Many college students turn to ADHD(注意缺陷障碍) medicine during exam week, which is regarded as “smart drugs” that will help their academic(学术的) performance. The thinking is that if the drugs help students with ADHD improve their focus, they should provide the same benefit for people who don’t have the disorder.

But a new study shows that drugs can actually damage brain function of healthy students who take the drug hoping to boost their intelligence. “It’s not a smart drug which suddenly improve their ability to understand information they read,” said Lisa Weyandt, a professor at the University of Rhode Island.

To test whether this effect is real or not, researchers organized 13 students to take part in two five-hour study sessions(一段时间) in the lab. The students took the standard 30mg ADHD drugs before one session, and a sugar pill before the other. Students on ADHD drugs did experience an increase in their blood pressure and heart rates. “The medicine was having an effect on their brain,” Weyandt said. The students also showed an improvement in their ability to focus, the researchers found.

However, students on ADHD drugs experienced no improvement in reading comprehension, reading fluency or knowledge reviews, compared to when they’d taken a sugar pill. “We read aloud stories to them and asked them to recall information from the stories,” she said. “That didn’t improve.”

Worse, the ADHD drug actually harms students’ memory. It’s often misused because people pull all-nighters and they’re tired, and they think it’s going to keep them awake. Maybe it does, but it’s certainly not going to help their academic work. The brain is still developing until the mid to late 20s. It’s important to keep it healthy. There’s also a chance that ADHD drugs could endanger a student’s heart health.

1.Why do some college students take ADHD drugs?

A.To improve their sleeping. B.To get higher marks.

C.To make them feel relaxed. D.To treat brain disorder.

A.They became more focused.

B.Their blood pressure was reduced.

C.Their reading fluency was greatly raised.

D.They could remember better and more quickly.

4.Where can we read this text?

A.In a drug instruction. B.In a textbook.

C.In a travel magazine. D.In a news report.

Paper route

A paper route is one of the most common tried and true ways to earn money, and has been the first job for many kids over the decades.

Pros:

First, if your child rides his bicycle every morning during deliveries, he will be getting a great workout while he is earning money. Second, paper deliverers have the freedom to do their route as quickly as they want, in the order that they want; and they don’t have to dress up to do it!

Cons:

Unpredictable Weather: your child will be facing adverse(不利的) weather conditions.

Early Morning Hours: newspapers have to arrive early, many times by 5:00 in the morning. But your children might have to be up as early as 2: 00 a. m. to get the papers out on time.

Collecting Money: It can be intimidating(令人胆怯的 ) for some children to ask strangers for money.

What Kids Can Learn About Money (by doing a paper route):

Paper routes depend on punctuality of the paper delivery. Your child will learn to deliver the papers by a specified time each morning.

Family business

If you own your own business, you can hire them to work for your family business.

Pros:

Since you will be the employer, you can make changes to their schedule if you need to. In addition, your child will work for you, so you’ll always know where he is and be able to keep an eye on him.

Cons:

Variability: depending on your line of work, you may not have enough work to keep your child busy consistently.

Limited for Children: If you don’t have your own business, but like the idea, you may want to ask friends, neighbors, or relatives you know who might want to hire some additional help.

What Kids Can Learn About Money (by working for the family business):

Working for the family will give your children a direct line of communication when they want to talk. Give them the opportunity to discuss pay rates with you. Introduce them to negotiations to agree on a fair rate.

1.What are the advantages of paper routes, according to the passage?

A.They are safe and have a flexible schedule.

B.You just work in the morning and can get a great workout.

C.You don’t have to wear a uniform or work in your spare time.

D.You will get exercise and have the freedom to work the way you want.

2.What is the advantage of parents having their children work for the family business?

A.They can change their children’s schedule as they want.

B.They can ensure the safety of their children.

C.It makes them busy, so they don’t have time to work.

D.it will help children develop the spirit of enterprise.

3.Which of the following is TRUE about the two jobs mentioned above?

A.Children have to arrive at 5: 00 am to prepare the newspapers on a paper route.

B.Parents approve of children asking strangers for money on a paper route

C.Working for the family business can increase the communication between parents and children.

D.Only children whose parents own a business can work

Many students are suffered from nearsightedness. It is because the overuse of mobile phones, computers and ipads which their sight has been harmed. If your eyes are fixing on a small bright screen for a long time, your eyesight will be badly affected.

Nearsightedness has brought much trouble to the students. It makes them able to see clearly what is being written on a blackboard.

To have good eyesight, we must use eyes in a right way. Let’s take up books and reading for a while in bright light. When reading, we should keep up a distance between the eyes and the books. When feeling tired, we should leave the books for a while and do the eyes exercise for relaxation. Only by using eyes in a health way can we have a pair of bright eyes.

Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation

At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worries can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during the anxious moments.

1.A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.

Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse.2.When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge these thoughts by asking yourself positive questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.

Be smart in how you deal with fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that makes you anxious, break the task into small ones.3.

Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what you worry about never comes true.4.Then you should leave everything else in the hands of God.

It is not easy to deal with all the fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy.5.

A.Take it one step at a time and things will work out well at last.

B.When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.

C.This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety.

D.Instead of worrying about something that probably wont happen, concentrate on what you are able to do.

E.The next time you fell depressed, review your list and think about the good things that you have in your life.

F.A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking.

G.Completing these smaller tasks once at a time will make the stress more manageable and increase your chances of success.

The United Nations Environment Program is calling for urgent action to reduce growing risks from chemicals. Better management of chemicals could save millions of lives and billions of dollars. As estimated, 143,000 chemicals are now produced. Yet the report says only a small number of these chemicals have been studied for their effects on human health and the environment. It says death and disability rates are high from the unsafe use of chemical products.

Sylvie Lemmet, director of the UNEP, says poor management of chemicals has a high economic cost. For example, she says the cost is higher than the amount of overseas development aid, or ODA, for health care in sub-Saharan Africa.

She says, “If you look at the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide (杀虫剂) in sub-Saharan Africa, only the injury and the loss of working time is estimated to be 6.3 billion US dollars in 2009. This is higher than the total ODA that is going to the health part in the same area.”

The UNEP estimates that chemical sales worldwide will increase by around three percent a year until 2050. Chemical production is moving quickly from developed to developing countries. By 2020, chemical production is expected to increase by 40 percent in Africa and the Middle East and 33 percent in Latin America. One of its biggest concerns is pollution of rivers and lakes by pesticide and fertilizer. Other major concerns are heavy metal pollution from the production of cement (水泥) and textiles (纺织品), and dioxin pollution from mining.

The UN report urges the chemical industry and governments to work together to develop safety policies. It says preventing harm costs less than fixing it.

1.The purpose of Paragraph 3 is mainly to indicate that ______.

A.chemicals have a high production cost

B.Africa needs more development aid

C.the use of pesticide causes a great loss

D.the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide is incorrect

2.Which of the following is NOT a source of danger according to the text?

A.Pesticide. B.Fertilizer.

C.Heavy metals. D.Minerals.

3.According to the text, what is the main reason for the risks from chemicals?

A.The mass production of cement and textiles.

B.Lack of research funds on chemicals.

C.Poor management of chemicals.

D.Contradictions between chemical producers and governments.

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A.The truth in Sylvie Lemmet’s comments

B.A UN warning about chemical dangers

C.The unpredictable future of chemical industry

D.Preventing is much better than fixing

Whenever I hear a recording of John Denver singing “Sunshine on My Shoulders” I find myself smiling, drawn to a love of the sun and the outdoors I’ve had for years as a Michigan native. Walking barefoot to the lake, playing without shirts in the sunlight, and breathing fresh air feel good. As a doctor I can tell you they are also good for your heart.

Studies have found higher rates of high blood pressure among people with the lowest sun exposure. One reason may be due to nitric oxide (一氧化氮), a gas whose function is activated when your skin is exposed to the sun’s rays. It reduces both heart attack and stroke risks. Vitamin D, which sunlight helps your body produce, is also linked to better health. So walk outdoors for 15 to 30 minutes daily.

In Japan, walking through forests to keep healthy has become a popular practice. Apparently they want to enjoy the fresh air. But research on 280 volunteers found that people had a reduced heart rate, and lower blood pressure when they walked through a forest than when they spent time in an urban area.

One of the consequences of modern society is that rarely is our body in direct contact with the ground. The earth has an electrical current. Direct contact with it may be stabilizing force for good health. Although “earthing” or “grounding” is considered alternative by mainstream medicine, research shows that the practice seems to be able to reduce heart disease risks.

So, walk around barefoot wherever possible, let your backyard grass tickle your feet, and dig your toes into sandy beaches.

1.The first paragraph is meant to ________.

A.show the author likes the song very much

B.put forward the argument of the passage

A.the sun’s rays make nitric oxide work

B.sunlight can help people keep warm

C.the sun’s rays can help replace vitamin D

D.vitamin D reduces blood circulation

3.It’s believed that walking through forests can ________.

A.make people popular B.help breathe in fresh air

C.reduce blood pressure D.help escape noisy cities

4.The best title of the passage should be ________.

