For businesses to develop, every business leader needs to create a workplace that is not only productive, but enjoyable too. Here are some ways to encourage workers to work harder and also keep them happy.

1. If you want to keep your workers on track, you’ll need to provide a space where they can relax from stressful work for a while. This can be in the form of a game room, or a sofa where workers can leave their desks for a short time to talk with colleagues and relax.

Make them feel valued.2. Do not let them feel they are just someone who turns up, gets their work done and leaves at the end of the day. An easy way to do this is ask for their feedback (反馈) at company meetings.

Give them more responsibilities. Having your workers do the same tasks day in day out is a productivity killer. So provide them with new tasks that allow them to step outside of their comfort zone.3.

Reward them. Let’s face it! Everyone wants some kinds of rewards when working for a company.4. You don’t necessarily have to increase someone’s pay to encourage them — just make sure you provide enough encouragement so that you keep top talent.

Be straightforward. If you let your workers stay in the dark about the goings-on of your business, they’ll feel being kept out.5. Always be straightforward with your workers and let them know about any trying times the company faces.

A. Listen to their needs.

B. Create a welcoming environment.

C. It can be as simple as a free lunch or a gift card.

D. Set an example to your workers by working hard.

E. In this way they will increasingly believe in their abilities.

F. So keeping open communication is very important for a good team.

G. Encourage workers, making them feel they are important to you.

There’s a lot we know about eggs: they are great for breakfast and you can cook them in different ways. One topic of debate, however, is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones. According to Sharman Hickman, the director of Community Outreach and Education for Hickman’s Family Farms, genetics (基因学) not nutrition determines the eggshell color and thus the egg’s price.

The chicken breed (品种) and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment (色素 ) genes, which coat the egg and result in a colored shell during the egg-laying process. Although all eggs start out white in color, shell color can range from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds, Hickman adds. Breeds such as the Leghorn chicken lay white eggs, while the Orpington lays brown eggs and the Ameraucana produces blue eggs.

Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers. Hens that produce colored eggshells, however, tend to be larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted layer. Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.

Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently, it’s impossible to know

their nutritional make-up from the shell color alone, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” she says. “But it’s important for people to know that the color of the eggshell has nothing to do with the egg’s nutrient content or shell thickness.”

What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on, according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients. No matter what your preference is, don’t judge an egg by its shell color.

1.Which of the following is one of the arguments about eggs?

A.Which eggs are difficult to break.

B.How eggs can be cooked healthily.

C.Why colored eggs are more expensive.

D.What the best time to eat eggs should be.

2.What makes the eggshell color different?

A.The hen’s breed. B.The size of the hen.

C.The color of the eggs inside. D.The length of the laying process.

3.Why do farmers love the Leghorn breed more?

A.They lay brown eggs. B.Their eggs are larger.

C.Their eggs sell better. D.They are productive.

4.What can we learn from Malkani’s words in the last paragraph?

A.It takes efforts to test eggs’ nutrition.

B.It’s meaningless to study an eggs color.

C.Personal preference matters a lot in choice-making.

D.An egg’s nutrition is closely related to the hen’s feed.

I developed postpartum depression (PPD) (产后抑郁症) after giving birth to my first son. Actually I started feeling bad before I even had my son. The night I arrived home after giving birth, I had my first panic attack. I doubted I was having a slight heart attack.  The next day,  a public health nurse visited our home to see if everything was fine with me. She reassured me that I didn’t have a heart problem, and informed me that it was likely a panic attack. The nurse visit was part of a program that provided support for new moms. Sadly, it didn’t include any information on PPD.

By my six-week postpartum checkup, I knew something was wrong. I was having difficulty falling asleep and I felt like I was slowly going crazy. Panic attacks were more frequent. I talked with my obstetrician (产科医师), but unfortunately, she was not trained to recognize or cure PPD. Now I didn’t know whom to turn to for help.

