3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to create things we need very quickly and easily using 3D printers. But can you imagine printing food?

Some scientists are trying to revolutionize the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will be as common as the microwave oven or blender.

Scientists say that it’ll be quite easy: you simply have to select a recipe and put the raw food ‘inks’ into the printer. You can also modify the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.

Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a lot more efficient. For example, alternative ingredients (原料) such as proteins from algae, beetroot leaves and insects could be converted into tasty products.

Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphasia (a swallowing disorder). They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favorite foods so that they would not have trouble in swallowing them.

However, some people think that a future of 3D food printing would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those from growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes could be printed from a raw “food ink”. Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business. Also, there are concerns about the nutritional value of printed food: is it really possible to be get the nutrients we need from food-based inks and gels (凝胶)?

What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pleasure of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.

1.Which of the following best describes 3D food printing?

A.Quick and popular. B.Easy and efficient. C.Nutritious and tasty. D.Soft and convenient.

2.Why do some think that 3D food printing would be a disaster?

A.Traditional food would disappear. B.Many people could lose their jobs.

C.It would affect the people’s health. D.We could all eat the same food.

3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.3D food printing will replace traditional cooking. B.The future of 3D food printing is uncertain.

C.It would hurt our tradition of food culture. D.3D food printing would be a failure.

Over a hundred years ago in 1911, something strange was found in the glaciers of Antarctica. Grilffith Taylor—an Australian geologist, had discovered a blood red steam pouring out of the ice cascades(瀑布)of Talor Glacier! Popularly known as the Blood Falls, scientists had not been able to find the reason behind the blood red liquid flowing through the ice---until recently. The mystery of the Blood Falls had finally been solved.

When these falls were first discovered, scientists had believed that the red colour came from a large amount of red algae(海藻)concentrated in the water. Red algae contain a pigment(色素)which reflects red light, making the algae appear red.

This theory made sense, until it was later found that algae do not play a part in the red color of the flowing liquid at all. What really causes Talor Glacier’s waters appear blood red, is the presence of iron oxide in the liquid. The waters of the blood falls are rich in salt and iron content, and when this water comes in contact with the air, it turns red—just like rust! The water in these falls is often referred to as “brine” by scientists because of the high salt content in the water.

This reasoning behind the red colors of the falls was found back in 2003. However, the entire mystery had not yet been solved. How is it then, that the Blood Falls are not frozen?

Researchers at the University of Colorado and University of Alaska found that inside the glacier, there was a network of channels and reservoirs that move the water around. Salt water has a lower freezing temperature. In addition, when any substance undergoes a change in state, it gives off heat. Therefore, the brine actually warm itself up while it’s freezing! How this works, is that when the brine is flowing through the Talor Glacier, some of it does freeze. As a result of changing state from liquid to ice, the brine gives off heat. This heat is enough to keep the rest of the rest of the brine in liquid form, which is why it flows out of the glacier.

Incredible new chemistry facts found, any mystery solved!

1.According to the text, the red algae theory was once considered ________.

A.ridiculous B.reasonable

C.impractical D.complex

2.Why does the Blood Falls look red in colour?

A.Because there is too much salt and iron in its water.

B.Because its liquid is rich in red algae.

C.Because the following liquid reflects and sunlight

D.Because the air is thin and rare in Antarctica.

3.What is the main reason for the Blood Fall’s not freezing?

A.The water continued flowing constantly.

B.There is too much salt in the water.

C.The brine gives off heat while freezing

D.Temperatures aren’t high enough for flowing water.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The discovery of the blood glacier.

B.The birth of the Talor Glacier.

C.The flowing red water in Antarctica.

D.The mystery of the Blood Falls.

Humans and gorillas shared evolution for 23 million years. Their paths separated only six million years ago. Research on how gorillas communicate can help us understand human language development.

Understanding how the brain works helps us see a connection between language development and non-verbal signs. These signs or movements include things like the way we move our hands or bodies or the different expressions our faces have in different social situations. A new study on gorillas showed that the right side of the body is controlled by the left part of the brain and it is also the location for language development.

