Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children. During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport. He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one. Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶) that had been left out on the footpath. My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend. That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way. 1.What did Rashid plan to do after his arrival in Sydney? I got married just after I graduated from college and found a job to support our family at the nearby Massachusettes Institute of Technology (MIT). It was in the laboratory of Prof. Edward Lorenz that I learned what a computer was and how to develop software. One day my husband saw a newspaper advertisement. The MIT Instrumentation Laboratory was looking for people to develop software to “send man to the moon”. Deeply attracted both by the idea and the fact that it had never been done before, I became the first programmer to join and the first woman the lab hired. At the beginning, nobody thought software was such a big deal. But then they began to realize how much they were relying on it. Our software needed to be very reliable and able to detect an error and recover from it at any time during the mission. My daughter, Lauren, liked to intimate me—playing astronaut. One day, she was with me when I was doing a simulation (模拟) of a mission to the moon. She started hitting keys and all of a sudden, she selected a program which was supposed to be run before launch. The computer had so little space that it wiped the navigation data taking her to the moon. I thought: my God—this could happen by accident in a real mission. I suggested a program change to prevent a prelaunch program being selected during flight. But the higher-ups at MIT and NASA said the astronauts were too well trained to make such a mistake. On the very next mission , Apollo 8, one of the astronauts on board accidentally did exactly what Lauren had done. The Lauren bug! It created destruction and required the mission to be rearranged. After that, they let me put the program change in. It was the program change that had a crucial influence on the success of the mission of Apollo 11. During the early days of Apollo, software was not taken as seriously as other engineering disciplines (学科).It was out of desperation I came up with the term “software engineering”. Then one day in a meeting, one of the most respected hardware experts explained to everyone that he agreed with me that the process of building software should also be considered an engineering discipline, just like with hardware. It was a memorable moment. 1.What do we know about the author? A.She taught Lauren to write software. B.She got her master's degree from MIT. C.She is the first woman ever hired by MIT. D.She created the term “software engineering”. 2.“The Lauren bug” in Para.5 refers to ______. A.a pet to accompany Lauren B.a mission to land on the moon C.a mistake causing data loss D.a software ending prelaunch 3.What greatly contributed to Apollo 11's success according to the passage? A.The in-time upload of data. B.The program change. C.Astronauts' rich experience. D.Experts' new attitude. 4.What can we learn from Margaret's story? A.Honesty is the best policy. B.A good beginning is half done. C.Two heads are better than one. D.Chances favor the prepared mind.

We often focus on building relationships with others that we forget the essential first step: being friends of ourselves. 1. How can we have good relationships with others if we don’t even have good relationships with ourselves? The problem might be worse than we expect. Maybe we don’t like ourselves without realizing it. Here is a simple checklist: Is there anything you don’t like about yourself from these lists? Your past: Maybe you have made mistakes in the past which you feel bad about. 2. Even if that happened in distant past, your subconscious(潜意识的) mind still has a reason not to like yourself. They seem to get whatever they want effortlessly because of their background. Your personal features: You might have some personality features that you don’t like. Chinese Ministry of Education (教育部) is changing its traditional policy of encouraging schools to give special admission (入学) opportunities to those students with special talents in sports, music and art, even though their grades didn’t reach the standard. The policy was flawed because some parents expose their not-so-talented child to plenty of expensive and demanding training courses in order to improve their child’s slim chances of approaching a good school. And then there was the problem of corruption (贪污腐败), which means some local officials selling the talent certificates (证书) and medals to those ambitious parents. According to a press conference held by the Ministry of Education in March, 2018, the “special talent” policy is expected to be completely called off by 2020. Although the policy is ending, it should not imply that students should give up developing their talents and interests. These extracurricular (课外的) activities may not have a direct effect on academic performance, but they are ways for students to begin building a “talent stack” that will help them in their future careers. The idea of a “talent stack” comes from the American cartoonist Scott Adams. According to Adams, people shouldn’t focus on the goal of becoming the best at something because very few people are actually the best. There are not many Michael Jordans or Albert Einsteins. Instead, people should cultivate a variety of skills that work well together. Jack Ma (马云) is a typical example of what Adams is talking about. Ma liked English and became an English teacher. He learned some business skills by operating an English language training school. He also had an interest in computers. On