Consider these five words: island, honour, sign, tongue, climb. At first glance, you probably don't think they have anything in common. Then, you might find some of them contain the most common letter in the English language. And you might need to go back to your grade-school grammar lessons to see the connection. If you're still confused, say each word slowly. Did you notice a missing syllable (音节) or two? Actually, all five words have one or more silent letters—and that's just a small sample of them.

It's no secret that the English language has lots of crazy grammar rules, and the way we pronounce words is no exception While there are 26 letters in the alphabet, they share at least 44 different pronunciations among them. The letter A, for example, has seven different English pronunciations alone. At least you can safely ignore these common grammar rules.

On top of that, almost every letter in the alphabet has a silent usage, too. Think about it: From the C in scissors to the U in build, the English language has a bad habit of dropping letters in certain words. Even unusual letters like Z and J are silent in words that we have adopted from foreign languages, such as marijuana (originally a Spanish word) and laissez-faire (French).

But as Merriam-Webster Dictionary points out, one unusual letter is never silent: the  letter V. While it makes an appearance in words like quiver and vivid, you can be sure it always behaves the exact same way. That might change soon, though. Last year, President Donald Trump tweeted the word “covfefe”, which caused heated debate about how, exactly, one should say this made-up term. Some suggested that it is pronounced with a silent V.

1.What do the underlined words in Paragraph have in common?

A.They contain the exactly same letters.

B.They have one or more silent letters.

A.To show that it has many pronunciations.

B.To tell that English has many grammar rules.

C.To explain that words have similar pronunciations.

D.To prove English letters have various pronunciations.

3.Which letter is seldom silent in the English language?

A.The letter A. B.The letter J.

C.The letter V. D.The letter Z.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.English pronunciations. B.English dictionaries.

Hard work really does pay off. Scientists find that perseverance (坚持不懈) leads to  better grades and higher achievements in school.

“Being passionate (热情的) is not enough to ensure academic success,” says researchers, who thought of “courage” as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching long-term goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.

Researchers think that the finding could help create new training to help children develop the skill and help ensure their future success.

Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki. They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16, the sixth grade until the ninth grade in local school years. Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage was related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.

Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro, who led the study, said, “Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily. A key element of courage is high perseverance when facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well-being. Our study shows the power of courage.”

Professor Salmela-Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added, “Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves. Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with setbacks. One must not be discouraged by setbacks, but draw strength and new energy from them!

1.What can we learn about the research?

A.It takes at least three years. B.It helps students make progress.

C.It makes many discoveries. D.It follows 2,000 students abroad.

2.What should students do according to the researchers?

A.Focus on former grades. B.Achieve their goals.

Alice is not afraid to be the center of attention—she enjoys performing traditional Chinese dances on stage. But the 16-year-old high school student in Texas, US, felt  alienated (被疏远的) earlier this year when she walked into her first computer science lecture. There were only 11 girls out of 100 students. It was familiar feeling for Alice. When she was in ninth grade, she was one of only seven girls out of 40 competitors who were competing at a state science fair.

After that, Alice decided to do her part to close the gender gap (性别差异) in STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math. She formed a club called Girls in STEM. It focuses on teaching and encouraging girls who are interested in STEM. And only girls can join it.

Alice wants girls to know that STEM can be fun. The club isn't just about sitting in a lab and doing homework. There are interesting activities that can spark girls' interest in STEM. Girls can also share learning experiences with each other. The club started with seven girls at her school. Over the years, the club has spread to other schools. It now has 45 members.

According to recent surveys, women work in fewer than 30 percent of STEM jobs in the United States. Alice's goal is to bring Girls in STEM to 10 schools in total and turn it into a non-profit in the coming years, hoping it will help more young women follow their dreams in this field.

It was raining light when I got up yesterday. After quick breakfast, I took an umbrella with me and went to school in a hurry. It was fifteen minutes after school began. I was running quickly while I saw an old man walking slowly in the rain. I stopped, wondered whether to help him or not, as I might be late to school. Then I made a decision to walk with him home. About ten minutes late, we arrived at his house. He thanked me again and again. I smiled and said it was nothing. I was late when I got to school. Hearing his story, the head teacher, that was giving his lecture, praised me before all the students.

Are you looking for a new pastime that will create a balance between physical activity and relaxation? Then yoga may be the perfect choice for you.1.It can also be done anywhere at any time. It's a great way to strengthen your muscles and become more flexible.

In the 1930s, Indian Sri Tirumali and K. Pattabhi developed one of the most popular forms of yoga practised worldwide today. They worked together using an ancient Sansknt text called Yoga Korunta to create a set routine of yoga movements and breathing exercises.2.

Microsoft PowerPoint is the world’s most common presentation tool. It emerged from software company Forethought Inc in the 1980s. Bob Gaskins was the man behind it.

“I knew in the early 80s that there were as many as a billion, a thousand million presentation slides being made per year just in America,” Gaskins says,“ but they were all made by hand and almost nobody was using computers to do them.

