The best advice I received in my childhood was from my dad. He always gives me some advice, but I seldom took them seriously. One day he encouraged me to participate in a speech competition. So I signed up and after the competition, I did my best to be full prepared. But the moment when I stood on the stage, I was such nervous that my mind completely went blank.

The experience of lose a competition was really painful. Then, my dad said, “My son, life is like battlefield. You have to lose many time to win the final victory.” Thanks for his advice, I will never give up when I do anything.

How to be a Good Listener

Being a good listener can help you see the world through the eyes of others. 1. Good listening skills can provide you with a deeper level of understanding about someone’s situation. If you want to know how to be a good listener, read on to get started.

1. Place yourself in other people’s shoes It’s easy to only consider the impact of the other person’s “telling” on you. But you must open out and look at the problems from the other person’s view. 2.

2. Avoid comparing the person’s experiences to your own. You may think that the best thing you can do to really listen is to compare the person’s experiences to your own. But this type of thinking actually makes the person feel like you’re not really listening at all. 3. That means that you’re focusing more on yourself than on the person’s situation.

3. 4. Some people think that, when they’re listening, they should find a quick and easy solution to the person’s problem. According to the research, it is totally wrong to do so. Instead focus on absorbing everything the person is saying to you. Only after that can you really try to help.

4. Know what not to do. Knowing what to avoid when you’re trying to be a good listener can be almost as helpful as knowing what to do. If you want the speaker to take you seriously you’d better not interrupt in the middle of a point. 5. Make eye contact with the person so that he or she realizes that you are listening with interest.

A.Don’t try to help immediately.

B.Avoid saying “I” or “me” a lot.

C.Try to solve the person’s problem quickly.

D.Don’t try to change the subject even if it’s a little uncomfortable.

E.If so, you would see your way through the problems much faster.

F.Therefore you’d better listen to what the person is saying carefully.

G.It enriches your understanding and expands your capacity for empathy (同情).

Many science fiction stories tell about explorers arriving in a new world. The explorers then use some kind of high-tech device to test for breathable air or signs of life. But here on Earth, science fiction is becoming reality through a new sampling technology called environmental DNA, or e-DNA for short. Scientists can use it to identify rare species or estimate fish populations with just a little air or water.

Environmental DNA can be used in two ways. One is to identify the creatures that live in a certain place. The other is to confirm the presence or lack of a specific creature.

Caren Goldberg is one of the first biologists in the northwestern United States to take the technology from the testing stage to actually using it. She sees e-DNA as a way to get answers more efficiently, and with less destruction compared to traditional survey techniques. Until recently, scientists depended on diving deep, netting or using an electric current to temporarily catch fish.

This newer way to identify what lives in the environment is becoming popular around the world. Animal experts in Vietnam are using the e-DNA to find the last, wild Yangtze giant softshell turtles. One researcher on the Caribbean island of Trinidad is using the sampling technology to find endangered golden tree-frogs. And in Madagascar, it is being used to identify amphibian (两栖动物) diseases.

Ms. Goldberg has used e-DNA testing to confirm the local extinction of a leopard frog in the American state of Idaho. She has also been asked to document the spread of the New Zealand mud-snail in the state of Washington. The creature has been found in lakes and other waterways across the state.

Scientists working with the technology say they do not expect robots to replace field biologists anytime soon. But the old-fashioned field work could soon be more targeted.

1.By using e-DNA, Caren Goldberg has ________.

A.succeeded in catching many fishes.

B.found the existence of golden treefrogs.

C.documented the spread of softshell turtles.

D.proved the disappearance of the leopard frog in Idaho.

2.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Robots will replace scientists soon.

B.Some scientists are against using e-DNA.

C.The old-fashioned field work may disappear.

D.Many biologists are unwilling to do the field work.

3.The passage can be sorted as a(n) ________.

A.science fiction B.experiment report

C.science report D.bio-diversity discovery

I have received many Christmas gifts over the years. The best gift I ever received was presented to me by a stranger. I never even knew his name and I only had contact with him for less than 60 seconds. His Christmas present to me changed the way I think about people and about Christmas.

