Teaching the true meaning of the holidays

While parents are focusing on this all year round, the holidays are a major built-in opportunity for parents to help children develop character and values. Receiving gifts has no long-term effect on a child’s development, but contributing to others and learning about giving and selflessness does. 1.

Show historical significance

It’s important to help children understand the history of the holidays their own family celebrate. Read fiction or non-fiction books about the holidays and visit places where holidays are celebrated in different days. 2.

Encourage thoughtful planning

When preparing for the holidays, involve your child in the act of cooking or buying gifts. 3. Work together to choose special gifts for family members and ask your child to think about what would make each person happy. These skills encourage children to be thoughtful. These skills are best developed through experience rather than being told to be polite or thoughtful.

Get crafts with giving

Find ways for your child to give back to teach the true meaning of holiday giving. Suggest that each child get a toy by donating toys to those in need. 4. Consider participating in a service project or obtaining a “Crafts with Kindness” kit from the Bright Horizons Foundation for children that includes craft activities, and do-it-yourself cards.

Set an example

5. Set an example by allowing your child to see you perform acts of kindness, join in spiritual service or give back to local organizations.

A.Share and create traditions.

B.They are giving and getting all at the same time.

C.So it is time to teach children the true meaning of the holidays.

D.Classics can inspire your child to think about the true meaning of the holidays.

E.Ask your child to make a list of people who devote their lives to helping others.

F.Help them make connections between the values of the holidays and their actions.

G.Parents are the role models who can teach children the true meaning of the holidays.

Can you believe everything that you read? It seems as if every day, some new articles come out about a new discovery about this or that. For example, water is bad for you, or good for you. The answer depends on which scientific study has just come out. People cannot decide which food items are healthy, how pyramids were constructed, and why dinosaurs disappeared. When we look for answers we sometimes can believe persuasive researches and scientists. But how trustworthy are they really? Here are two examples of scientific hoaxes (骗局).

As far back as 1726, Johann Beringer was fooled by his fellow scientists into thinking he had made an amazing discovery. The fossils of spiders, lizards, and even birds with the name of God written on them in Hebrew were unlike anything that had been found before. He wrote several papers on them and was famous for those only to have it revealed that they were planted by jealous colleagues to ruin his reputation.

When an early human being was discovered in 1912, scientists at this time were wild with excitement over the meaning it had for the theory of evolution. There were hundreds of papers about this Piltdown man over the next fifty years until it was finally discovered to be a complex hoax. The skull (头骨) of a man had been mixed with the jawbone of an orangutan (猩猩) to make the ape () man.

The next time you read the exciting new findings of a study of the best scientist, do not automatically assume that it is true. Even qualified people can get it wrong. Though we certainly should not ignore scientific research, we do need to take it with a grain of salt. Just because it is accepted as the truth today does not mean it will still be trustworthy tomorrow.

1.What is the reason why Johann Beringer was fooled?

A.His fellow scientists wanted to make fun of him.

B.His workmates are eager to become famous too.

C.These scientists made a mistake because of carelessness.

D.His colleagues was jealous of him and did so to destroy his fame.

2.The excited scientists thought that this Piltdown man ________.

A.was in fact a complex hoax

B.was a great scientific invention

C.contributed to the theory of evolution

D.had the skull like that of an ape

3.What does the underlined phrase “with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Happily. B.Generally.

C.Doubtfully. D.Completely.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Hebrew is probably a kind of language.

B.Truths of science will never be out of time.

C.People believe scientists because they are persuasive.

D.We are advised to believe famous scientists.

We once had a poster competition in our fifth-grade art class.

“You could win prizes,” our teacher told us as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing, “The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster.”

We studied the board critically. Some of us looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the right or left while we conjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten-dollar grand prize, each and every one of us. I’m going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich.

Everyone in the class made a poster. Some of us used parts of those fancy paper napkins, while others used nothing but colored construction paper. Some of us used big designs, and some of us preferred to gather our art tidily down in one corner of our poster and let the space draw the viewer’s attention to it. Some of us would wander past the good students’ desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness. It was yet another grown-up trick of the sort they seemed especially fond of, making all of us believe we had a fair chance, and then always—always—rewarding the same old winners.