A.Nitric Oxide Has Magic Functions

B.Walking Barefoot Builds the Body

C.Sunbathing is Good for Health

D.Outdoor Activities Benefit the Heart

One stride at a time, Tom Panek and his guide dog, Gus, inch closer to their goal. The two have been training in local parks for more than three years with the hopes of competing in an official longdistance race. It’s never been done before. “I’ve been running my whole life. I ran on my crosscountry team in high school, and I ran as a young adult,” Panek said. He lost his sight 25 years ago. “When I lost my sight I was too scared to run,” Panek said.

As he adjusted to his blindness, he began running with a human guide, but it wasn’t the same. “Although many people run with running clubs, at the end of the day you’re running your own race. And when you’re tied to another person, it’s no longer your own race. The independence isn’t quite there,” Panek said.

Two years ago, Panek became the CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The idea of a running guide program was first suggested by Richard Hunter, who was blind and looking to get back in to running.

“Richard shouted out, ‘I’m really curious, have you ever trained a guide dog to run’ And I said, ‘I don’t know. It hasn’t been done,’” Panek said.

A few months and intense training sessions later, the running guide program was born. Panek and a small team helped train Klinger, a German shepherd, to aid Hunter with running.

He formed a team of experts to train a small group of dogs to run long distances. The dogs begin their training at 18 months old. It’s an exclusive club. Out of 165 graduate dogs, only about 12 are considered race ready.

The team’s final test would be a fivemile race through New York’s Central Park just one week before the New York City Marathon. It was Panek’s and Gus’s first competitive race. Before the race, Panek was overcome with emotion, wiping away his tears of appreciation to the dog who gave him his independence back.

“And crossing that finish line, you know it was a momentous (关键的) occasion for me,” Panek said.

1.How did Panek think of running with a human guide?

A.Inspiring. B.Challenging.

C.Rewarding. D.Disappointing.

2.What was Hunter curious about?

A.Training a dog guide to run. B.Getting back to run as a blind man.

C.Starting a running guide program. D.Running with a human guide.

3.Which of the following is mentioned in the article?

A.Dogs are reluctant to run long distances.

B.Few dogs are qualified to guide in running.

C.Some dogs are born to be a guide in races.

D.Dogs need to be trained for 18 months.

4.What does particular significance the final test have to Panek?

A.He won a big prize with Gus’ help.

B.His guide dog was treated well in the race.

C.He got his independence once again.

D.He ran to the finishing line without stopping.

Hi Jacob,

I' m really pleased you' re coming to stay with us soon. I have easy-going family of four and all of my parents are very approachable. They let me do more or less what we like as long as we tell them about it first. I've already been made a list of the most interesting thing to do and see when you're here. As you're keen on watch football, I’ve booked two tickets for a bigger match. We can explore the countrysidewhen we might see animals in the wild. Besides, since it’s true peaceful there, we can even camp for a night and two. And I can't wait to meet you!

We usually understand when someone speaks or writes to us, and many gestures and facial expressions have meaning, too. But have you ever considered what and how we eat as a form of communication?1.

In many cultures, people share food at meal times. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play an important role in a family or cultures celebrations or traditions.

In most cultures, bread represents nutrition.2.Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of companionship and togetherness.

Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. Most of the foods eaten during the Chinese New Year have symbolic significance. Sometimes this a based on their shape.  3.The symbolism can also be based on the sound of the word in Chinese. For instance, people give out oranges because the word for ”orange” sound like the word for “good luck”.

The invention of steel frames in the late 1800s meant that the walls did not carry the weight of a structure. This development meant that suddenly much taller buildings were possible, and they could be built quickly. Skyscrapers had been born, and they were about to change the face of our cities.

Since 1901 the world’s tallest building had always been a skyscraper and until 1974 this was always in New York. Only after the end of the century did the tallest building appear outside North America, with the opening of the first building to be more than half a kilometer tall, Taipei 101.

Tall building are seen as a symbol of success and status by many but they are not always popular with local residents. The construction of the Shard, the tallest building in London and in the entire European Union, has been highly controversial. It is only a few hundred meters across the River Thames from the Tower of London--one of the oldest and most famous landmarks in London. Many feel that such modern constructions should not be built near to historic sites.

London residents should hope that the opening of the Shard doesn’t lead to a major downtown in their economy. The Empire State Building was finished in 1931, very soon after Wall Street crashed. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur were built in 1988, just after the Asian financial crisis. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai was opened in early 2010, and shortly afterwards the emirate’s(酋长国的)investment company collapsed.

The Burj Khalifa might be the tallest structure in the world currently but its status is under threat from numerous planned buildings around the world. One tower which will probably never be built is the 4km high X-Seed 4000 in Tokyo. It was designed in 1995 to attract publicity rather than as a serious proposal, but who knows when such fanciful ideas could become a reality? The Burj Khalifa is more that double the height of the Empire State Building, and surely no one in 1931 would have imagined that.

