Turning clay into art

Many residents bought clay figurines in the past, especially during festivals or holidays, as they believed the items would bring good fortune, ward off evil spirits and prevent calamities 1.

Multiple skills, such as paper-cutting, embroidering, carving and New Year’s painting, are used to make the figurines. Local craftspeople use strong colors (such as bright red, light yellow and green) to create figurines, to convey people’s blessings for happiness and good luck, and to embody their desire to enjoy the good life. The artworks, characterized by vivid images depicted in an exaggerated way, have attracted countless people from both home and abroad 2. Moreover, as the unique art form embodies Fengxiang’s aesthetic, literary and artistic ideologies, the figurines have high historical and cultural value.

3. There are two ways to produce clay figurines; first, the mold-making method, during which the artists creates the figurines, such as the God of Longevity and the God of Wealth, from clay set in molds. The second technique is the hand-kneading method, during which the artist kneads clay into the shapes of different animals, such as the Chinese zodiac (the 12 animals, which represent the 12 Earthly Branches, to symbolize the years is which people are born) and scenes depicted in operas and stories.

Past generations of craftpeople did their best to pass on the craft to younger generations. 4. That has negatively affected the development of the handmade items. In 2006, China added the craft of making Fengxiang’s clay figurines to the list of the country’s intangible cultural heritage.

A.During past millennia, craftspeople have created numerous exquisite figurines, which have had tremendous aesthetic value.

B.For millennia, the figurines have brought happiness to countless Chinese families.

C.However, given the rapid industrial and technological development during the past several decades, clay figurines have been produced in a great number of molds with more complicated designs.

D.As a resule, the popularity of the art from has increased, both at home and abroad.

E.So far, Fengxiang’s clay figurines have been displayed in various cultural activities held in more than 30 countries, including France, Germany and the United States.

F.Making clay figurines involves several complcated procedures, including processing the new materials, designing the artworks, creating molds, and shaping, baking and painting.

Recently, a case of lifeboat ethics occurred. On Aug. 4, Graham and Sheryl Anley, while boating off the coast of South Africa, hit a rock. As the boat threatened to sink, the husband got off, but his wife was trapped in the boat. Instead of freeing his wife and getting her to shore, Graham grabbed Rosie, their pet dog. With Rosie safe and sound, Graham returned for Sheryl. All are doing fine.

It’s great story, but it doesn’t strike me as especially newsworthy. News is supposed to be about something fairly unique, and recent research suggests that, in the right circumstances, lots of people also would have grabbed their Rosie first.

We have strange relationships with our pets. We look after our pets with great love and better health care than billions of people receive. We speak to pets with the same high-pitched voices that we use for babies. As an extreme example of our feelings about pets, the Nazis had strict laws that guaranteed the kind treatment of the pets of Jews being shipped to death camps.

A recent paper by George Regents University demonstrates this human involvement with pets to an astonishing extent. Participants in the study were told a situation in which a bus is out o control, bearing down on a dog and a human. Which do you save? With responses from more than 500 people, the answer was that it depended: What kind of human and what kind of dog?

Everyone would save a brother, grandparent or close friend rather than a strange dog. But when people considered their own dog VS people less connected with them -- a distant cousin or a hometown stranger -- votes a favor of saving the dog came rolling in. And an astonishing 40% of respondents, including 46% of women, voted to save their dog over a foreign tourist.

What does a finding like this mean? First, it is that your odds aren’t so good if you find yourself in another country with a bus bearing down on you and a cute dog. But it also points to something deeper: our unprecedented attitude toward animals, which got its start with the birth of kind - hearted societies in the 19th century.

We prison people who abuse animals, put ourselves in harm’s way in boats between whales an whalers and show sympathy to Bambi and his mother. We can extend sympathy to an animal and feel its pain like no other species. But let’s not be too proud of ourselves. As this study and too much of our history show, we’re pretty selective about how we extend our kindness to other human beings.

1.Which of the following is true according to the article?

A.The story of the Anleys and their dog was too unique to be newsworthy.

B.Most people surveyed choose to save their own dog rather than a human.

C.It wa in the 19th century that human beings started to love their pets.

D.Human beings are more and more concerned with animals nowadays.

2.What is the function of the first of paragraph?

A.To create a relaxing mood for readers.

B.To present the theme of this essay straightly.

C.To lead in the main topic of this essay.

D.To raise problems that will be solved later.

3.The author mentions Nazi laws in the third paragraph ________.

