When I was a little girl, I remember that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.

I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.

Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend.

One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams.

After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.

Craziest Food Festivals sounds like a joke topic, but once you start looking into it, you’ll realize they’re everywhere---the crazier, the better.

1. Bibimbap Festival

In the South Korean town of Jeonjuloves, their “mixed rice” dish is a hearty serve of rice topped with raw beef, a rainbow of vegetables, a raw egg and gochujang sauce so much. They take four days out of October to celebrate it.

3. Bessieres Easter Egg Festival

At Easter time, for those in the French town of Bessieres it’s all about an egg far less sweet.

Here they celebrate the holiday by getting dozens of chefs to make one large omelette (煎蛋卷) - 15,000 eggs strong - for the townsfolk (市民).

Creativity is the process of taking an idea and applying it in real life, if we aren’t creative, we can't think outside the box and question what we can do.

Asking questions is a good way of sparking creativity.

First, we can ask learners questions that have more than one possible answer.

In science: “How many ways can you find to empty a glass of water without touching it? ”

In any subject:  “What else would you like to know? How do you know that is true? Is there another way of doing this?”

Second, we can encourage learners to invent their own questions, We can do this for a topic that students are familiar with in their study. Firstly, discuss what makes a good question Secondly, create questions by grouping questions into different types--open, closed, or one that challenges the imagination. Finally, put those questions in order according to their importance.

Our teachers encourage us to ask questions and not accept the standard answers without Reasoning(推理). Our school has some activities annually to inspire creativity in every student. Our teachers encourage us to be creative and think of solutions for real-world problems. On the whole, the freedom of being allowed to be ourselves is what brings out the best in our creativity.

Hearing the bell ring, I got up, quickly dressed me and ran onto the playground. A few minute later, more people came. They worked out for various ways. Some ran around the track. Some played basketball, tried to shoot baskets. A group of girls were walking on the balance beam in the turn. A couple of strongly-built boys made graceful movements on the flying rings. However, dozens of old men and women showed up, some of which did Taiji. At exact 6:30, music came for people to do exercise to radio music. For ten minutes all the people on the playground are seen bending down and straightening up, turning left and right. It’s really a beautiful sight look at!

Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are increasing. 1. Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For example, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation for now. 2. Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening. 3. Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without getting things ugly. 4. How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-maker—they’re interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping—just like their teenagers!

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 5. You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

A. You may consider seeking outside help.

B. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say.

C. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.

D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

E. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.

F. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.

G. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you.

It often happens that a number of applicants with almost identical qualifications and experience all apply for the same position. In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates. How then does the employer make a choice? Usually on the basis of an interview.

There are many arguments about the interview as a selection procedure. One argument is that it gives rise to a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choose the best candidate, but the one who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to this argument by saying that they have become so experienced in interviewing staff that they are able to make a sound assessment of each candidate’s likely performance. Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well, but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees.

Those in favour of the interview insist that the well-structured procedure is valid in assessing a candidate’s ability, an essential guarantee for the future job. They also argue that an employer is concerned not only with a candidate’s ability, but with the suitability of his or her personality for the particular work situation. Many employers, for example, will overlook occasional inefficiencies from their secretary so long as she has a pleasant personality. Perhaps the real purpose of an interview is not to assess the assessable aspects of each candidate but to make a guess at the more intangible things, such as personality and social ability.

Today, interview is still a common section of the entire selection procedure, though different employers have different standards for competence. Generally speaking, candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful; direct and straight-forward in their questions and answers; cheerful and friendly, but never over-familiar; and sincerely enthusiastic and optimistic. Candidates who interview badly tend to be at either end of the spectrum of human behaviour. They are either very shy or over-confident. They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess of it. They either talk too little or never stop talking. They are either over-polite or rudely abrupt.

1.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Employers are experienced in assessing the interviewees’ performance.

B.Interview is not always recognized as a sensible way to choose employees.

C.The interview helps the employers to pick the desired employees.

D.The remarkable candidates often distinguish themselves in an interview.

2.Which may not be considered in an interview?

A.Personality B.Communication skills

C.Background D.Capability

3.What is the author’s attitude towards the interview as a selection procedure?

A.Supportive B.Negative

C.Objective D.Unconcerned

4.The last paragraph indicates _________________.

A.a link between success in interview and character

B.connections between work abilities and character

C.differences in interview experience

D.differences in personal behaviour

I used to think the whole purpose of life was pursuing happiness. Everyone said the path to happiness was success, so I searched for that ideal job, that perfect boyfriend, and that beautiful apartment. But instead of ever feeling fulfilled, I felt anxious and lost. Eventually. I decided to go to graduate school for positive psychology to learn what truly makes people happy.

And what's the difference between being happy and having meaning in life? Many psychologists describe happiness as a state of comfort and ease, feeling good in the moment. Meaning, though, is deeper. The famous psychologist Martin Seligman says meaning comes from belonging to and serving something beyond yourself and from developing the best within you. Our culture is obsessed with happiness, but I came to see that seeking meaning is the more fulfilling path.

