Sometimes 1 feel that living in a city makes people lonely than before. People always feel strangers cannot trusted. They think this is not normal to start talking to anyone or even smile at anyone. I desire to change that. Last week, while I was skate, a man ran by, smiling at me. He said something to me about doing sports or he hoped to be able to finishing his run. I smiled back and said that he certain would. And then a family cycles by when I was in the park. One of the girl waved at me with a big smile, and I waved back enthusiastically. I do believe such small gestures can change into the world we live in.

Using modern technology, archaeologists (考古学家) have recently discovered about 200 Mayan artifacts (玛雅古器) in Mexico, which surprisingly, appear to have been untouched for up to 1,000 years. The artifacts were found inside a cave in ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

The lead researcher on the project is Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda. He called the cave a “scientific treasure”.

The findings included bone pieces and burnt offering materials. In addition, incense burners, vases, plates and other objects were discovered. Some items included the portrait of Tlaloc, the rain god of central Mexico.

The cave where the objects were found is so unique. It is part of a cave system known as Balamku. The cave is long, narrow and dark. It is about three kilometers east of the main pyramid of Kukulkan. It sits at the center of Chichen Itza which is the stone city described by the United Nations as “one of the greatest Mayan centers of the Yucatan Peninsula.”

The cave sits about 24 meters underground, with areas connected by passages. Some of the passages were so narrow that researchers had to climb in or pull themselves through. The team has so far explored about 460 meters of the cave, and is unsure how far it stretches. The team plans to continue exploring the cave. The found artifacts will not be removed, but studied inside.

The team accidentally found the artifacts while exploring Chichen Itza in an effort to learn more about its underground water system. The new discovery will help scientists better understand the history, culture, lives and beliefs of people who lived in Chichen Itza, especially in the boom years.

Archaeologists believe there may be another cave hidden under the pyramid of Kukulkan that could be connected to the latest find. “Let’s hope God will lead us there,” Guillermo de Anda said. “That is part of the reason why we are entering these sites to find a connection to the natural well under the Kukulkan.”

A.The long history and perfect state.

B.The digging time and location.

C.The current high price.

D.The variety of usage.

2.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The features of the cave. B.The findings in the cave.

C.The ancient cave system. D.The origin of Mayan centers.

3.What is the significance of the new discovery?

A.It can help scientists register cultural relics.

B.It can encourage archaeologists to form work beliefs.

C.It can help scientists further learn about Mayan civilization.

D.It can arouse the interest of Mexicans in archaeology.

4.What will archaeologists do next according to the last paragraph?

A.Dig wells under the Kukulkan.

B.Move the findings to another cave.

C.Find the cause of groundwater disappearance.

D.Try to find another cave under the pyramid of Kukulkan.

Back when the Mississippi River flowed wild, its ever-changing waters moved soil across the North American continent. It picked up sand and dirt in the north and brought it to the southern areas of what we now call the state of Louisiana. Thousands of years later, man-made barriers called levees (防洪堤) and flood-control systems control the powerful river. But Louisiana officials are making plans to use the Mississippi River’s ancient power to build new land as a way to ease the threat of rising seas.

Engineers hope to remake the destroyed low-lying lands by copying nature—digging into the levees and redirecting the water. The water holds a lot of small dirt sediments (沉淀物). The sediments can flow into coastal basins.

Some critics question whether the idea presents its own environmental risks. But if it does work, the project would rebuild an important protection against storm waves. It would also help the land provide new living areas for birds and fish that depend on wetlands.

Saltwater is destroying the coast. Pathways cut for oil and gas development, boat travel and logging have worsened the problem. The state estimates that it has lost about 518,000 hectares of land since 1932. If nothing is done, more than twice that much land could disappear over the next 50 years.