It was several years ago when my wife asked me to meet her at the local department store on Black Friday morning. They had advertised a child’s bike that she wanted to purchase for our son. We stood with a very large crowd, waiting for the manager to blow the whistle. I told my wife that if we got a bike, fine, but if we did not, I was OK with that too.

As the shelf of bikes began to gradually decrease in size, I saw my polite opportunity to wrap my hands around the corner of one of the boxes. I lifted it off the box and suddenly felt some mild resistance. I looked up to see one of the largest gentlemen I had ever seen in my life. Threat was not the word to describe his presence. He was decorated with numerous belts of metal pointed leather around both arms and even his neck. Tattoos (纹身) were an obvious passion of his.

I started to return anxiously the box but he gently pushed it back in my direction and back into my hands. He then directed it into my shopping cart. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “Merry Christmas.” My wife and I went to the checkout, paid for the bike and went home. All the way home I was thinking that this moment was by far the best Christmas gift I had ever received. The kindness of a stranger that broke all previous views I may have had of stereotypes and prejudices. I will never forget the tenderness of a human heart in a simple act.

1.Why does the author see the gift as best?

A.Because it was given by a stranger. B.Because it was donated by a charity.

C.Because it improved his level of living. D.Because it changed his way of thinking.

2.What is the attitude of the author towards whether to get a bike or not?

A.He is eager for it. B.It doesn’t matter.

C.It depends on its price. D.He doesn’t like it at all.

3.What can we infer about the stranger mentioned in the text?

A.Strong and kind. B.Tall and cautious.

C.Lovely and energetic. D.Handsome and polite.

4.What may be the best title of the passage?

A.A True Gentleman I Met B.The Best Gift I Ever Received

C.A Choice That Changed My View D.A Stranger Who Gave Me a Gift

My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症) last summer. Suddenly, it was difficult for me to accept that the roles were now changed — my mother became my child, and I became her mother. I became impatient, argued with her, once I even yelled at her. Gradually, I was used to this kind of life. Now I am able to deal with her and the situation better. I have learned a lot of life lessons from the experience.

My mother reacts very sensitively to my feelings. That is typical of Alzheimer’s patients. When I visit her, feeling hectic and tense, she reacts immediately, takes on my mood, and becomes nervous and negative. But when I appear cheerful and attentive, she is happy. This has taught me to pay more attention to my own feelings when I am with other people.

Through the illness my mother has developed a childlike tactlessness (不得体). Eating out in restaurants, for example, is a bit embarrassing when she shouts at the waiter that the food is so bad or talks about people at the next table in a loud voice. Of course I make sure that my mother doesn’t hurt anyone, but I’ve stopped complaining about others and have become more tolerant.

I have also learned that everything has special value. When my mother got sick I didn’t want to burden my two daughters with it. They are young and have enough going on with their education, and starting their careers. I felt that it was simply my job as my mother’s daughter. The most wonderful discovery I’ve made through my mother’s disease may be that my children not only offer to help me, but that they take care of my mother on their own actively. They visit her often, play cards with her, and look at photo albums together with her. It shows me that it’s all worth it.

3.What can we know about the writer’s daughters according to the passage?

A.They are naughty. B.They are considerate.

C.They are traditional. D.They are selfish.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.How I Cared for My Sick Mother. B.How I Became More Tolerant.

C.What I Have Learned from Alzheimer’s. D.Why I Am Feeling stressed.

Does the Body Burn Fat When You Are Hungry?

Your body stores fat as a way to help protect you against starvation if you can’t take in enough food. However, your fat reserve isn’t the first place your body goes for food. Instead, it reaches out for sugar for energy. 1.

Hunger is normally a reflection that your body has used up energy from recent food you ate and has moved onto getting energy from sugar in your blood. 2. The more sugar you take in, the more fuel your body has to use before it reaches out to the fat stores. If your body doesn’t have enough sugar to supply the energy it needs, it begins to burn fat when you’re hungry instead.

