You may be relying more and more on your refrigerator. But you should know there are some things you’d better not put into your refrigerator.

1. Nothing dries out bread faster than your refrigerator. If you make sandwiches with the bread, and then place them in the refrigerator, the cold temperature will make the bread hard like nuts. Besides, the coldness makes the bread become hard at a faster speed.

♦Coffee. Since ground coffee like coffee beans require cool, dry and dark spots to keep their taste and freshness, the refrigerator is not a good place for them. Coffee also needs an airtight(密封的)container. But if you have much coffee that you won’t use right away, then you can freeze it. 2. This way, you can store it for up to a month.

♦Tomatoes. 3. But putting them in the refrigerator will cause them to lose all of their good taste. Plus, the cold air in the cooler refrigerator stops the ripening(成熟的)process as well. And as we all know, ripening is what gives every tomato more taste. For best results, keep tomatoes out, and inside a basket or a bowl on your counter.

♦Honey. Make sure that you keep honey in an airtight container. 4. Therefore. storing it in your cooler refrigerator doesn’t make sense. Honey is a naturally preserved food so it needs no help from us. Amazingly enough, placing honey in your refrigerator will in fact speed up the sugar crystallization (结晶)process. 5.

A. Nuts.

B. Bread.

C. We all love tomatoes for their taste.

D. Just make sure to put the coffee in airtight bags.

E. Honey will stay good almost forever in that way.

F. Some of you dislike the tomatoes’ taste because it is a little strange.

G. As a result, the honey will become harder or nearly impossible to eat.

It’s normal for teens to want to stay connected with friends and social circle, but what about that happening in the middle of the night? The Journal of Youth Studies recently published new research showing that one in five teens from 12 to 15 regularly wake to spend all night on social media (社会媒体). Not surprisingly, the research also showed that these social night owls were three times more likely than others to feel tired at school and that girls were more likely than boys to be called to office.

The blue light produced by cell phones and computers makes the brain to stay awake, so it's easy to see why a teen might be up all night. A study in Psychological Science showed the same brain reaction: when teens saw large numbers of “likes” on their posts, they stayed awake with excitement as if they had eaten chocolates or won money. Besides not catching up on sleep and interrupting their sleep cycle, teens may never fully enter deep sleep that may be responsible for brain development and learning.

Considering about 72 percent of children from 6 to 17 sleep with some electronic media in their bedrooms, parents need to set rules sooner rather than later.

“Providing access (使用机会) to social media is a favor that children can earn and also lose,” Janie Feldman, an expert who treats sleep disorders (紊乱), reminds parents, “The bad effect is clear. So teens and parents should discuss and agree on its use, timing and access. When teenagers agree to the rules, it’s easier for parents to control how much time they use the phones or computers.”

1.What does the underlined part “night owls” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Girls often called to office.

B.Teens who stay up late on social media.

C.Teens who are busy with their homework at night.

D.Boys regularly waking in the middle of the night.

2.How do teens react when seeing many “likes” on their posts according to the study?

A.They are too excited to go to sleep.

B.They fall asleep easily and happily.

C.They are too excited to go to school.

D.They decide to make more good friends.

3.What suggestion does Janie Feldman give to parents?

A.Making rules about media access together with their children.

B.Getting their children to do homework through computers.

C.Encouraging their children to stay connected with online friends.

D.Stopping their children from using cell phones.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Deep sleep makes a big difference to brain development.

B.Kids are trying to win back the trust of their parents.

C.Social media may have a bad effect on all kinds of people.

D.Social media may cause teens’ sleep disorders.

Scientists say only enlarging the world’s nature reserve to help protect plants and animals may be useless. The main reason is that levels of human activity are rising in and around the nature reserves. In fact, recognizing spaces as protected areas is not reducing human activity there.

The researchers found that a lack of money to pay for land conservation(保护)is affecting conservation efforts. And it is a lack of communication between people who live in protected natural areas and outsiders. About 17 percent of the world is within protected areas, including the national parks, nature reserves and wilderness areas. Protected areas are important for supporting environments with many different kinds of plants and animals.