Experts and officials have discussed the idea of using the river to rebuild the coast for many years. But it was not until money became available from the 2010 BP oil spill that the plan began to really take shape. In 2010, an explosion killed 11 people on an oil rig (石油钻塔) off the Gulf Coast that energy company BP operated. Millions of gallons of oil then flowed into the water over the next three months.

One year later, the United States government ruled that BP was responsible for the accident,

The company was ordered to pay billions of dollars for the damage. Louisiana is putting much of its share of the money toward coastal restoration.

1.What advantage will the new land bring?

A.Preventing severe drought.

B.Creating habitats for animals.

C.Controlling the powerful river.

D.Increasing the northern farm land.

2.What can cause the coast to disappear faster?

A.Energy changes.

B.Destroyed levees.

C.Man-made disasters.

D.Man-made water protection systems.

3.What made the plan of rebuilding the coast land come into effect?

A.The restoration of an oil rig.

B.The payment of compensation by BP.

C.The strong demand from oil companies.

D.The special support from some local critics.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Use Nature Power to Stop Soil Losing

B.Let the River Go Back to Its Original State

C.Fight Coastal Destruction by Copying Nature

D.Remove the Man-Made Barriers from the River

I feel ashamed to admit this, but in much of my past life, I pretended I knew what was going on when I didn’t, for fear of being “caught out”. In the school cafeteria, when people talked about TV shows, which I didn’t have the channels for, or on MSN Messenger, when I read unfamiliar song lyrics my friends had shared, I felt upset and I’d pretend to be calm and recognize what they were talking about, like everyone else.

I did this, as I didn’t want to be seen not to understand some things that people, I respected were good at. I thought that if I didn’t know what was going on, it betrayed a moral failing and exposed me as a boy who was deeply uncool and actually, a bit stupid.

And so I nodded along silently. I prayed I wouldn’t be found out what I really was, or I would feel embarrassed. I would follow up each incident with some diligent homework on the subject, trying to disguise myself. Unsurprisingly, it all became far too much and recently I’ve found myself overwhelmed by the number of things I didn’t know about. From politics to pop culture—even Micro Electro Mechanical Systems. I just felt exhausted by it all.

And so I made a decision. I decided to stop nodding frequently at the pub while crazily searching the relative information under the table. Instead, now I’m embracing saying what is really true when I don’t know what the other person is talking about. Instead of hurrying to make up some funny opinion about a show I’ve never seen, I’ll say something like: “I’ve heard of that show but I haven’t watched it yet” Saying “I don’t know” is such a simple thing. I’m sorry that it took me so long to start saying that. I’ve changed my attitude towards something I don’t know in life. I’ll never get caught in an embarrassing lie again.

1.What does the author tell us in paragraph 1?

A.His fear of making mistakes. B.The ways to make friends in the past.

C.School activities he and his friends loved. D.His sense of shame about lying in the past.

2.How did the author feel when he didn’t know about the topic m conversation?

A.Confused. B.Anxious and awkward.

C.Unconcerned. D.Calm and relaxed

3.What does the underlined word “disguise” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Hide. B.Beat.

C.Expose. D.Fool.

4.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To show disadvantages of being ignored.

B.To show some embarrassing learning experiences.

C.To tell us what to do with the case of being “caught out”.

D.To tell us how saying “I don’t know” changed his life attitude.

In order to keep the Chinese traditional culture alive, we held the Chinese Character Dictation Competition in our school on last Saturday. Lucky , I was selected to take part in an activity on behalf of my classmates. Some of my classmates helped me review many Chinese characters when aren't commonly used today, while others reminded me of unfamiliar one whenever they were free. My head teacher also encouraged us to try my best. During the competition, I manage to answer all the questions giving by the judges because I had made great efforts for it. ExperiencedBased Education

Everyone is familiar with traditional education. You sit in a class and a teacher teaches.  This is an important part of development. But at some point, every individual has to take charge of their own education. To do this, one must look at the root of learning.1.

Basically, unfamiliar experiences usually add more value than experiences that are familiar.