Missing meals and going hungry can change your metabolism (新陈代谢) so it stores fat instead of burning it. 3. However, if you skip meals for several days and severely lower your calorie (卡路里) intake, your body begins to store as much fat as possible.

4. Your body burns up sugar stored in your system and begins to burn fat as you continue to exercise. However, exercising when you’re hungry won’t help you burn fat faster. A recent study shows that the body burns the same amount of fat regardless of whether you are hungry when you exercise.

Staying hungry all day won’t necessarily help you burn fat, but cutting calories is key to losing weight. 5. Snack (吃点心) in between meals to keep your metabolism working all day, which helps it burn more fat than if it’s allowed to slow down when it’s not meal time. Snacking in between meals can help you control your meal sizes at meal time.

A. Exercise is key to burning fat.

B. You shouldn’t cut out food to cut calories.

C. This doesn’t happen in a day of missing meals.

D. Just being hungry doesn’t mean your body is burning fat.

E. If you take in less food than your body burns, you’ll lose weight.

F. Your body stores sugar in case you need it when you feel hungry.

G. Eat five or six small meals throughout the day instead of three large ones.

Not all bad emotions (情感) are necessarily bad. In fact, they can direct your behaviour in useful ways. If you’re stuck in traffic, anger with the situation might motivate you to find an alternative route (线路), which will then relieve your stress. But anger is less useful if you’re in the same situation, but stuck on a motorway with no option to alter directions.

Emotions have physiological effects, such as raising the level of cortisol in your bloodstream, which can affect your health. Indeed, a new study, published in Psychology and Aging, shows that high levels of anger are associated with poor health in older people.

The Canadian study did the study on 226 adults aged 59-93. They took blood samples to assess levels of chronic (慢性的) low-grade inflammation (炎症) and asked the participants to report any age-related chronic illnesses they might have. The participants also completed a short questionnaire about the level of anger or sadness they experienced in three typical days over a one-week period.

For the analysis, the researchers considered whether age could affect the results. They found that higher levels of anger were associated with inflammation and ill health in the oldest participants (aged 80 and above), but not the youngest ones (59-79 years). Sadness was not associated with inflammation or ill health in either age group.

The study is cross-sectional, meaning that it assessed a group of people at a single point in time. To get a fuller understanding of the relationship between bad emotions and health, we need studies that follow participants for a period of time — so-called prospective observation studies. Future studies should also take into account other factors that might relate, such as other emotions, stress and personality.

Although this new research shows a link between emotion and health in older age, we do not know whether anger causes inflammation and illness or whether health problems make people angrier.

1.What does the underlined word “alter” in paragraph 1 mean?

A.Change. B.Control.

C.Measure. D.Operate.

2.Why were participants taken blood samples?

A.To analyze their levels of health.

B.To fill in the form of questionnaires.

C.To know the levels of some inflammation.

D.To compare the change of anger in three days.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Anger is the greatest danger to health.

B.The influence of anger on illness is unclear.

C.People in poor health are easy to get angry.

D.Evidence is needed to prove the effect of health.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Adjusting Our Emotions Is Necessary

B.Bad Emotions Affect People’s Feelings

C.New Conclusions Make People Amazed

D.Anger Is Linked to Illness in Old Age

Researchers in Singapore found that eating mushrooms over twice per week could help prevent memory and language problems later in life.

According to the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, there is a unique antioxidant (抗氧化物质) present in mushrooms that helps protect certain brain functions.

Researchers observed 663 Chinese adults aged over 60 whose diets and lifestyles were tracked from 2011 to 2017. In the study, the participants were asked how often they ate six different types of mushrooms: oyster, shiitake, white button, dried, golden and tinned. The findings showed that eating more than two shares of mushrooms per week somehow lowered the chances of mild cognitive impairment (MCi) by 50% against those who ate fewer than one share.

MCI is a condition that can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and finding the exact position of objects in space. Changes in behavior can be not very noticeable and not serious enough to be known as dementia (痴呆).

