The high school life of three years have made me learn a lot of things. Among them teamwork is the most significantly for me. In fact, I didn’t realize its importance after I was elected monitor of my class. In the beginning, I did almost all the duties myself. However, other students cared little about class activity. As a consequence, I  tired out and depressed. Then I turned to my head teacher, whom advised me to cooperate with others. Thus I began to recognize the strengths at my classmates and managed to have everyone to play a role in class. It is working in teams instead of on my own which has freed me of trouble and made my work more efficient. Without teamwork, I wouldn’t have made such many achievements at school.

The Segway(平衡车)was invented by Dean Kamen, and was first shown to the public in 2001 by ABC’s Good Morning America program. 1. The word Segway is remarkably close to the word ” segue” which means “to move smoothly from one thing to another”

The Segway looks like a large stick with two wheels. The wheels are connected to a platform. The stick has handles for a person to hold. The person stands on the platform and holds the handles. The transporter moves forward or backward when the person moves his or her body in that direction. 2. Computers and certain devices on the Segway make the vehicle move and balance. It is powered by batteries that can be recharged. It can travel at a speed of 20 kilometers an hour.

3. Today these vehicles are used to take people on tours in parks .The Angel Island in San Francisco uses the Segway to take people around. The Segway was also used by the police at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

However, the vehicle has not found acceptance from the general public. 4.A review of the history of the Segway will show that some people are still uncomfortable about riding a two –wheeled self-balancing vehicle. Another reason is that the US has different regulations on the roads and streets where the Segway can be used. Most states recommend that a helmet be worn when riding this vehicle.

5. While its usage may be limited for now, there is still no telling what it will be used for in the coming year.

A. The history of the Segway has just begun

B. The driver turns the handles to go left or right.

C. If you have never experienced a Segway tour before, we expect you to join us .

D. Those who have ridden on the Segway say it is best used for short journeys.

E. As a result, the most popular use of the Segway is in tourism, particularly for city tours.

F. This unique invention was intended to help people travel throughout public city streets.

G. One reason is that the price is similar to other vehicles which they are more familiar with.

Languages will continue to diverge. Even if English were to become the universal language, it would still take many different forms. Indeed the same could happen to English as has happened to Chinese: a language of intellectuals which doesn’t vary hugely alongside a large number of variations used by local peoples.

We will continue to teach other languages in some form, and not just for reasons of practical use. Learning a language is good for your mental health; it forces you to understand another cultural and intellectual system. So I hope British education will develop a more rational approach to the foreign languages available to students in line with their political importance. Because so many people believe it is no longer important to know another language, I fear that time devoted to language teaching in schools may well continue to decline. But you can argue that learning another language well is more exhausting than, say, learning to play chess well—it involves sensitivity to a set of complicated rules, and also to context.

Technology will certainly make a difference to the use of foreign languages. Computers may, for instance, relieve the hard work that a vast translation represents. But no one who has seen a computer translation will think it can substitute for live knowledge of the different languages. A machine will always be behind the times. Still more important is the fact that no computer will ever get at the associations beyond the words associations that may not be expressed but which carry much of the meaning. In languages like Arabic that context is very important. Languages come with heavy cultural baggage too—in French or German if you miss the cultural references behind a word you’re very likely to be missing the meaning. It will be very hard to teach all that to computer.

All the predictions are that English will be spoken by a declining proportion of the world’s population in the 21st century. I don’t think foreign languages will really become less important, but they might be perceived to be— and that would in the end be — a very bad thing.

1.According to the text,we can infer that Chinese _______.

A.is a language full of cultural background

B.is narrowly used by local peoples

C.will be regarded as important as English

D.will soon become the universal language

2.Which of the following best describes the author’s opinion ?

A.Foreign languages should be taught for political importance.

B.Learning another language is just like learning to play chess well.

C.British education lacks a rational approach to the teaching of foreign languages.

D.Learning a language need to know a country’ cultural and intellectual system.

3.Why can the computer translation make a difference to the use of foreign languages?

A.It can replace for live knowledge of the different languages.

B.It can always keep the pace with the times in the translation.

C.It can reduce the hard work that a vast translation represents.

D.It can express the implied meaning beyond word associations.

4.What is the text mainly about?

A.Learning foreign languages is a challenging job.

B.Learning a language is good for your mental health.

C.Cultural background blocks the understanding of a language.

D.Computers play an important role in learning foreign languages.

In recent years, stressed-out urbanites have been seeking refuge in green spaces for the proven positive impacts on physical and mental health, but the benefits of “blue space” — the sea and coastline, but also rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, even fountains — are less well publicized, yet the science has been consistent for at least a decade: being by water is good for body and mind.

