The U.S. high school dropout rate has fallen in recent years, with the number of dropouts declining from 1 million in 2012 to about 750,000 in 2016, according to a new study released on Tuesday. The number of “dropout factories" — high schools in which fewer than 60 percent of freshmen graduate in four years—declined significantly during the same period.

"Clear progress is being made," said Bob Wise, a former West Virginia governor who heads the Alliance for Excellent Education, one of the organizations that published the study. “It’s not a total success yet. We shouldn't take a victory lap. But we can at least start warming up.”

Education Secretary Arne Duncan has said the improving graduation rate serves as evidence that the nation's public schools are making progress. But there are many reasons that graduation rates can rise, and not all of them have to do with stronger schools preparing more students for life after high school.

Alabama, for examplemade outsize gains in 2014: Its graduation fate jumped more than six percentage points, the second-biggest increase in the nation. But the increase coincided with a policy change that took in the same year: Alabama students no longer had to pass a high school exit exam to earn a diploma. So what looks like a major improvement stemmed at least in part from easier requirements.

It is also not clear how many students are graduating with the skills they need for the workplace or for college. Graduation requirements vary widely across states, and many states offer multiple levels of diplomas with different requirements.

Arizona students can earn a standard diploma that requires four courses in math, four in English and three in science, according to Achieve, a nonprofit organization that has studied graduation requirements in each state. But Arizona students also can earn a “Grand Canyon" diploma, which requires just two courses each in math, science and English—less than many colleges require for admission.

Something strange was happening inside Anne' s home. During the summer of 2014, twins Gavin and Garrett, then three, each had skin rash (疹子) that wouldn't go away. 14-year-old J. D. had stomach pains so severe that he couldn’t climb the stairsbut tests found nothing wrong. By winter, the family's health problems were getting worse.

One day, Anne found brown water flowed out of the tap. Worried that the water was polluted, the family began using bottled water for cookingdrinking, and bathing.

In January 2015the city of Flint sent out a notice stating that the water supply—which had been switched, in a cost-cutting measure, from the Detroit water system to the Flint River the previous spring—contained high levels of trihalomethanes (三卤甲烷). The notice warned that elderly people might be at risk for health problems but emphasized that the water was otherwise safe to drink.

Shocked, the self-claimed "stay-at-home mom turned water warrior" researched the water supply and searched the Internet for information that she distributed to city officials, listing the side effects of exposure to trihalomethanes. Then she urged her neighbors to attend city council meetings, where they shared their health problems. Still, officials insisted the water was safe to drink. So Anne demanded that the city test her water. The results were disturbing. The trihalomethanes were the least of her problems. The tests included that the lead levels in her water were nearly seven times the legal amount.

Anne had her children tested for lead. All the kids showed lead poisoning. She requested Flint's water quality reports and discovered that the city wasn't applying the proper corrosion (腐蚀) control standards to its pipes; the standards prevent the metal in pipes from leaking into the water.

A.His stomach hurt so much that he couldn’t' climb the stairs.

B.He had rash on his skin which wouldn’t' disappear.

C.His disease got too ill for him to get any medical tests.

D.He had weak eyesight and couldn't go to school,

2.Why did the city of Flint change its water supply?

A.The Detroit water system had been polluted.

B.The Flint River was made clean a year ago.

C.They wanted to cut the cost of water supply.

D.The Flint River always has brown water.

3.The test of the water from Anne' s home showed that         .

A.her family had the worst of the trihalomethanes pollution

B.the water from her tap was safe to use except for drinking

C.her family was located in the most polluted part of the city

D.there was something more serious than the trihalomethanes

4.The water problem was caused by

A.the lack of proper corrosion control to the pipes

B.the overuse of water-purifying chemicals

C.the exposure to trihalomethanes in the water

D.the improper use of metal in the pipes

Rescue in a Bottle

Curtis Whitson had rafted (v.乘筏) down the Arroyo Seco, a river in central California, several times before.

