With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dump, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co- workers, neighbors, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌) to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?

Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. SoI believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

A.talk about his own understanding of humor

B.encourage people to be humorous in daily life

C.introduce a practical way to get through daily life

D.convince people of the power of being optimistic about life

The preventive measures for forest fires include some preemptive(抢先)methods that can help reduce the risks of fires and control their severity and spread, and thus, maintain ecological balance and protect resources. Close monitoring of forest fires caused by natural factors can help prevent their spread to a large extent. To contain forest fires, fire departments usually use water and chemical fire retardants(抑制剂) that can be dropped from planes and helicopters. To control the spread of a wildfire, firefighters usually create a control line by removing all fuel from an area so that the fire cannot travel across it.

Controlled burns are often employed by government authorities to reduce fuel buildup, and clean up the fallen leaves, and thus, prevent the spread of forest fires to a vast area. Regular controlled burns can also help maintain biodiversity(生物多样性), as the smoke and heat produced in the process can facilitate(促进) the growth of seeds of certain plant species. Apart from these, responsible human behavior can help reduce the number of forest fires to a great extent. In fact, we can reduce the number of wildfires dramatically by not leaving behind any source of fire in the forest.

Forest fires can affect climate and weather to a great extent, besides causing severe damage to valuable trees. Wildfires can increase the level of greenhouse gases(water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc), and therefore increase pollution and global warming. However, they are also an important part of the ecosystem, and many plants depend on the heat and smoke generated by wildfires for their growth and reproduction. But large wildfires can cause extensive damage to the ecosystem, which again highlights the importance of effective control and prevention of forest fires.

A.burn the rubbish and keep the forest clean

B.help keep ecological balance of nature

C.reduce fuel building up and limit forest fires spread.

D.provide reasonable conditions for some plants’ growth.

4.A controlled forest fire may play a positive role because ________________.

A.a new forest will appear soon.

B.it promotes the development of some seeds

C.nature keeps its balance only by wildfires.

Traditions of giving middle names vary around the world.

Scotland

Middle names are actually a fairly recent discovery in Scotland. However, as the practice has become popular around the world, it has become pretty common for Scottish babies to have middle names. Because last names in Scotland are generally associated with their family roots, and first names usually describe a physical characteristic, many parents see a middle name as an opportunity to give their baby a slightly more creative name.

Spain and Latin America

In Spain and Latin America, a middle name is a way to break free from the cultural code governing first names. In some countries, even first names are legislated(立法) to be of Christian origin. In Chile, most girls are named Maria, after the Virgin Mary, so the middle name is used in practice for differentiation. Maria is the most common name in the Spanish-speaking world, so in all Spanish-speaking countries the middle name takes on great significance.

Russia

In Russia, both boys and girls are given middle names based on their father's first name. For boys, the middle name usually has ovich, or evich, added to its ending. For girls, the middle patronymic(从父名衍生出的名字) name usually has ovna, or evna, added to its ending. People in Russia are often referred to by both their first and middle names, sort of the way parents in America use their children's full names when they're trying to get their attention(or yell at them). Close friends in Russia often don't use their first names completely, and use only patronymic names, when talking to each other.

Australia

According to Law Buddy, an Australian legal advice service, child naming laws in Australia allow Birth Registrars to refuse to register baby names that to be offensive to register to careless, inappropriate, ridiculous. They do allow for children to get a middle name, which is typically reserved for the mother's maiden name(娘家姓),provided, of course, that the mother's maiden name is not offensive, careless, inappropriate, or ridiculous.

1.What do we know about giving middle names in Scotland?

A.It needs to be based on their family roots.

B.It's opposed by the elderly in the country

C.It mainly describes a baby's appearance.

D.It didn't become common until not long ago

2.What role do middle names in the Spanish-speaking countries play?

A.Showing family roots.

B.Showing their unique culture.

C.Describing a physical characteristic.

D.Allowing people to have different names

3.What is a typical feature of middle names in Russia?

A.They usually have the same ending.

B.They're usually very creative names.

C.They're usually difficult to remember.

D.They're based on their father's middle name.

4.What should parents in Australia consider when naming their children?

A.Avoiding a middle name.

B.Avoiding registering baby names.

C.Using the mother's proper maiden name.

D.Using an unusual name for differentiation.

