A lot of kids and adults say they get nervous during social situations. Maybe it’s speaking up in class or making a phone call or just trying something new. You might feel butterflies in your stomach, or your heart may beat faster or you get suddenly sweaty. 1. And if fear of being embarrassed or making a mistake is getting in your way, there are some things you can try on your own to help.

2.

Experts agree that avoiding situations that make us anxious can actually make things worse in the long run. Getting out of something you didn’t want to do might make you feel better in the moment, but you will still feel anxious the next time you’re asked to do it.

Push yourself.

While leaving your comfort zone isn’t easy, it can be very good for you. That’s because anxiety tends to go away when you start doing the things that make you anxious.3. You might find you have the skills to handle it. And next time you’re in that situation you might feel less self-conscious.

Practice a lot.

As an experiment, try doing something that makes you nervous.4. Whatever you do, you’ll find that it gets easier over time. That’s because by practicing the things that make you nervous you are actually improving your ability to easily handle them.

Relax yourself.

Instead of trying to relax by watching television or visiting a website, try a deep relaxation practice that has a physical effect on the mind.5.

A.Don’t avoid something.

B.Being nervous is uncommon.

C.Pay no attention to your original thoughts.

D.Those things are your body’s reaction to fear.

E.Start with little things like answering questions in class.

F.So try to face your anxiety and fear and see what happens.

G.For example, doing things like yoga can also help you stay calm.

Your colleague’s sharp comment keeps replaying in your mind. Two of your students are trapped in a “he said/she said” battle. When you reflect on your emotional reactions, you sometimes get caught up in cycles of negative feelings, which can make you feel even worse. If so, the answer may lie in a skill called “self-distancing”the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively. According to a research, when people adopt self-distancing while discussing a difficult event, they make better sense of their reactions, experience less emotional suffering, and display fewer signs of stress.

But what might self-distancing look like in action? Consider a typical “he said/she said” student conflict where they are each focusing on their own feelings. One is thinking“I can’t believe he did that to me.” And another insists, “She really hurt my feelings.” However, if you ask them to take the self-distancing, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions: “Why was he so hurt in this situation?” or “How did her anger affect him?”

Although this approach may sound too simple to be effective, studies indicate that a change in point of view can have a powerful effect on the way people think, feel, and behave. Here are several different techniques you can try.

Firstconsider how a thoughtful friend might respond after quietly observing their situation. Besides, avoid using the pronoun “I”. Focus on using third-person pronouns, he, she, they, and they were able to see the stressful event as challenging rather than threatening. Finally, ask yourself, “How would I feel about this one week from now or ten years from now?” This form of mental time travel may be effective because our attention is directed away from our immediate, concrete circumstances.

1.What is self-distancing?

A.Getting stuck in negative emotions. B.A stressful situation.

C.A study on relieving emotional stress. D.Reflecting on yourself objectively.

2.Paragraph 2 is developed by____.

A.example B.definition

C.classification D.process

3.Which of the following statement uses the techniques of self-distancing?

A.I’m angry with him.

B.How I wish I could go back to the past!

C.How did these two people get to this point?

D.He grabbed my notes, and then, and then...

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Why Self-distancing Matters

B.The Application of Self-distancing

C.Breaking the Cycle of Negative Reflection

D.Ways to Reflect on Emotional Reactions

Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy? In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.

The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire measuring their guilt-proneness(内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given $1, which they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to $2.50. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.

Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting(互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.

Then how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy? “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others.

1.What may make others feel that we are reliable according to the text?

A.Our good qualities to help them out.

B.Our tendency to experience guilt.

C.Our kind attitude towards them.

D.Our team spirit in the game.

2.What may connect guilt with trustworthy behavior?

A.A sense of responsibility.

B.A feeling of disappointment.

C.The way one interacts with others.

D.The ability to tell right from wrong.

3.What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Ask B.Express

C.Describe D.Determine

4.How is the text organized and developed?

A.By providing background.

B.By making a lot of comparisons.

C.By answering the raised questions.

D.By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.

From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others. Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we're brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.

Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇吼)or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty-four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.

No more angry shouts and no more horns!

When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can. And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.

Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t, pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.

1.People will feel happy, according to the author's findings, when __________.