I believe I drew a sailboat, but I can’t say that with any certainty. I made it. I admired it. I determined it to be the very best of all of the posters I had seen, and then I turned it in.

Minutes passed.

No one came along to give me the grand prize, and then someone distracted me, and I probably never would have thought about that poster again.

I was still sitting at my desk, thinking, what poster? When the teacher gave me an envelope with a ten-dollar bill in it and everyone in the class applauded for me.

1.What was the teacher’s requirement for the poster?

A.It must appear in time. B.It must be done in class.

C.It must be done on a construction sheet. D.It must include the words on the blackboard.

2.The underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.

A.formed an idea for B.made an outline for

C.made some space for D.chose some colors for

3.We can infer from the passage that the author ________.

A.enjoyed grown up tricks very much B.loved poster competitions very much

C.felt surprised to win the competition D.became wise and rich after the competition

MEMORANDUM (备忘录)

To: All members of the sales department

From: Annette Derringer

Re: Year-end party

Date: November 26

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is just a quick note to let you all know the arrangements for next month’s year-end party. As you know, the party will be held at the Green Vale Country Club, which we have reserved between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the evening of December 21st. I’ve received replies from almost all of you confirming attendance, but if you haven’t let me know yet, please do so in the next day or two. Tickets for all employees have been covered by the company.

The Green Vale manager has asked me to explain one or two things to those of you who have not been there before. Basically, there is sufficient parking space for only 100 vehicles, so they would like to ask those of you planning to drive, try to car-pool as much as possible. Also, the number of lockers available is small, so guests should try to keep belongings to a minimum.

Thanks in advance.

Annette

Subject: Year-end party

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Annette,

This is to let you know that I will be able to attend the year-end party at the Green Vale Country Club on the 21st although I don’t think I will be able to arrive before 8:30. I was wondering if it would also be possible to bring a couple of guests. I know it is a bit of a last minute request, but my brother and his wife are planning to visit us at that time, and I know they’d love to see the Green Vale. If it is not a problem, then can you let me know how much I should pay for their tickets? Also, assuming this is OK, I was planning to drive down in a single car, to reduce the need for parking and also to allow us to keep our belongings in the car.

I have a couple of days off before the party, but I’ll be in my office until the 17th, so could you get back to me before then? Thanks a lot,

Kyle

Among all the counties in the word, there is one country which has the best secondary education systemFinland. 1. Here are some possible reasons.

Most teachers are well educated. They are professionals who have been selected from the top 10% of the nation's graduates. In order to teach, they need a master's degree in education. Teachers also have a lot of respect and status in Finland.

2. They often work closely with the university that's closest to their school, They also have fewer teaching hours than any other school system in the world, which gives them more time to reflect on their teaching methods.

Teachers have a great deal of freedom Even though there 's a national curriculum that says what children should learn. all teachers are free to decide how and when they teach it. 3.

Students spend fewer hours in school than pupils in other western counties. 4. This makes it easy for teachers to monitor students' progress. There are also specialized assistants in the classroom to help the teacher. If a child is falling behind, the teaching staff create a plan to meet that child's personal needs. If a child is going really well, staff will pay attention to this too. 5. Clearly, a lot of factors decide how well students do in class. But Finland seems to have created the perfect system!

A.However, why is it so good?

B.Teachers get professional training constantly.

C.The relaxing atmosphere at school is important.

D.There are not more than 20 students in each class

E.Nearly 30%6 of Finland's children receive the special help.

F.Children usually can finish their homework within half an hour.

G.Teachers also arrange their own lessons and choose the textbooks for the class

After Bernini broke his neck and lost all movements below his shoulders when he was 18, his brain still told his hands how to move - - but the message couldn't get through the injured part that connects his brain to other parts of his body. Now, thanks to recent advances in electrical stimulation (刺激) technology. Bernini can once again grasp, pour, and even play Guitar Hero. To do so, he uses a micro-electrode array (MEA) that reads his brain's signals and sends them through wires to something like a sleeve on his arm that electronically stimulates his muscles.

In the past years, researchers have used several approaches to guide patients like Bernini to move their hands. In some systems, researchers implanted (植人)sensors in shoulder muscles that patients could still control, allowing them to move one hand by contracting muscles in the opposite shoulder. Other systems use brain implants similar to those in the new study, but to control robotic arms, rather than the patient’s own muscles. But never before has a patient been able to precisely move his hand using the same neural (神经的)signals that controlled his hand before his injury.

