More than 100 scientists from 25 countries have traveled to faraway places to collect wild crop seeds(种子) in an effort to help battle climate change.

The scientists, who have been compared to the heroes of the “Indiana Jones” movies, traveled on foot, four-wheeled vehicles(交通工具), boats, horses and even elephants to reach faraway areas. They faced extreme heat, dust, and danger from wild animals. At last, they collected 4, 644 seeds of 371 wild relatives of 28 world crops, many of which are said to be endangered.

The Crop Trust, an organization that works to save different kinds of crops, is directing the project. The group is working in partnership with Britain's Royal Botanic Gardens and Millennium Seed Bank. Additional financial support comes from Norway. The project is believed to be the largest organized international effort yet to collect and protect crops' wild relatives.Hannes Dempewolf is a scientist and the head at the Crop Trust. He said“What these seed collectors went through in the field resembles scenes from an Indiana Jones movie.”

Some crops are threatened because of destruction of forests, climate change and expanded cities. The newly-found wild seeds have developed so plants can grow in extreme temperatures, poor soils, and even in low rainfall areas.

A United Nations report says that food production is at risk because of a shortage of rain and other weather extremes connected to climate change. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says that the number of plant species is quickly decreasing and people are depending on fewer species for food. Those wild seeds could be important in feeding a growing human population in some areas and offer a largely unused source of diversity(多样性) to crops.

1.What does the second paragraph show?

A.Collecting seeds is not an easy job.

B.The scientists’ story is made into a movie.

C.The wild seeds are in danger of extinction.

D.The scientists can choose from many vehicles.

C.Knowing about the worlds farming practices.

D.Helping battle climate change.

Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track.

But while it’s long been believed that endorphins (脑内啡) — chemicals in the body that cause happiness — are behind the so-called “runner’s high”, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew.

According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.

To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice.

Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety.

But after being given a drug to block their endorphins the change. However, when their endocannabinoids were block with a different drug, their runner’s high symptoms seemed to fade.

“The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner's high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on science blog Lifchacker.

Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety.

The UK’s National Health Service even prescribes (开药方) exercise to patients who are suffering from depression.

“Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate (中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website.

It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we’re feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.

1.What did scientists from German universities recently discover?

A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.

B.The runner’s high could be caused by endocannabinoids.

C.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.

D.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one’s mood.

2.The scientists gave mice drugs in their experiment to    .

A.find what reduces the runner’s high symptoms

B.see the specific symptoms of the runner’s high

C.identify what is responsible for the runner’s high

D.test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released

3.The underlined word “notion” in Paragraph 7 has the closest meaning to     .

A.effect B.goal

C.question D.belief

4.According to the UK’s National Health Service, regular workouts       .

A.are the best way to treat depression

B.can help ease depression symptoms

C.only work for those with serious depression

D.can help people completely recover from depression

Kieron Graham has known from a young age that he was adopted. While he loves his adoptive family, he has always wondered about his birth mother and brother. When his adoptive mom gave him a DNA test tool, they both hoped it might lead to his birth family. But neither guessed it would work so quickly, or that when it did, Graham would learn he and his long-lost brother may have crossed paths every day.

It took just one week from the time Graham, a college student at Georgia's Kennesaw State University, received his DNA results on Ancestry.com for him to connect with his brother. Graham's DNA results showed that his closest match was a man named Vincent Ghant, and it turned out Ghant lived just a few minutes away.

Graham reached out and learned that the two were in fact long-lost brothers. Their mother, Shawn Ghant, made the difficult decision to place Kieron in adoptive care when he was just a baby. And she has worried and wondered about her youngest son ever since. Graham has since been reunited with his mother and both of his brothers on his mother's side.

“It’s all surreal(离奇的), too many emotions to describe exactly what I’m feeling about the entire situation, but it’s a good situation,” Graham tells MNN.

As fate would have it, Kieron and Vincent are both students at Kennesaw State. They even have the same major: political science. So it's a safe bet the two crossed paths many times over the past three years. And now, thanks to some DNA sleuthing(筛查), the two will cross paths many more times in the years to come.

“We’re getting together on Christmas with everyone, birth mother included,” Graham says. “That's sure to be a very indelible Christmas indeed, which will always be treasured by us.”

1.According to the passage, Graham ___________.

A.is quite familiar with his birth family

B.relied on a website to find his birth family

C.happens to be working in Ancestry.com

D.is studying engineering in the state university

2.What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A.It was hard for Shawn to place her son in adoptive care.

