Years ago, all my parents were involved in a serious car accidents. Uncle Bob took on the role as a father to him. I lived with him during that period. He allowed me stay with him though his home was not really bigger. He showed his care and love for me by pay attention to my health, education and what I needed at that time. I really appreciated the time he spent with me. We used to go on the trips together. We would just spend days either playing our guitars and reading our favorite car magazines. I always felt gratefully towards him. He was like a father figure who will always give me encouragement.

Natural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain characteristics that make it more likely to live than others in its group. The history of the peppered moth(灰蛾)is an example of the natural selection process.

In 19th century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to better blend(融合)into their surroundings. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundred or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively quickly.

At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. Because the light-colored moths blended into the light-colored bark on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot(烟煤)and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to being mostly dark-colored.

In the 20th century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree trunks lighted due to less soot in the air, light-colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels declined. Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.

1.In 19th century, what was one of the causes of great changes in Great Britain?

A.The surroundings. B.The Industrial Revolution.

C.The natural selection. D.The peppered moth.

2.What can we infer about the peppered moth’s natural selection process?

A.The length of time was unusual.

B.The soot levels in England did not affect it.

C.The color of peppered moths changed at random.

D.It was a good example of environmental protection.

3.What’s the difference between light-colored and dark-colored moths?

A.Dark-colored moths were originally easy to see on trees.

B.Both kinds of moths preferred the dark-colored trees.

C.Birds failed to see light-colored moths.

D.The color of moths was unimportant.

4.Which would most likely happen if soot darkened England’s trees again?

A.Birds would eat fewer moths.

B.Moths would not be able to stay alive.

C.Light-colored moths would disturb people’s life.

D.The population of dark-colored moths would increase.

What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the entrance? Or the soft background music?

But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.

A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent.

When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.

Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.

Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

1.According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?

A.Friendly assistant. B.Unique scents.

C.Soft background music. D.Attractive window display.

2.E-shops are mentioned in the passage to ______.

A.show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores

B.urge shop assistants to change their attitude

C.push stores to use sights and sounds

D.introduce the rise of e-commerce

3.The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means ______.

A.a platform that exhibits goods

B.a spot where travelers like to stay

C.a place where customers love to go

D.a target that a store expects to meet

4.The main purpose of the passage is to ______.

A.compare and evaluate B.examine and assess

C.argue and discuss D.inform and explain

Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.

Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.

I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickersabout Cowboy’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.

When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.

The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena. We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.

As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!

I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

1.The underlined expression “shown the gate” (paragraph 4) most probably means “_________”.

A.told how to enter the arena B.shown how to make the horse beautiful

C.removed from the competition early D.told to enter the timed-speed events

2.Why was the writer not confident of victory?

A.He was an inexperienced rider.

B.He believed he was unpopular with the crowd.

C.He had not practiced enough.

D.He thought his horse wasn’t as good as the others.

3.What did the writer learn from his experience?

A.Life can sometimes be unfair.

B.Anything is possible if one tries hard enough.

C.A positive attitude will bring success.

D.One should not make judgments based on appearance.

4.The best title for the story is ________.

A.A Run to Remember B.A Horse’s Tale

C.Neck and Neck D.A Difficult Age

The editor of the new Cool Camping Britain guide chooses some of his favorite new finds in England, Wales and Scotland.

Cleadale, Isle of Eigg, Inner Hebrides

Is this Britain’s most beautiful campsite? From the grassy point looking seaward to the mountains, it’s not hard for campers to see how the island inspired The Lord of the Rings author’s fantasy landscapes. The campsite itself is as wild and wonderful as its setting.

Open April — September, from 5 per tent per night.

Swattesfield, Thornham Magna, Suffolk

Deep in the wilds of north Suffolk, this seven-acre campsite has only been open for a few years, with two fields separated by a lake and surrounded by woodland. The position is perfect. Open Easter —October, from 10 per tent per night.

Pleasant Streams Farm, near St Austell, Cornwall

This site, by a lake, is all about simple pleasures. Located in the former mining village, it has a summerhouse(凉亭)with books and games for a rainy day.     Does your local high school have a student newspaper? Only 1 in 8 of New York’s public high schools has student newspapers – and many of those are published just a few times a year. A few more are online, which can leave out poorer schools.

Rebecca Dwarka, an 18-year-old senior who works for her student paper said, “Facebook is the new way of finding out what happened. Nobody wants to actually sit down and read a whole article about it. This makes a ‘whole article’ sound a little like a long sentence in lonely places.”

I am not nostalgic about high school student newspapers and never worked for mine. I put out what was then called a personal magazine with a group of friends because we wanted to write about peace, war and rock ’n’ roll without school officials warning us not to make jokes about the local officials.