Participants who ate more mushrooms were found to perform better in thinking and processing exams and also exhibited a faster processing speed. The advantage was reportedly more apparent in those who ate more than two shares a week or more than 300 grams.

The scientists pointed out, however, that they have yet to put up a direct link between the fungi and brain function.

The researchers also acknowledged that since this study mainly relied on self-reported information on mushroom intake and other dietary factors (因素), further studies may be required.

Still, the lead study author Lei Feng is encouraged by their findings.

“This correlation is surprising and encouraging,” Lei said.

Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources of ergothioneine — a matter which humans can’t make on our own.

At 24, Tiffany Calver might worry she has already peaked (达到顶峰) as a DJ. She began DJing as a hobby, uploading mixes to her SoundCloud. Her high-energy selections soon caught the ears of the online station Radar Radio and then Drake’ s management, leading her to land many firsts.

“I just want to express myself,” she says. “I’m not interested in copying anyone else’s work; I have to be me. I love artists such as Kojey Radical whose lyrics (歌词) are so aware of human experiences. There are also great examples set by artists from the older generation like Ghetts. Ghetts actually cooperated with Kojey on Black Rose, which is all about colourism — prejudice against darker-skinned women — a huge problem in the black community (团体).”

“It’s really exciting to see the BBC taking notice of a new generation of tastemakers in our community. I remember a time when there was no place for younger voices. Snoochie Shy is taking on the 1Xtra rap (说唱) from Monday to Thursday and Charlie Sloth is being replaced by two women, which is huge for one of the biggest radio stations in the country. I think it’ll have a big effect and encourage more women to follow suit.”

“It was great to hear women such as Rico Nasty, who is aggressive, succeed last year because, even as a DJ, I hate it when people tell me I have to ‘play something for the ladies’. There’s such a rich history of unapologetic women in hip-hop, from Lil’ Kim to Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. Even rappers such as Noname, who might not have as much of an aggressive sound but can talk about politics in the same song, are not afraid to show all the layers there are to being a woman. It isn’t just soft and feminine.”

1.We learn from paragraph 2 that Kojey Radical and Ghetts ________.

A.are a new generation B.are in the same station

C.dare to express themselves D.live in the same community

2.What does Calver think of Charlie Sloth’s replacement?

A.She feels it is unbelievable. B.It is a heavy blow for many men.

C.It allows women to change jobs. D.She holds positive attitude towards it.

3.Which of the following words can describe the women mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.Brave. B.Creative.

C.Selfless. D.Considerate.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.The success in music. B.The new voice of rap.

C.The different trend in DJ. D.The influence of a woman.

Why Don’t Students Like School?

Most of the teachers I know entered the job because they loved school as children. 1. However, they are understandably discouraged when they find that some of their students don’t like school much, and that they, the teachers, have great difficulty inspiring them. Why is it difficult to make school enjoyable for students?

As a matter of fact , the brain is not designed for thinking. It’s designed to ask you not to have to think, because the brain is actually not very good at thinking. Thinking is slow and unreliable. 2.People like to solve problems, but they do not like to work on problems that cannot be solved. If schoolwork is always just a bit too difficult for a student, it should be no surprise that he doesn’t like school much.3.

What is the nature of being human? 4. Many people would answer that it is our ability to reason that makes us different—birds can fly, fish can swim, and humans can think . (By thinking I mean solving problems, reasoning, reading something complex, or doing any mental work that requires some effort.)  Shakespeare thought highly of our cognitive(认知) ability in Hamlet: “What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason!” Some three hundred years later, however, Henry Ford came up with a quite different opinion, “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is the probable reason why so few people are interested in it.” They both had a point of view. Humans are good at certain types of reasoning, especially compared to other animals, but we hardly often exercise those abilities. 5.Thinking is not only painful, as Ford noted, it’s also slow and unreliable.

A. A cognitive scientist would add another point of view, “Humans don’t think very often because our brains are designed not for thought but for escaping from thought.”