I told my situation to my mom and my husband but they didn’t understand what I was really experiencing. They figured that being a new parent was tough for anyone, so feeling a little down after giving birth — “baby blues” — was just normal and not necessarily a sign of depression. But my cousin, also a new mom, knew me well, and she could see that something was wrong.

With my cousin’s encouragement, I went to see my family doctor and I was finally diagnosed (被诊断为) with PPD. I started taking medication, and began to feel better. Eventually, I rehabilitated, feeling like my old self again.

It is common for new moms to get the “baby blues” mixed up with PPD. I do think more attention should be drawn to the latter. After all, a new research finds that about 1 in 7 new mothers will be seriously troubled by PPD.

1.Why did the nurse visit the author?

A.To care for her baby. B.To cure her of her heart disease.

C.To help check her condition. D.To offer her information on PPD.

2.After talking with her obstetrician, what did the author realize?

A.She was really suffering from PPD.

B.Her obstetrician couldn’t really help her.

C.She should have received training in PPD.

D.Her obstetrician didn’t really care about her.

3.What does the underlined word “rehabilitated” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.recovered. B.succeeded.

C.resigned. D.returned.

4.What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?

A.To tell about her suffering “baby blues”.

B.To express her ideas about giving birth.

C.To call for attention to postpartum depression.

D.To show the importance of family to new moms.

A ship that sank off the coast of California decades ago was recently reconstructed in detail. The 3D digital model even included hundreds of sponges (海绵动物) that have gathered on the ship’s surface since it sank.

Named American Heritage, the supply ship sank in Santa Monica Bay on May 4, 1995, and for decades its exact location was unknown. Researchers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) spotted a strange shape in that area in 2008. But it wasn’t until May 2018 that MBARI scientists identified its exact location and mapped the site in detail, showing what appeared to be a shipwreck (失事船只).

Even then, the identity of the shipwreck was uncertain. Yet another MBARI team revisited the location to do further exploration. They sent remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and took photos of the damaged ship. Though it was covered with deep-sea sponges and other animals, the scientists were able to spot letters spelling out its name, confirming that the shipwreck was American Heritage.

As one of the MBARI scientists who found American Heritage, chief ROV pilot Knute Brekke had worked on the ship before. And he was on duty with the diving company American Pacific Marine — the owner of American Heritage — the night the ship began taking in water and eventually sank.

MBARI spokesperson Kim Fulton -Bennett said to Live Science about the discovery, “The model is not complete, as floating ropes and poor visibility kept the pilots from getting too close to the wreck. But the 3D reconstruction is detailed enough to show that American Heritage is now home to thousands of sponges. Shipwrecks often turn into the shelter for diverse communities of ocean life.”

1.What is the main idea of the text?

A.A valuable treasure was discovered.

B.Special sponges were found under sea.

C.3D model reconstructed a sunken ship.

D.A sunken ship was gotten out of water.

2.Which is the right order of the following events?

Something strange was found in the area.

ROVs were sent under sea to take photos.

A ship sank in Santa Monica Bay.

The identity of the ship was confirmed.

Scientists tried to locate the shipwreck.

A.②③⑤④① B.③①⑤②④

C.⑤③①④② D.④③①②⑤

3.What can we learn about Knute Brekke?

A.He was familiar with the sunken ship.

B.He was in charge of a diving company.

C.He was responsible for the rescue work.

D.He was the first one to witness the accident.

4.What’s Kim Fulton-Bennett’s attitude towards the 3D model?

A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Amazed. D.Objective.

Why should we never stop learning

Today we often think learning is what we do in school, and once we’ve got our college degree, it’s time to work and stop leaning. In fact, things aren’t really that black and white. We carry on learning in every part of our lives. 1.. Instead, it is about self-growth and enrichment. Here are some reasons why we should keep learning, no matter how old we are.

2.

For me, the first reason to keep learning new things is that I enjoy it. It’s different from what I get from a movie. Although learning something new is not always comfortable, I’m happier in the long run. The more you learn, the more confident you will become, and the more pleased you will be with yourself.

