can make a big ________ in its performance. Research in the US found that a five percent decrease in the number of defecting (流失的) customers led to ________ increases of between 25 and 85 percent.

In the US, Domino’s Pizza estimates that a ________customer is worth more than $5,000 over ten years. A customer who receives a poor quality product or service on their first visit and ________ never returns, is losing the company thousands of dollars in ________ profits (more if you consider how many people they are likely to tell about their bad experience).

The logic behind cultivating customer ________ is impossible to deny. “In practice most companies’ marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with little attention paid to ________ them”, says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University’ School of Management. “Research suggests that there is a ________ relationship between retaining customers and making profits. ________ customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers. Furthermore, they tend to be less price ________, and may provide free word-of-mouth advertising. Retaining customers also makes it ________ for competitors to enter a market or increase their share of a market.

Pick a few nights over winter break to let each family member pick an old favorite game that everyone can play together. Even if it’s a childhood game everyone thinks they’ve outgrown, the whole family will have fun just being silly and sharing memories together. 2..

2. Avoid cabin fever

Even when the temperatures plummet and the days are short, it can boost everyone’s spirits to get outside for a little while.

Bundle up and take a walk in the snow together. Look for holiday decorations on neighborhood houses, or bring neighbors homemade cookies.

3.

Plan a skating or sledding expedition.

3. 4.

If your kids love The Elf on the Shelf, you’re in luck — IHOP(R) partnered with The Elf on the Shelf(R) to create a magical limited-time menu, available now through January 1, 2020. On the way back to the North Pole, a few adventurous Scout Elves snuck into the IHOP kitchen to whip up special, elvish treats using signature ingredients and a little bit of elf magic. Enjoy your special treat or meal before or after you go sledding or skating for a perfect winter celebration with the family.

4. Enjoy a holiday lights tour

Some areas provide organized tours that you’ll need to purchase tickets for ahead of time,   5. For a more casual, impromptu lights tour with the family, check out your neighborhood online group or ask friends on social media for local neighborhoods that really go all out. Then you can just pile the kids in the car for a drive to enjoy holiday lights at your own pace.

A.Clear off a large table and gather a bunch of art and craft supplies for a major creativity marathon.

B.Pop some popcorn or whip up hot chocolate to enjoy while you play your kids’ -and your- favorite games.

C.Throw a few snowballs around or join forces to make a snowman.

D.Here are some ideas for you and your family to enjoy time off from school and hanging out together.

E.With a little creativity, you can find plenty of special ways to enjoy winter break together.

F.Celebrate a fun holiday meal together

G.and you may even get to enjoy viewing festive holiday lights from the back of a limousine.

PARIS -- Students from the Chinese mainland scored the highest level in reading, science, and mathematics in the latest PISA global education test hosted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), results released on Tuesday showed. They are followed by students from Singapore and China's two special administrative regions -- Macao and Hong Kong. The top OECD countries were Estonia, Canada, Finland, and Ireland.

The OECD's PISA 2018 tested around 600,000 15-year-old students in 79 countries and economies on reading, science, and mathematics. The main focus was on reading, with most students doing the test on computers. Students from Beijing, Shanghai, provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, represented the Chinese mainland in this test. In reading, they scored significantly higher than their peers from other countries.

"Most countries, particularly in the developed world, have seen little improvement in their performances over the past decade, even though spending on schooling increased by 15 percent over the same period," said the OECD when releasing the results. "One in four students in OECD countries are unable to complete even the most basic reading tasks, meaning they are likely to struggle to find their way through life in an increasingly volatile, digital world," it added.

In science and math, around one in four students in OECD countries, on average, do not attain the basic level of science (22 percent) or math (24 percent). That means they cannot, for example, convert a price into a different currency. About one in six students (16.5 percent) in China's Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and one in seven in Singapore (13.8 percent), perform at the highest level in math, compared to only 2.4 percent in OECD countries.

