One day, I was taking a nap in the red chair in my office when I woke up to the sound of a car crash. I sat up and looked, immediately, out my window. Across the street, in a parking lot, a car had just backed into a chain-link fence. The car must have been moving fast, because it was in bad shape: Its hood had popped up. The fence was damaged, bent out in exactly the shape of the car’s back end.

I watched the driver get out of the car. He was strong with a shaved head; he wore cargo shorts and a flannel (法兰绒) shirt unbuttoned to expose his chest hair. I disliked him immediately. After a few seconds of assessing the damage, he attempted to pull the ruined fence back into place, but it wouldn’t move. He tried to push the fallen piece of bumper back onto his car, but that only made the rest of his bumper fall off too.

I sat in my red chair, looking out my window, silently cheering. I think I laughed out loud. This was a ridiculous masterpiece. He climbed out from under the collapsed fence and limped back to the apartment building above the lot, rubbing his elbow. The man—that disgusting man—was going to leave all the chaos behind for someone else to clean up.

But the man appeared a few minutes later with some tools. He got to work immediately, removing one of the fence’s bent support bars and hammering it straight on the asphalt (沥青). For the next hour, I watched out my window as he doggedly(固执地) fixed the fence, even improved it. Now the fence would be extra secure, stronger than before, impossible to damage.

This strange man was actually a hero. I was the lazy one, with my kneejerk (应激反应) judgments, my superiority (优越感) from three stories up. My ugly assumptions, I realized, were all about myself. I would never have fixed that fence; I would have panicked and run away.

Years later, I still look out my window at that fence almost every day. It still looks brand new, It makes me wonder what else that man has improved, and how I can make myself more like him.

Temples have existed for thousands of years. They are the proof of cultures and civilization that existed many years ago. With their excellent architecture and structure they fascinate visitors from around the world.

Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven is a Taoist temple in Beijing, the capital of China. The temple was constructed in the 14th century by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty as his personal temple, where he would pray for good harvest and to make up for the sins of his people. The temple's architecture is quite interesting: Everything in the temple, which represents heaven, is circular whereas the ground levels, which represent the earth, are square. It symbolizes the relationship between the earth and heaven, the human world and God's world, which stands at the heart of Chinese cosmogony.

Wat Rong Khun “White Temple”

Immediately upon entering the grounds of Chiang Rai's ''White Temple'' in Thailand, you’ll realize this contemporary, unconventional temple stands out, even in a country crowded with places of worship. The White Temple is incredibly different and unique in its architecture, art and design. In fact, it's designed in a very modern way, but still sticking to and respecting the conventional Buddhist principles. This temple is all white with many artistic decorations and statues full of mirrors that create nice silvery/glittering reflections.

Kinkaku-ji

Kyoto is filled with beautiful shrines and temples, but none can be compared to the beauty of Kinkaku-ji. This Buddhist temple has acquired a lot of fame recently and has become one of the most visited places in Japan. Whether you visit during the fall when there are red momiji leaves contrasting the gold, in winter when the gold is topped with pure white snow, in spring with the cherry blossoms, or in summer allowing you to see the beautiful temple's golden reflection—there is never a bad time to visit this beautiful temple.

Golden Temple

The Golden Temple in Punjab, India is the most sacred shrine of Sikhism. For the Sikhs, the Golden Temple symbolizes endless freedom and spiritual independence. The site of the temple began with a small lake that was so peaceful that even Buddha came there to meditate (冥想). Thousands of years later, Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism also lived and meditated by the lake. The temple itself is decorated with marble sculptures, gilded in gold and covered in precious stones.

1.If you're interested in meditation, you would like to go to _________.

A.Kinkaku-ji B.Temple of Heaven

C.Golden Temple D.Wat Rong Khun “White Temple”

2.What do the four temples in the text have in common?

A.They are all located in Asia.

B.They are all Buddhist temples.

In her essay Friends, Good Friends and Such Good Friends, Judith Viorst creates a number of categories(分类) for Friendships, for her, some friendships are based on convenience, some on current shared interests, some on past shared history, some on accidental crossing - of - paths, and on and on. 1.

I have just two categories of friends. 2. The short-term, low-investment (投资) category is a large and changeable group made up of people I’ve met since I moved to New Orleans eighteen months ago. My New Orleans friends are mostly classmates in my writing courses, people who see and comment my writing courses and whose writing I see and comment.