B.Graham has three adoptive brothers on his mother’s side.

C.It was too difficult for the whole family to get united.

D.Shawn Ghant loves her older sons more.

3.What does Graham probably think of his experience?

A.Unbelievable and exciting. B.Surprising but common.

C.Undoubted and inspiring. D.Moving but painful.

4.What does the underlined word “indelible” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Normal. B.Silent. C.Traditional. D.Unforgettable.

"Home After Dark" by David Small (Liveright, Sept. 11 )

In 2009, Small published a celebrated graphic memoir (回忆录) called"Stitches". Now the Caldecott Medal winner is back with a graphic novel about a motherless 13-year-old boy brought up in an unhappy home in California. This is a tale told in few words and many striking images.     When we think about the dreams we have. it is surprising to see how many people failed even if they could have succeeded. So today I’ m going to tell you five ways to kill your dreams.

Believe in overnight success.

Everyone knows the story of a tech guy who built a mobile app and sold it for a lot of money. 1. If you investigate further, you will find that he is well-educated and has been working on the project for 20 years. Therefore, your overnight success is always a result of what you' ve done in your life.

2.

Constantly, people around you always have opinions on which path you should take. But whichever way you choose, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And one day you need to solve those problems yourself.

Decide to rest when success is guaranteed.

When your life goes well and everything is set, it's time to rest. Actually, when you're growing towards a peak, you need to work even harder and find yourself another peak. If you were content with what you've accomplished, it would stop you from a greater success. 3.

Believe the fault is someone else’s.

I constantly see people saying, "I created this great product, but the market is so bad. "If you have dreams, it's your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one bought your product, surely there is something there that is your fault. 4.

Believe that the only things that matter are the dreams themselves.

Achieving a dream is a short moment, but your life is not. 5. And the only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey.

A.There’ s no time to settle down.

B.Be responsible for your own dreams.

C.Life is never about the goals themselves.

D.The overnight success is beyond our reach.

E.Believe someone else has the answers for you.

F.When we face difficulties, believe in ourselves

G.The story may seem real, but I bet it's incomplete.

Researchers recently discovered some unusual behavior in chimps living in the forests of West Africa. An adult male in the wild would pick up a rock, throw it at a tree while yelling and then run away. Although researchers aren't certain why, they make a guess: The chimps seem to prefer trees that create longer-lasting sounds when struck.

A team of researchers from Germany first discovered this behavior three years ago. Because the actions appeared to be localized, the researchers suggested the purpose was a local tradition and was likely part of some sort of ritual(仪式), Phys. org reports. But they weren't sure what purpose the ritual served.

So the group desired to carry out more experiments to determine why the chimps were so interested in throwing rocks at trees. This time around, they went to the same areas but set up microphones to capture(捕捉) the sounds of the stones as they were thrown.

Researchers analyzed all the recordings and found that the chimps tended to prefer throwing rocks at trees that made lower, longer-lasting sounds. Often these were trees that had exposed roots.

In their findings, published in Biology Letters, the researchers write that “low-frequency sounds travel further in the environment and are better suited for long-distance communication”.

If chimps tried to communicate. it would be more effective for them to strike the trees or choose the ones that made the loudest noises when struck. Because the researchers saw chimps stick to the same trees and never choose new ones, the location could be a factor. Researcher Ammie Kalan tells Science that maybe the locations of the trees have something to do with nearby resources like food and water, and that the sound is a signal to others where to find them.

1.How did the researchers feel about the chimps behavior from the first two paragraphs?

A.Doubtful B.Excited C.Disappointed D.Frightened.

2.What did the researchers do during their experiments?

A.They tried to make long-lasting sounds.

B.They recorded the sounds from the stricken(受...侵袭的) trees.

C.They designed various sounds for the chimps.

D.They collected different sounds of the chimps.

3.What does Ammie Kalan think of the chimps' behavior?

A.It is a good way of seeking food. B.It is a means of communication.

C.It is a natural response to food. D.It is a symbol of their growth.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.How the chimps produce sounds.

B.The chimps’ habit of throwing rocks.

C.Why the chimps like to throw rocks at trees.

D.Chimps often throw rocks at different kinds of trees.

In the 19th century, one of America's greatest writers, Walt Whitman, helped people learn to value poetry. Whitman created a new kind of poetry.

Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in New York City. During his long life, he watched America grow from a young nation to the strongest industrial power in the world. As a young man, Whitman worked as a school teacher, a printer and a newspaper reporter. He was 36 years old when he published his first book of poetry in 1855. He called it Leaves of Grass. It has only 12 poems. The poems are written in free verse. The lines do not follow any set form. Some lines are short. Some are long. The words at the end of each line do not have a similar sound. They do not rhyme.

One of America's greatest thinkers and writers immediately recognized the importance of Leaves of Grass. Ralph Waldo Emerson praised Whitman’ s works. But most other poets and writers said nothing and even denounced it. Most readers also rejected Whitman’ s poems. The new form of his poetry surprised many people. Even his own brother told Whitman that he should stop writing poetry. But Whitman had many things to say. And he continued to say them. Readers began to understand that America had a great new poetic voice.

Walt Whitman’ s poems praise the United States and its democracy. The poet expressed his love for America and its people in many ways. Experts today praise Leaves of Grass as a major literary work. In 1873, Walt Whitman suffered a stroke. He spent the last years of his life in Camden, New Jersey. Whitman was poor and weak during the last years of his life. He died in 1892. Some critics say Walt Whitman was a spokesman for democracy. Others say he was not a spokesman for anything. Instead, they simply call him a great poet.

A.His poems have the same rhyme.

B.He is the first great poet in the USA.

C.He helped people to create new poems.

D.His poems show his love for his country.

2.Why was Leaves of Grass refused at first?

A.The poems are quite short. B.The form of poetry is special.

C.Whitman wasn’ t famous then. D.There are only 12 poems in it.

A.Accused B.Downloaded C.Published D.Translated.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Walt Whitman---a great soldier

B.Walt Whitman---an unfortunate poet

C.Walt Whitman and Leaves of Grass

A woman from America has managed to train her beloved dog Stella how to talk. Sadly, the dog can't speak, but it can communicate basic commands by pressing buttons of a soundboard( 发生板). Stella's owner Christina started using the technology when the dog was just eight weeks old. Now Stella is 18 months old and can say 29 words.

“The way she uses words to communicate and the words she's combining are really similar to a 2-year-old child. Unsurprisingly, the dog's favorite word is"walk' fallowed closely by ‘beach’”, Christina said.

Stella's progress was updated online. “Today when she heard some noises outside and wanted to investigate, I told her we were staying inside,” said Christina. “Stella responded by saying, ‘Look’ 9 times in a row, and then ‘Come outside’. She was clearly in a more frantic (发狂似的)state, and her language use matched that. And I'm impressed that Stella is communicating with language during her more heightened state, not just when she’s calm and in a quiet space. This shows that words are becoming more automatic for her to use.

Stella surprised Christina when Stella was standing by the door and whimpering(呜咽)one day. After a bit of pacing back and forththe dog went over to the soundboard and said “Want”, “Jake” and “Come”, saying that she wanted Christina’ s husband Jake to come home. In about 15 minutes, Jake walked through the door and Stella said the word “Happy”. Christina hopes to expand Stella’ s vocabulary in the future to see just how many phrases the dog can master.

1.What do we know about the soundboard?

A.It includes 29 buttons. B.It is Stella’ s favorite toy.

C.It is invented by Christina. D.it is used to help Stella talk.

2.Which of the following is probably Stella’ s favorite activity?

A.Taking a walk. B.Going to the beach.

C.Talking with kids. D.Looking after babies.

3.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.Stella disliked staying at home.

B.Stella and Christina had a quarrel

C.Stella' s language skills were improved.

D.Stella made noises to draw people’s attention.

4.Why was Stella in a bad mood according to the last paragraph?

A.Her soundboard was broken. B.She was punished by Christina.

C.Her owner didn’t play with her. D.She failed to see Jake that day.

David Aguilar is a boy born without his right arm. Because of that, Aguilar has always stood out from the persons at the same age. As a child, he was very nervous to be in front of other guys, because he thought that he was different. While growing up, Aguilar had to learn how to do everything with just one hand. Although he was able to do almost everything people with two hands can do, Aguilar explained that he still thought about getting a prosthetic hand (假肢) throughout his childhood just so that he could look a little bit more normal and fit in with everyone else.

When Aguilar told his parents that those arms were cool because they were mechanical (机械的) and could make you look like a robot, his parents began thinking about buying a prosthetic arm for Aguilar. However, when Aguilar' s parents started looking into getting their son a prosthetic hand, they discovered how expensive it was. And they couldn't afford to buy one for their son.

