Healthy eating habits have positive effects on everyone. However, students can especially benefit from meeting the particular nutritional demands of the school day. To be good academically, children must be physically able to attend class and focus on the tasks at hand. Math, language study, reading and creative thinking also require physical support from food energy and nutrients. 1.

Attendance:2.Getting enough nutrition keeps you from taking sick days and missing out on daily lessons. Eating a healthy breakfast makes you more likely to achieve your daily nutritional goals. This keeps your body strong and less likely to fall ill.

Focus: School is a social network that requires cooperation from students, teachers and staff. 3.Hunger makes you hard to focus and easy to get angry. In contrast, eating a healthy breakfast keeps you focused and cheerful. A 2019 study proved these findings.

Thinking: Food energy and nutrients serve neurological(神经的) as well as physical body functions. The same 2019 report concluded that eating breakfast regularly affects the brain's blood sugar requirements and nutritional support. 4.Let alone, these skills are vital to learning and achieving high grades.

Test scores: Balanced nutrition plays a part in testing well. 5.Healthy eating also contributes to better performance on vocabulary tests. You can improve your test scores by eating right every day.

What’s in the scream? It is thought that the sound of a scream has an acoustic(听觉的) signature - an acoustic DNA that tells the listener’s ear that they are hearing a scream, even if it is not. “The scream may initially run to scare the attacking predator(捕食者). The study of screaming has the potential to help us understand the evolution of emotional communication,” says Jay Schwartz of Emory university.

Jay Schwartz and his colleagues asked 181 volunteers to listen to 75 sounds that included laughter, crying, moans, groans, and yells from acted origins, like television or movies, and more natural sources, such as a YouTube video of a child opening a present and screaming in delight. The listeners indicated whether or not each sound was something they considered a scream. “We did not provide any type of definition for a scream because we were trying to get at what is it in people’s minds that distinguishes a scream,” says Schwartz, who presented his work at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of America on 14 May.

When they analyzed the sound files, they found that the ones listed as screams had acoustic similarities. People were more likely to consider a sound a scream if it was higher in pitch(音高), and had a varied change in pitch, first moving up and then down at the end.

Rapid changes in amplitude - perceived as a rough, gravelly quality - also tended to be classified as screams more than sounds with a smoother tone. This sound was classified as a scream by 64 percent of the listeners. Surprisingly, a recording of a whistle was categorized as a scream by 70 percent of the participants. “It was because the whistle exhibited a lot of the acoustic qualities that we found to be associated with a scream, including high pitch and roughness,” says Schwartz.

1.What was the scream used for in the beginning?

A.Frightening the enemies. B.Sharing the different acoustic DNA.

C.Attracting the volunteers D.Understanding the emotional evolution.

2.What does Jay Schwartz’s research aim to understand?

A.Where people would scream. B.How people judged the scream.

C.Why people would scream. D.What was the best scream.

3.What did the screams have in common?

A.Higher pitch. B.A peaceful mind.

C.Natural origins. D.Different functions.

4.Why was the whistle considered a scream by most listeners?

A.It had the smoother tone. B.It showed some roughness.

C.It made listeners satisfied. D.It did great harm to people.

The Swedish Academy has named Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature. It also announced that it was honoring Austrian Peter Handke with the 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature. The Academy cancelled the prize last year after many members fled the organization following sexual abuse accusations linked to it.

The Academy said it awarded Tokarczuk for imaginative writing that “represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.”

The Polish writer’s first published work came in 1989, a book of poetry called Cities in Mirrors. Her first novel, The Journey of the Book-People, was published in 1993. Last year, Tokarczuk became the first Polish writer to win Britain’s Man Booker Prize for International Literature for her novel Flights. Her novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, was on the short list of nominees for the 2019 prize as well. That prize went to another writer. Tokarczuk spoke Thursday with readers hours after she won the Nobel. “I can only write.” She said.