3. But they are also unstable(不稳定的) and possibly disappointing. This is because we often know each other better through reading each others writing than we do through honest time spent together. Such knowledge and familiarity, without necessarily the investment can create stresses.

The long-term, high-investment category is primarily made up of people I left behind when I moved to New Orleans. 4. They are friends who know me, love me, and who can be counted on for anything, even though they live 1,500 miles away. I know these friends from the way they wash dishes to the way they choose a restaurant or drink their coffee. Every one of them was once a person in my life, standing in the low-investment category, and then slowly becoming forever friends. 5. And the work is hard.

A.And the only difference between the two is time and lots of work.

B.Such classification by her is beyond me.

C.The change takes just that Investment.

D.In many ways, they are friends whose concern is only based on profit.

E.These low-investment friendships are delightfully strong and serious at times.

F.This is a firm and efficient group, whose numbers can be counted on one hand.

G.Friends of the low-investment category are always trustworthy

Poetry is one of mankind’s oldest art forms. Since first analyzed by Aristotle, poetry has been part of every major art movement, and some say it captures emotion better than any other forms. Reading peotry is necessary to gain a full understanding of the world and has many additional benefits .

The immediate benefits of reading poetry are improvements to vocabulary. Poetry makes the reader familiar with new terms and encourages verbal analysis. This presents reading as a creative act in its own right. The common practice of memorizing poems also improves long-term brain health. Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are less susceptible (受影响) to Alzheimer’s.

Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think. In great poetry, meaning is not obvious or one-dimensional (维度). Understanding poetry is an active practice, rather than the passive engagement encouraged with prose (散文). Readers of poetry are more likely than nonreaders to analyze information for viewpoints. This skill benefits students, but also anyone who wants to form their own opinions of news items or gain a better perspective upon documents like contracts. The critical thinking skills developed through reading poetry give greater control language itself.

The most remarkable power of literature is its ability to unite reader and writer across time and cultural boundaries. As condensed(浓缩的) literature, poetry offers these benefits in a powerful way. Poetry triggers memories and emotions in its readers. This connection between universal emotions and personal experience encourages the development of empathy. A reader might have no practical conception of what life was like during the Elizabethan-era in England. However, Shakespeare’s Sonnets with their universal themes of love and longing, can bridge the gap of centuries and help us gain an insight into peopled feelings in the 17th century.

1.Which of the following shows the benefit memorizing poetry brings to the brain?

A.It improves peopled long-term memory.

B.It improve s one’s ability of analysing issues.

C.It makes one less likely to catch Alzheimer’s

D.It makes one act more creatively.

2.In what way does poetry improve critical thinking?

A.Readers have to analyze information to form viewpoints.

B.Readers must understand the obvious meaning of poetry.

C.Readers have to gain a better perspective upon documents.

D.Readers have to have a good control over language.

3.Why does the author mention Shakespeare’s Sonnets?

A.To show poetry motivates us learn different cultures.

B.To show poetry helps develop our empathy.

C.To show the universal themes of poetry.

D.To show Shakespeare’s understanding of life.

4.What is the purpose of the text?

A.To ask us to read poems.

B.To show how to appreciate poems.

C.To tell the importance of poetry in history.

D.To explain the benefits of reading poetry.

''They're made out of meat. ''

''Meat? ''

''There's no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our craft, and probed them all the way through. They're completely meat.''

''That's impossible. What about the radio signals? The message to the stars? ''

''They used the radio waves to talk, but the signals don't come from them. The signals come from machines. ''

''So who made the machines? That's who we want to contact. ''

''Spare me. Okay, maybe they're only part meat. You know, like the Weddilei. A meat head with an electron plasma(电浆) brain inside. ''

''No. We thought of that, since they do have meat heads, like the Weddilei. But I told you, we probed them. They're meat all the way through. ''

''No brain? So. . . what does the thinking? ''

''You're not understanding, are you? You're refusing to deal with what I'm telling you. The brain does the thinking. The meat. ''

''Oh, my! So what does this meat have in mind? ''

''First it wants to talk to us. Then I imagine it wants to explore the Universe, contact other creatures, exchange ideas and information. The usual. ''

''We're supposed to talk to meat! ? ''

''That's the idea. That's the message they're sending out by radio. 'Hello. Anyone out there? Anybody home? ' That sort of thing. ''

''They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts? ''

''They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. They can even sing by forcing out air through their meat. ''

When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years at my life. I was a total outsider, bullied at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.