B. What sets us apart from other species?

C. Of course you could make each decision with care and thought.

D. However, people enjoy thinking if it is successful.

E. Therefore, teachers should reconsider how they encourage their students to think, in order to make thinking enjoyable enough for students to go after.

F. If we are all so bad at thinking, how does anyone get through the day?

G. They want to help their students feel the same excitement and passion for learning that they felt.

England's highest main-line railway station is in serious trouble, deserted and unmanned since it was officially closed in 1970, Dent, located high in the hills of Yorkshire, wakes up on six summer weekends each year, when a special train unloads walkers, sightseers and people who simply want to catch a train from the highest station to its platforms.

But even this limited being may soon be brought to an end. Dent station located on the Settel to Carlisle railway line, is said to be surrounded by the most beautiful scenery in the country. But no amount of scenic beauty can save the line because of the British Rail's money problems.

It is now an open secret that British Rail sees no future for this railway line. Most of its trains disappeared some time ago. Bridges, built a century ago, are falling down. It is not alone. Half a dozen railway routes in the North of England are facing a similar threat. The problem is an old system and an almost total lack of cash to repair it. Bridges and tunnels are showing their ages, the wooden supports for the tracks are rotting(腐烂) and engines and coaches(车厢) are getting old.

On main lines between large cities, the problem is not too bad. There lines still make a profit and cash can be found to keep them in good condition. But on the country branch line, the situation is different. As track wears out, it is not replaced. Instead speed limits are introduced, making the journey longer than necessary and discouraging travelers.

If a bridge is dangerous, there is often only one thing for British Rail to do: go out and find money from another places. This is exactly what it did a few months ago when a bridge at Bridling station was threatening to fall down. Repairs were calculated at 200,000 pounds just for one bridge, so British Rail was pleased, and rather surprised when two local councils(理事会) offered half that amount of money.

1.Of all the railway routes in Britain, the one which passes through Dent

A. is the most historic.

B. passes through the most attractive countryside.

C. is the most expensive route for tourists.

D. carries the greatest number of tourists.

2.What is the most urgent( 迫切的)problem for many country railway lines ?

A. Rebuilding bridges.

B. Repairing engines.

C. Renewing coaches.

D. Replacing stations.

3.Who would appear to be the people most affected by the difficulties facing the British Rail?

A. The people who do much business.

B. The groups who are organized .

C. Large city people and local people.

D. The people who want to have holidays for touring.

4.How should British Rail improve the financial situation of the country railway lines?

A. By bringing in speed limits

B. By decreasing preserving costs.

C. By increasing train fares

D. By asking local councils for help

When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually news. Rather, it is an ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them. However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed. Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds and, most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals.

Early artists drawing these animals achieved a monumental and difficult task. They did not limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that required climbing steep walls or going on hands and knees into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex.

Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside.

Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are hardly recognizable. To prevent further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years after it was discovered.

B. The caves were full of wild animals.

C. Painting materials were hard to find.

Bill performed much better when he was having fun with Joe in the schoolyard than he did when he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd. The next day Joe and Bill met in the schoolyard again to practice. After a few minutes, Joe excused himself. " Practice without me, "Joe said to his friend. "I'll be back in a minute. "

When Joe explained why he needed them, everyone was happy to help. Joe reminded(提醒)the group to stay quiet as they all went toward the school's basketball court. As Joe had hoped, Bill was still practicing basketball. He made five baskets in a row without noticing the silent people standing behind him.

Many moved stories remain deep in people’s heart to this day. In 2008 a terrible earthquake strike Wenchuan, there many people lost their lives and homes. After the earthquake under a fallen building, a mother as well as her baby were found by some soldiers. When the soldiers were ready to take them away, they surprised to find the baby in the mother’s arms still alive. The baby was sleeping but wasn’t hurt at all. Between the dead mother and the living baby, there was a cell phone with a short message on the screen. It read, “Don’t worry, my baby. Mom is for you. If you can survive, don’t forget that I love you.”

The story moved many people deep, including me. I couldn’t hold back my tears when I read these word. One is great if he loves others when he is in the danger.
