Many people might feel lost during a major transition(转折)in life. Life coaching, however, is the best choice for anyone who is looking for ways to get through the tough path of life.

1. Some life coaches might focus only on certain types of situations, like advancing careers, while others may be willing to help with nearly any life transition.

A life coach will often act as an advisor for his clients(客户).2. Many times, he will also be able to look at a client’s life with n fair eye and ofter fresh ideas on certain situations. In doing so,the life coach will usually be able to help his client work through any problems he may face.

3. During this interview, the life coach should find out what the client’s wants, needs and  goals are in life.

How to help each client is different to everyone, and it is a very individualized process.4. Because    of this, a life coach must develop plans based on each client’s strengths, weaknesses, abilities and so on. A life coach will also usually take each client’s morals and values into consideration.

Some life coaches may be able to find employment with a few select universities and corporations. There are also a handful of large life coaching firms that hire life coaches as well. The majority of life coaches, however, work for themselves, opening their own life coaching practices.

5.

A. Methods that work for one client may not work for another.

B. A good life coach should try to satisfy all the needs of his clients.

C. He is often expected to listen closely to their concerns and problems.

D. Before a life coach can help a client, he first needs an in-depth interview.

E. Life coaches offer guidance to all types of people in different stages of their lives.

F. In some cases, life coaches may work together and offer a wider range of services.

G. Generally, there are no strict education requirements for starting a life coaching career.

Something’s happening at the lowest point on our planet, some 1,388 feet below sea level. The Dead Sea,a salt lake close to Israel,Jordan and the West Bank,is shrinking at an alarming rate—about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East.

“It’s not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea;it’s more like the whole region,”said photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series “The Dying Dead Sea”.

The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it,such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s, the courses of some water sources it relied upon were diverted. Israel, for instance, built a pipeline during that time so it could supply water throughout the country.

Mineral extraction(提取)industries are another main reason why the water levels are declining, experts say.The Dead Sea’s minerals have been popular for their medical power and can often be found in cosmetics(化妆品)and other consumer products.

And then,of course, there’s the Middle East’s hot,dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to refill itself.Last year,Israel and Jordan signed a $ 900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea’s water levels. It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea which would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump much needed water—some 300 million cubic meters annually—into the Dead Sea.

“This is the most important and significant agreement since the peace treaty with Jordan (in 1994),”said Silvan Shalom,Israel’s energy and water resources minister at the time.Whether the canal—estimated to take three years to complete—will work out positively and as planned remains to be seen.

For now, Küstner shows us that the Dead Sea remains very much a place of interest, with people from all over the world going there to swim in its salty waters.

1.How many reasons for the Dead Sea’s shrinking does the author mention in the passage?

A. One. B. Two.

C. Three. D. Four.

2.What does the underlined word “diverted” in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Switch. B. Improve.

C. Accomplish. D. Repair.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The Dead Sea is drying out causing water shortage to humans.

B. Küstner visited the Dead Sea to shoot TV series about people’s life.

C. The Dead Sea’s minerals have been used in some products.

D. The Dead Sea’s water levels have been stabilized by building a canal.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A. How the Dead Sea’s water levels’ decline influences human beings.

B. How important the Dead Sea is in Israel,Jordan and the West Bank.

C. What we should do to save the Dead Sea from being destroyed.

D. Why the Dead Sea is dying and the measure taken to save it.

When most people think of the word, “brand”, they think of the Nike Swoosh, Ford “blue oval,” McDonalds Golden Arches, or the “State Farm is There” jingle. They know what theywill get with a wellbranded product or service as promised. Think of Volvo, for instance, and your first thoughts are probably something like “well built, comfortable, Swedish” and, most of all, “safety”.

So a brand is a lot more than a logo, icon, or slogan. Catchy as it may sound, it isn’t the “brand” in the true sense—and it certainly isn’t what makes the brand valuable.A company’s brand is a promise. It’s a description of the company’s character. To some extent, it’s a mission; it’s how the company creates and delivers value. Also, it’s the feeling the company conveys to its stakeholders. Successful brands meet various challenges and consistently deliver on their promises, which is how they create brand value. To illustrate it, here are some brand promises from three highly successful, world-wide brands:The NFL: “To be the premier sports and entertainment brand that brings people together, connecting them socially and emotionally like no other.”Coca-Cola: “To inspire moments of optimism and uplift.”VirginAtlantic: “To be genuine, fun, contemporary, and different in everything we do at a reasonable price.”

Interesting. In none of the above cases does the brand promise describe what these companies do or provide. The NFL’s brand promise says nothing about football. Coca-Cola doesn’t talk about providing the best soft drinks in the world. And Virgin Atlantic’s promise goes a lot farther than seating passengers in its aircrafts.

Of course, a promise is nowhere near enough. The promise along with look, personality, time, money, and hard work combined can eventually help to build and maintain great brands and acquire a special patina(光泽) of what I call “me” appeal, showing my personal appetite. Apple has that patina. All of this can lead to sub-brands, like iPhone and iPad which acquire the glory of the parent brand.