But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.

Books were my time friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.

After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.

Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

In the past, most people would just throw away their worn-out appliances (家用电器)but due to the many environmental issues that this has caused over the years, it is highly suggested to consider recycling or other ways.

Donate Your Appliances to an Organization

The first thing that most people think about when they hear about donating is giving old things to a charity or an organization. However, you should ensure that your appliances still work. Not only do you put repair costs on the charity, but you are also using the organization as a way to get rid of your junk.

Find a New Owner

There are many people that could greatly benefit from y our used appliances, including new couples, students, poverty-stricken families, and many others. Similar to donating to a charity, it is important to ensure that your appliances are in good working order, and if they are not, you can put up an ad definitely stating that you are giving away the broken appliances for free.

Contact a Recycling Company

Before you do recycle your old items, there are several things that you should be aware of. First of all, you need to know about how refrigerator freezers, and air conditioners are recycled, as often these must be covered. According to your city, you may be required to take off the doors of your appliances to protect children or animals from getting trapped inside and getting hurt.

Donate Your Appliances as Scrap (废品) Metal

If your old appliances are completely broken, it might be best to just give them away as scrap metal. Fortunately, there are many different organizations and companies that need as much metal as they can get. Additionally, you won't have to do any of the scrapping or tearing apart by your-selves, as professionals take care and effort in removing harmful elements.

1.What's the similarity between the first two ways?

A.The appliances are given away for free.

B.The appliances should be better in good condition.

C.The appliances will be sent to organizations.

D.The harmful parts of appliances must be got rid of.

2.If we want to recycle our old appliances, what should we consider?

A.What kind of appliances can be recycled.

B.Who can really benefit much from them.

C.Whether they will cause some danger or harm.

D.Which is the most suitable recycling company.

3.What can you do if you want to donate your completely broken appliances?

A.Tear them apart on your own.

B.Give them to companies that need metal.

C.Remove the harmful elements of them yourself.

D.Make sure companies that want the metal pay the delivery fee.

The forest of my hometown is beautiful no matter how the season is. I was driving slowly in this morning when I saw a deer live in the woods appear in the middle of the road. I came to the full stop, and we stared at each other. His eyes seemed wisely. He had been in this world for some month and I didn’t want end his life. Finally, I motioned with my hand for him to go on. Having seen anything to fear, he jumped across the road. I drive on smiling at the magic of this moment but thanked God that I had been going slowly not to hit this beautiful creature.

When you try too hard but you don’t succeed; when despite all your efforts you don’t get the results you need, give up and move on. 1.  Confused? What is wrong with giving up?

Oh yes, we all have been trained and conditioned to work hard to achieve our dreams, and that is a good thing. The problem arises when all these inspirational quotes start confusing us. These messages tell people not to give up, 2.  They tell one to “ try and try  again” until they succeed, but that amount of effort should only be put toward what you really want in life and one should never quit at what they think to be their life’s purpose. 3.  If you suck at piano and you know it’s because you don’t even like the instrument, give it up. If no matter how hard you study you can hardly score an above average grade, don’t worry, your talent lies somewhere else. Not everybody is an A-student.

4. Find out what you are good at, what makes you happy and then work on it. If you do, no one would have to tell you or inspire you not to give up because when you love something, you keep trying until you get it right and the enthusiasm flows from within. Don’t worry about what people will say or think, after all, it’s your life.5.

A.Let go of your life goal and live in the moment.

B.You have to live it and you have to be your own boss.

C.Try to recognize your talent, your ability and your skills.

D.and it proves that only efforts can make a big difference.

E.Make timely adjustment and run in the opposite directions.

Researchers from the MIT Media Lab, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Northeastern University used a robotic teddy bear, “Huggable”, across the Boston Children’s Hospital. More than 50 hospitalized children were divided into three groups that involved Huggable, a tablet-based virtual Huggable, or a traditional toy teddy bear. In general, the robotic Huggable improved various patient outcomes over the other two choices.

When first designed, Huggable was operated remotely by a specialist outside a child’ s room for the moment. Through software, a specialist could control the robot’s facial expressions and body actions. The specialists could also talk through a speaker — with their voice automatically changed to sound more childlike — and monitor the participants via camera.

