Online live streaming(直播) is big business nowadays, making huge profits and attracting hundreds of millions of viewers. In addition to adults, this rapidly expanding industry is now drawing underage live streamers, who are not of legal age. According to a report by the Sina Weibo Data Center, live streamers aged 11—16 accounted for 12 percent of all streamers in China. The figure has been rising still, while streamers are getting younger.

It has been found that a large number of underage streamers are drinking, smoking or even exposing to attract viewers. In the best case, live streaming will affect children’s schoolwork and waste their precious youth. In the worst case, they will develop bad values and an improper outlook, which will damage their future.

“Webcasts (web broadcast) are suspected of having a hotbed of improper program. Particularly, the involvement of underage streamers in this industry is making the situation more complex” said Mao Jianguo from Southern Metropolis Daily.

Some legal experts recently issued a report on protection of the children in the cyberspace(网络空间), suggesting that those under 14 should be restricted from independently live streaming and posting videos online.

However, it is unwise and impossible to totally reject all underage streamers but it's necessary and even urgent to standardize the underage webcast sector.

Fortunately, some webcast companies have said that they will not allow streamers under the age of 18 and online live streamers must register by using their ID. However, the reality is that many underage streamers choose to avoid that by using the IDs of adults, who also go through the face scanning required for conditions. All this means that to block underage streamers from webcasting, it’s not enough to depend on their self-discipline.

Parents should tell their children about the disadvantages of getting involved in live streaming so that children develop an objective attitude toward live streaming. Adults should not lend their IDs to children to register for live streaming. And the watchdogs must patrol(巡逻) webcast platforms more actively and remove all unauthorized videos of underage streamers.

I’m going to be completely honest. I have no idea how I ended up with this opportunity, I have no idea what I’m doing, but I am very happy to be here.

Last summer a friend tagged me in a Facebook post from BBC Earth and encouraged me to apply to the BBC Presenter Search 2018. The assignment was easy and hard, make a video shorter than 60 seconds where you talk about something in science you think is cool. Simple concept, but for me it was challenging as I want to talk about bryophytes(苔藓植物) forever (which is slightly longer than 60 seconds).

So I decided to make an attempt. I was going to make a 60 second video about sphagnum(水苔), commonly known as peat moss and uncommonly known as an unsung climate hero. Sphagnum is the plant genus that holds the most carbon in the world, it slowly builds up its carbon storage over hundreds of thousands of years and if undisturbed, they never let go of the carbon they gathered.

Making a short video on this was hard because I wanted to include everything. And it became even harder as I had no one to hold the camera. I tied my camera to the scrawniest little tree, swinging in the wind as a bird tried to chase me away from the mud. This chaos ended up as the video “Why sphagnum is awesome” on my channel. I submitted the video, but didn’t dare to write in the description section of the video that it was a submission, because I never imagined that I could win!

But I did.

I waited two months before I could tell people that I had won the search, and when the news came out, I received the most attention I’ve had in my entire life.

No matter your background, whether you want to pass the time or pass an exam, I really hope you enjoy the video!

A.It can form its carbon storage in a very slow way.

B.It is universally recognized as an unknown climate hero.

C.It won’t release the carbon without being disturbed.

D.It contains a large amount of carbon.

3.The underlined word “scrawniest” in Paragraph 4 probably means ___________.

A.weakest B.strongest

C.shortest D.most energetic

4.What can we learn from the author’s story?

A.She shows great interest in filming the video.

For many parents, making sure their children get the right amount of sleep can be stressful. This is especially true during high-pressure times such as exams when students tend to study all night for the next day.Unfortunately,it is often counterproductive(适得其反的)because with fewer hours to sleep, the teen brain doesn't get enough time to lay down what they've studied the night before.

In her groundbreaking book The Teenage Brain, neuroscientist Dr.Frances Jensen explains that bedtime isn't simply a way for the body to relax and recover after working, studying or playing a hard day. It is the glue that allows us not only to recollect our experiences but also to remember everything we've learned that day.Basically the more we learn, the more we need to sleep, which is why a good sleep is of great importance in achieving success at school.

