Science is finaly beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens.

As Annie Potts of Canterbury University has noted, chickens distinguish among one hundred chicken faces and recognize familiar individuals even after months of separation. When given problems to solve, they reason: hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give up an immediate food reward for a slightly later (and better) one. Healthy hens may aid friends, and mourn when those friend die.

Pigs respond meaningful to human symbols. When a research team led by Candace Croney at Penn State University carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O's. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the pigs walked only toward the O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not inconsiderable feat of reasoning.

I’ve been guilty of prejudiced expectations, myself. At the start of my career almost four decades ago, I was firmly convinced that monkeys and apes out-think and out-feel other animals. They're other primates(灵长目动物), after all, animals from our own mammalian(哺乳动物的) class. Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, whales too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants express profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on these mammals helped to fuel a viewpoint shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedure kin laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.

Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chickens, pigs, goats, and cows, I started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring an ethical (伦理的) revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will our ethics start to catch up with the development of our science?

Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what about the rest of us? Can paying attention to the thinking and feeling of these animals lead us to make changes in who we eat?

Prateek Sharma was born into a family of farmers. After 10 years of being a chief manager of Kotak Mahindra Bank, he did a good job and earned a good pay. But Prateek couldn’t continue the corporation life with ease, as his heart was always in farming. So he worked as a banker on weekdays and on weekends travelled 100 km to get to his 5-acre in Dhaba Khurd.

By the end of 2015, Prateek had set up a house on his farm to grow offseason vegetables. Prateek thought he’d quit his job once he was able to earn enough from farming, but this wasn’t an easy decision to make. This was because costs to grow these vegetables were very high, along with the fact that farmers weren’t a part of the value chain and thus couldn’t decide the price of their own vegetables.

Fortunately, Prateek met Vinay Yadav, another educated farmer. They then decided to start their own value chain and sell their vegetables and grains, while skipping the middlemen. The variety of vegetables they grew wasn’t enough, so they decided to form a group of farmers.

Once the plan was ready, the group was registered by the name of Farmer Producer Organization (FPO). However, the trial failed in the first year as most of the farmers were grain growers and had limited knowledge of growing vegetables. However, the largest reason was the switch to organic from chemical.

Luckily, once the soil was used to organic methods, the next round of crops were successful and the FPO had a good amount of produce. So at the end of 2017, Prateek finally quit his job and devoted all his time to farming. Now he’s successful and recently his team has started two farmer resource centers at Dhaba Khurd and Nathrula Canj.

1.Why did Prateek have trouble continuing his life as a banker?

A.He felt it so boring to be a banker.

B.He almost never satisfied his boss.

C.He found farming easier to do well.

D.He was enthusiastic about farming.

2.Why was it difficult for Prateek to decide on quitting his job?

A.The prices of organic products were low.

B.The income from farming wasn’t much.

C.He had no money to put into farming.

D.He found farming produce hard to sell.

3.What did Prateek and Vinay Yadav set about doing after they met?

A.Building their own marketing system.

B.Raising the prices of their products.

C.Switching from chemical to organic.

D.Adding the kinds of vegetables grown.

4.What mainly resulted in the failure of FPO’s first year trial?

A.Their no experience in growing vegetables.

B.Their poor management on the employees.

C.The soil’s not adapting to organic farming.

D.The wrong ways of doing organic farming.

I live in a peacefully village in the countryside where we have many friendly neighbors. Several day ago, a heavy rain hit the surrounding region. Several dams in the upper reaches of the river was broken through, cause a flood in the river nearby. Two bridges were also washed away. When a flood drew back, many big fish were trapped in the river. They had raised in the dams. Every day, one of their neighbors went to catch up fish with a net.

Yesterday, the neighbor came to give us four big fresh fish, that had been frozen in his fridge. We had fish soup for lunch that day. What delicious!

Symptoms of Dehydration(脱水)

You’re bad- tempered.

