TIANJIN, Dec.12, 2018 (Xinhua)—Striking Chinese gongs() for 50 years, Liu Zibin, a 70-year-old folk artist in Tianjin Municipality, is eager to introduce the traditional musical instrument used in Chinese opera to more people.

Liu became addicted to Chinese opera in his childhood when his grandfather frequently took him to watch performances. At the age of 13, he joined Hebei bangzi training team. Hebei bangzi is one of the oldest types of Chinese opera in northern China, which became popular in the Qing Dynasty. It is a traditional Chinese opera combining music, vocals, dance and acrobatics(杂技).

“It took me hours to practice the basic skills of gongs,” he said. “This round piece of metal can help performers on the stage to express joy and sorrow when hit by a stick with different rhythms, so I must bear in mind all kinds of rhythms(节奏) for various situations. For example, striking gongs with a quick tempo(速度) can create a tense atmosphere for action scenes.”

In the 1960s and 1970s, the reorganization of opera troupes in Tianjin forced many members to switch their jobs to those in factories. Thanks to Liu’s brilliant skills, he was fortunate enough to go to one of the three biggest Beijing Opera troupes in Tianjin to continue his gong life.

Ten years ago, Liu retired, but he still goes to an opera tea house almost every afternoon to strike the gong for opera performances. In 2006, Hebei bangzi was listed into China’s national intangible cultural heritage. However, he worries about maintaining the art as fewer and fewer youngsters are learning percussion(敲打乐器), especially gongs. “People who strike the gong stay behind the scenes. It is hard for them to gain fame and fortune,” he said. Although many amateurs(业余爱好者) have learned from Liu over the years, some gave up easily. “It’s a bit dull and boring to continuously strike a gong for 40 minutes at the practice stage. It requires patience. Few can bear the hardship,” he said.

Various kinds of Chinese gongs are neatly placed at Liu’s home. He is waiting for more people to take over his career and spread the traditional Chinese art.

1.What can we know about Liu Zibin from the 2nd paragraph?

A.His grandfather founded Hebei Opera Troupe.

B.He showed interest in Chinese opera as a child.

C.He was the only one who could strike gongs in the troupe.

D.His grandfather taught him to sing Hebei bangzi.

2.Why did some members of the opera troupes turn to factories in the 1960s and 1970s?

A.Because of the reform of the opera troupes.

B.Because no one showed interest in opera then.

C.Because they could earn more money in factories.

D.Because the opera troupe was badly lacking in funds.

3.How old was Liu Zibin when he retired?

A.55 years old. B.60 years old.

C.65 years old. D.70 years old.

4.What can we conclude from the text?

A.People striking the gong will never become famous.

B.Grasping the skill of striking the gong is anything but challenging.

C.Liu expects the traditional Chinese art will draw more people’s attention.

D.Hebei bangzi is now the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

NextFest is an unusual exhibition where you can meet the most creative minds and discover new technology from around the world and see the things that will change the way we live, work and play in the future. For example,......

Brainball is a computer game with a difference: if you’re too competitive, you'll lose. The more relaxed you are, the better you play. Brainball measures your brainwaves and the person who is the most relaxed can push the ball to the other side and win. I’m sure it will be a popular game with yoga teachers and nervous parents everywhere.

If you’re interested in fashion, NexlFest can show you the clothes of the future—cloth which you can change by downloading styles from the web, clothes which look after your health and a biometric(生物测量的) suit which watches over your body and gives you medicine when you need it.

Another hit is a humanoid(类人的) robot which can walk, turn, climb up and down stairs—and even dance. Asimo copies human movement and is friendly-looking. Its maker, Honda, believes it will be a big help to blind or elderly people and to those who can’t get out of bed.

The Skyear looks as if it could only appear in a Hollywood film. It certainly lives up to its name: it can fly. It can climb at more than 2.000 metres a minute and reach a speed of 365 mph. If you want one, it will cost you about $500,000!

If you want to see the future, come to NexiFest. It’s open all this whole week at the State Science Exhibition Centre.

1.What should you do if you want to win a game of Brainball?

A.Keep a cool head. B.Be strong enough.

C.Have a creative mind D.Be highly competitive.

2.What is Asimo designed to do?

