LEGO (乐高) recently announced that they will start producing pieces from sustainable (可持续的) sugar cane. The toys, which will be closely similar to classic ones, will also feature “botanical elements” like leaves, bushes, and trees.

The pieces will be included in LEGO’S box sets from this year onwards. The move is part of the Danish company’s campaign to use sustainable materials in its products by 2030.

However, Tim Brooks, the firm’s vice-president, said, “We want to make a positive influence on the world around us, and are working hard to make great play products for children using sustainable materials. This is a great first step in our goal to make all LEGO pieces using sustainable materials.”

The new line of production has reportedly already started with pieces being produced from polyethylene, which is a soft and durable plastic (耐用的塑料). LEGO says that we needn’t worry about the quality of the new products, as they’ve tested the plant-based plastic to ensure that it meets the high standards for quality and safety that consumers (消费者) expect from the company.

“LEGO products have always been about providing high quality play experiences and giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play. Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new pieces, because plant-based polyethylene has the same qualities as traditional polyethylene,” said Tim Brooks.

“It is important that companies in each industry find ways to help ensure a future where people, nature, and the economy grow healthily,” said Alix Grabowski, an officer at WWF. “The LEGO Group’s decision to use sustainable plastics represents a great opportunity to reduce dependence on finite (有限的) resources, and their work with the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance will allow them to connect with other companies to continue to think creatively about sustainability.”

In the fall of 1988, I visited many Buddhist temples, but after a while they all began to fade from my memories. However, there was one temple that left a great impression in my heart.

It is called the Temple of the Golden Buddha. After walking around it and taking some photos, I walked over to a glass case, next to which was a typewritten page describing the history of this magnificent piece of art.

Back in 1957 a group of monks from a monastery(修道院) had to relocate a clay Buddha from their temple to a new location. The monastery was to be relocated to make room for the development of a highway. When the crane(吊车)began to lift it, the weight of was so large that it began to crack. What’s more, rain began to fall, The head monk decided to lower the statue back to the ground and cover it with a large oilcloth to protect it from the rain.

Later that evening the head monk went to check on the Buddha. He shined his flash- light under the oilcloth to see if the Buddha was staying dry. As the light reached the crack, he noticed a little beam shining back and thought it strange. As he took a closer look at this beam of light, he wondered if there might be something underneath the clay. He went to fetch a chisel and hammer from the monastery and began to chip away at the clay. As he knocked off pieces of clay, the little beam grew brighter and bigger. Many hours of labor went by before the monk stood face to face with the extraordinary solid-gold Buddha.

Historians believe that several hundred years before the head monk’s discovery, the army was about to invade the country. The monks, realizing that their country would soon be attacked, covered their precious golden Buddha with an outer covering of clay in order to keep their treasure from being robbed by the enemy.

Unfortunately, it appears that the enemy killed all the monks, and the well-kept secret of the golden Buddha remained uncovered until the day in 1957.

As I flew home I began to think to myself, “We are all like the clay Buddha covered with a shell of hardness created out of fear, and yet underneath each of us is a ‘golden Buddha’, agolden Christ, or a ‘golden spirit,’ which is our real self. Somewhere along the way, between the ages of two and nine, we begin to cover up our’ golden spirit,’ our natural self. Much like the monk with the hammer and the chisel, our task now is to discover our true spirit once again.”

1.What made the monks cover the Buddha with a large oilcloth?

A.Hiding it from being stolen.

B.Protecting it from the rain.

C.Protecting it from being damaged.

D.Avoiding being seen.

2.Why was the author greatly impressed by the golden Buddha?

A.Because he likes it very much.

B.Because it differs from others.

C.Because of its history.

D.Because of the protection of the monk.

3.What might be the best title of the passage?

A.Visiting Buddhist Temples

B.The Golden Buddha

C.Protecting Their Country

D.Relocating the Buddha

4.What advice is given to us according to the passage?

A.Covering up ourselves.

B.Finding the truth.

C.Discovering our true spirit.

D.Building up our belief.

