When we meet the homeless, most of us might avoid eye contact and walk a little faster. 1. What's his or her story? How long have they lived on the streets? Maybe you even wanted to help, but didn't know how to start a conversation. Then the following might help you.

2. Is there another way I can help?

This is an especially good thing to say if you're uncomfortable handing over cash or don't have any to offer. Undoubtedly, money is something that a homeless person needs, but often there is a specific thing that can quickly help that person out of a terrible situation.

Did you catch the game?

3. Talking about sports is a good idea. While there is a game, bring it up like talking about the weather — sports is a topic of conversation that you don't have to be of a certain class to experience.

Good morning.

Say “hi” or “hello” or try to acknowledge the person in some way. 4. Regardless of what your greeting may be, it's important to look the person in the eye when speaking. According to the homeless, one of the many difficult things about being homeless is that you feel less than human.

How are you doing? Would you like to talk?

These questions are great because they're open-ended. Don't be surprised if people are not interested in chatting, though. You're getting into their personal lives. 5. If, however, the person is open to talking, this can lead to a real conversation — and maybe even provide a way for you to offer help.

A.I don't have any money.

B.It's good to hear kindness.

C.But you might also think about the situation.

D.Maybe they don't want to discuss that with a stranger.

E.Athletic events are often shown on televisions on the streets.

F.The non-homeless person almost never looks the homeless in the eye.

G.Offering a wish of good will can be a powerful thing to the homeless.

People feel good about recycling, maybe even more so when it comes to electronics. While electronics recycling isn't bad, making it a panacea(万能药) for the e-waste problem we currently have certainly is. Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”.

A case in point: Apple. In 2016, there was lots of report on Liam, a robot able to dismantle(拆卸) an iPhone in just 11 seconds — a good way to recycle 1.2 million units a year. That sounds amazing until you take into account the fact that Apple had actually sold 231 million new iPhones the year before. Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field of high-tech: a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.

According to a recent UN report, the US produces about 6.3 million tons or 14% of the world's electronic waste. Worldwide, almost 45 million tons of electronic waste were produced in 2016. Among them, only 20% had been recycled in some shape or form. The remaining 80% made its way to a more environmentally damaging end at the landfill(垃圾填埋场).

Of course, we can say it's time to double our recycling efforts. However, the huge amount of e-waste is impossible to cope with. The UN report points out that while there is an increased focus on recycling today compared to the past, the effort to reuse used devices simply can't keep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices.

In their environmental responsibility report, Apple admits that 77% of the carbon footprint of their electronics comes from their manufacture, versus(相对于) 17% comes from its actual use. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.

1.Which of the following can best describe Liam?

A.It's useful but can't make a big difference.

B.It's energy-saving but too expensive.

C.It's well-made but won't become popular.

D.It's advanced but impractical.

2.What caused the e-waste recycling problem?

A.Few high-tech companies.

B.Not enough recycling efforts.

C.High demand for new electronics.

D.Difficult recycling processes.

3.What does the author think of the electronics recycling?

A.It is very effective.

B.It is quite good.

C.It is environmentally damaging.

D.It is far from “green” recycling.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.A Recent UN Report on E-Waste Problem

B.The Limitation of Electronics Recycling

C.A Good Way to Cope With E-Waste

D.The Responsibility for Apple to Decrease E-Waste

A trip to the theater, museum or art gallery could help you live longer. And the more often, the better, a new study suggests. Researchers from University College London (UCL) found that people engaged in the arts more frequently had a 31% lower risk of dying early when compared to those who didn't. Even going to the theater or museum once or twice a year was linked with a 14% lower risk.

“While other health behaviors like smoking, alcohol and exercise are undoubtedly bigger predictors of the rate of death, these leisure and pleasure activities people don't think as a health related activity do support good health and long life,” said Fancourt, an associate professor at UCL’s Research Department of Behavioral Science and Health.

How often an individual engaged in art activities, also including exhibitions, concerts and opera but not cinema, was measured at the start of the study in 2004 to 2005. The study looked at a range of economic, health and social factors to try and explain why there is a link between “arts engagement” and living longer, although as an observational study it can't establish cause. Part of the reason, the study said, comes down to social and economic differences among those who go and don't go to museums, exhibitions and art galleries. Wealth, they found, explained about 9% of the association. Cognitive(认知的) differences, social engagement and mental health also played a role.

