Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.

Scientific consensus (共识) suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激)from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true—so people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result.

Professor Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ “age tables”. He found a bright ten-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.

Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more. He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.

1.What do people commonly believe?

A.People1 s IQ levels fall as they get older and older.

B.It’s wise for people to share family members’ views.

C.The intelligence changes no more during adulthood.

D.Doing challenging deeds is good for one’s intelligence.

2.The underlined word “nosedive” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ________.

A.vary B.fall C.change D.develop

3.Which of the following can help improve one’s intelligence according to Professor Flynn?

A.Staying with smart people. B.Making many friends.

C.Doing exercise every day. D.Learning from parents.

4.The purpose of the text is to ________.

A.persuade B.advertise C.entertain D.inform

With only about 1,800 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species (物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researcher has been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”. Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M University Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the firstever attempt at cloning a dog, believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (怀孕). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

1.The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to ________.

A.make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

B.transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

There is a man watching me. He doesn’t think I know he’s there, but I do. He carries some sort of machine and it is making me nervous. I’ve been using the back entrance (入口) because I don’t think he knows it is there. I worry about going outside but with a young family to feed I have to. I go and come back quickly. So far I have managed to bring in the meals without him realising I’m gone. The family know something is wrong even though I try to keep it from them by acting normally and keeping them away from the front entrance.

My family are getting bored. They need to stretch their legs and run and play in the open. We can’t stay prisoners like this for much longer. I’m going out for supplies and decide that if the watcher is still there when we have eaten I will face the danger.

The time has come, the meal is over and he is still there, still watching. I push the family back and away from the entrance. I walk slowly down the passage and outside. I take a few steps forward and sit down—I stare at him. He seems unsettled (混乱的) by my appearance and moves his machine about. The birds nearby go silent as I break into a run. I must protect my family.

“Good evening and welcome to the BBC news at ten. Here are the latest headlines.     Are people less or more happy when they get older? A study in 2018 found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. 1.

Happiness was the highest among the youngest adults and those in their early 70's. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their 70’s and 80’s. The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. 2.The researchers also considered possible influences like, having young children being unemployed or being single. Bu, they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

3. One theory is that, as people get older, they become more than thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

4.In another study, people in their 80’s reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep. The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. 5.But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.

A.So why will happiness increase with age?

B.Researchers surveyed more than 150, 000 American adults.

C.At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85.

D.Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their 50's.

E.Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age.

F.The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women.

G. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.

A new study suggests climate conditions in the Sahara Desert, one of hottest, driest and most deserted areas in the world, have changed from wet to dry a about every 20,000 years.

But previous evidence has suggested the Sahara did not always experience such extreme heat and dry conditions. At times, the Sahara Ranged to a very wet climate. This permitted plants and animals to develop and grow and led to the creation of human settlements. Now, they have discovered more evidence, which, the lead researcher David Mc Gee says, supports the idea that the Sahara's climate kept changing between wet and dry about every 20,000,years.

McGee reported these climate changes were mainly driven by changes in the Earth's(地轴)as the planet travels round the sun .This process affects the amount of sunlight between seasons. Every 20,000 years the Earth receives more strong summer sunlight. When the Earth's axis changes again, the amount of sunlight is reduced. This season change happened continuously every 20,000 years. The other part of the season produced rainy conditions, resulting in a wetter, greener, plant-rich environment. When the rainy activity weakens, the climate becomes hot and dry, like the Sahara remains today.

The scientists based their research on dust collected from ocean sediment(沉积物)in the Atlantic Ocean bottom off the coast of West Africa. The dust contained layers ()of ancient sediment built up over millions of years. Each layer could contain traces of Saharan dust as well as the remains of life forms. This information was used to assess over what time period the dust had built up. This led to the overall finding that the Saharan changes from wet to dry climates happened every 20,000 years.

David McGee said that today we only see the Sahara Desert as an extremely deserted and “inhospitable” place. The new study suggests that the area's climate has changes between grasslands and a much wetter environment, and back to dry climates, even over the last quarter million years. McGee says he thinks the latest research can be valuable in studying the Sahara's history as it relates to human settlement.

1.What does the new study find about the Sahara Desert?

A. It is one of the hottest, driest and most deserted areas in Africa.

B. It always experiences extreme conditions because of its position.

C. Its climate changes between wet and dry about every 20,000 years.

D. Its environmental conditions stop plants and animals from surviving.

2.What is the direct reason for Sahara's climate changes?

A. Rainy activity. B. Solar radiation.

C. Human activity. D. Global environment.

3.How did the researchers acquire the evidence?

A. By analyzing ocean life.

B. By studying Sahara’s history.

C. By collecting dust on the coast.

D. By examining mean sediment.

4.What does the underlined word “inhospitable” probably mean?