“Many of the processes are exactly the same as with green space — with some added benefits, ” says Dr Mathew White, a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter.White says there are three established pathways by which the presence of water is positively related to health and happiness. First, there are the beneficial environmental factors, such as less polluted air and more sunlight. Second, people who live by water tend to be more physically active. Third — and this is where blue space seems to have an edge over other natural environments — water has a psychologically restorative effect. When you are sailing, surfing or swimming, says White, “you’re really in tune with natural forces there.” By being forced to concentrate on the qualities of the environment, we access a cognitive state honed over millennia. Water is, quite literally, immersive.

Catherine Kelly is a wellness practitioner who teaches classes in “mindfulness by the sea”. She says the sea has a meditative quality.

“To go to the sea is synonymous with letting go, ” says Kelly. “It could be lying on a beach or somebody handing you a cocktail. For somebody else, it could be a wild, empty coast. But there is this really human sense of: ‘Oh, look, there’s the sea’ — and the shoulders drop.”

1.Why do people go to the “blue space” for a relaxation ?

A.To seek positive effect on body and mind.

B.To have a good swim in the blue sea.

C.To consider the beneficial environmental factors.

D.To tend to be more careful and active.

2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The characteristics of the beneficial and friendly environmental factors.

B.The classification of being by water is good for body and mind.

C.The importance of the beneficial and friendly environmental factors.

D.The causes of being by water are good for body and mind.

3.What does the underlined word “immersive” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Being interested. B.Being forced.

C.Being involved. D.Being moved.

4.What does Catherine Kelly find about “going to the sea” according to the text?

A.Trick of the lesson B.Secret of the happiness.

C.Sense of human beings D.Broadness of the sea

There are times in our lives that we may feel as if we need to walk away from everything. We are tired of trying so hard to work towards our fixing goal in life. Life seems to have become too complex to bear it. It is for these times in our lives that we need to remind ourselves that this will pass. We have joy, love or laughter in our lives which we had simply lost sight of.

There is nothing wrong with taking a step back. Give ourselves the time to rest and relax may be all we need to return to our normal activity. We'll then work energetic with new sense of commitment to our best life.

What Recycling Will Look Like in 10 Years

As businesses rush to become greener, this is what recycling may look like a decade from now. To begin with, more goods will be made of existing materials. The increase in the reuse of existing materials, including recycled plastics, glass and more will reduce the demand for raw materials (原材料). You’ll find more clothing, toys, park benches, etc. made of recycled water bottles. 1.. Thus all resources will be kept in circulation (流通) with no end.

Reusable products will become more popular. Not only will companies take up the duty to reduce waste. 2.. Take single-use straws (吸管), for example. They’ve been banned everywhere because they are so bad for the environment and wildlife. Furthermore, beginning in 2021 the European Union will ban single-use plastics. 3.; we also need to change consumers’ habits by changing the way they think about single-use plastics.

Chemical recycling may become common. Though the field is still in its early stages, the process of chemical recycling may increase in the coming years. 4.. “This is all just a huge expensive business,” Denise Patel said, adding that reducing the overall use of plastic is a better solution.

5.. Currently, thin plastic isn’t often recycled. As it’s so lightweight, it can jam recycling machinerybut throwing it out isn’t ideal either. After all, it takes about 450 years to break down. You can return it to a store that collects them, or use a service that picks up hard-to-recycle items from your home for a fee.

A. We cannot rely only on recycling

B. New plastic is cheaper than recycled plastic

C. In the future, thin plastics will be recycled more readily

D. However, chemical recycling is not without disagreement

E. This creates an economy where no resource will be wasted

F. Individuals (个人) will also be expected to use more reusable products

G. The campaign puts the focus on individuals to clean up their plastic mess

“ New and improved. ” These words are put in so many marketing campaigns that we tend to accept them as linked. But many new drugs aren't an improvement over the best existing drug for a given condition, and the fast drug-approval processes in recent years have added to the uncertainty about their advantages.

A recent report in the British Medical Journal, "New Drugs: Where Did We Go Wrong and What Can We Do Better?, analysed the issue, The authors looked at 216 drugs approved between 2011 and 2017 152 were newly developed, and 64 were existing medicine approved for new uses. Only 25% offered a major advantage over the established treatment, and fully 58% had no confirmed added benefit to reduce symptoms or improve health-related quality of life.

"This doesn’t mean there's no added benefit," lead author Wieseler said. “It just means we have no positive proof. Either we have no studies or have studies not good enough. ” Wieseler and her co-authors work for a German institute which evaluates new treatments and advises on whether the country's health care system should pay a premium ( )for them. Such organizations , known as health technology assessment ( HTA) agencies, work a little differently in the US, says Sean Tunisa researcher in Baltimore: “ If payers think a new drug isn't better than an existing drugthese agencies will require .that hospitals try the cheaper drug first. ”

Germany's HTA demands trials to prove that a new treatment beats the existing standard. This isn't always practical For one thing, such studies can be expensive and time-consuming, with no guarantee of success. Secondly, it can discourage companies from attempting to develop new alternatives. This is already happening. Drug developers are increasingly focused on areas where there are no good treatments to compete with, such as rare diseases.