2. And we are in a better state to learn something new. Honestly, someone who never experiences the same thing twice will never have a chance to benefit from anything learned. However, new experiences are generally what make people interesting and push them to grow.

High school is a new experience. College is a new experience. However, at some point traditional education becomes repetitive. It is not that you won’t learn anything else, but that the environment is so familiar.3.

To solve this, an individual needs to introduce new experiences into their life. You may spend a summer in a different part of the country or learn a new language through trial and error. You can also go to a drivein movieor some other entertainment event that is new to you.4.

These types of experiences often result in very little“book knowledge”.  Instead, they will often provide you with a better understanding of yourself as you experience your reaction to different situations.5. It can be invaluable for you to work effectively with others. Becoming a well rounded human isn’t something that happens by accident. You can spend your entire lifetime developing your potential.

A.Has education changed so much in the last decade?

B.They will also provide you with a better understanding of others.

C.Those new experiences may not lead to great personal development.

D.These are all things that can stretch and expand your experience in life.

E.This is because unfamiliar experiences require much more of our attention.

F.As a result, you can easily become less aware of your experience and not learn as much.

G.What makes some experiences add great value to our lives while other experiences do not?

If you are reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?

Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life—or “IRL”, as you would say?

Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents", who were always there to guide and help their children with a busy schedule filled with homework and after-class activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.

With these taken into account, does the face down generation need a warning? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to be enthusiastic and willing to be become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.

So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there are reasons to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).

1.Which of the following words can not be used to describe the oh-ohs?

A.Creative. B.Caring.

C.Ignorant. D.Intelligent.

2.What does the underlined phrase “helicopter parents” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.parents who are rich and travel by helicopter.

B.parents who always watch over their children.

C.parents who have a very busy schedule.

D.parents who only turn up when necessary.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.The writer is a member of the face-down generation.

B.The writer is optimistic about the future of the oh-ohs.

C.The oh-ohs are more good-looking than their parents.

D.The oh-ohs care about nothing other than their phones.

4.What can be a best title for the passage?

A.The “helicopter parents” B.The over-worried parents

C.The spoiled generation D.The face-down generation

We've certainly seen a dog nursing a wound, or a deer calling out in pain. But many animals suffer in silence. The most silent sufferers in the animal world may be fish.

Do fish feel pain? A new study from the University of Liverpool has found that fish feel pain in a way that's "strikingly similar" to humans. For the study, Lynne Sneddon, from the university's Institute of Integrative Biology, reviewed the existing body of research 98 studies in all and concluded that they feel pain just as sharply as we do."

When subject to a potentially painful event, fish show changes in behavior such as stopping feeding and reduced activity, which are prevented when a pain-relieving drug is provided. In fact, like us, they breathe heavily and stop eating when they're hurting. They will even rub the part of their body that aches." Sneddon notes in a university release.

To understand pain in other species, scientists look at nociceptors (疼痛感受器), which send signals to the brain when the body is being damaged. Humans have them throughout their skin, bones and muscles. Nociceptors have also been found in many other species, including even those tiny fruit flies.

Fish have the same means to detect pain signals and the equipment to receive them. Besides, the fishermen's opinion that fish feel no pain just doesn't add up from an evolutionary view. Pain is an efficient messenger that tells, us that we've got a problem. An animal that can't feel it won't get that memo (ER), even if it hurts itself.

"If we accept fish experience pain, then this has great significance for how we treat them," Sneddon says. "Care should be taken when handling fish to avoid damaging theirs sensitive skin and they should be humanely caught and killed."

1.What can we learn about fish?

A.They are insensitive to pain. B.They are able to sense pain.

C.They won't react to painkillers. D.Their brain is the first to send pain signals.

2.What will a fish do when its lips get hurt?

A.It might rub its lips. B.It will keep its mouth open.

C.It will swim around like crazy. D.It will keep eating to forget pain.

3.What is the significance of the study according to Sneddon?