A. Unsuitable to live. B. Insignificant lo study.

C. Unable to explore. D. Impossible to change.

Daniel Lamplugh remembers going shopping with his dad on Black Friday." Waking up at 6 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving is what I grew up doing," says the University of New Orleans film student.

A lot has changed since those childhood days. Online retailers(零售商)have forced many chains out of business. Consumers are increasingly shopping with their smart-phones. But a funny thing happened on the way to the future: Most shoppers are not going all-digital. Surveys show they're eager for good experiences at retail stores.

This November and December, for the first time ever retailer websites will get more traffic from mobile users than computer users, predicts Adobe Digital In sights." We live our lives with a combination of the physical and the digital." says Kit Yarrow, author of book Decoding the New Consumer Mind. Retailers have to understand it's not a question of either/or. It's a question of combining the two.

Heather Howe, an MBA student, said," Consumers like shopping on their phones and online because it's more convenient and because there are more options. I went to the Vans store to try on shoes and then I actually purchased them online while I was in the store.

While mobile sales are growing, the widest use smart-phones in stores is researching products or looking up product information(58 percent), closely followed checking or comparing prices(54 percent), according to a survey.

"My phone plays a huge role in online shopping, because I am on the email list for all of my favorite brand. so I get many emails daily informing me of sales, "s Rachel Lynch, who works at a Boston public-relation agency." Also, a store has an app that allows me to chat with other users about the products, and read reviews Online reviews are one of the first things I look at when I am about to buy a new product.”

“Electronics and kitchen equipment are definitely online purchases for me, since they're heavy to get home on the subway and often cheaper online," says Michael Miller-Ernest, a manager in Brooklyn,N.Y.

1.What do most shoppers tend to do now?

A.Do shopping all-digitally.

B.Use computers to do online shopping.

C.Do window shopping in shopping malls.

D.Go to physical stores with their smart-phones.

2.What's Kit Yarrow's suggestion for retailers?

A.Reaching both online and offline consumers.

B.Focusing on either the physical or the digital.

C.Encouraging consumers to use smart-phones.

D.Providing more convenience for computer users.

3.What does Heather Howe think of online stores?

A.They offer wider choices.

B.They sell high quality goods.

C.They will replace physical stores.

D.They are burning shoppers' patience.

4.What can be inferred about Rachel Lynch's habits?

A.She buys heavy goods online.

B.She often writes users' reviews.

C.She is fond of sending producers emails.

D.She tries to learn about other users' experience.

At 24, Tiffany Calver might worry she has already peaked (达到顶峰) as a DJ. She began DJing as a hobby, uploading mixes to her SoundCloud. Her high-energy selections soon caught the ears of the online station Radar Radio and then Drake’ s management, leading her to land many firsts.

“I just want to express myself,” she says. “I’m not interested in copying anyone else’s work; I have to be me. I love artists such as Kojey Radical whose lyrics (歌词) are so aware of human experiences. There are also great examples set by artists from the older generation like Ghetts. Ghetts actually cooperated with Kojey on Black Rose, which is all about colourism — prejudice against darker-skinned women — a huge problem in the black community (团体).”

“It’s really exciting to see the BBC taking notice of a new generation of tastemakers in our community. I remember a time when there was no place for younger voices. Snoochie Shy is taking on the 1Xtra rap (说唱) from Monday to Thursday and Charlie Sloth is being replaced by two women, which is huge for one of the biggest radio stations in the country. I think it’ll have a big effect and encourage more women to follow suit.”

“It was great to hear women such as Rico Nasty, who is aggressive, succeed last year because, even as a DJ, I hate it when people tell me I have to ‘play something for the ladies’. There’s such a rich history of unapologetic women in hip-hop, from Lil’ Kim to Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. Even rappers such as Noname, who might not have as much of an aggressive sound but can talk about politics in the same song, are not afraid to show all the layers there are to being a woman. It isn’t just soft and feminine.”

1.We learn from paragraph 2 that Kojey Radical and Ghetts ________.

A.are a new generation B.are in the same station

C.dare to express themselves D.live in the same community

2.What does Calver think of Charlie Sloth’s replacement?

C.It allows women to change jobs. D.She holds positive attitude towards it.

3.Which of the following words can describe the women mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.Brave. B.Creative.

C.Selfless. D.Considerate.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.The success in music. B.The new voice of rap.

C.The different trend in DJ. D.The influence of a woman.

A few months after return to the US from Spain, I took a French course. I could speak well Spanish, so I decided to study other language. In the first lesson, Mr. White guided us to do a lot of pronunciation exercise. He would say a word and two in Frenchand each of us were asked to follow him in turn. When it was my turn, he kept having me to repeat what he said. After class, I ask Mr. White why. “I find it great fun. I've never heard American speak French in a Spanish accent" he said happily.