Researchers tested the mood and concentration of 25 women who drank healthy amounts of water one day, and then didn’t over the next two days. When slightly dehydrated, the women reported tiredness, bad temper, headaches, and difficulty focusing. In a separate test, men with mild dehydration also had trouble with mental tasks. 1. Scientists are still trying to figure out why.

You have a bad workout.

2. It impacts how much you can push yourself. Even a 2 to 3 percent fluid loss affects your ability to get a good workout and more than 5 percent dehydration decreases exercise capacity by about 30 percent. A no-brainer way to avoid dehydration and dehydration symptoms is to aim for this much water per day.

3.

Driving while dehydrated may be just as dangerous as getting behind the wheel drunk, in terms of how many mistakes you could make on the road. British researchers had participants take two-hour drives [using a simulator (模拟器). When they drank enough water, there were 47 driving errors. 4.

You feel dizzy when you stand up too fast.

One of the signs of dehydration is when your blood volume and pressure drops, it can leave you feeling dizzy or faint, or bring on that rush of light-headedness after you quickly get up from sitting or lying down.

The exact treatment for dehydration symptoms depends on age and how severely dehydrated someone is. 5. Most of the time, however, people use some over-the-counter solutions for kids, and adults can drink more water

A. You drive like you’re drunk.

B. Dehydration can be life-threatening.

C. To get rid of dehydration you have to replace lost water.

D. In extreme cases, people might go to the hospital for a treatment.

E. Dehydration reduces blood pressure and makes the heart work harder.

F. But when it came to mood changes, women changed much more than men’s.

G. But when they are short of water, there were more than doubled driving errors to 101.

Scientists in New Zealand have found fossilized (化石的) leg bones from a penguin believed to have been about the size of an adult human. The previously undiscovered giant penguin species likely stood about 1.6 meters tall and weighed up to 80 kilograms.

The penguin existed about 60 million years ago. The bones are believed to be from the oldest of several species of giant penguins that lived after dinosaurs died out. A fossil hunter found the bones last year in the Waipara River bed near the city of Christchurch. The bones are from the animal’s legs and feet. Scientists confirmed that the bones came from a newly discovered species.

Paul Scofield is senior curator (馆长) at New Zealand’s Canterbury Museum. He co-wrote a paper on the discovery. He said that the bones are an important find. They show that the species is similar to another giant penguin found in Antarctica in 2000. The latest discovery, he said, helps show a clear connection between the two areas during the Paleocene period. This period lasted from 66 million to 56 million years ago.

Scofield said the penguins were able to grow larger after entering a new development period following the extinction of dinosaurs, sea reptiles and huge fish. Scofield added that the giant penguins became extinct within 30 million years, as large mammals began to rule the waters.

John Cockrem is a penguin expert at the country’s Massey University who was also not involved in the research. He said the discovery helps add to what we know about giant penguins. He said it also confirmed New Zealand as the penguin center of the world.

New Zealand is believed to have been home to many giant bird species that later disappeared. These included the world’s largest parrot, a giant eagle and an emu-like bird called the moa. Recently, Canterbury Museum announced the discovery of an unusually large parrot believed to have lived about 19 million years ago. Scientists say the bird stood about one meter tall.

1.What is special about the penguin found in New Zealand?

A.The place it lived in. B.The age of its existence.

C.Its species and size. D.Its shape and habits.

2.Why did the giant penguins die out?

A.Large mammals controlled the sea.

B.They were killed out by huge fish.

C.Climate changes were not fit for them.

D.They grew too large to feed themselves.

3.What do we know from the last paragraph?

A.All kinds of penguins live in New Zealand.

B.Many giant birds used to exist in New Zealand.

C.The world’s largest parrot lives in New Zealand.

D.New Zealand owns the most bird species in the world.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Similar Penguin Fossils Have Been Found Again

B.An Ancient Creature Has Been Found in New Zealand

C.Some Giant Penguins Appeared after Dinosaurs Died Out

D.Scientists Found Bones from Giant Penguin in New Zealand

Vaping can be just as damaging to your health as smoking. But the minute you kick the habit, you’ll feel a difference.