A.Direct human movement. B.Look after human’s health.

One day, I played the chess with Father and I won the first round, said proudly: “Dad, you have to fight.” Father replied he will get back in the next round. The second round began and I launched a series of attacks, that caught my dad off guard and led to much falls. My heart leaped with the joy that he could win again. I thought victory was within my grasp, but I defeated instead. Dad explained that I should have taken a long-term view so that I could succeed eventually. Father’s words made me comprehended a principle that we students should look forward to the future. More important, we should be good at seizing opportunities, making plan, and moving forward to the goal.

At the Virginia Convention in 1775, Patrick Henry gives a superb speech to inspire a revolution against Great Britain in which he uses various rhetorical (修辞的) devices to urge the President to take up arms against the oppressive British.

Henry uses rhetorical questions (反问句) to make everyone at the convention start to think about a war against Britain. For example, Henry says “And what have we to oppose to them?” to make people think that there is no other option except war if the colonists want freedom and justice from Britain. He is not looking for an actual answer back, but by making the people come up with the answer themselves, they can see the true necessity of a revolution. Then Henry asks his audience “But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house?” Henry is explaining that waiting and debating on the topic of war does not do any good. Instead, the colonies must move immediately.

Additionally, Patrick Henry uses the technique of restatement. Throughout his speech, Henry constantly restates that there is no time left, nor another option apart from war to separate from the British: “There is no longer any room for hope.” Restating the important conclusion stresses the importance of whatever the speaker is arguing, in this case, the colonists’ last resort of a revolution.

In the speech, Henry also uses pathos (悲情) to persuade the audience. He asks “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?” Henry indicates that slavery will be the outcome if the colonists do not take up arms and fight for freedom. By saying this, Henry uses pathos to strike at the hearts of the colonists to show that their freedom 13 worth the sacrifice and risk of death.

While the novel coronavirus is dangerous for everyone, it is particularly so for the first respond-ere who are being exposed to the illness daily. In the US alone, almost 5,500 nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals have been infected with COVID-19. Unfortunately, of these, dozens have succumbed to the disease. Now, hospital workers worldwide may get some relief thanks to Spot, a semi-autonomous four-legged robot developed by Waltham, Massachusetts-based robotics company, Boston Dynamics.

Starting in early March, Boston Dynamics started receiving inquiries from hospitals asking if our robots could help minimize their staff ’s exposure to COVID-19,” the company writes in a blog post. In response, the company reconfigured (改装)the 3-foot tall robot to operate as a mobile telemedicine platform, enabling healthcare providers to determine a patient’s condition remotely.

The first four-legged robotdog” was working in the Brigham and Womens Hospital of Harvard University on April 9, 2020. Equipped with an iPad “face” and a two-way radio that allows for real-time conversation, Spot helps doctors to speak to patients without coming in contact with them.

With current practice at local hospitals, patients suspected to have COVID-19 are asked to line up in tents outside to answer questions and get initial assessments for temperature. This process requires up to five medical staff, placing those individuals at high risk of being exposed to the virus,Boston Dynamics explains. With the use of a mobile robot, hospitals are able to reduce the number of necessary medical staff at the scene and conserve their limited PPE (personal protective equipment) supply.” The company says the doctors can even use Spot to talk to patients from the safety of their own homes.

Though Spot has already proved extremely helpful, the robotics manufacturer believes it can be even more so.     In 1972, Richard Sears, a young American from the state of Tennessee, began learning Chinese because of his fascination with traditional Chinese culture.

“Chinese characters are the only ancient script now still in use in the world and it’s a miracle of human history,” said Sears in fluent Chinese.

As a primitive form of Chinese characters and the oldest fully developed characters in China, Jiaguwen, or oracle bone inscriptions, were first discovered in 1899 and aimed for their inscriptions on tortoise shells and animal bones.

Drawn to the ancient language, Sears often went back and forth between China and the US. In 1994, he made a decision to make the ancient Chinese characters available online. Taking advantage of his professional skillSears started programming and building a database of oracle bone inscriptions on his own. It took him seven years just to scan the characters in Chinese ancient books. In 2002, the Jiaguwen enthusiast’s website was launched, though with only a few page views per day in the beginning. However, it surged to 600,000 per day in 2011 after a blogger recommended the site on Chinese social media platform Weibo. “I became a web celebrity overnight and was given a nickname ‘Uncle Hanzi’,” Sears said with a smile. Hanzi means Chinese characters.

