After a long day at work, coming home is a breath of fresh air. Home is a comfortable place to sit back and relax. 1. Below are a number of things we can do to create a healthy home environment that will help to ease the workday stress and promote our physical and mental health.

Cleaning the house regularly is the first thing we should do. It may seem like a tiring thing to clean but there is a reason for doing so. We can remove dust by cleaning the house. Leaving layers of dust everywhere means that there is a build-up of dust. And where do these layers of dust go?2.

Making sure the rooms are full of sunlight is also important. We may not realize it but sunlight is an important part of our growth. We all know that sunlight promotes better working conditions. 3. Think about using a Parans system where sunlight does not reach. This technology gathers the sunlight by using solar panels. It can send out sunlight wherever we are.

4. Going green will help to remove toxins(毒素)in the air. They also give off oxygen, which can lower stress and improve our moods.

Along the lines of being green, it can also be vital to think about what things we are bringing into the house. Try to avoid specific plastics that are harmful to health. 5. They may contain poisonous chemicals that can be breathed in, or simple absorbed through the skin.

E. The same thing applies to things like carpets and paint.

F. Besides, it can reduce both stress and high blood pressure.

G. It is acknowledges that a greener lifestyle is linked to better health.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly expunge, the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. They are not sure to what degree people’s memories are affected.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions.” Said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.”

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure we want to wipe those memories out.” Said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

1.What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean?

C.reserve D.remove

2.The drug tested on people can ______.

A.cause the brain to fix memories

B.stop people remembering bad experiences

C.prevent body producing certain chemicals

D.wipe out the emotional effects of memories

3.We can learn from the passage that ______.

A.all people don’t support the use of the pills

B.the pill will stop people’s bad experiences

C.taking the pill will do harm to people’s health

D.the pill has probably been produced in America

4.Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with?

A.Some memories can ruin people’s lives.

B.People want to get rid of bad memories.

C.Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.

D.The pill will reduce people’s sufferings from bad memories.

The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic device such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.

RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has recommended that all airlines ban such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights.

The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft’s computers. Experts know that portable device emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.

The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud.

1.The passage is mainly about _____.

A.a new regulation for an airlines

B.the drawbacks of electronic devices

C.a possible cause of aircraft incidents

D.effective safety measures for air flight

2.What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?

A.They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.

B.They may have taken place during take-off and landing.

C.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers’ portable computers.

D.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.

3.Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because ______.

A.they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interference

B.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved

C.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette players

D.they have other effective safety measures to fall back on

4.It can be inferred from the passage that the author _____.

A.hasn’t expressed his own opinion on this problem

B.has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference

C.is in favor of prohibiting passengers’ use of electronic devices completely

D.regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight

People across the world use Airnbn to offer their homes to travelers usually for a nightly fee. The home-sharing service provides some people a way to make extra money while they work other jobs.

The company announced recently that one of its most popular professions among American Airbnb hosts is teaching. The information came from an Airbnb study to find out what industries its American hosts work in. the study found that almost 10 percent of U.S. Airbnb hosts in 2017 identified themselves as teachers or in the field of education. The home-sharing service estimated it has about 45,000 active teacher hosts in America. In addition, the study says there are an estimated 75,000 other hosts living in households with a teacher.

American teacher hosts earned more than $160 million dollars from Airbnb in 2017, the company said. That includes about $54 million earned during the summer alone. The average amount earned by teacher hosts individually was $6,500 in 2017. The study did not provide data from hosts about why they choose to become part of Airbnb. But the company noted that many teachers in America face difficult economic situations. Airbnb says additional earnings from hosting can help.

The U.S. Department of Education reported this year that 94 percent of public school teachers said they had spent their own money on some classroom supplies in the 2015-2016 school year. It also reported that the average pay for public school teachers in 2015-2016 was lower than in the 1990-1991 school year when the inflation rate was considered. Some states had even higher rates of teacher hosts than Airbnb’s estimated national average.

Airbnb spokesman Christopher Nulty told The Atlantic magazine that the home-sharing industry was not a total solution for the current problems facing many teachers. But he said he thought Airbnb could be an “important tool” to help teachers make extra money and give them “the respect and dignity” they had earned.

The report on the number of teacher hosts comes as Airbnb continues to face opposition by activists and officials in some areas. U.S. critics of the company say the service is driving up rental market prices in several cities. Elected officials in some areas have proposed or approved rules to limit the influence of the service. Hotel companies have also protested that the business presents unfair competition.

1.Teachers choose to become part of Airbnb because of _____.

A.their economic difficulty B.respect and dignity

C.the lack of classroom supplies D.the high rental price

2.Airbnb is opposed by some people or organizations except _____.

