In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving. For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball(躲避球).1.

A New Model

In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. 2.They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.

“We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE, program for the Victor, New York, school district.

A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more funding(资金) to PE programs.

Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. 3.Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.

Outside the Gym

Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock climbing. 4.It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.”

Lifelong Skills

In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders learn parkour(跑酷). Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim. 5.

Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy.

A.They are also cutting back on team sports.

B.It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.

C.Other schools are now following his program.

D.Instead there is a list of different fitness classes.

E.The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.

F.She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.

G.Kids who are not as athletic sometimes hate playing team sports.

Cattle manure(粪肥) has become one of the world’s greatest environmental killers, but one Dutch artist is using chemistry to turn it into something that is both eco-friendly and valuable.

In recent years, scientists around the world have made great progress in their attempts to recycle cattle manure, including turning it into natural fertilizer, but Eindhoven designer Jalila Essaidi didn’t think they were efficient enough to solve the global manure problem. So she started on her very own solution, one that approached animal waste as a valuable material that could be processed into useful products.

She started by separating the waste, with the dry manure used to get pure cellulose(纤维素) from the grass that cows eat. From the wet manure, she got acids used to create a natural liquid plastic which was used to make fiber that are later turned into fabric(material used for making clothes).

This new material was named Mestic, from mest, the Dutch word for manure. Essaidi claim that it has the same function as plastic from fossil fuels, but is bio-degradable(可生物降解的). Better yet, the degradability can be dealt with in the lab, making it possible to create materials that last for different periods of time depending on their purpose. “This is not the first time that scientists have been looking for ways to solve the manure problem, but it is the first time that manure is being considered as a valuable resource.” the Dutch designer said.

Last year, Jalila Essaldi partnered with the city of Eindhoven to produce a fashion show using Mestic-based fabrics. Her Mestic collection was so impressive that clothing giant H&M awarded her the Global Change Award and a $1million prize. And cow manure is just the beginning of Jalila Essaldi’s experiments with animal waste. “After cows, we’ll deal with pigs and other animals,” she said.

1.Why has the author written the text?

A.To suggest practical ways to deal with cattle manure.

B.To advertise for some clothes made by a Dutch company.

C.To introduce a designer who turns cow manure into clothing.

D.To persuade people to purchase products made from manure.

2.Which is the correct order of making Mestic-based clothing?

A.acids→liquid plastic→manure→fabric→fibers→clothing

B.manure→acids→liquid plastic→fibers→fabric→clothing

C.liquid plastic→manure→fabric→fibers→ acids→clothing

D.fibers→manure→acids→fabric→liquid plastic→clothing

3.What do we know about Mestic?

A.Its smell is rather terrible. B.It is made from fossil fuels.

C.Its name has a Dutch origin. D.It can only be made in the lab.

4.What do Jalila Essaidi’s words in the last paragraph mean?

A.Something more needs to be done about cow manure.

B.She will switch to other animals waste in the future.

C.What experiments to do next really puzzles her.

D.The future of fashionable clothing is optimistic.

Mercury(水星) is the closest planet to the sun. It is a planet slightly larger than the Earth’s moon. It is covered in craters. Some craters have ice in them, even though the planet is hot. Sunlight never touches some parts because of the planet’s special position. Without air, there are great temperature differences between the coldest and hottest parts. Mercury days are so long that there are big differences between temperatures on the daylight side and the night side.

Mercury was created billions of years ago, when big rocks ran into each other. After these accidents, the planet was frequently visited by meteorites (流星) for several hundred million years. There were also many volcanic eruptions. As the planet cooled, the thin, rocky outside shell reduced in diameter(直径) by about 3 kilometers.

The Caloris Basin is one of the largest craters on Mercury. This big crater is 1, 300 kilometers wide and was formed when a large rock, about 100 kilometers across, knocked into the surface. Beethoven, another large crater, is 643 kilometers across.

The cliffs on Mercury are up to 2 kilometers high and hundreds of kilometers long. The cliffs were formed when the thin surface fell apart, as volcanic activity slowed down and Mercury became cooler.

One Mercury day lasts about 59 Earth days. Mercury takes about 88 Earth days to have a complete year, instead of the 365 days that we have on the Earth. Mercury speeds around the sun so that there are three Mercury days every two Mercury years! Mercury has a strange relationship with the Earth. Every 117 days, when Mercury is closest to the Earth, it always has the same side facing us.

