Will you stop using plastic?

If you take a look around your kitchen or office right now, chances are that you’ll notice you’re surrounded by plastic—water bottles, to-go coffee cups, straws (吸管), plastic grocery bags, food wrappers, take-out containers, single-serve coffee pods and produce bags. 1.

It’s certainly not realistic to remove all plastic from your life, but let’s examine some statistics that may encourage you to reduce your single-use plastic footprint by throwing away straws, switching to reusable water bottles, bringing cloth bags to the grocery store and more.

According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, the popularity of plastic, which began rising in the 1950s, is growing out of control. 2. And there’s no sign of slowing down, considering scientists say that another 12 trillion kilograms will be produced worldwide by 2050.

“Every piece of plastic that has ever been created will remain in the environment in some form, but once we conveniently throw out our rubbish at home, wind and runoff carry our waste from landfills and streets to the ocean,” says Mystic Aquarium’s chief clinical veterinarian Jennifer Flower, DVM, MS. “Given that we are globally producing over 320 million tons of plastic annually, the marine environment is taking a big hit from our daily disposal of plastic.

3. For example, newborn fish are mistaking tiny bits of plastic waste for food. If they die, there will be fewer big fish—and that could damage the food chain. Often our society is so focused on making our lives more convenient in the short term, but in the long run, our health and the health of marine life are at the expense of those everyday conveniences.”

4. A recent report suggests that when heated, certain food additives (添加剂) can damage hormones, growth and development, as well as increase chances for children of being fat. 5. It is found in plastic containers and metal cans. Parents are urged to avoid using microwaves to warm food and drinks or placing plastics in the dishwasher.

A. Our plastic consumption is directly affecting the life in the ocean.

B. People are concerned about the results of overusing plastic containers.

C. 8.2 trillion kilograms of plastic have been produced around the world.

D. Using plastic containers in microwaves is also harmful to children’s health.

E. Let’s stop using plastic for the benefit of the environment and human beings.

F. These are all examples of single-use plastic products, which is a hot topic nowadays.

G. The most concerning artificial additive BPA is a chemical used in the production of plastics.

You know the saying “You’re as young as you feel." Well, there may be some truth to that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4,421 men found that those who became bald at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2,017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote.

The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.

Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis (假说) that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism(机制) remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health."

1.What’s the author’s attitude towards the research results?

A.Negative. B.Indifferent.

C.Supportive. D.Objective.

2.Which of the following statements is true according to paragraph 3?

A.Blood pressure is highly related to hairdos.

B.Getting cancer or heart disease is the cause of hair losing.

C.Feeling older than real age may be tied to health problems.

D.The women who love hairdos look younger than those don’t.

3.It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ________.

A.often staying with younger people can benefit people's health

B.the younger one of a couple lives much longer

C.a younger mother is more likely to live longer

D.people who want to live longer need to marry

4.The passage mainly tells us that ________.

A.Getting bald too early is not good for health

B.People’s feeling of their age may have an effect on their own health

C.Feeling younger to a couple is very important to their health

D.Women had better give birth later in their life

Pangolins (穿山甲) are the most trafficked (非法交易) mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly (有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation. Partnering with the non-profit organization Pangolin. Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal’s habitats.

Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, "One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant."

Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.

Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.

Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men on a mission to get all four species of African pangolin on camera for the very first time.

1.What is the purpose of the documentary?

A.To study the situation of pangolins.

B.To collect fund to protect pangolins.

C.To raise awareness of pangolin protection.

D.To propose setting up pangolin reserves.

2.What is the meaning of the underlined word “fussy” in paragraph 2?

A.Picky. B.Messy.

C.Showy. D.Heavy.

3.What’s the documentary mainly about?

A.The illegal trade of pangolins.

B.The medical function of pangolin's scales.

C.The life of pangolins in their natural habitats.

D.The efforts of Pangolin, Africa to save pangolins.

4.Where is the text most likely from?

Some people believe that a Robin Hood is at work, others that a wealthy person simply wants to distribute his or her fortune before dying. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causesaccompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales (童话)

A Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie Doherty

The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.

The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”

The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents (养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically.

The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.

The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”

1.What is the main theme of the novel?

A.Life with foster parents. B.Life in the world of diving.

C.A journey of self-discovery. D.A travel around the country.

2.What do the coach’s words in Paragraph 2 suggest?

A.James is a successful diver. B.James is an independent young man.

C.James is an outgoing young man. D.James is a hopeful swimmer.

