A struggling Waffle House employee who was trying to serve nearly 30 people by himself after midnight got a full serving of kindness when some customers jumped behind the counter to help him.

Ethan Crispo, 24, witnessed the inspiring scene in the early hours of Nov. 3 at a Waffle House in Birmingham, Alabama.

Crispo told TODAY’s Kerry Sanders that he had come to the 24-hour restaurant from a friend’s birthday party and saw the struggling employee, identified only as Ben, trying to cook the food, serve it, bus tables and wash dishes while more than 25 people were waiting to eat.

“The look on his face was just confusion,” Crispo told Sanders.

An unidentified male customer then decided to help him out, grabbing an apron and going behind the counter to wash dishes.

Another customer, Alison Stanley, went behind the counter to make some coffee—still dressed from a night out on the town.

“I don’t think it’s anything special,” Stanley told Sanders. “He needed help, so I got up and helped out.”

Crispo took some photos of the scene as multiple customers worked to bus tables and wash dishes while Ben focused on taking orders and preparing the food.

Waffle House told TODAY that Ben was left to support himself due to a scheduling issue.

“We had two associates scheduled to leave, however, due to a communication mix-up, their relief did not show up on time,” Waffle House director of PR Pat Warner said in a statement. “That left Ben, our cook, alone in the restaurant with hungry customers. He worked the grill (烤架) and got the orders out.”

The company was also thankful for the customers who joined in and helped Ben out.

“We are grateful that many of our customers feel like they are part of our Waffle House family,” Warner said. “There is a sense of community in each and every one of our restaurants, and we appreciate the fact that they consider our associates like family.”

“We are also very thankful for Ben, who kept the restaurant open. He is a representative of our Waffle House culture by always putting the customers first.”

Crispo had his usual order, double plain waffle, as he took in the scene of strangers helping out Ben on his shift.

“Humanity truly isn’t good, it’s great!” he said.

My Boxing Experience

This year I joined boxing class. My friend Lea and I were the only ________ in the class.     We got to throw our first punches (拳击) and learned how we should stand. I still didn’t know how to do it well, but I felt that choosing the boxing class was the right decision. Mr. Vernon, our boxing teacher, made us work hard and sweat. The boxing pads (拳击护具) were my favorite, but my punches weren’t ________ enough.

After participating in more practices, we had learned how to punch in six different ways. The boys were improving a lot on their strength, and Lea with her speed, and me? Well, I had a hard time seeing the ________. Mr. Vernon would always tell me that practice would make me stronger, and this is what helped motivate me to ________.

Each practice there was at least one boy who would ________ me and say, “Oh you’re too short to box. Mr. Vernon has to ________ down when you are on the boxing pads; oh you’re not strong enough; you punch like a mouse.”

I know those comments were not to ________ me, but just to have fun. It’s true, I’m a small and short person and I did lack confidence; but hearing those comments can either bring you ________, or make you feel motivated to show them they are ________. In my case, they started to discourage me. I didn’t have the strength to think they were wrong, and a part of me thought that they were speaking the ________. I hid it inside my heart because I thought that showing that I was ________ myself would make it worse.

I remember one particular practice where I was mad and angry, and my punches suddenly felt stronger and faster. I was ________, yet I had a feeling in me that it was there all along. I just didn’t have that ________ in me. After practice, Mr. Vernon pointed out that I was getting stronger and better, which really made me feel more ________ and showed me that what the others were saying about me was wrong. I had ________ found the strength I needed. The following practices, Mr. Vernon was impressed with my hooks and uppercuts, because they were getting ________.

This experience taught me that boxing requires a lot of work and effort, but it also taught me not to feel ________ about what people say. If you focus on your strong points and improve on your ________ ones, there is no reason for you to feel disappointed. Boxing taught me how to fight, and defend myself physically and mentally, and show that short girls can do anything if they have the ________ to prove people wrong. Being short doesn’t ________ me and definitely does not limit me from doing things that tall or stronger people can do.

One of the biggest ideas in computer technology is cloud computing. The system is changing the way information is kept. It uses a group of computers or servers to store information instead of one. The data floats around like clouds instead of being saved on any computer. It means computers can be smaller than ever and store practically unlimited amounts of information. No longer are bulky computers needed because all the information is in the clouds.

So when will cloud computing start affecting the way you use computers? You may not have noticed, but it already has. Facebook, Amazon, Twitter and many other sites all run on cloud computing. Cloud computing is really useful. You can use it to access the same file at work at home or in other countries on different computers. There may even be environmental benefits, too. Gmail, which uses cloud computing, says that the system saves a lot of energy.