a visit to the United States, he discovered the internet and the way it was being used to buy and sell things. Although Ma wasn’t the best English speaker or a computer expert, he was able to “stack” them —to put them together—to learn about internet trading and then start Alibaba, the world’s largest online trading website. Although you may not realize it, you have already begun building your talent stack by learning English. If you have other interests like art and sports, you should continue to develop them. They will add to your talent stack and give you an advantage in the job market. Your unique set of skills, even if you may not be the best at any of them, may also lead you into new careers you may not have previously considered. Having a talent may no longer give students a shortcut in getting into a good school, but developing that talent will have long-term benefits as part of your “talent stack.” 1.What does the word “flawed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.perfect. B.complicated. C.imperfect. D.pointless. 2.Which of the following statements about the “talent stack” is NOT true? A.It was carried out by an American cartoonist. B.Michael Jordan and Albert Einstein has one of the best talent stacks in the world. C.Studying a foreign language is an effective way to build one’s “talent stack”. D.The power of talent stacks may be beyond your imagination. 3.Why does the author take Jack Ma’s personal experience as an example? A.To prove that Jack Ma is good at running a business. B.To show that one’s “talent stack” has nothing to do with his academic performance. C.To tell the readers that mastering English is the most efficient means to build one’s “talent stack”. D.To point out that “talent stack” can helps a person take advantage of benefits from different professional fields. 4.What can we infer(推断) from the article? A.Students with special talents will have fewer opportunities to study in good schools in two years. B.Having talents and interests doesn’t help a student’s academic performance at all. C.Developing a talent in sports, music or art is certain to cost a lot of money. D.The author holds a negative attitude towards the newly-launched policy.

It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ihan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the strange’s over-spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received. At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town! We ended up writing our IOU’s with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in a variety of ways if he needs it. I think the idea isn’t that the trade is “equal” so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate. We don’t buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don’t give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other’s company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible. Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community. 1.Ilan did not take any money that day in order to . A.have a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip B.trade for something of equal value in return C.make people aware of their over spending D.buy nothing that day to save some money 2.For the meal, the author finally offered Ilan . A.some promises B.a book C.some paintings D.work in different ways 3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “transaction”? A.transport B.trade C.meal D.giving 4.What is the author’s attitude to Buy Nothing Day? A.Disagreeable B.Meaningless. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.

Craziest Food Festivals sounds like a joke topic, but once you start looking into it, you’ll realize they’re everywhere — the crazier, the better. 1. Bibimbap Festival In the South Korean town of Jeonjuloves, their “mixed rice” dish is a hearty serve of rice topped with raw beef, a rainbow of vegetables, a raw egg and gochujang sauce so much. They take four days out of October to celebrate it. Like any festival there’s music, entertainment and magic, but making it that little bit different is the bibimbap that’s whipped (搅拌) up in a big bowl by dozens of chefs and served to over 400 people. 2. Waikiki Spam Jam Who knew this canned meat had so much love? Well, it turns out that a can of Spam is the go-to item in Hawaii, along with a grass skirt and garland (花环). The people of Hawaii love Spam so much that they even spend a day in May giving out the best Spam, a type of cheap canned meat made mainly from pork. 3. Bessieres Easter Egg Festival At Easter time, for those in the French town of Bessieres it’s all about an egg far less sweet. Here they celebrate the holiday by getting dozens of chefs to make one large omelette (煎蛋卷) — 15,000 eggs strong — for the townsfolk (市民). 4. Potato Days Festival This festival actually takes place in Barnesville, Minnesota, the US. Over the last Friday and Saturday in August the town celebrates its potato-growing skills by hosting potato picking and peeling contests, as well as a Miss Tater Tot pageant (盛典) for five- and six-year-old girls. 1.What makes Bibimbap festival special? A.They take four days to celebrate it. B.The mixed rice is rich in many vegetables. C.There’s music, entertainment and magic during the festival. D.The rice dish needs to be mixed in one big bowl by dozens of chefs together. 