Mariner 10 is the only spacecraft to visit Mercury. It made three visits to Mercury in, the 1970s, taking photos of many cliffs and craters. Although the first three visits answered many questions, they have raised others.

1.What is the surface of Mercury like?

A.It’s generally flat. B.It’s hot everywhere.

C.It’s bright everywhere. D.It’s cold in some parts.

2.Why did Mercury’s diameter get smaller?

A.A drop in temperature changed its size.

B.A great many meteorites ran into it.

C.It got out of shape as time passed.

D.Lots of surface rocks fell off.

3.What do we know about Mercury?

A.One Mercury day lasts about 88 Earth days.

B.It turns around the sun faster than the Earth.

C.Six Mercury days are two Mercury years.

D.It has more cliffs than large craters.

4.What happened after Mariner 10’s three visits to Mercury?

A.Another spacecraft visited Mercury.

B.New cliffs and craters were formed.

C.New signs of volcanic activity appeared.

D.Lots of new puzzles needed to be solved.

The bus stops in the Dutch city of Utrecht are as beautiful as they are practical. Now, 316 bus stops feature a green roof that adds some life to the city, while also storing rainwater, catching dust, and providing some much needed shade during the warmer months. This project is good for the honey bee population that is attracted to the plants on the roof. To keep up this successful ecosystem, municipal(市政的)workers drive around in electric cars, taking care of the mini gardens.

Another one of the biggest benefits to come out of these green stops is the improved air quality. Smoking, cars, and bacteria all contribute to polluting the air we breathe. These eco-friendly public spaces act as an air purifier for city people, though humans aren’t the only group that benefit from them.

Utrecht has also made great efforts towards moving their transportation system away from gas-guzzling(高耗油的)buses. The city replaced 10 gas-guzzling buses with electric powered buses and plans to have only CO2 inactive buses on the road by 2028.

The buses have a system that records the driver’s efficiency and rider’s comfort levels. Drivers can win prizes based on how safe and comfortable the ride was. The city is also one of the most bicycle-friendly places in the world. Roads have been redesigned for cyclists’ convenience and there is a new state-of-the-art 6,000 space bicycle parking area that is located beneath Utrecht’s central train station.

Utrecht offers prize money to keep citizens energized and motivated to live greener lives. There are even prize money for people to transform their roofs into green roofs too. Achieving the goals of an eco-friendlier city takes cooperation and Utrecht is leading the way to protect our environment.

1.What is special about the bus stops in Utrecht?

A.They are eco-friendly.

B.They can save a lot of energy.

C.They are artificially-intelligent.

D.They can provide electric power for buses.

2.What can we infer about the changes to the transportation system in Utrecht?

A.Not all buses are gas-guzzling at present.

B.Gas-guzzling cars have been completely replaced.

C.Only electric private cars are allowed on the roads.

D.Buses have air purifiers fixed on them.

3.What might passengers think of the bus service in Utrecht?

A.Buses are always too crowded.

B.Buses are often behind schedule.

C.Buses are too big for redesigned roads.

D.Buses are generally comfortable and safe.

4.What are people living in Utrecht encouraged to do?

A.Give up smoking. B.Create gardens on their roofs.

C.Paint their roofs green. D.Buy more honey.

Last month, I took part in a volunteer activity in a village. We start off by bus at 9 o’clock. After three-hour bus ride, we saw the village surrounded by hills. It was very difficult to drive on the rocky road, but we got off the bus and walked there. The villagers standing by the road welcomed us warm. Cooked with those vegetables grow by the villagers, the lunch was tasted delicious. After lunch, we played game with the village children. Then they visited an old man living alone on the hillside. We sang a few songs, what made him really happy. I think when doing volunteer work, you help others and you gain happiness for return.

Make Your Fitness Resolution Stick

Last year, the most common New Year’s resolution was fitness-related. A study showed that approximately 50 million Americans swore to increase activities and lose weight. 1., success was hard to achieve.     Nicole Eisenberg’s older son has wanted to be a star of the stage since he was a kid. He took voice, dance and drama lessons and attended the well-known Stagedoor Manor summer camp for half a dozen years. “I had to take him on 20 auditions (试演) for musical theater. But he did it with me. I did not helicopter parent him. I was co-pilot.” Ms Eisenberg said.

Helicopter parenting is a term that become popular in the 1980s and grew out of fear about children’s physical safety. It is the practice of hovering anxiously near one’s children, monitoring their every activity. In the 1990s, it meant not just constantly monitoring children, but also always teaching them.