Vaping is the use of electronic cigarettes-e-cigarettes. Vaping became mainstream in the United States in the late 2000s. When e-cigarettes first hit the market, people believed they were a safer choice to tobacco cigarettes. We now know, however, that vaping, like smoking cigarettes can be quite damaging to your health-and equally addictive.

Kids and teenagers are especially attracted to vaping, thanks to attractive flavors. Vape use in high school students rose by 900 percent between 2011 and 2015.

Quitting vaping can be difficult, just like trying to stop smoking. There are some immediate, though often temporary, negative effects. The positive ones soon outpace the negative, however.

In as little as 20 minutes, your heart rate returns to normal, your blood pressure drops, and your circulation starts to normalize. Your breathing may improve, too.

Daily e-cigarette doubles a persons risk for a heart attack. If you quit, however, the risk begins to fall very quickly. Also, vaping, like cigarette smoking, can blunt your senses, reducing your ability to smell and taste. After just 48 hours without vaping, you may begin to notice your ability to taste and smell food has improved. Nicotine affects more than your brain: new research suggests nicotine can raise your blood sugar, too.

Smokers often have a troublesome cough or make a breathless sound when they breathe that many refer to as a smokers cough. Smoking even e-cigarettes can badly harm your lung health and make fighting off infections difficult. Quitting, however, will help your lungs recover. After one month, your lung capacity improves.

There will come a day when the bad habit of vaping won’t have any lasting influence on your body and your health.

1.What did Americans think of e-cigarettes?

A.They were cheaper. B.They were fashionable.

C.They were less harmful. D.They were environment-friendly.

2.What makes vaping popular among kids and teenagers?

C.Its shape. D.Its colour.

3.What does the underlined word “blunt” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Destroy. B.Benefit. C.Sharp. D.Dull

4.What does the author intend to do by writing the text?

A.Introduce the use of e-cigarettes.

B.Point out how e-cigarettes harm kids.

C.Encourage people to refuse e-cigarettes.

D.Compare e-cigarettes with traditional ones.

Last night, when I went to see my grandmother, she was sitting alone at the nurse station with her word search book. My grandmother was sitting at the desk with her book but no pencil just staring at the letters as if she was trying to find the word. I came to her and said hello.

Usually, she at least knows I am connected to her somehow but this time, she looked at me with doubt. I introduced myself and told her that I was her granddaughter. “I don’t know who you are,” she said.” Do you want to go outside?” I asked. “okay,” she said.

We got her things and I wrapped it all in a blanket we would use as a tablecloth. I asked her if she could hold it while I pushed her wheelchair and held her cup of tea.

She held her hands out and I placed the cloth bundle () on her lap. I put the cloth on the table and she helped smooth it down-then I put the rest of the items on the cloth..

Now she was just staring at me as if confused, as if trying to figure me out. “Do you know who I am?” I asked. She said, “I don’ t really know.”“ I am your granddaughter,” I said. “I am not sure what that is. I don’t know, I don’t know you,” she said.

I think of my friend whose mother has not known him for years, has no recollection (记忆), and doesn’t speak any more. It is a painful sight for all those living who remember. I am grateful that my grandmother is still so present. I have a sinking feeling that our days are numbered.

For now, she is still here, still says thank you, and still loves me from a deep and secret place. Tomorrow, I will see her and she may or may not know me-and that will be okay. I still know her.

Land of fire and ice: Iceland

Join an unforgettable tour of Iceland’s splendid landscapes, timed to arrange four days filled with volcanic and geological adventure, and evening opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis.

Day 1: Vatnajokull Glacier (冰川)

Today you’ll take a walk on Europe’s biggest ice cap-Vatnajokull-which has around 30 glaciers flowing out from it. No experience is necessary to take part in the hike. It’s discouraging to think that the glacier is retreating due to rising world temperatures, and in future years the glacier may be gone. If you prefer a relaxing morning you can explore the surroundings of the farm stay and head to the Thorbergur Centre.