This year, Curtis Whitson knew the water-fall was coming. He figured he would get out of his raft into the shallow water, get down the rocks along ropes on either side of the falls, and continue on his way, as he had on a previous trip.

But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually manageable falls into something fierce. And this year, instead of his friends, Whitson’s companions were his girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez, and his 13-year-old son, Hunter. As the three of them approached the falls late in the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Whitson could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrowing canyon(峡谷) that they were in serious trouble. There was no way they’d be able to get down the rocks as planned.

“The water was just roaring through there with tremendous force,” recalls Whitson, 45.

They had no smart phone service, and they hadn’t seen a single person in the past three days. And Whitson knew that they’d be sharing the ground there with rattlesnakes and mountain lions.

As he was thinking what to do, Whitson hit on a bit of luck---he heard voices coming from the other side of the falls. He yelled, but the sound of the rushing water drowned him out.

“We have to get these people a message,” Whitson thought.

He grabbed a stick and pulled out his pocketknife to carve “Help” in it. Then he tied a rope to it so the people would know it wasn’t just any stick. He tried throwing it over the falls, but it floated away in the wrong direction.

“We’ve got to do something!” Whitson yelled to his son. “Have we got anything else?”

Then he spotted his water bottle. Whitson grabbed it and carved “Help!”on it. Ramirez also reminded him that he had a pen and paper in his backpack.

Whitson knew it was a slim hope. But he wrote “6-15 19:00 We are stuck here@ the waterfall. Get help please” and pushed the note into the bottle. This time, his throw over the waterfall was perfect.

“All right, that’s all we can do,” Whitson told Hunter.

How to Order Coffee at Starbucks

Learning how to order coffee at Starbucks can be tricky, and if you think that ordering coffee at Starbucks is confusing, you are not alone.

1.Things move quickly as their employees try to serve customers as efficiently as possible. Orders are generally taken at one of the cash registers. You will be asked for your first name, which you should state clearly. 2.. Don't be offended if they spell your name incorrectly. People who have unique or hard — to — spell names will sometimes use an easy ''Starbucks'' name when ordering, like Mike or Amy.

3. Their terms for size areTall, Grande, Venti, and Trenta. Although if you order a small, medium, large, or extra-large drink they will still understand you.

For ordering basic coffee, beyond specifying the size you want, you will need to tell the server whether you want regular or decaffeinated (脱去咖啡因的)coffee.4.  If you intend to add cream or milk to your coffee, say with room for cream, or simply, with room. If you want a full cup, say no room. Read the list above the counter ahead of time, because they may not ask you which you would like. 5..

When you order, say the size you want first, then give the name of the drink, and finally add the special instructions last.

A.Starbucks is often a very busy place

B.Starbucks offers all kinds of coffee

C.Otherwisethey will assume that you want regular

D.Sometimes they will write your name in short forms

E.The ordering process is complicated because they use terms to describe drink size

F.Finally, if you are very particular about the freshness of your coffee, ask in advance

G.Your name will immediately be written on your cup and called out when, your drink is ready

Every year, more books on happiness are published. And every year, more people feel depressed because they do not see themselves as happy. They don’t remember or know what it feels like, and instead, they feel guilty that they aren’t as happy as everyone says they should be. This is really a sad state of emotional affairs.

The books, blogs, YouTube videos and advice columns (专栏) will tell you that if you read, exercise, stay busy, help others, and increase your intimacy (亲密) every day, then you too can be happy.

The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn’t mean you have to be sad, angry, or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice.

Contentment is somewhere between satisfied and peaceful. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you, but you don’t need to allow it to bother you. And that, my friends, is a very nice way to go through life.

I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments. Because I know about myself and I can respond differently. Doing this takes away stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment.

If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment — you do it regularly and early enough each day — it will help you go through any challenges you may have to face later.

Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control — such is life — but I am feeling pretty good because I actively living my purpose. I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same.