Or was she a snowplow parent? Snowplow parenting is an even more obsessive (强迫性的) form, which keeps their children’s futures obstacle-free, so they don’t have to come across failure, frustration or lose opportunities.

It’s a parent’s job to support the children, and to use their adult wisdom to prepare for the future when their children aren’t mature enough to do so. It’s painful for any parent to watch their child mess up, or not achieve their goals. Now, however, the stakes (赌注) are so much high. “Increasingly, it appears any mistake could be very serious for their class outcome,” said Philip Cohen, a sociologist at the University of Maryland.

“The point is to prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid.” Ms Lythcott-Haims said. “You have made a role for yourself of always being there to handle things for your child, so it gets worse because your child is ill-equipped to manage the basic tasks of life.” Learning to solve problems, take risks and overcome frustration are important life skills.

However, snowplowing has gone so far that many young people are in crisis, lacking these problem-solving skills and experiencing anxiety. Many snowplow parents know it’s problematic, too. But because of privilege or peer pressure or anxiety about their children’s futures, they do it anyway.

1.What do helicopter parents and snowplow parents have in common?

A.They teach their children everything.

B.They do everything for their children.

C.They care too much about their children.

D.They only fix their eyes on their children.

2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined part in Paragraph 5?

A.A thousand miles begins with a single step.

B.All things are difficult before they are easy.

C.Good company on the road is the shortest cut.

D.Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

3.What is the important effect of snowplowing on children?

A.The shortage of problem-solving ability.

B.The decrease of their anxiety.

C.The satisfaction of learning.

D.The pressure from their friends.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Helicopter Parents and Their Children

B.Parents Develop Problem-solving Skills

C.Parents Prepare for Children’s Future

D.Parents Rob Children of Adulthood

History of amusement parks takes us back to the bar-periodic fairs, like the Bartholomew Fair which started in England. These can be considered a parent for the modern amusement park. Opening in the Elizabethan period, the fair had developed as a center of amusement with entertainment with fun, food, games, and many other attractions. The beer festival held in Munich, Germany which started in 1810 and the country and state fairs in the US, also played a part in the brief history of amusement park. Unlike the Bartholomew Fair, these annual events were usually held during an important time when crops were ripe, which deserved to be marked.

Amusement parks are also known to have grown out of the pleasure gardens that became very popular at the start of the Industrial Revolution. These were the zones where one could shun the dull urban life for a short while. We can find the oldest and still-surviving amusement park in the world: Bakken in Denmark, which opened in 1583. These parks consisted of fireworks displays, rides and the modern railroad to accommodate the growing expectations from their customers.

Another turning point in the history of amusement parks was the world’s fairs which began in 1851. The Crystal Palace in London, England was a landmark and celebrated the industrial achievements of the world. These were seen as symbols of economic and industrial success. In the last decade of the 19th century, the electric trolley lines became extremely popular. Mechanical amusements, dance hall, sports fields, and restaurants were included as regular entertainments, as the history of amusement parks reflects.

The golden age in the brief history of amusement parks didn’t appear until people especially Americans spent less time on work and got a steady rise in their personal income. A number of amusement parks including the Kiddie Park were set up outside major cities and in the countryside, to make full use of this new economic opportunity. The original Kiddie Park is located in San Antonio, Texas and is still in operation today.

2.What does the underlined word “shun” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Avoid. B.Tolerate.

C.Experience. D.Complain.

3.What made the amusement parks fully developed?

A.The Industrial Revolution. B.More time and money for fun.

C.Advances in technology. D.Development of the world’s fairs.

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Bakken was originally opened in 1583 in London.

B.The Crystal Palace is the oldest amusement park in the world.

C.The Kiddie Park located in San Antonio is still open at present.

D.The Bartholomew Fair was seen as economic and industrial success.

A few years ago, a doctor gave a wrong prescription to a 9-year-old boy because he had accidentally clicked the next medicine listed in the drop-down menu. Unfortunately, the boy died.

Dr. Gidi Stein heard the story and felt forced to do something. “It was like killing someone with a spelling error. He just clicked on the wrong button,” Stein said. “One would have thought there’d be some kind of spell-checker to prevent these terrible things from happening. But apparently this is not the case.”