As to equity in education, students performed better than the OECD average in 11 countries and economies, including Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Japan, South Korea, Norway, and the United Kingdom, while the relationship between reading performance and socio-economic status was weakest. "This means that these countries have the most equitable systems where students can flourish, regardless of their background," said the OECD.

The test found that girls significantly outperformed boys in reading on average across OECD countries, by the equivalent of nearly a year of schooling.

1.What can be inferred from para.3-4?

A.Most of the OECD countries show little improvement in the test.

B.Students in OECD countries have difficulty in the increasingly volatile, digital world.

C.Students in OECD countries do not attain the basic level of reading.

D.Singapore students perform at the highest level in math.

2.What does the word “convert” in para.4 refer to?

A.identify B.transform

C.confirm D.exclaim

3.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.A test was carried out to find the smartest student.

B.The performance that the students showed in math in the test is worrying.

C.There is an urgent need to improve the equity in education.

D.Students from China did a good job in the PISA global educational test.

In July, 2018, my mom asked me to accompany her to her 2019 school reunion in Malaysia. “I’d prefer to travel with you due to my bad eyes,” she said. “What do you think?” I was busy, but figured 2019 was ages away. “Sure!” I said, and forgot all about it.

Then, in June, my mom reminded me of my promise, but I’d totally forgotten about it by then. Did I have the time? Did I have the money? Did I have the will?

I’d walk into a fire for my mom, but we’re very different travelers. I usually travel alone with a backpack, whereas mom never travels alone, and takes so many carry-on bags that she looks like a Christmas tree. There was also the boredom. Mom’s childhood town is lovely, but we saw everything there years ago.

“Are you sure you need me to come with you?” I asked over the phone. Silence. Then Mom screamed at me not to worry about it and she wasn’t going any more. I screamed at her not to be silly; she screamed “Fine”; I screamed “Fine”. Then I felt bad and booked our flights and hotel immediately.

At first, it was fine. We drove past the apartment where she grew up, ate great food, then met her friends for yum cha (早茶). After a few days of this, however, I was bored. I’d grown tired of hearing the non-stop gossip about people I didn’t know. On the night of the reunion, I convinced mom to go by herself.

While she was out, I swam, caught up with work, and stared at the ceiling. When she came back, I was in a good mood. She was in an even better one, telling me about the reunion in ways that made me cry with laughter. All we’d needed was time apart.

The next day, as we shopped together, my mom laughed loudly as she pointed at a perfume (香水) bottle with the name “Si” on it – Si means faeces (粪便) in Cantonese. Mom put some of the perfume on, as we both cried with laughter.

She’ll never be the most well-matched person for me to travel with, but covered in Si, she reminded me that she’s definitely the funniest.

With COVID-19 floating around, you know getting your hands clean is your best defense from viruses and bacteria. You use either soap or sanitizer(消毒剂).But something that’s not as clear is which works better.

1.Wash your hands with soap whenever possible, and if you can’t get to a sink, sanitizer is good, too, according to Preeti Malanti, a medical professor focused on infectious disease at the University of Michigan.

The way sanitizer works is primarily through the power of alcohol. Alcohol can “murder” many types of bacteria and viruses by destroying their outermost layer, making them unable to take over a host. This isn’t effective with viruses with a hard outer shell, like norovirus. 2.Soap works a little differently. Instead of killing viruses and bacteria, its purpose is to lift away dirt, oil, and other dangerous agents that get on your hands.3.It only disinfects(消毒)bacteria and viruses and can leave insect killers or spores(孢子)on your hands.

Washing away the coronavirus might not sound as violent as stopping it dead in its tracks, but it’s proven to be more effective.4.

It is possible to over wash your hands or use too much sanitizer? Not really, says Sanjay Maggiwar from Washington University--through constantly scrabbing your hands with soap will probably dry them out.

Just be sure to keep washing your hands as regularly as you can.5.They might be at risk of being sneezed on. It might be smart to wipe down your cell phone, too, if you happen to use that a lot on the run.

A.Sanitizer doesn't remove anything.