During the treatments involving Huggable for kids aged 3 to 10 years, a specialist would sing nursery rhymes to younger children through the robotic bear and move the arms during the song. Older kids would play the I Spy game, where they had to guess an object in the room described by the specialist through Huggable. Through self-reports and questionnaires, the researchers recorded how much the patients and families liked Huggable. A greater percentage of children and their parents reported that the children enjoyed playing with Huggable more than with the virtual figure or traditional teddy bear.

The study proved the possibility of including Huggable in the treatments for children. Results also showed that children playing with Huggable experienced more positive emotions overall. They also got out of bed and moved around more, and emotionally connected with the robot, asking it personal questions and inviting it to come back later to meet their families. “Such improved emotional and physical outcomes are all positive factors that could contribute to hospitalized children’ s better and faster recovery,” the researchers write in their study.

The study also provided a basis for developing a fully autonomous Huggable robot, which is the researchers’ final goal. In the future, that automated robot could be used to improve children’ s further treatment and care, and monitor their well-being.

1.What can we learn about Huggable?

A.It was first designed for disabled kids.

B.It can make facial expressions.

C.It talks like a caring parent.

C.Disappointing. D.Unhelpful.

3.How did Huggable help the hospitalized children with their treatment?

A.It improved their mental experience.

B.It protected them from possible virus.

C.It gave tips on taking good care of young patients.

D.It provided up-to-date information about their diseases.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.The fast development of robots in medical area.

B.A new technology in medicine to treat children.

C.Robots’ advantages over other methods of treatment.

D.A robotic teddy bear used in caring for hospitalized children.

While the human world is suffering from the novel coronavirus outbreak, our planet is actually showing certain signs of “recovery” from the damage caused by human activity. According to the BBC, new satellite images released by the European Space Agency showed that levels of air pollutants and greenhouse gases have “fallen sharply” in major cities in Europe and the United States ever since the lockdown started.

This is what happened after recent discoveries in Antarctica. An international team of 89 scientists found that the ice in Greenland and Antarctica is melting six times faster in the 2010s than it was in the 1990s. And in February, Argentina’s Marambio research station in Antarctica recorded a record high temperature of 20.75 on the continent.

So what exactly will happen if the temperature keeps rising and the ice keeps melting? A third study might give you an idea. A team of scientists drilled a hole into the seafloor in west Antarctica and extracted (提取) material from underground, in which they found traces of roots, spores and pollen—typical products of a rainforest—that dated back 90 million years ago. In other words, Antarctica was very likely a rainforest back when the dinosaurs walked on Earth. But given the fact that the South Pole has four months of darkness during winter—even millions of years ago—scientists believe that the rainforest could only exist if the greenhouse gas concentrations were extremely high back then to keep the continent warm when there was little or no sunlight.

“We didn’t know that this Cretaceous (白垩纪的) greenhouse climate was that extreme,” Johann Klages of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany and a co-author of the research told the Guardian. “It shows us what carbon dioxide is able to do.”

Ice or no ice, Antarctica will be—and has always been—fine with extreme changes. The human world, however, may not be.

Now, during the coronavirus lockdown, we’ve seen the changes resulting from less human activity. Hopefully, we’ll hold on to those changes—not for Antarctica or the planet, but for ourselves.

1.What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?

A.Our planet is returning to its original state due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

B.The lockdown of major cities contributed to the decrease of greenhouse gases.

C.The novel coronavirus has a positive effect on the human beings.

D.The novel coronavirus outbreak resulted from human activity.

2.What do we learn from the third study?

A.Typical products of a rainforest were dug out in Antarctica.

B.Traces of dinosaurs living in rainforests were spotted in Antarctica.

C.There was a good possibility of high greenhouse gas concentrations in Antarctica.

D.There used to be enough sunlight for the rainforest in the Cretaceous Antarctica.

3.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.Human activity doesn’t threaten life in Antarctica.

B.The ice in Antarctica is melting faster in the 2010s than now.

C.We should reduce carbon dioxide emissions for our own sake.

D.The lockdown can be carried on to slow down global warming.

4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To encourage us to defeat the novel coronavirus.

B.To explain the effects of greenhouse gases.

C.To draw our attention to ecosystem in Antarctica.

D.To call on us to reduce human impact on the environment.

They are probably the longest-standing and biggest rivals (对手) in international sport— Chinese badminton player Lin Dan, with his deadly smashes (扣球) and drop shots, and his Malaysian rival Lee Chong Wei, who is known for his spirit and determination.