During the past 26 years, he has accumulated a great deal of information on his website-more than 96,000 ancient Chinese character forms from archeological sources. Up till now, the web site has been continuously updated, giving lovers of the ancient language from all over the world free access to browse at their leisure. In order to reveal the mystery behind the ancient characters, he spent a great deal of money and time buying and going through dozens of books, living on a shoestring.

Since last year, Sears has been working with a Chinese technology company on a smartphone application for children to learn about how the characters evolved. The app is expected to be launched next year.

1.Which of the following is true of oracle bone inscriptions?

A.They used to spread to other countries in Europe.

B.It is over 100 years since they were first discovered.

C.They are the only ancient language still in use today.

2.What can we infer about Richard Sears?

A.He has a good command of the computer. B.He is promoting his website in the U. S. A.

C.He developed a smartphone app for adults. D.He has made a fortune from the website.

3.What happened to Sears’s website in 2011?

A.It was attacked by hackers. B.It declined gradually.

The day when we returned to school was impressive. Because the COVID-19 outbreak, we had to stay home during the three months’ “vacation”. I was touching when I stepped into the school, where remained clean and neat. The staff must have worked hard to keep everything tidy and safe but we could study in a comfortable environment. There were sign telling us to wash hands frequently and wearing masks. Mr. Chen, our headteacher, greeted us warm in the classroom. A mask was covered most of his face, but his eyes were shining. He said we had done his part to stop the disease spreading. What a unforgettable day!

Over the last few years, there’s been a trend to focus on gratitude. We can buy different kinds of gratitude journals, or download apps that remind us to write down our blessings.1.“But it's also important to remember that gratitude is free.”says Laurie Santos, who teaches a course on the science of well-being and happiness at Yale University.

Noting down gratitude seems to pay off. Studies have found that giving thanks can help people sleep better, lower stress and improve interpersonal relationships. Keeping a gratitude journal can decrease materialism and enhance generosity among adolescents.2.“It’s one practices that really wins out from the field of positive psychology.” she says. Her students, in addition to keeping gratitude journals, are asked to write a thank-you letter and then read it out loud to the recipient (收信人). “They show measurable improvements in well-being even a month after they’ve done this.”she says.

3.One study found that counting blessings once a week boosted happiness, but doing so three times a week didn't. There’s also a lack of research on bow gratitude exercises help people with clinical depression or anxiety. Indeed, for all the research on the broad benefits of expressing gratitude, it isn't for everyone.4. It can't make injustice, loss or pain disappear.

During really tough times, like when she suffers from poor health, Santos feels like she is reaching for reasons to be grateful. But she still tries to find some. “I’m grateful for the sun that’s shining or being able to wake up,” she says.5.

A.And it isn’t a cure-all.

B.So it doesn’t feel pleasant.

C.Those products remind us to take time to be grateful.

D.What works for some people may not work for others.

E.Gratitude allows her to remember what is going well.

F.Practicing too much gratitude may have undesired effects.

G.That's why gratitude features heavily in Santos' happiness class.

People often plan to receive medical exam but don’t, resulting in increasing health care cost. A surprising number of citizens mean to complete tax forms in time but forget to, forcing them to pay unnecessary fines. Many families miss the government deadline to complete financial aid forms, losing out on aid available for child care.

How can policymakers help people follow through on important tasks? They use carrots and sticks: bonuses, late fees, or regulations. These methods can be clumsy, and often aren’t effective for the situation at hand. Reminding people to form simple plans. however, provides a low-cost, simple, and powerful tool.

Evidence is growing that providing prompts, which push people at key times to think through how and when they will follow through, make people more likely to act on tasks of importance. In one early randomized study on tetanus vaccination rates, for example, a team of social psychologists showed that 28% of Oxford University seniors got the shot after being encouraged to review their weekly schedules and to select a possible time to stop by the health center. They were also given a list of times when shots were available and a map showing the health center’s location. Only 3% of the seniors got the shot when simply informed about how effective the shots were.