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. 1.Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?

2.They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.

To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. 3.In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” 4.

Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.

5. An A-team may require a balance——not just A playersbut a few generous B players as well.

A. It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.

B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.

C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers’ attention.

D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.

E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.

F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.

G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.

By the end of the century, if not sooner, the world’s oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.

At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物) called phytoplankton. Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface. Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton. Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean’s appearance.

Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean, an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean’s warming trend. Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.

Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a scientist in MIT’s Center for Global Change Science, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 3, it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic, a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener. “Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing. ” she said, “but the type of phytoplankton is changing.”

And why does that matter? Phytoplankton are the base of the food web. If certain kinds begin to disappear from the ocean, Dutkiewicz said, “it will change the type of fish that will be able to survive.” Those kinds of changes could affect the food chain.

Whatever colour changes the ocean experiences in the coming decades will probably be too gradual and unnoticeable, but they could mean significant changes. “It’ll be a while before we can statistically show that the changes are happening because of climate change,” Dutkiewicz said, “but the change in the colour of the ocean will be one of the early warning signals that we really have changed our planet.”

1.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?

A.The various patterns at the ocean surface.

B.The cause of the changes in ocean colour.

C.The way light reflects off marine organisms.

D.The efforts to fuel the growth of phytoplankton.

2.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Sensitive. B.Beneficial. C.Significant. D.Unnoticeable.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Phytoplankton play a declining role in the marine ecosystem.

B.Dutkiewicz’s model aims to project phytoplankton changes.

C.Phytoplankton have been used to control global climate.

D.Oceans with more phytoplankton may appear greener.

4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To assess the consequences of ocean colour changes.

B.To analyse the composition of the ocean food chain.

C.To explain the effects of climate change on oceans.

D.To introduce a new method to study phytoplankton.

The problem of robocalls has gotten so bad that many people now refuse to pick up calls from numbers they don’t know. By next year, half of the calls we receive will be scams(欺诈). We are finally waking up to the severity of the problem by supporting and developing a group of tools, apps and approaches intended to prevent scammers from getting through. Unfortunately, it’s too little, too late. By the time these “solutions”(解决方案) become widely available, scammers will have moved onto cleverer means. In the near future, it’s not just going to be the number you see on your screen that will be in doubt. Soon you will also question whether the voice you’re hearing is actually real.

That’s because there are a number of powerful voice manipulation(处理) and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use. At this year’s I/O Conference, a company showed a new voice technology able to produce such a convincing human-sounding voice that it was able to speak to a receptionist and book a reservation without detection.

These developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse. The reason that robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than precision. A decade of data breaches(数据侵入) of personal information has led to a situation where scammers can easily learn your mother’s name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they’re able to carry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people. This means, for example, that a scammer could call you from what looks to be a familiar number and talk to you using a voice that sounds exactly like your bank teller’s, tricking you into “confirming” your address, mother’s name, and card number. Scammers follow money, so companies will be the worst hit. A lot of business is still done over the phone, and much of it is based on trust and existing relationships. Voice manipulation technologies may weaken that gradually.

We need to deal with the insecure nature of our telecom networks. Phone carriers and consumers need to work together to find ways of determining and communicating what is real. That might mean either developing a uniform way to mark videos and images, showing when and who they were made by, or abandoning phone calls altogether and moving towards data-based communications—using apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, which can be tied to your identity.

Credibility is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going to get harder from here on out.

1.How does the author feel about the solutions to problem of robocalls?

A.Panicked. B.Confused. C.Embarrassed. D.Disappointed.

2.Taking advantage of the new technologies, scammer can ________.

A.aim at victims precisely B.damage databases easily

C.start campaigns rapidly D.spread information widely

3.What does the passage imply?

A.Honesty is the best policy.

B.Technologies can be double-edged.

C.There are more solutions than problems.

D.Credibility holds the key to development.

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Where the Problem of Robocalls Is Rooted

B.Who Is to Blame for the Problem of Robocalls

C.Why Robocalls Are About to Get More Dangerous

D.How Robocalls Are Affecting the World of Technology

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.

It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.

With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.

Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product—CanCandy.

As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.

Meanwhile, with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy’s profits to Big Smiles.     What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some surprising answers.