A.they offer their help to others B.they receive others’ help

C.they feel others’ kindness to them D.they show their weakness to other people

2.Why does the author feel sad sometimes?

A.Because he has a soft heart, showing sympathy to others.

B.Because he is disabled and relies much on others.

C.Because some people pretend to be kind, but in fact they are not.

D.Because some people fail to see the kindness in others.

3.What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights?

A.They sped up to pass because they didn’t want to wait.

B.They stopped their cars to offer help.

C.hey put on their flashlights too.

D.They waited with patience.

4.In this passage, the author advises us to _________.

A.be independent of others and handle problems by ourselves

B.accept help from others for everything

C.admit our weakness

D.show our bravery

During the Spring Festival, my classmates and I visited the Nursing Home in our city. The elderly people here expressed their warm welcome for us arrival. We brought them some fruits and flower. Then we set out to cleaning the windows, sweep the floors, wash their clothes and so on. We all worked very hardly. After that, we sat down, chat with them happily. They told us many old interesting stories and we share some recent hot topics with them. Three hours had passed since we knew it. At end of our trip, they said we had made their day.

We all want to go somewhere — somewhere that has been on our bucket list ages.1. We often picture the scenes like four cities in seven days, “must-see’s” in Tokyofamous landmarks in Europe and so on. It’s as if the faster we’re checking things off our list, the more we are experiencing.

2. Traveler, the South Korean reality show, can perhaps give us some idea of what travel is like Traveler's travelers don't have a mission and there isn’t a competition for them to win.

Instead, it focuses on “depicting (描绘) the real experience of traveling by showing the processes of finding a place to stay or grabbing (拦下) a taxi”, according to The Korea Times. 3. It isn’t about getting or not getting somewhere as quickly as possible, but about simply being excited as you’re getting there or not getting there at all.

4. You may ignore the guidebook’s recommendation and ask local people where they prefer to eat and hang out. And you’ll be surprised by what a place has to offer when you’re not busy rushing around and checking things off your bucket list.

Travel is just like life. There is little fun in it if everything is predictable. 5. But as travel blog CheeseWeb puts it, as long as you keep an open mind, you’ll see that “everywhere is ‘somewhere”’.

A.It’s true that we all want to go “somewhere”.

B.But do you know what you are experiencing?

C.Why not stop rushing you off your feet and slow down?

D.This is actually the concept of what’s called “slow travel”.

E.So, we tend to squeeze as many sights into our trip as possible.

F.You may try to wander off the main road and take a back street instead.

G.However, concerning it’s probably not quantity that counts but quality.

In a classic episode (片段)of The Simpsons, Homer's class reunion ends in shame when one of Homer’s guilty secrets is exposed: he never graduated from high school. To get his diploma, he must pass a science test. As he sits down to retake the exam, he holds one of his trademark dialogues with his brain. “All rightbrain. You don’t like me and I don’t like you. But let’s just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.”

Many a true word is spoken as a joke. Homer Simpson’s Everyman character really is an Everyman. For most people, engaging in the kind of effortful thinking that is required to pass a science test feels too much like hard work. It is so much easier to quit and let the brain’s autopilot take over.

And no wonder. Evolution has blessed the human brain with all kinds of mental shortcuts that make life manageable. If we had to think about every action or weigh up every decision, we would break down. As a result, certain ideas and modes of thinking come naturally to us, such as effortless thinking.

But at huge cost. Our mental shortcuts work fine at the level of individuals and small-scale societies, but in an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, they are a danger to society. Effortless thinking is at the root of many of the modern world’s most serious problems: terrorismhatred, inequality and religious extremism. All are caused by people disengaging their critical thinking and going with their gut (非理性的)feeling.

Everybody is capable of gut feeling, but also of the critical thinking. Both thinking styles are needed to make the world go round. Unfortunately, the latter requires training that is unavailable or unappealing to many people.

One of the bright spots in 2017 was the start of a movement called the March For Science. Those who believe in the power of science need to keep on marching, or give more power to people who don’t much like their own brains — or other people’s.

1.What does the author want to convey through Homer's story?

A.Feeling is very important.

B.Drinking beer is harmful to one’s brain.

C.High school seniors should work hard.

D.Most people hate effortful thinking like Homer.

2.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.Our mental shortcuts function well.

B.Effortless thinking is expensive for people.