“It was clear to me that here was a huge application worth billions and billions of dollars a year that could be done on computers as soon as there was a revolution in the kinds of computers that we had.”

Gaskins was onto something, but it was a hard sell at the time. The software wouldn’t run on any existing personal computers. Anyone wanting to use it had to buy a new machine. Even so, people bought personal computers for the first time in order to be able to use PowerPoint, says Wired magazine journalist Russell Davies.

Davies explains that before PowerPoint, people used slides to convey information to groups --- but anyone creating a presentation had to send away to get their materials made. It took a long time to do, was difficult to make changes and because it was so expensive, only the most senior people in an organisation got to do it.

PowerPoint,” Davies says,“made it possible for everyone in an organisation to stand up and say their piece.

PowerPoint has helped turn us all into presenters --- but it’ s also been accused of over-simplifying ideas and distracting (干扰)us from clear thinking.

Sarah Kaplan is a management professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. She has noticed that, rather than people asking for new analysis or insights in meetings, they were asking for more PowerPoint slides.

Kaplan says that some CEOS, such as Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, have banned its use. “He felt, and I think many people feel, that PowerPoint became such an object of the process that they lost the ideas inside of it and that is the risk.”

1.What drove Bob Gaskins to develop PowerPoint?

A.His personal needs at the office.

B.The support from Forethought Inc.

C.The great potential market demand.

D.His interest in science and technology.

2.What was the problem with Bob Gaskin’s PowerPoint in the 1980s?

A.It was very expensive.

B.It was very difficult to use.

C.It couldn’t t be used on old computers.

D.It couldn’t satisfy young people’s needs.

3.What might be Russell Davies’s attitude to PowerPoint?

A.Critical. B.Appreciative. C.Cautious. D.Contradictory.

4.Why does Jeff Bezos ban the use of PowerPoint?

A.It fails to solve practical problems.

B.It fails to convey messages effectively.

C.It makes something valuable unavailable.

D.It results in creative thinking getting ignored.

Positive thinking is a significant element of happiness.  In order to become a positive thinker, determination and consistency are important. The first thing to know about positive thinking is that everyone can do it.  With certain cognitive (认知的) and behavioral changes, we can all become positive thinkers.  Another important factor is that being a positive thinker does not mean you become numb to anything that is not working properly in your life or is negative - it just means that you approach life and face challenges with a healthier outlook.

Instead of selectively attending to negative events, focus on the positive ones. Then pay attention to the delayed consequences of your behavior rather than the immediate ones. For example, if a job is not going like you want, focus on the fact that you have a job and how you can take your time to make the situation better.

Challenge any internal attributions and see if you compare your behavior to standards that are excessively rigid and perfectionistic. If so, change these and be reasonable with your comparisons. For example, if you constantly compare your weaknesses with other people's strengths, then switch this and compare yourself with those who are doing poorer than you as well. Overall, people who focus more on their strengths than their weaknesses but at the same time are aware of their weaknesses have a healthier self-evaluation result.

When faced with too much fear about a situation, imagine the worst case and visualize a solution for it, then let go of fear.  This way, you will be prepared for anything and your fear will not block you from being open and creative to different solutions. For example, if you are constantly worried about losing your job up to a point where it is creating a lot of anxiety and fear and is effecting your performance and your happiness negatively, then think of losing your job, visualize how you will handle it, find solutions in your mind and then let go of the thought and the fear attached to it.

So positive thinkers are better problem solvers and have better interactions. In addition to that, people who are positive thinkers are happier and more satisfied with their life.

1.Why is positive thinking a significant element of happiness?

A. It means that one is blind to the troubles and difficulties that exist.

B. It means that one constantly compares everything with other people's.

C. It means that one is strong in mind and has nothing to be afraid of.

D. It means that one approaches life and faces challenges more healthily.

2.What does the text suggest about the job you don't like?

A. Quitting it and finding a better one.

B. Keeping and trying to make it better.

C. Being negative and numb to it.

D. Challenging yourself with a new outlook.

3.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 4?

A. Be prepared for the worst: and let go of fear.

B. Being constantly worried will lose your job.

C. Fear will prevent you being open and creative.

D. There is nothing to fear if well prepared.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. How to focus on the positive events

B. How to be a positive thinker

C. What to do when faced with fear

D. What to know of self-evaluation

I walked up to the counter. Behind it was a lady with glasses on the tip of her nose and gray hair on her head.

"Excuse me," I said. She looked up. "You're that Clements kid," she said."I'm Miss Bee.Come closer and let me get a look at you." She pushed her glasses up her nose. "I can describe you to the police if something goes missing from the store."

"I'm not a thief!" I was shocked. I was seven, too young to be a thief!

"From what I can see, you're not much of anything. But I can tell you've got potential." She went back to reading her newspaper.

"I need to get these." I said, holding up my list. "So? Go get them."Miss Bee pointed to a sign on the screen door. "I'm not your servant,so I suggest you get yourself a basket and start filling."