A.People will treat fish in a kinder way.

B.People can understand evolution better.

C.People can develop more drugs to save fish.

D.People will think of more ways to catch fish.

4.What does the underlined part "add up" probably mean?

A.Disappear. B.Put forward.

C.Make sense. D.Happen.

I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I’ll never forget. I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn’t sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds” (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn’t believe my eyes; this wasn’t shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind. Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl(爬行) through people’s legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English Queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham’s were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this. In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK. You won’t believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

I was traveling by myself in Mumbai, India. I enjoyed the free of going anywhere as I liked. However, I was confused to seeing the many choices of restaurants. I could see French restaurants, Japanese restaurants, Mexican restaurants and so on. After trying aimless for a few days, I began to miss Chinese food and went into Chinese restaurant. To my surprising, I found crowds of people in it. I haven't expected Chinese food could be so popular in India. The food was not exactly like which I ate at home and it was familiar enough to be comforting. An Indian customer share one table with me told me Chinese food is so popular that even restaurants serving for Indian food will usually include a Chinese section on the menu. But when he said, "We don't even think it's Chinese. It's very familiar and comforting.” I couldn't help feeling shocked.

The beginning of November means winter is well on its way. 1. It's great to stay indoors surrounded by people that make you happiest. I've always felt homes that have the warmest atmosphere are those that feel the most lived in. Here are my personal tips on how to feed that coziness(温馨)into your home this winter.

It makes sense to fill your home with textured(有纹理的)decorations which feel warm and easy.  You can throw a textured blanket on your couch or bed. I'm also a huge fan of carpets on top of the wooden floors. Of course, carpets will help to physically warm your space by offering a cozy spot for your feet. 2.

It's also a good idea to display your creations and collections in your home. My wall was feeling bare one day, so I filled the space with a simple wall hanging. 3. Simple, yes, and it makes me feel warm every time I see it. Do any of you have a love for windowsills(窗台)like I do? Make use of your windowsill by displaying decorations like feathers, candleholders, rocks... anything you've collected over the years.

4. There's a homey feeling that goes along with letting your bed stay unmade for the day, or slipping your shoes off in the middle of your bedroom. Leave your closet door half open; hang necklaces on your wall; leave your curtain over the top of a mirror instead of getting it neatly away. 5.

A.A warm home usually feels casual.

B.I made it from a stick and some string.

C.I'm proud of my gift for creating' wonderful artworks.

D.And the addition can make a space feel warmer, just by looking at it.

E.It's a good habit to take time to get everything well organized at home.

F.To me, there's nothing better than spending a cold evening in a warm home.

G.In a word, if you make your space feel lived in, you'll enjoy living there all the more.

When Barzilay had a routine breast X-ray in her early 40s, the image showed a complex group of white spots in her breast tissue. The marks could be normal, or they could be cancerous-even the best doctors often struggle to tell the difference. Over the next two years Barzilay underwent a second X-ray, a MRI and a biopsy and she was finally diagnosed(诊断) with breast cancer in 2014.

Barzilay was treated and made a good recovery. But she remained terrified that the uncertainties of reading an X-ray could delay treatment so she made a career-changing decision.

A computer scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Barzilay had never studied health before. Her research used machine-learning techniques for natural language processing. But she had been looking for a new line of research and decided to team up with radiologists (放射科医生) to develop machine-learning algorithms (算法) that use computers' superior visual analysis to spot patterns in X-rays that the human eye might miss.

Over the next four years the team taught a computer program to analyze X-rays from about 32,000 women and told it which women had been diagnosed with cancer within five years of the scan.  They then tested the computer's matching abilities in 3,800 more patients. Their resulting algorithm, published last May in Radiology, was significantly more accurate at predicting cancer than practices generally used in clinics. When Barzilay's team ran the program on her own X-ray from 2012-one her doctor had cleared-the algorithm correctly predicted she was at a higher risk of developing breast cancer within five years than 98 percent of patients.