Two cameras were used to film all of one ape’s movements. One of the first results was that gorillas use their right hands more when they are doing actions with their heads or mouths at the same time. This shows that there is a connection between how our brain works and the reason we use one side of our body more than the other. In addition, we can use the results of the study and our knowledge about brains to help us understand more about how language first developed in humans.

Dr Forrester, who did the study, says the results can be useful in other ways, such as understanding language development in children. For example, some children have serious illness called “autism” which can stop them communicating normally with people. It might be possible to use the same study method to find out which children have this illness when they are very young. Doctors will then be able to start treatment early.

1.Which of the following may have a connection with right-handedness?

A.Communication. B.Intelligence.

C.Social position. D.Social success.

2.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

A.The right side of the body. B.The mouth.

C.The left part of the brain. D.The front part of the head.

3.Who might benefit most from the results of the study?

A.Photographers of gorillas. B.Zoo keepers.

C.Researchers on movement. D.Children with illness.

4.We can infer from the text that gorillas ___________.

A.prefer to use the right hand instead of the left hand

B.have a complex form of non-verbal communication

C.help us better develop our language abilities

D.share the same body language with humans

How to Make a Complaint in English

Most of us do not enjoy complaining. But sometimes we must do it to get a solution.1.. An effective English complaint often has the following three steps.

Explain the problem

To do it effectively, you must use polite and respectful language.2..For example, if you are at a restaurant and the server forgets to bring your drink, saying “You didn’t bring my drink” may be too direct. It may sound critical and cause the server to become defensive. So you can use phrases to politely explain your problem.

State your feelings

This step is often not necessary.3.. Some problems have easy and quick solutions. For example, politely telling people that they forgot something or overcharged you usually leads to a speedy solution. But imagine that you are receiving poor service.4.. In these cases, you need to politely express how you feel.

5.

The third step is to ask for action to be taken on the problem. This is an important step. Depending on who the listener is, you or they may need to ask someone else to take action.

A.Ask for action

B.Blame the problem on them

C.You should avoid complaining

D.It will depend on how bad the problem is

E.In English, polite language is usually indirect

F.Today,we will tell you how to make a complaint in English

G.Or,maybe there is a continuing problem in your apartment building

Cancer signs differ depending on which part of the body is affected by a tumour(肿瘤). It’s been said that your height could shows whether you’re at risk of a deadly tumour. Are you more likely to get cancer if you’re tall or short?

Cancer is a deadly condition that is caused by cells growing and reproducing uncontrollably. These cancerous cells can destroy the surrounding healthy cells and organs. Having an unhealthy diet, smoking and not doing enough regular exercise are all risk factors(因素)for cancer.

But people are also more likely to develop cancer if they’re taller. Dr Leonard Nunney, from the University of California Riverside said taller people are more at risk of several different types of cancer.

“For every 10cm in height, the risk increases by about 13 percent for women, and about 11 percent for men,” he said. “The link may be caused by taller people having more cells in the body. One of the major assumptions was that something happening early in life was making your cells easier to suffer from cancer and causing you to be tall incidentally.” Nunney told The Guardian.

“It is not quite right that cancer comes from an unhealthy diet or the fact that your parents happen to be tall. Actually, only a large number of cells cause that to come about. Taller people have an increased cell division rate, which could increase the risk of cancer,” warned Nunney.

However, Cancer Research UK said people didn’t need to worry about their height. A number of studies over the years have shown that taller people seem to have a little higher risk of cancer. This study suggests it’s because taller people are made of more cells, so there’s more potential for one of them to go wrong and become cancerous. But the increased risk is small and there’s plenty you can do to reduce the risk of developing cancer such as not smoking and keeping a healthy weight.

1.Who is more likely to develop cancer?

A.A person who is too short.

B.A person with a light diet.

C.A person whose parents are shorter than others.

D.A person who takes little exercise.

2.What can we infer from Nunney’s view?

A.Shorter people have more cells in their body.

B.Men are more likely to get cancer than women.