The researchers again found increasing human activity in most protected areas in every country. However, they said that human activity appeared to be more of a problem in nations with fewer roads and lower life standards on the Human Development Index(指数). The index uses information about life length, education and earnings to grade countries on human development.

Across the northern Australia, protected areas often proved effective at slowing human activity when compared with unprotected areas. But in South America, Southeast Asia and African countries, pressure from human activity inside protected areas was higher.

Experts say governments need to provide fund support to help protected areas. Simply recognizing a place as a protected area can’t be the beginning and the end of a conservation effort. Working with local people to take efforts is also important. If they’re not partners in the protected areas, then wildlife conservation is much more difficult.

1.What are protected areas mainly affected by according to the text?

A.Human activity. B.Climate change.

C.Population growth. D.Environmental pollution.

2.What’s the Human Development Index used to do?

A.Record more roads in the world.

B.Improve education in all countries.

C.Grade countries on human development.

D.Lead more people to make more money.

3.What can be the best title for the text?

A.People May Cause Harm to Plants and Animals

B.Nature Reserves May Not Protect Wildlife Safely

C.Nature Reserves in the World Should Be Increased

D.Local People Should Focus on the Natural Environment

For the first time since my open-heart operation, I have the energy to take my harp(竖琴)to the hospital rooms and play for anyone who likes it.

I checked in with two nurses and they gave me a list of rooms. The first man I played for was a patient who found it difficult to sleep. He smiled and with his eyes closed, he reached out to my harp. He was not interested in my voice, but he appreciated the harp. In the next room was a woman patient. I played some soft music for her and then she slept soundly.

Then I found a lovely elderly woman who was awake. There were flowers everywhere and photos of her and her husband at her bedside. She held my hand and talked for some time and was pleased to receive harp music. Playing for her was a special pleasure. She asked me how long I had been playing the harp, how much the harp weighed, how I learned it and why I wanted to learn it and so on.

We talked about books for a bit as well. I played until her grandson came in and he came back from overseas to see her. This woman was deeply loved—you could see that. She was beautiful and kind. I learn so much from these beautiful people who are brave to face their illnesses. It is always such a great honor to play for them.

1.How did the author feel when playing for the elderly woman?

A.Sad. B.Worried.

C.Amazed. D.Pleased.

A.She had no relatives. B.She had many hobbies.

C.She would recover soon. D.She was loved by her family.

3.How many patients did the author play the harp for according to the text?

A.Two. B.Three.

C.Four. D.Five.

When the young horse Daisy May came to us, she was pregnant (怀孕的). With no related experience, I was unprepared for what might come next.

After some difficulty, Daisy’s baby was born. I heard a gurgling noise. I couldn’t believe that baby was breathing and blinking his big brown eyes at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was. I prepared to bottle-feed him, but Samson quickly found his natural food source. Thank God! This new mother was going to stay with her baby.

Samson has grown up surrounded with loving companions. I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day when he was nine months old to wean (使……断奶) him, but otherwise he goes wherever she does. I think she would be lost without him. His horse stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoy playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.

I asked a worker to make a harness (马具) for my three little horses. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.

The most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little famous for his talents. Last winter, I wondered how Samson would feel about dragging a plastic sled behind him with me sitting on it. No problem at all- we moved smoothly across the snow.

People came from all over to see him perform.

Learning English as a second language can be a challenge, but it can also bring a lot of advantages. 1. The international business community often uses it for communication, even among people who do not speak the same native language. There are also many professional publications printed in English, which means it is often an important language for anyone working in science or research.

2. People who speak two or more languages can easily get jobs in travel, international business, or translation. Even outside of a professional environment, people often like to be able to talk to individuals from around the world. They can communicate and talk with others more easily.