Learning keeps you healthy

Studies have shown that our brains are best developed when we use them often. 3.. Learning how to eat well, and how to prepare and cook food or learning a new sport are all great ways to keep better control of your body.

Learning puts you on the fast track to success

4. If you think that you’ve learned everything that you need to know about about running a business, or managing your team, you’ n fail to compete against those who just love to learn it.

Learning helps you have better control of your life

In your personal life, you’ll want to keep learning too. For example, learning about managing your money—things that we are not often taught in school—can turn your life around. You can spend them on the most valuable things. 5.

So what have you learned this week? Why not make a list of what you want to learn next week?

A. As is known to all, successful people keep lifelong leaning.

B. It brings more friends to us.

C. Learning adds pleasure to your life.

D. You can also learn to manage your time, thus avoiding making you life a mess.

E. It helps you get better prepared for examinations.

F. Learning often doesn’t mean to pass exams.

G. Older people who carry on leaning have more chance to get free from illnesses of aged people.

Washing windows on a skyscraper is a dirty job. Hanging off the side of a building can also be dangerous, notes Oliver Nicholls, 19. So this 12th-grader invented a robot to handle the job.

Some recent incidents inspired his project. In one, a couple of high-rise window washers were standing on a platform that fell down. No one died, but the pair was seriously injured. Oliver also witnessed someone fall and break his leg while cleaning a glass awning (雨篷) over the entrance to a building.

The new robot is about the size of a medium-sized picnic cooler and weighs 12 to15 kilograms. It's designed to hang off the side of a building from ropes, just as current windowwashing platforms do. A hose(软管)carries water to the robot. A cable (电缆) delivers it electric power. The computer controls the robot up-and-down movements by adjusting the ropes from which the robot hangs. When the robot needs to move from one window to another, a set of propellers(螺旋桨) starts to work. They push the robot a short distance away from the building, while the ropes slide along a railing(栏杆)to carry the robot over to the next window. Then, as a different set of propellers holds the robot tight against the window, the cleaning cycle repeats. Oliver tested his robot by cleaning sample windows he'd built in his backyard. The robot’s propellers can hold the robot against a building even in winds as high as 45 kilometers per hour, the teen reports. He performed those tests using his family’s leaf blower.

Besides limiting the chance of injury, this window-washing robot could save building owners a bit of money. If commercialized, Oliver estimates it would cost about 11,000. That's about the same cost as hiring a crew to clean a 7-story building. So Oliver suspects his robot might be able to pay for itself after cleaning just one such building.

1.What encouraged Oliver to develop his project?

A.His interest in housework. B.The accidents he experienced.

C.The high costs of washing windows D.Risks facing high-rise window washers.

2.What do we know about the robot?

A.It carries water itself. B.It is supported by a platform.

C.It hangs from ropes while working. D.It can produce power while working.

3.Why did Oliver test his robot with a leaf blower?

A.To record its working speed B.To see its wind-resistance ability

C.To test whether it could remove the windows D.To know if it needed a different set of propellers

4.What does the last paragraph imply about the robot?

A.It is costly but time-saving. B.It still has many limitations.

C.It has huge commercial potential D.It has become a favorite of building owners

Visitors to Britain are sometimes surprised to learn that newspapers there have such a large circulation. The “quality” newspapers are often held up as an example of impartial journalism, but the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express usually impress newspapermen even more because they both sell about four million copies every day. British families generally buy a newspaper every morning and frequently take two or three on Sundays, but the vast circulation figures obtained are not only due to the Englishman’s thirst for news.Because the newspapers are all published nationally, copies can be delivered everywhere at the same time.

Though people abroad often know the names of the national papers, they seldom realize that there is another branch of the British press which sells almost as many copies. Local newspapers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Almost every town and country area has one. Nearly all of them hold their own finance and many of them are very profitable.

