Some 15 years after that garden party, and five years since he'd been set free from prison for possession of drugs in his car, I came across Robert in a fancy restaurant. I was ______ to respect people's privacy and never ______ someone having a meal. But on this clay, I decided to ______ the code.

“I don't have any ______ if you remember this. . . "and I told him the story. “I just wanted to tell you that it was simply the kindest act I've ever ______ .”

What do you order when you go to a Chinese restaurant? Do you start with an appetizer of fried dumplings and then move onto General Tso's chicken? 1.

Tofu is made from soybeans(黄豆).There are different types of tofu, from soft creamy silken tofu to pressed extra firm tofu. The difference is the amount of water in them. The longer the tofu is pressed, the more water is squeezed out and the tofu becomes denser(更密实)and chewier.

2. In the letter to his friend John Bartram, Franklin cites(引用)a description of a type of Chinese cheese made from soybeans called "teu-fu” by Fernandez Navarette who published accounts of his travels to China in the late 1600's.

However, there isn't much documentation of tofu production in the United States. 3.

In 1917, as part of an effort to develop new sources of protein for American soldiers during World War I, the United States Department of Agriculture sent Chinese-born doctor Yamei Kin a dietitian well-known for promoting tofu as an nutritious meat alternative, to China to study soybeans 4.

It wasn't until the 1970's that tofu started to become better known, during a wave of interest in vegetarianism(素食主义),natural food, and less wasteful food sources. 5. And the restaurant. chain Chipotle successfully added tofu to its menu a few years ago.

A.Americans are not big consumers of tofu.

B.Let's take a look at tofu and its history in the United States.

C.Or do you start with deep-fried tofu and then choose Ma Po tofu instead?

D.Today, you can buy different types of tofu in many American supermarkets.

E.Despite the government's efforts, interest among the American public never picked up.

F.One of the earliest references to tofu by an American is in a letter by Benjamin Franklin.

G.It is likely that by the early 1900's, cities with large Asian populations had small tofu shops.

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar that appears on the student’s desktop, or smartphone screen, when ordered to come.

The autonomous animation platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach Vector’s “Be sustainable with energy”— a free program for Auckland elementary schools.

Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’ responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal cues. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way interaction not only helps attract the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their engagement, and make changes if needed.

Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver cost-effective, rich, educational experience in the future.”

The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “ What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon.

1.What was special for some elementary school students in Auckland?

A. A digital teacher taught them.

B. They first saw something digital.

C. This was the start of a new school year.

D. They could get close to smartphone screen.

2.What is the benefit of this two-way interaction?

A. It can smile back. B. It can use microphone.

C. It can talk any topic for free. D. It can change if necessary.

3.What’s Ravishankar’s attitude to Will’s replacing Human educators soon?

A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful.

C. Unclear. D. Disapproving.

4.What might be the best title for the passage?

A. New High-tech Contributes to Education

B. The World’s First Digital Teacher Appears in Classroom.

C. The World’s First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students

D. New Zealand Will Replace Teachers in Classrooms

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.

During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.

I spent over one hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.

When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”

Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:

Dear Rick,

My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live anymore. But I still smile as much as I can.

I told you someday I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.

Yours,

Matthew

American magician David Blaine left the glass box in which he had lived for 44 days without food on October 19. Hundreds of people came to watch the end of his starvation experiment, which had become one of London’s main tourist attractions.

Looking thinner and darker, 30 year-old Blaine was taken out of his box over the River Thames and immediately sent to hospital. He was then slowly reintroduced to food, a process doctors said could be life threatening. He had been drinking only water since September 5.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Blaine first became known as a street magician in the early 1990s. He soon found himself doing magic tricks in bars for the likes of American actor Leonardo DiCaprio and his super model friends.

If you’re worried about getting a seat, park your picnic at the El Dorado Beaches before 9:45 p.m. Or you can take the road less traveled and hike to the top of Mount Tallac for an unforgettable and best view of the display. Just remember you’ll have to hike down, so bring a headlight.

Launched from the beach south of Rehoboth Avenue, these fireworks are visible up and down the boardwalk and beach. So jump on the Jolly Trolley(观光车) early and spend your whole day at the beach. I'd like to share with you my progresses on study these three years. To be honest, I was not so good at my study when I came to high school, often feel tired out and at loss. Sometimes, I was even on the point of giving up. Therefore , things began to change when my teachers and my classmates came to encourage myself one day in Grade Two. It was for their encouragement and my own thinking that resulted in my achievements in study final.

Though I am still not a top student now I have found myself filled with greatly confidence to face any difficult and challenge. There is no doubt that I am bound to fighting for my dream to the end in the coming months!

The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its spire (尖顶) and a large portion of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible destruction causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world. “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.”

But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely through a video game called Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. Further, with virtual reality technology, which is already quite mature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage.

The idea of making digital models of ancient buildings to save their data dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with multiple images, as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one.

As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital model has great useful value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics.

Of course, however precise a model is, it is not the original. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment.

1.What can we see about Notre Dame in the game?

A.The damaged Notre Dame. B.Its wooden shape.

C.The big fire. D.Its original look.

2.What will engineers do to create a digital copy of the ancient buildings?

A.Build 3D models of full size. B.Scan the photos of the buildings

C.Measure all the parts exactly. D.Improve the technology needed.

3.How does the author prove the digital copy has vital practical importance?

A.By giving examples. B.By classification.

C.By comparison. D.By listing data.

4.What is the author’s attitude towards the application of the technology?

A.Delighted B.Supportive

C.Doubtful D.Conservative

When Sally Millsopp, 53, with her 17-year-old daughter, Eleanor, participated in Race for Life in 2019. She had no idea if she would get to see her mother Jennifer Earnshaw again, who was desperately ill with a form of lung cancer, but she encouraged the pair to take part in the event as she knew the fundraising would help others.

