When I was a kid, I loved reading history, science fiction, detective stories, but especially comics. I had piles of them and kept talking my Dad into making more shelves for me. One day, I read about a 13-year-old boy who had actually written one of my favorite comics, Legion of Super-Heroes, and I said, “I can do that too.” That year, I was two years younger than the writer.

Three years later, a friend and I started our own fan magazine about comics. It became the first place that regularly told people when their favorite comics were coming out and writers and artists were working on them. Because of the magazine, I won the awards for The Comic Reader, but more important, it got many of the people in the field to know who I was.

One day when I was visiting DC Comics for news for my next issue, one of the editors a chance to write text for his comic. Suddenly, at 16, I was getting paid to write.

I was able to pay for my college classes working as an assistant editor at DC Comics and learned how to write comics stories while I was there. I wrote hundreds of stories. Over the years, I worked as an editor and an executive (主管) for the company, eventually serving as a president and publisher, until earlier this year. Now I’m back to my first love, writing comics again.

Every morning, I open my e-mail and find pages of art sent in by artists across the country who draw my stories. When I’m tired of working on the stories, I can go online and find my readers commenting on my stories or telling me when I make mistakes.

Keep reading and writing, it’s a wonderful way to live.

Each time Chinese New Year is approaching, preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.

London

Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Bangkok

Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.

Mauritius

Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called, as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated reading aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary. Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the comer, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to Lee, but she didn't want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised that it fitted her so well. She walked to the mirror and started practising her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her hand. Before Miss Walker could say something, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily. “It went missing at school yesterday. ”

For those who are too young to know what a Tamagotchi is, it’s an egg-Shaped plastic device with a black-and-white screen on which appears a little pixelated (像素化的) pet. With the three buttons below the screen, you can feed the pet, care for it and clean up its mess. And just like a real pet, it gets sick and dies if neglected.

When it was first released by Japanese company Bandai in 1997, this virtual (虚拟的) “pocket pet” was so popular with school children that it was frequently sold out at stores all over the world. For many people, the Tamagotchi was their first ever experience of raising and caring for a “pet”.

A lot has certainly changed in the last 20 years — especially when it comes to technology — so would it be a good idea to reintroduce the Tamagotchi to today’s world?

Bandai obviously thinks so since it’s going to re-release it next month, marking the device’s 20th anniversary. “We are going after that nostalgia,” said TaraBadie, director of Tamagotchi’s brand management, according to The Verge.

Modern features:

Nostalgia is all the rage these days. Just look at Nintendo’s Pokemon Go — the 2016 smartphone game originated from its 1996 version — and Nokia’s 2017 version of the 3310 — the mobile phone released in 2000 that it seems nearly everyone in the world owned. But these companies didn’t just simply copy from the past — they managed to update the old version and adapt it for the modern world.

With Pokemon Go, Nintendo successfully combined cutting-edge (前沿的) argumented reality (增强现实) technology with the game’s original storyline.

“Pokemon Go tells us about the future of software and the nature of reality-and how they integrate (整合) into what we think of as entertainment,” technology writer Om Malik wrote on The New Yorker.

And although Nokia’s new 3310 stayed faithful to the original phone’s design, it added a few modern features like a color screen, camera and internet access. It even kept the symbolic game Snake, which many of today’s adults would have spent hours playing as teenagers.

But while nostalgia is certainly a selling point to many people, not everyone is a fan.

“I'm so sick of nostalgia as a ploy (噱头) for profit. From the ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan, to the endless Star Wars and X-Men movies, we’ve become a world obsessed with looking backward for lazy sources of joy”, wrote tech reporter Thomas Ricker on The Verge.

But will the magic of nostalgia work with the Tamagotchi? According to Julia Alexander, editor for video website Polygon, it seems pretty unlikely.

After trying the new product, Alexander soon found out that little has been changed since the original.

“I grew up and, unfortunately, the Tamagotchi didn’t,” she wrote.

So when it comes to nostalgia, maybe the fond memories of our favourite childhood products are best left as that-fond memories.

1.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?

A.To promote the new Tamagotchi.

B.To compare some hit video games.

C.To explore why “nostalgia” is valued these days.

D.To analyze whether it was wise to bring the Tamagotchi back.

2.According to the text, the success of Pokemon Go and Nokia’s new 3310 lies in the fact that they both_________.