The Swedish Academy said it named Peter Handke winner of the 2018 prize for “influential work that with linguistic gift has explored the boundary and the specificity of human experience.” Handke’s first novel was published in 1966. He also writes plays and is a political organizer. The Austrian writer was an opponent(反对者) of NATO’s air attacks against Serbia in the Kosovo war of thelate1990s.He was a supporter of the Serbian government under the leadership of Slobodan Milosevic. He has denied that Bosnian Serb troops carried out a campaign killing of 8, 000 locals in Srebrenica during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. As a result, some critics are angry that he was given the Nobel Prize.

At home in Paris Thursday, Handke called the decision to give him the literature award “courageous.” He said the recognition gave him “a strange kind of freedom.”

It’s reported that the American College Board has made several changes to the SAT test to help more poor students receive higher education. It offers a scoring criterion beyond its own SAT test, which measures only oral and math skills. The new tool is designed to help admissions officers find if applicants have risen above limitations in their social or economic circumstances by expressing a particular characteristic: resourcefulness(足智多谋).

The new criterion, called ECD, has been tried by 50 colleges over the past year and will be carried out by 150 institutions this fall. Relying on public data , it looks at 15 factors(因素) in neighborhoods and schools that might passively influence a candidate’s college readiness. These statistics include crime rates, education levels, joblessness, and the family members that receive food stamps. It applicants come from a highly disadvantaged background yet have proper but perhaps not high SAT scores , a college might then admit them.

Resourcefulness shows an ability to seek support outside one’s self. It requires a clear purpose in learning. The new tool “shines a light on students who have shown remarkable resourcefulness to overcome challenges and achieve more with less,” says David Coleman, the College Board’s president.

The ECD also has the advantage of not taking race into consideration in admissions, a practice being increasingly closed off by the Supreme Court and many states. At the same time, in stressing a key quality for academic success, it may help prevent discrimination in admissions.

The tool is not an absolute measure of resourcefulness. It misses other types of circumstances, such as personal or family problems. Colleges must weigh many factors in admissions. Still, it could lead to a greater focus on character in education beyond the traditional pursuit (追求) of knowledge and career skills. Graduates who have stood out despite their hardships are highly desired by today’s employers.

1.Which people can benefit from the new criterion?

A.Students from poor families. B.Students doing well at maths.

C.Students having much money. D.Students with good spoken skills.

2.What are the new criteria when judging a candidate?

A.The attitudes to schools. B.The remarks from colleges.

C.The difficulties a candidate will face. D.The institutions a candidate will study in.

3.What is the advantage of ECD?

A.It can make applicants successful. B.It can improve the ability of races.

C.It can provide clear learning purposes. D.It can treat applicants equally.

4.Which graduates do employers prefer?

A.Those with excellent qualities.

B.Those having experienced hardships.

C.Those making progress in difficult situations.

D.Those with the traditional pursuit of knowledge.

“Hey, don’t read in the hallway. Your eyesight will be damaged.” You must have heard such warnings many times. Don’t read in dim (暗的)light! This is one of the “pearls of wisdom” that are supposed to help us live a healthy life. Such common beliefs, however, lack scientific basis, according to a paper published recently in the British Medical Journal.

Do you believe in the following everyday wisdom?

Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight.

In dim light, you might blink (眨眼) more, feel discomfort from drying and have trouble focusing. But the majority of eye experts believe it is unlikely to do any permanent damage.

We must drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

In 1945, the Nutrition Council in US suggested that people need to consume 2.5 litres of water a day. But the water contained in food, particularly fruit and vegetables, as well as in milk, juice and soft drinks, also counts towards the total.

We only use 10 percent of our brains.

This myth arose as early as 1907. People have long argued about our power of self-improvement and our brains’ potential abilities. But detailed imaging shows that no area of the brain is silent or inactive.

Shaving your legs causes hair to grow black faster and thicker.

This theory is also illusion. Shaving has no effect on the thickness or rate of hair growth, studies say. Just over time, the edge of hair gets worn away and thus the edge of long hair becomes finer (更细). So hair that is newly grown gives the impression of darkness.