These papers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events — births, weddings, deaths, council meetings and sports — but the content is naturally influenced by the kind of community they serve. Editors prefer to rely on a small staff of people who all know the district well. A great deal of local news is regularly supplied by clubs and churches in the neighbourhood and it does not get out of date as quickly as national news. If there is no room for it in this week’s edition, an item can sometimes be held until the following week.

The editor must never forget that the success of any newspaper depends on advertising. He is usually anxious to keep the good will of local businessmen for this reason. But if the newspaper is well written and the news items are carefully chosen to attract local readers, the businessmen are grateful for the opportunity to keep their products in the public eye.

Local newspapers do not often comment on problems of national importance and editors rarely hold with taking sides on political questions. But they can often be of service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to provide better shopping facilities, improve transport in the area and preserve local monuments and places of interest.

1.The Daily Mirror impresses newspapermen more because_____.

A.it has a larger circulation than many other famous papers

B.it is of better quality than many other papers

C.it is sold nationally

D.it is delivered everywhere in Britain

2.Local papers are preferred by readers who_____.

A.are interested in news B.are much interested in local events

C.want to get news as quickly as possible D.work in churches and clubs

3.According to the passage, businessmen would like to advertise in papers if _____.

A.the papers are well written B.the news items are carefully chosen

C.the news involves them D.the papers are popular and can attract readers

4.The last paragraph implies(暗示)that ______.

A.local papers seldom comment on politics

B.local papers can sometimes influence policy making

C.local papers are more concerned about their own communities

D.local papers do not take sides on problems of national importance

Hobbs was an orphan(孤儿). He worked in a factory and every day he got a little money. Hard work made him thin and weak. He wanted to borrow a lot of money to learn to paint pictures, but he did not think he could pay off the debts.

One day a lawyer said to him, “One thousand dollars, and here is the money.” As Hobbs took the package of notes, he was very dumbfounded. He didn’t know where the money came from and how to spend it. He said to himself, “I could go to find a hotel and live like a rich man for a few days; or I give up my work in the factory and do what I’d like to do: painting pictures. I could do that for a few weeks, but what would I do after that? I should have lost my place in the factory and have no money to live on. If it were a little less money, I would buy a new coat, or a radio, or give a dinner to my friends. If it were more, I could give up the work and pay for painting pictures. But it’s too much for one and too little for the other.”

“Here is the reading of your uncle’s will(遗嘱),” said the lawyer, “telling what is to be done with this money after his death. I must ask you to remember one point. Your uncle has said you must bring me a paper showing exactly what you did with his money, as soon as you have spent it.”

Dear Sir or Madam,

I booked a room in your hotel for my friend Tom yesterday. But I am real sorry to tell you that I had to change my booking now. My friend Tom had planned to visit our city this summer vacation, but I booked Room 101 for him. However, I was telling that an unexpected thing happened, that he had to deal with by himself. As the result, he couldn’t come as plan. He had to change into the booking date for the room. I would appreciate if you could push the booking date back the week. I hope this will not cause you any troubles. I am looking forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

English learners can improve their abilities to remember and use new words by testing themselves. So next time you are studying English, try to test 1. (your).     Mental health experts estimate that depression affects more than 120 million people worldwide. It severely affects the person’s quality of life and, in extreme cases, can lead to people killing themselves. Anti-depressant medicines have been shown as an effective treatment for most patients. But the drugs are unable to help a small number of people with the disorder.

For such person, doctors may suggest deep transcranial magnetic stimulation(经颅磁力刺激), or DTMS for short. In this treatment, patients wear a special helmet connected to a machine. An electric coil(线圈)in the helmet sends out regular waves of electromagnetic energy. These beating sounds produce changes in the brain area responsible for the disorder.

Electromagnetic stimulation(刺激) was first tried to treat depression over 30 years ago. Now, a new generation of wiring can direct the energy on one part of the brain. DTMS starts with daily 20-mimute-long treatments for 20 to 30 days. The patient then returns for treatment two to three times a week for several weeks.