There are four pillars of a meaningful life.

The first pillar is belonging. Belonging comes from being in relationships where you're valued for who you are and where you value others as well. For many people, belonging is the most essential source of meaning.

For others, the key to meaning is the second pillar: purpose. Finding your purpose is not the same thing as finding that job that makes you happy. A doctor told me her purpose is healing sick people. Many parents tell me, “My purpose is raising my children.” The key to purpose is using your strengths to serve others. Without something worthwhile to do, people flounder, thus losing the aim of life.

The third pillar of meaning is also about stepping beyond yourself, but in a completely different way: transcendence (超然). Transcendent experiences can change you. Transcendent states are those rare moments when you're lifted above the hustle and bustle of daily life, your sense of self fades away, and you feel connected to a higher reality. For me, I’m a writer, and it happens through writing. Sometimes I get so in the zone that I lose all sense of time and place.

The fourth pillar is storytelling, the story you tell yourself about yourself. Creating a narrative from the events of your life brings clarity. It helps you understand how you became you. But we don’t always realize that we're the authors of our stories and can change the way we’re telling them. Your life isn't just a list of events. You can edit, interpret and retell your story, even as you're constrained by the facts.

That’s the power of meaning. Happiness comes and goes. But when life is really good and when things are really bad, having meaning gives you something to hold on to.

1.What can we know from the first two paragraphs

A.Life might be fulfilled by landing ideal jobs

B.Life dilemma is challenging for us to get out of

C.Meaning is highly valued in our culture

D.Happiness is what most people try to achieve

2.Which word is the closest to the underlined word?

A.Confused B.Distracted

C.Disappointed D.Saddened

3.Which pillar can describe an artist obsessed with her work despite repeated failures?

A.Belonging B.Purpose

C.Transcendence D.Storytelling

4.The passage aims to tell us that _______________

A.meaning is superior to happiness

B.meaning is the way to success

C.chasing meaning can make people happy

D.meaning has deeper psychological significance

The cracked step four years ago was the start of it. That day, I awoke tired—the children were tiny and needing so much—and I had a golden afternoon of rest ahead, my mother stepping in to allow me to catch up on my sleep. I dropped them off and drove home—the sun shining and my bed signaling. As I was about to enter the house, I caught sight of a deep crack beneath my feet.

Without thinking, I turned around, walked back to the car and drove to a DIY store. Four hours later, I had all the tools, mixed my own cement, filled in the crack and repaired the foundation. Perfect. As I stood up to take a photo of my handiwork, I realized that I was trembling. I’d forgotten my shot at a nice long nap, and my children were already on their way home. That sleep... that promise to self was broken, because I had focused, instead, on the crack in the step.

Suddenly, everything started to hurt. My head, my throat, my back. I couldn’t stop shaking. What earned then is that when we break the promises we make to our bodies they will not be silenced. This is when we overwork and overthink to the point of breaking down. Ironically (讽刺地), for many of us, it is only when we have no choice— when we fall ill—that we learn to listen. For me, when that crack ended in a hospital stay which sent me to bed for two unmoving weeks when my body worked to clear two different infections, the lesson is ever present.     The biggest complaint I hear is, “I don’t have enough time.” Trust me — I get it! So here are five simple tips to keep you consistently working out.

1. Schedule it.

1. I mean it. Open up your calendar and schedule it into your day. This makes sure you do have the time each day.

2. Keep your scheduled appointment.

Now that your exercise is scheduled, keep your appointment!2. Your health and happiness is just as important as any other appointment. Honour yourself.

3. Exercise first thing in the morning.

Most of us don’t have business meetings and doctors’ appointments at 5:30 a.m. This is prime time to get your workouts done.3. But after two weeks you get used to it. I promise!

4. Mix up your workouts.

Day one, do a HIIT workout. Day two, lift heavy weights. Day three, increase joint mobility with yoga. Boredom is one of the biggest reasons why people don't stick with an exercise program. Don’t wake up and run every day. 4..

5. Make it fun.

The more fun you have while exercising, the more likely you are to do it. On weekends go for a long bike ride or hike with your family. Or, do your normal exercise routine with your family.5. I also do yoga once a week with my husband. We look forward to this date.

There you have it – five simple tips to keep workouts consistent(坚持). The better the consistency, the better the results!

A. You have got to mix it up.

B. Don't change it or schedule it again.

C. On the weekends I work out with my girls.

D. Busy people must schedule their workouts.

E. I hardly spare a day to relax during a week.

F. You had better force yourself to work out each day.

G. I understand morning workouts sound cruel to most people.

I was sitting in a fast food restaurant with my two children, who at the time were about 6 and 9. Inside there was also a group of teens in goth(粗野的)dress and appearance. Everyone kept away from them inside the restaurant.

Outside the restaurant, the same people jumped past the homeless man searching the garbage bin, who was looking for food or perhaps a cigarette. I too had rushed past him with my youngsters, refusing his request for money but thinking maybe, just maybe, I would bring him some food. It turns out I didn't have to.