Knowing English can broaden the types of people you can speak to. Many people find great social and cultural benefits in having pen friends from other countries. 3.A large number of websites are available primarily in English. Anyone who does not understand the language may have difficulty using them. Besides, for anyone interested in traveling to countries in which English is the common language, it is often essential to understand and speak it. Throughout the UK, US, and Canada, traveling and shopping are often made easier by speaking English. 4.

Learning a language can also be a great way to meet people, even if you never plan on leaving home. A class at a local community center or college can introduce you to a wide variety of people. Language courses often encourage students to carry on conversations with each other in the language being learned. 5.

A. It’s hard to get a job without speaking English.

B. This can be a great way to break the ice with new people.

C. And the Internet makes such communication fast and easy.

D. For many people, learning English can broaden their employment opportunities.

E. Reading novels, watching movies and listening to music in English can also be helpful.

F. One of the primary benefits is that it is often considered the language of global business.

G. It is much easier for you to explore these regions and more easily communicate with the locals.

One of Australia’s most famous natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains a large variety of life and over 3000 reef systems and hundreds of islands with some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the world’s most sought after tourist attractions.

However, for the past few years, the news about corals has been discouraging. Currently, the reef is threatened by climate change, tourism, water pollution, and overfishing. Agricultural fertilizer(肥料) runoff from Australian farms also has caused the widespread growth of sea-plants, which absorb most of the nutrients(养分) and leave little remaining for the living coral reef and the animals that live in it. “What has changed is the increasing importance of climate change as a greater threat than the others,” says David Wachenfeld, a scientist of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Coral reefs are extremely sensitive(敏感的) to warming ocean temperatures.

In a report on April 28, the Australian government said it set aside $500 million to help protect corals. The money will be spent on reducing water pollution from agriculture, fighting coral-killing starfish, reef monitoring, and research on climate influence.

Though the Australian investment is welcome, it will at best only delay coral deaths. It’s too little, too late, as a leading coral-scientist Terry Hughes of James Cook University put it. The only way to save corals over the long term is to slow down climate change. That process will require all countries to work together to find the most effective way of cutting emissions (排放) of greenhouse gases.

The most recent emissions figures, however, show that the world is failing at that task. The year 2018 has seen an increase in global emissions. This week in Bonn, Germany, countries are meeting to discuss how to keep their word in the Paris climate agreement. Let’s hope they hear about the silent death of the world’s corals.

1.Why does the author write the text?

A.To introduce the Great Barrier Reef.

B.To show the result of climate change.

C.To offer ways of protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

D.To tell us the serious situation of the Great Barrier Reef.

2.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A.Sea-plants help to protect the coral reefs.

B.Water temperature has little to do with the coral reefs.

C.Climate change is the main reason for coral reefs’ death.

D.Agricultural fertilizer provides nutrients for coral reefs.

3.According to Terry Hughes, the Australian investment in protecting the coral reefs was _______.

A.timely B.unsatisfying

C.effective D.useless

4.How can we protect the Great Barrier Reef effectively in the long run?

A.By reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases.

B.By cutting down the number of tourists.

C.By setting more strict rules on overfishing.

D.By investing more in climate research.

I’m Andrew Siegel and this is my garden. This is where my family and I grow a lot of different vegetables, flowers and herbs. Gardening has been really important to my family because it gives us an opportunity to spend time outside together, away from all the electronics.

Especially for my five-year-old, it really gives her an opportunity to be in touch with nature-all the little animals, insects and things that come out here.

We find that a lot of the things that we plan for in the garden don’t always go the way that we’d like them to, and some of the things that we don’t plan for become what we enjoy the most that year. So it’s something that my family and I have learned: To appreciate(欣赏) all of it.

My advice for beginner gardeners is to just start. Get a pot, get a little bit of dirt, get a tomato plant or whatever plant you want and just get started.

I think sometimes it seems a little challenging. Trust me, it does not need to be perfect. You will enjoy every little thing you get out of it.

Gardening has taught me patience, something I don’t naturally have a lot of. It takes weeks, takes months before the work you put into it comes out. You learn not only to be patient, in that end product, but you’ve also learned that, after years of gardening, the end product is just part of it.