Then how much sleep do teenagers need? There is no magic number for exactly how much sleep teenagers need, but the Austrian Centre for Education in Sleep(ACES)suggests 8 to 10 hours per day for high school adolescents. What happens if they don't get enough sleep?According to ACES,poor sleep will have all sorts of negative effects on teenagers, including rise in blood pressure, mood swings and impatient behaviours.Without adequate sleep the focus and attention drifts making it harder to receive information. The brain can no longer function to deal with information properly and access previously learned information.

So,how can parents help?If you think your child needs more sleep, try making gradual changes to their sleeping habits.Small increases have been shown to be effective in changing sleep patterns. And remember your children are going through a period of their lives when their brains and bodies are going through a lot of changes. Not only is your job to help make changes,it's also to ride the wave with them.It may not be easy, but they will thank you for it eventually.

Like bootcut jeans or farm fresh produce, television is proving its staying power regardless of trends. It seems to be just like a home cooked meal, never to be replaced, thanks to the wide application of big data.

Americans are still watching an average of five hours of TV each day and over 50%of homes have a television subscription service like Netflix or Hulu. This is due to the fact that television programming has undergone a renaissance(复兴),with cinema-quality programs on broadcast, new ways of delivery-Netflix or Hulu and other over-the-top(OTT)providers and now the promise of data-driven insights for advertisers. Data is the key to television's profitability.Advertisers have access to more audience information than ever, while networks and content providers use data,in addition to instinct(本能)to guide programming decisions. The abundance of data available to content providers, marketers and advertisers makes it possible to process, analyse and transform big data into profitable, useful insights.

For those 50% of homes with a subscription service,OTT TV is using data to make decisions not just about programming, but to guide viewers to the right content. The most famous example of data-driven content is Netflix's House of Cards,a popular TV series in America, designed to be a hit based on platform data like user viewing habits, ratings and preferences. But the content provider uses data to guide all of its decisions, ranging from title images to homepage layouts.

Netflix receives data from millions of set top boxes and online accounts, and then processes data using real time technology like Spark. These data have led to clearly-seen results, like a 20%-30%increase in programs'viewship numbers.

1.Why is"home cooked meal"mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic.

B.To show TV can't be replaced.

C.To give background information.

D.To prove big data can be applied.

2.What can we learn about the television industry?

A.It keeps making a high profit.

B.It's losing its viewers to cinemas.

C.It's too dependent on advertising.

D.It is updated to meet the challenges.

3.House of Cards is an example to show data-driven

A.content choice

B.subscription service

C.homepage layout

D.providers'preference

4.What is the writing purpose of the passage?

A.To show how television increases profits.

B.To explain how data benefit the TV industry.

C.To present how over-the-top television works.

D.To tell how the television industry goes digital.

You wake up,ready to seize the day, when an unexpected breakfast is served your way-a classic sandwich.Someone has decided to park their rust-bucket in your driveway, blocking you in.Is it illegal to park in front of a driveway?Yes,absolutely. But some folks love to"stick it to the man”.And now,you can stick it to them.We have a general disgust toward tow trucks( ),their drivers, and the industry as a whole. However,it's a necessary evil, and in certain applications, completely justified. This is one of those times.Take delight in it!

But remember this:if you want to have someone's car towed, call the police and have them handle it.Why call the police first?Because in the event that the owner loses his/her car and tries to sue(起诉)for damages or lost wages, you're removed of the situation and free of any responsibility. If you call a tow company directly, they may give the owner your information. And building a backyard Thunderdome(雷霆)to settle your differences in"the old-fashioned way”can be costly.