“Things like free time and occupational status made no material difference,” said Fancourt, “but engagement in arts can reduce stress and build creativity that allows people to adapt to changing circumstances. It also helps people build social capital — accessing emotional support and information that helps people age more successfully. A greater sense of purpose could also play a role. If this (study) is added to the larger body of evidence, we are getting an increasingly rich picture on how arts can benefit health and it's not about one single outcome. It can have wide ranging benefits and support healthier lives lived longer.”

This study did not look at the effects of taking part in art-related activities but a World Health Organization review of available evidence published last year found that both receptive participation, like visiting a museum, and active participation, like singing in a choir, had health benefits.

1.How is the text mainly developed?

A.By giving examples.

B.By making a comparison.

C.By listing data.

D.By presenting facts.

2.What does the new study suggest?

A.Engagement in art activities could help people live longer.

B.Arts engagement plays a big part in people's good health.

C.Smoking, alcohol and exercise are good to people's health.

D.Smoking, alcohol and exercise could lower the risk of death.

3.Which of the following is not much of an art activity?

A.Going to the theatre.

B.Attending a concert.

C.Visiting the museum.

D.Watching a movie.

4.What can we infer from the text?

A.Arts engagement depends on whether we have free time.

B.Social and economic differences affect our arts engagement greatly.

C.Participating in art activities can bring us many health benefits.

D.This new study is scientifically confirmed.

Craig Blackburn, a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son’s hope for using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son's hope after seeing the children's reaction to the Batmobile.

Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.

Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.

Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower(喷火器) onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn's son for his hope.

“It was great. It was so good to see the kids' and adults' excitement at seeing the Batmobile.” Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.

1.What is Craig Blackburn's initial purpose of making the Batmobile?

A.To realize his son's dream.

B.To donate it to sick children.

C.To pay his respects to the film Dark Knight.

D.To show off at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba.

2.How did Blackburn feel about the car-making at first?

A.Hopeful.

B.Uncertain.

C.Impossible.

D.Confused.

3.How did Blackburn's friend help him?

A.By offering him financial support.

B.By making an outer shell for him.

C.By sharing the knowledge of building cars.

D.By telling him the backgroud of the car factory.

4.What is the car lovers' expectation of the Batmobile?

A.It can be displayed around the world.

B.It will be driven soon on the roads.

C.It can change the lives of sick children.

D.It will appear in the next film about Batman.

I wanted to give my mother something specially as a birthday gift. At a shop, I saw a beautiful pearl necklace (项链) which would have been ideal, and it was too expensive. My shoulder dropped and I left the shop, disappointing. The next day, I was walking along the beach near my home when I notice a beautiful shell. I thought that I should make a necklace use seashells, so I collected some. I started to make it when I got home, hoping they would be as beautiful as the pearl one what I had seen at the shop. I gave my mother the necklace on her birthday, and she was delighted to receive such beautiful gift and praised me to being creative.

Here are five cooking habits that could be costing you important nutrients, causing you to overeat——or even making you sick.

Boiling vegetables

A 2015 review showed that boiling vegetables resulted in a high loss of vitamin C. 1. "If you're not drinking a soup, you're missing out on nutrients," says Nishta Saxena, a dietitian based in Toronto .

Washing chicken

While your favourite old cookbooks likely tell you to wash a chicken before cooking, this outdated advice is a safety risk. Cleaning meat in water may remove some of the bacteria, but it's also likely to pass it around your kitchen. 2. And clean your hands after you've finished the cooking.

Removing skins from fruits and vegetables

"Large amounts of nutrients are found in the skins." says Liz Powell, who is a dietitian from Vancouver. " Concern about chemical remains isn't a good enough reason to do the removing. 3."

Mixing everything

A smoothie (a mixed drink) is a smart way to eat some greens. 4. They're often short of protein and healthy fat. These things work together to keep us feeling full and satisfied. Without them, it's not really a balanced meal, Powell suggests adding some foods which contain protein or having a piece of wholewheat(全麦的)bread on the side.

Overdressing salads

We think we can add anything to salads, and they'll still be a nutritious choice. But it's just not true. If you're topping your bowl with dried strawberries and sweet cheese, you've easily added 30 grams of sugar to your so-called healthy lunch. 5.