I was exciting and nervous to start a new adventure abroad. Therefore, the excitement started to fade after small number of weeks. Homesickness started to be set in, But I started to change after meeting some new friends and have a good time with them. We shared our view on many things, ate together and visited new places as a group. I suppose we should never forgot how important it is to have good people in their life. They can make such a different. To travel and visit other places is one of the best things you can do in life. My advice from my experience are to travel and try new things whenever you get the opportunity.

Have you ever gotten the feeling that a person you were friends with had a hidden schedule or simply couldn't care about your thoughts and opinions? Trying to tell the difference between someone who is genuine and someone who is faking (虚伪) it can be as confusing as trying to tell the difference between a work of art and a well-made copy.1. Read the advice of the following signs of fake people to determine which of your relationships is worth seriously investing in.

They only respect those in positions of power. When it comes to respect, most would agree that everyone is deserving of this sentiment. Yet, fake people have a tendency to only respect people in power. Watch out for people who aren't respectful of everyone around them.2.

3. Only those who lack real quality feel the need to criticize others to keep up appearances. Sincere individuals would rather admire and praise others, while fakers may be quick to put others down in name of making themselves look better.

They make promises they can't keep. A genuine person will do their best to live up to promises and commitments, but a fake person may talk the talk without walking the walk.4.

They're only nice if there's something in it for them.5. In comparison, genuine people are just that genuine. They're nice and helpful no matter what circumstances.

Keep an eye out for these signs of fake people and make room for more meaningful, genuine relationships in your life.

A.If not, they may be faking it.

B.They work hard to build any relationship.

C.They put others down in order to look good.

D.But thanks to some advice, the former doesn't have to be.

E.In comparison, a genuine person knows when to let others shine.

F.A fake person is one who only shows kindness when it benefits them.

G.Fake people easily make commitments, but rarely follow through on them.

Food companies engineer junk food to make it addictive. They label their products to make them seem much healthier than they are. Their advertisements target children. All of this is according to a news report read recently by students in a Texas middle school. They were taking part in an experiment run by the University of Chicago and the University of Texas. “I don't understand how this is even legal, ” said a girl who took part in the study.

Researchers had students learn about food-industry advertising strategies. They wanted to know if learning about them would change how kids feel about junk food. All over the world, kids are eating more foods that are high in salt, sugar, and fat. That is partly the result of clever ads that make junk food irresistible. Christopher J. Bryan led the study. He says that when kids question the motives behind junk food ads, they feel like they're fighting injustice. The reward is knowing they are doing the right thing.

Junk food has been linked to health problems such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetesBut in 2018food companies spent nearly $9 billion TV ads selling unhealthy fare. Companies use varying strategies. An ad with cartoon characters may make chips seen fun to eat. A professional athlete enjoying a sugary drink may make it look cool. Advertisers                know that if kids want a product, they'll annoy their parents to buy it. Even parents don't notice the power of ads. By the time they are adults they have been used to junk-food advertising. They just don't see it.

In the Texas study, Bryan had students view ads on iPad. Their job was to write or draw on the screen, to make each ad's message true. For example, a McDonald's ad showed a Big Mac (巨无霸) and the words “The thing you want when you order salad. ” To the end of the sentence, a student added “should be salad”.

Three months after analyzing ads, students were still choosing healthier snacks: milk instead of sugary juices, fruit over cookies. Kids are becoming conscious of themselves as agents in the world. They see a chance to make the world a better place.

1.What is the purpose of the experiment?

A.To survey what snacks children like best. B.To guide children against unhealthy food.

C.To find ways to make junk food healthy. D.To teach children how to pick out legal food.

2.How do children feel about junk food advertisements after the experiment?

A.Cool. B.Legal.

C.Funny. D.Misleading.

3.Why are parents unaware of the harm of junk food advertisements?

A.Parents have never seen such junk food advertisements.

B.Advertisements have blinded them since they were young.

C.The food industry has special advertising strategies for parents.

D.Parents have to agree with their children about the junk food.

4.How did students conduct the experiment?

A.By correcting unreal advertisements. B.By offering suggestions to food industry.

C.By making up their own advertisements. D.By studying food industry advertising strategies.