So,can you park in front of your own driveway?Unfortunately, parking in front of your own driveway is still technically illegal. The sidewalk and curb in front of your house is still city property, and determining who exactly is parking in front of the driveway is next to impossible for parking enforcement ( ).There are reports of many neighborhoods only receiving a ticket for parking in a driveway if someone calls to report it,so it depends how risky you're feeling. Here in L.A.,I see a handful of cars on my block consistently block their own driveway.I have rarely seen them ticketed or towed, but if it were me,I'd keep searching for a real spot.

1.What's the tone of Paragraph 1?

A.Humorous. B.Serious.

C.Sympathetic. D.Modest.

2.What is advised to do when you find a car blocking your driveway?

D.Use the old-fashioned way.

3.Why do people park on their own driveway?

A.It is technically allowed.

B.It is not against the law.

C.They like taking risks.

D.Finding a parking spot is hard.

The hero of The Good Doctor,a young surgeon with autism(自闭症),represents the show's title in more ways than one.In the show,Dr.Shaun is extremely skilled at curing patients, but he's also morally good, able to see the light in others even if he can't always connect.

“As a British,I'm probably quite cynical(愤世嫉俗)in general,"said Freddie, who plays the part of Dr.Shaun, during a recent interview on the show's set in Metro Vancouver."I think he's a lovely person. Getting to reflect that version of the world he sees or he believes in and his faith in humanity,I think,is great, especially at a time like today when there's so much negativity."

Through Shaun and other doctors at the fictional San Jose St.Bonaventure Hospital, the series explores what it means to be a good person, which impresses the viewers greatly."It brings people hope in dark times and that might be one reason why it became a runaway hit last year,"cast members said.

"It came about somewhat naturally,"Freddie said."It seemed unusual to me to put so much in the four, five months of filming, because we only did 10 episodes, and then sort of stepped away and did nothing...I wanted to live in that world longer.”

Freddie,26,admitted to feeling some anxiety about getting his performance right. He did a great deal of research on autism and continued to work with a full-time consultant."When you're opposite Freddie, Shaun is learning.Shaun is processing."Nicholas, who plays Dr.Melendez,commented."It's not impression. He doesn't slip into the character and play around. He lives it a lot, too."

Are you happy with your appearance? 1.

“Almost all the girls with single-fold eyelids in our class have had double-eyelid operations,” Zeng, a Senior 2 student from Chengdu, told Xinhua. Zeng had the same surgery done this summer. 2.

From popular photo-editing apps to plastic surgery, it seems that large eyes, pale skin and a skinny body are the only standard for beauty these days. But can following this standard really make us feel good about ourselves?

3. According to Huxiu News, over six in ten girls choose not to take part in certain daily activities, such as attending school, because they feel bad about their looks. As much as 31 percent of teenagers avoid speaking up in class because they worry that others will notice their looks.

Many teenagers are upset about their appearance because they believe in unrealistic standards of beauty, experts say. 4. Seeing all these things can make anyone believe that they’re too dark, too fat, too short, or too tall.

However, trying to live up to strict standards can make us feel anxious. What troubles us is not just our “imperfect” looks, but the fact that we criticize ourselves too much.

5. Plus-size models are being featured in some fashion shows. All of us should be just as confident as they are.

A. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes

B. Body image anxiety is common among teenagers

C. Guys care just as much as girls do about their body image

D. Some teenagers might feel negatively about their appearance

E. She and many of her classmates believe bigger eyes look more beautiful

F. It’s not uncommon for teenagers to feel confident about their appearance

G. Perfect faces and bodies are everywhere in advertising TV shows and social media

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans (寿命) that are similar to humans, jiving for around 50 to 70 years.

Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors (肿瘤) developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.

According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.

“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous (癌变的), large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.

This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox (悖论)”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.

The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.

“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”

1.Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer?

A.They have a rather large body size.

B.Their genes suffer no DNA damage.

C.Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.

D.They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.

2.According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals?

A.Deadly tumors. B.The huge body mass.

C.Cells killing themselves. D.Sensitivity to DNA damage.

3.What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?

A.Larger animals have protection from TP53.

B.The risk of cancer is not related to body size.