1.What does the paper say about some common beliefs?

A.They are pearls of wisdom

B.They help us live in healthy ways

C.They are well-known theories.

D.They do not have scientific basis.

Environmental experts warn that our planet is drowning in plastic.

The world’s cities produce 2 billion tons of trash every year. By the year 2050 that number is expected to rise to 3 billion tons. The World Bank estimates that the largest amount of trash today, about 44 percent, is plastic. But we often have to buy packaged goods. And often that packaging is made of plastic.

Now, that may be changing. A new environmentally-friendly shopping model was recently launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This shopping model, called Loop, aims to replace throwaway containers with reusable ones.

Loop is the idea of Terra Cycle, an American-based recycling company. Its chief, Tom Szaky. told the Associated Press (AP) that “removing plastics from the ocean is not enough.” He said the point is to get away from single-use packages. Szaky said that Loop is the future of shopping. But it comes from an idea of the past.

He compared it to the “milkman model” of the 1950s in the United States. Back then, someone brought milk to your doorstep in glass bottles and then left with empty bottles. These could be cleaned and used again. The result is zero-waste.

Jennifer Morgan from the environmental non-profit organization Greenpeace also joined in the discussion about Loop at Davos. She said that “Greenpeace welcomes the aim of the Loop Alliance to move away from throwaway culture and disposability.” But Morgan questioned whether companies worldwide are ready to change their business models.

Loop is set to launch later this year in three eastern U.S. states, and also in Paris, France and some of the surrounding area. Then Loop plans to expand to the U.S. West Coast, Toronto, Canada and Britain by the end of this year or 2020.

1.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?

A.Provide background information. B.Advocate zero-waste lifestyle.

C.Explain the reason for trash. D.Introduce a new topic.

2.Where does the idea “Loop” come from?

A.The World Economic Forum. B.Demand of some companies.

C.Zero-waste model. D.The milkman model.

3.Which countries is Loop expected to expand to by 2020?

A.United States and Switzerland. B.Switzerland and Britain.

C.Canada and Britain. D.France and Canada.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.A new shopping model. B.The development of future city.

C.The world’s environmental issue. D.The concerns of future shopping.

A day in the life of 18-year-old David Lanster is full of teenage activities: school, baseball practice, homework. And then he starts cooking. “Some nights I’m up until 1 a.m. making pies, or even later if we’re cooking beef,” said the student at Ransom Everglades High School in Florida, US.

For the past year, Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster’s parents’ home. Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by them. Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them, until the pair decided to do something nice for charity. “We got some really great Miami Heat tickets, a nice watch, and many kitchen machines,” Lanster said. “But we wanted to make this something positive for people rather than us.”

Lanster and Moran focused on Common Threads, a charity(慈善机构) that helps to teach kids in poor neighborhood to cook and make healthy eating choices. The young cooks ask their guests to give however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster’s parents cover their food costs. After their last 12-person event, Lanster and Moran gave $1,600 to the charity. Now, they’re taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road. Lanster and Moran have started to organize private dinner parties in a similar way: the host pays for the ingredients(食材), and the guests make a donation (捐赠) to a charity.

Outside the kitchen, the two are busy preparing their college applications. Neither is sure what they will do in the future, but they’ve promised their parents that they’ll leave cooking alone until they finish high school.

1.Why does Lanster and Moran cook now?

A.To get gifts from guests. B.To raise money for charity.

C.To become cooks. D.To make healthier eating choices.

2.What can we infer about Lanster and Moran?

A.They will give up cooking forever.

C.Their parents support cooking as a job.

D.They will stop cooking for college application.

3.How can we best describe Lanster and Moran?

A.Selfish and reliable. B.Creative and helpful.

C.Confident and careful. D.Outgoing and patient.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

“Sorry seems to be the hardest word” - that is one of Elton John’s most popular songs.

But not every public figure seems to find it so tough to say that powerful five- letter word.