A.officials B.the Department of Education

3.We can learn from the passage that Airbnb _____.

A.can solve teachers’ economic problems.

    How to Write an Email

While many people are accessible by email, sometimes it is difficult to determine how exactly to write an email to them. 1.

Write an appropriate subject line. The subject line should tell the recipient (接收者) immediately what the email is about. 2. Remember that your wording also has to be brief.

3. It is best to be more formal rather than informal, so when writing to someone you have never met or written to before, a “Dear Jane Smith” is appropriate. When addressing someone whom you are a little familiar with, a “Dr. Smith” is okay until they tell you to address them by their first name, in which case a simple “Jane” will be okay.

State your purpose at the beginning. Within the first two sentences of your email, your recipient should know exactly why you are writing to him. Sometimes an introduction may have to precede (先于) the sentence that states why you are writing and sometimes it has to follow.

Use appropriate language. You may be used to using informal language in certain social settings. 4. Even when dealing with colleagues or friends you are familiar with, do not immediately fall back on informal language.

Keep it simple. People may get dozens and even hundreds of emails a day. 5. In that way, they can save much of their time when reading emails.

A. Use proper greetings.

B. Express your ideas clearly.

C. Here are some tips for you to follow.

D. You should avoid spelling and grammar mistakes.

E. Be as specific as possible when writing the subject.

F. However, an email may not be the best place to use such language.

G. It is always easier for them if you keep your email as short and brief as possible.

“Color, color, color!” are the words of artist Eric Carle. Eric is like the king in the world of children’s books. He has written over 70 children’s books. His most famous book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is common on children’s bookshelves all over the world. What most people don’t know is that Eric also makes art for adults, which is called “ArtArt”. People didn’t know about it, because he didn’t show it to the public until he was 84 years old!

Like Eric’s children’s books, his “ArtArt” is full of bright and clear color. He says he loves colors so much because he missed it during the war in Germany. Eric was born in New York in 1929, but moved to Germany with his family when he was 6. When he was 10, World War II began. He noticed that all the houses and buildings in his town were painted gray, brown or dark green. It was a sad time, and it seemed like there was no color anywhere.

At the end of the war, “when color came back”, Eric explains, “I just loved it so much. I keep saying that I wish our eyes could see more color. Color is a very important part of my work.”

That’s true. Eric paints bright colors on paper, cuts out shapes, and then glues them onto another piece of paper. This method is called collage (拼贴艺术). In fact, it is what led Eric to his “ArtArt”.

Eric’s “ArtArt” includes large collages as well as paintings, photographs and even costumes. In all these works, he uses all kinds of colors-everything from purple to light green to orange. Now that’s a lot of color!

1.When did Eric show “ArtArt” to the public?

A.In 1929. B.In 1939.

C.In 1997. D.In 2013.

2.Why did Eric feel sad during World War II?

A.Because he could hardly see bright color.

B.Because he had to join the army to fight.

C.Because he couldn’t draw very good paintings.

D.Because he lived a very poor life with his parents.

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Collage plays an important part in Eric’s book “ArtArt”.

B.Children know little about The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

C.Eric has created more books for adults than for children.

D.Eric moved to Germany with his family when he was 10.

What if your parents are too busy to cook dinner, so they give you a bag of candy…?

That’s exactly what some parents did in the 1920s in America. Back then, stores sold more kinds of candy than they do now. Most people thought it was as good for them as a healthy dinner. Many scientists also thought candy was good for people’s health.

Now, of course, we know that sugar isn’t good for us. But could it really be that bad if it tastes so delicious? Sadly, yes.

“Everyone loves sugar,” says Dr. Robert Lusting, a sugar expert. “But sugar has a dark side.” Take breakfast, for example. Sugary cereal (谷类植物) gives you energy, but only for a short time. Then you start to feel sleepy. Foods like oatmcal (麦片) and fruit give your body energy for hours. And eating a lot of sugar can cause health problems, including serious illnesses. These days, more and more children are getting illnesses caused by eating too much sugar.

The good news is that changing your diet can help—and fast. Lusting recently did a study that helped overweight children eat less sugar. All of the children who cut out sugar had fewer health problems in just 10 days.

Knowing the risks of eating too much sugar can help you make healthy food choices. Does this mean you have to give up sugar completely? No. It just means you should make sure you are eating plenty of healthy foods, like fresh fruit and vegetables. Most of us can eat candy sometimes, but just make sure it’s not your dinner.

1.In the 1920s in America, candy ___________.

A.came in fewer kinds than today

B.was often eaten after dinner

C.cost a lot more than today

D.was regarded as healthy

2.What does the underlined word “diet” in paragraph 5 mean?

A.Energy. B.Food.

C.Nutrition. D.Vitamin.