B.So, what do the experts recommend?

C.Use what you can to stay clean and healthy.

D.How can you make soap work more effectively?

E.There isn't anything that is really better than effective hand washing

F.Still, it'll keep you protected from a lot of the invisible bacteria and viruses.

G.Also remember to disinfect shared surfaces at your home or office when possible.

The MOOCs (massive open online courses) reached its peak of popularity in 2012. Now while people who drop out outnumber those who sign up for online courses and MOOCs are still the early days, there’s no denying there’s still value in their existence. Courses does not give our figures on its paying learners. Udacity says it has 13,000 people doing its degrees. Whatever the number are, the reinvented MOOCs matter because they are solving two problems they share with every provider of later-life education.

The first of these is the cost of learning, not just in money but also in time. Formal education rests on the idea of qualifications that take a set period to complete. Students in their early 20s can more easily afford a lengthy time commitment because they are less likely to have other responsibilities. However, people in later life, when they manage part-time of distance learning, find balancing learning, working and family life can cause great pressures.

Moreover, the world of work increasingly demands a quick response from the education system to provide people with the desired qualifications. To take one example from Burning Class, in 2014 alone 65,000 American job-vacancy(职位空缺)ads asked for a cyber-security certificate. Since only 50,000 people in America hole such a certificate and it takes five years of experience to earns one, that requirement will be hard to meet. Lets demanding professions also put up huge harriers to entry. If you want to become a licensed cosmetologist(美容师)in New Hampshire, you will need to have gained 1,500 hours of training.

In response, the MOOCs have tried to make their content as digestible and flexible as possible. Degrees are broken onto modules; modules into courses; courses into short periods. The MOOCs test for the most suitable length to ensure people complete the course; six minutes is thought to be the sweet spot for online video and four weeks for a course.

1.What can we infer about the MOOCs?

A.They came into being in 2012.

B.They offer more course to choose from.

C.They are still immature but promising.

D.They help solve problems cause by jobs markets.

2.What may cause pressure to people who take up learning in late life?

A.Time management. B.Education cost.

C.Job hunting. D.Distance learning.

3.What can we learn from the text?

A.Getting certificates can be quicker by learning online.

B.Young students can't afford formal education.

C.Online learning will guarantee one a good job.

D.Entering less demanding jobs is easier.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Education and Work B.Qualifications and Requirements

C.The Return of the MOOCs D.The Development of the MOOCs

The latest data form Nature’s Calendar shows that the butterflies, newts and neat-building blackbirds have been spotted months before they would normally appear. An analysis of the conditions in 2019 found that all but one of the 50 spring events the scheme(计划)tracks were early last year, as a result of warmer winter temperatures. The Woodland Trust, which runs the Nature’s Calendar scheme, warns that many species are losing their seasonal cues(提示)as winters warm and seasons shift.

Increasingly unstable weather could tempt some animals out of hibernation(冬眠)too soon, only to be hit by sharply dropping temperatures. And some birds appeared to be breeding too late as they make the most of vital food sources that appear earlier than normal, the Trust said.

Lorienne Whittle, at the Woodland Trust, said, “ It seems that last year we almost lost winter as a season--it was much milder and our data shows wildlife is responding, potentially putting many at risk.”

And she said, “It appears that some species are able to adapt to the advancing spring better than others. Oak trees respond by producing their first leaves earlier and caterpillars seem to be keeping pace. But blue tits, great tits and pied flycatchers are struggling to react in time for their chicks to take advantage of the peak amount of caterpillars--the food source on which they depend.”

Active newts were recorded in late December in Cheshire and a blackbird was spotted building a nest at the beginning of January. Accordingly, a report for The Wildlife Trusts suggested that hedgerows(树篱)be protected from being cut during the nesting season.

1.What does the underlined word“temp" in paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.Help. B.Attract.

C.Guide. D.Cheat.

2.Why are oak trees mentioned in the text?

A.To explain why plants respond to the climate change.

B.To prove some species fit in with the climate change better.