After implanting the MEA in Bernini 's brain, researchers connected it to a computer. Bernini trained the system to connect patterns of neural signals to specific movements by repeatedly mirroring the movements of an imaginary hand on a computer screen. Soon, Bernini could hold large objects like glasses and lift small objects like straws. He could also move each finger on his own just by thinking about it, which previous systems had never achieved. And it was absolutely an amazing moment.

1.How is Bernini now?

A.He does well in playing the guitar.

B.He has recovered from his neck injury.

C.His thoughts can control his hand movements.

D.His shoulder muscles guide his hand movement.

2.What did researchers want to do through brain implants in the past?

A.Control the patients' hands.

B.Guide robots to help patients.

C.Help patients' own muscles contract.

D.Repair patients' injured neural signals.

3.What's the breakthrough in Bernini 's case compared with previous studies?

A.He can hold and lift objects.

B.He can move each finger independently.

C.He can recognize his specific movements.

D.He can use neural signals for hand moving.

4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Moving Hands by Contracting Muscles.

B.Using New Systems for Muscle Injuries.

C.Sending Neural Signals by Wires.

D.Linking thoughts to Movements.

The famous British writer Charles Dickens, who penned the letter that led the signatures of resistance to street music in 1864, would be pleased to hear that, to be a busker (街头艺人) in London today, one must pass a strict "interview" first. Each busker must go through a shortlist process and then perform live in one of underground stations in front of three judges. Each musician must perform two songs (one prepared by themselves and the other selected by judges from a submitted set list). The judging process reviews the musician's songs, musicality, technique skill and performance. If successful, the musician will receive a 12 - month license to perform in the street. Last year, more than 600 musicians attended the "interview" and only 70 got license.

The method of tipping buskers is changing. London is the first city in the world to introduce the electronic payment system (EPS). London mayor (市长) Sadiq Khan described London as “a powerhouse of music". “For London to keep its status as a global capital of music, it's vitally important that we support the stars of tomorrow," Khan said. "Busking helps them show their talent and gives them the chance to perform in front of huge numbers of people. The new method means more people will now be able to show their support for the capital city s many street performers because it's more convenient for them to do so."

Charlotte Campbell is one such busker who' s been helping to trial the project. After only two weeks, she said it had “already had a significant effect on the contributions I've received." She's noticed when one person taps the reader to donate, others who witness the act often follow suit, suggesting people are more than willing to adopt the new way of rewarding buskers.

1.What was Charles Dickens' attitude towards street music in London?

A.Favorable. B.Disapproving. C.Optimistic. D.Cautious.

2.What is the 1st paragraph mainly about?

A.The long history of street music. B.The way of playing street music.

C.The buskers ' competition to get a license. D.The introduction of buskers in London.

3.Why did London mayor promote the new scheme?

A.To make more people help the buskers. B.To show London is full of buskers.

C.To catch up with modern art trends. D.To reform street music s performance.

4.How did London people respond to the EPS according to Charlotte Campbell?

A.They were opposed to it. B.They accepted it quickly.

C.They paid no attention to it. D.They thought it made no difference.

I am Tony, a volunteer stem cell courier. Since March 2019, I have done 99 trips——of those, 56 have been abroad. I have 42 hours to carry stem cells in my little box because I've got two ice packs and that's how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor to the time they can be implanted (移植) in the patient, we've got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.

Last year, I had a trip where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check -in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: "Well, I'm really sorry, but I've got some bad news for you - there are no flights to Washington." So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: "In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient- please, please, you've got to get me back to the United Kingdom." She just dropped everything. She arranged for a fight on a small plane to be held for me, rerouted (改道) me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.

For this courier job, I' m consciously aware that in that box I've got something that is potentially going to save someone’s life.

1.What does the underlined word "courier" mean in paragraph !?

A.provider. B.collector. C.delivery man. D.medical doctor.

2.Why does Tony have to complete his trip within 42 hours?

A.The operation needs that much time.

B.The donor can only wait for that long.

C.He can't stay away from his job too long.

D.The ice can only last such a period of time.

3.Why did the woman arrange a new flight for Tony?

A.To help save a patient. B.To avoid being hit by Tony.