AI applications are entering clinics at a rapid rate, and physicians have met the technology with equal parts excitement about its potential to reduce their workload and fear about losing their jobs to machines. Algorithms also raise questions about how to regulate a machine that is constantly learning and changing and who is to blame if an algorithm gets a diagnosis wrong. Still, many physicians are excited about the promise of AI programs.

1.What advantage do Barzilay's algorithms take of computers to predict cancer?

A.Superior visual analysis.

B.Timely risk warning settings.

C.Natural-language processing techniques.

D.Large storage of radiological knowledge.

2.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Cancer. B.Research.

C.The team. D.The program.

3.How do physicians react to AI applications in clinics?

A.They doubt the accuracy of the applications.

B.They have mixed feelings about the applications.

C.They promise to make the best of the applications.

D.They expect to rapidly popularize the applications.

4.It can be inferred from the text that

A.Barzilay suffered from breast cancer for two years in her forties

B.at first Barzilay didn't think X-ray was a reliable way of checking cancer

C.with Barzilay's algorithms her cancer could have been diagnosed earlier

D.Barzilay failed to turn to the best doctors to have her breast checked

An exhibition at the Harvard Museum of Natural History is around the theme of food plant disease, using early 20th-century glass models of rotting fruit.

Known as Harvard's "Glass Flowers", the Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants consists of over 4300 sculptures of plants and plant parts fashioned entirely in glass by the German father-and-son artists Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka between 1887 and 1936. Harvard originally used the models as teaching tools, showing plants' three-dimensional structure and color.

The "Fruits in Decay" shows a collection of models of diseased, rotting, and withering(枯萎的) fruiting plants. The rotting fruit series was intended specifically to educate the public about the danger of plant disease. These models were created by Rudolf, the younger Blaschka, in the early 20th century Harvard botanist Oakes Ames asked him to create these diseased fruit models. And he thought about these as a way to look at what we now call food security-or insecurity.

Though the models were made nearly a hundred years ago, the theme is as remarkable as ever. Most of the illnesses shown on Rudolf Blaschka's plant models still affect today's crops.

"In certain ways, global agriculture is more likely to be harmed than it has ever been to disease threats(威胁), largely due to the widespread practice of planting one crop over large production areas. Less genetic diversity means that crops have less resistance to disease," says Sheng Yang He, a professor at Michigan State University.

Climate change will make plants more vulnerable to disease because warming temperatures disable an important plant defense system against plant disease. Major crop loss from plant disease is already at a shocking 20 t0 40 percent. Food security threats from disease will almost certainly become more common so there's a lot to be done about convincing people of it.

1.What are shown on the exhibition?

A.Models of diverse crops. B.Models of withering flowers.

C.Models of rotting plant parts. D.Models of diseased fruiting plants.

2.By whom were the exhibits created?

A.Oakes Ames. B.Sheng Yang He.

C.Rudolf Blaschka. D.Leopold Blaschka.

3.Why is the exhibition meaningful?

A.It convinces people of the food security threats.

B.It reminds people of effects of global warming.

C.It helps people understand the history of fruit planting.

D.It provides people with knowledge of global agriculture.

4.What does the underlined word "vulnerable" in the last paragraph mean?

A.Weak and easily hurt. B.Resistant and protected.

C.Defensive and hard to attack. D.Sensitive and completely destroyed.

Growing up in a small town, J.K. Rowling seems to have led a rather unremarkably life. Many of his former teachers said there was nothing which they could really remember about that girl. After graduated from the University of Exert as French major in 1987, she went to Portugal and lived there for years. She had been worked at various teaching positions after she finally became a full-time writer. Rowling became well-known for writing chapter of the first Harry Potter book in a cafe with her baby slept in a carriage beside her. Rowling’s books have been translated from more than 55 languages and are available in more than 200 countries.