A.to show how cruel the Nazis’ were to the Jews

B.as an example to persuade people not to love pets

C.to illustrate the strange relationship between human and pets

D.as an example to display the kindness of the Nazis

4.What does the author mainly argue for?

A.Pets are of great significance to us human beings.

B.We should rethink about out attitude towards animals and mankind.

C.It is kind of human beings to extend kindness to animals.

D.We should be selective when showing attitude toward other human beings.

It is one of the greatest mysteries of nature. In case you haven’t noticed, all living things follow very definite, individual rhythms, all as regular as a clock, but what makes them regular?

Though many scientists maintain that these rhythms are the result of some outside force like gravity or radiation or both, the results of most scientific researches agree with other scientists who believe that each living thing has its own built-in biological “time clock.”

Take the mystery of migration for example. Scientists can’t really explain why many species of birds migrate in the autumn even though the temperature is still summery. The birds just seem to snub the comfortable weather that they are having. When a certain time comes, they travel south by the thousand. In spring time, they migrate northwards when though there probably is snow still covering the ground when they finally arrive. Something said “go”, and they did.

Animals that hibernate are obeying individual time clock, too. When their clock indicates the time to take a winter’s nap, they do, and nothing can stop them. At a certain time in the spring, they wake up and come out regardless of the weather outside.

Plants appear to have yearly rhythms, such as the sprouting(发芽)of seeds, and they also have daily rhythms. Notice sometimes that plants raise their leaves in daylight and lower them at night.

If you live along the California coast, you can easily observe a demonstration of this mysterious clock functioning regularly. There, from February to September, the highest tides occur exactly every fourteen and four-fifths days, and during these high tides, but at no other time, small silvery fish called grunions surf-ride a wave to the beach. There the female deposits her eggs in the sand and the male, fertilize them; then both hitch a wave-ride back to the sea. Exactly fourteen and four-fifths days later, never before or after, the tiny eggs hatch, and the high tide carries the new habits out to sea.

1.According to the passage, the mysterious rhythms result from ________.

A.the influence of gravity on living species

B.the effect of radiation on living species

C.the influence of a mysterious outer force on living species

D.the internal mechanism inside the living species

2.The underlined word “snub” in the third paragraph probably means ________.

A.fight B.ignore

C.symbolize D.criticize

3.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A.Hibernating animals are obeying an internal time clock.

B.The positioning of the leaves of some plants is due to the daily rhythms.

C.The internal clock functioning is demonstrated in the reproducing habits of grunions.

D.The yearly hibernation is more because of the weather influence than the biological functioning.

4.The passage is mainly about ________.

A.the rhythms of life B.the reasons of mysterious hibermation

C.strange behaviors of species D.the timing for different events in the world of species

We can always bear voices comparing the education systems in China and the US. It’s true that there exist a lot of differences, but this cannot be an excuse 1. having a passive attitude toward studying in China.

When I came back from the US last year and 2. (continue) my senior high school education in China, I sensed many great differences. I thought that school in China was too hard, and that we didn’t do enough fun exercise except 3. (run) around playground together. I was not patient enough and I couldn’t help but cry to my mum. In short, I could not face the changes and the pressure.

My mum had a long talk with me. After that, I realized that 4. high school life in China is harder, it can give us more. The pressure helps us learn the true meaning of competition before we step into society, which gives us a 5. (determine) heart and teaches us to step forward no matter what the reality is. It’s like climbing a mountain, 6. might make you dizzy and nervous, but the top is always there waiting for you 7. you are strong enough to take one more step.

Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristic that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high-voltage(电压) transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?

Heroes are catalysts(催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountain top. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr, we might still have segregated(隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large-scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain and the committee meetings endless.

1.Although heroes may come from different cultures, they      .

A.generally possess certain inspiring characteristics

B.probably share some weaknesses of ordinary people

C.are often influenced by previous generations

D.all unknowingly attract a large number of fans

2.According to the passage, heroes are compared to high-voltage transformers in that     .

A.they have a vision from the mountaintop

B.they have warm feelings and emotions

C.they can serve as empowering examples of noble principles

D.they can make all people feel stronger and more confident

3.Madonna and Michael Jackson are not considered heroes because    .

A.they are popular only among certain groups of people

B.their performances do not improve their fans morally

C.their primary concern is their own financial interests

D.they are not clear about the principles they should follow

4.Gandhi and Martin Luther King are typical examples of outstanding leaders who      .

A.are good at demonstrating their charming characters

B.can move the masses with the skill and the charm

C.are capable of meeting all challenges and hardships

D.can provide an answer to the problems of their people

5.The author concludes that historical changes would      .