Most of us don't have millions of dollars to go door- to-door to persuade people to care about climate change. But most of us do have parents.1.Because if we can't convince the people who love us more than anything in the world to take action on climate who can we convince?

It might be a hard conversation. If you do accept this challenge, here are a few suggestions 2.If you've ever used any poisonous terms, please get rid of them from your vocabulary. Otherwise, you 're making everything worse.

Share a couple of informative articles on the topic. Bill McKibben's article in Rolling Stone is great and very readable.3.The most important thing for them to understand is that on our current path we may no longer have a climate that allows for stablesecure societies within the lifetimes of today s children.

Once these unpleasant facts are laid out, making it clear that you aren't blaming them for this. Your parents likely made their decisions with a strong sense of morality and social responsibility, and could only make those decisions based on the information they had at the time.4.But now that you have provided the new information, talk about how it warns them, and all of usto behave in new ways.

Encourage them to buy environmentally- friendly goods and services as much as possible. Talk to them about trying to avoid using non-renewable resources and make it clear that this will not be enough.5.

A.Warn them to care about the change.

B.Talk to them with love and respect.

C.There is no need to flood them with data.

D.So let's talk to them about climate change.

E.There are a lot of interesting articles about climate change in it.

F.Therefore, if they have done something improperly, it is not their fault.

G.This is a challenge that requires us all to act as citizens, not just as consumers.

The electricity bill for an average family with 2 children is worth about 1 full salary per year, but the revolutionary EcoVolt could put 50% of that money back into your pocket.

In 2017, a revolutionary new product called EcoVolt hit the market. Initially it was separated from the general public, all because it offered the opportunity for average families to save up to 50% of their monthly energy costs. EcoVolt is a small, simple, affordable, and easy to use plug in unit that stops unnecessary power from entering the electrical cables and overloading the network, EcoVolt is the utility (公用事业) provider' s best-kept secret. They 've been trying to hide it from the everyday power consumer and even have banned the sale of it in retail shops —just to maximize their profit. However, thanks to the internet, the secret is now out, and everyday customers are now attaining the rewards of less power consumption overall, as well as less power used by household appliances. Your household appliances (家用电器) may last longer than previously. Basically, EcoVolt provides the opportunity for you to save between 30 and 50 percent on your energy bill. That's a phenomenal saving and leaves few questions as to why this has been hidden from consumers.

The benefits of EcoVolt are huge, and researchers are convinced this device could spell the end of unaffordable power bills that can cripple the average wage earner at the end of the month. Scientists initially spent many months trying to expose its efficiency, but those studies now prove that EcoVolt should be common in every household.

It's easy to connect, simply by plugging it into your wall, and it's suitable for both standard homes and apartments connected to a power grid (电网). It also has a counter which shows how you're making more efficient use of your energy, all the while allowing you to gain the rewards of a more everlasting household appliance lifecycle. In just 1-2 months, you've made your money back on your initial purchase.

1.What do we know about EcoVolt?

A.It is a new affordable website service.

B.It is a revolutionary new network product.

C.It is a new simple electricity- saving device.

D.It is a revolutionary electrical money-saving app.

2.What does the underlined word “cripple" in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Bring many benefits.

B.Bring too much burden.

C.Get rid of difficulty.

D.Get into debts.

3.How does EcoVolt benefit consumers?

A.It helps consumers save much on their electricity bill.

B.It makes it easier for consumers to use appliances.

C.It connects more families to the Internet.

D.It makes electricity use much securer.

4.We can infer from the last paragraph that EcoVolt ______.

A.is very convenient and favourable

B.is suitable for both home and public use

C.will be an everlasting household appliance

D.can help gain rewards of purchase discount

If you're one of the millions of Americans now trapped in home because of the COVID-19it might feel like you're cooking more than you've ever cooked in your entire life. And maybe you' re planning to reduce your home food wastes. A good way of dealing with them is to learn to make compost (堆肥).

Select your food wastes. Start with fruits and vegetables — the skin of a sweet potatothe top of your strawberry. Also tea bags, coffee grounds, old flowers and even eggshells are good raw materials. Store these food wastes in a container so you can add them bit by bit. The container doesn't have to be bought online. It can just be an old milk carton (纸箱) or an old wooden chest —just work with what you have available. Also, you can store the food wastes in a bag in your freezer or fridge. That's an easy way to avoid odors and insects in your kitchen.

The crucial step is to make the compost mix. In the world of composting you're inevitably going to hear about ''the greens and browns''—the two main elements for your mix. ''Greens'' are typically wet food wastes, like fruit and vegetable peelings. They are a crucial part for the growth of organisms (微生物),''Browns" are typically dry and they are more carbon rich like newspapers, dried leavesand pine needles. A good thing to remember is when you're layering put the dry browns on the bottom with the wet greens on the top because they allow water and air to flow. That will make sure organisms can do their job.