However, potential problems do exist such as losing information and not being able to access certain files when the internet is down. Also, some companies charge fees for their cloud computing services. Another major problem is security. If all your Information is out there in the cloud and not safely stored on your own computer or laptop, it may be possible for other people to access it. More and more of our personal information is in danger of being stolen. Therefore, it is important to be careful and to find ways of making the information secure.

More and more companies are starting up and offering cloud computing. Will the company be reliable? What will happen to your data if the company goes out of business? There are real worries. Even so, for those interested in computing technology, one thing is for certain ---the future in the clouds is going to be very exciting.

1.How does the author describe the data?

A.It needs only a single server.

B.It is a cloud floating around computers.

C.It makes computers become smaller.

D.It improves the computer’s function.

2.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Cloud computing will come into use soon.

B.Files will be entered when the Internet is down.

C.Personal information may be lost if not kept properly.

D.Companies will enjoy free cloud computing services.

3.What’s the author’s attitude towards cloud computing?

A.Worried. B.Positive.

C.Unclear. D.Cautious.

4.The purpose of the passage is                .

A.to introduce cloud computing to us

B.to talk about the way computers change

C.to warn us to be careful to use computers

D.to tell us how to access information on other computers

Are you wondering whether it’s worth going for a little jog? Don’t hesitate, and get your sports shoes on. A new study shows that proper running lowers the risk of death before the normal time.

In an analysis of 14 previous studies from the US and Denmark, the group of researchers from institutes in Australia and Finland concluded that increasing running participation would probably lead to substantial improvements in population health and longevity. The studies involved 232,149 participants over time periods ranging from 5. 5 to 35 years.

On the whole, people running any distance were associated with a 27% lower risk of death from all causes than those who did not, the study shows. Running was also related with a 30% and 23% lower risk of death from cardiovascular(心血管的)disease and cancer, respectively.

Previous studies had concluded “inconsistent findings” about whether running could lower the risk of premature death, according to the researchers. Lead researcher Jim White, a professor at Victoria University in Melbourne, told CNN: “Our recent findings may encourage physically inactive individuals to take up running and those who already run to keep on doing it.”

He added that doctors may be encouraged by our findings to promote running as a part of “lifestyle medicine”. In their paper, which will be published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers say health professionals are sometimes wary of promoting running because vigorous(剧烈的)use of it has been linked with sudden heart death.

Jim and his team deny this by noting that the benefit of running outweighs the risk. However, they did say advice should be given on a case-by-case basis, as running might not be appropriate for everyone. Although running has a clear health benefit, the researchers point out that higher “doses” of running may not reduce the risk of premature death further. According to the WHO’s guidelines, adults aged between 18 and 64 should take 150 minutes of gentle exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week.

1.What did the new study focus on?

A.The benefit of jog. B.People’s lifestyles.

C.People’s living conditions. D.The risk of jog.

2.What may the study contribute to according to Jim?

A.Doctors’ quicker treatment.

B.People’s losing weight.

C.People’s involvement in running.

D.Researchers’ promotion of sport.

3.What does the underlined word “wary” in paragraph 5 mean?

A.Certain. B.Tired.

C.Cautious. D.Confident.

4.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The risk of exercising vigorously.

B.The reasons why people should keep running.

C.The suggestions on running appropriately.

D.The argument about whether running benefits people.

In the winter of 1910, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh stepped off a train in the northern Chinese city of Harbin. He was there to solve a medical mystery, at great personal risk. Over the past few months, an unknown disease had swept along the railways of northeast China, killing 99.9% of its victims. The Qing Imperial court had sent the Cambridge-educated Dr. Wu north to stop the epidemic.

When Dr Wu arrived in Harbin on Christmas Eve, 1910, he carried little in the way of medical instruments and had only one assistant. One of Wu' s first acts upon arrival was to set up special quarantine(隔离) units and to order lockdowns to stop infected persons from traveling and spreading the disease. He had teams check households for possible cases, and even managed to convince authorities to completely close the railways in the early weeks of 1911. Of particular concern was the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, which had become a great annual migration of people traveling across the country to see their families.

Thanks to Dr. Wu's efforts, the number of plague victims began to die down, and by March 1, 1911, the epidemic was fully contained. The pneumonic (肺炎的) plague outbreak of 1910-1911 lasted nearly four months, affected five provinces and six major cities, and accounted for over 60,000 deaths. It is clear that without the brave and decisive actions taken by Dr. Wu, it could have been much worse. Had the epidemic gone unchecked, allowing holiday rail passengers to spread the disease to the rest of China could have meant a catastrophic loss of life and possibly a global health crisis.

