Are you likely to suffer from loss of memory from time to time? Smart cameras can now remind you.

Khai Truong at the University of Toronto in Canada and his colleagues have created a smartphone app that records interactions with household objects. The system involves barcode-like (像条形码的) markers that the user sticks to objects whose use they would like to track.

With the smartphone worn around your neck, the app automatically records a short video clip (片段) when a marked object comes into view. “The user is able to look through the application and see the last time they interacted with it,” says Truong. The app can help people track the state of objects - such as whether they locked a door or switched a light off - as well as routine actions. Ai present, it successfully records about 75 percent of interactions, but only works for fixed objects.

A similar but separate system can solve the problem. E. Akin Sisbot and Jonathan Connell at IBM Research in New York have invented a ceiling-mounted (安装在天花板上的) camera that monitors objects and people. It continuously watches an area, such as a tabletop in your home, tracking the placement of objects in relation to one another. It also remembers who first brought an object into the field of view as well as if anyone moved it afterwards. When asked, “Where is my wallet?” the system might respond, “It is next to the vase, under the magazines.”

The camera could also be used in factories or operating theatres to track vital tools, says Sisbot For now, the camera uses a depth sensor to spot things. It is limited to detecting objects thicker than 3 centimetres, meaning that it has trouble with thin objects such as a closed laptop placed flat on a table.

The accuracy of such smart camera systems may need to improve before they are widely adopted. “You've got to trust the technology for it to be of any comfort or reassurance” says Geoffrey Ward at the University of Essex in the UK.

1.How does the smartphone app mentioned in paragraph 2 work?

A.By recording the movement of marked objects.

B.By informing owners of potential dangers.

C.By switching off electricity automatically.

D.By scanning barcodes of household objects.

2.What is the limitation of the ceiling-mounted camera?

A.It hardly senses objects without barcode-like makers.

B.It fails to find objects thinner than 3 centimetres.

C.It is unlikely to make a sound.

D.It is unable to recognize movable objects.

3.What's Geoffrey Ward's attitude towards the smart camera systems?

A.Supportive. B.Ambiguous.

C.Concerned. D.Sceptical

4.What's the best title for the text?

A.New Smartphones Make Life Easier

B.Smart Cameras Help Increase Home Security

C.New Systems Help People with Memory Problems

D.Camera Designers Face New Challenges

My mum is about to have a spinal (脊柱的) operation. The operation is relatively minor, but does carry a risk of paralysis. Friends and family have reacted to this news by taking in such pessimistic terms that Mum has come to label this kind of talk as “psychological theft”. It occurs when other people increase your anxiety rather than provide comfort.

Last week Mum went to the post office and ran into Geoff who works for the local school. “How are you?” he asked. “Not great,” she replied. “I’ve been having some trouble with my back and I’m going to need an operation.” “Oh, the back is the most dangerous place to operate on!” he responded. “My mum had that and she was in terrible pain. Make sure you get all your affairs in order before you go under the knifeit takes months to get over it!” Geoff’s intention had been benign (美好的). He’d given his own mother’s story to show sympathy. However, Mum only heard pain, danger, knife, and months.

In the past few weeks, Mum’s mates and colleagues have told her stories about how their Auntie Trisha, who had just received an operation, was left speechless after hearing that she required a rapid follow-up operation; and how their neighbour, who had only a minor operation, never walked again.

It’s really not that difficult to think of alternative things they could have said that would be equally true, but more beneficial to bear. “The specialists in our hospitals are among the best in the world. It’s amazing what they can do these days!”—that’s a good one. “You’re going to feel much better afterwards.” —that’s another.

I’m not suggesting patients should be sheltered from the reality of the risks they’re taking. But if the decision to have an operation can’t really be avoided, what’s the purpose of underlining the drawbacks? It’s just common sense to say: “Get well soon, and how can I help?”

1.What does “psychological theft” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.The negative comments. B.Psychological disorder.

C.The comforting words. D.Physical disability.

2.How might the author’s mum have felt after hearing what Geoff said?

A.Sympathetic. B.Relieved.

C.Grateful D.Worried.

3.How did the author explain his idea in the text?

A.By using examples. B.By analysing causes.