3.The snake stone in the novel is       .

A.a stone with an address on it B.a fossil left by the foster parents

C.a gift from the swimming coach D.a clue left by the birth mother

I just counted how many foreign languages I've studied so far in my life and it's been twelve!

I always follow my interests and find ways to put my language learning into things I'm already interested in.I like to read blogs(博客)in other languages.1. .For the most partbloggers tend to write the same way they speakso I dont have to worry much about adopting strange terms that are only used in writing.

Movies are also a really good toolespecially if you can find subtitles in the language youre learning.2.they will still keep your brain listening and reading in the same language.Music is another way to start listening to things in your new language.PersonallyI'm so bad at understanding lyrics(歌词)even in Englishso this one doesnt really work for mebut I have friends who learn a language through lyrics.Games are of course also an excellent way of studying a new language.A lot of language learning computer programs include games.I'm super competitive and if I play any of themI can be hooked for hours.3. .

When the initial excitement of learning a new language begins to fadeit can be hard to stick with it.The hardest bit for me is when I'm comfortable enough with a language to understand most things and make myself understood.I'm actually stuck at this stage in Norwegian.4. .Ideally I should sign up to take a big language exam. Each time I start getting self-satisfiedit's time to take a new course or sign up for online lessonsor take up some sort of challenge that will require me to level up my skills.

5. .The best language class I've ever taken was my beginners Russian course at university where my professor never used any English. It got to the point where I would kind of just forget about English while in Russian classwhich helped me to really immerse myself in the Russian language and do a whole lot with the limited Russian I had.

A.Thats really uncomfortable

What’s small, buzzes here and there and visits flowers? If you said bees or hummingbirds, you got it. You wouldn’t be the first if you mixed the two up. Now a group of researchers even say we should embrace our history of considering the two together in the same group. The way scientists study bees could help them study hummingbird behavior, too.

Scientists first compared the two back in the 1970s when studying how animals search for food. The idea is that animals use a kind of math to make choices in order to minimize the work it takes to earn maximum rewards. Researchers at the time focused on movement rules, like the order in which they visited flowers, and where flowers were located relative to others. It was “almost like an algorithm(算法)” for efficient searching, said David Pritchard, a biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Hummingbirds and bees had similar solutions.

As the field of animal cognition(认知) appeared, hummingbird and bee research parted. Neuroscientists and behavioral ecologists developed ways to study bee behavior in naturalistic settings. Hummingbird researchers compared hummingbirds to other birds and borrowed methods from psychology to study their ability to learn in the lab. To be fair, hummingbirds and bees differ. For example, hummingbirds have more advanced eyes and brains than bees. Honeybees and bumblebees are social; hummingbirds typically aren’t.

But however they perceive(感知) or process information, they both experience similar information, Dr. Pritchard said. In day-to-day searching for food, for example, hummingbirds may rely on more of a bee’s-eye view than a bird’s-eye view. Like other birds, they rely on landmarks, distances and directions to make maps when travelling long distances, but they don’t use these cues to find flowers. Move a flower just an inch or so away from where a hummingbird thought it was and it will hover over the flower’s original location. Dr. Pritchard is investigating if, like bees, hummingbirds engage in view matching — hovering, scanning snapshots of a place to its memory and using those as references later.

1.What is the center of research on hummingbirds and bees in the 1970s?

A.Memory.

B.Movement rules.

A.Math.

B.Biology.

C.Ecology.

D.Psychology.

3.How do researchers find out that hummingbirds are not like birds?

A.By setting them free.

B.By moving flowers.

C.By matching view.

D.By making maps.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Hummingbirds and Bees

B.Hummingbirds in the Lab

C.New Trends in Studying Bees

D.Thinking of Hummingbirds as Bees

We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours—about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day—at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be, mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.

Blue light is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue—light—blocking glasses are so popular. So, do the glasses work?

“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,” Dr.Rahul Khurana, a clinical spokesman, told Business Insider.

Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eyestrain(眼疲劳). More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So, if eyestrain is the real issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.

1.What do we know about blue light?

A.It has the shortest wavelength.

B.It’s a kind of nuclear radiation.

C.It consumes a great deal of energy.

D.It may come from electronic devices.

2.What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?

A.Evidence of their benefits to eyes.

B.Widespread use of smart devices.

C.Belief in blue light’s harmful effect.

D.Scientific understanding of blue light.

3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.Rubbing eyes makes people strained.

B.Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.

C.Blue light may connect with tired eyes.