As doctors performed surgery on Dagmar Turner’s brain, the sound of a violin filled the operating room. The music came from the patient on the operating table. In a video from the surgery, the violinist was moving her bow (琴弓) up and down as surgeons worked to remove her brain tumor (肿瘤). The King’s College hospital surgeons woke her up in the middle of the operation in order to ensure they did not damage parts of the brain necessary for playing the violin and keep her hand’s functions intact.

Turner, 53, learned that she had a slow-growing tumor. Later doctors found that it had become more aggressive and the violinist decided to have surgery to remove it. “We knew how important the violin is to Turner, so it was vital that we preserved function in the delicate areas of her brain that allowed her to play,” Keyoumars Ashkan, a doctor at King’s College Hospital, said in a press release.

Before Turner’s operation, Ashkan and his colleagues spent two hours carefully mapping her brain to identify areas that were active when she played the violin and those controlling language and movement. Waking her up during surgery then allowed doctors to monitor whether those parts were suffering damage.

Brad Mahon, expert at Carnegie Mellon University, said the basic features of an “awake craniotomy” — the type of brain surgery where patients are awake in order to avoid damage to critical brain areas — have remained largely unchanged for decades. But he said that doctors are now able to map the patient’s brain activity in great detail before the surgery, using an imaging technique called functional MRI. That means surgeons are coming into the operating room with far more information about a specific patient’s brain. That kind of information helps doctors tailor tests to a patient’s particular needs.

1.What does the underlined word “intact”mean in the first paragraph?

A.Strong. B.Sound.

C.Talented. D.Influential.

2.Why did Ashkan and his colleagues map Turner’s brain before operation?

A.To keep her brain more active when she played the violin.

B.To monitor whether her brain had suffered damage severely.

C.To recognize the areas related to music and movement precisely.

D.To remove the tumor while keeping all function of her brain.

3.What can we know according to Brad Mahon?

A.Doctors are using an imaging technique to monitor the surgery.

B.Patients are asleep to protect critical brain areas in a surgery.

C.A patient’s language ability couldn’t be preserved before.

D.Surgeons can personalize a patient’s operation by mapping his brain.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Musician joined in her own brain surgery

B.Mapping a brain is realized after surgery

C.The violinist suffers from a brain tumor

D.Doctors perform surgery on a brain

One of the most important things that has happened to me occurred long before I was aware of it. As the story goes, I was three days old and Mom was singing “The Name Game” song to me: “Christine Bo-Bean.” By day four, I was given a new name —Christine-Bo-Bean, or just Bo-Bee to my mother.

Now, I am Bo to her and close friends. Although I have been Bo to my mother all my life, I recently discovered that my true name is not on my birth certificate; it’s the name that is as unique and memorable as I am.

People usually know me as Christine. They still see me as a quiet, bookish child. They don’t know who I am now. My most recent hopes, fears, goals, dreams and opinions escape their notice; it is easier to think of me as I was. In their minds, they have a box labeled “Christine” in which I fit neatly, and as Christine, I was content with the perfect packaging.

Those who call me Bo or Bo-Bee really know me. They remember who I was and realize I have changed. The Bo I am is ever-changing, ever-growing and ever-learning.

When I was Christine, I was quiet, and easily scared. I feared groups, meeting new people and sharing my opinions. I was more comfortable with a book than my best friend. As Christine, I thought everyone was better than I was.

As Bo, I still love my books, but I want to discuss them. As Bo, my dream is to live where I can experience new things and meet new people. I dream about being alone on a stage lit by a single spotlight; I have that confidence now. I am equal to those I once saw as better than me.

I can’t always be Bo. Sometimes exposing myself is still scary and I feel too nervous; I want to hide in those old boxes. Mostly, however, I am ready for the world. So, just call me Bo.

1.When was the author given a nickname?

A.When she was three years old.

B.On the fourth day after she was born.

C.Seven days after she was born.

D.When she received the old “Christine” box.