C.By following time order. D.By discussing research findings.

4.What lesson does the author want to teach us?

A.Treat patients with adoration.

B.Communicate more with other patients.

C.Be well-prepared for unavoidable operations.

D.Find an appropriate way to comfort patients.

On the morning of Jan 25, the very day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, I was unpleasantly woken up by a phone call. It was for my father. He picked it up, and I sensed from his shaky voice that something went wrong.

As soon as he hung up, my father turned to my mother and then me, saying, “It was the secretary. He called everyone to meet in the office right now because of the outbreak of the COVID-19.”

“But dad, it’s the Spring Festival!” How I wished my father could change his mind and stay with us. Wasn’t the day meant for families to be together? My father, an official working in another town, seldom came back home. And was the virus serious enough to keep us apart? I was upset. To my great disappointment, father left home without hesitation, comforting me by saying that he would be back soon.

In the following days, news loaded with the fast spread of COVID-19 and the astonishing death toll scared everyone in the country. Father never returned home, only occasionally talking on the WeChat, over which he told us how he went from door to door, checking every family and persuading people to stay at home. I realized that my father was working in dangerous conditions under incredibly great burden. He always looked tired but determined. Every time I told him to take care of himself, he would smile and say, “Don’t worry, son. Your father is as strong as a bull.” At those moments, tears would well up in my eyes, and all my complaints would go away before I could say anything. The talk was brief but meant a lot to me.

I learned from the media that the medical staff, government officials, and almost everyone involved were working in the battle against the COVID-19. It was these guardian angels (守护天使) who, despite the possibility of getting infected themselves, were risking their life so that the rest of us could be safe. Among them was my father. He’s protecting the people, me included.

Para 1: Then came bad news that my father was ill at hospital.

Para 2: Weeks later, my father came back home healthy .

Whether through advertisements, news articles or social media posts, most of us by now have started hearing about the upcoming data network of the future. What is 5G?

1. To help all of us understand them, we have listed some facts everyone should know.

● First, what is 5G?

5G is the 5th generation network. It is a new global network after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G, which can connect everyone and everything together. 2. With 5G there is a possibility that we can do everything.

3.

Self-driving cars, which will depend on ultra-fast data transmission speeds to communicate with other cars as well as their surroundings, promise a safer transportation system if and when technology is fully realized.

●5G will change the way we work or study.

In the post-coronavirus world, having remote working capabilities will be more important than ever. Video meeting, e-learning and other Internet-enabled work applications will be possible to the point where people can use them as easily in their home or on the road as in the office or classroom. 4.

●5G will change society in too many ways.

The use-cases and applications widely talked about are only a part of what 5G will make possible. Just as in the early days of the Internet in the 1990s, few foresaw the rise of useful websites like Wikipedia, org. The same will surely be true of 5G.

With 5G, other technologies don't seem like a dream anymore. 5. Now say goodbye to 4G in your homes and be prepared for the new wave of 5G.

A.Self-driving will grow popular.

B.5G will help make self-driving cars a reality.

C.The computer game players can have a faster speed.

D.Why does 5G matter so much in people's daily life?

E.The power to do anything we want will be at our fingertips.

F.5G means faster data speeds and ultra-low latency (超低延迟).

G.It will be also easier for doctors to treat patients remotely by 5G.

Two years ago this month, a 19-year-old American shot and killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Fourteen of the victims were students the other three were teachers. The gunman was a former student at the high school.

On this anniversary, as with other anniversaries of school shootings, Americans continue debating how to make sure students are safe in schools.

To increase preparedness for such an event, many schools now hold shooter drills for students and their teachers. A report released by Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization, notes the possible harmful effects of such exercises. It urges school administrators to look for better ways to make schools safe and to prepare children for an active shooter.

One problem with the way schools carry out shooter drills is how much they frighten students. When a school fails to inform parents and students about plans for a drill, the children may think that the attack is real. In some communities, the report says, schools deploy individuals who are told to act like “masked gunmen”. Students as young as three or four years old may be told to stay quiet in a small space for a long period of time. Experts on mental health say these experiences can have both short- and long-term effects on how well the children behave in school, as well as on their physical and mental health.