People who make a plan gain an advantage from their psychological forces. Specifically, they can overcome the tendency to put off as well as the tendency to be overly optimistic about the time it will take to accomplish a task. Imagine Sarah who wants to renew a car insurance, but it will require two hours of travel to and from a garage. Making a plan may lead her to lake two hours off and have her responsibilities covered by her colleagues while she is away. Moreover, she will be less likely to underestimate the time needed to accomplish the task—a particularly common problem for complex tasks.

People mistakenly believe that their strong intentions are enough to push them to perform desired behaviors. These psychological research results stress the need for policy decisions that encourage plan making and improve social welfare.

1.What phenomenon is described in paragraph 1?

A.Heavy burden of daily chores. B.Lack of task management skills.

C.Disappointment of over-ambitions. D.Failure to achieve original intentions.

2.What does the randomized tetanus vaccination study show?

A.People need to think deeply before they act.

B.Specific reminders help people accomplish plans.

C.Awareness of task significance matters in planning.

D.Seniors need encouragement to have vaccination shots.

3.What psychological benefit can people get from making a plan?

A.They are realistic in the time required. B.They are optimistic about the outcome.

C.They are confident to overcome hardship. D.They are careful with task arrangements.

4.Who may be the intended readers of this text?

A.Medical staff. B.Government officials.

C.Ordinary people. D.Social psychologists.

The terrible E1Niño strikes the globe every 2 to 7 years. As warm waters in the tropical(热带的) Pacific Ocean switch eastward and trade winds weaken the weather pattern stretches through the atmosphere, causing drought in southern Africa, wildfires in South America, and flooding on North America's Pacific coast. Climate scientists have struggled to predict El Niño events more than 1 year in advance, but artificial intelligence (AI) can now extend the latest forecasts to 18 months, according to a new study.

The new research uses a type of AI called a convolutional neural network(卷积神经网络), which is adept in recognizing images. Researchers feed the neural network a large number of training images and the AI becomes skilled at identifying fundamental patterns of those images. For example, the neural network can be trained to recognize cats in photos by identifying characteristics shared by all cats, such as hairs and four legs.

Part of the problem with earlier researches on El Niño forecasts is that they rely on a relatively small set of historical statistics for factors such as ocean temperature. To get around this shortage, the scientists fed the program re-creations of historic ocean conditions produced by a set of reliable climate models, ones frequently used for studies of climate change, says the study’s lead author, Yoo-Geun Ham, a climate scientist in South Korea. As a result, the scientists could show the computer system not just one set of actual historic data, lasting from 1871 to 1973, but several thousand reproductions of that same data by the climate models.

But it’s not clear how much real-world benefit will come from pushing forecasts beyond 1 year, cautions Stephen Zebiak, a climate scientist at Columbia University, “The kind of lead time that is actionable is probably less than a year because decision-makers are unlikely to take action further in advance,” he says.

1.What is the advantage of the latest AI forecasts?

A.Faster response. B.Higher accuracy

C.Wider application. D.Longer time range.

2.What does the underlined word “adept” probably mean?

A.Carefully-chosen. B.Well-trained.

C.Newly-developed. D.Wide-spread.

3.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Improvement on previous studies. B.Requirements for weather forecast.

C.Procedure for analyzing image data. D.Problems with early climate models.

4.What does Stephen Zebiak think of the new AI prediction?

A.It has unclear impacts. B.It calls for effective action.

C.It may not be of actual help. D.It should be treated with caution.

School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School, students are hard at work.In a garden bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting them for the weekend's farmers market. They work Tuesday through Saturday with City Blossoms, a non-profit that brings community gardens to schools and other places where kids gather in urban areas.

Roshawn Little, going into her junior year at Eastern, believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new thingslike eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she has taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her family now buy more fruits and vegetables.“We mainly live around liquor(酒)stores and snack stores. There aren’t that many grocery stores. They're way out, and you have to drive so far”a common problem in low-income urban areas.

City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to establish school gardens, like the one at Eastern. These gardens, advocates say, are really outdoor classrooms where kids learn valuable lessons not just about nutrition, but also about science and math, even business skills. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessonslike calculating the area of a plant bedor learning the science of how plants grow.