2.What do the people know about the author as Christine?

A.They think the author is active and crazy.

B.They care about the author’s most recent feelings.

C.They don’t realize the author has changed.

D.They don’t know the author has changed her name.

3.What kind of person was the author in the past?

A.She showed no interest in reading.

B.She took pleasure in finding new things.

C.She loved reading and sharing books with friends.

D.She lacked confidence and preferred to be alone.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Bo—the True Name

B.A Unique Name

C.Remember the Past

D.The Meaning of Nickname

I walked to Mrs. Windsor's house and waited outside. She was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. 1 stood against the wall and daydreamed what I'd rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn't have a gift for it. Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.

The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. 1 walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me.

With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned(皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I had to admit I was a rather mechanical (呆板的) pianist.

After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?" 1 looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn't know what she meant. “Like a story. Here, let me try and you listen," Pasha advised.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?" Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now a princess appears and she's picking flowers from the water's edge." A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha's dancing fingers.

College helps students dream of more than a salary

From the earliest days of our country, education has been seen as the foundation for our future. 1. . Is investing in a college or university education still worth it?

2.. Students who graduate from college can expect to make about 60% more than those who do not, well over a million dollars over a lifetime. But what about the benefits of college that are more difficult to measure?

College is a passport to different places, different times, and different ways of thinking - - from learning new languages to considering the arc of human history to diving deep into the building blocks of matter. It gives students a chance to understand themselves differently.

3., One of the most important ways students learn at college is by interacting with people who are different from themselves. I recall a freshman who wasn't sure if he would ft in at a new college far away from his hometown. However, one night he found himself debating about the characteristics that define a real hero with other admitted students from around the world. 4., but the differences were what made the conversation exciting, and he realized how much he could learn at a place full of engaging people with a wide range of viewpoints.

College teaches students the virtue of slowing down. No one denies the value of speed, connectivity and the virtual world in an economy that thrives (繁荣) on all three. But “thinking" is  a word that is too often forgotten. College teaches students to slow down, to change information into insight and knowing into understanding. 5.. The result is that students grow in knowledge and in wisdom for a lifetime.

To conclude, investing in a college or university education is well worth it.

A.College introduces students to a new world

B.Yet its value is being increasingly questioned

C.It remains the same nowadays

D.It develops critical thinking

E.They had a heated discussion

F.Not everyone agreed

G.College education financially pays off

It was early in 1981 when I first met George. I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet unrelated to the boredom of housework and raising little kids. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local TAFE painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years- -until the day he died.

George was a man who lived life to the full. He worked hard, played hard and had an opinion about everything. As a slim and energetic man, he took pride in his fitness and walked more than three kilometers every day. “I'd no more go without my walk than without changing my underwear. “He’d say.

As the only male in a painting class full of women, George ruled the roost and we were his hens. He adored his singular role and looked after his brood with the same attention he gave to everything.

He took to painting with passion and commitment, even changing the spare bedroom of his home into a studio. His painting equipment was comprehensive- an easel, quality paints, linseed oil, turpentine, brushes, palette, canvases, charcoal pencils, fixative, palette knives- even a rolling pin for removing air bubbles when gluing.

For about six years George and I studied together through various units until the completion of the course and other commitments drew us apart, though we always maintained personal contact as we lived within a couple of kilometers of each other. I'd sometimes see him on his daily walk or at the local shops and occasionally we' d touch base with a“proper”afternoon tea.

Fast-forward some years and George was now about 80 years old. He rang one day and asked me to come to his house, saying he needed to ask me something. George explained that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff". Everything- -paints, boards, canvases, completed works and rolling pin! “I can't paint, Bev.” He declared in the manner of a child who had to say farewell to his favorite toy.“ You have the best talent and are most likely to use it," he said.

After considerable persuasion, I accepted this precious gift on condition that he could reclaim it at any time. He never did, of course, and I still use much of his equipment today, more than 20 years later. As I paint, I often remember George and his big personality.