The journey of growing has become much more important to me than the actual produce that we get in the end. Nothing has been so valuable as the time I spend out here. I’m by no means in a farmland, but I do have my own little piece of what I consider heaven, and I’ve really learned to appreciate every little moment-every insect, every plant, every flower-and when you can appreciate it in that way, there’s nothing better.

1.What does the underlined word “five-year-old” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The author. B.The author’s daughter.

C.The insect. D.The little animal.

2.What is the most important for Andrew Siegel in gardening?

A.Planting different vegetables and flowers.

B.Staying at home together with her family.

C.Enjoying the whole process of growing.

D.Harvesting what the family planted.

3.Which of the following can be the best title?

A.The Joys of Gardening B.The Benefits of Gardening

C.Being in Touch with Nature D.Being Patient with Life

People may have some unclear memories of their childhood but almost everyone will remember the beautiful princess and the cruel queen in "Snow White" the innocent little girl and the greedy big gray wolf in "Little Red Riding Hood"1. For example "True love can overcome anything" and "Even a frog can turn into a prince" However at a certain age we start to learn new things about life particularly that love doesn't always win and that a frog is just a frog

2. Just look at animated films like "The Lion King" and "Frozen" which have millions of fans young and old And this year's Lucerne Festival in Switzerland - a classical music festival - will also feature the themes of "Childhood" and "Fairy tales"

"Fairy tales endure because they are the stories of our lives in their most stripped down form" wrote US author Laura Packer "They are stories of love and loss desire and death riches and ruin" 3. But if children only see just one side of reality adults usually see the other For example in the movie "Maleficent" we′re told the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the evil queen 4. Instead she suffers great losses growing up leading to the creation of her "evil'' side And in US author James Finn Gamer's book "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories "he tells the classic story of "Little Red Riding Hood" but with a modem touch

5. They may usually start with "Once upon a time but as we grow older we learn that every story doesn't always need a "happily ever after" to be a good one

AFairy tales are all about reality

BBut somehow our love for fairy tales never dies

CMost of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales

DThe theme of fairy tales is to teach people courage and kindness

EFairy tales have been adapted into versions suitable for children

FIt looks like fairy tales aren't just stories our parents read us at bedtime

GUnlike the children's version of the story we see that the queen wasn't born evil

Victor Frankl the author of Mans Search far Meaning once wrote "'Everything can be taken from a person but one thing the last of human freedoms-to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances" Frankl was right Attitude is a choice You could be faced with a thousand problems many or most over which you have absolutely no control However there is always one thing you are in complete and absolute control of and that is your own attitude

To be honest it wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I finally understood its full impact All through my teens and into my early adult life I can't tell you the number of times that I heard "Bob if you'd just change your attitude you would do a lot better" At that time I didn't know what attitude was let alone know how to change it!

Attitude and results are inseparable They follow one another as night follows day One is the cause while the other the result There is a term we use to distinguish this "cause and effect " relationship which is called The Law of Cause and Effect Simply stated if you think in negative terms you will get negative results if you think in positive terms you will achieve positive results Some people always see wrong things in the world These individuals are quick to blame circumstances or other people for their problems rather than accepting responsibility for their life and their attitude Thus it would appear as if they were born with bad luck and it has followed them around their whole life However there are others who are forever winning and living the good life They are the real movers and shakers who make things happen They seem to go from one major accomplishment to another They're in control of their life Their wins are a matter of choice

You can experience that kind of life as well you only need to decide Dorothea Brand once said "Act as if it were impossible to fail " and I challenge you to do so By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day you will change your entire outlook You have the power to choose an abundant life no matter what your circumstances are Don't wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you are meant to lead

A walk through the galleries of Quebec's Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) places individuals face-to-face with some 43,000 artworks ranging from Chinese ceramics (陶瓷制品) to Inuit sculpture.

While the visiting is an incredible cultural experience, a group of local physicians will soon be able to prescribe(开处方) museum visits as treatment for some illnesses.