In today's world, most workers are highly specialized, but this specialization can come at a cost——especially for those on the wrong team. New research by Harvard's Growth Lab uncovers the importance of teams and coworkers when it comes to one's productivity, earning potential, and stays of employment. The research analyzed administrative data on the 9 million inhabitants of Sweden. It found that to earn high wages and returns on education, workers must find coworkers who complement, but not substitute them.

The research offers a tool to assess the right and wrong coworkers in fields of expertise. The right coworkers are those with sills you lack, yet needed to complete a team. The wrong coworkers are those who have the same skill set as you and eventually lower your value to the employer. For example, those with a degree in architecture are best assisted by workers with engineering, construction, or surveying degrees, and negatively impacted by those with landscape or interior design degrees.

“We tend to think of sills as something personal that individuals can market to a company, ” said Frank Neffke, Growth Lab Research Director “However, this vision of sills is too simplistic. One person's sills connect to another person's sills, etc. ,and the better these connections are, the more productive workers will be, and the more they will earn” Neffke adds that the benefits of working with complementary coworkers are not the same for all workers. Those with higher levels of education seem to benefit much more from working in complementary teams than workers with lower levels. Over the past 20 years, workers with college degrees or higher have been increasingly able to find better matching coworkers.

Complementary also drives careers. The research shows that people tend to stay longer in organizations with many complementary workers and tend to leave those with many workers who substitute them. These results hold true for up to 20 years of one's career.

The research also supports several well-known facts, such as cities and large firms pay higher wages. Workers are more likely to find better fitting teams in cities, and large firms often allow workers to specialize.

1.Which group of workers can make up the best team?

A.Those who can substitute each other. B.Those who come from the same place.

C.Those who are expert in the same field. D.Those who have the complementary sill

2.Who may be the best complementary coworker for an architect?

A.A landscaper. B.A house agent.

C.A constructor. D.Another architect.

3.Employers think more of their staff’s________.

A.dependence relationship B.struggling spirit

C.physical quality D.educational level

4.What can be the best title of the text?

A.What workers your employer need most

B.How coworkers impact the value of your skills

C.How coworkers get higher wages and a long-term job

D.How complementarity improves your mental potential

A year ago I lost my wonderful friend and colleague Rachael Bland. She died at the age of just 40, two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her death knocked me for six. I knew it was coming and we had talked about it—but nothing prepared me for actually not having her in my life every day. The thing was, while we only knew each other for a short period of time, she had a huge impact on me. When I got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, I made a whole new group of friends. Rachael was up there with the best of them. She understood exactly what I was going through, she shared my fears and was always there at 3 am to reassure me. She was my rock.

After Rachael died, I had a nervous breakdown. I hit numerous brick walls in the weeks and months that followed. My cancer was progressing and I fell into a dark place. I pushed it away but ignored the terror of it all and inevitably it all came crashing down around me. Great Sorrow hit me when I least expected. Her death felt like a bad dream. The emotional bit aside, one of the things I found really hard was to actually accept she died.

Rachael hoped that by starting the conversation around cancer, she could help other women avoid getting cancer too. It was her absolute determination and bravery at helping to break down taboos (禁忌) that will live on for generations to come.

Rachael showed me how to live with cancer. Even in her darkest days she was determined to show that cancer didn’t get to take over. She helped remind me to get busy living with cancer rather than worry about dying of it. She was in the bottom of my heart forever.

1.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.I was beaten six times.

B.Her death gave me the strength.

C.She was knocked down and died.

D.Her death made me very shocked.

2.Why did the author hit the brick walls?

A.She wanted to end up her life.

B.She couldn’t stand the pain of cancer.

C.She had been suffering from nightmares.

D.She was too sorrowful to accept Rachael’s death.

3.What is Rachael’s wish?

A.To help women fight against fear.

B.To assess women’s conversational skills.

C.To prevent other women from getting cancer.

D.To inspire sick people to hope for their future.

4.Which of the following best describes Rachael?

A.Optimistic. B.Weak.

C.Humorous. D.Demanding.