C.Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.

D.The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.

4.What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.

B.The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.

C.Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.

D.The extra copies of elephants, genes are used to cure cancer patients.

Aging brings wrinkles, sagging bodies and frustrating forgetfulness. But getting older is not all bad for many people. Mounting evidence suggests aging may be a key to happiness. There is conflicting research on the subject, however, and experts say it may all boil down to this: Attitude is everything.

Older adults tend to be more optimistic and have a more positive outlook on life than their younger and stressed opposites. The big question is why seniors are happier. A recent study suggests one reason: Older adults remember the past through happy memories. Aging can bring more cheer as people become more comfortable with themselves and their roles in society. The older adults said they were enjoying more time with their family, spending more time on hobbies and having greater financial security and did not have to work.

But others are doubtful about the link between happiness and growing older.

"The notion that those in old age are happiest is misleading," said Richard Easterlin, a professor of economics at the University of Southern California. "It is based on comparing people of different ages who are the same in terms of income, health, family life." Easterlin added, "When you take account of the fact that older people have lower income than younger, are less healthy, and more likely to be living alone, then you will find it hard to accept that they are happier.

In fact, scientists have found that as people age, their health declines and social networks disappear as their friends die, which can make the elderly less happy.

Even if one does give in to age's dark side, health and happiness don't always go hand-in-hand. It's all about attitude. Research by the University of Chicago’s Yang suggests that attitude about life and happiness, is partly shaped by the era in which a person was born. It turns out that individuals who adapt the best to changes also have the highest expected levels of happiness.

Despite the conflicting findings about aging and happiness, the good news is that there doesn’t appear to be a limit to how much happiness one can achieve in one’s life. “Most people desire happiness,” Easterlin said. “To my knowledge, no one has identified a limit to attainable happiness.”

1.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A.The key factor to older adults’ happiness

B.There is a conflict between aging and happiness

C.No one can define the limit to happiness.

D.The relationship between health and happiness.

2.Why are some seniors happier according to some experts?

A.They focus on what makes them feel good.

B.They have their own circle of friends.

C.They have better income after retirement.

D.They can enjoy social welfare services.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.People of the same age have the same sense of happiness.

B.Attitude may play a very important role in happiness.

C.People who adapt the best to changes are more likely to be unhappy.

D.Older adults who have more valuable life experience are more optimistic.

4.What’s the topic discussed in the passage?

A.Whether aging or attitude brings happiness.

B.Why seniors adapt the best to changes in society.

C.What the limit to an elder person’s happiness is.

D.How older people feel compared with younger people.

Born blind is tough in any case. But things were even harder for Srikanth Bolla who was born in a small village in India, where the common belief was that kids with disabilities were “of no use” and therefore, better off dead. Fortunately, Srikanth’s parents loved their son and refused to give him up. Instead, they encouraged the blind boy to dream big and reach for the star.

Srikanth did not disappoint his parents. The now twenty-four-year-old is the founder CEO of Bollant Industries.

Of course, getting here was not easy. Being both blind and poor meant that Srikanth had to face hard challenges. As a young boy, Srikanth attended a regular school near his home. Unfortunately, the students and teachers didn’t quite like him because of his disability. As a result, the young boy was largely ignored and often spent the entire day alone.

Concerned this would hold back Srikanth’ s development, his family decided to send him to a special school in Hyderabad. Sure enough, the young boy soon rose to the top of his class, earning awards in speech and debate competitions. But Srikanth was prevented from studying sciences when he reached 10th grade, because it was thought too “dangerous” for a blind student. Not wanting to give up, Srikanth took legal action and became the first blind student in the country allowed to study sciences.

Late, after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Srikanth set up Bollant Industries in 2012.For just four years, it has become a powerhouse with over 450 employees,70% of whom are physically challenged.

Being disabled doesn’ t mean being unable. “If the world looks at me and says, ‘Srikanth, you can do nothing,’ I will look back at the world and say I can do anything.” the young man says.