Yet when Aguilar was playing with his Lego (乐高) at the age of nine years old, he started experimenting with building his own prosthetic arm. He didn't know it at the time, but his favorite toy was about to change the way he viewed himself as well as change the course of his life. At first, he just wanted to create something that could help him and be part of him. As he linked the blocks together around his arm, he just started making this prosthetic from Lego. When Aguilar looked at himself in the mirror for the first time with his Lego prosthetic, he was amazed by what he saw.

However, the arm wasn't the most strong and would often bend and break if he tried to do any heavy lifting with it. So almost ten years later, Aguilar set out to build himself a new prosthetic arm and he hoped to help more people who didn't have enough money to buy prosthetic hands. One day, one of his dad's friends gave him a Lego plane as a gift, but all he saw was an arm.

A new paper published in Environmental Research Letters has some warning news for people living in the lower 48 states: You may be at risk from river flooding and not even know it until the water starts to rise.

In fact, the study, estimates of present and future flood risk in the United States, found that 41 million U. S. residents are at risk from flooding along rivers. That’s three times more than current estimates based on the flood maps produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) , which primarily maps the areas at risk for 1-in-100-year floods in populous (人口众多的) river basins.

Why does the big difference come into being? As always, it’s all about the data. Generally, FEMA prioritizes risk-assessment areas based on their population; reserving expensive field-work methodologies (研究方法) for the more populous river basins, but many other rivers have not yet been mapped at all.

The size of the USA means that flood maps made in this way are incomplete. It would be too expensive and time-consuming to survey every river basin in America. The national-scale flood maps produced by FEMA leave the flood risk of many parts of the country unaccounted for.

For this research, scientists from The Nature Conservancy adopted a pioneering methodology that avoids the defects of the FEMA approach, where individual catchments (流域) are studied by making use of big data. The study used a new high-resolution model, produced by the flood-mapping organization Fathom, which copies floods on all rivers across the entire continental United States.

“We were all surprised by how many people are actually exposed to freshwater flooding in the USA,” said Oliver Wing, lead researcher on the study and a PhD student at the University of Bristol. “It’s particularly worrisome considering that most of these people aren’t even aware of the risk they face. This study helps fill that critical information gap.”

1.What did the new paper intend to tell readers?

A.The mistakes made by FEMA.

B.The serious situation of the flood.

C.The populous river basins of the USA.

D.The unseen risk of the flood in the USA.

2.Why is the map produced by FEMA incomplete?

A.It’s dangerous to research all the rivers.

B.The size of the USA is too big.

C.It ignores less populous rivers.

D.The efficiency of making it is low.

3.What does the underlined word “defects” in paragraph 5 mean?

A.Shortcomings. B.Potential.

C.Consumption. D.Contributions.

4.What attitude does Oliver Wing have to the study?

A.Critical. B.Supportive.

C.Cautious. D.Uncaring.

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during a day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes an interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of strange,” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift-users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want — it’s your own little box. If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地) across from each other to create distance.

Newcomers to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act quickly. Once in, for most people the rule is simple — look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts? “You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people, we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be considered to be threatening or strange, “The easiest way do this is avoid eye contact,” she said.

1.What is people’s response to the lift etiquette according to Gray?

A.Thinking much of it. B.Avoiding it on purpose.

C.Researching it continuously. D.Ignoring it unconsciously.

2.What does Gray think of riding a lift?

A.It’s funny and quick. B.It’s strange and dangerous.

C.It’s interesting but awkward. D.It’s convenient but boring.

3.What may most people do if they stay in the lift?

A.Talk loudly to each other. B.Keep still and silence.

C.Use mobile phones. D.Keep a close distance.

4.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To show how to ride each elevators.

B.To introduce some rules of elevator etiquette.

C.To show how to break awkwardness of riding lifts

D.To analyze the reasons for keeping elevator etiquette.

I enjoy life because I am endlessly interested in people and their growth. My interest leads me to widen my knowledge of people, and this in turn makes me believe in the common goodness of mankind. I believe that the normal human heart is good since their birth. That is, it’s born sensitive and feeling eager to be approved and to approve, hungry for simple happiness and the chance to live.