In April 1911, Dr. Wu chaired an International Plague Conference in Shenyang, attended by scientists from 11 counties including the United States, Great Britain, Russia, Japan and France. They praised Dr. Wu for his handling of the 1910-1911 outbreak. For a time, Dr. Wu was the world's most famous plague fighter, a title be defended in a malaria epidemic in China in 1919, and a return of plague in 1921.

1.What was Dr Wu's mission in 1910?

A.To take personal risk.

B.To end an epidemic.

C.To provide medical education.

D.To investigate the number of victims.

2.Which of Dr Wu's acts stopped the disease from spreading nationwide?

A.Setting up special quarantine units around the country.

B.Treating infected persons with his medical instruments.

C.Checking households himself for possible cases.

D.Convincing authorities to close the railways.

3.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.The disease worsened after Mach 1, 1911.

B.60,000 would have died without Dr Wu's efforts.

C.A global health crisis followed the 1910-1911 outbreak.

D.The plague broke out again about 10 years later.

4.What can be the best title of the text?

A.A Plague Fighter

B.A Global Health Crisis

C.The Beginning of the Chinese Public Health System

D.A Plague Outbreak

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题

Since it never occurred to anybody at the school to provide the services of an interpreter,I had to sit in the front row so that I could read the teacher's lips. Classroom discussions were virtually impossible to follow because I couldn't hear what was being said around the room.In a vain effort to keep up with them,I was always asking whoever happened to be sitting next to me what was being said. Eventually,I got tired of watching everyone shrug their shoulders indifferently and rolling their eyes.I began to pretend that I knew what was going on.Fitting in was so important to me that every time the kids laughed,I laughed along even though I felt muddle-headed most of the time.

Luckily then fate threw me light.

On one sunny afternoon,my teacher,Mrs.Jordan, asked the class a question.I read her lips from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand.I couldn't believe it-despite my fears,I felt incredibly confident because-for once-I was sure I had the right answer. But,when she called on me,I was suddenly afraid. Here was an opportunity to impress the powerful teacher and show her I was worthy of her love.I didn't want to blow it.I took a deep breath and nervously answered her question.

Her explosive response shocked all of us.She enthusiastically stepped her right foot on the floor, pointing directly at me.With sparkling eyes and a wide smile she cried,“THAT'S RIGHT,STEPHEN!”

For the first time in my young life,I felt like an instant star.My heart burst with pride. My confidence soared. It was amazing what a great effect the simple three-word phrase delivered with incredible enthusiasm had on my young life. THAT'S RIGHT,STEPHEN!It got me to think that I would make a place for myself in this world no matter how many obstacles I had to overcome. From that day,my grades and speech improved dramatically and my peers suddenly looked at me with new respect.

The recent widespread interest in all branches of psychology has accustomed us to accepting an idea which, when first offered, seemed laughable:We all,at some level, spend most of the time on reverie(幻想)。We dream either consciously or unconsciously, awake or asleep,of a situation in which we feel we should be happier than we are in real life.Occasionally some childish ideas of happiness or success break out in to confuse or prevent us from living an adult life.Sometimes the dream is refusing to leave the safe shelter of the nursery, where all wants were met as soon as felt, where warmth and food and love were given freely and unearned. As Emerson wrote,"We do not believe there is any force in today to match or recreate that beautiful yesterday. We linger in(徘徊)the ruins of the old tent where once we had bread and shelter."To some extent this is true of all of us,but less true of the happy and successful adult than of others.

At other times, funnily enough, the life-wasting reverie is about success:The mild man is Napoleon or the ugly woman is a charming singer. If reality never broke in upon such reverie, the dreamer might be happier than if he were to find himself in a position to realize some part of it.Such reverie is in itself compensation for a life of dull routine. But,the world being what it is,the dreamer must live, for part of his time at least,in the cold atmosphere of fact. This is no Land of Cockaigne:Roast 1t pigs do not run about crying,"Eat me!"Fruit does not fall from the trees into our mouths..

The deeply rooted dreamer will struggle only just as much as he needs, and no more.He will do anything half-heartedly to get his bread and butter. Then, when his daily task is over,he will be hack to his dreams again, whether he realizes it or not. He succeeds at only one thing:in clearing away a little space, gaining each day a few hours of free time, for just one purpose-to go on wasting his life. But his

dream is happy. It is,for him,a true compensation for his failure in every other relation, and so he continues in it.Yet,since after all happiness is the true goal,he believes that the smallest success in reverie brings with it more happiness.