In recent days public figures, from politicians to stars, have all publicly expressed remorse. But with so much remorse, how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression of remorse?

Specifically, saying sorry should be a realization that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to make amends ( ). “People want the response to be personal to them. They want to feel that they’re being listened to and taken seriously,” says Martin Stone.

Firstly, it is important to show that you understand. It is vital that any group or person making an apology understand the focus - is it sorry for the way it’s acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?

Watch out for the speed of response. The quicker the apology comes, the better it indicates that the person making it has felt an immediate sense of guilt.

If sincere, the person making the apology will be looking for clues (线索) to see if he or she is being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. Performed apologies always have a sense of being “acted out”, and are often accompanied by too many unnatural gestures.

For a sincere apology, it is also important to avoid promises that can’t be kept. Don’t say that you’ll make sure that this will not happen again if you’re not confident that it won’t. It could come back to bite you. And do remember that the use of “but” can hugely change the tone ( ) of an apology. As Stone points out, “I’m sorry but …” sounds like you are making excuses and aren’t actually taking any form of responsibility.

1.What is the purpose of the text?

A.To teach us how to tell if an apology is sincere.

B.To discuss how to give a formal apology.

C.To show why we should apologize in life.

D.To explain what a good apology is.

2.What does the underlined word “remorse” probably mean?

A.Pain B.Regret C.Worry D.Doubt

3.Which of the following indicates it’s a “performed” apology?

A.Promising it won’t happen again.

B.Paying attention to the listener’s reaction.

C.Showing you understand his/her feelings.

D.Avoiding eye contact with the listener.

4.What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?

A.The attitude B.The tone of voice

C.The choice of language D.The body language

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at  its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语)as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends  when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle  each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(对抗)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If our energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (鼓起干劲)and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

1.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably _____.

A.he is a lazy person

B.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

C.he is not sure when his energy is low

D.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

A.A change in a family member’s energy cycle.

B.Familiar monologues.

C.Not understanding energy cycles.

D.Trying to control the energy cycle of other family members.

3.You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will _____.

A.keep your energy cycle under control all day

B.help you to control your temper early in the day

C.enable you to concentrate on your routine work

D.help to keep your energy for the day’s work

People travel for a lot of reasons. Some tourists go to see battlefields or religious shrines ( 宗教圣殿). Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. But most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it. Residents (居民) of cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason the Mediterranean has always attracted them. Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean resorts and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!

The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italy’s 30,000 hotels are booked solid ( 全部客满) every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks, and roadsides. Spain’s long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit yearly, or one tourist for every person living in Spain.

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The  Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism, it’s getting worse. The French can’t figure out what to do with all the garbage left by campers around St. Tropez. And in many places, swimming is dangerous because of pollution.

None of this, however, is spoiling anyone’s fun. The Mediterranean gets more popular every year with tourists. Obviously, they don’t go there for clean water and solitude (清净自在). They tolerate traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don’t even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it’s still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.

D.they would like to take pictures in front of famous sites

2.In paragraph 2, cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam are mentioned  _____.

A.to tell us how wealthy their residents are

B.to show that they are not good cities in terms of geography and climate

C.to suggest that these cities lack places of historic interest and scenic beauty

D.to prove that they have got more tourism than they can handle

3.The latter half of the last sentence in Paragraph 3, “or one tourist for every person living in Spain” means  _____.

A.all the 37 million people living in Spain are tourists

B.every Spanish is visited by a tourist every year

C.every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist

D.every year almost as many tourists visit Spain as there are people living in that country

4.According to the passage, which of the following factors might spoil the tourists’ fun at Mediterranean resorts and beaches?

A.Rainy weather B.Polluted water C.Traffic jams D.Crowded buses

It’s 2035. You have a job, a family and you're about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life.

Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror.

“Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics( 智能电子元件)are rear-ranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror you find it hard to believe you’re 40. You look much younger.

With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged!