US magazine The Atlantic recently asked 30,000 people this question. Among them, 52 percent said tennis balls are green, 42 percent said they are yellow, and 6 percent went with other colors. According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls are yellow. 1.

Scientists call this color constancy (色彩恒常性). For example, we know that China's flag is red. When we see it during sunset or under purple light, we still know that it is red, even if it looks like a different color. 2. Even if the object is seen in different kinds of light later, our brain can still tell its true color.

3. It appears to be a combination of yellow, a ''warm'' color and green, a ''cool'' color.

According to The Atlantic, when our brains try to figure out what color the ball is, some people ignore ''cool'' colors, such as green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as being yellow.4. They see the ball as being green.

5. In 2015, a girl posted a picture of a dress online. Some people believed the dress was black and blue—but others thought it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored ''cold'' or ''warm'' colors.

A.It is not just tennis balls that have such a confusing color.

B.But others ignore ''warm'' colors, such as red, yellow and orange.

C.However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure as the flag.

D.It is difficult for some people to distinguish yellow from green.

E.So why did so many people say that they're green?

F.Certain parts of our brain are in charge of recognizing colors.

G.When we first see an object in natural light, our brains recognize its true color.

Fireworks have been enjoyed by countless people ever since they were invented in China during the Tang Dynasty hundreds of years ago. From small family gatherings (团聚) to huge global celebrations, there isn’t a party that couldn’t be made more fun with a few fireworks. But it seems that there’s a big price to pay for some brief beauty and fun.

It’s been discovered that fireworks contain metals such as copper () and lead, in addition to other pollutants like perchlorates (高氯酸盐). According to the Environmental Protection Agency, perchlorates can form naturally or be made. They are an industrial chemical used in rocket fuel and explosives (炸药), and are soluble (可溶解的) in water.

This is a reason for concern because perchlorates negatively affect the thyroid gland (甲状腺), which influences important bodily functions like blood pressure and heart rate.

Furthermore, a study conducted by Terry Gordon, a professor at New York University, examined the emissions(排放物) whose sizes were big enough to enter the lungs. They concluded that these emissions may lead to various dangerous conditions like cancer, heart attacks, and strokes (中风).

It is worth noticing, however, that no studies have proven the connctions between these conditions and the dangerous chemicals in fireworks.

However, the negative effects of firework emissions can be observed in birds. Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds warns against setting off fireworks close to wildlife areas as they may cause confusion among birds.

In 2010, an incident involving 5,000 red-winged blackbirds falling out of the sky on New Year’s Eve in Arkansas, US supported this idea. A fireworks display held at a nesting ground for blackbirds led to the birds’ night sight being affected, causing them to fall to their deaths.

Arguably (可以说), the use of fireworks during celebrations may be because people don’t realize how they pollute our environment. Companies and researchers could take this cue (线索) and find other new, eco-friendly ways.

After all, for all the beauty fireworks bring, there’s no better beauty than that of our planet’s.

1.According to the article, perchlorates contained in fireworks ______.

A.do harm to the thyroid gland

B.raise the risk of cancer

C.are dangerous when put in water

D.are made from copper and lead

2.Terry Gordon concluded from his research that ______.

A.fireworks are directly connected with lung cancer

B.the waste from fireworks could threaten our body

C.chemicals in fireworks could increase our blood pressure

D.our body is strong enough to fight against the pollutants in fireworks

3.What is the author’s attitude toward the use of fireworks?

A.Positive. B.Negative.

C.Indifferent. D.Neutral.

It’s often said that the rise of social media has revolutionized (彻底改变) communication. With smartphones and social networking apps, we can write to our family and friends whenever we like. But while social media has brought us convenience, it also has its problems, such as misunderstandings in communication.

Quite often, people misunderstand what’s written on social media. According to a story published on The Conversation on March 8, sarcasm (讽刺), in particular, can be very difficult to notice in a written message.

Sarcasm is a kind of irony (反语): It’s when we say something, but really mean the opposite. For example, a message from a friend the day before a math exam that says “I’m so looking forward to tomorrow!” is obviously sarcasm.

Sarcasm before the rise of social media and mobile phones was mostly used in speech and face to face. That made sarcasm easier, because you could accompany your words with a facial gesture and a tone (语气) of voice that would help others get your message. You had a good chance of being understood and receiving a laugh or an understanding glance.