1.The friendship between George and the writer started because_________

A.they thought painting was characterized by creativity

B.they appreciated each other for their painting ability

C.they thought painting was a great way of killing time

D.they shared happiness in their local painting class

2.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 indicates that_________

A.George walked too hard to change his underwear

B.George viewed his walk as a great way to keep fit

C.George had his opinion of changing his underwear

D.George had to walk hard daily to live life to the full

3.The rolling pin is mentioned in Paragraph 4 to show that_________

A.George was passionate about painting

B.George was cautious about his painting

C.George was skilled with his painting

D.George was fond of its use in painting

4.Which of the following can NOT reflect George’s “big personality “in the last paragraph?

A.“He worked hard, played hard and had an opinion about everything" (Paragraph 2)

B.“As the only male ... George ruled the roost and we were his hens." (Paragraph 3)

C.“I’d sometimes see him on his daily walk .... afternoon tea." (Paragraph 5)

D.“He declared in the manner of a child who ... his favorite toy." (Paragraph 6)

Children with long-term health conditions, such as asthma (哮喘), may be at greater risk of developing a mental health disorder in early adolescence compared to healthy children, according to a new study.

The findings, published in the journal Development and Psychopathology, show that kids with chronic illness exhibit higher rates of mental problems at age 10, and these health issues continue to be associated with poor mental health at ages 13 and 15.

In the study, the research team reviewed a sample of approximately 7,000 children to investigate the occurrence of mental health disorders, including anxiety or depression, and chronic illness. They found that children with chronic health conditions were approximately twice as likely at 10 and at 13 to present with a mental health disorder than healthy children. At age 15, children with chronic health problems were 60% more likely to present with such disorders.

“Although the link between chronic health conditions and mental health problems in childhood has been made before, this study provides the strongest evidence of it to data in the years of late childhood and early adolescence," said study author Dr. Ann Marie Brady. “The difference chronic illness makes to mental health is concerning, and the first impact can be seen even before adolescence, in late childhood."

The researchers also found that bullying and health-related absence from school were two most significant additional factors for children with mental health issues. The second one was identified as the most consistent factor predicting mental health problems over time.

“If children with chronic illness are more likely to miss school, or experience bullying, that can make the situation worse. Keeping an eye on school attendance and looking out for evidence of bullying amongst those children may help to find out who are most at risk.", said Dr. Brady.

1.The underlined term “chronic illness" in Paragraph 2 refers to a kind of disease_________

A.causing a lot of deaths B.causing absent-mindedness

C.lasting for a long time D.leading to mental disorders

2.By the findings of this study, we know that_________

A.chronic illness leads to the mental health disorder in early adolescence

B.healthy young adolescents have no chance of having mental problems

C.adolescents with illness are more likely to develop mental health disorders

D.chronic illness has some relation to mental problems in early adolescence

3.What is special about this study?

A.It makes a new discovery based on the findings of previous studies

B.It draws a more accurate conclusion based on the previous studies

C.It questions the accuracy of the findings by the previous studies

D.It draws more attention to adolescents' health than previous studies

4.Which of the following can best help to decide if children with chronic illness tend to have mental problems?

A.Their school attendance. B.Their physical conditions.

C.Their tolerance of bullying. D.Their tendency for bullying.

The Happiest Place on Earth may soon be welcoming visitors again. On Wednesday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that Shanghai Disneyland will reopen on May 11. But one of the new safety measures is phased (分阶段的) reopening. This means Disney will begin by gradually and partially reopening certain locations.

If you've ever been to a Disney theme park, especially during peak days, you know how crowded it can get and how necessary FastPasses are. On a "normal day" at Disneyland, park attendance is 65,000 people, according to Walt Disney Imagineering director Kim Irvine. So physical distancing and capacity measures are major focuses as Disney prepares to reopen. Dr. Hymel says that Disney will "conduct physical distancing guidelines based on guidance from health authorities."