C.Taller people are more likely to develop some kinds of cancer.

D.Women are more concerned about their health than men.

3.What does the underlined word“that”in paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The right B.Diet. C.A number. D.Cancer.

4.Which of the following does Cancer Research UK agree with?

A.More and more people are suffering from cancer.

B.People can form a good habit to reduce the risk of developing cancer.

C.People should control their height to reduce the risk of having cancer.

D.More and more people are focusing on their height.

Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, turned 200 years old in 2018! It has been called the first true work of science fiction and the first English horror novel. The story has been told over and over again—not just in books, but in movies and television shows. To celebrate, New York City s Morgan Library & Museum has a special exhibit on the writer and the book.

The reason for the success is that Doctor Frankenstein and his creature, the monster, live on in numerous remakes, shows, and even comic books.

Mary Shelley’s classic is one of the most famous horror stories of all time. But Frankenstein is so much more than that. It presents ideas or themes that are still important today. Knowing something about her suffering can help readers have a good knowledge of her work. Shelley wrote the book when she was only 18 years old. And it relates to her own sad life. Her mother died 10 days after she gave birth to her. She knew what it meant to be a child without a mother. It is no surprise that Shelley wrote a story about a motherless creature one that is very much alone in the world.

Losing her mother shortly after her birth in 1797 was only part of her life story. Mary Shelley gave birth to four children, but only one child survived to adulthood.

Around the age of 17, she fell in love with the poet Percy Shelley. The two writers got married in 1816. However, the marriage of Percy and Mary Shelley was short-lived. Her husband died in a sailing accident in 1822. She was still in her twenties when she became a widow. In some ways, it’s not entirely surprising that she ended up with a story about a monster without a mother.

After the publication of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley continued to write. She died from brain cancer on February 1,1851. Her most important legacy is a monster that is still very much alive today.

1.What do we know about Frankenstein?

A.It exists in different forms of art.

B.It is a romantic fiction.

C.It is not popular with modern readers.

D.It has been made into the most interesting science fiction movie.

2.What did Shelley and the monster have in common?

A.They were quite creative. B.They felt lonely.

C.They had the same character. D.They behaved badly at home.

3.Why did the author mention Shelley’s sufferings?

A.To show pity to her. B.To introduce her to readers.

C.To make readers understand her novel better. D.To show her difficulty in writing the novel.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Success comes from struggle.

B.Hardship creates a great person.

C.Shelley’s experiences contribute to the success of Frankenstein.

D.Frankenstein comes into the market.

My wife and I were down at the beach and trying to find a place to park in one of the many, and somewhat expensive, public parking lots. We were trying to get down to the beach in time to watch the sunsetone of my all time favorite things to do. After several failed attempts, we finally found one spot in the last lot so we pulled into the only space available.

As we were about to pay the price of parking there, a woman came up to us and said she had just paid for two hours(all the time we needed) but she had just been called back home and asked if we would like to have her parking pass. She refused to take any money for it and insisted that we take it. We gladly accepted it and thanked her for her kindness.

It was truly a “paying it forward” experience that we have often done, but one that hasn’t been done to us that often. I smiled at her with such gratitude. It was more than the price of the parking pass. Accepting the kindness of others is part of this process. We felt that and blessed by that kindness.

We got down to the beach in time to watch the sun setting because of this woman’s kindness and we were so grateful. It was a wonderful experience and the sunset was such a wonderful sight

1.What problem did the author meet at the beach?

A.He couldn’t afford the parking fee. B.He didn’t find time to watch sunset.

C.He failed to find a good place to relax. D.He met with difficulty when parking his car.

2.Why did the woman give her parking pass to the author?

A.It would be out of date soon. B.She had to go home quickly.

C.It offered too short a parking period. D.She expected the author to watch the sunset on time.

3.What does the underlined word “gratitude” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Apology. B.Appreciation. C.Regret. D.Sadness.

4.Which can be the best title for the text?