And yet when we text or write something online, a lot of that information goes missing. “There are no facial hints, no tones or maybe even a delayed response if a person can’t text you back immediately,” wrote The Conversation. “And if you don’t know the person all that well, there goes your last possible hint: history.”

To help avoid misunderstandings, people who use platforms such as Twitter often include the hashtag sarcasm – although this is like having to explain a joke when people don’t laugh at it, which destroys the point of sarcasm in the first place.

And it isn’t only sarcasm that can get lost in electronic communications. It’s also hard to notice things such as indifference (冷漠).

“One of the problems with digital communication, when it relies purely on text, is that this sucks (抽离) the empathy (情感共鸣) out of the communication. So it can lead to miscommunication,” linguist Vyv Evans, author of The Emoji Code, told USA Today. “This is where emojis come into their own. They put the body language back, so people can better read emotional intent (目的).”

However, even though there are hundreds of different emojis(表情符号) to choose from, there’s still no replacement for good old-fashioned face-to-face communication.

1.What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph mean according to the context?

A.They can’t wait to take the exam.

B.They are well-prepared for the exam.

C.They’re not looking forward to taking the exam at all.

D.The exam might be too difficult for them.

2.What might lead to the words we write online being misunderstood, according to the Conversation?

A.The use of new internet words and phrases.

B.The complicated relationship between people.

C.The absence of facial expressions and tones.

D.Responding to other people too quickly.

3.What does Vyv Evans think is a possible way to avoid miscommunication online?

A.Using emojis, as they can display body language.

B.Expressing fewer personal feelings.

C.Sending voice messages instead of text messages.

D.Using a hashtag before making jokes.

4.What is the article mainly about?

A.The convenience of online communication.

B.Some misunderstandings that come with digital communication.

C.A good replacement for face-to-face communication.

D.Some reasons for the popularity of emojis.

Slang(俚语) is very informal language which is often used by young people. It’s hard to keep up to date with it as new words and phrases appear and evolve (发展). Living in a multicultural society has an effect on language, especially on the young, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also have a big impact. A complete list of slang is difficult to make; by the time it was finished, the list would be out of date. However, here are a few examples:

Safe, sorted, sound, cool or wicked all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.

Instead of using different tag questions (附加疑问句) like “… isn’t it?”, “… can’t you?” or “… don’t they?”, people use “innit”.

For example, “He can dance really well, innit!” (= He can dance really well, can’t he?) or “They always say that, innit.” (= They always say that, don’t they?)

Instead of saying “very”, “really” or “completely” use “well”, for example, “I’m well tired” or “You got it well wrong!”

“Whatever” means “I don’t care”, for example, A: “But the teacher says we can’t leave until we’ve finished.” B: “Whatever. I’m going.”

“He’s fine” or “he’s fit” both mean “He’s good-looking”. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.

Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in the north of England recently told its pupils to stop using slang words such as “hiya” (hello), “cheers” and “ta” (both mean “thank you”) if they wanted to get a place at university or a good job.

When British people use language like this, it’s no surprise that some say they can’t understand native speakers. But perhaps learners don’t need to worry so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken around the world today is between non-native speakers of the language.

So, how important is it to understand these slang words and expressions? If you watch films or TV in English, read magazines in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics, then understanding slang can be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English examination, though.

1.Why is it hard to make a complete list of slang, according to the article?

A.Because many slang words are outdated.

B.Because it is mostly used by young people.

C.Because modern slang changes very quickly.

D.Because it comes from different cultural backgrounds.

2.What can we learn about slang from the text?

A.It prevents language from evolving.

B.It is also spread through TV and music.

C.It is more popular in the UK than in the US.

D.It has found its way into formal written English.

3.What can we conclude from the text?

A.Knowing little slang doesn’t greatly affect how one communicates.

B.Many UK schools are encouraging students to use slang.

C.It is essential for English learners to study some British slang.

D.More English is spoken by native speakers than by non-native speakers.

On the first day of my part-time job, I woke up early than usual, excited but nervous. I said to me, with a mixture of these feelings, that it would be a easy job. However, things didn’t happen as I had expected. I entered the shop that I would spend the next couple of weeks serve coffee and food. After training, my first customer finally appeared. He ordered for a cup of coffee and two dish. Ignoring the shop’s rule, I carried the food without a tray. I was about to reach the table when one of the plates fall noisily to the floor. I stood there embarrassed. From now on, I always obeyed the rule and could never more careful.