The new measures will likely include a guest capacity (容量) based on state and federal guidelines. Disney is also exploring ways technology can help with social distancing-experiments in this aspect include using virtual queues at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in advance.

Other new measures include increased cleaning of high traffic areas. Disney will follow guidelines from the medical community and the government for improved screening procedures and prevention measures; this means guests will likely need facial masks. Disney Parks have already adopted new measures such as providing hand soaps and setting up hand washing stations.

Shanghai Disneyland has sold out all tickets for May 11. The theme park said that all tickets were gone in a matter of minutes after sales started at 8 am on Friday.

1.In order to reopen, Disney has decided to take some measures EXCEPT_________

A.following guidance from authorities

B.advocating waiting in line for tickets

C.cleaning high traffic areas more often

D.providing convenience for hand-wash

2.This passage is mainly about _________

Artificial intelligence(AI)teachers can provide customized teaching for students to meet their unique requirements through analyzing data and deep learning. In the future, they may replace human teachers for basic teaching tasks.Since some students may find it and put new power into traditional teaching patterns. An educational system providing customized teaching centered on students represents the future trend of AI education.

China's AI education has developed rapidly in recent years with the rise of several thousand relevant companies.Currently,AI teachers are able to help students leamn pronunciation, analyze their condition, guide them to learn independently, and even grade writing assignments. Some foreign AI educational systems have been introduced into several domestic schools and have worked well on trial.

However, the promotion of AI education is still facing several difficulties in practice such as low technological levels, inadequacy of data and lack of funds.AI education still depends largely on human teachers' work. Most importantly,it conflicts with current educational patterns because the courses developed by foreign countries are not suitable for Chinese exam-oriented education.Teachers may also find it hard to change their original roles in classrooms since easing control on classes may make them seem irresponsible. These problems need to be handled before the mass promotion of Al education.

With AI teachers, the original teacher-centered classes will be transformed into student-centered ones where teachers only organize the class and provide guidance.Since teachers are supposed to not only equip students with knowledge but also shape their values and help them develop creative abilities,AI teachers will not replace human teachers but will only pose higher requirements of teaching.A combination of AI teachers and human ones can create the best future for Al education.

Lessons learned in past outbreaks

The novel coronavirus dominates(主导)the headlines as one of the world's most pressing issues. It has killed more people than the 2003 SARS outbreak, according to the World Health OrganizationWHO).1.?

One of the biggest lessons from SARS was to share the latest information about the virus with the public and other countries in the world as quickly as possible.,2.,allowing scientists around the world to start developing a vaccine(疫亩)on Jan 12,according to Xinhua.

With experiences of fighting against SARS and MERS,many countries were also better prepared to stop the spread of coronavirus.3..During the 2012 MERS outbreak, research showed that infected camels caused the outbreak.According to the WHO,strict measures were enacted(实施), restricting the sale of camels and camel products in the Arabian Peninsula. There were also mass health tests for all those in close contact with diseased animals.4.

In the fight against the novel coronavirus,China has also taken many effective measures to control the virus.Under the leadership and command of the central government, all provinces and municipalities(自治区)across the country have launched a Level One emergency response to the novel coronavirus.5..It is because of these effective measures that the epidemic has been constrained (限制)successfully within China, with the confirmed cases less than many other countries.

A.They also quickly isolated(隔离)those who were confirmed infected for medical care

B.Chinese health officials published the details of the new virus online

C.The number of infections overall in China are now far more than that of SARA

D.Following the measures, the number of the infected has dramatically decreased

E.The outbreak has killed many people since the first death was reported in Wuhan

F.But there is no better prevention than stopping the source

G.What can we learn from the past outbreaks, including SARS and MERS

Living gratefully has a huge transforming power, not just when something wonderful or special happens, but every day no matter what is happening.

I've recently been involved with two people whose lives were challenged by bad luck.I have seen how grateful living had the power to keep one of them going and how it's beginning to lift the other. One was a friend and the other is my sister.