Over the years, the two have competed with each other many times, and both have experienced victory and defeat. But Lin beat Lee the first two times they faced each other in the Olympic Games—in Beijing in 2008 and then in London in 2012.

And that was inadmissible for Lee. In fact, according to BadmintonBlaze.com, Lee once said that if he had the choice between winning an Olympic gold and beating Lin, he would absolutely choose victory over his old rival.

And he eventually did, at the 2016 Rio Games. When he beat Lin that day, Lee dropped to the floor, covered his face with his hands and looked around the stadium like a gold-medal moment although Lee eventually lost out in the final to another Chinese player, Chen Long.

All the years of trying to outdo each other have not only driven Lin and Lee to surpass (超越) themselves as players, but also developed a special friendship between the two.

They care for and encourage each other. They invited each other to their own weddings. And right before this year’s Malaysia Open, Lee, who wasn’t able to compete there on account of his nose cancer, wrote on social networking site Facebook, “My friend Lin Dan, you have my best wishes for this Malaysian Open. If I were to hope for a non-Malaysian to win the men’s singles title, I hope that it’s you my friend, my greatest rival.”

Lin and Lee are now pushing 36 and 37 respectively—ages by which most athletes would have retired—but they are planning to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, in the hope that they can play each other once again.

It’s as Badminton Association of Malaysia vice president David Wee once said of the two, “they bring out the best in each other”.

1.Which phrase can best describe their relationship?

A.Familiar strangers. B.Friends and enemies.

C.Colleagues and rivals. D.Teammates and competitors.

2.What does the underlined word “inadmissible” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Unacceptable. B.Inescapable.

C.Unexpected. D.Impossible.

3.What did Lee’s reaction at the 2016 Rio Games indicate?

A.He mistakenly believed he had won the gold medal.

B.He was confident to defeat Lin Dan next time.

C.He didn’t care about the Olympic gold medals.

D.He took his victory over Lin most seriously.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Lin ranks second to Lee in the world badminton.

B.Lin is sure to compete against Lee at the 2020 Olympics.

C.Lee has no intention to quit playing badminton in spite of his nose cancer.

D.Lee wished Lin to win the men’s singles title in this year’s Malaysia Open.

When Anne Glancey, a retired school teacher, received notice from the city of Hamilton Township that she would be fined up to $3,000 per day for code violations(违规) and repairs that needed to be made to her home, she didn't know what to do.She did not have the money to pay for the repairs, and she had no family or friends she could ask for help.

The only contact she regularly made with others was with her neighbors of five years,Adam and Kristin Polhemus. Anne showed the-letter to them which explained that she needed to scrape() and paint her house, remove the abandoned and rusted car in her yard, and cut the grass. These were three violations in total, each with a fine of no mote than$1 ,000, per day,per violation.Anne had grown up in the house, and the letter made her upset. She didn't know what she was going to do and she couldn't do this herself.“Anne, we'll help you get this fixed,”Adam said.

Kristin posted a call for help and volunteers to help make repairs and paint Anne's house on Facebook. Her post read as follows:

Hamilton area friends! Are you free for a few hours this weekend? We need you! Adam and I could use your help for some painting at the home of our elderly neighbor, Anne. As you know, she received a heavy fine and she's on a deadline to scrape and repaint her home to avoid the fine. She's limited in funds and the physical ability to do the work, and we'd love nothing more than to show her we care. We really do need your help; we only have a few people right now and we're hoping for about 20 volunteers to make this happen. THANK YOU!

“Some kids are naturally more competitive than others,” says professional adviser Roseann Clay. But certain factors play into the behavior of kids to make them want to win at everything.

One factor is that kids are becoming aware of what others think of them. Winning games and getting those top grades is a way to get loads of attention.1.When kids have a genuine fear of losing, this can drive them to be more competitive. And when they lose, bad emotions usually follow. How can parents deal with kids who get angry or upset when they don't win all the time?

2.Roseann suggests that parents make a point of showing how they handle losing well, while still having fun. And before any competitive activity or game, make sure everyone knows what the rules and expected behaviors are. This helps a child shift from an “I'm only good if I win”attitude to “ I'm having fun” attitude.

If a child is pushed to be too competitive and care about winning above all else, their emotional well-being is put at risk. The knock-on effect is that their confidence remains low.3.

Also, some children's anxiety causes them to be afraid of competition.