Sometimes a brand is memorable because of little things. TD Bank has a special place in their branches for you to deposit all those coins you collect in jars. It is called the Penny Arcade that turns depositing your coins into a fun game in which you can even win prizes. Years ago, Dime Savings Bank in New York had a small dime(十分硬币) carrier. It was given to kids and then they’d fill up its 50 slots (投币口) with a dime in each one and bring it to exchange for a $5 bill.

1.What can we know from the first 2 paragraphs?

A. People tend to believe in top brands because they deliverwhat is promised.

B. Well branded Swedish products are of good quality but more costly than others.

C. Well branded products are faced with great challenges of quality currently.

D. A company shouldn’t care about logos because they can’t make the brand valuable.

2.In the author’s opinion, a brand promise is ___________.

A. thecontract between a company and the people who interact with it

B. the only way to build and maintain a great brand’s value

C. a description of what a company actually does for its consumers

D. an important factor contributing to the success of a brand

3.According to the passage, what isprobably “Virgin Atlantic”?

A. A financial company. B. A high-tech software product.

C. An airline company. D. An entertainment product.

4.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Buying a certain brand says nothing about the person who buys it.

B. Little things can mean a lot and make a brand memorable.

C. Sub-brands are relatively easy to build and generate huge profits.

D. Dime Savings Bank’s dime carriers are difficult for kids to operate.

I was sure that I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I fumbled(摸索) in my pockets to see if there were any cigarettes, which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches; they had taken those. I looked through the bars at the guard. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him “Have you got a light” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes unconsciously locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don't know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness; perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn't want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and caused a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.

I kept smiling at him, now thinking of him as a person and not just a guard. “Do you have kids” he asked. “Yes, here, here.” I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes were filled with tears. I said that I feared that I'd never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the prison, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.

Children who have developed leadership skills are sure to have a bright future. 1. Not only will they gain more self-esteem and interact more easily with their peers, they can also make an impact on their community. These qualities will continue to develop as children grow up. Here are simple techniques to develop children’s leadership qualities.

Discuss peer pressure. Children are often exposed to peer pressure and worry about how others view them. 2. Leadership requires being socially involved, but still honoring personal morals and standards. Discuss hypothetical (假设的) peer pressure situations and ask kids to consider how they’d behave in different situations.

3. When they’re able to clearly show their thoughts, they feel more self-confident and are able to deal with complex problems. You can help by encouraging children to speak out and by listening seriously to their thoughts. Although many children go through rebellious stages, don’t enforce silence. Instead, suggest self-expression.

Teach by example. 4. Even if they don t express it aloud, children may see you as a role model. Model leadership behavior by helping others, volunteering in leadership positions and taking action in everyday life.

Develop children’s individual talents and encourage participation. Every child has potential for leadership skills, but not every child develops skills in the same way. 5. A child might be a talented athlete or skilled at painting and drawing. Find ways for kids to develop these skills in a group setting, which promotes teamwork and social skills.

A. Encourage children to express themselves.

B. Pay attention to specific interests and abilities.

C. Find volunteer and community service opportunities.

D. Children start benefiting from leadership skills at any age.

E. Children with self-awareness have a greater ability to lead.

F. Children observe the adults in their lives, and value what they see.

G. Talk with your children about the importance of avoiding peer pressure.

Britain faces social problems as lots of people are set to lose their jobs in technological revolution, Bank of England’s chief economist warned.

Andy Haldane said the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution will make the machine replace humans to do thinking things. The dark side of the change could be a much bigger breakdown of employment than in Victorian times, with professions such as accountancy (会计) among those at risk.

A report by the accountancy firm PwC last month warned that more than 7 million jobs in Britain had been lost over the next 20 years as technological change sweeps though workplaces.

The majority of these are in jobs in the retail, transport and manufacturing industries. However, other traditional professional sectors could also be at serious risk.

Economists treat the arrival of increasingly intelligent computers and robots as the fourth industrial revolution. The first was the shift from agricultural to urban societies, the second saw the widespread use of electricity and steel, and the third was the digital revolution when computers, the Internet and mobile phones were developed.

Mr Haldane said the hollowing-out (空洞化) experienced in the past years could be on a greater scale in the future so it is important to learn the lessons of history and ensure that people are given training to take advantage of new opportunities.

“Jobs were effectively taken by machines of various types, there was a hollowing-out of the jobs market, which left many people for a long period out of work and struggling to make a living,” Haldane added, “That heightened social and financial tensions, and led to a rise in inequality. This is the dark side of technological revolution.”

“That hollowing-out is going to be potentially on a much greater scale in the future, when we have machines thinking and doing the cognitive and technical skills of humans.” Mr Haldane said professions like accountancy could be among those hardest hit by the rise of AI. But he suggested economists could escape.

1.What is the dark side mentioned in the text?

A. The hollowing-out has become a major social problem.

B. Less and less people have the desire to learn accountancy

C. Intelligent computers and robots decrease good workers.

D. The technological revolution causes people to lose jobs.

2.Why are economists the lucky dog in the new technological revolution?