D.Eye problems are not easy to deal with.

4.According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be _______.

A.useless B.harmful C.tiring D.beneficial

Today show's Kathie Lee Gifford is hoping to bring the story of David to a new generation with her latest musical project, The Little Giant.

The 13-song album tells the story of the shepherd (牧羊人) boy who defeated a giant with five stones and a slingshot and became a king. The idea of the record came after Gifford and her husband Frank went on a life-changing trip to the Holy Land in 2012.

Gifford hoped to shine light on David's story to help a new generation find their own purpose; it's why she decided to compose this album that invites kids to hear the tale of the shepherd in a fun and educational way. Gifford based the record's opening track What is Your Stone on bravery and faith. She hopes the songs can help children find confidence in themselves.

Though the album is aimed towards families and children, Gifford found recording the story of David to be an exercise in healing after the death of her beloved husband Frank who passed away two years ago.

"I catch myself saying that I lost him sometimes," Gifford says, "No, he hasn't been gone. The trip took root in my husband's life, because he truly came to understand exactly what David did."

Gifford says the trip and the teachings stayed with her husband until his death. For the next three years, when people came to visit us, they’d always see Frank's trophy (奖杯) room because it's like a museum," Gifford explained. "He would take them over. Instead of all of his trophies, he would point to the stones we brought back from the travelling destination and talk about them. "

Gifford expects her own journey, her new album and her commitment to bringing a bit of joy to people through her show can help inspire children to discover their own faith and purpose.

A strong vocabulary helps develop understanding, communication, and reading ability. 1. Consider the following tips on helping your child develop an impressive vocabulary.

Let Your Child Tell the Story

Perhaps you read nightly to your child or take turns doing so. Of course, this is an excellent way to expand reading and vocabulary skills. 2.. Then, let your child charge the end of the rope of his imagination wherever his imagination leads.

3.

You need to take active role. If you want your children’s language skills to improve, take their vocabulary questions seriously. When they express curiosity about a word, be sure to teach the correct definition and pronunciation.

Correct Mistakes with Care

4. However, it is essential not to scold them when they make such mistakes. Rather, point out what they got right, and then review the proper way to use then speak the word. The more fun and positive an experience, the more interested and able your children will be in expanding their vocabulary.

Do Be Patient

You may need to repeat words and meanings many times before your child fully grasps the concept. This is completely normal. 5. Children develop at their own paces. The most important thing is to honor and balance their needs so that learning does not become a struggle. While you want them to get ahead, you do not want them to develop pressure with trying to do so.

A.Try Your Best to Correct Them

B.Pay More Attention to Your Kid’s Vocabulary

C.It is natural for children to mispronounce or misuse new words.

D.It is important for children to mispronounce new words while learning.

E.That is why parents should do what they can do help kids learn new words.

One sunny afternoon in the autumn of the year 1861, a soldier lay in bushes by the side of a road in western Virginia, America. He lay at full length upon his stomach, his head upon his left forearm. His right hand loosely grasped his gun. But for the slight rhythmic movement of his back, he might have been thought to be dead. He was asleep at his post of duty. But if found, he would be dead shortly afterward, death being the legal punishment for his crime.

The sleeping soldier was a young Virginian named Carter Druse. He was the son of wealthy parents, an old child. His home was but a few miles from where he now lay. One morning he rose from the breakfast table and said seriously:’ Father, the Union army has arrived at Graton. I am going to join it. ‘

The father lifted his head, looked at his son a moment in silence, and replied,’ Go Carter, and whatever may occur, do what you consider to be your duty. Virginia, which you betray, must get on without you. If we both live to the end of the war, we will speak further of the matter.’

So Carter Druse, bowed to his father and left the home of his childhood. His bravery won him his selection for his present duty at the extreme post. Nevertheless, he fell asleep, exhausted. What good or bad angel came in a dream to awake him from his state of crime, who shall say? He quietly raised his forehead from his arm and looked between the bushes.

His first feeling was a great artistic delight. On the cliff(悬崖) was a man sitting on a horse, straight and soldierly. The face of the rider turned slightly away; he was looking downward to the bottom of the valley.

Fully awake and keenly alive now, Druse cautiously (谨慎地) pushed the gun forward through the bushes and covered a spot of horseman’s breast. A touch upon the trigger(扳机)  and all would have bene well with Druse. At that moment, the horseman turned and looked in his direction—seemed to look into his very face, into his eyes, into his brave heart.

Druse grew pale; his whole body shook. His hand fell away from his weapon, and his head slowly dropped until his face rested on the leaves.