Day 2: Secret lagoon (泻湖) and Reykjavik

This morning we make our way to the Lava Centre which is an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition describing volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. After our visit, we will continue to the Secret Lagoon natural hot springs, located in the small village called Fludir, giving you the opportunity to relax in the warm waters before travelling to Reykjavik.

Day 3: Reykjanes peninsula (半岛)

Head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is a land-born, highly volcanic counterpart of the Mid-Atlantic Spreading Ridge where two tectonic plates part at an average rate of 2.0-2.5 cm/yr. Four volcanic systems and fissure (裂缝) groups line the peninsula from SW to NE. They contain open fissures, normal faults, high-temperature fields and volcanic fissures.

Day 4: Depart Reykjavik

Today is departure day and time to say “sjaumst”. Your group departure transfer will take you to the airport for your flight home.

1.Which of the following may make you feel worried?

A.Taking part in the hike.

B.The future of the glacier.

C.Walking on Europe’s biggest ice cap.

D.Exploring the surroundings of the farm stay.

2.What may visitors do at the end of the second day?

Most of us probably dreamed about becoming an astronaut when we were little. But how many of us actually became one, or are at least working toward it?

The advice ''Always follow your dreams'' is something that is typically easier said than done.

But still, this is the one piece of advice that Alyssa Carson wants to share with her peers. This 17-year-old girl from the US has become one of the candidates for NASA's 2033 project to go to Mars.

Carson has dreamed of going to Mars since she was only three years old. Watching an astronaut-themed cartoon and learning that humans have only been to the moon but not Mars Carson decided that she wanted to be the first one to do so. Since then, she has worked hard toward this goal. Now 17, Carson is continuing with her space training while still taking on her high school work like a ''normal'' teenager, except that she studies all her subjects in four languages—English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

''I don't think there's anything specific that makes it easier for me or makes it something that others can't do, '' Carson said in an interview with Uproxx News. ''I've just really focused myself on what I want to accomplish. ''

And Carson is willing to make sacrifices for her dream. She's fully aware of the danger of the mission and the possibility that she might never be able to come back. She also accepts the fact that she can't get married and start a family. But Carson believes that it's all worth it, summarizing her view with this ancient Greek proverb she once quoted? ''A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they’ll never sit in. ''

So after all the hard work that Carson has done and all the sacrifices she's made, every — thing still boils down to the simple phrase, ''follow your dreams''. And while some people's dreams may sound out of this world, in Carson's case, they literally (毫不夸张地) are.

1.What will happen to Carson in 2033 if everything goes well? (no more than 8 words)

2.Why did Carson decide to be the first one to go to Mars? (no more than 20 words)

3.How does Carson differ from other students for the school work? (no more than 10 words)

4.How do you understand the underlined sentence? (no more than 20 words)

5.What do you think of the girl? And why? (no more than 25 words)

Men have long been puzzled by the amount women pack, when they go on holiday. They despair (绝望)as they watch their beloved spend much money on extra baggage charge. Nearly half of these women admitted to lying about the weight of their case to their partner before leaving for the airport, in fear of being made to unload some unnecessary items.

But it's a fact that women pack more than they need. On average, a woman needs around 57 items in suitcase for a two-week holiday, yet most women pack nearer to 150 items, ranging from skirts, tops, underwear and high heels. In addition, women pack more sun cream, make-up and hair appliances than they are likely to need. They all take up space in the suitcase, only a third of them will see the light of day once at the holiday place.

79 percent of women admitted to taking extra items with them, with the reason for this being ''just in case''. Women plan their holiday wardrobe months in advance. Packing enough clothes and other items to last a month is not enough for some women. They'd take a chance to shop for new items while holidaying abroad. So they'll return with even more luggage in their cases.

Professor Karen Pine said, ''Women are tempted to take familiar items with them on holiday, often everything except the kitchen sink. Some people find traveling stressful, particularly when they'e unsure about the home comforts available at their holiday place. They over- pack to help cope with those feelings of stress and reduce the uncertainty. ''

This will come as no surprise to some men, who are used to trying to squeeze their partner's luggage into the boot of the car with their own, smaller case. On the other hand, men pack very lightly, with only an average of 40 items for a two-week holiday.