A.use argumented reality technology

B.look exactly the same as the original version

C.made creative adaptations from the old version

D.changed what we think about entertainment

3.Why isn’t Thomas Ricker a fan of using nostalgia for profit?

A.It could make people less inventive.

B.The original products were often bad.

C.It could make people become addicted to the past.

D.It ruins our tonal childhood memories.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that the author__________.

A.isn’t completely supportive of re-releasing old products

B.believes that nostalgia is a great selling point

C.believes the new Tamagotchi will appeal to the public

D.loves products that can help revive her good memories

I will never forget the darkness, the pain and strong desire to die.

November arrived grey and busy, and going into an even more stressful. December, I was filled with anxious thoughts.

A visit to my father’s grave is often a good chance to cry and when I leave I feel a little more at peace. But this time was different. I drove home and every night for the rest of that week, I cried.

On Saturday, I watched a TV program teaching baking, and then I started to learn. By the end of the weekend, I had a dining room table covered with sweet treats. I packaged them up in tins, attached a label to each of them with “winter love” on it, and dropped them off on a few of my neighbors’ porches (门廊) before work. It shocked me how much it lightened my mood, seeing a small package lost on a porch.

The thanks I received later from the neighbors made me light up. It felt so good, and it distracted me from my dark thoughts.

By January I had developed a routine: on Sunday I’d bake cookies and package them up, and on Monday I'd deliver them. Every week I added a few different people to my delivery route, baked a few different kinds of cookies.

Somewhere along the way things started showing up on my doorstep a homemade cup, a pair of socks with tiny cookies and even a gift certificate from the local bookstore. Every single one melted my heart. But what I really appreciated was how people began to share their own stories of mental health with me. There is no greater honor than to be trusted with another’s life. I was overwhelmed by the love and care of my community. It humbled me that something so simple had created such incredible kindness. It reminded me that there was good in me, in my neighbors, in the world.

I was shifting into a new season of light, while letting go of a season of darkness. What had begun as an attempt to bring light into my own darkness had been transformed into a story more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed. It reminded me that there is beauty in being kind. That life is tough, but there is a quiet strength in knowing you are not alone.

1.After she started sharing cookies with neighbors, the author_________.

A.gained trust and care from them

B.added other things to her delivery list

C.felt her life was no longer busy or stressful

D.found some of them had more mental problems than her

2.What is the author’s attitude toward her future life?

A.Positive. B.Cautious. C.Doubtful. D.Concerned.

3.What is the main purpose of this passage?

A.To express gratitude to caring neighbors.

B.To speak of the benefits of baking cookies at home.

C.To share how being kind helped her regain hope.

D.To show the importance of a closely connected community.

It should come as no surprise that England has some of the world’s most interesting attractions for literature lovers, from birthplace museums of some of the world’s most celebrated authors to everyday sports made famous through fictional accounts.

Bath

In England’s West County, not far from the border with Wales, the gorgeous Georgian town of Bath is an undisputed must-visit for fans. Some of the country’s most celebrated authors have lived (and written) here, including Mary Shelley, of Frankenstein fame, along with her poet husband, Percy Bysshe Shelly. However, the town’s best-known former resident is Jane Austen, who spent five miserable yeas in the spa town. The Jane Austen Centre and its Regency Tea Room are among Bath’s most-visited attractions, and there is a 10-day festival held every September that honors the writer and her work.

London

London has long been a favorite setting for English storytellers, and the capital city has appeared in countless stories and novels over the years, from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to Helen Fielding’s bestselling Bridget Jones books. Sherlock Homes had a flat on Baker Street in his crime-solving days, and you might know Soho as the home turf of the legendary Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Charles Dickens is perhaps the best-known(or at least most celebrated)author of the lot, and there are dozens of Dickensian London tours available to literature lovers. Scrooge keeps all office in Cornhill part of the City of London financial district, while Fleet Street makes an appearance in the Pickwick Papers and A Tale of Two Cities. Finally, Oliver Twist fans might remember that the Artful Dodger tricks young Oliver to reach Fagin’s den, located in Saffron Hill in Camden.