Procrastination (拖延症) is a common phenomenon in daily life. However, it has terrible effects. It can affect the quality of your work, or lead you to miss deadlines. 1.

The good news is that there are lots of things you can do to overcome this bad habit. First, it’s important to recognize when you’re procrastinating. Most people know when they’re putting things off, but there are several signs you can watch out for. 2.Perhaps you sit down to work on a high-priority project, and then immediately take a coffee break. Everyone’s different, so pay attention to when you put off a task or project.

3.Are you overwhelmed (压垮) by the task? Are you disorganized and just don’t want to get started? Or, are you a perfectionist and don’t think you have enough knowledge or skills to begin?

Once you understand why you’re procrastinating, come up with some strategies to overcome it. If you’re not motivated to get started, think about all of the unpleasant consequences of not completing this task. If you’re procrastinating because of disorganization, you can make a to-do list. 4.Or if you’re procrastinating because of perfectionism, ask yourself how perfect the work actually has to be.

And don’t forget to reward yourself. For example, have a cup of coffee once you’ve completed a task that you’ve been putting off. 5. Remember, it can take a while to overcome a bad habit and establish a new routine, so don’t give up.

A.Besides, it also has many benefits.

B.Even worse, it can damage your reputation.

C.Second, it’s wise to do the overwhelming tasks.

D.This will help you know which tasks you should do first.

E.The next step is to think about why you’re procrastinating.

F.You’ll realize how good it feels when you actually finish things.

G.For instance, you might spend much time working on low-priority tasks.

Soaps are television serial (连续的) dramas of a highly dramatic and sentimental (情感的) nature. They are called soaps because many of them were originally funded by soap companies. They were appealing to an audience primarily made up of house wives. Soaps tell us a lot about the viewers they are produced for. These long-running serials, with potentially endless episodes (), are concerned with everyday life. They are generally aimed at the lower classes in a country.

In the US, the most popular soaps usually feature the lives of the rich, the charming and the beautiful. Their houses are always beautiful, big and well decorated. The characters lead exciting lives. Most of these characters are very ambitious. One of the most popular soaps is The bold and the Beautiful. The name says it all really! It is set in Los Angeles and centred on the attractive and wealthy Forrester family and their impossibly gorgeous fashion house business. It is probably the most watched soap in the world.

The British prefer to see ordinary characters rather than the gorgeous high-flyers of the US soaps. They prefer to view on TV what they have experienced personally and what they actually see around them. They believe that one should accept one’s station in life and not attempt to be more than one actually is.

Coronation Street, first shown in 1960, is the longest-running British TV soap opera. It is watched by about one-third of the British population, more often by women, by older people, and especially by people from lower socio-economic groups. EastEnders is another popular British show, though it appeals to a younger generation. Again the characters tend to be working class. In addition to women, young people and men are also given strong roles in order to reach a wider audience.

Thus the soaps can teach us a lot about the audience that they are intended for. The characters, settings and even the story lines can show us what appeals to British and American people.

1.What’s the relationship between soaps and soap companies according to Paragraph 1?

A.Soap companies are named after soaps.

B.Soap companies support soaps financially.

C.Soap companies depend on soaps for promoting their products.

D.Soap companies make soaps appealing to the public.

2.How does the author introduce US soaps in Paragraph 2?

A.By using examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By analyzing causes. D.By describing processes.

3.Which is the difference between British soaps and American soaps?

A.The audience they are intended for. B.Their popularity and influence.

C.The characters’ class and the settings. D.Their tradition and history.

4.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To show his love for soaps.

B.To remember some of the classic soaps.

C.To introduce American and British soaps.

D.To encourage audience to watch more soaps.

The rapid growth in skyscrapers worldwide, most of which have large windows, has led to a high demand for window washers. Though the job is well-paid, it is dangerous and accidents are not uncommon. However, if Israel-based start-up Skyline Technologies has its way, the dangerous job may soon be done by Ozmo, an intelligent window cleaning robot, with humans supervising (监督) from the safety of the ground.