1.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Women are good at picking holiday suitcase.

B.Women over-pack by two third when on holiday.

C.Women will go shopping every time they go on holiday.

D.Women take good care of themselves while holidaying.

2.How many items will a woman pack for a 2-week holiday on average?

A.About 57 items. B.About 79 items.

C.About 97 items. D.About 150 items.

3.Women pack too much on holiday because ________.

A.they want to show off their items

B.they prefer a more comfortable holiday

C.they are afraid they'll need them during the holiday

D.they would like to clean their clothes wardrobe very much

4.How does a man feel about his wife packing too much?

A.Opposed. B.Supportive.

C.Positive. D.Concerned.

5.What do Dr Pine's words imply?

A.Going on holiday will cost a lot.

B.Women don't prefer to go on a holiday.

C.People tend to feel tired and stressed on holiday.

While you may be doing everything right, ignoring just one or two steps in the process may keep you from getting a job, especially in this fierce market. Here is a checklist that covers some of the major links in the job-search chain.

THE RESUME—Make sure it is up-to-date and tailored to the types of jobs you are seeking for. Have someone else look at your resume. If you cannot afford a career coachgive your resume to friends or family members to scrutinize. Have copies of your resume printed so that you are ready to hand them out at interviews.

COVERING LEITERS—Maybe you've set up a few basic styles in advance, but that's not enough. Each covering letter should be designed to suit the job for which you are applying.

THE WARDROBE (衣橱)—Check your wardrobe to ensure that you have the appropriate professional dress, including shoesready for interview.

NETWORKING—Don't isolate yourself from others. Network through e-mail messages, phone calls, appointments and meetings keep you in touch with the outside world and prevent you from becoming depressed.

APPLICATION—A glance at huge online job sites isn't usually the best way to find a job. You are more likely to succeed through the people you know via networking.

INTERVIEWS—If you've got plenty of interviews but no return calls or job offers, take a look at your interviewing skills. This is one area where investing in a career coach may pay off. But if you can't afford one, try to find a job group or service that conducts free mock (模拟) interviews.

SUPPORT SYSTEMS—Finally, recognize that looking for job is rather difficult. Even at the best of times, a job hunt is often about rejection, and that can be hard to endure. Staying in touch with family, friends, professional networks and fellow job seekers can help you to maintain a positive attitude and a sense of perspective.

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dump, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co- worker, neighbor, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?

Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. SoI believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

D.family members should play tricks on each other

A.explaining carefully B.speaking loud

C.keeping silent D.laughing hard

4.By writing the passage, the author mainly intends to ________.

A.talk about his own understanding of humor

B.encourage people to be humorous in daily life

C.introduce a practical way to get through daily life

D.convince people of the power of being optimistic about life

One rainy evening I went to fill up at the gas station. A pre-teen boy approached my car with a thick hat pulled around his face. He asked me for money to help him and his mother stay in their hotel for an additional week.

He stated that if they did not come up with $25 they would be driven off that same evening.

Having worked in social services before, and being a little doubtful, I asked how come his mother hadn’t found out social services for help. The boy said that they needed to remain in their hotel for one more week until his grandmother, who lived out of town, could take them in.

I gave the boy what I had— $5. He thanked me and continued to wander the parking lot asking for help. I got my gas and drove away. A separate time some weeks before, a boy asked me for money and I told him I didn't have any though I did. The doubt in me had won out.

Yet, I thought about it, felt ashamed at my doubt and went looking for the boy to give him a dollar. But it seemed that he had disappeared into thin air. ''This time, '' I thought, ''I'll do it differently. ''

I went to my bank and withdrew an additional $20, then I returned to the gas station. The boy was still there. I observed him immediately, shyly approaching strangers who walked past him without notice. I pulled up beside a pump and waved at the boy to come over. I handed him the $20 bill.