As they say, age is just a number. 1. To cope well with the changes, you have to develop good habits in caring and maintaining your body’s health and youth. Adopting these simple yet noteworthy habits should be done in order to attain healthy and graceful aging.

Stay positive. 2. A study reveals that those people who think of age as wisdom and overall satisfaction could recover better from a disability than those who view aging as uselessness and helplessness.

3. Practicing good eating habits should start early in life to accustom yourself from different kinds of food served on the table. As you age, the body keeps on changing; thus, nutrition is vital in delaying the aging process. Your plate should have the following nutrients to maintain balance. Low-glycemic diet high in fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and lean protein is the healthiest. A research reports that eating plant-based food, whole grains, nuts as well as eating fish twice each week and reducing salt intake may help you age better. It wards off risks of heart attacks, strokes and premature aging. On the contrary, too much sugar, carbohydrates and fatty food can accelerate aging process. 4.

Moderation is the key. Anything in excess is bad for the health. 5. In order to age better and live longer, it is recommended to stick to a balanced diet that consists of 2 1/2 cups of vegetables, 1 1/2 to 2 cups of fruit, six ounces of grains, three cups of dairy and five ounces of protein each day.

A.Eat right.

B.Keep nutritious.

C.Optimism is the key to cope well with aging.

D.So take it slow on indulging in these kinds of food.

E.As you grow old, changes occur to varied parts of your body.

F.Avoid overeating as it leads you to a shorter life span, heart diseases, and type 2 diabetes.

G.When you are aging, different parts of your body will become weaker and weaker.

The Austrian capital, Vienna, has beaten Australia’s Melbourne to be named the world’s most livable city of 2018.It’s the first time a European city has topped the first of the Economist Intelligence Unit(EIU)annual survey.

The worldwide league table ranks 140 cities on a range of factors, including political and social stability, crime, education and access to healthcare.

In the survey, Manchester saw the biggest improvement of any. European city, rising by 16 places to rank 35th. Manchester’s rise puts it ahead of London in the rank by 13 places, the widest gap between the two cities since the survey began two decades ago. The EIU said Manchester’s jump in the rankings was due to an improved security score.

The survey was criticized last year for demoting(降级)Manchester after the Manchester Arena attack which killed 22 victims. This year, survey editor Roxana Slavcheva said Manchester had shown resilience(恢复力)in the city’s recovery from a recent terrorist attack, which previously shook up stability.

Ms.Slavcheva said security had also improved in several western European cities and Vienna’s top place in the rankings reflected a relative return to stability across much of Europe, According to the survey, nearly half of the cities have seen their livability ranking improve over the past year.

Melbourne, ranked second in this year’s global rankings, had previously come top for seven years running. Two other Australian cities also made this year’s top ten: Sydney and Adelaide.

At the other end of the scale, war-torn Damascus in Syria was ranked the least livable city, closely followed by Dhaka in Bangladesh and Lagos in Nigeria. The EIU said that crime, civil unrest, terrorism or war played a “strong role” in the ten-lowest scoring cities.

A new study found the greater the improvement in people’s handwashing habits at airports, the more noticeable the effect on slowing the infectious (传染的) diseases, including the flu. The findings were published in late December, 2019, just before the recent coronavirus (冠状病毒) outbreak, but the study' s authors say that its results would apply to any such disease and are relevant to the present outbreak.

People can be surprisingly casual about washing their hands, even in crowded locations like airports where people from many different locations are touching surfaces such as chair armrests, check-in entrances, security checkpoint trays, and restroom doorknobs and taps. On average, only about 20 percent of people at airports have clean hands. The others are potentially polluting everything they touch with whatever infections they may be carrying.

Improving handwashing at all of the world's airports to be three times that rate, so that 60 percent of travelers have clean hands at any given time, would have the greatest effect, potentially slowing global disease spread by almost 70 percent, the researchers found. Adopting such measures at so many airports and reaching such a high level of obedience may be impractical, but the new study suggests that it could potentially be accomplished through education, posters, public announcements, and perhaps improving access to handwashing facilities. It could slow the global rate of the spread of a disease by about 24 percent, they found.