A. You should choose healthy produce for your family.

B. But these kinds of drinks are likely to be unbalanced.

C. To stay safe, don't wash the meat when preparing it.

D. Cabbage. for example, loses about 33 % of its vitamin C.

E. Nuts are better choices to improve the taste of your greens.

F. The skins of potatoes contain more nutrients than its inside part.

G. Washing your produce will remove some chemicals from the surface.

People spend about a third of their life sleeping and cannot survive without it. But while scientists have long understood the importance of getting enough sleep, the key part played by light exposure can sometimes be overlooked (忽视). The reason why light is so important is that it sets our body clock, through specialized light sensors within the eye. Our eye detects the light and dark cycle within our environment and adjusts the body clock so that the inner and outer day coincide (相符). This is so powerful that people who have eye damage can find their body clock is thrown off, leading to sleep problems.

Without any access to light, the human body clock appears to change, adding about half an hour on to its 24-hour cycle for each day of darkness. Jet lag (飞行时差反应) is the most obvious example of the effect light can have. Exposure to light in the new time zone helps reset our body clock to local time, telling us the right time to sleep.

In 1800, most people across the world worked outside and were exposed to the change from day to night. Today, many of us miss out on the natural environment as we mostly work inside. We have become a light-deprived (光照不足的) species, and this has far-reaching consequences for the quality of our sleep, and consequently our well-being. The proper amount varies from person to person, but we do know that our bodies need exposure to very bright light that most indoor lighting does not provide. One notable side effect is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression thought to affect 2-8% of Europeans, which is linked to lack of sunlight exposure.

Research in this area could help people make informed choices. Simply by reducing light exposure before going to bed, and trying to get as much morning light as possible, they could improve their sleep and well-being.

1.What does the underlined part “it” in the first paragraph refer to?

A.The sensor. B.Sleep.

C.Light. D.The eye.

2.Why is jet lag mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A.To show people in different time zones have different sleep patterns.

B.To advise frequent fliers to get plenty of sun to avoid discomfort.

C.To prove irregular light and dark cycles affect our body clock.

D.To explain why our body clock has a 24-hour cycle.

3.What can we learn about SAD from the text?

A.It comes along with cold temperatures. B.It results from a lack of natural light.

C.It affects people living on islands. D.It happens mainly in summer.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy.

B.Natural light is the key to a good night’s sleep.

C.Our body clock is linked to the mood disorder.

D.Life is really hard for nightbirds.

Taking paternity leave (陪产假) shortly after the birth of a new son or daughter may be the key to developing strong father-child bonds that last for years, says new research from Ball State University.

“We find that 9-year-olds report greater satisfaction with father involvement,” said Richard Petts, a Ball State sociology professor who carried out the research with Chris Knoester at the Ohio State University and Jane Waldfogel at Columbia University. “They feel closer to their fathers and report better communication with their dads if their fathers take paternity leave, and especially if their fathers take two or more weeks of leave.”

“We found evidence that part of the reason why two or more weeks of paternity leave may lead to 9-year-olds expressing greater satisfaction seems to be that longer periods of paternity leave-taking link to parental relationship satisfaction,” said Petts.

The study is the latest in a series examining the effects of parental leave in the development of children and its influence on the family. It is also the first research known to assess the associations between paternity leave and children’s opinions of father-child relationship quality in the United States, Petts said.

Petts said the findings of the study will help families and policymakers (政策制定者) who aim to strengthen families and improve higher quality father-child relationships.

The present structure (结构) of paternity leave in the United States provides limited opportunities for fathers to take leave and, in fact, often discourages fathers from taking leave, he said.

“The possibility to take leave is often limited to higher-income families,” Petts said. “A lack of a national paid family leave policy limits access to important benefits for American families. The present structure may be increasing inequalities.” Petts said that providing equal access to paternity leave may help to change these patterns and strengthen family relationships.

1.How was the research probably carried out?

A.By tracking families. B.By talking with mothers.

C.By interviewing the kids. D.By recording children’s behavior.

2.What is found about paternity leave?

A.It makes young kids become dependent.

B.It is determined by parental relationships.

C.It encourages men to become better fathers.

D.It improves father-child relationship quality.

3.What do we know about the research?

A.It is welcomed by young fathers. B.It is the first to study parental leave.

C.It is probably helpful to policymakers. D.It is more important than similar studies.

4.What is the problem with the present structure of paternity leave in the US?

A.Paid paternity leave is only two weeks long.