Stratford-upon-Avon

The birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon, has built an entire tourism industry around the Bard. Although many of Shakespeare’s plays were set in faraway destinations such as Greece, Italy, Denmark and a make-believe island in the middle of the ocean, there are still plenty of attractions that fans won’t want to miss. Here You can visit Shakespeare’s birthplace along with the homes of his mother, daughter and granddaughter. Most visitors also make a point of catching a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

And for the full Stratford experience, travelers can stay the night at one of the Towns many historic hotels; Billesley Manor Hotel is a popular choice, and rumor has it that Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in a tiny chapel on the grounds way back in 1582.

1.What happens in every September of Bath?

I’d like to share with you what has happened to the transportation in our city.

Firstly, great changes have been taken place to the transportation inside the city, which makes it convenient for citizens to get around. Some narrowly streets have been broadened, but there are less traffic jams. Secondly, transportation to other cities had also improved. Several highways are now on construction. Two high-speed railways connected our city to the national high-speed railway web is close to completion. At that time, the travel time to Beijing will be reduced to three hour. What deserves to be mentioned is that a airport has been in use for several years, making your city more and more popular.

How to Express Gratitude to Your Loved Ones

Write “thank you” cards. “Thank you” cards aren’t just meant for your teachers; you can give them to anyone who has influenced your life in a positive way. You can write these cards to your best friend, and 1..

Do favors for your friends. If you want to express your gratitude, then you shouldn’t do favors for your friends just because they’ve helped you out recently or because you want something in return. Instead, 2..

Listen. Just sit down with the person, shut off your phone, make eye contact, and take the time to really hear the person out, instead of interrupting or planning your response in your head.

3.. Don’t compare the person’s experiences with your own unless you really think it will help.

Tell your family members how much you thank them. You may be taking your family members for granted without even realizing it. If you want to show your family members how much they mean to you, then all you have to do is 4., and to show that you appreciate all of the love, rides, food, help, and any other offerings they have given you.

5.. Another way to express gratitude is to thank a person in front of other people. You shouldn’t do this in a way that makes the person embarrassed, but you should make it clear how much the person means to you and how hard he or she has worked for you.

A. to try your best to satisfy them

B. Express gratitude to the person publicly

C. help them out just because you care for them

D. Don’t give advice unless the person asks for it

E. because your parents love you and care you deeply

F. to remember to tell them that you love them every single day

G. you don’t need to wait for a special occasion to send one along

Abandoned around 900 years ago soon after its decoration started, Ta Keo (塔高寺) has been revived by Chinese and Cambodian experts.

The Angkor (吴哥窟) complex spreads over an area of 400 square kilometers. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992. However, due to heavy rains, stealing and lack of protection for centuries, most temples of Angkor were seriously damaged.

In order to better protect and conserve these pearls of human civilization, China joined ICC-Angkor, an international campaign launched by Cambodia and  UNESCO in 1993. From Chausay Tevada to Ta Keo, the Chinese team has earned trust and established a good reputation.

“Its unfinished status shows the construction procedures of temples in Angkor. This gives Ta Keo irreplaceable value in the study of Angkor’s architecture,” said Jin Zhaoyu, an engineer from the CACH (中国文化遗产研究院).

Such uniqueness, however, presented greater challenges. Compared with Chausay Tevada, it covers a larger area and has more risks including unsteady stone structures, a poor drainage system and fallen key parts.

“Because the construction is unfinished, many fallen parts are not carved, leaving little information of its relations with other parts,” said Jin.

Jin showed archives of those fallen parts, each with its ID file, picture and dimensions. He said, “Every stone is unique. If one stone is in the wrong position, the gap will grow wider as you restore it and an accurate restoration will be impossible.”

To better understand the temple’s structure and precisely restore it, the team applied the most advanced technologies, including 3D laser scanning and mapping, structural research and drone recording, to build a complete digital model of Ta Keo.

Jin demonstrated the 3D model system, with which they restored the temple hundreds of times. “I can measure the dimensions of every stone and every gap in computer, and search the right stone that can fit in the gap,” Jin said.

This is much easier said than done.  Dozens of Chinese experts from various fields worked together with Cambodian colleagues to overcome a string of obstacles. It took them eight years to restore Ta Keo.

A long time ago, and still in some countries today, the dollar and penny did not even exist. Actually, trading a cow for two pigs is still the norm (常态) for many cultures. So how is it that we get to use paper and coins?