The findings are consistent with recommendations made by both the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. Both have indicated that hand hygiene (卫生) is the most efficient and cost-effective way to control disease spread. While both organizations say that other measures can also play a useful role in limiting disease spread, such as use of surgical face masks, airport closures, and travel limitations, hand hygiene is still the first line of defense-and an easy one for individuals to implement.

1.What is most people’s attitude to handwashing?

A.Favorable. B.Careless.

C.Doubtful. D.Cautious.

2.What did the study suggest on increasing handwashing rate at airports?

A.Establishing higher hygiene standards.

B.Making handwashing fun and enjoyable.

C.Passing special laws to require handwashing.

D.Raising people's awareness of handwashing.

3.Why does the author mention the World Health Organization?

A.To introduce other measures.

B.To stress the importance of it.

C.To tell who carried out the study.

D.To make the study results more convincing.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.People have many good habits at airports.

C.New coronavirus is breaking out.

D.There is great improvement in handwashing.

When students walk into Jenny Umland's class, they don't automatically go to the same seat they sat in the day before. In her classroom at Riverdale Heights Elementary School,  Lowenstein’s are allowed to sit wherever they want. Umland doesn't assign seats. In fact, she has done away with most of the regular desks and uses beach chairs, standing desks, and rocking chairs instead.

Riverdale Heights is one of a growing number of schools that have ditched assigned seats. Many teachers say letting kids choose where to sit helps them learn how to make good choices. Some teachers point out that students are often more comfortable speaking up when they're sitting near kids, they like the most.

“If kids are happy and comfortable, they are more willing to learn,” says Umland. After 19 years of teaching, she tried non-assigned seating for the first time this year. She says she'll never go back.

But not all teachers are ready to do away with their seating charts. Some say having assigned seats helps students focus on their work, instead of where they'll sit. One teacher from  Texas thinks letting students sit wherever they want can create chaos. Assigned seating helps keep classrooms under control. Without specific seats to go to, students may argue over who gets to sit in the best spots. He often finds it hard to work in that environment. A more controlled classroom leads to better learning. Maybe what he says is reasonable. A 2012 study by Montana State University found that high school students did better on tests when a teacher assigned their seats.

A student, Jack, from Lowa, thinks he and his classmates should be comfortable when they learn. He says, “My teacher, Mrs. Umland, allows us to choose our own seats, and it's great! I used to be terrified of sitting in the same seat every day, which made me uncomfortable all over. Being allowed to sit wherever I want makes me more enjoyable, because I can sit where I'm most comfortably.” And Umland says, “The setup in my class helps kids get along better. If two students want to sit in the same spot, they have to talk it out and compromise”.

1.What do we know about Umland?

A.She insists on arranging regular desks.

B.She is strongly against non-assigned seating.

C.She has failed in teaching in the past 19 years.

D.She lets students in her class choose their own seats.

2.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “ditched” in paragraph 2?

A.tried on B.looked forward to

C.got rid of D.prepared for

3.What does Jack think of the Umland's seat setup in her class?

A.It is cozy. B.It is terrifying.

C.It is controversial. D.It is uncomfortable.

4.What's the best title for the text?

A.What Role Do Students Play in Class?

B.Should Students Have Assigned Seats?

C.Students Are Required to Listen Carefully in Class

D.Assigned Seats in the Classroom Are Popular Now

Eggs are great for breakfast and can1.(cook) in different ways. One topic of debate, however, is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones. According to Sharman Hickman, the director of community outreach and education for Hickman's Family Farms, it's first important to know the reason2.chickens have various egg colors.

The chicken breed(品种) and their genetics decide whether hens possess pigment genes, the natural chemical during the egg laying process that coats the egg and results3.a colored shell. Hens who produce colored eggshells tend to be4.(large) and require more feed and energy5.(create) that painted layer. Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs6.(be) more expensive.

Although eggs sometimes look and are priced7.(different) , it's important to know the color of the eggshell is related to the breed of the hen, not the egg's nutrient content, flavor profile,8.shell thickness, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “9.(choose) between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal10.(prefer) ,” she says. Whatever you prefer, don't judge an egg by its shell color.