"We know that art contributes to neural(神经的) activity," said MMFA director Nathalie Bondil. "What we see is that being in contact with art can really help your well-being."

Hélène Boyer, vice president of a Montreal-based medical association, explains that museum visits have been shown to increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter (神经传导物质) known as the "happy chemical" which helps to lift mood.

According to Boyer, the small increase in hormones(荷尔蒙)associated with enjoying an afternoon of art is similar to that offered by exercise, making museum prescriptions ideal for the elderly experiencing pain that prevents them from regularly joining in physical activity.

The museum visits are designed to improve traditional methods. As Bondil notes, spending time in a peaceful environment can provide a welcome distraction. "What is most important is this experience can help them escape from their own pain," she says. "When you enter the museum, you escape from the speed of our daily life."

"I am convinced that in the 21st century, culture will be what physical activity was for health in the 20th century," said Bondil. "Some people would do well to recall that just in the 19th century, sports were believed to do harm to the body. Just as doctors now prescribe exercise, they will be able to prescribe a visit to the MMFA."

1.What does Hélène Boyer think of museum visits?

A.They can cheer people up.

B.They can reduce physical activity.

C.They can slow down our life pace.

D.They can increase levels of art appreciation.

2.How do museum visits affect people?

A.Stop them concentrating on pain.

B.Stop them focusing on traditional methods.

C.Encourage them not to be absent-minded.

D.Encourage them to slow their steps while walking.

3.What does the last paragraph suggest?

A.Physical activities were popular in the 19th century.

B.Sports are considered to be harmful to the body.

C.Ideas of treating illnesses are changing over time.

D.Doctors prescribe museum visits regularly now.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Museum visits are ideal for the elderly.

B.Happy chemical helps to lift mood.

C.Peaceful environment helps escape pain.

D.Cultural activities will promote health.

Unbelievable Stories of Animals Acting Just Like Humans

Horses are picky eaters

Horses have an even better sense of smell than humans do. When horses raise their noses and open their nostrils (鼻孔) , their nervous system allows them to sense smells we can’t sense. This might explain why they refuse dirty water and carefully move around meadows, eating only the tastiest grasses, experts say.

Whale says thanks

In 2011, a whale expert spotted a humpback whale trapped in a fishing net and spent an hour freeing it. Afterward, in an hour-long display of thanks, the whale swam near their boat and leaped into the air about 40 times.

Pandas like to be naughty

Pandas are shy by nature for its shy behaviors such as covering its face with a paw of ducking its head when confronted by a stranger.

A cat honors its owner

Paper towels, and a plastic cup are just a few of the gifts that Toldo, a devoted three-year-old gray-and-white cat, has placed on his former owner Iozzelli Renzo’s grave every day since the man died in September 2011. Renzo adopted Toldo from a shelter when the cat was three months old, and the two formed an inseparable bond.     Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. 1. As a result, some people may notice that it takes longer to learn new things; they don’t remember information as well as they did, or they lose things like their glasses, cellphones or other small items. These are usually signs of mild forgetfulness, not serious memory problems.

2. For example, medication side effects, vitamin B12 shortage, alcoholism, tumors(肿瘤) or infections in the brain can cause memory loss. A doctor should treat serious medical conditions like these as soon as possible.

Emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety or depression, can make a person more forgetful. For instance, someone who has recently retired or who is coping with the death of a relative or a friend may feel sad, lonely or worried. 3.

The confusion and forgetfulness caused by emotions are usually temporary and go away when the feelings fade. The emotional problems can be eased by supportive friends and family. 4. Treatment may include counseling, medication or both.

If you’re concerned that you or someone you know has a serious memory problem, talk with your doctor. 5. Health care professionals can recommend ways to manage the problem or make suggestions on treatment or services that might help you out.

F. As people get older, changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain.

G. Trying to deal with these life changes leaves some people confused or forgetful.

There are two main types of office layouts used by most companies around the world: Landscape Office and Enclosed Office. A landscape office lacks privacy, however, this office layout is more beneficial than an enclosed office for employees to improve work efficiency and productivity.