3.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Kids Like Candy B.The Truth about Sugar

C.The Importance of Breakfast D.Dangers of Being Overweight

The first thing Eileen Korey noticed when she got into the car that Wednesday afternoon in early May was a small diamond ring in the tray(托盘)between the front seats. It hadn't been there before. Weeks earlier, she had taken the car in to have the airbag replaced. The car belonged to her daughter and son-in-law and she was helping them out. Now she was picking it up. That's when she saw the ring. Korey, 64, of Lake Oswego quickly contacted her daughter and son-in-law to ask if they were missing a diamond ring or if any of their friends had reported losing a ring. They both wrote back, saying they had no idea what she was talking about.

Korey took the ring to the service desk at the garage to ask if any women technicians might have left a ring in the car while they were working on it. The woman behind the counter said only men worked on the cars.

Korey asked if the desk clerk could get information from the guy who had replaced the airbag. Over a two-way radio(对讲机), Helbt said he'd placed the ring in the tray when it dropped to the car's floor after he opened up the steering column to replace the airbag. He was not sure how it got there.

She knew a friend who was a jeweler and stopped by to have her look at the ring to see if it was real. Her friend said the diamond, set in a white gold hand, was worth$1, 200 and Korey could easily sell it for $500. But she wouldn't sell it. After making sure the ring didn’t belong to anyone in her family—or anyone at the auto shop Korey tracked down the first owner of the car using paperwork she found in the glove box. Her detective work led her to a dealership in Beaverton, and the car's first ownersDaniel and Ashleigh Hannah. The Hannahs had purchased the small ring when they got engaged and were saving money to buy a house.

Despite how routine it may seem, there are work etiquette tips that can be used when using the telephone for work-related issues. For example, it is best to answer the phone by the third ring. In addition, smiling before answering the telephone may make one's voice seem more business-like and friendlier. 1.

If the telephone rings at work and it is a personal call, work etiquette tips may be applicable as well. For example, the conversation should not make other co-workers, who can likely overhear the conversation, uncomfortable. 2. In addition, the volume of these conversations should be monitored so other co-workers are not disturbed.

3. For example, the subject line should be descriptive. Using all capital letters should be avoided in the text or the subject line of the email. In addition, exclamation or question marks should be used with caution.

One of the main issues that frustrate people in a workplace, such as an office, is strong odors(气味). These odors may come from food or perfume. 4. As a result, one of the easiest and most constructive tips is to avoid using products such as strong perfume or eating food that has strong odors in the workplace.

Another point of debate in many workplaces is centered around the use of common areas, such as kitchens, conference rooms, or lunch rooms. 5. Not many people want to sit at a table with bits of food on it from the previous person.

A.Remember that these areas should be cleaned after they are used.

Gwheezie, a nurse, wrote about her heart attack symptoms on social media. ''Last Sunday I had a heart attack. I'm alive because I called 911. I never had chest pain. It wasn’t what you read in brochures. ''

Gwheezie pointed out that she recently helped her neighbor clean out the garden and actually thought it was muscle strain(扭伤). The pain ran across her upper back, shoulders and equaly down both arms. ''I'd just written it off because it wasn't really bad, '' Gwheezie said. She even drove six hours to help her mother the day before the actual attack came. However, she almost died because she didn't call it ''chest pain''. ''I was lucky, '' she wrote. ''And I wanted to warn women our heart attacks feel different. ''

''Pain that comes and goes seems like a surprising symptom, but it's actually common for heart disease, '' women's health expert, Jennifer Haythe says. ''Some women will experience chest pain, but it may feel different than the typical 'crushing pain(压迫性疼痛)'men will describe. Other women won’t have chest pain at all, which can be deadly. '' Sanjiv Patel, MD, says. ''Women are far more likely to develop untypical symptoms for a heart attack, including indigestion, shortness of breath, tiredness, and arm, neck and back pain, etc. ''

But there are ways to distinguish if the pain is heart-related. ''If you have pain and it gets worse when you exhaust yourself, that's more likely to be a sign, '' Patel says. ''If you have pain and difficulty breathing when you're sitting and watching TV, you get up and walk around and it goes away, the pain is probably not related to your heart. Moreover, if it comes back the next day for a longer period of time. you'll want to see a doctor. ''

''Any new symptom that doesn't feel quite right calls for an immediate call or visit to your doctor, '' Haythe says. ''Take your body seriously. It's usually telling you something. ''

1.Why did Gwheezie post her heart attack symptoms on social media?

A.To raise some money. B.To record the process.

C.To inform other women. D.To share her lucky story.

A.Pain is a fairly rare symptom for heart disease.

B.Chest pain may be a good thing for heart disease.

C.Women are far more likely to die of heart disease.