The biggest challenge for ancient cultures was to have a system that would allow people to exchange products with each other. However, the problem came up when one person was in need of something immediately that they didn’t have a product to trade. For example, a farmer that needed wheat only had fruit to exchange but the fruit wasn’t ready to hand over for another two months. This is what started the idea of a “common currency”. The farmer could buy what he needed with “currency” and just as important, the value of the goods he was exchanging was standardized. He did not have to worry about giving anything in return now or later; his deal was complete. Thus “money” was born.

Over time, each country has developed its own currency and something that might cost 1,000,000 lire in one country might be 1 dollar in the US currency. Most countries also frequently use powerful political people as the “face” of their currency. The US currency is the best example of this. Can you name all the presidents that currently appear on not only paper money but also coins?

The real excitement, however, is the future of how we buy things. People have started to use debit cards (借记卡) that allow you to pay using your bank account rather than cash. That has given way to something called Mondex. Mondex allows you to “wave” your card past any special device that can read these cards. You no longer have to insert, swipe () and then punch in numbers, which could cause security problems.

1.What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

B.To explain what money was like in history.

C.To tell us that there was no money long ago.

D.To compare the difference between a cow and two pigs.

2.The farmer had an idea of using currency when ________.

A.he had a product to exchange B.he had made a lot of money

C.he had nothing to trade for what he needed D.he would harvest his fruit

3.Mondex is a kind of card which can ________.

A.keep you safe if you are in trouble

B.save you a large amount of money

C.help you trade safely and conveniently

D.make you happy whenever you are bored

4.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.The evolution of payment. B.The trade in ancient times.

C.The use of money in the world. D.New ways of payment.

Mrs. Jones was my first patient when I started medical school — and I owe her a lot.

She was under my care for the first two years of my medical training, yet I knew very little about her, except that she was thin, perhaps in her mid 70s. It might seem rather negligent not to know the basic facts of my patient, but I had a valid reason — Mrs. Jones was dead, and had been dead for about three years before I made a patient of her. Mrs. Jones was the dead body that I dissected (解剖) over the first two years of my medical training.

Of course, her name wasn’t really Mrs. Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be conducting research into someone’s body without even knowing its name, so out of courtesy, I thought she should have one. “Me and Mrs. Jones, we’ve got a thing going on.” went the song coming out of the radio as I unzipped the bag of her on my first day — and so she was christened (命名).

As the months passed, I soon forgot that Mrs. Jones had, in fact, once been alive. One day, though, she suddenly became very human again. I’d been dissecting Mrs. Jones a good 18 months before I got around to the uterus (子宫). After I’d removed it, the professor came up to me, “If you look at the opening carefully, you’ll see that the angle indicates that this woman has had several children, probably three.” I stared at it, and I suddenly felt very strange. This woman, who had given me something incredibly precious that I’d begun to take for granted, wasn’t a dead body. She was a person, a mother, in fact.

At my graduation, the same professor came over to congratulate me. I explained the story about Mrs. Jones to him, and recalled what he’d told me about her having children and how that had affected me all those years ago.

“Well,” he said, “at the beginning of your training you had a dead body and managed to turn it into a person. Now you’re a doctor, the trick is to have a person and not turn them into a dead body,” and he laughed, shook my hand and walked away.

1.What does the underlined word “negligent” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Irresponsible. B.Pitiful.

C.Regretful. D.Miserable.

2.How did Mrs. Jones get her name?

A.She was named after the author’s favorite singer.

B.It came from a song being played during their first meet.

C.It was passed down from the seniors of the author’s school.

D.It just occurred to the author when he opened the bag of her.

3.What could be the author’s feeling for Mrs Jones Now?

A.Indifferent. B.Ashamed.

C.Grateful. D.Guilty.

4.What did the professor imply by his words in the last paragraph?

A.Medical students are able to bring the dead back to life.

B.Good doctors never fail to save their patients from dying.

C.Medical staff ought to have respect for life and humanity.

D.Being a doctor has nothing to do with the medical training.

Dreaming of summer picnics filled with family and fun? We’ve come up with 4 of the top picnic areas across the US.

Cumberland Islands, Georgia

A few hours south of Savannah, this national seashore is a picnic paradise. It’s an unspoiled place in the Deep South with over 50 miles of hiking trail.