School newspapers are in decline because students now find out what happened on social networking websites. This is a little discouraging because it proves that for millions of Americans, journalism is becoming a do-it-yourself thing. Every citizen can be a reporter.

When something happens, we look for social media messages. Facebook posts and Tweets have become the means by which citizens and reporters can prove, deny, pass on stories and express opinions without the press’ challenging, researching or slowing the message.

But truly good journalism is a craft, not just a blog post. It requires seeing something carefully and it uses an eye for details to help prove a larger view. And even journalism that conveys an opinion tries to be fair. If school newspapers begin to disappear, I hope there are other ways for students to learn that.

1.What can we infer from Rebecca’s words?

A.Students like reading detailed articles.

B.School newspapers are becoming unpopular.

C.Facebook is the quickest way of spreading news.

D.Long sentences are becoming popular in lonely places.

2.What does the author think of social media messages?

A.They make journalism become a craft.

B.They represent the power of small voices.

C.They are usually discouraging for readers.

D.They are coming without careful research.

3.What should good journalism do according to the author?

A.Ignore some details.

B.Spread a message quickly.

C.Convey an opinion in a fair way.

D.Act as blog posts in modern times.

4.Which might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A.Social media or newspapers?

B.Everyone can become a reporter at present

C.Social networking brings about new journalism

D.High school newspapers – an endangered species.

The end of the school year is in sight - Christmas cards candy canes and of course end of year reports

While most parents welcome an assessment of their kids' performance they do not expect their own input to be evaluated But a school in the UK is changing that As well as assessing their students they are dishing out grades to mums and dads Parents that are really involved in their kids' education are rewarded with an A and parents that haven't done their bit get a disappointing D

The school Greasley Beauvale Primary in Nottinghamshire uses standard such as whether mums and dads have attended school events such as plays and parent teacher evenings to decide on the grade The school's principal Donna Chambers said that the scheme had been well received

"There were some critics In spite of it between 15 percent and 20 percent of parents started out in the lower categories but now that has been reduced to just two per cent" she explained

Chambers hopes that the scheme will help motivate parental involvement "The system is important because you have got to get the parents on board from day one That one hour initial conversation saying they could improve will make a difference to the rest of that child's academic life" she said

But while the scheme may be well intentioned it is likely to be connected with parent shaming There are lots of reasons why some mums and dads might not be involved in school activities such as work commitments looking after younger children or caring for elderly relatives

And of course being involved in your kid's education doesn't begin and end at school There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes from helping with homework to keeping uniforms freshly laundered And what about all the parents who stayed up sewing special costumes at the last minute Surely that earns a gold star instead of a grade!

1.What do schools usually do at the end of the school year ______

A.Evaluating kids' performances

B.Making Christmas cards

C.Dividing candies

D.Grading parents

2.What does the school's principal Chambers say about the scheme ______

A.It uses a new way to evaluate kids

B.It has gained much acceptance

C.It gives parents further education

D.It improves kids' motivation for learning

3.What does the author think of parents being involved in kids' education ______

A.It adds to parents' burden

B.It brings shame to parents

C.It means far more than being graded

D.It increases parents' commitment to education

4.What is the passage mainly about ______

A.There is too much stress for parents about their children's academic life

B.Parents as well as their children are on the list of the year school report

C.Parents should be involved in children's school life

D.Whether a parent is excellent depends on the grade he gets

Just a couple of hours ago, I was on the plane, ready to fly home from London. The flight had been delayed by a few hours so it felt good to be so close to take-off. I had my iPod in place and a new book to read. Then, over the loudspeaker came the pilot’s voice: "The ground crew has found a metal instrument in one tire. We regret that we must cancel this flight."

The passengers’ reactions that announcement led to were interesting. One man close to me began to argue with a flight attendant. A couple in another row complained loudly. A businessman in a black suit actually kicked the seat in front of him. Yet some passengers responded differently. An elderly gentleman smiled as he helped others take their bags down from the overhead compartments (隔间). A teenager, rather than trying to rush off the plane like most of the other passengers, stopped to help a woman with a disability. The lady sitting next to me laughed and said: "Hey, it’s not the end of the world..." before she made a call to her kids and shared her adventure with them. The wisest among us have a remarkable ability to maintain grounded when times get tough.

No life is perfect mine certainly isn’t. We all must face challenges, both large and small. You and I have the power to choose to rise above the external circumstances. We always have the choice to be strong and kind when things fall apart.

That’s grace under pressure. My seatmate was right — things could have been so much worse. Anyway, I am safe. I have my health. I have two wonderful children. I have work I love and so much to be grateful for. Sure I now have to wait a few hours to catch the next flight home.