2.What do we know about Waikiki Spam Jam ? A.The spam is the most favorite for Hawii people. If the world followed the so-called "planetary health" diet, the scientists told Reuters that each year more than 11 million early deaths could be prevented. Scientists say that the way we produce and eat food is very bad for the planet. For the health of the planet, they claim the same diet would reduce greenhouse gases and save more land, water and animals. Tim Lang, a professor at Britain's University of London, co-led the research. He told Reuters, "The food we eat and how we produce it determines change what we eat and the way we eat by "improving food production and reducing food waste." Well, what do you eat on the planetary health diet? The scientists who created this diet say it is largely plant-based but still has small amounts of dairy, fish and meat. The diet calls for cutting red meat and sugar by 50 percent and doubling the amount of nuts, fruits, vegetables and legumes. Food situations around the world are not equal. In certain areas, this would mean great changes. People in North America, for example, eat 6.5 times the recommended amount of red meat. On the other hand, people in South Asia eat only half the amount suggested by the new planetary health diet. Meeting the targets for vegetables would need big changes in other areas. In sub-Saharan Africa, people on average eat 7.5 times the suggested amount of vegetables like potatoes and cassava. The scientists admit their goal will be difficult to achieve. But for them doing nothing is also not an option. Willet said, "If we can't quite make it, it's better to try and get as close as we can." _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Interpersonal communication skills are those which you need every day in your life – be it in your personal or professional life. They are some of the most important skills as large percentage of your personal life involves interacting with people. 1.Here are some tips to help you be an excellent interpersonal communicator: 2.As the saying goes, ‘the first impression is the last impression’, hence you should be careful when it comes to body language. It is said that a typical communication consists of more than 50% non-verbal communication, which includes body language. So if your body language is sending negative signals to the other person, the communication will probably break down in the process. Think before you speak. 3.That means you should try to connect with the feelings of the other person in order to show that you care about the conversation between the two of you. Listen well. The ability to listen to what a person is saying is a skill and you should focus on that while communicating with others. If you have good listening skills you will be able to understand that person’s words more clearly and react in a positive manner.4. Be open to receiving feedback (反馈). Sometimes it is good to step back to receive feedback.5.You should be able to open up to feedback from the other person and give honest feedback whenever you feel it is needed. A.Show positive body language. B.Communicate with others kindly. C.You should always be confident of what you are speaking. D.Communication is a two-way process and should remain like that. E.Interpersonal skills also play an important part in your career development. F.You should consider how your words affect the person before making any comments. G.It will also send a signal to the other person that you care about what he or she has to say.
The Kirtland’s warbler(莺)has required protections since the foundation of Endangered Species Act (ESA), but that’s about to change. The Fish and Wildlife Service(FWS)today announced it is removing the songbird from the endangered species list “The effort to recover the Kirtland's warbler is a successful example of how to save endangered species,” said Margaret Everson, director of FWS. “The Kirtland's warbler has responded well to active management over the half century.” In 1971, the Kirtland’s warbler population declined to approximately 201 singing males and was restricted to six counties. By 2015, the population reached 2,383 singing males and had spread geographically. FWS noted the frequent and persistent singing of male warblers during the breeding season made counting possible. “The primary threats identified at listing and during development of the recovery plan have been managed,” said FWS. Modern wildfire suppression(扑灭)practices greatly altered the natural disturbance system, which enabled the growth of the jack pine forests favored by the species, FWS noted. Michigan state has replanted approximately 90,000 acres of Kirtland's warbler habitat over the past 30 years. Timber (木材)incomes offset the cost of replanting jack pine needed to support a survivable bird population. But while the bird is falling off the ESA list, officials note that it remains a “conservation-dependent species." Conservation of the Kirtland's warbler will continue to require a harmonious approach for carrying out future conservation work, like partnerships and sufficient funding, FWS stated. Under the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the Kirtland's warbler was federally listed as an endangered species in 1967. “This remarkable bird has a most impressive, exemplary success story that illustrates effective conservation and cooperation at work,” added Heather Good, executive director of Michigan Audubon. Shawn Graff, vice president of American Bird Conservancy's Great Lakes program, pointed out the delisting (除名)is “cause for celebration and proof that the Endangered Species Act works.” 1.The passage is probably taken from_____. A.a science fiction B.a news report C.a biography D.a novel 2.What does the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Make up for. B.Add to. C.Fix. D.Estimate. 3.Which of the following is NOT the reason for the recovery of Kirtland’s warbler? A.Ample funding. B.Cooperative work. C.The foundation of FWS. D.The control of wildfire. 4.What can be concluded from the passage? A.The male Kirtland's warblers seldom sing in the breeding season. B.Heather Good was not very satisfied with the conservation work. C.The Kirtland's warbler was listed as an endangered species only in one state. D.Margaret Everson thought highly of the conservation of the Kirtland's warbler.