The duty of the soldier was clear—the man must be shot dead. But no –there is a hope; he may have discovered nothing—perhaps he is but admiring the beauty of the landscape. Druse looked downward. He saw some foolish soldiers watering their horses in the open!

Druse fixed his eyes again upon the group of man and horse in the sky, and again it was through the sights of his gun. But this time his aim was at the horse. In his memory rang the words of his father,’ Whatever may occur, do what you consider to be your duty.’

He fired.

Ten minutes had passed when a Federal officer came to him cautiously.

‘Did you fire?’ the officer whispered.

‘ Yes.’

‘ At what?’

‘A horse. It was standing on the rock. You see it is no longer there. It went over the cliff.’

‘ The soldier’s face was white, but he showed no other sign of emotion. Having answered, he turned away his eyes and said no more. The officer did not understand.

‘See here, Druse,’ he said, ‘ It is no use making a mystery. I order you to report. Was there anybody on the horse?’

‘Yes.’

‘Well?’

‘My father.’

The term "dark tourism" is far newer than the practice, which long existed before Pompeii became a dark attraction. Dr. Philip Stone, perhaps the world’s leading expert on dark tourism, considers the Roman Colosseum as one of the first dark tourist sites, where people travelled long distances to watch death as sport. Later, until the late 18th century, the appeal was crueler still in central London, where people paid money to watch mass hangings. Pies would be sold at the site, which was where Marble Arch(大理石拱门)stands today.

It was only in 1996 that "dark tourism"entered the scholarly vocabulary when two professors in Glasgow applied it while looking at sites related to the murder of John F. Kennedy. Those who study dark tourism give plenty of reasons for the growing phenomenon(现象), including raised awareness of it as a recognizable thing. Access to sites has also improved with the arrival of cheap air travel. It is hard to imagine that the Auschwitz-Birkenau memoir and museum would now welcome more than two million visitors a year without its nearness to Krakow’s international airport. Peter Hohenhaus, a widely travelled dark tourist based in Vienna, also points to the sharp rise in off-the-beaten-track tourism, beyond the territory of popular guidebooks. "A lot of people don't want mainstream(主流) tourism and that often means visiting places that have a more recent history than, say, a Roman ruin." he says. You go to Sarajevo and most people remember the war being in the news, so it feels closer to one’s own biography(传记).’

Hohenhaus is also a fan of "beauty in decay(腐朽)," the current cultural movement in which urban ruins have become subject matter for expensive coffee-table books and a thousand Instagram accounts. The combination with death is clear. "I have always been drawn to ruined thing," the 54-year-old says. But while, like any tourism, dark tourism at its best is educational, the example of Grenfell Tower( a London tower block, destroyed by a fire in 2017 with 71 deaths) suggests the unease felt at some sites. "I remember the Lonely Planet Bluelist book had a chapter about dark tourism a while ago and one of the rules was ‘don't go back to early."Hohenhaus says." I will be interested to see Grenfell Tower up close. I can see the attraction. But I would not stand in the street taking a selfie merrily."

One feature of a successful business is its ability to employ creativity to push into new territory (领域). Those with staying power, however, have mastered an often-ignored factor that allows them to focus on the future: empathy(共情). While that may surprise many, I am certain that the ability to connect with and relate to others is the force that moves business forward.

Though the concept of empathy might go against the modern concept a traditional workplace—competitive, the reality is that for business leaders to experience success, they need to not just see or hear the activity around them, but also relate to the people around.

Some may think they can achieve their goals without much thought for other people. This attitude works for some, but at some point-often sooner rather than later—everyone needs to depend on their relationships and build personal and professional connections. Successful people do not operate alone; each of us needs the support of others to achieve positive results that push us forward our goals.

Effectively understanding empathy involves regarding it as each person’s connection to the people and marketplace. A biological principle(原理) known as co-evolution (共同进化)explains that the adaptation of an organism (有机体)is caused by the change of a related object. Similarly, business and their leaders participate in co-evolution-type relationships. Business success depends on empathetic leaders who are able to adapt, build on the strengths around them, and relate to their environment. When businesses fail, it is often because leaders have stopped focusing on understanding their environment and instead stay separated in their own operations.

To develop an effective workforce, we must be willing to give in and meet people where they are. This can be uncomfortable, particularly when you feel like your position makes more sense or offers a better solution. A significant part of developing empathy, however, is learning to understand, respect and adopt another person’s point of view rather forcing your own.