1.What make the building of skyscrapers possible?

A.The using of the steel frames.

B.The improvement of the wall material.

C.The changing of the city face.

D.'The increase of the building height.

2.What is most Londoners' attitude towards the construction of the Shard?

A.Supportive. B.Uncooperative.

C.Acceptable. D.Critical.

3.How is paragraph 4 developed?

A.By analyzing possible reasons. B.By stating general characters.

C.By providing typical examples. D.By listing practical proposals.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Skyscrapers: symbol of success B.Skyscrapers: ideal buildings

C.The sky's fanciful ideas and reality D.The sky's the limit

Ultrasound(超声)is used widely in medical imaging, but in recent years scientists have started developing it for another use: stimulating nerves to treat disease. In two new studies in mice, researchers focused the sound waves on nerves in the spleen(脾)that communicate with the immune system, reducing symptoms. If the approach proves safe and effective in people, it could serve as a treatment for diseases such as arthritis(关节炎).

In one study, led by scientists at the Feistein Institute and GE Research, mice receiving a few minutes of ultrasound treatment to the spleen nerve had a diminished symptoms to an injected(注射)poison. In another study, researchers at the University of Minnesota and their colleagues reduces symptoms of arthritis in mice by stimulating their spleen nerves for 20 minutes every day for a week. “Zeroing in on the spleen may provide a more precise approach than focusing on the vagus nerve(交感神经), which connects with the immune system via a second nerve that stimulates the spleen.” says Hubert Lin, lead author of the latter study. “When we’re targeting the spleen we have less of an effect all over the body.”

“Little is known about how repeated ultrasound affects the spleen or whether it has other harmful effects,” says neuroscientist Denise Bellinger of Loma Linda University, who was not involved in either study. An ongoing clinical trial aims to assess the treatment’s safety in humans with arthritis. A bigger unknown is how ultrasound activates in general. Scientists are now exploring the use of ultrasound on other parts of the nervous system, including the brain. “We know how to control nerves with electricity, and we’ve been doing it for more than 100 years,” neuroscientist Kevin Tracey says, “But the idea of controlling nerve signals with ultrasound is a brand-new field.”

1.What do scientists expect of the new application of ultrasound?

A.It'll be applied in medical imaging

B.It'll be used to activate nerves to treat disease.

C.It’ll be applied in spleen transplantation.

D.It'll be employed to rebuild immune system.

2.What does the underlined word “diminished" in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Complicated. B.Worsened.

C.Decreased. D.Associated.

3.What is the concern of Denise Bellinger?

A.Side effect. B.Time length.

C.The procedure. D.The cost.

4.What is most likely the next step of the study?

A.Assessing the treatment' s safety on humans.

B.Activating nerves in general with ultrasound.

C.Exploring the use of ultrasound on the brain.

D.Controlling nerve signals with ultrasound.

With schools close in the UK during the COVID-19 outbreak, most children must now be homeschooled. Parents have found themselves not only having to balance work and having the children at home but also having to try and teach them. How can you keep your children focused while learning?

Nicola Anderson--Head of Customer Support at the UK’s leading online tutoring service MyTutor, provides new, up-to-date tips to hearten parents at this difficult time and advises how they can structure their children’s days.

One is to keep to a regular timetable so it still feels like your child is taking part in the school day. Ms Anderson said: “Children of all ages do well on routine and boundaries; schools provide this in abundance and it will most children feel secure and happy if they can follow a similar timetable for their homeschooling.”

Another tip is to create an environment which is favorable to learning. She said:” The environment should be free from distractions and ideally near to an open window, to provide them with appropriate levels of fresh air and natural light. Some children find it comfortable and helpful to have quiet, instrumental music playing in the background to help them to focus, but this isn’t for everyone.”

Using technology to help with your child’s learning is also advised. Many schools are offering online classes and resources to help and companies are reducing or even not charging their fees during this time.

It is also important to keep physical exercise as a part of your routine. Joe Wicks, otherwise known as The Body Coach, has been keeping kids healthy with daily 10 minute workouts for children on his Youtube channel. Ms Anderson said:” It can be anything from running around the garden, walking the dog, a game of football or dancing around your living room!”

1.Who is the text intended for?

A.Student. B.Teachers.

C.Coaches. D.Parents.

2.What does the underlined word“this" in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Homeschooling. B.Tutoring service.

C.A regular timetable. D.Difficult time:

3.What may Nicola Anderson agree?

A.To allow children to adjust schedule freely.

B.To offer children peaceful study environment.

C.To recommend high-tech to online schools.

D.To combine routine with kids' mental heath.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.How to improve homeschooling efficiency.

B.How to obtain online learning resources.

C.How to study attentively at home.

D.How to design a proper schedule.