4.They should to open up conversation and focus on the feelings of kids and not their behaviors.

5.We can help them celebrate and enjoy all the small steps it took to get there, and encourage a more positive outlook and healthy competition. This will serve ! them throughout life as they manage stress.

A.Not all kids want to win.

B.Kids can still celebrate a win.

C.Parents shouldn't push these kids.

D.Insecurity can also be a factor here.

E.Insecure children want to win everything.

F.This can really rock a developing child's emotional core.

G.Children can learn to manage their emotions with role modeling.

They're life jacket orange, they’re robots and they're capable of sailing the high seas without human intervention.

On Tuesday the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched a pair of Saildrones(海洋无人机) in Pacific Northwest waters for the first time. Their summer long sailing journey will stretch from Vancouver Island to California. The Saildrone operators will collect data to help set future fishing seasons. The government wants to see whether seagoing. robots can extend fishery surveys now performed by expensive manned ships.

Nora Cohen from NOAA said,“The 23 foot tong seagoing robots can follow a remotely programmed course for up to a year at a time. And they don't require any fuel. We use wind and solar power to drive the sensors.”He added,“It means that we're able to go to places where we don't really want to send people, and go into weather that we really don't want anyone ever to be in, and be able to send back measurements.”

The primary mission is to investigate the species and number of fish in existence and the places where they are. Larry Hufnagle, scientist of NOAA Fisheries in Seattle, said a traditional big NOAA research ship-based survey costs around $25000 per day. By comparison, one Saildrone runs $2,500 per day.

“It could be a significant saving,”Hufnagle said. “But like anything else, there is a tradeoff in what you get and what you don't get. On the manned ship, we have limited time. It takes a lot of people. We spend a fair amount of money. But there is one thing the Saildrone can't do that humans can: cast a net to catch and positively identify the fish detected below. The Saildrones are going to give us additional data, not replacement data.”

Nora Cohen said Sail Drone, a venture capital-backed company based in Alameda, California, expects to launch a total of 11 of its seagoing robots to survey different water bodies for NOAA this year. The Bering and Arctic seas, coastal California and Gulf of Mexico will be the locations of additional missions.

1.What is the purpose of collecting fish data?

We're so attached to plastic, but we're careless consumers. Waste plastic is entering our ecosystems and food chains with untold consequences. Cleaning up our polluted world of plastic may seem a noble, but thankless task. However, some people are seeing economic opportunity in the mission.

Plastic Bank, a social enterprise from Canada, is monetizing plastic recycling while empowering those most affected by the waste. It works to prevent waste plastic from entering oceans by encouraging people in developing countries to collect plastic from their communities in exchange for cash, food, clean water or school tuition for their children. After collection, plastic is weighed, sorted, chipped, melted into balls and sold on as“raw material”to be made into everything from bottles for cleaning products to clothing.

“I saw in large quantities; I saw an opportunity,”CEO David Katz told the audience at the Sustainable Brands Oceans conference in Porto, Portugal on November 14.“We reveal the value in this material,”he added.

Plastic Bank was founded in 2013 and launched on the ground operations in 2014 in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western, Hemisphere, where close to 60% of the population live under the poverty line. As result of poor waste disposal and recycling infrastructure (基础设施)plastic waste enters rivers or is burned and poses the health threats to the local residents.

The company says i has over 2,000 collectors working in the country, with its full- time collectors on average 63% above the poverty line thanks to the income they make from the project. Through its app based payment system, many collectors now have bank accounts for the first time, and are able to ultimately escape ultra poverty.

“Nothing we're doing is against the laws of physics,”said Katz. “All the technology exists for us to solve and save the world. It's only creative thought.”

A.Test out creative ideas.

B.Discover new material.

C.Promote plastic recycling.

D.Stop people using plastic.

2.Which of the following shows the process of monetizing in Paragraph 2?

A.Purchasing- collecting—recycling.

B.Exchanging collecting—purchasing.

C.Collecting- exchanging—reproducing.

D.Persuading consuming—reproducing.

3.What do the numbers in Paragraph 5 indicate?

A.Haiti attaches great importance to recycling.

B.Many locals benefit greatly from the project.

C.Collecting is an efficient way to recycle waste.

D.The project has solved unemployment in Haiti:

4.What maybe the best title for the text?

A.Companies stand to ban plastic consumption

B.Technology finds its way to kick off poverty