Much like humans, Ozmo, sitting on platforms hanging from the buildings, uses its arms and brushes to clean the dirt on the glass. A 3D map of the building’s surface programmed into its system allows the robot to skillfully deal with any obstacle it is likely to meet, as it moves up and down the buildings. The robot will self-correct and move around every obstacle that it might have met so as not to break a window.

Unlike present window washers, the robot cleaner does not require soap to clean the glass. Instead, it uses distilled (蒸馏的) water to do the job. Yaron Schwarcz, CEO of Skyline Robotics explains, “We are environmentally friendly.”

Ozmo is also expected to be much more efficient than its human counterparts. While it presently takes three cleaners 480 hours each to clean windows of a 40-storey glass building, the robot will be able to do it in 80 hours. However, unlike other robots, Ozmo will not replace human workers, and only make their jobs safer by making them supervisors, who will be controlling the operation from the safety of the ground.

Whether Ozmo, which is still being tested, does as good a job as humans remains to be seen. If things go well, its creators have much bigger ambitions for Ozmo. Schwarcz told Forbes Magazine, “Window cleaning is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan to replace all tasks that are dangerous and dirty.”

1.Why is Ozmo friendly to our environment?

A.It uses less soap than other robots.

B.It depends on solar energy.

C.It makes our ecosystem more balanced.

D.It consumes nothing made from chemicals.

2.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Like cleaning windows, a well-paid job is usually dangerous.

B.Without humans supervising, Ozmo could have performed better.

C.Ozmo can save 400 hours per building compared to a human cleaner.

D.Ozmo can’t be stopped by obstacles with its advanced system.

3.What does the underlined part “the tip of the iceberg” mean?

A.A small part of a big plan.

B.As cool as the iceberg.

C.The most advanced technology.

D.The leading role in the modern world.

4.What is the best title for the text

A.Robots make a difference.

B.Meet Ozmo, the window cleaning robot.

C.Supervise Ozmo, human safe.

D.Intelligent Ozmo becomes known worldwide.

Chokwe Selassie, an eighth-grader at Blackburn Middle School, was inspired to create an app on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole (坑洞) in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. “I wanted to do something about the pothole problem in my city,” Chokwe, 13, told TFK.

Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. “When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red,” Chokwe says. “And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you with a beep sound.” Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they come across, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.

The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson, according to Chokwe. “It works by using the city’s 311 call system, so it uses information already stored in a database,” he says. Through the call system, citizens dial 311 to report non-emergency problems — which include potholes.

To get some help in developing the app, the boys took part in a Minority Male Makers Program sponsored by Verizon (an American broadband and telecommunications company) and held at Jackson State University. The program provides nearly 1,000 American middle school boys across the country with training in advanced technology.

“The students were really excited to participate and learn new things,” says Valerie Bradley, Chokwe’s principal at Blackburn Middle School. Through the program, Chokwe says, he and his friends received encouragement and guidance.

Although the app isn’t yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The prototype (雏形) remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. And then he wants to go even farther. “I want to keep working on the app until it’s nationwide,” Chokwe says.

1.What is the app designed by Chokwe aimed at?

A.Perfecting the city’s 311 call system.

B.Planning the best routes for drivers.

C.Measuring the streets in Jackson.

D.Helping drivers avoid potholes.

2.What does the second paragraph mainly explain?

A.How Chokwe’s app works.

B.What Chokwe’s app relies on.

C.Where Chokwe’s app can be used.

D.Whom Chokwe’s app is designed for.

3.Whom is Verizon’s Minority Male Makers Program popular with?

A.Students at Jackson State University.

B.Teachers at Blackburn Middle School.

C.Boys who are interested in technology.

D.Males like driving and repairing vehicles.

4.Which of the following words can best describe Chokwe?

A.Proud. B.Honest.

C.Ambitious. D.Independent.

Dear Ashley,

You ask me how to protect your eyesight at your last letter. I am writing to give you some suggestion. Firstly, you shouldn’t keep your eyes work for a long time. After you have studied for an hour or so, you’d better to have a rest and look out of window. Secondly, while reading a book, you should keep your eyes about a foot away from them. Thirdly, keep it in mind what you shouldn’t read in poor light, in strongly sunlight, on a moving bus or in bed. Lastly, doing eye exercises every day help you protect your eyesight.

I hope my advice will be of help to you.

Yours,