This lack of meaningful data to guide patients is a major point of Wieseler's paper- With accelerated approval, there are more products approved, with a greater amount of uncertainty about risks and benefits. But there are other solutions besides drug trials. One idea is to require postmarket studies to track the effectiveness of newly approved drugs—a step too often neglected.

1.What message does the recent report convey?

A.Many new drugs have no improved advantages.

B.The approval processes for new drugs are too fast.

C.Improved drugs have advantages over old ones.

D.Before 2017 no improvement was made to drugs.

2.What will US HTA agencies do when no advantage is found in new drugs?

A.Remove government premium on them.

B.Get hospitals to use the cheaper drugs.

C.Arrange financial support for the patients.

D.Put new drugs on further trials and studies.

3.What's the disadvantage of Germany's HTA trial demands?

A.Making drug companies think of illegal ways to cut cost.

B.Pushing companies to try alternatives for existing drugs.

C.Getting patients to depend on the government for support.

D.Holding companies back from improving existing drugs.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.The Advantage of Existing Drugs

B.Misunderstanding of New and Old Drugs

C.A Dilemma with New Drug Alternatives

D.Peopled Preference for New or Old Drugs

That morningI dropped our eldest at kindergarten and returned home to let our two younger children play while I worked on my medical report. It was wonderful, but it hit me that my career in hospital wasn't making a difference in anyone's life. I needed something that would stretch my limits and push me to grow. My career enabled me to work from home. I could work from home, and become a foster(领养)mother, providing safety for a child who needed it desperately.

On Monday morning, I picked up the phone and dialed the number I had googled for the nearest Department of Children’ Services. The man on the other end was receptive to my questions and explained the next step of training, involving eight weeks of classes designed to prepare and educate foster parents. We continued through all the classes, the home visits , background checks, and seemingly endless steps.

Five long months after we were approved , the phone Tang. In the middle of the night , I woke my husband and rushed to East Tennessee Children's Hospital- Our placement was waiting for us in the emergency room, sick and lack of nutrition. It didn't take long for us to realize the full depth of her suffering. Six months later, her half-brother came to us by our request. We now had five children under our care.

On August 12, 2016, our family of seven walked into a small courtroom. The children's lawyer and social worker were there. With just a few words, our adoption was finalized. These two amazing children weren't going home, because they were already home. We are their forever family5 and they are our forever children. We may not be able to change the entire world, but we have changed the world entirely for our new children.

I remember one day that I was seven, my parents were away from home and I left alone .Though they gave me enough money to buy something to eat, but I decided to cook me a wonderful meal. I went to the market, buying some meat and tomatoes and then came back. After cooking, I cut up the meat into piece and put them in the pot. When the pot was hotter enough, I began to cook the meat. After that, I cooked some tomato soup with an egg in it. How deliciously the food tasted! Believe it or not, now I often act as the cook at home when my parents are busy.

Tricks(窍门)to make friends at a new school

Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be difficult, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes. Making new friends can be hard, too. 1.

Be yourself.

Never change who you are to try to fit in. If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. 2. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

Be friendly to others.

3. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

4. .

A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people. If you see someone you know, smile or say “Hi". Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you’re from.

Remember people’s names.

You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 5. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname (昵称). You'd be surprised at how often this might come in handy.

A. People may become angry if you just begin by saying “Hey” each time.

B. Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school.

C. Join in after-school activities you like.

D.These tricks can help you quickly turn some strangers into friends.

E. People often stay together because they have similar interests.

F. Don't sit at the back of the classroom where other people don't notice you!

G. Believe in yourself.

Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood. Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.

There are four main kinds of blood. Most people born with one of these four: Type A,Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.

The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules(分子). These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原). These antigens are found with type A, B and AB blood but not with type O.

More than twenty-five years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal-type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes(). But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.

Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements(*k)and is not too costly,it could become a widely used life-saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.

1.How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood?

A.Hope more people to donate type O blood.

B.Make the most of the present type O blood.

C.Develop new ways of using type O blood.

D.Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.

2.What make people have different kinds of blood?

A.Sugar molecules in red blood cells.

B.People's different living conditions.

C.Peoples various immune systems.

D.The variety of peoples cells and genes.

3.What can we infer from the text?

A.Type O blood can be safely given to anyone

B.Antigens could easily be removed to create universal blood.

C.A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood.

D.The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Four different kinds of blood

B.A new way to make type O blood

C.The latest research on blood type

D.Find the proper type of blood