C.To show how caterpillars react to the changing environment.

D.To suggest plants adapt to warmer winters better than animals.

3.How is the text mainly developed?

A.By listing environmental damages. B.By offering practical suggestions.

C.By making striking comparisons. D.By presenting tracking results.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.Some birds are in danger of dying out.

B.Warmer winters increase the threat to wildlife.

C.A scheme will be carried out to protect wildlife.

D.Plants are struggling to survive warmer winters.

Designing a winter coat that transforms into a sleeping bag for people living on the streets would have been enough for most folks to sit back and revel(陶醉)in a kind deed done well. Others would call it good if they managed to take the attempt a step further by creating jobs for homeless people to sew the garments.

But Veronika Scott, the founder of the Empowerment Plan, wants those achievements to be just two of many stepping stones on the path to dreams fulfilled for single parents struggling to provide homes for their kids. Her vision has grown far beyond the design-school project thought up five years ago, when she was a 21-year-old student and people on the streets started calling her”the crazy coat lady”. Now The Empowerment Plan, is a fully developed business that has provided convertible(可变的)coats to more than 20,000 globally, given jobs and education to more than 40 parents, and helped move more than 80 children out of shelters.

Scott said she’s proud of the sleeping-bag coat she designed, but her main goal is getting people to the point where they and their families would never need one. That means locking past merely giving homeless parents jobs, but also helping them gain the education and skills needed to leave. The Empowerment Plan after a couple years and pursue their dreams.

Scott’s drive comes from her own upbringing as the scared child of parents who both struggled with unemployment and addiction. “The Empowerment Plan was a way of creating something I wish my own family had had growing up: an employment opportunity that would allow them to stabilize and get the financial stability they never had.”

Scott wanted to show parents and their kids “that living in a homeless shelter isn’t a defining (定义性的)characteristic, nor a life sentence.” Her employees all have been able to move into permanent housing with their children within the first four to six weeks of working for The Empowerment Plan, she said.

1.What is The Empowerment Plan's final aim?

A.More sleeping-bag cut can be produced.

B.The homeless can own a permanent house.

C.The project can cover all the homeless people.

D.Homeless families can stand on their own feet.

2.What motivates Scott to start the project?

A.Homeless people's suffering. B.Her enthusiasm for design.

C.Her background of growth. D.Upsetting social problems.

3.Which of the following can best describe Scott?

A.Ambitious and earning. B.Cooperative and generous.

C.Proud and patient. D.Creative and demanding.

4.Which section of a website is this text most likely from?

A.Fun lifestyles. B.Latest News.

C.Diverse Cultures. D.True Stories.

An old wooden seat that Susan extremely valued often reminded her of mother’s Golden Rule.

Back in the 1930s, the country life was really tough. One day after dinner, Susan’s mother sat on the seat, announcing to the children the Golden Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Susan reflected carefully and seriously on what her mother had said. She resolved that she would keep in mind and follow the rule.

One Saturday afternoon, she went to farmer Jason’s inn (小旅馆) to get the pay for her mother’s washing for the guests there, which amounted to five dollars. She found Jason in the yard, who, as all the villagers knew, was selfish and mean.

His eyes clouded with anger, as he had just finished a quarrel with one of his guests. He held in his hand an open wallet, full of bills. He barely noticed Susan until she made her request for the money. Instead of shouting at her, as usual, for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a bank note.

Feeling relieved for escaping from Jason so easily, Susan hurried out of the inn. When carefully putting the money into her pocket, she discovered that Jason had given her two bills instead of one, and her first reaction was joy at the unexpected prize. She looked around and there was nobody nearby to share her discovery. “It is mine. All mine.” she said to herself. “I will buy mum a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for brother Tom too.”

Just at that moment, she realized that Jason must have given the extra money to her by mistake, and therefore she had no right to own it. But a voice of temptation (诱惑) whispered, “He gave it, and you can keep it. He will never know, even if it is a mistake. ”

As Susan hurried home, this conflict went on in her mind.