C.Effortless thinking is dangerous to society.

D.People prefer effortless thinking to critical thinking.

3.What does the author think of critical thinking?

A.It makes the world go round.

B.It needs necessary training.

C.It works fine at the level of personal affairs.

D.It leads to the March For Science in 2017.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.We Need to March Towards Science

B.Thinking Contributes to Social Problems

C.Effortless Thinking Is Out of Date

D.Critical Thinking Is Urgently Needed

More than half of UK species have suffered declines in recent years and 15 percent are at risk of vanishing (消失), a report has warned. There is little evidence to suggest the rate of loss is slowing down.

Farming is key to what is happening, with more intensive agriculture affecting nearly half of the species studied and responsible for nearly a quarter of the total impact on wildlife. A loss of mixed farms, changes to sowing patterns, increased use of pesticides and fertilizers and a loss of habitat (栖息地)have taken their toll. The report said government farming policies had led to dramatic changes in farming practices, almost doubling wheat and milk yields since the 1970s, but often at the expense of nature by interrupting the food sources and habitats species rely on.

Climate change is also increasingly affecting UK nature although the impacts are mixed with some species spreading north or surviving better in warmer winters, but others are hit by the loss of coastal habitat, increased sea temperature and wilder weather. In the long term, global warming poses one of the greatest threats to nature around the world. Wildlife is also being hit by urban development, loss of town green areas, changes to the way land and forests are managed and over-abstraction (过度抽取)of water.

“The natural world needs our help as never before,” said naturalist and TV presenter David Attenborough. “We must work together, governments, conservationists, businesses and individuals to help it.”

The good news is that the creation of new wetland by conservation programs and the planting of new woodland, as well as wildlife-friendly farming programs, are providing habitats for struggling species. Reintroduction of species such as the pine marten (松貂)and large blue butterflies is also helping, but more needs to be done, the report said.

1.What does the underlined phrase “taken their toll” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Cost much money. B.Had bad effects.

C.Changed farming policies. D.Interrupted the food sources.

2.What is the main cause of UK species decrease?

A.The development of agriculture.

B.The over-use of water.

C.The change of climate.

D.The loss of habitats.

3.What does the author intend to tell us in the last sentence?

A.More large blue butterflies are needed in UK.

B.More should be done for the diversity of species.

C.The report sounds the alarm for the UK’s wildlife.

D.Enough measures have been taken to protect the natural world.

4.Where is this text most likely from?

A.A poster. B.A brochure.

C.A magazine. D.A notice.

As an elementary school student in New York City, Robert Lee would stare in disbelief at his classmates throwing away half-eaten sandwiches after lunch. His Korean immigrant parents had taught him not to waste food.

While studying finance and accounting at New York University, Robert remembered this lesson all the time. When Robert and his friend Louisa Chen entered a college entrepreneurship (创业)contestthey proposed an idea for a food-rescue nonprofit group Their program would deliver leftovers from the dining hall to homeless shelters seven days a week all by volunteers. Their idea won the competition. With the $ 1,000 prize, they founded Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC) in July 2013. In just the first few weeks, Robert’s team delivered a donation of enough spaghetti and meatballs to feed 20 people at a New York City homeless shelter.

Robert, who had taken a job as an analyst at J. P. Morgan, devoted his spare time to creating a network of New York City restaurants, from small delis (熟食店)to large chains like Starbucks and Panera Bread, agreeing to donate food, and he enlisted volunteers to make food deliveries. After RLC received national press attention, homeless shelters and soup kitchens in Portland, Oregon, Washington, DC and other cities reached out to Robert for partnership advice. The organization now reaches 16 cities around the country.

Only a year into his finance job, Robert gave up his six-figure salary to focus on RLC. “I compared one hour of impact at J. P. Morgan to one hour at RLCand the difference was just tremendous,” he says. “One shelter told us that our donations allowed them to provide entire dinners for more than 300 people, three nights a week” Robert says. “Things like that make me gladly quit my job.”

1.How did Robert feel when his classmates threw away food?

A.Astonished. B.Embarrassed.

C.Disappointed. D.Interested.

2.What do we know about the RLC?

A.It won $ 1,000 prize.

B.It got supported by many restaurants.

C.It asked the homeless shelters for advice.

D.It has branches all over the world.