Several things were immediately obvious to the 54-year-old Stein, who had previously studied computer science. “If you look at this problem from a bird’s eye view, there were so many places down the line where this decision could have been stopped — from the physician to the pharmacy (药房) even to the mother. All of them had all the relevant information to have a judgment call that this was just the wrong drug for the wrong patient.” For Stein, it represented a systemic failure.

Stein compared this with credit cards. “If you use your credit card in the daily routine over time, a pattern of how we use our cards comes out: the grocery store, the gas station in our local town. If your credit card would appear tomorrow in Zimbabwe, it would be unusual. The credit card company would call you and say, ‘Hey, was that you?’”

But nothing like that existed in the field of prescription drugs. So Stein set up a company called MedAware. He came up with a machine learning outlier detection (异常检测值) system. In other words, he trained the computers to realize if a doctor accidentally prescribed the wrong medicine.

The system is already used in hospitals and doctor’s offices. To date, MedAware has used their technology to help nearly six million patients in the United States and Israel.

1.What led to the boy’s death?

The first person I met in my high school was my deskmate, with that I fell in love at first sight.

She was warm-hearted and always wore a honest smile on her face. I was homesick in the first few days, unable to adjust the new school. It was with her help which I got familiar with the school. However, what impressed me most was her diligence and determine. When faced with a challenge in study, she would try out her best to solve it. Whenever I was in trouble, she would encourage myself and help me out. But for her encouragement, I wouldn’t have progressed so fast and steady.

Helicopter parenting refers to a style of parents who are over focused on their children.

1. For example, it can increase feelings of love and acceptance. However, helicopter parenting may be harmful to children’s development in the following ways.

Decreased confidence and selfesteem (自尊).The message the parents’ overinvolvement sends to kids is “my parents don’t trust me to do this on my own”.2.

Increased anxiety.A study from the University of Mary Washington has shown that overparenting is associated with higher levels of child anxiety and depression.

Undeveloped problemsolving skills. If parents are always there to clean up a child’s mess or prevent the problem in the first place, how does the child ever learn to deal with loss, disappointment, or failure?3.

Strengthened sense of entitlement (权利).Children who have always had their social, academic, and athletic lives adjusted by their parents to best fit their needs can become accustomed to always having their way and thus they develop a sense of entitlement.

4. Parents who always tie shoes, clear plates, and pack lunches, even after children are able to do the tasks, prevent their children from mastering these life skills themselves.

So, parents should let children struggle, allow them to be disappointed, and when failure occurs, help them to work through it.5. Remember: taking one step back from solving children’s problems will help build the independent, and selfconfident kids.

A.Weakened life skills.

B.Damaged life experiences.

C.And this distrust leads to a lack of confidence.

D.Helicopter parenting has many benefits for children.

E.Parents should also let children do tasks they are physically and mentally able to do.

F.Making your 3yearold’s bed sounds reasonable, while making your 13yearold’s bed doesn’t.

G.Studies found helicopter parenting can make children feel less able in dealing with the stresses of life on their own.

Riding on an exercise bike at home may keep you in physical shape, but it can get pretty boring after a while. Aaron Puzey had been on his exercise bike for half an hour a day for years when he decided to look for a way to make it a bit more fun.

With virtual reality technology widely available nowadays, all he needed to do was find a way of applying it to his needs. So he set out to build an app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR headset(头戴式视图器) which would allow him to hook it up to Google Street view and make it seem like he's cycling through different real-life locations.

Building the app to download the 3D data from Street View and make it viewable in the VR headset was the toughest part of his project. Other than that, all he needed to do was tape a Bluetooth monitor to his exercise bike. Although the quality of the images sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, leaving complex scenes like trees looking like a mess, Aaron has been having a lot of fun on his journey.

Aaron's project is obviously no substitute(替代品) for real outdoor cycling as it lacks things like the wind blowing in your face or the pain of battling an uphill climb, but it has given him a goal, as well as the chance to take in the beauty of places he might have otherwise never seen. It definitely beats staring at a wall or at the TV for 30 minutes, anyway.

Obviously, Aaron's set up the officially allows him to ride a bike anywhere around the world. He says he has always wanted to see Japan, so once his ride comes to an end, he plans to start another one across the Land of the Rising Sun.

1.Why did Aaron Puzey build the app?

A.To invent a new kind of bicycle B.To participate in a competition.

C.To satisfy the needs of the public. D.To add fun to his exercise bike routine

2.Which of the following can best describe Aaron Puxey?

A.Creative. B.Ambitious.

C.Funny. D.Boring.