How long do you have to wait for the compost breakdown? If it's hot, you could get there in two months pretty easy. If it's cold, you could be there in six months, And for every component to break down, it might be a year.

In the end ''your nose knows'' when the compost is ready. It just smells so woody, earthy, sweet or sometimes sour. The smell can tell how well you work at your compost.

1.What is a good solution to your home food wastes?

A.Make a plan and reduce the wastes.

B.Collect the picked wastes to make compost.

C.Select the wastes and bury them into the earth.

D.Pick the wastes and put them in a bag in your fridge.

2.What plays a crucial role in making the compost mix?

A.Wet ''greens''

B.Dry "browns''

C.Carbon rich materials.

D.Wet ''greens'' and dry ''browns''.

3.Why should the ''browns'' be put on the bottom with the ''greens'' on the top?

A.To help the organism work on the compost efficiently.

B.To save more space for the water and air to flow.

C.To allow the water and air to flow into the container.

D.To make sure the organism can live longer and better.

4.What does the author feel about making compost?

A.Pretty easy and fun.

B.Complex and time killing.

C.Demanding patience but worthwhile.

D.Calling for hard work but enjoyable.

It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25. I didn't think there would be any patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five bodies showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.

“Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully.

“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.

But when it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headachesbut the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.

Something was wrong, but I didn't say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She respondedTake your time; it's warm in here.”

On a hunch (直觉)I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address— they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.

I looked out at the family huddled by the Christmas tree. The littlest one was pointing at the television and saying something loudly and excitedly to her mother. The oldest one was looking at an ornament on the Christmas tree.

I went back to the nurses' station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to compassion for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into actionmuch as we do when there's a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.

We were all offered a free meal in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas Dayso we claimed that meal and prepared a banquet for our Christmas guests. As seriously as we met the physical needs of the patients that came to us that day our team worked to meet the needs, and exceed the expectations, of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day. Lateras the family walked to the door to leave, the four year -old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, "Thanks for being our angels today.”

1.What did the author learn from the family s descriptions of presenting problems?

A.Two of the children had headaches.

A.asking them some questions

B.listening to their introduction

D.checking their registration information

3.After knowing about the homeless family, the nurses ______.

A.gave them a medical treatment

B.provided them with a big dinner

C.prepared a Christmas tree for them

D.held a big Christmas party for them

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.An Unusual Christmas Emergency

B.Warm hearted and Beautiful Nurse Angels

C.Having Christmas Together With a Poor Family

It doesn't take decades of life experience to have a great idea, as many of these young inventors have proved.

The Electronic Television

The electronic television was first designed by a 14-year-old kid in 1920. Philo Taylor Farnsworth shared his concept of an image transmitting (影像传送) device, an early design of the electronic television, with his science teacher, drawing diagrams on several blackboards in class.

By the age of 21 Farnsworth had a working model which served as a basis to all later development and versions of electronic televisions, After discovering a collection of technology magazines in the attic (阁楼) of his family's new home, he developed a passion and interest in electronics, which led him to explore inventions in the field of, specifically, the image transmission.

In 1927, a few years out of high school, Farnsworth was the first inventor to transmit a television image of a dollar sign, composed of 60 horizontal lines.

Braille Language

Louis Braille suffered a serious eye injury when he was just 3 years old. Not only did the accident cause him blindness on that side, but the infection spread and blinded the other eye as well. After more than a decade of struggling with the slow system of tracing his finger over raised letters, Braille was 12 when he learned of a method of silent communication originally created for the French military. He simplified it, and in 1824 the Braille language was born.

Popsicles (冰棍)

A lot of kids are easily distracted (分散注意力)—and thanks to the short attention span of 11-year-old Frank Epperson we now have popsicles. In 1905, Epperson, a San Francisco native, was stirring powdered drink mix into a cup of water when something else caught his attention. The mixture was forgotten outside the door, and when Epperson rediscovered the drink in the morning, it was a deliciously portable frozen popsicle. After years of making the frozen treats for friends, and eventually his own. children, Epperson filed for a patent in 1924.

Last weekend, I went hike with some friends. Setting off early in the morning, we gathered at the gate of a park in ours city. Then we headed for our destination. We have planned to climb a hill near the park. On the way, we talked, laughed or sang happily. It took us three hour to reach the top. The wonderfully view from the top made all the efforts worthwhile. We had a nice rest and picnic, sharing that we carried in our bags each other. At about four in the afternoon, we began our back trip. It was so a nice experience to get close to the nature and enjoy fresh air that we had a great day.