A.The Gift of a Sunset B.A Hard Parking

C.The Beauty of Dawn D.A Woman’s Bad Luck

Nice Places in America

The Doaks’ House in Waterford, Ohio

In the small town of Waterford, Ohio, one local household stands out. One fall Saturday every other year or so, Roger and Shirley Doak open their doors for family, friends and strangers. Since the 1960s, they’ve turned a day devoted to making apple butter into an all-day event. They start the fire at dawn, then take turns stirring it, and have a buffet until sunset. By the end of the day, they’ve created apple butter together.

Pflugerville High School, Texas

In a school of about 2,300 people, students love each other, regardless of race or ability. Perhaps the school spirit comes from events like Pay It Forward Day, which rewards students for kindness or the Coats for Kids Drive, a competition challenging schools to donate the most coats-which Pflugerville has won for the past six years.

Oriole Park in Baltimore, Maryland

Sure, Oriole Park in Baltimore, Maryland, is a fun place to watch a baseball game with a family. But this stadium goes beyond rooting for the home team; it also roots for acts of kindness. During weekend games, one of the nicest students to catch our eye was a middle school boy named Thomas Moore who grew his hair long enough to donate it to children with cancer.

Rock Hall, Maryland

The sign to Rock Hall, Maryland, should be your first mark that you’ll be welcomed. It shows off the town’s motto, “Nice People Live Here.” And they aren’t just empty words. Take a walk around the town and you’ll see so many kind waves that strangers must think they’ve been mistaken for someone else.

1.What can you do when you attend the event in the town of Waterford, Ohio?

A.Donate clothes to strangers. B.Make your favourite apple juice.

C.Experience the friendly school life. D.Watch local people making apple butter.

Last summer holiday, I tried a new way to explore the Forbidden City, where left me deep impression. To avoid waste time buying a ticket on the spot, I made a reservation online. I got my ticket from a machine without difficulty and start the exploration. I was deep attracted by the grand architecture. To my excite, I could scan the QR codes to get detailed informations. With the vr glasses on, I even found me back to the time when the palace was under construction. How impressive!     It is very important for kids to be courageous. A brave child is more likely to withstand negative peer pressure, say no to temptations (诱惑) and fight the good fight. 1. It boosts kids’ resilience (适应力), confidence and willpower as their as well as their learning, performance and school engagement. Here are several ways to develop kids’ courage:

Set a model of courage. Kids who watch their parents stick their necks out to do the right thing are more likely to do the same. 2. Then express how good it feels when you conquer your fear instead of taking a shortcut. Your kids will learn how to take on the tough challenge they face by witnessing how you tackle your fears.

3. Research finds that kids are more likely to be courageous if they believe that their parents encourage them to support those in need. Discuss bravery with your kids: Tell them “Courage is making the choice to do what you know is right even if you are afraid.”

Ask your kids to share their acts of bravery. Learning to be brave takes practice, so encourage your children to do something courageous every day.4.A mom I talked to had her kids share their brave deeds at dinner time.

Teach your kids how to reduce their fears. If not kept under control, fear can be powerful. 5. You might encourage positive self-talk, such as saying, “I can handle this” or “I have courage to do this.” Or teach your child to take slow, deep breaths to find courage.

A.Talk about values and courage.

B.Courage has other surprising benefits.

C.The good news is that courage can be taught.

D.Teach your children simple strategies to be brave.

E.Let your children see you step out of your comfort zone.

F.In today’s uncertain world, kids will need courage and confidence.

G.Then take time to focus on their courageous breakthroughs.

Every day is Earth Day — probably you’ve heard it before. Nearly all Americans have access to a plastic recycling program. You may be surprised to learn how many types of plastic packaging can be recycled into new, useful products!

Ford Motor Company has been helping to promote the use of environmentally-friendly auto parts — and one way they’re doing that is by using recycled plastic bottles for underbody shields (底盘保护罩) and other auto parts on cars.

“The underbody shield is a large part, and for a part that big, if we use solid plastic, it would likely weigh three times as much,” said Thomas Sweder, a design engineer of Ford Motor Company. “We look for the most durable and highest performing materials to work with to make our parts, and in this case, we are also creating many environmental benefits.”