However,it is important to remember that failure is real, for otherwise we will not prepare ourselves to fight it.

Dad and I loved baseball and hated sleep. One midsummer dawn when I was nine, we drove to the local park with our baseballs, gloves, and Yankees caps.

“If you thought night baseball was a thrill, just wait,” Dad told me. “Morning air carries the ball like you’ve never seen.”

He was right. Our fastballs charged faster and landed more lightly. The echoes of our catches popped as the sun rose over the dew-sprinkled fields.

The park was all ours for about two hours. Then a young mother pushed her stroller toward us. When she neared, dad politely leaned-over the stroller, waved, and gave the baby his best smile.

The mother stared at him for a second, and then rushed away.

Dad covered his mouth with his hand and walked to the car. “Let’s go,” he said. “I’m not feeling well.”

A month earlier, Bell’s palsy(贝尔氏神经麻痹)had struck Dad, paralyzing the right side of his face. His smile, which once eased the pain of playground cuts and burst forth was gone.

As I slumped in the car, I began suspecting that our sunrise, park visit wasn’t about watching daylight lift around us. This was his effort to avoid stares.

After that day, Dad spent more time indoors and no longer wanted to play catch.

For Bell’s palsy suffers, most recover in several weeks. Other cases take a few months to heal. But after nine weeks of therapy, the doctor admitted she couldn’t help Dad.

Dad coped through humor. He occasionally grabbed erasable markers and drew an even-sided wide smile across his face. Other times, he practiced his Elvis impersonation, joking that his curled lips allowed him to perfect his performance of “Hound Dog”.

By the time I entered fourth grade that September, dad could blink his right eye and speak clearly again. But his smile still hadn’t returned. So I made a secret vow I would abstain from smiles of any kind.

Nothing about fourth grade made this easy. Classmates were both old enough to laugh about pop culture and young enough to appreciate jokes. Kids called me Frowny the Dwarf.(I was three foot ten.) Teachers accompanied me into hallways, asking what was wrong. Breaking the promise I had made myself was tempting, but I couldn’t let Dad not smile alone.

When I asked my PE coach, “What’s so great about smiling?” He made me do push-ups while the rest of the class played ball game. Then he called Dad.

I never learned what they discussed. But when I got off the school bus that afternoon, I saw Dad waiting for me, holding our gloves and ball. For the first time in months, we got in the family car and went to the park for a catch.

“It’s been too long,” he said.

Roughly a half-dozen fathers and sons lined the field with gloved arms in the air.

Dad couldn’t smile, but he beamed, and so did I. Sundown came quickly. The field’s white lights glowed, and everyone else left. But dad and I threw everything from curve balls to folly floaters into the night. We had catching up to do.

Scientists say they’ve developed a system using machine learning to predict when and where lighting will strike. The research was led by engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power outages, destroy property, damage electrical equipment and start forest fires. For these reasons, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict and control lightning. In the United States and other places, ground-based sensing devices are used to identify strikes as they happen. But, no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.

The system tested in the experiments used a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.

The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed.

The atmospheric, data was placed into a machine learning algorithm (算法), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.

Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student at the institute who led the development of the method. He said, “current systems for gathering such data are slow and complex and require costly collection equipment like radar or satellites.”

“Our method uses data that can be obtained from any weather station,” Mostajabi said. “This will improve data collection in very remote areas not covered by radar and satellite or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.

The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection system. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project.

1.Why have climate scientists tried to predict and control lighting?

A.To collect relative data.

B.To reduce the destruction lightning has been causing.

C.To create a scientific system.

D.To do research in relation to machine learning.

2.The four mentioned surface conditions include all the following EXCEPT________.

A.air pollution

B.wind speed

C.relative humidity

D.air temperature

3.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Lighting.

B.The system being tested.

C.The atmospheric data.

D.The machine learning algorithm.

4.What can we learn about Mostajabi from the passage?

A.He developed the method and the system himself.

B.He thinks the current systems are too slow and simple.

C.He is a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

D.He believes their system does much better in data collection.

5.Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?

A.Lightning Causes Huge World Wide Damage.

B.Scientists Test Systems to Predict Lightning.

C.Machine Learning Has Made New Breakthrough.

D.A New Approach Has Improved Data Collection.