B.There is no policy to encourage paternity leave.

C.Low-income families think little of paternity leave.

D.High-income fathers are too busy to take paternity leave.

Being deaf in a hearing world can lead to painful feelings of isolation (孤独).

Waitress Kelsey recently shared an experience on a social media sharing site that  quickly zoomed (陡直上升) to the top of the “ front page of the Internet”. In her brief post, Kelsey explained that she waits tables at a bar during the evenings, and one night she noticed a deaf man sitting alone in her section (区域).

When Kelsey isn’t working at the bar she makes a good hourly pay doing sign language interpretation (翻译), so she sensed an opportunity to use her skill to make this customer feel a little less alone in the world. She approached his table and began chatting with him in sign language.

When the table next to his noticed their silent conversation they asked Kelsey how long she’d been signing. They had a brief conversation about her goal of becoming certified (合格的) to interpret sign language in a medical or mental health setting. She didn’t think much about the whole exchange until the customers had left the restaurant and she was tidying up the tables. There, on the table of the customers who’d seen her American sign language conversation with the deaf man, was a handwritten note on the receipt.

“Thank you for what you do; it absolutely matters!” the note said. “Good luck with finishing your degree!” Not only that, but they’d left her a $100 tip.

Kelsey was moved by the kind note, especially because she wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. To her, she was just conversing with someone in a language that only they understood. Yet to the deaf man and the people seated next to him she’d bridged a gap and helped someone who probably feels lonely a lot of the time.

Kelsey shared the note on the Internet to spread more love and light in the world.

1.What do we know about Kelsey’s work at the bar

A.It is her part-time job.

B.It goes beyond her ability.

C.It requires her to work all day long.

D.It offers her a chance to learn sign language.

2.What can we infer about the deaf man?

A.He left Kelsey $100 as a tip.

B.He could use sign language.

C.He found it hard to communicate with Kelsey.

D.He was a friend of the customers at the next table.

3.What did the people at the table next to the deaf man think of Kelsey?

A.She is wasting time working as a waitress. B.She needs to study further for a degree.

C.She should use the Internet as a tool. D.She is so kind to serve those in need.

4.What lesson can we learn from Kelsey’s experience?

A.Practice makes perfect. B.It is never too late to learn.

C.Kindness is repaid with kindness. D.When in Rome, do as Romans do.

One snowy daythe winds grew stronger and the snow turned into a blinding snowstorm. A farmer sat down to relax before the fire for the evening. Then he heard a loud knocksomething hitting against the window. He looked outside but could not see anything. So he went outside for a better view. In the field near his house he sawof all the strangest thingsa group of swans(天鹅).

They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down southbut they had been caught in the snowstorm. The storm had become too blinding and violent for the swans to fly or see their way. They were trapped on his farmwith no food or shelterunable to do more than wave their wings and fly in aimless circles. He had compassion for them and wanted to help them.

He thought to himselfthe barn(谷仓)would be a great place for them to stay. It was warm and safesurely they could spend the night and wait out the storm. So he opened the barn doors for them. He waitedwatching themhoping they would notice the open barn and go inside.

Howeverthey did not notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them. He moved closer toward them to get their attentionbut they just moved away from him out of fear. He went into the house and came back with some breadbroke it upand made a bread trail to the barn. They still did not catch on.

Starting to get frustratedhe went over and tried to drive them toward the barn. They panicked and scattered into every direction except toward the barn. Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn where there was warmthsafetyand shelter. Feeling totally frustratedhe exclaimed“Why don’t they follow me?Can’t they see this is the only place where they can survive the storm? How can I possibly get them into the one place to save them?”

There are actually three common types of pink eye (红眼病), medically known as conjunctivitis (结膜炎). Two-viral and bacterial-can spread from person to person. The third, allergic, involves your surrounding environment.

How does pink eye start? An infected person touches his or her eyes, then touches something else. If you touch that person or object and then your eyes, you can contract the same infection. That includes shaking hands, sharing towels or pillows, or even papers if you work in an office job. So when it comes to how to get pink eye, not washing your hands-and frequently touching your face-can both play a big role. Pink eye can also spread when you use old makeup or share makeup. In fact, if someone in your household develops bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, replace or at least wash everything you can, including sheets, towels, taps, and other bathroom equipment.