Melissa Reeves, former president of the National Association of School Psychologists, said the drills may “trigger either past trauma or trigger such a similar reaction that it actually ends up scaring the individuals instead of better preparing them to respond in these kinds of situations.”

In 2007, one study found it better to prepare students for an “intruder”, rather than a shooter. Another study noted the value of announcing drills in advance and following them with discussion. Students in that situation felt better prepared to handle possible violence.

1.What is the problem with the shooter drills?

A.Students only suffer short-term damage.

B.Students' physical health cannot be affected.

C.Students may think they are real and get scared.

D.Too young children may not understand what is happening.

2.What does "trigger" in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?

A.Limit. B.Cause. C.Reduce. D.Regulate.

3.What is Melissa Reeves' attitude toward the shooter drills?

A.Critical. B.Favorable. C.Indifferent. D.Unclear.

4.How can students be better prepared to handle possible shooter drills?

A.The schools give them a surprise.

B.They only prepare for shooters.

C.The masked “attacker” carries a toy gun.

D.Drills are announced beforehand and discussed afterwards.

This new packaging material looks like conventional plastic, but it's actually made from fish waste and algae(海藻)--and unlike plastic, if it escapes into the ocean, a fish could likely eat it safely. The material, called MarinaTex, is the winner of this year's James Dyson Award.

"It began with my desire to work with waste," says Lucy Hughes, a recent graduate from University of Sussex, who once visited a fish processing factory to see the massive quantity of waste generated by the industry and find new ways to use it. She focused on fish skins and scales (鳞片). "When I had it in my hands, I realized this has got potential, she says. "It's super strong and flexible." Hughes spent months experimenting with fish waste in her kitchen, running more than 100 experiments to find a binder and a process that could hold together the proteins in the fish skins and scales. "I had a lot of failed attempts—a lot of things either were too easily broken or too soft or easily went bad," she says. She finally landed on a type of algae that can be locally got.

The material can be used to replace oil-based plastic in packaging such as bags or the half transparent windows used to show products in boxes. As her research continues, Hughes says that she'll be studying how MarinaTex works and how long it could be used to store food.

Unlike some "compostable" plastics, which need to be processed in an industrial composting facility to break down, the new material can break down in four to six weeks in a backyard compost bin. ''All the ingredients are food-grade safe," Hughes says." So, this breaks down much like a piece of food would break down."

1.Why did Hughes develop MarinaTex?

A.She wanted to look for a new plastic.

B.She would like fish to eat it safely.

C.She wanted to win James Dyson Award.

D.She wanted to make use of fish skins and scales.

2.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The fish processing factory. B.The fish waste.

C.Fish scales. D.Fish skins.

3.What is the main advantage of MarinaTex compared with conventional plastic?

A.It is stronger and more flexible.

B.It can be used as plastic bags.

C.It has the nutritional value for fish.

D.It can break down very easily and fast.

4.Which one is the best title for the passage?

A.Working with Waste B.Developing New Ideas

C.Making Bags from Fish Waste D.Getting Rid of Plastic Pollution

Rome is recognized across the globe for its classical artwork, but recently the city's street art has been drawing attention. While many urban artists stick to painting murals(壁画),one Italian sculptor is resisting the trend with his wonderful works made from an unusual material. Andrea Gandini, a native of Rome in his early twenties, has been recognized for his wood carvings of old tree trunks scattered across the city's landscape.

Gandini's Trocomorto, or "dead trunk" project, began in 2018, when the artist ran out of sculpting clay. That's when he noticed the remains of an old tree stump in his neighborhood. He realized that Rome was full of potential canvases(画布)just waiting to be given a new life. "Bringing trees back to life" is exactly how Gandini and others describe his art.

Due to years of poor care by the city, many trees became diseased and had to be cut down. This resulted in lots of old stumps that degraded the streets of Rome, which were costly to remove. However, they have been a perfect canvas of Gandini, who has completed over 50 carvings across the city.

Gandini gives each old tree trunk a face and personality of its own. By recognizing each formerly living tree as individual, he hopes to give them some dignity in death and respect each of them with their own headstone of sorts. For those that can't make the trip to Rome, Gandini documents his works of art on Facebook.