When you start working on something but don't finish it, thoughts of the unfinished work continue to jump into your mind even when you've moved on to other things. Psychologists refer the phenomenon as the Zeigamik effect. The effect was first observed by a Russian psychologist named Bluma Zeigamik. While sitting in a busy restaurant in Vienna, she noted the waiters had better memories of unpaid orders. Once the bill was paid, however, the waiters had difficulty remembering the exact details of the orders. In one of her studies, participants were asked to complete simple tasks such as putting together puzzles, or solving math problems. Half of the participants were interrupted halfway through these tasks. After an hour-long delay, Zeigamik asked the participants to give an account of what they'd been working on. She discovered that those who had their work interrupted were twice as likely to remember what they had been doing as those who had actually completed the tasks. We can use this effect to our advantage. For example, if you're struggling to memorize something important, momentary interruptions might actually work to your advantage. Rather than simply remember the information over and over again, review it several times and then take a break. While you're focusing on other things, you'll find yourself mentally returning to the information you were studying. We often put off tasks until the last moment, only completing them in a rush at the last possible moment. Unfortunately, this tendency can lead to heavy stress and even poor performance. One way to overcome this is to put the Zeigamik effect to work. Start by taking the first step, no matter how small. Once you have begun — but not finished — your work, you'll find yourself thinking of the task until, at last, you finish it. You might not finish it all at once, but each small step you take puts you closer to your final goal. 1.What does the Zeigamik effect refer to? A.Waiters tend to have good memories. B.Once interrupted, one will forget things easily. C.Most people can't focus on one thing for a long time. D.People remember unfinished tasks better than completed ones. 2.How should we study according to the Zeigamik effect? A.Repeat over and over again. B.Divide our study session. C.Focus on several tasks at a time. D.Have enough rest before studying. 3.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph? A.How to get rid of heavy stress. B.Why we should set a final goal. C.How to break the habit of delaying work. D.Why we always complete tasks in a rush.
Downey's mother spent one year studying abroad through an international exchange program with a French school. She often talked about how exciting and interesting the experience was. So, even before finishing high school, Downey had decided to follow suit one day. Downey began studying architecture at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 2004. Near the end of her second year, she started to feel unhappy with her school and decided it was time to study abroad. U. S. colleges and universities commonly have joint programs with foreign schools that permit student exchanges. These programs usually last half a school year or sometimes a whole school year. The classes students take abroad usually give them credits toward their degree. In a fouryear degree program, the third year is the most common time for American college students to study abroad. Many students think they need a change before what is usually their final and most difficult year of study. Downey said her school did not want her to go at first. The architecture program at Lehigh was very intense, and her professors were worried she might miss learning important material. However, she was eventually able to get special permission to study internationally for a whole year. During the fall term in 2006, she attended a Danish international school in Copenhagen, Denmark, explaining she did so because Danish architects are well known for their housing design. Young adult as she was, she had to deal with travel documents and many other issues (问题) on her own. Overcoming the language barrier is the biggest challenge of studying abroad. However, she had a lot of emotional (情感的) and financial support from her family. She learned life lessons and made friendships and memories that have lasted to this day. She said, “The more you're out of your comfort zone, the more rewarding the experience is in the end.” 1.What does Downey's mother mean to Downey? A.A friend. B.A dreamer. C.An example. D.An expert. 2.What made Downey choose the Danish international school? A.The famous learned professors. B.The casual learning environment. C.The impressive academic reputation. D.The favorable geographical location. 3.What can we infer according to the last paragraph? A.It was not easy for Downey to study abroad. B.The comfortable life is likely to ruin the future life. C.Downey was too young to take care of herself. D.Downey's parents could hardly afford her education.