The only side effect is sometimes slight head pain. Aaron Tendler is the chief medical officer of Brains way, the company that makes the machine. He said that it’s hard to say how long the effects of DTMS last.

DTMS is being used in Europe to treat both depression and other conditions. Patients there are getting treated for dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. And DTMS is even being used to help some Europeans give up smoking.

But in the United States, the Federal Food and Drug Administration(FFDA) has approved it only for the treatment of depression which cannot be treated by medicine. But clinical tests are continuing on other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Both of the disorders, like depression, can get in the way of a person working and getting along with people.

1.Why are people concerned about depression?

A.Because it may lead to death sometimes.

B.Because only a few people can recover from it.

C.Because it does not affect social communication.

D.Because medicine treatment usually fails to work on it.

2.How does DTMS help patients with depression?

A.By wearing a helmet in daily life.

B.By performing an operation on the head.

C.By making them face the disease bravely.

D.By letting electromagnetic waves stimulate the brain.

3.What can we infer about DTMS from the text?

A.It is quite safe to use it worldwide.

B.The use of it in America is forbidden.

C.It can cure patients of depression in a month.

D.It will be widely used in treating more diseases.

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A.Finding Hope in A Hopeless Depression

B.DTMS - A New Treatment for Depression

C.The Killer of Modern Humans Depression

D.Using Electromagnetic Waves to Cure Depression

How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change is the latest movie from filmmaker and climate activist Josh Fox. The movie is the third film in a three-part series about climate change.

In 2010, Fox’s documentary Gasland explored the hotly debated process of removing natural gas from the ground. He examined the subject again in Gasland II. Fox was against traditional fossil fuels(矿物燃料) and in support of renewable energy. In his third film, Fox says pollution from fossil fuels must be reduced. Without limits, there will be more extreme weather, like dry weather, rising sea levels and lack of food and water. “When you really meet that head on, it causes unbelievable danger.”

Fox notes there are things that climate cannot change. “Those are our value structure and that is what the film starts to explain. We start to really emphasize the things that are inside-courage, love, generosity and creativity. I think those are the centers of what we talk about when we talk about a response to climate change.”

In the new film, Fox travels through a sunless forest in the Amazon with local activists to measure oil spills. He goes to a village in Ecuador to learn how people there stopped a pipeline from being built. He joins young people in Australia to stop ships from entering the port of Newcastle.

“You should probably know the negative part of what we’re about to do. This is the short list: drowning, arrest, being run over by boats, being carried away in water into the Pacific Ocean, cultural disrespect and big waves.”

Also in the film, Fox talks to Ella Zhou, an energy expert. She explained the importance of what she calls“moral(道德) imagination”. “I think that it forces us to get out of our box of thinking about, for example, what is being successful. It allows us to have a moral value about what we want as a person. What do we want to do for the world and for ourselves? ”

1.What does the underlined word “that” refer to?

A.The extreme weather. B.The lack of food and water.

C.The pollution from fossil fuels. D.The support for renewable energy.

2.What did Fox start to explain in his third film?

A.The centers of our value structure.

B.The correct response to climate change.

C.The terrible effects climate change causes.

D.The process of removing natural gas from the ground.

3.Why did Fox make a short list?

A.To call on people to join him.

B.To express his love for adventure.

C.To prove that filming is a difficult career.

D.To stress the difficulties they met as climate activists.

4.According to Ella, which of the following is TRUE about moral imagination?

A.It tells us the way to success. B.It makes us creative in thinking.

C.It encourages us to realize our dreams. D.It helps us find the true meaning of life.

Many of us rarely check in with ourselves. We rarely wonder what we really want, what benefits us, what delights us, what hurts us, how we can respect ourselves, what people are actually healthy for us to be around and what the most supportive decision is. Or we may know these things but we don’t act on them.