A.be delayed without leaders with inspiring personal qualities

B.not happen without heroes making the necessary sacrifices

C.take place if there were heroes to lead the people

D.produce leaders with attractive personalities

The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. For eighty-four days. Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned ____ handed. So conspicuously unlucky is he that the parents of his young, devoted apprentice(徒弟) and friend, Manolin, have ____ the boy to leave the old man in order to fish in a more prosperous boat. ____, the boy continues to care for the old man upon his return each night. He helps the old man haul his gear to his ramshackle hut(破旧不堪的陋室), secures food for him, and discusses the latest developments in American baseball, especially the trials of the old man’s hero, Joe DiMaggio. Santiago is ____ that his unproductive streak of failure will soon come to an end, and he ____ to sail out farther than usual the following day.

On the eighty-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago does as promised, sailing his skiff(小艇) far beyond the island’s shallow coastal waters and ____ into the Gulf Stream. He prepares his lines and drops them. At noon, a big fish, which he knows is a marlin(青枪鱼), takes the bait(鱼饵) that Santiago has placed one hundred fathoms deep in the waters. The old man expertly hooks the fish, but he cannot pull it in. Instead, the fish begins to pull to boat.

Unable to tie the line ____ to the boat for fear the fish would snap a taut line, the old man bears the strain of the line with his shoulders, back, and hands, ready to give slack should the marlin make a run. The fish ____ the boat all through the day, through the night, through another day, and through another night. The entire time, Santiago endured ____ pain from the fishing line. Whenever the fish lunges, leaps, or makes a dash for ____, the cord(绳) cuts Santiago badly. Although wounded and weary, the old man feels a deep empathy and admiration, for the marlin, his brother in suffering, strength, and determination.

As Santiago sails on with the fish, the marlin’s blood leaves a trail in the water and attracts sharks. The first to attack is a great make shark, which Santiago manages to kill with the harpoon(鱼叉). In the ____, the old man loses the harpoon and lengths of valuable rope, which leaves him vulnerable to other shark attacks. Although he kills several sharks, more and more appear. They devour(吞噬) the marlin’s precious meat, leaving only skeleton, head, and tail, Santiago punished himself for going “out too far,” and for sacrificing his great and worthy ____.

The next morning, a crowd of ____ fishermen gathers around the skeletal carcass of the fish, which is still lashed(紧系) to the boat. Knowing nothing of the old man’s struggle, tourists at a nearby café observe the ____ of the giant marlin and mistake it for a shark. Manolin, who has been worried over the old man’s absence, is moved to tears when he finds Santiago safe in his bed. The boy fetches the old man some coffee and the daily papers with the baseball scores, and watches him sleep. When the old man wakes, the two agree to fish as ____ once more. The old man returns to sleep and dreams his usual dream of lions at play on the beaches of Africa.

Over-dried Earth

The south-west of the United States, together with some parts of Mexico across the Rio Grande, is one of the driest parts of the North American continent. But, over the past two decades, even that expected dryness 1. (take) to the limit. According to Park Williams, who works at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, the current lack of rainfall in the area constitutes a megadrought of a severity 2.(see) on only four other occasions in the past 1,200 years.

Dr Williams studies the annual growth rings of 1,586 ancient trees, in order to reconstruct soil-moisture patterns going back to 800 A.D. During warm, wet years trees grow fast, producing wide rings. During cold, dry 3. they grow more slowly, producing narrow rings. During a drought, a tree 4. not grow much at all.

5.they describe in this week’s Science, the team identified dozens of droughts over the centuries in question. But four stood out. They then took the average soil-moisture value for the current drought and compared it with sequential(连续的) 19-year averages with the previous four, one of them 6.(last) nearly a century. This showed that the region is already drier than it was during the first three of the previous megadroughts, and is equivalent to the event of 1575-1603.

In a world 7. human actions are driving temperatures up, Dr Parker and his colleagues wondered how much people are 8.(blame) for this state of affairs. To estimate that, they turned to climate modelling.

Climate models are able to re-run the past with and 9. the warming effects of human activity, offering a way to compare what actually happened with what might have done. In their simulated world in which anthropogenic(人类起源的) emissions had not increased the greenhouse-gas effect, the team found that a drought did indeed still influence the western reaches of North America during the first two decades of the 21st century. But this imaginary dry spell was considerably 10.(severe) than the real one-ranking 11th rather than 2nd in the period under study (see chart).