3.Why did Robert leave his job at J P Morgan?

A.One shelter spoke highly of him.

B.RLC offered him six-figure salary.

C.He could make a bigger difference in society.

D.The work at J. P. Morgan was not suitable for him.

4.Which of the following best describes Robert?

A.Confident. B.Modest.

C.Humorous. D.Selfless.

We live in the countryside. Most of which we see is the beauty of nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter some people throw out their windows as they are driving on the roads. One of the few drawbacks to living in the countryside is that public service, such as litter collection, are little available than they are closer to the city.

A helping habit that my family practise regularly are picking up litter in our surrounding area. We have become so accustomed to do this that my little brother will often say, “There’s some litter. Daddy, stop the car!” and we would often pull over and pick it up. It may seem strange, and we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live in. He smiled at me and said, “I saw you doing it, and it seemed like the good idea.”

Everyone knows conferences are great for interpersonal relationships. Conferences are all about meeting people and making friends. Of course, some of those new contacts may become customers for your company too, but don’t try to sell to them at the conference unless you really have to. 1..

The most difficult part of communication is always breaking the ice: 2.. We call it golden time. Actually, it can be incredibly tough to walk into a room full of people, all of whom seem to know each other and are involved in deep conversations. How on earth do you join in?

3.. It’s polite to introduce yourself and ask if you can join the group, but there’s nothing wrong with standing and listening for a few minutes first.

The worst thing to do is to walk around looking busy. This is like holding up a sign saying “Please don’t talk to me”. A much better solution, though, is to move slowly around the room, make eye contact with people, smile and say “ hello”. 4..

Sometimes, we’re our own worst enemies. 5.. However, when someone tries to engage us in conversation, we can’t wait to get away. If someone has made the effort to come up to you, they deserve at least five minutes of your time, no matter how boring that person seems. And if you’re lucky, perhaps more people will join your conversation group.

A.We feel bad when no one wants to talk to us.

B.The best thing to do is to try to get involved in one of the conversations.

C.Just be yourself, and allow any business partnerships to appear naturally.

D.Half the people in the group conversations are nervously trying to get involved.

E.The most important thing to remember is that most people are in the same position as you.

F.Starting a conversation with a stranger and keeping it going for the important five minutes.

G.That way, even if you’re too nervous to start a conversation, other people will understand it.

A black hole is created when a large star burns out. Like our sun, stars are unbelievably hot furnaces (熔炉) that burn their own matter as fuel. When most of the fuel is used up, the star begins to die.

The death of a star is not a quiet event. First, there is a huge explosion. As its outer layer is blasted off into space, the dying star shines as brightly as a billion suns.

After the explosion, gravity pulls in what’s left of the star. As the outside of the star sinks toward the center, the star gets smaller and smaller. The material the star is made of becomes tightly packed together. A star is so dense that a teaspoon of matter from it weighs billion of pounds.

The more the star shrinks, the stronger the gravity inside it becomes. Soon the star is very tiny, and the gravity pulling it in is unbelievably strong. In fact, the gravity is so strong that it even pulls light into the star! Since all the light is pulled in, none can flee. The star becomes black when there is no light. Then a black hole is born!

That’s what we know about black holes. What we don’t know is this: What happens inside a black hole after the star has been squeezed into a tiny ball? Does it keep getting smaller and smaller forever? Such a possibility is hard to imagine.

But if the black hole doesn’t keep shrinking, what happens to it? Some scientists think black holes are like doorways to another world. They say that as the star disappears from our universe, it goes into another universe. In other words, a black hole in our universe could turn into a “white hole” in a different universe. As the black hole swallows light, the white hole shines brightly — somewhere else. But where? A different place, perhaps, or a different time — many years in the past or future.

Could you travel through a black hole? Right now, no. Nothing we know of could go into a black hole without being crushed. So far the time being, black holes must remain a mystery.

Black holes are a mystery — but that hasn’t stopped scientists from dreaming about them. One scientist suggested that in the future we might make sure of the power of black holes. They would supply all of Earth’s energy needs, with plenty to spare. Another scientist wondered if a black hole could someday be used to swallow earthly waste — a sort of huge waste disposal in the sky!

1.What do we know about stars in the universe?

A.When a star begins to die, there’s no fuel left in it.