My friend seemed to be in good health when she received a deadly diagnosis(诊断):a disease with no effective treatment. She had all the emotions that a tragedy(悲剧)brings, but she also had a powerful response to despair that gave her"the happiness that doesn't depend on what happens."She wrote online daily, honestly sharing the details of her situation.

She wrote that even though it was difficult to move, this gave her more time to notice small things.

She was grateful not only for the love and help of family and friends, but also for time to see the sun rise and watch the birds in her yard.No opportunity for gratefulness was wasted.

She taught that gratefulness is not a false cheerfulness. It's taking every opportunity to celebrate the blessings of small things. We can be grateful for the challenges that help us develop compassion(同情)for each other.Life is a precious gift.

She repeatedly blogged(写博客)that she was happier than she had ever been.

When she wrote about"the worst day",she ended with"life is still a lovely gift."She died later that day.

Her message, however, changed my sister's life.My sister's health was getting worse and worse, though nothing life-threatening.She did have a very painful knee. Her life was in danger from her defeated spirit. She was bedbound(卧床不起),getting weaker and weaker.Fearful, angry and depressed, she felt out of options for recovery.

I read my sister a few of my friend's messages.I was careful not to say,"Why can't you be more like her?"Instead,I let the words do their work.I'm grateful to say that an attitude of gratitude began to replace her anger and fear.I believe this helped her to heal.

We can't be grateful for all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness for all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness for life itself, for all we can learn to deal with, for all the ways we can help each other grow and heal.

1.How did the author's sister feel when she was ill?

A.calm.

B.lonely.

C.sad.

D.confused.

2.What happened when the author's friend found she had an incurable disease?

A.She complained that life was unfair to her.

B.She started to appreciate and enjoy the small things in life.

C.She tried her best to look for treatment.

D.She repeatedly blogged about how painful it was.

3.What message does the article mainly convey?

A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

B.Gratitude has the power of lifting people's spirits.

C.Health is the most important thing for people.

D.Families will always be there no matter what happens.

You know the old phrase,"Practice makes perfect."That may not always be true.According to a recent study published in Royal Society Open Science, there are other factors for reaching elite(最优秀的)levels of ability.

The researchers set out to replicate(复制)the process of a new-famous 1993 study of top-level violinists and pianists. On average, the earlier study found that top-ranked musicians had clocked over 10,000 hours of practice by the age of 20.It put their success down to the hours spent practicing, downplaying the importance of natural, learning skills and other factors.

Author Malcolm Gladwell later relied on this study for his 2008 book,Outliers. He called 10,000 hours"the magic number of greatness”.

Questioning this conclusion,Brooke Macnamara and Megha Maitra, from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio,US,sought volunteers to put the 10,000-hour rule to the test.

The pair organized violinists into three groups, based on whether their tutors rated them as the best players, good players,or average players. They were then told to record how long they practiced every week.

They found that the“average”players had around 6,000 hours of practice. However, there was little separating the good from the best musicians. Both groups had approximately 11,000 hours of practice by the age of 20.In all,the number of hours spent practicing accounted for about a quarter of the skill difference across the three groups.

Once you get to the highly skilled groups, practice stops accounting for the difference,"Mannamara told the Guardian."Smaller factors then determine who goes on to that superelite level."

The factors depend on the skill being learned:in chess it could be intelligence or working memory,in sport it may be how efficiently a person use oxygen,"she said. She also pointed out the factor of motivation and the interactions of different factors.

Ralf Krampe,a co-author of the 1993 study, disagrees, saying the quality of practice and teaching does matter.“....I still consider deliberate(刻意的)practice to be by far the most important factor,"he told the Guardian.

It should be said that neither side discounts the value of making an effort.Even if you aren't destined(命中注定)to be the world's greatest violinist, practice will make you a little bit better than you were yesterday.

1.What can we learn from the 1993 study?