One reason is that we get caught up in what everyone else is doing and thinking. I have to buy that, too! I need to be on that diet if she’s trying it. They think therapy is a waste of time and money. He suggests that I should lose weight. They completely disagree. Maybe I do, too?

When we get caught up like this, we silence ourselves. Here I don’t mean asking others for feedback(反馈) or advice or helpful insights. I’m referring to times when we ignore ourselves and when we let others’ perspectives set aside our own.

When we get caught up like this, what can help is to refocus. To ask ourselves: OK, but what do I want? What works for me? We can ask ourselves questions to check in with ourselves, our needs, our desires, our intentions, and our hearts. These questions reveal important answers. Asking these questions may lead to a new and deeper understanding or perspective. It puts us back in the driver’s seat.

And as I say many times, asking ourselves all sorts of questions means we are listening to ourselves. We’re admitting that our thoughts and feelings matter. Because they do. And in asking questions, in taking the time to listen to the answers, we are building self-trust. We are caring for ourselves in a powerful way.

1.What do we know about people described in Paragraph 1 and 2?

A.They tend to follow suit. B.They like to learn from others.

C.They are too lazy to think hard. D.They have a strong desire to win.

2.Why do we make ourselves silence?

A.Because we follow our own feelings.

B.Because we feel doubtful about things.

C.Because we don’t think about our own ideas.

D.Because we ask others for feedback or advice.

3.Which of the following questions can help you refocus?

A.Why are they happier than me? B.What do my family need the most?

C.What matters most to me in this world? D.How can I follow the traditional values?

4.How can you be in charge of your life?

A.Having a strong power. B.Ready to start out.

C.Leading the way for others. D.Back in the driver’s seat.

A knock at the front door announced a visitor. Phil Radcliffe opened the door, looked down, and found a small boy of about 10, head down and face hidden, nose sniffling(抽鼻子), obviously in some unhappiness.

Phil and his wife Molly lived in this neighbourhood for almost three decades. The families here all knew and trusted one another. Youngsters bounced from home to home looking for friends and entertainment. In the school holidays, Molly and Phil had been known to take children at a time to the local cinema to give some of the parents a break.

Having taken him to the living room and had him seated, Phil asked the boy, “Philip, what’s happened?”

The boy seemed genuinely upset by the inquiry. “Sorry, Mr. Radcliffe,” he sobbed, “My dad’s just left home. He’s not going to live with us anymore. Mum’s crying. It’s made me cry. I don’t think I’m going to see him again.”

Phil sat down next to him and put a comforting arm around his shoulders, trying to reassure the youngster, “I’m sure that you’ll see your father again very soon, Philip. You’re a lovely boy and he’ll want to see you a lot. And your teachers will understand if sometimes you’re a bit sad.”

The boy wiped away his tears with the back of a hand.

“Let me get something for us,” Phil suggested. He went into the kitchen, and then returned with an orange juice for the boy, a coffee for himself and a selection of biscuits for them. However upset he might have been, young Philip was obviously happy with the drink and concentrated on the chocolate samples among the biscuits.

Once the boy seemed more settled, Phil proposed, “Perhaps you should call your mum and tell her where you are, so that she doesn’t worry.”

“It’s OK, Mr. Radcliffe,” he insisted. “I’ll go home in a few minutes. But I like talking to you.”

“You can stay as long as you want, Philip. I just don’t want your mother to think that she’s lost you.”

Four Habits to Help You Succeed

Nobody would like to experience failure. We all want to succeed. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. 1.

• Know your values.

Finding your values is in line with creating motivation.2.Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.

3.

Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here. 4.If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take far too long.

• Set a time for success.

Set a date for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal.5.By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.

• Don’t give up because of failure.

Failure can’t be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap! Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and go on.

A. Make the right decision.

B. Pick a goal and focus on it .

C. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.

D. Keep it realistic, while not giving yourself too much time.

E. I have made a list of four habits to help you set goals and realize them.

F. Sit and reflect on what you value most.

G. Push yourself to be courageous, and take that next step.