C.To get the stem cell. D.To drop everything.

4.What does the author think of his job?

A.Tiresome. B.Interesting. C.Meaningless. D.Significant.

There are some Christmas traditions between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Letters to Santa Claus

In the United States, kids usually write letters to Santa and put them in the mailbox. However, in England we throw them directly into the fire. We don't plan to make kids cry because burning the letters can send them to the North Pole where Santa can read your Christmas wishes in the smoke. It may seem strange but it does save on postage.

Hanging stocking

Traditionally, American kids hang stockings around the fireplace for Santa to fill with presents. But in the UK. we hang stockings around the bed; being surrounded by presents is a fantastic way to wake up on Christmas morning.

Christmas pudding

Americans prefer to have pumpkin and pecan pies for the Christmas dessert; while we British are fond of Christmas pudding. which is a cake flavored with dried fruits and spices.

Dealing with Christmas tree

We British chose to take down the Christmas trees and the decorations within 12 days of Christmas, because we hold the belief that keeping then beyond that time can bring bad luck. This is probably a tradition that Americans should consider adopting. I have seen people keep their old, brown, dry and withered Christmas trees until almost July 4.

1.How do the British people deal with "Letters to Father Christmas"?

A.Emailing them to Santa. B.Hiding them in the mailbox.

C.Putting them in the stockings. D.Throwing them straight into the fire.

2.Why do the British take down the Christmas tree as early as possible?

A.To stop it from drying B.To expect good luck.

C.To save money. D.To reuse it for the next year.

3.What do Christmas traditions between Britain and America have in common?

A.Writing letters to Santa. B.Making pumpkin pudding.

C.Hanging stockings around the bed. D.Keeping Christmas trees for months.

Our world is more connected than ever before thanks to technology.1.. Indeed, it is becoming increasingly important that we all learn how to deal with this painful feeling.

You should be determined to actively end your loneliness. We often end up passively waiting for someone else to make us feel less lonely. You may feel that your loneliness indicates that nobody is willing to connect with you. And there is nothing you can do about it. But that is far from the truth.2..

You should find reasons why you are lonely.  We all feel lonely for different reasons. Some of us have no one else to interact(互动) with on a consistent basis and that's why we feel lonely. You may feel that the people in your life don't share your thoughts and ideas.3., you need to identify it. And you know exactly how to handle your loneliness.

4.. People who are lonely tend to fall into destructive mental habits. They try to avoid the pain of not being understood and being disconnected by not giving people any chance to understand and connect with them. That's not what you should choose to do. Instead, you should share your thoughts and feelings with others and do so openly and fearlessly.

You should find people who share your interests. 5., everybody is interested in something. And just as there are many interests, there are many people who share those interests. Find what interests you and connect with others on that basis.

A.Whatever the reason is

B.Whether it's coin collecting or video games

C.If you have no reason to share your interests

D.You should be true to yourself or actively end loneliness

E.You should be open about your thoughts, ideas and desires

F.Ending loneliness is something that you can and should do actively

G.However, more and more of us find ourselves having to stand loneliness

It seems we're always being told to get more sleep. Studies suggest spending less time on sleep can lead to obesity(肥胖) and even cancer. You might even find yourself with a head full of false memories. But rarely does science explore the dark side of sleeping too much. That's because few of us in today's busy world have the luck of exploring that option.

In an August 2018 study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers researched the sleep patterns of those“fortunate”few and found they may not be so lucky after all. In fact, they found people who get more than eight hours of sleep have greater health risk compared to those who sleep together less than seven hours. What's more, sleep-aholics-those who manage to get 10 hours a night-stand a 30 percent higher chance of dying compared to the seven-hour crowd.

The wide-ranging global study involved(涉及) more than three million people who self-reported on their sleep habits and came to an eye-opening conclusion: If you tend to sleep a lot, you may want to buy an alarm clock. As with all things in life, sleep is best taken in moderation(适度).

You may be thinking: What if I only sleep in on Saturday and Sunday, am I still at risk? The answer is yes, according to a 2019 study published in Current Biology.  Researchers discovered that even if a person sleeps more  than seven hours on the weekends but still sleeps less than that on weeknights, they are at risk of gaining weight  and developing sensitivity to insulin, which controls the level of sugar in blood.