1.What caused the passengers’ different reactions directly?

A.The loudspeaker. B.The delay of the flight.

2.Who turned his anger on the seat?

3.What did the woman sitting next to the author do?

A.She assisted a disabled woman.

B.She made a phone call to her family.

C.She helped others carry their luggage.

D.She told moving stories to her children.

4.What can we learn from the story?

A.Our life is full of ups and downs.

B.It is natural to be scared under pressure.

C.We should help each other in times of difficulty.

D.We should be positive and calm when life is hard.

I read an interesting story last week. One day, a diver is enjoying the sea 20 feet below its surface. He noticed a man at same depth, but without any equipments. The diver went below other 20 feet, and the man joined in him a few minutes later. She went below 20 feet again, and after several minutes, the man following him again. This confused the diver, but he took a blackboard out and wrote, “How on earth are you able to stay this deep with nothing to help you?” The man took the blackboard, rubbed that the diver had written and wrote, “I’m drowned, you fool!”

With the fast pace of modern society, more and more people choose to eat processed foods without exactly knowing the harm. According to the following information, let’s know more about the processed foods.

What’s so bad about processed foods?

Processed foods like chips, soda and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar and fat. 1. Obesity is a condition involving too much body fat. It increases the risk of many health problems.

2.

The researchers says processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives.

Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets are some examples of highly processed foods. But products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt belongs to this kind, too.

What’s wrong with processed foods?

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. 3. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed.

In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.

Why will you eat processed foods?

4. Especially, people have limited time and money. Choosing processed food can save time and it is delicious with some additive things in it.

The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He told the AP that processed foods are usually “softer and easier to chew and swallow”.

5.

A.What do processed foods mean?

B.Avoid processed foods can be hard.

C.It’s no good for you to choose processed foods.

D.What’s the disadvantage of the processed foods?

E.The above reasons can account for the harm of processed food clearly.

F.Scientists have already linked packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world.

G.They found people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods.

Scientists blame greenhouse gases for being a major cause of climate change around the world. This is because greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere and make the planet warmer.

Now, a team of researchers has announced a successful experiment that turned carbon dioxide into useful liquid fuel. The researchers created a device, called a reactor, which changes bon dioxide into a pure form of formic acid(甲酸). Formic acid is a substance (物质) found in ants and some other insects, as well as in many plants. It is used as an antibacterial material and in the processing of some kinds of clothing.

Haotian Wang led the research team. He said in a statement that the results of the experiment were important because formic acid is a major carrier of energy. So, the substance can provide a way to reuse carbon dioxide and prevent it from being released into the atmosphere. “It’s a fuel-cell fuel that can generate electricity and send out carbon dioxide which you can grab and recycle again,” Wang said.

“Other methods for turning carbon dioxide into formic acid require intense purification processes,” Wang said. Such methods are very costly and require a lot of energy. The Rice University team said it was able to reduce the number of steps in the traditional process to create a low-cost, energy-saving method.

The researchers reported the reactor device performed with a conversion rate (转化率) of 42 percent. This means that nearly half of the electrical energy can be stored in formic acid as liquid fuel. The team said the reactor was able to create formic acid continuously for 100 hours with little degradation (退化) of the device’s parts.

Wang said the reactor could easily be used to produce other high-value products, including alcohol-based fuels. The researchers noted that the technology could also be a big help in solving another major energy problem—how to store large amounts of power in small places.

1.What factor is the main cause of climate change?

A.Greenhouse gases. B.Chemistry waste.

C.Formic acid. D.Liquid fuel.

2.What do we know about formic acid?

A.It is a large amount of power. B.It can be found in ants.

C.It is high- value equipment. D.It is a substance in clothing.

3.What is Wang’s attitude towards his own research?

A.Doubtful. B.Aggressive.

C.Optimistic. D.Uncaring.

4.In what magazine can you read this text?

A.A travel magazine. B.A sports magazine.

C.A music magazine. D.A science magazine.

Australia and New Zealand’s health organizations have given their advice on when to use sunscreen (防晒霜), suggesting Australians apply it every day to avoid bad health effects.

A Sunscreen Summit took place in the Australian State of Queensland. During the summit, representatives from some of Australia’s leading research, medical and public health organizations examined the evidence on sunscreen use and determined that in most parts of the country it is beneficial to apply sunscreen every day.

“Up until now, public health organizations have recommended applying sunscreen ahead of planned outdoor activities but haven t recommended applying it every day as part of a morning routine (惯例),” professor Rachel Neale from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute said. “In recent years, it has become clear that the DNA damage causes skin cancer and melanoma(黑色素瘤), which is caused by repeated small exposure to sunlight over a period of time,” Neale said. “In Australia, we get a lot of sun exposure from everyday activities such as alking to the bus stop or train station,” Neale said.