A. The study about economy is at a low level.

B. Economists work on a traditional professional job.

C. There is no machine that can work as an economist.

D. Economists have the chance to avoid technological revolution.

3.What should be done to deal with the serious situation?

A. To call for people to devote more to studying history.

B. To teach people to grasp the chances technological revolution brings about.

C. To warn people not to work on transport and manufacturing industries.

D. To ask workers to develop and think as the intelligent computers and robots do.

4.What attitude did Haldane have towards the future employment?

A. Positive. B. Aggressive.

C. Critical. D. Worried.

It’s common knowledge that some countries have higher life expectancies than others, but the city you live in can also affect your health.

Some cities are hard on their residents. In places with poor city planning, for example Lagos, which was called out recently by the Economist Intelligence Unit, public spaces are few, making outdoor activities hard. Lack of infrastructure (基础建设) blocks the streets with cars and the air with pollutants, and residents work long hours for little money.

These are just some of the factors added up by Spotahome, a rental agency. They’ve analyzed data from a range of sources, including the World Health Organization, TripAdvisor and the CIA World Factbook to score each city on health, gym availability and quality, life expectancy, obesity, green space and other elements to make a list to work out which are the world’s healthiest cities.

The list is certainly Euro-centric and sunshine is seen as a positive factor. It does go some way towards suggesting which cities are getting it right in providing a good life for their residents.     “Sorry seems to be the hardest word”—that is one of Elton Johns most popular songs. But not every public figure seems to find it so tough to say that powerful five-letter word.

In recent days public figures, from politicians to stars, have all publicly expressed remorse. But with so much remorse, how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression of remorse?

Specifically, saying sorry should be a realization that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to make amends. “People wants the response to be personal to them. They want to feel that they’re being listened to and taken seriously,” says Martin Stone.

Firstly, it is important to show that you understand. It is vital that any group or a person making an apology understands the focus—is it sorry for the way it’s acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do? Watch out for the speed of response. The quicker the apology comes, the better it indicates that the person making it has felt an immediate sense of guilt.

If sincere, the person making the apology will be looking for clues (线索) to see if he or she is being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. Performed apologies always have a sense of being “acted out”, and are often accompanied by too many unnatural gestures.

For a sincere apology, it is also important to avoid promises that can’t be kept. Don’t say that you’ll make sure that this will not happen again if you re not confident that it wont. It could come back to bite you. And do remember that the use of “but” can hugely change the tone (语气) of an apology. As Stone points out, “I’m sorry but...” sounds like you are making excuses and aren’t actually taking any form of responsibility.

1.What does the underlined word “remorse” probably mean?

A. Feelings. B. Appereciation. C. Regret. D. Sympathy.

2.Which of the following indicates it’s a performed apology?

A. Swearing it will not happen again. B. Avoiding eye contact with the listener.

C. Showing you understand his /her feelings. D. Paying attention to the listener’s reaction.

3.What is stressed in the last paragraph?

A. The attitude. B. The tone of voice.

C. The body language. D. The choice of language.

4.What is the purpose of the text?

A. To explain what a good apology is.

B. To discuss how to give a formal apology.

C. To show why we should apologize in life.

D. To teach us how to tell if an apology is sincere.

The secret to happiness is keeping busy, research has found. Keeping the mind occupied with tasks—no matter how meaningless—keeps off negative emotions, the study found.

However, the bad news is that humans are seemingly born to be lazy in order to save energy, according to Professor Christoper Hsee, a behavioral scientist at Chicago University.

In a study, 98 students were asked to complete two surveys. After they had completed the first, they were made to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. They were given a choice of either handing in the first survey nearby or a more distant location they had to walk to. Whichever option they chose, they received a chocolate bar. It turned out that about two-thirds (68 students) chose the lazy option. Those who had taken the walk reported feeling happier than those who had stayed put.

Professor Hsee concluded that keeping busy helped keep people happy. He said the findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, had policy implications (暗示).

“Governments may increase the happiness of idle (无所事事的) citizens by having them build bridges that are actually useless,” he proposed.

At the personal level, he advised, “Get up and do something. Anything. Even if there really is no point to what you are doing, you will feel better for it. He added, Incidentally, thinking deeply or engaging in self-reflection counts as keeping busy, too.

“You do not need to be running around. You just need to be engaged, either physically or mentally.”

1.According to the passage, why can keeping busy make people happy?

A. It can help people keep off laziness. B. It can make people sleep better.

C. It can help get rid of unpleasant feelings. D. It can give people a sense of achievement.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The finding may contribute to politics.

B. The officials have taken Pro. Hsee’s advice

C. In the study one third students handed in the first survey nearby.

D. Governments can increase citizens’ happiness by building bridges.

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A. Everybody is certainly born to be lazy.

B. Being engaged can add to the possibility of being pleased.

C. Prof. Hsee’s finding was published in Psychological Science.

D. Only by keeping working all the time can you gain happiness.

4.Why does the author write this passage?

A. To explain what happiness is.

B. To advise people not to be idle.

C. To advise people to do whatever they prefer.

D. To show people how to take work seriously.