Check out our tsunami (海啸) facts and lean some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.

Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.

As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, the water may be pulled back hundreds of meters. If you are in the area, observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.

Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate (撤离) as possible.

When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast), they slow down but increase in height.

An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200, 000 people in 14 countries.

In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15, 000 people.

The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres (131feet) in mine areas, wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.

The Japanese word “tsunami” literally means “harbour wave”.

Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.

1.Which of the following shows a tsunami is coming soon?

A. An earthquake takes place.

B. The water marches towards the coast.

C. The water near the shore is pulled back.

D. The water near the shore is very shallow.

2.In the Tohoku earthquake, over 15,000 people died mainly because of ________.

A. the earthquake itself

B. the lack of warming systems

C. the tsunami caused by the earthquake

D. the nuclear accidents caused by the tsunami

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. The word “tsunami” is from British English.

Nowadays, the great number of people, especially young people, like ordering meals online. It’s not surprised. First, as the pace of modern life is becoming faster and faster, people had less time to cook even one meal for themselves. Second, the development of technology brings us smart phones and new apps, what may lead to the increase in online service. However, we should pay more attention to food. As we all know it, our health is closely related to what we eat. Although the service provides us convenience, we must take the food safety into considerate. Home-made food is cleaner and healthy, but I prefer to cook food at home rather than ordering meals online.

How to take notes

Every student knows the importance of taking notes in class. 1. Adults (成年人) need to take notes in meetings or training courses for work. So here are some ways to help you develop this important skill.

♦ Begin with the date and the topic of the class. This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget. 2.

♦ Focus on the most important points. Trying to write down everything the speaker says will only make you angry. 3.

♦ If the speaker uses a PowerPoint, you may not need to copy the slides. Ask if the PowerPoint will be available afterward. If so, you can focus on writing the things the speaker says instead. Or you can take a picture with a phone. 4. If so, print it out so you can write notes on it.

5. This will give you the chance to add any information that you didn’t write down. It’s best to do this as soon as possible, so that you don’t forget anything. This review will also increase your chances of remembering what you wrote.

Note-taking is a useful skill, so it’s important to practice doing it well.

A.Also, the PowerPoint may be available before the class or meeting.

B.Look over your notes again after taking them.

C.It will help you keep your notes organized.

D.Try your best to write down what you want to remember.

E.But the skill of note-taking isn’t only used in school.

F.Consider different note-taking skills.

G.Instead, listen for the key ideas the person wants to communicate.

People have been told to stay separated — at least six feet apart— and to practice what state and local officials call “social distancing”. Some have been asked to work at home. But as people try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, the resulting chaos and fear are bringing both large and small communities closer.

Simple acts of kindness are sprouting up online and in public, as neighbors, students, teachers, and others begin to connect those who can pass this long and isolating time smoothly, and the people who may not have the means to get through.

For Jesse Farren-James, helping out has taken the form of organizing trips to the supermarkets for supplies, and use of her membership card if anyone needs to buy large quantities. She posted the offer in a Facebook group for the community residents(居民), and some people came and turned to her. “I just feel so lucky that I have so many people in my life to rely on and so sad that not everyone has that,” she wrote in the group. In another interview, Farren-James said the “community is coming together" and “there are so many good and amazing people” offering to help where they can.

Also, parents in Dorchester have gathered together online. In a Facebook group called DotParents, parents have been raising money to buy food and supplies for students and families in the community. Lisa Graustein has been organizing this activity. On Thursday, she used the more than $2,000 raised by neighbors to purchase food in a restaurant supply company. A group of volunteers packed the food and planned to distribute to schools for those who may need it.

“Food shortage is real in our city and this crisis is going to be severe.” Graustein said. “But here’s something we can do that deal better with the hard time”. This idea   is spreading. She said friends in four other states had being running similar campaigns.

Next, she wants to find a way to get landlords(房东)to temporarily abandon rent for residents in financial difficulties because of the outbreak.

1.What do we know about Jesse Farren-James?

A.She is a shopping assistant working for a supermarket.

B.She is wealthy and always ready to help others.

C.She lent her membership card to the people in need.

D.She felt sad that not everyone has enough food.

2.The underlined phrase in paragraph 2 “sprouting up” can be best replaced by ______.

A.disappearing B.growing

C.connecting D.helping

3.What did parents in Dorchester do to offer help?

A.They bought food from the supermarket for community children.

B.They set up a restaurant supply company to provide food.

C.They raised money to deal with food shortage.

D.They distributed money to community residents.

4.Which is the best title for this passage?

D.Helping each other in financial difficulties

Dear Alcohol,

You’ve been around forever. I can remember all the pain you’ve caused me.

Do you remember the night when you almost took my father’s life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He’s addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went turning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn’t the only one badly hurt by you that night.

Do you remember the night of my first high school party? My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen head over heels for you. “I’m so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could throw up. “I’m sorry,” they said when I called taxis for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won’t happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night due to you.

Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lesson? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car head-on and killed two people in the other car? He died the next morning, too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn’t realize her brother was among them at all. She never saw him again. And it was all your fault.

I wish you’d walk out of my life forever. I don’t want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you’ve caused. Sure, you’ve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you’ve caused in the lives of millions is not excusable. Stop attracting the people I love! Stop hurting me, please!

Sincerely,

Me

I absolutely love Bark magazine! I love the “smiling” pages and the tips on every issue. Don't waste your money on this magazine. 60-70 percent of it are advertisements, and the articles offer little useful information. It might be suitable for children, but not adults who are serious about educating themselves about dogs.

How are you? I am just writing to tell you I had wonderful time at your place in New York.