For the study, 36 participants were divided into three groups that each had a different sleep schedule: nine  hours every night, five hours every night, and five hours from Monday to Friday and sleeping much on  weekends. People who get too much sleep tend to feel tired and lack energy. Also, both sleep-deprived(睡眠不足的) groups consume more food and gain weight.

1.Why is the harmful effect of sleeping too much seldom studied?

A.Few people have time to sleep too much. B.Lack of sleep causes much more harm.

C.It turns out to be a healthy sleep pattern. D.People's health has nothing to do with it.

2.What does the underlined words "those 'fortunate' few" in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Those leading a relaxing life. B.Those getting too much sleep.

C.Those with less time to sleep. D.Those with no sleep problems.

3.What can be learned from the 2019 study?

A.Sleeping much is particularly beneficial to hungry people.

B.Many people sleep more on weekends than on weekdays.

C.An alarm clock of high quality is important for good sleep.

D.People who sleep much only on weekends also have health risk.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.It is necessary to save enough time for sleep.

B.Too much sleep can result in gaining weight.

C.Sleeping too much does harm to people's health.

D.People can avoid sleeping much by eating healthily.

Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft, which has been transporting all astronauts to and from the International Space StationISSsince 2011, typically carries a crew of three. However, the MS-14 capsule launched(发射)from a Russian spaceport in southern Kazakhstan on August 22, 2019, had just one passenger—a human-like robot named Skybot F-850.

The robot is the latest version of Russia’s FEDOR robots, which were initially designed to help with search and rescue efforts. Skybot is good at many human skills, including driving a car, having short conversations, and even telling jokes. But since it lacks some special sills, the spacecraft to the ISS was piloted from the ground by scientists from Russia’s space Agency. Roscosmos.

The six-foot-tall, 350-pound robot had another important task while on board. Without risking the lives of human astronauts, it helped Roscosmos researchers test the safety and flight experience of the new Soyuz-2.1, a carrier rocket, which carried the spacecraft into orbit. The feedback(反馈)will be important in determining if the rocket is safe to transport future human crews to space.

Though the launch into orbit went smoothly, Skybot’s arrival at the ISS was delayed by three days, from August 24 to August 27. The delay didn’t seem to bother the robot, which announced its arrival, “Sorry about the delay. Met with traffic. Ready to work now.”

Skybot’s two-week task is largely a test to measure its ability to work effectively in microgravity, and includes simple tasks like using tools. If all goes well, Russia hopes to send more advanced versions of the FEDOR robots to help astronauts with special tasks.

Earlier this year, the US space agency launched two little robots called Astrobees to help astronauts with daily chores, like finding lost pieces of equipment. Meanwhile, the European Space Agency’s social AI-powered CIMON spent a year assisting astronauts, before returning to Earth on August 27, 2019.

1.What is Skybot F-850 unable to do

A.Drive a vehicle like humans. B.Conduct short conversations.

C.Say something funny to people. D.Pilot the spacecraft to the ISS.

2.How long did it take Skybot F-850 to fly to the ISS

A.Two days. B.Three days.

C.Five days. D.Fourteen days.

3.We infer from the text that Skybot          .

A.is bound to take the place of human crews

B.isn’t the first robot to help at the space station

C.worked with two other robots to assist astronauts

D.was launched to measure its security and flexibility

4.Where is the text most likely from

A.A science experiment. B.A news report.

C.A technology guidebook. D.A research paper.

Kong Zhenlan, a 71-year-old woman from China’s Shanxi Province, has devoted the last four decades of her life to adopting orphans(孤儿), making sure that they had food on the table and got access to education.

Even though she could only afford to support herself on a modest income, Kong Zhenlan couldn’t bear to walk by the orphanage in Jixian County every day and see so many children struggling in poverty. One day, she stopped by and picked one of the orphans in her arms. That’s when she knew she had to do something to make their life better. The modest woman started adopting these abandoned children and nurturing them as her own. Over the last 47 years, she has adopted 45 orphans, some of whom grew up to become doctors and lawyers.

Kong’s oldest adopted child is 45-years-old, while her youngest is 9-months-old. Today, her adult children donate some of their monthly salaries to help bring up their younger siblings(兄弟姐妹), but in the beginning, the woman had to make due with what she had. And it wasn’t much. She would spend all her money making sure the children had milk to drink, and if there was none left for her, she would look for leftovers in local garbage cans.