Like Confucius, I am absorbed in the wonder of the earth, and the life on it. With a great faith in the human heart and its power to grow toward the light, I find here are reasons enough for hope and confidence in the future of mankind. The common sense of people will surely prove that mutual (相互的) support and cooperation are only sensible for the security and happiness of all. Such faith keeps me continually ready to do what one person can toward shaping the environment in which the human being can grow with freedom. This environment, I believe, is based upon the necessity for security and friendship.

I take heart in a promising fact that the future world will contain food supplies enough for the entire earth population. Our knowledge of medical science will be sufficient to improve the health of the whole human race. Our resources and education, if administered on a world scale, will lift the intelligence of the race.

Half a century ago, few people thought of world food, health and education. Many are thinking today of these things. Now I find my only questions about this: Are there enough people now who believe? Is there enough time left for the wise to act? It is a contest between ignorance and death, or wisdom and life. My faith in humanity stands firm.

1.What results in the author’s belief in people’s goodness?

A.His understanding of people. B.His desire for happiness.

C.His sensitive attitude to life. D.His kindness to people.

2.What should people do to build a secure and happy world?

A.Get ready to develop more friendship. B.Compete with others in everything.

C.Defeat others to get enough freedom. D.Help and cooperate with each other.

3.What does the author want to express in paragraph 3?

A.His demand for the present life. B.His expectation of the future world.

C.His belief in better environment. D.His hope of human relationships.

4.What may be the best title of the text?

A.Human Nature Is Good B.Believe in Ourselves

C.Live a Happy Life D.Help People in Need

One in five women and one in eight men are becoming more tired and less productive, according to a new Australian study on mobile phone use.

Led by the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, researchers surveyed 709 mobile phone users across the country aged 18 to 83 and asked them a series of questions based on a similar study 13 years ago. Identifying a phenomenon "technoference (科技干扰)", researchers discovered a significant increase in people blaming their devices for losing sleep, becoming less productive and even getting more aches and pains".

According to the study's lead author Dr Oscar, the issue is so bad that 24 percent of women and 15 percent of men are now considered to be " problematic mobile phone users". "When we talk about technoference, we're referring to the everyday intrusions (侵入)and interruptions that people experience due to mobile phones and their usage," he said. "Our survey found technoference had increased among men and women. For example, self-reports relating to the loss of sleep and productivity showed that these negative outcomes had significantly increased during the last 13 years. This finding suggests that mobile phones are potentially increasingly affecting aspects of daytime functioning due to lack of sleep. "

Compared to a 2005 study, "technoference" issues for 18 to 24-year-old experienced a surprising 40. 9 percent rise, while those aged 25 to 29 also recorded a dramatic increase of 23. 5 percent.

Oscar said that with the number of smartphone users around the world expected to surpass 2. 5 billion before the end of this year, the problem of "technoference" could get even worse. "The speed and depth of smartphone take-up makes our population particularly vulnerable to some of the negative consequences of high mobile phone use." he said. "Rapid technological innovations have led to dramatic changes in today's mobile phone technology, which can improve the quality of life for phone users but also result in some negative outcomes. "

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.

Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.

In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.

This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.

Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design-his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

2.What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes?

A.It is adding microfibers to the clothes.

B.It is worsening environmental problems.

C.It is making synthetic clothes last longer.

D.It is doing great damage to washing machines.

3.What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project?

A.It has achieved great success. B.It hasn’t got anything done.

C.It is known to very few people. D.It is facing some difficulties.

4.What’s the best title for the text?

A.It’s important to learn to recycle

B.It’s never easy to solve pollution problems

C.Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution?

I was a newcomer in a class. So was Alice. That's where the similarities ended. I was tall and she was small. My thick, black hair had been recently cut short. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her. I considered her my enemy. She liked me. She wanted to be friends.

One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to answer any other way. No one had invited me over to play. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school. I got very surprised when she led me into an apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she'd outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from smiling so much. She showed me her wardrobe, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her as a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.

Alice had the whole neighborhood charmed. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, and spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall.

Alice, my first real friend since childhood, taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: that your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.

1.What made the similarities end?

A.Leaving the author's old school.

B.Being admitted to their new classes.

A.Alice was too mature for them.

B.Alice must have made them by herself.

C.They should have been kept well.

D.They brought her back to her childhood.

3.We can infer from the passage that Alice ________.

A.helped the author see her own strengths

B.was good with the people around her

C.helped to bring out the best in the author

D.inspired the authors love for fashion

4.Which of the following best describes Alice as a friend?

A.Humorous. B.Ambitious.