In the past decade, the global use of plastics in vehicle parts has grown quickly. Ford alone uses about 1.2 billion recycled plastic bottles per year, about 250 bottles per vehicle on average.

When plastic bottles are thrown into a recycling bin, they are collected with thousands of others and cut into small pieces. These pieces are typically sold to suppliers who turn them into fibers, by melting and pressing them. Then they are mixed together with other various types of fiber in a process and used to make a sheet of material which is formed into the auto parts.

Due to its light weight, recycled plastic is ideal for the manufacturing of underbody shields. These shields reportedly also help create a significantly quieter environment on the new 2020 Ford Escape.

This is not the only way that Ford has been committed to environmental protection; the automotive company recently partnered with McDonald’s coffee suppliers to recycle all of their coffee roasting biowaste into headlights.

“Ford is among the leaders when it comes to using recycled materials such as this,” Sweder said. “This material meets all of our requirements for durability and performance.”

1.Why does Ford choose recycled plastic as environmentally-friendly materials for vehicle parts?

A.Because it’s new and useful. B.Because it’s cheap and easy to get.

C.Because it’s durable and light. D.Because it’s portable and well-performed.

2.What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

A.The global use of plastics. B.The mixing process of fibers.

C.The advantages of plastic bottles. D.The formation of the new auto material.

3.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

A.Recycling coffee roasting biowaste. B.Improving vehicle parts.

C.Recycling plastic bottles into auto parts. D.Creating a quieter environment.

4.What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Every Day is Earth Day

B.Ford Takes the Lead in Plastic Recycling

C.Ecological Auto Underbody Shields

D.A Pioneer in Promoting Environmental Protection

When you think of the Himalayas, you may picture tall, rocky, snow-covered peaks. But that’s not true.

The subnival (亚冰雪的) region is the zone between the treeline and the snowline. It is 5 to 15 times as large as the areas of glaciers (冰川) and permanent snow, which means studying it is vital to understanding the Himalayas as a whole.

The treeline is the edge of an ecosystem where trees are able to grow, and beyond the treeline environmental conditions become too tough to allow tree growth. Meanwhile, snowlines are the boundaries on mountains that separate areas with permanent snow (where snow is present for the majority of the year) from areas with seasonal or no snow.

Researchers used satellite data from 1993 to 2018 to measure plant cover between 4,150 meters and 6,000 meters above sea level. The scientists discovered that the greatest increase in plant cover was between an altitude of 5,000 meters and 5,500 meters. Subnival plants mostly include small shrubs and grasses.

Even areas once completely occupied by glaciers now hold rocks covered with mosses (苔藓), lichen (地衣), and sometimes even flowers. In addition, the snowline seems to be retreating, while the treeline is expanding. This shows that the region is becoming warmer, causing more melting of snow and allowing vegetation to move up in height.

In the past 40 years, 25%of all Himalayan ice has been lost due to global warming. Himalayan glaciers are reducing by about 0.5 meters each year. The rate of glacier melting has doubled in this decade. The melting of glaciers increases water in the region, making it wetter. Receding snow also forces the snowline to move up, providing a greater amount of area for the warm and moist conditions, which are perfect for vegetation growth.

As of now, we do not know whether vegetation will accelerate or slow down the rate of glacier melting.

1.How does the writer develop the third paragraph?

A.By making explanations.

B.By giving some examples.

C.By analyzing cause and effect.

D.By listing specific data.

2.What does the underlined word “retreating” mean in Paragraph 5?

A.Disappearing.

B.Lengthening.

C.Withdrawing.

D.Widening.

3.What is the direct effect of global warming on the Himalayas?

A.The snowline moves up.

B.Glaciers are melting faster.

C.The subnival area is wetter.

D.Plants grow much better.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.The Climate of Himalayas Is Changing.

B.Icebergs in the Himalayas Disappear.

C.Plants Are Diverse in the Himalayas.

D.Plant Life Spreads in the Himalayas.