Contact lens (隐形眼镜) is another common way to develop bacterial conjunctivitis. Always wash and dry your hands before handling your contacts. Use the solution and storage methods recommended by your eye doctor. All these steps become even more important if someone in your household already has pink eye. If you do develop conjunctivitis yourself, take your contacts out and throw them away. Wear glasses until your doctor gives you the OK to put your lenses back in. And clean your glasses frequently too. When it’s time to wear contacts again, start with a new pair.

Unlike bacterial and viral conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis is caused by something in your surrounding environment. You might develop symptoms during allergy season in the spring or fall, caused by the same flowers or trees that cause hay fever. This adds the difficulties to the prevention of conjunctivitis.

While not every case of pink eye requires medical treatment, doctor recommends that anyone with a sudden start of these symptoms see a doctor. Some cases can turn serious, and symptoms can be similar to those of other vision-threatening eye conditions

The spiders have long, scary legs. Some spiders even bite. But Spider-Man is another story. He might help people see spiders less negatively, a new study finds.

After Menachem Ben-Ezra, a proud fan of the Marvel (漫威漫画公司)films and also a psychologist. saw the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp (黄蜂), lie walked out with a sudden scientific idea that he should measure people before they went into the theater, and afterwards to see if the fear of ants would be reduced or changed.

Ben-Ezra and his colleagues asked 424 people questions, about one-quarter of them about spiders, such as “Did they find them scary?” “Did seeing one make their hearts race and palms sweat?” A second group received similar questions, this time about ants. The last two groups got the same questions about other insects. Afterward, everyone watched videos. Group one got a Spider-Man movie. Group two saw Ant-Man and the Wasp. Groups three and four watched unrelated video-wheat waving peacefully in the breeze.

After viewing the movie, Ben-Ezra again asked the participants how they felt about spiders, ants or insects in general-and found the ant and spider exposures seemed to make people insensitive and less afraid. Between 3.5 and 6.1 percent of people experience such a phobia (恐惧症) of spiders. Phobias can stop people from traveling, working and enjoying their lives.

Ben-Ezra hopes that their movie research might help people with phobias. But they caution that people with phobias shouldn’t just run out and watch movies and expect their fears to go away. “What we did is only the first step in a very long road.” Ben-Ezra says. “We didn’t say you’ll be cured. We don’t have evidence for that.” But eventually, presenting people’s fears in a positive context-such as a superhero movie—might help people surmount their fear or disgust. After all, if spiders produce Spicier-Man, maybe they’re not so bad.

1.How did Ben-Ezra conduct the study?

A.By doing lab experiments. B.By asking questions.

C.By analyzing former data. D.By observation.

2.What does the underlined word“surmount” in the last paragraph mean?

A.They should not try to face their phobias.

B.They should travel, work and enjoy their lives.

C.They should adopt a positive attitude to their fear.

D.They must keep away from the insects they fear.

4.What is the best title for the text?

Portugal’s most beautiful seaside destinations

The long coastline of Portugal is extraordinarily diverse. Wind your way along it and you will find true Portugal, its history, its heart and its soul.

Cascais

Originally a little whitewashed fishing village, Cascais became a summer residence for wealthy noblemen in the late 19th century. It is now a busy, modern town, but along its shoreline,it still has palatial villas (富丽堂皇的别墅), many of which have been turned into hotels, and its pretty town square and old streets have kept their character.

Comporta

This little village has, until recently, been a secret of the experts. With hotels now starting to open, the locals make the most of it before the crowds come. Blue waters wash such-picture-perfect white sands that it’s hard to believe you’re in Europe: walk the beach at sunset, or weave your way on horseback through the green rice fields before a meal of the freshest of fish on the seashore.

Zambujeira do Mar

Standing between the fierce Atlantic and the plains of the Alentejo, the little fishing village of Zambujeira do Mar has one of the regions most beautiful beaches, backed by high rock cliffs. For five days in August, one of Portugal’s biggest youth music festivals, MEO Sudoeste, is held here. Dates for 2020 are August 4-8.

Lagos

White-washed Lagos manages to maintain its character and charm while offering a lively nightlife for locals and tourists. An important naval centre in the 15th century, Lagos was also capital of the Algarve from 1576-1756. Extensively damaged in the 1755 earthquake, the town now consists of mostly 18th and 19th-century buildings. Visit Santo Antonio Church for its blue and white tiles and gilded (镀金的) woodwork.