B.After the explosion, a star gets as small as a teaspoon.

C.A star explodes when it dies and then becomes smaller and smaller.

D.A star gets smaller and smaller because the outer layer of a star sinks toward the center.

2.Which of the following doesn’t help produce a black hole?

A.The dying star shines very brightly. B.The light can’t go out of the star.

C.The gravity inside the star is very strong. D.The star becomes very tiny and dense.

3.What can we know from the passage?

A.A star will blast and die when it lacks fuel to support its burning.

B.Man can never travel through a black hole but can make use of its power.

C.A black hole can swallow everything because it becomes smaller all the time.

D.Scientists have found that a black hole goes into another universe and becomes a white hole.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.A New Scientific Discovery: Black Holes B.How Do Black Holes Come into Being?

C.What Are Black Holes? D.Travel Through A Black Hole

Apple lost its status as the world’s only trillion-dollar public company as shares slumped (下跌) following disappointing results.

The iPhone maker said that it would no longer tell how many iPhones, iPads and Macs it sells each quarter, claiming the figure was no longer relevant to investors. The announcement, combined with a forecast for the vital Christmas quarter, sent shares falling by more than 7 percent in after-hours trading, knocking over $70 billion off its value. If maintained, the drop means Apple’s value has fallen below the trillion-dollar mark for the first time since it reached the milestone in August.

Apple’s fall come despite it posting record profits and sales after it convinced consumers to buy more expensive versions of the iPhone in the three months to the end of September. During this period, it sold 46. 9 million iPhones, flat on the same period last year and below what analysts had expected. However, a huge increase in the price of each phone meant that iPhone revenues (收益) increased by 29 percent. On average, consumers now pay $793 for each iPhone, up from $618 a year ago.

Apple has successfully pushed its users into paying more for newer versions of its iPhone by adding new features and bigger screen sizes, even as sales growth has decreased. Revenues in the quarter increased by 20 percent to $62.9 billion, while profits were up 32 percent to $14.1 billion. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said sales had been disappointing in some emerging markets such as India, Turkey and Brazil.

Apple sold fewer Mac computers and iPads than a year ago, but said revenues from its software division had increased by 17 percent. Apple said it would continue to say how much revenue it makes from each of its product lines, which it claimed was a more relevant figure than unit sales.

1.What did the iPhone maker’s announcement cause?

A.It caused a stable market. B.It caused a drop in sales.

C.It caused weaker shares. D.It caused an increase in sales.

2.How were the sales of iPhones in the three months to the end of September last year?

A.They were better than this year. B.They were the same with this year.

C.They were not reported to the public. D.They were more terrible than this year.

3.Why did the revenues increase as the shares slumped?

A.The price was increased. B.People supported iPhones.

C.The sales were beyond expectation. D.The iPhone maker started a promotion.

4.What is the situation of the sales in some emerging markets?

A.It has a big market. B.The unit sales are good.

C.It is not very well received. D.It is uneven according to places.

No one is happy about missing his/her bus. When Thomas Daniel missed his school bus last week, he met Officer Lynema. Lynema was with the Grand Rapids Police Department in Michigan early in the morning. He said that he saw the 9-year-old boy running after a school bus. Lynema asked Thomas if he wanted a ride to school, which the young boy gratefully accepted (after his mother nodded).

On the way to school, Thomas invited Lynema to his birthday party that evening. The boy also said that he was afraid that none of his classmates would show up for the party because he was often bullied in school.

When Lynema attended the party later in the day, he was heartbroken. He discovered that he and Thomas’s brothers and sisters were the only people who had shown up for the party — and the young boy didn’t even have a cake. The next day, Lynema called together other police officers and returned to Thomas’ house to throw him a second birthday party.

After Thomas got back from school, he was astounded to come home and find presents, a Krispy Kreme donut cake and a band waiting to surprise him. Thomas later said that it was the “best birthday ever”.

The police department posted photos of the boy and his new friends in the hope that it would encourage other people to take action against bullying. “No kid should get bullied, and no kid should worry if anyone will come to his/her birthday party,” wrote the police department Internet page. “Next year, Thomas Daniel, make sure you invite us a little earlier. We wouldn’t want to miss it!”

Missus Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. For a day or two she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement.