The modest woman recently told Pear Video that over the last 40 years she has only been getting 2 hours of sleep per night. She goes to sleep at around midnight, after putting the children to sleep and finishing up her chores(家务), and gets up around 2 am to check if they’re all still covered with blankets. Graduation finally came. My classmates and I made up our minds do something. Someone suggested make a video to record our experiences at school and we agreed. Material collecting took us a whole week, during it we interviewed our teachers and took picture of every aspect of school life. The editing part after that was tough. We debated over what to put them into the video. Some disagreements were unavoidable, and the video turned out perfect. Several days later, when the video was played on a graduation ceremony, it was very popular for everyone. What a wonderfully time the students and teachers shared! That surely gives us a great sense of achievement.

Below are some ways to show appreciation to your parents:

Obey and respect them—This is a very important thing to do. Parents are very pleased when their daughters or sons obey and respect them. They feel like they are so important, and they feel like everything they have done for their daughters or sons is very worth it. 1.. Obeying and respecting parents is also a way to show you value them so much.

Give time to them—I know we are all growing up. 2.. You have work, or you have school activities that keep you busy. But hey, do you forget that as you grow up, your parents are also getting old? When your parents see you every day, they feel more alive. So give them time. It's not that hard.3.Well, I know all parents have their own special occasions. You must remember them and celebrate them. Nothing can make your parents happier than celebrating their special occasions with their loved ones, especially their birthdays.

Keep eating together at mealtimes—Even though you are busy or you don't live with your parents, at least find some time to eat together with your parents. You are even luckier if you are living together with your parents. Lots of families are losing the practice of eating together. 4. So you can discuss family matters, or family conflicts. Your parents can also discuss proper behavior and manners during eating together. 5..

A.Remember and celebrate special occasions

B.This is also family bonding and you get to know each other

C.Take some time this Sunday to take them to the movie theater

D.If ever your parents are busy, ask them to find time to eat together

E.Do not make your parents feel they don't have a place in your life

F.You need to do things to be successful because you keep on growing up.

G.Pick up some items from your local grocery and cook something delicious for your parents

A business school in Paris will soon begin using artificial intelligence and facial analysis to determine whether students are paying attention in class. The software, called Nestr, is used in two online classes at the ESG business school beginning in September.

The idea, according to LCA founder Marcel Saucet, is to use the data that Nestor collects to improve the performance both students and professors. The software uses students' webcams(网络摄像头)to analyze eye movements and facial expressions and determine whether students are paying attention to a video lecture. Professors would also be able to identify moments when students' attention declined, which could help to improve their teaching.

Advocates for AI in education say the technology could be used as a digital tutor that would adapt to a student's individual needs, and help develop more effective studying habits. Such software could also help teachers by providing quantitative(定量的)feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching.

But AI programs rely on massive information of personal data. and there are concerns over how such data would be treated. Saucet says Nestor won't store any of the video footage(片段)it captures and that his company has no plans to sell any other data the software collects. In addition, some are concerned that AI may one day replace teachers.

Rose Luckin, a professor at the University College London Knowledge Lab, says AI could unlock the "black box of learning" by providing information on how and when learning happens. But she cautions(告诫)against adopting new technologies that, while alluring, may not actually respond to critical needs. She thinks a program like Nestor could be useful for students who take classes remotely, since "there isn’t a human there watching them". So Luckin sees the technology more as an assistant, rather than a replacement.

Sauce agrees. "Human contact is not going to go away, " he says. "There will always be professors."

1.How does Nestor work to tell whether students are paying attention?

A.By controlling the thoughts of students

B.By analyzing eye movements and facial expressions

C.By collecting all the data of students' performance in class

D.By reminding professors to pay more attention to students

2.What does the underlined word "alluring" probably mean in the fifth paragraph?

A.Attractive

B.Controversial

C.Limited

D.Alarming

3.What do people concern about Nestor?

A.It will teach courses in place of teachers.

B.Nestor won't store any information it collects.

C.It can prevent students from more effective studying habits.

D.It can't benefit the company by selling students' data it collects.

4.What is Rose Luckin's attitude towards using Nestor?

A.Favorable

B.Doubtful

C.Objective

D.Disapproving