One of the goth youths jumped up, went to the counter and ordered more food, which she then took outside to the homeless man and sat on the bench with him, chatting away as he ate. He didn’t say much — he was greedy — but I think I saw a bit of a smile and a glint in his eyes as he nodded to her questions.

Writing this now, several years later I still choke up. That girl was a model citizen living the values of goodness and kindness. These are values I have always held high and hoped to teach my kids. She made my job much easier. We stopped by on our way out and thanked her for setting such a positive example for us. I hope that hearing that made as much of a difference in her life as seeing what she did has made to ours.

2.What did the man want the author to do?

A.Help him get money. B.Bring him some food.

A.flash B.gloom

C.surprise D.happiness

4.What can we learn about the author from the passage?

A.The author is also a model citizen like the girl.

B.The author sets a good example for the girl.

C.The author is deeply moved by the girl.

D.The author has sympathy for the girl.

Darshan Karwat is making headlines for having maintained an incredibly plain and continued lifestyle during his student years. The man gave up fast food, new clothes, and even toilet paper, until he got to a point where his trash(垃圾)for an entire year fit in just two plastic bags!

Karwat, who is originally from India, started the trash-free experiment when he lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and managed to keep it going for two and a half years. In the first year, he produced only 7.5 pounds of trash, and in the second year, he brought that number down to 6 pounds, which is a mind-blowing 0.4 percent of the 1,500 pounds of yearly trash produced by the average American.

Looking back, Karwat says that his inspiration to start the project came from a radio show The Story, on which he heard of a British couple who lived trash-free.

His trash mostly consisted of a few chip bags, glass milk-bottle caps, fruit stickers, and broken glass. He obviously had to make lots of sacrifices to achieve this – he stopped buying any kind of packaged food including cheeses, only drank milk from recycled glass bottles, and gave up on buying new clothes or stuff for his home – no gadgets, furniture, or even cups. He began carrying his own fork, spoon, plate, and a bowl everywhere he went, just to avoid plastic cutlery(餐具).

“I needed to change the way I lived, and I had to get creative,” he added. “When a restaurant furnished a napkin-wrapped(包纸的)fork and knife, I asked the server to change them for cutlery without the napkin. I’d remember to say “No straw!” after asking for water and to make sure the veggie(素食者)burger I ordered didn’t come with a wooden pick holding it together. I did what I had to do, and it was awkward.”

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.How a person inspires others

B.How Darshan Karwat gets famous.

C.Darshan Karwat and his no trash experiment.

D.A plain and sustainable lifestyle attracts the public.

2.Why did Darshan Karwat have the idea of living trash-free?

A.Because he is from India.

B.Because he has been in university.

C.Because he heard a story on the radio.

D.Because a British couple reminded to do so.

3.What did Karwat buy when he was making no-trash experiment?

A.Cheeses. B.Furniture.

C.Milk. D.Gadgets.

4.What Karwat said in the last paragraph shows that       .

A.he seldom went to a restaurant

B.it wasn’t convenient to live the life

C.the server seemed cold to him

D.he was proud of what he had been doing

Taking breaks while studying contributes to better learning in a number of ways, and creates a major impact on the process of learning. Find out why a study break is essential, and how it helps you score the best.

Scientists conclude that the brain stops registering a constant stimulation over a gradual period of time, and declares it to be unimportant. The brain decodes(译)a monotonous(单调的)activity and gets habituated to it, no longer stimulating the brain to act in any way. Once this happens, you find yourself unable to concentrate, there by destroying the purpose of a study session-learning. A “break” does just that, it breaks the monotony for the brain. A change in place, a walk around the block, a cup of coffee; these little things can be limited in your study sessions to relax the mind, break the monotony, improve concentration levels, and finally assist the learning process.

The purpose of a study session is to study as much as possible and remember most of what has been learned in it. To be able to achieve this, it is absolutely necessary to continuously stay focused. It is highly likely that long hours of studying can become monotonous and cause you to believe that you are “learning”, when you are only just “reading”. A short rest eases out your stressed mind, brings you back on track, and allows you to start studying with new-found focus levels.

With a relaxed mind, improved concentration and focus levels, and a better capacity to retain information, it is obvious that your study session with breaks will turn out to be more productive, and you will get more benefits than you previously did. Put more such better-yielding study sessions together, and what do you get? perfect grades and a winner of the “race”.

1.What can the underlined word “habituated” in the second paragraph be replaced by?

A.Accustomed. B.Absorbed.

C.Attached. D.Related.

2.What should students do to study as much as possible?

A.Help each other. B.Remain concentrated.

C.Improve ways of learning. D.Give up the learning process.

3.If you have a good attitude to study, how your study will be?

A.Efficient. B.Improved. C.Interesting. D.Easy.

4.What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Students should concentrate on their study.

B.Students should take breaks after learning for long hours.

C.Teachers had better have a good rest before their lessons.

D.Teachers had better be strict with their students in learning ways.