On a recent weekend at the Aya farmers market, the kids work at a table decorated with handmade signs that read “onions” and “garlic”, inviting people to try their herbed salt with bread. Working at the market helps them practice public speaking skills and business skills.

Nadine Joyner of a nutrition education company has a food table next to the kids at the market and often buys produce from them. She is constantly impressed by the kids’ knowledge of what they're sellingthey know how to grow it, how to prepare it, and how to cook it

1.What do students at Eastern do with the harvested vegetables?

A.Sell them on market . B.Take them to school.

C.Give them to farmers. D.Share them at home.

2.What can we infer about the area Little lives in?

A.It is inconvenient in traffic. B.It is crowded with grocery stores.

C.It has poor access to fresh foods. D.It suffers from income inequality.

3.Why does City Blossoms establish school gardens?

A.To provide nutritious food. B.To improve classroom conditions.

C.To cooperate with local community. D.To create outdoor learning chances.

4.Which may be the best title for this text?

A.Green Vegetables, Healthy Gardeners B.School Garden: a Promise Land in Summer

When it comes to the season I like best, spring will always strike to me in no time.  There are many reasons that I like spring best. One of the most romantic thing is to walk in a lightly rain in spring. What’s more, after a long cold winter, everything begin to come to life. But whenever there is a chance for me to go to the countryside, I will never hesitate to pack my bags and leave to the land. Finally, I adore spring because it is either too hot nor too cold.  In word, I like everything in spring, especially the sight of green trees bathing in the sunshine.

Everyone knows that death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two periods—clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the important organs, such as the heart or lungs, have stopped to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism (有机体) can still be revived. Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of important cells and tissues. Death is then unchangeable.

Scientists have been seeking a way to lengthen the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic (麻醉的) sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism (新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death.

To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery (动脉). The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous (自发的) breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe (注射器) and ran with it around the room. It showed that Keta had nothing different from any other healthy animal.

1.For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.

A.he can’t avoid final death

B.he is still very much alive

C.his most important organs are damaged

D.he still has the possibility of getting back to life

2.Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to ________.

A.cool the organism

B.slow down the body’s metabolism

C.delay the coming of biological death

D.bring important cells and tissues back to active life

3.How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?

A.By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.

B.By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.

C.By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood.

D.By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.

4.Which of the following indicates that Keta is a healthy animal after the experiment?

A.Her heart beat again.

B.She seized the syringe and ran away with it.

C.She regained her normal breath.

D.She opened her eyes and lifted her head.

Alibaba starts taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allows business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage isn’t hard to identify: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its marketplaces attract 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.

If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing almost a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it?” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.

Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail (零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices. What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially — in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.

I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

1.Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in _________.

A.its low price B.its big size

C.its not charging small sellers D.its business-to-business service

2.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the passage?

A.Alibaba will continue to develop.

B.Alibaba stands out as the best online site.

C.Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites.

D.Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers.

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao.

B.The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover.

C.Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.

D.Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more than retail now.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Shopping online is Taobao.

B.How the author purchases online in China.

C.Alibaba greatly influences people’s daily purchase in China.

D.The influence of shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.

March 25, 2020

Dear students and parents.

As our state continues to fight against the spread of COVID-19, the State Board of Education has voted to authorize the closure of all public schools in Oklahoma for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

Jenks Public Schools (JPS) will be transitioning to distance learning beginning April 6 through the end of the school year. All JPS school buildings and facilities will remain closed until further notice. All activities, athletic events, club meetings, school sponsored trips are canceled for the 2019-20 school year.

JPS administrators are working on plans for a district-wide distance learning program. Please be patient over the next week as these plans are finalized. As soon as more information is available, you will be notified.

The time being missed due to the coronavirus-related closure will not have to be made up. Summer will not be shortened and as of now, the start of the 2020-21 school year will not be delayed.

We recognize the disappointment and difficulty this closure is causing our students and families. Our thoughts go out to our senior class knowing they will not have the opportunity to walk across a graduation stage in front of their family, friends, and peers. Please be assured, we will find a way to honor our seniors and recognize their achievements.

None of this is easy but despite our distance, we are still one Trojan family. We will continue to love and support each other. We will always make decisions based on what is best for our students. Thank you for your trust. You will hear from us very soon.

Sincerely,

JPS Administration