Gandini's “dead trunk" project reminds us of what Auguste Rodin says, "There is no lack of beauty in the world, but a lack of eyes to find it." All is beautiful in the eyes of the artist, for his keen eye sees through the heart of all living things. To discover its character is to pierce its outer form and touch its inner truth. This "truth" is also "beauty".

1.What has drawn people's attention recently in Rome according to the passage?

A.Its classical artwork. B.Its traditional murals.

C.Its street wood carvings. D.Its unusual material.

2.Which statement is NOT correct about Gandini's works?

A.They are full of life. B.They follow the trend of murals.

C.They beautify the city. D.They are appreciated by some artists.

3.What does Gandini try to put in his works?

A.Dignity and respect. B.Beauty and kindness.

C.Hope and personality. D.Death and art.

4.What can we learn from this passage?

A.Beauty is always around for keen eyes.

B.Inner truth is difficult to find.

C.We live in a world lacking beauty.

D.Grandini is a person who loves nature and truth.

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled(颤颤巍巍)in high heels (高跟鞋) along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of..get out and walk.

It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.

The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next moment, the car door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.

I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 a.m., but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.

"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.

"Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place."

"No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.

Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.

At 2:15 a.m. lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.

US student Ariana Levin, 15, has an unusual way of memorizing speeches: She turns the words into lyrics and sings them.

Then she delivers her speech to the local Gavel Club, which launched (成立) this year to help teenagers to practice public speaking.

“I’m very passionate about music,” says Levin, a sophomore (高二学生) at Walt Whitman High School. So forgetting a speech isn’t her main concern. “My main thing is stuttering (口吃),” she says.

But monthly rehearsals (彩排), presentations and competitions have taught her to take a moment to pause, she says. In that way, she avoids “ums” or “uhs”, which are noted by a club member given the task.

Gavel Clubs are a new initiative (方案) of the Jack and Jill organization in the US. The organization provides opportunities such as leadership development, financial literacy (素养) and volunteer service for kids aged between 2 and 19 years.

“We do group activities to build our character and get us ready for the outside world,” says Chandler Perry, 17, a senior at Friends Academy in New York.

“It’s important for children to be able to enjoy public speaking,” says Mondi Kumbula-Fraser, the Eastern regional director overseeing (监督) 59 Jack and Jill chapters (分部). They’ll use the skill in college and job interviews, she says.

The students gain confidence in an “open and caring environment,” says Mecca Baker, a mother of twin daughters.

On March 10, Perry took part in a competition held by the local chapter.

For her speech, Perry talked about pets and what they do for their owners. “The toughest part was the first time I had to get up on the stage,” Perry says. “I told myself this is only three minutes of my life and I only have three minutes to be the best I can be. I feel like this could help me in my future.”

Taylor Fernandez, of North Babylon, says that he puts on a suit and tie to give his speeches and that he’s learned to project (投射) his voice and to move around the stage to emphasize (强调) what he has to say.

A foreign degree was once believed to be a sure path to a well-paid job. However, more and more graduates have found that this is not necessarily true.

The number of Chinese studying abroad grew at a slower rate in 2018 compared with 2017, according to a recent report released by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, 662,100 Chinese went abroad to study, up 8.83 percent from a year earlier, while the growth rate was 11.7 percent in 2017.

A major reason for the slower growth is that more and more students have realized that overseas study does not necessarily guarantee a well-paid job, reported China Daily.

According to a 2018 report by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), about a third of graduate returnees to China earn less than 6,000 yuan a month, while 25 percent make between 6,000 and 8,000 yuan a month.

For example, Lucy Liu, a woman from Beijing, was disappointed after being interviewed by a famous film studio in Beijing. She had just finished her postgraduate (研究生) studies in documentary production at New York University in the United States.

“The pay would be 150,000 yuan for one documentary, and at best I could finish one documentary a year,” Liu told South China Morning Post.

“After spending so much on my studies, I couldn’t accept that pay,” said Liu. She spent about 1 million yuan in tuition and living expenses while studying abroad.

Worse still, it takes over four months for over 50 percent of returned students to land a job, and only 20 percent get job offers before graduation, according to Qi Bin, from Haiwei Career Services, a company that specializes in employment for returnees.