Let's face it: The last hour of anyone's workday is not always fruitful. As the hours of peak productivity start to decline, most people begin watching the clock, waiting for nothing.1.“How positively you end your professional day can promote success both inside and outside of the office,” says Randi Levin, a transitional life strategist. Let's see how successful people end their workday with a bang.

Successful people reflect on their accomplishments. While many of us spend our last hour of work making a to-do list for tomorrow, they review the day they just had, instead.2.Similarly, Levin recommends writing down the day's wins rather than setbacks or to-dos, as well as reviewing your list of successes once a month. It will prove your professional growth and bring more joy into your job.

Also, successful people brainstorm solutions for today's setbacks.3.Instead, they end their day by thinking carefully about the problems they met, brainstorming possible solutions, and then leaving it for tomorrow. They will settle those problems after a good night's sleep.

4.Rather than detailing the tasks that need to get done, this kind of list encourages people to focus on finding solutions for their projects. “Forget the horrible 'to-do' list,” Levin says, “before heading to happy hour, write down three to five goals you have for the next 24 hours.5.It will provide you with not only a concrete and positive way to begin tomorrow, but also it will allow you to see much more possibilities.”

A.This list is a promise to yourself.

B.Successful people make a to-do list.

C.It will make people understand the problems better.

D.They never bring the day's failures home with them.

E.Another work these people do is to create an action list.

F.But ending the workday with purpose can make a difference.

G.They typically choose a case and consider what led to that success.

We've all spent time in a hospital, whether through medical issues of our own or those of a loved one. And while we're used to seeing the doctors hurry in and out of the room, displaying varying degrees of attention, it's the constant and reliable presence of the nursing staff and their professionalism that gives the most confidence and relief to those in the room.

So, while doctors and surgeons tend to get most spotlight, nurses are really at the forefront of patient care. They are often called upon to make important, life-saving decisions multiple times a day and work closely with doctors to analyze records and test results to advise on treatment. It's the nurses that are frequently responsible for identifying a condition and matching the right specialist doctor to a patient, and it's the nurses that are often the first on the scene to treat people in an emergency.

A career in Nursing brings job security, a good wage, career mobility, and chance to decide your own career path. You can work part or full time according to your preference. You can be flexible on work location and specialism. If a particular area interests you, you can explore that as there will always be the need for quality nurses across the medical spectrum(医学光谱)with a passion for their work. Jobs in the field are in high demand, with significant opportunities to learn, grow and reach senior leadership positions. However, if you want to undertake a career in Nursing, a good education is compulsory.

The University of Texas at El Paso School of Nursing offers high quality and affordable undergraduate and graduate programs reinforced by talented faculty(全体教师), strong clinical partnerships and advanced simulation(模拟)technology. Students do gain much real experience before working in a hospital. Adelphi's College of Nursing and Public Health provides students with a top-rated, comprehensive education grounded in practice, theory and creativity. They are devoted to transforming students' lives through small classes with world-class faculty, hands-on learning and creative ways to support academic and career success. The Wayne State University College of Nursing, attaching special importance to first-hand experience, is dedicated to providing the highest quality education to a diverse population of graduate students. Graduates from the college are prepared to be nurse leaders in research, education and practice.

On my fourth day in a self-driving car, I finally felt comfortable enough to let it stop itself. Before then, I'd allowed the car-a Volvo S90 sedan-to control the direction, with my hands still on the wheel, and to adjust speed in traffic. By Day 4, I was ready to make a jump into the future.

With the car traveling on a busy road, I activated the driverless mode. Soon, a traffic light turned red. For a split second, I prepared to get on the brakes. There was no need. The cameras and computers in the Volvo recognized the traffic conditions and smoothly began applying the brake.

If you're anything like most people, you're familiar with this anxiety. Almost 80 percent of Americans fear traveling in a self-driving car, a recent survey found.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have conducted some clever experiments studying the phenomenon. They asked participants to complete tasks and compare their performance with a computer system's. After the computer made a mistake, people were unwilling to use it again. After the people made mistakes, their self-confidence wouldn't change. It didn't matter that the human beings made more mistakes than the computer. So it is with driving. More than 37,000 Americans died in crashes last year, most from human error. The death count from cars goes beyond that from guns. So if you are shocked and angry by guns and want things to change, you should feel the same about car crashes.