A study showed that one in two Australians believed it was unhealthy and potentially dangerous to use sunscreen every day. However, Terry Slevin from the Public Health Association of Australia says it is wrong. “There is consistent and compelling evidence that sunscreens are safe,” Slevin said. “Importantly, medical trials have found that people who use sunscreen daily have the same levels of vitamin d as those who don’t,” Slevin added.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world which is made worse by the country’s close to Antarctica where there is a hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层), letting in higher numbers of UV rays.

1.What made Australian health organizations advise Australians to use sunscreen?

A.The makers of sunscreen.

B.Australian government.

C.The Sunscreen Summit.

D.New Zealand’s researchers.

2.What is not recommended before the Sunscreen Summit?

A.Using sunscreen before outdoor activities.

B.Using sunscreen as a morning routine.

C.Reducing the use of sunscreen.

D.Reducing outdoor activities.

3.What is the misunderstanding of many Australians?

A.People using sunscreen won’t have skin cancer.

B.Sunscreen will never take effect.

C.People using sunscreen have the same levels of vitamin

D.D. Sunscreen is bad for people’s health.

4.Which of the following best explains “compelling” underlined in paragraph 4?

A.Interesting. B.Disappointing.

C.Boring. D.Convincing.

When Faith Wanjiku graduated from the Technical University of Kenya last year, she immediately enrolled (注册) at the Confucius Institute in Kenyatta University. She wanted to learn Chinese, as she believed that it would help her land a good job.

She has just completed the hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) 3 exam. HSK is a test of Chinese language level for non-native speakers, organized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

However, this level isn’t enough for Wanjiku, who plans to pass HSK 6. She wanted to increase her level of Chinese and improve her spoken Chinese. And Wanjiku isn’t alone. The number of people taking the HSK reached 6.8 million in 2018 and went up 4.6 percent from a year earlier, the Ministry of Education said on May 31.

Chinese is becoming an increasingly popular choice of language to study around the world. Currently, middle school students in Russia can take Chinese as an elective language test in the country’s national college entrance exam, Sputnik News reported.

In May, Zambia became the fourth country in Africa-after Kenya, Uganda and South Africa—to introduce Chinese language to its schools.

And many English-speaking countries have shown an interest in allowing their students to learn Chinese. The US government announced the launch of “1 Million Strong” in 2015, a plan that aims to bring the total number of learners of Chinese to l million by 2020.

Behind the growing popularity of Chinese language learning is the international community’s positive attitude toward Chinas future development, as well as the people’s longing to learn about Chinese civilization and culture.

Indeed, it’s as the former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela put it, “if you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

1.What did Wanjiku do after graduating from university?

A.She went abroad. B.She learned Chinese.

C.She found a job. D.She travelled to China.

2.HSK is a test for ______.

A.non-native speakers B.native speakers

C.middle school students D.college students

3.What does the underlined sentence mean?

A.Wangjiku has lots of friends.

B.Lots of people want to pass HSK6 exam.

C.Wangjiku has passed HSK3 exam.

D.Many people want to live in China.

4.What may be the best title for the text?

A.Chinese Language Study Takes Off

B.Chinese Play an Important Role in Economy

C.People Share the Experience of Learning Chinese

D.Different Opinions about the Function of Chinese

When I was a teenager, I got lost in a foreign country. I was in Berlin, Germany, only month-long trip in Europe. My team and I had one night there to spend however we pleased. Most of my teammates decided to stay indoors and relax. But I did not want to pass up the chance to explore Berlin.

I visited lots of major attractions around the city that night. When the exhaustion began to set in, I checked the time on my watch. I was surprised to see that it was two o’clock in the morning.

As I walked to a subway station, I realized that it was my dad’s birthday. This would be the first birthday I couldn’t celebrate with him because he died a few months earlier. Before I could begin thinking of my dad, I heard train wheels stop.

I rushed onto the train. At first, I was thankful to have made it onto the train. But that joy quickly turned to panic when I noticed that the train was heading in the wrong direction!

I looked around the nearly empty train. I saw a young woman sitting quietly by the window and approached her.

“Hi, do you speak English? I’m lost. Can you help me?” I asked.

The woman understood. She told me how to return to where I had first gotten on the train. But my anxious mind couldn’t follow her guidance.

Without thinking, I asked, “Can you come with me?”

Her face froze at my stupid request. After a long second of hesitation, she agreed to help me. At that moment, I was grateful for the kindness from a stranger.