I visited Miss Bee several times a week that summer. Sometimes she short-changed me. Other times she overcharged. "That can of beans is only twenty nine cents" I corrected her one afternoon. I had watched the numbers change on the cash register closely, and Miss Bee had added 35 cents. She didn't seem embarrassed. She just looked at me over her glasses and fixed the price.

But she ever let me declare victory. All summer long she found ways to play tricks on me. No sooner had I learned how to pronounce bicarbonate of soda(小苏打)and memorized its location on the shelf than Miss Bee rearranged the shelve and made me hunt for it all over again.

One day before I left, she said, "I know what you think of me, but I don't care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason.I believe my job is to teach every child I meet life lessons. When you get older you'll be glad our paths crossed!" Glad I met Miss Bee? Ha! The idea was absurd...

Until one day my daughter asked me to finish her math problems. "If I do it for you, how will you ever learn to do it yourself?" I said. Suddenly, I remembered the lady Miss Bee.

A.knew her job was to help every child she met

B.asked the girl to shop by herself to test her honesty

C.taught the girl many lessons but she didn't understand

D.rearranged the shelves to teach the girl to be changeable

4.Which is NOT the lesson the writer learnt from shopping?

I like travelling and my dream of visit Beijing, the capital city of our country, come true during the National Day holiday this year. In October 1st, I went to Tian'anmen Square with my parents, there we watched the flag-raising ceremony. As I watched flag rising slowly, I sang the national anthem, feel extremely excited. Then we went to some other famous tourist attraction, like the Great Wall. Standing on the Great Wall, I felt very proudly. I thought of the old saying that "One who fail to reach the Great Wall is not a hero." Although I was tired, I really had a fun.

Four Habits to Help You Succeed

Nobody would like to experience failure. We all want to succeed. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. 1.

• Know your values.

Finding your values is in line with creating motivation.2.Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.

3.

Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here. 4.If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take far too long.

• Set a time for success.

Set a date for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal.5.By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.

• Don’t give up because of failure.

Failure can’t be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap! Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and go on.

A. Make the right decision.

B. Pick a goal and focus on it .

C. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.

D. Keep it realistic, while not giving yourself too much time.

E. I have made a list of four habits to help you set goals and realize them.

F. Sit and reflect on what you value most.

G. Push yourself to be courageous, and take that next step.

Vinegar is great. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists, it may even help the planet’s population survive climate change.

Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan have found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower.

The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar.

After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants, and they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive.

Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, tells Popular Science magazine that he’s already been in touch with people all over the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from flower growing companies to amateur gardeners. Although at this point keeping thirsty plants alive isn’t as easy as just pouring vinegar over them, Kim says he and his team are working on making the process as simple as possible. “Now we are trying to cooperate with some farmers, and also some companies, to make a method to apply this system,” he says.

And for those of us who always forget to ask our neighbors to water our plants when we go away, hopefully this means the end of returning home from a trip to find our favorite flowers have died.

1.What is mentioned as a feature of the Arabidopsis?

A. It produces acetate in wet conditions. B. It is mainly composed of acetate.

C. It can survive in nowhere but desert. D. It can be tolerant of drought.

2.The scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants to _______.

A. find a simple way of keeping the crops of farmers alive

B. add acetate to the soil of other plants to stop watering

C. check the effectiveness of the acetate to resist drought

D. treat the dried-up plants by adding acetate to them

3.What is the author’s attitude to the discovery?

A. Objective. B. Unsupportive.

C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.

4.What does the text mainly tell the readers?

A. Vinegar May End Hunger B. Vinegar Keeps Plants Living Forever

C. How to Survive Climate Change D. Plants Need Water

A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself I volunteered, got involved in various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new chapter(篇章)of my life. I had totally packed two weeks before it was time to leave.

Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn't like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was so homesick and I didn't know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a ton of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn't think how lonely I felt.

Soon after, I began to limit foodand then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced that controlling this number was the solution for my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies. I quickly started recovery in my mind.

How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight A's. That's why I want to share my storyto help other students feel less lonely.

From American Express, wedding guests will, on average, spend673 on each wedding they attend this year. It includes airfare (225), hotel (170), dining out (116)and dressing up (95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank

1. Book flights in advance

The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. You can check Google Flights for a calendar of prices showing the cheapest days to fly from apps like Hopper to get rea-time alerts when a fare is at its lowest price point

2. Don't blow your budget on the gift

If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money

3. Use old dresses and suits

You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding. While men have the option of repeating their suits, women are more likely to spend money on new clothes for the special occasion. But before you take out your wallet, consider reinventing something already in your closet. Belts, colorful scarves, shoes can bring life to any outfit.

B.To give some tips on saving money to attend a wedding.

C.To introduce general expenses of attending a wedding.

D.To state some aspects to be considered while holding weddings.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighbourhood, I couldn’t imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” His blue eyes were hopeful.

“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.

“Yes,” His voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?”

My heart softened, and I wondered if he is badly in need of the bit of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I’ll get my money.”

The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea?" Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several bruised (擦伤的)apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie. ”

The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. “What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”

The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years before, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.