Technology creates an opportunity to save lives. Computers don't get drunk or distracted by text messages, and they don't have blind spots. Just look at commercial airlines: Automation has helped all but get rid of deadly crashes among American air carriers. The last one happened in 2009.

The technology for self-driving cars still isn't good enough. But it is improving rapidly. Within a few years, many cars will have advanced crash-avoidance systems and driving will be revolutionized sooner than many people now understand.

1.How does the author introduce the topic?

A.By offering a piece of news. B.By giving background information.

C.By describing an experience. D.By introducing a latest car.

2.What can be learnt about the participants of the experiments?

A.They tended to accept the computer's faults.

B.They seemed to care little about their own mistakes.

C.They felt less confident after making mistakes.

D.They performed better than computer systems.

3.The author mentioned commercial airlines___________.

A.to prove the advantage of technology B.to assess the security of driverless cars

C.to find fault with computers D.to advertise for the commercial airlines

4.What does the author expect of the self-driving car?

A.I'll avoid deadly crashes entirely. B.It'll occupy the market in a short time.

C.It'll be bettered in every possible way. D.It'll be popularized sooner than expected.

When I sent my daughter, Emma, off for her freshman year of college a few years ago, I found myself affected by an unbelievable feeling of melancholy. Clearly, I'm not alone. Just last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that more than 90 percent of colleges offer to help moms and dads who are “struggling with the change.”

Between Thanksgiving, winter holiday, spring break and summer break, the first one out of my nest has come fluttering back home nearly every month of the year since she has been away. Good friends like to joke that they see more of her now than they did when she was a senior in high school. In the meantime, Emma calls, texts or e-mails me almost every day.

Given all this, missing Emma seems kind of sillyI've never really gotten the chance. So why, then, have I still felt on some level that I've experienced a great loss?

All summer long before Emma left that first year, I took Emma out for countless mother-daughter breakfasts, lunches, coffees and walks. At the same time, I seemed to find fault with Emma all the time. In my eyes, Emma had spent the weeks leading up to school going out with her friends too much, staying out way too late, making too big a mess, not working enough and, for goodness sake, certainly not spending enough time with me!

Although it's taken quite a while to realize what was happening, I now understand that my unhappiness and anxiety are not a reflection of how much time Emma and I spend together. Regardless of how often she comes home, or how many times a day we chat or text, Emma is now gone in a far grander sense. She is well on the road to adulthood, and from this, she will never return.

1.What does the underlined word “melancholy” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Fierce anger. B.Deep sadness.

C.Extreme excitement. D.Great satisfaction.

Large rainforests are extremely important ecosystems on our planet. They are home to a large number of animal and plant species, and they absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide, which helps reduce global warming. These biggest ones in the world are a sight to observe.

Daintree Rainforest

The main river of the rainforest is the Daintree River, and it also includes the Daintree National Park. If you are wondering why everything seems to share the name, the reason is simple-Richard Daintree was a famous Australian geologist and photographer. Plenty of options will take you there, including a ferry.

Valdivian Temperate Rainforest

This rainforest is known to be extremely foggy and humid, but some interesting species live there. Since it is on the coast, you can witness ice sheets and glaciers as well. Getting to the rainforest is most accessible from Santiago, the capital of Chile, and a train ride or a bus is a preferred option.

Congo Rainforest

This rainforest also features a large number of different plant and animal species, including gorillas, forest elephants, and lions. Visiting this rainforest is also recommended by using a tour company, preferably by finding one in the Republic of Congo.

Amazon Rainforest

It is estimated that we can find 16,000 different tree species in the Amazon rainforest.

When it comes to other plants, animals, and insects, the numbers are even more impressive. The especially interesting thing is that there is still a large number of undiscovered species. A tour guide is advised since going through the rainforest can be dangerous, with predatory creatures(食肉动物)running around.

1.Which of the following is named after a person?