Two major reasons are that they often miss the main job-seeking season while they’re abroad and they lack internship experience, Qi told China Daily.

However, this doesn’t mean studying overseas is useless.

On the contrary, it may provide students with good language and communication skills, an independent character and a global mindset, which are important for their career development, according to Qi.

“Studying overseas cannot guarantee everything, but foreign-educated students have great potential, and at some point their break will come,” Li Qing, a researcher from CCG, told the South China Morning Post.

1.What does the report by the Ministry of Education tell us?

A.Fewer students returned to China after studying overseas in 2018.

B.The growth of Chinese students studying abroad slowed in 2018.

C.Fewer Chinese students went to foreign universities in 2018.

D.More Chinese students found good jobs after studying abroad in 2018.

2.The example of Lucy Liu proves mainly that ______.

A.an overseas degree doesn’t guarantee a good salary

B.the cost of studying abroad is too great for an ordinary family

C.foreign-educated students earn less than those who studied at home

D.it takes a long time to produce a good documentary

3.What does Qi Bin think of studying abroad?

A.It is a waste of students’ time and money.

B.It gives students better internship chances.

C.It limits the possibility of students’ getting jobs that interest them.

D.It provides students with useful skills for their career development.

4.How does Li Qing feel about the future of foreign-educated students?

A.Worried. B.Unsure. C.Positive. D.Challenged.

However exciting space travel sounds, astronauts must still suffer with bad food. Now, food in space has to be dehydrated ( 使 ) or pre-cooked and stored. This means astronauts aren’t really eating fresh food.

New technology may change this. Scientific American reports that a specially-designed oven will be sent into space this autumn with NASA’s NG-12 cargo (货物) mission (太空飞行任务).

Far from the common vacuum-packed (真空包装的) meals, astronauts may get to enjoy freshly baked cookies before the end of 2019.

Why aren’t they baking cookies in space already? For one thing, there’s the risk of a fire. Engineers also have to overcome the challenge of microgravity ( ), which prevents heat from circling inside ovens the same way it does on Earth.

Astronauts will still have to wait a while before they can have their cookies, though. After baking, the results will be sent back to Earth for safety testing. If successful, this will be the first oven to bake food in space.

“I believe ... that will be game-changing for both science and astronauts,” food technology researcher Maeena Naman Shafiee told Scientific American.

One of the main driving forces behind this project has been NASA’s 2018 research into the effects of “confinement (封闭) and isolation (隔离)”. Unlike on the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts traveling out of Earth’s orbit (轨道) may not be able to speak to their loved ones on future missions, which could lead to negative feelings.

It’s hoped that the chance to bake and sense familiar smells can bring joy to crews (宇航人员).

“Is the ISS going to smell like fresh-baked cookies? We don’t know,” said NanoRacks’ communications manager Abby Dickes. “But that’s a feeling we all know and love ... that will make someone feel at home.”

Baking cookies in space would mark an important step, offering a small comfort in the difficult and unfamiliar environment of space travel. Astronauts have already grown plants aboard the ISS.

With commercial ( ) space travel now being planned, who knows what other developments may surprise us in the future?

1.What can the new technology help astronauts to do in space?

A.Enjoy fresh cookies.

B.Store more food.

2.Why is it difficult to bake cookies in space?

A.It’s difficult and costly to send food into space.

B.Microgravity stops food from staying in one place.

C.Baking cookies in space would pollute the spaceships.

D.It is hard to heat food properly because of microgravity.

3.What was the main purpose of the cookie project?

A.To improve astronauts’ health.

B.To make improvements in space travel.

C.To encourage more people to travel to space.

I am the shared bike. I’d like to be on the street to serve for people. They can ride me just via a mobile app. But horrible things happen a few days ago. Several people stole some of us with paying their bills on the app but treated us badly. They broke my saddle and even threw my friends everywhere. We felt angry for which those bad guys had done. Thanks to some kindly people, we received careful “treatment”. Now, you help as well as the whole society’s attention is what we need most. We are designed to help people who are stuck the heavy traffic. We are neither toy nor private vehicles. Please obey the basic rules.