Some people might desire an undisturbed workplace. According to the survey collected from a company with the two kinds of office layouts, most of managers prefer a workplace where they can concentrate on their work and make a clear thinking. However, managers that possess their own enclosed offices might have the feeling of being distant from their clerks, which leads to high pressure. Meanwhile, employees tend to be nervous when they have conversations with their managers in an obviously hierarchical(等级制的) environment. In contrast, a landscape office makes it easier and more pleasant for employees to communicate with their managers or their colleagues; this would result in speeding up work efficiency and productivity.

Besides, greater interaction is beneficial for employees to build up friendship in a landscape office. This can be proved by the experiment of Brookes and Kaplan. They recorded the attitudes and opinions of 120 employees toward their enclosed office before they moved to the landscape office, and then after nine months they were tested again. The researchers discovered that those employees performed positive changes in group sociability. When people have better group sociability, they experience a better team work and efficient cooperation, which surely promotes work productivity.

Some opponents claim that a landscape office would lead to the decline of the value of work satisfaction and motivation from employees. However, the result from other researchers remained controversial; in their opinion there are several factors which affect job satisfaction and motivation. 600 Canadian federal government department workers who were housed at a modern landscape office and were surveyed gave both negative and positive feedback. They admitted that they felt the sense of belonging to a team or a working community, which mainly contributes to job satisfaction. Motivation is also increased by a sense of responsibility for and loyalty to a team.

Admittedly, there are some advantages that only enclosed offices possess. However, a landscape office can combine the features of the traditional enclosed office, for example, designing the independent meeting room to decrease noise from discussion. Although the benefits of a landscape office outweigh those of an enclosed office, which layout is better should be decided by the characteristics of the people and the type of work they do.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards office layouts?

A.Objective. B.Casual. C.Optimistic. D.Sceptical.

A new study has shown how computers and robots powered by artificial intelligence can read human eye movements to “read” human personalities.

The eyes, they say, are the windows to the soul. And if that is true, computers and robots powered by sophisticated(复杂的) artificial intelligence algorithms(算法) may soon have the ability to peer into your soul. That is the result of a new study on the connection between eye movements and personality, conducted by neuroscience researchers based at the University of South Australia and Published in the scientific Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience.

“Eye movements during an everyday task predict aspects of our personality,” wrote the researchers, led by University of South Australia neuroscientist Tobias Loetscher, whose team follows 42 study subjects around the university campus recording their eye movements, then determines their personality traits(特点) with “well-established questionnaires” for determining personality type, according to a summary of the study published by the site Science Daily.

The researchers fed the data into their AI algorithms and found that computers running the algorithms were able to record human eye movements and immediately determine a person’s major personality traits, such as “neuroticism, extraversion(外向), agreeableness, conscientiousness, as well as perceptual(感知的) curiosity”, the scientists wrote.

“The new findings could improve the way human beings interact with their computers and other high-tech devices, even robots, allowing for more natural and realistic social interactions with machines,” Loetscher said.

“People are always looking for improved, personalized services. Today’s robots and computers are not socially aware so they cannot adapt to non-verbal information,” Loetscher said in a statement quoted by Indian Express. “This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals.”

The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

1.What do the underlined words “peer into” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.understand B.stare at

C.search for D.concern about

2.How did the researchers conduct the research?

A.It was carried out in a lab.

B.42 subjects’ eye movements were recorded.

C.The students’ daily movements were tracked.

D.Its subjects’ personalities were determined by computer.

3.According to Tobias Loetscher, what can we know?

A.Robots and computers are socially conscious.

B.People care less about improved, personalized services.

C.Today’s robots and computers can accustom to non-verbal information.

D.The discovery will improve the interaction between human beings and machines.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Human Personality Traits

B.What Human Eye Movements Are

C.Tell Personalities by Eye Movements

D.How Humans and Machines Interact