4.How can we distinguish heart-related pain?

A.From the breath and sleep.

B.From the position and frequency.

C.From the tiredness and heart beats.

D.From the degree and length.

It is common for adults to use ''baby talk'' when interacting with babies. This way of speaking attempts to imitate the sounds babies make when they first try to talk. But is this form of communication helpful to a child’s development?

Several studies have suggested a clear link between parental language methods and a child's early language development. Studies showed that language learning in babies was improved when parents spoke more than a few simple words and used a wider vocabulary. Earlier research found that the style of speech used by parents to communicate with their baby could have an influence on language development.

One such speaking style is known as ''parentese''. Research has shown that babies react better to this kind of language in the first months of life. Generally, parentese involves adults speaking in a higher voice and at a slower speed. The language is simplified, while sentences are short and often repeated. Studies from the past 30 years have confirmed that babies spoken to in parentese developed larger vocabularies throughout the first three years of life.

A new study on the subject, a project of the University of Washington's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, examined whether parents can be effectively taught methods to improve their parentese skills.

Naj a Ferjan Ramírez. working in the Institute for LearningBrain Sciences, said that the parents involved in the research were first shown the importance of language input for their baby's development. Parents were then given suggestions on how to use different parentese methods, and then rated on how well they used these methods with their child. She added that the new study is important because there are still a 1ot of parents with little knowledge about how to use parentese to help their child. This was one reason the researchers included parents from different cultural and economic groupings.

1.How do parents usually talk with their babies?

A.In paragraph 2. B.In paragraph 3.

C.In paragraph 4. D.In paragraph 5.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Communicating with babies matters more

B.Parentese is a good way to practice language

C.The more parents help, the better babies 1earn

D.Speaking parentese helps with babies' language learning

A few weeks ago, I bought a locally-grown salad from a vending machine(自动售货机). But then I immediately realized that it was packaged in a plastic jar. ''I guess I live with this jar now and forever. '' I thought sadly as I stared down at my new child.

The salad jar was only the latest in a long line of examples of how I am addicted to the responsibility of reusing everything, trying to never throw anything away. Water bottles have been given second lives, and berry containers are transformed into Tupperware. I recently even looked at a plastic straw in my fruit juice: Could I reuse it too…?

Yet trying to squeeze my salad jar under my kitchen counter this weekend, I finally had to admit: Being an environmentalist has turned me into a hoarder(囤积者). While keeping a certain number of jars and vegetable bags will allow me not to buy new containers, at a certain point those 30 berry containers begin to get a bit unnecessary. Who am I kidding? Then one day I came across a blog post that asks accusingly. ''Are you turning your own home into a landfill(垃圾填埋场)? ''

In my defense, there is absolutely no excuse not to be a conscious consumer. The solution is painfully obvious, but hard to admit: Delaying waste is not, in fact, rejecting waste. In an over-packaged, over-consuming culture, this can feel like a burden. While I refuse to throw away packaging, the fact remains: I already have it. The damage is done. I've been ignoring one of the most essential and difficult parts—reduce, reuse, recycle. Even if I go out of my way to reuse the waste I do have, I need to reduce what I am bringing home in the first place.

While I might not be ready to go full zero-waste, it's a goal that is admirable to work toward. Until then, my salad jar child is going to make a great overnight oats jar.

A.How important reusing is.

B.How enthusiastic she is about reusing.

C.How she makes use of the plastic straw.

D.Why she is responsible for reusing plastic straws.

A.She enjoys collecting a variety of small jars.

B.She has saved far more containers than she needs.

C.She likes the idea of saving fine packages in daily life.

D.She stores more berry containers than other containers.

3.What does the underlined word ''this'' in paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Over-packaging. B.Delaying waste.

C.Over-consuming. D.Rejecting waste.

4.The author realizes at last that she should___________.

A.buy fewer over-packaged goods

B.throw away unnecessary packaging

A Chinese boy is reported to have spent about 2 million yuan in studying in New Zealand but failed to get any diploma. He even could not take care of himself and his grandmother had to feed him.

The man in the case is a so-called adult baby, because his deeds make him almost the same as a baby. He cannot take care of himself. He is unable to go to school, let alone finish studies. He even relies on his grandmother to feed him.

However, he burns money faster than any normal student. He spent about 2 million yuan in two years overseas, but could not finish even the preparatory courses. We do not mean to judge his choice, but someone who lacks the basic ability to survive has little chance of success in any modern society.

In a later interview, the mother of the boy was in tears and said she regretted not having taught her son well. She also told the story about how she “educated” her son: meeting all his demands, even the unreasonable ones. When he did not perform well in school, she simply spent money in sending him overseas; she would buy whatever he wanted. That was bad for her and bad for him.