On the day she planned to go shopping with the money, she ate a light meal- no! Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all!

When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price a young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft, expensive items. Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly, “Well, I will buy this pair.”

Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies’ rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.

Anyone who has children has likely heard "I'm bored!" too many times. When you're on a budget, it can be tough to think of ways to entertain the family that don't cost a lot of money. 1.

Head to the library, and not just check out books. Look at the library's community events calendar. Most libraries have everything from story times for children to game nights for teens. 2.

Camp in a national forest or build a sandcastle. A lot of the sites are free to use, though they do lack facilities. 3. If there's no beach nearby, do the same in the sandbox at a playground.

4. Most cities have at least one local community center. There, you can pick up a park and recreation schedule, with information on free events taking place throughout the year, such as hikes, holiday parties, art festivals, outdoor movies and concerts in the park.

Tour the fire station. Most fire fighters will give you and your kids a free tour,as long as you call and schedule ahead of time. 5. For safety reasons, fire stations do not generally accommodate children under the age of four.

Check out a state park. Stop by the ranger station and ask about free programmes for kids, such as nature walks and hands-on science classes. Some parks have junior ranger badges(徽章)children can earn by completing conservation related activities.

A.Visit the local community center.

B.Go to the beach and build a sandcastle.

C.The time when children visit is very important.

D.Spend more time finding much free information.

E.Kids can learn about fire safety and tour the facilities.

F.Many libraries also have enrichment classes offered free of charge.

G.Fortunately, there are many options available to you if you know where to look.

Recently, a scientist did some experiments. He left a group of 4-year-olds in a room with a bell and a candy. If they rang the bell, he would come back and they could eat the candy. If, however, they didn’t ring the bell and waited for him to come back on his own, they could then have two candies.

In the videos of the experiments, he can see the children hiding their eyes, trying to exercise self-control so they can wait and get two candies. The results are different. Some broke down and rang the bell within a minute. Others lasted 15 minutes.

The children who waited longer went on to get higher academic scores. They got into better colleges and had better adult success. The children who rang the bell quickest were more likely to have received worse teacher and parental evaluations (评价) 10 years later and were more likely to have drug problems at age 32.

The experiments are worth noting because people spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve education, and how to become rich. But when the result is not good, they will come back to ask “How do we get people to get the sort of self-control that leads to success?” This is to enter the world of human nature.

So these experiments, along with everyday experience, tell us that self-control is most important. Young people who can sit through sometimes boring classes to get a degree can work hard in order to learn a language well. They can avoid drugs and alcohol. For people without self-control skills, however, school is a series of failed and painful experience. No wonder they drop out and their later life is a group of foolish ideas, such as drug use, stealing and so on.

1.The scientist did some experiments to ________.

A. find good ways of training children to learn

B. show that children’s education is important

C. test children’s self-control and later success

D. test children’s intelligence of ringing the bell

2.What do the underlined words “broke down” probably mean?

A. failed to wait. B. kept waiting.

C. hid the candy. D. ate the candy.

3.How long did the scientist’s experiments last according to the text?

A. Just 15 minutes. B. Within 10 years.

C. Less than 14 years. D. About 28 years.

4.What will the children without self-control do at school according to the text?

A. They will improve their education.

B. They will suffer a lot from boring lessons.

C. They will become very rich and successful.

D. They will work hard to catch up with others.

Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated (躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate.

In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university’s Writers’ Workshop, however, she felt lonely — a Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “creative voice”.

“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That’s when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldn’t write about.”

Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book talks about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school to graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books of poetry, a children’s book and a short-story collection.

1.What can we know about Cisneros in her childhood?

A.Her brothers disliked her.

B.She felt herself a nobody.

C.She was too shy to go to school.

D.She did not meet any good teachers.

2.The graduate program gave Cisneros a chance to ________.

A.run away from her family B.develop her writing style

C.make a lot of friends D.search for a husband

3.According to Cisneros, what was the key factor in her success?

A.Her childhood experience.

B.Her training in the Workshop.

C.Her feeling of being different.

D.Her early years in college.

4.What do we learn about The House on Mango Street?

A.It enjoys great popularity among students.

B.It is a book of poetry written by Cisneros.

C.It wasn’t a success as it was written in Spanish.

D.It won an award when Cisneros was twenty-nine.