3.What was the challenge for Puzey in his project?

A.Changing the 3D data into pictures.

B.Downloading the software from the Internet.

C.Making the 3D data viewable in the headset.

D.Taping a Bluetooth monitor lo his exercise bike.

4.What might be the best title for the text?

A.Cycling Across the World at Home

B.The Lazy Man and His Crazy Idea

C.A New Way of Cycling Without Effort

D.A Substitute for Real Outdoor Cycling

From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, you can feel sweat running down your body, even if you' re barely moving at all. That's what most people in China felt like this summer. In fact, the entire northern hemisphere(半球)saw high temperatures in July.

The Arctic Circle was no exception(例外). Temperatures in the city of Norilsk, which is in the Arctic Circle, reached a record high of 32 ℃, The Atlantic reported. Temperatures there are usually just 10 ℃ at this time of the year.

The heat wave in the Arctic is mainly a long-term result of global warming, according to the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. In fact, while the whole world is getting warmer, the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. This is called the polar amplification effect (极地放大效应).

The most direct impact of Arctic warming is the melting of Arctic ice. According to NASA, Arctic sea ice is now disappearing at a rate of 13.2 percent every 10 years. NASA said that if this continues, the Arctic will have no ice by the year 2040.

This has put some Arctic animals, like polar bears, in danger. The ice that the bears live on has shrunk(缩小), the Toronto Star reported.

Melting ice can also cause sea levels to rise in the long term. Since 1993, sea levels have risen at a rate of 3.2 cm every 10 years, the Guardian reported. Some countries, such as Tuvalu(图瓦鲁) in the South Pacific Ocean and Maldives(马尔代夫) in the Indian Ocean, are at risk of disappearing into the sea.

2.What does the underlined word "this" in the third paragraph refer to?

A.The heat wave in the Arctic.

B.The result of global warming.

D.There will be no ice in the world by 2040.

4.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Heat hits Arctic.

B.Arctic animals are in danger.

C.The world became hotter than before.

D.Some countries may disappear into the sea.

Stan Lee, co-founder of the Marvel Universe(漫威宇宙) and co-creator of many of its most popular superheroes, died at the age of 95.

Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1992.  As a son of working-class Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby single-bedroom apartment. After graduating from high school at 16, Lieber landed a job as an assistant at Timely Comics. By the early 1940s, he was a temporary editor for the company. It was at this time that he began using his pen name--Stan Lee. In 1947, two years after returning from serving for the U.S. Army, Lee married his wife, Joan. The two began their 70-year marriage and had two children.

In the late 1950s, DC Comics breathed new life into its classic superhero and experienced a significant success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with super-team the Justice League(正义联盟) of America.

To compete against DC Comics, Lee was given the task of creating their own group of superheroes. In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics, and that November saw the debut(首次亮相) of the Fantastic Four. Lee’s later famous and lasting creations of comic-book superheroes included Spider-Man, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and the X-men.

Over the course of his career, Lee was an icon of Marvel Comics. As a writer and editor and, at various points, both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics, Lee not only introduced interesting characters to the industry, but changed the way that comic books came together. He also created a cooperative workflow between writers and artists, which became known as the “Marvel Method”. Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008 for his innovations that revolutionized (=completely changed) American comic books.

Talking to yourself may seem a little shameful. According to the well-known saying, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness, 1. Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thought.

Far from being mentally ill, self-talk allows us to plan what we are going to do, manage our activities, regulate our emotions and even create a description of our experience.2.

As children, according to the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others.3. Psychological experiments have shown that the private speech can improve our performance on tasks ranging from judging what other people are thinking to sorting images into categories. One recent study suggested that self-talk is most effective when we address ourselves in the second person, as “you” rather than “I”.

4. If you want proof, turn on the sports channel. You’re certain to see an athlete or two cheering themselves up with a bitter phrase or scolding themselves after a bad shot.

Conduct a dialogue with ourselves.5. The private speech seems to be a particularly good way of solving problems and working through ideas. The to-and-fro between different points of view means our thoughts can end up in expected places, just like a regular dialogue can, and might turn out to be one of the keys lo human creativity.

A.What is private speech?

B.Bui there is no need for embarrassment.

C.Psychologists refer to this as private speech.

D.Ask questions of the self and provide answers.

E.We do a lot of private speech when we are young.

F.As we grow older, we make the private speech become the way of blinking,

G.Although the private speech is effective, we never entirely put away the out-loud speech.