A.The 10.000-hour rule applies to everything.

B.Natural talent is particularly important for musicians.

C.Practice is the key to mastering a skill.

D.It's better to learn an instrument at a young age.

2.What did the study by Macnamara and Maitra find?

A.The three groups of violinists varied a lot in their practice times.

B.The mastering of different skills required different hours of practice.

C.Motivation and talent determined whether one could become an elite violinist.

D.Practice time didn't make much difference between"the best"and"good"violinists.

3.The underlined word"discount"probably means

A.prove B.ignore

C.recognize D.consider

If you walk through a park, you may enjoy the scents(气味)of flowers, water and soil.If you are especially lucky, you will get to smell fresh-cut grass. It's a beloved scent that transports many people back to their childhood. But there's a dark side to that smell.Indeed,we are in love with the scent of fear.

Plants have many different chemical defenses. That smell is one of them,as the grass responds to an attack,signaling(......示意)to the surrounding grass that danger is coming. The fresh,"green”scent of a just-mowed lawn is the lawn trying to save itself, says a story at science website Real-Clear Science.

The smell is produced by a mix of chemicals called green leaf volatiles(GLVs,绿叶挥发物).When the leafy plants are injured by animals eating them, people cutting them, or any other rough treatment-they give off GLVs into the air. These GLVs are a warning to neighbouring plants that their flowers might be removed,so they can move resources like sugar toward their roots and away from their flowers. This reduces a plant's potential losses and can help it grow back later.

The rush of GLVs does a few other things, too. One chemical helps to close the wound on the damaged plant.Others act as antibiotics(抗生素)and prevent bacterial infections.

Some GLVs may also react with animals that eat plants.Silke All-mann and Ian T.Baldwin, researchers from the University of Amsterdam,Netherlands, found that some caterpillars(毛虫)are changed by the GLV compounds(化合物)when they eat a tobacco plant.Tobacco makes the caterpillars more attractive to predators(捕食者).For the tobacco plants, this is like having an older brother come to beat up your bully(欺凌者).

Thankfully, nothing is coming to eat you when you mow the lawn.Instead,we human get treated to some great-smelling GLVs.One is a compound known as"cis-3-hexenal".This is the same chemical that gives strawberries their sweet scent.Similar compounds are also found in apples and olives.

Just about all fresh vegetables have some GLV scents to them,"Baldwin told Live Science, and fruits may release the compounds as they soften."Throughout evolutionary history,we've used that information to know when something is ripe,"Baldwin said. Now we can use it to know when grass is frightened.

1.What do we know about GLVs?

A.They are harmful to humans. B.They are unique to flowering plants.

C.They tend to stay in the air for a long time. D.They are released when plants get hurt.

2.How may plants react to the GLVs produced by neighbouring plants?

A.They grow more quickly. B.They produce more flowers.

C.They absorb more water. D.They transport resources to their roots.

3.In paragraph5,the underlined part"an older brother"refers to

A.a kind of antibiotic B.a predator. C.a caterpillar. D.a tobacco plant.

4.According to Baldwin,GLVs can

A.tell us whether fruits are ready to eat. B.protect plants from pests.

C.help fruits grow more quickly. D.help people choose delicious fruits.

The topic we were talking about was the different between Chinese festivals and Western ones. Most students compared the Spring Festival to Christmas and others chose the Mid-Autumn Festival or Thanksgiving Day as a match.

As we had been talked too many, all of us got quite thirsty. Seeing this, our teacher took some bottles of water from hers car and handed them out to us. What timely offer! Thank you, my dear teacher!

Concerts should be a fun and enjoyable occasion for everyone attending them, including the musicians. No matter what type of concert one is attending, he is still expected to follow the rules of concert etiquette(礼仪).1.

Classical music concerts are often events when concert etiquette is considered to be very important. One should generally arrive a few minutes before the show starts, so he can be in his seat at the beginning of the first musical performance.
