No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”until it has been read aloud by someoneteacher or student.Better stillperhapsis the practice of reading it twiceonce at the beginning of the discussion and once at the endso the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry arein factpreparations for reading it aloudand the reading of the poem isfinallythe most telling “interpretation” of itsuggesting tonerhythmand meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voiceon records or on filmis obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it orbest of allreciting it.

I have come to thinkin factthat time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” itif there isn't time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry.Poetry is “a criticism of life”and “a heightening(提升) of life”It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”and it “can save your life”It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential natureabout its sound as well as its senseand they must make__room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

Did you know people who live in different parts of China have different habits and preferences? For example, people from southern China prefer to eat vegetables, while people from north China like to eat meat. According to a new study in a journal, gene variations (基因变异) might be responsible for these differences. Researchers from China’s BGI collected genetic information from 141, 431 Chinese women, who came from 31 provinces and consisted of 36 ethnic minority groups.

The researchers found that there are six gene frequencies that are different among people from both northern and southern China. They found that natural selection has played an important role in the ways that people living in different regions of China have developed, affecting their food preferences, immunities(免疫力)to illness and physical features.

A variation of the gene FADS2 is more commonly found in northern people. It helps people metabolize (新陈代谢) fatty acids, which suggests a diet that is rich in flesh. This is due to climate differences. Northern China is at a higher latitude. This weather is difficult to grow vegetables in. Therefore, northerners tend to eat more meat.

The study also found differences in the immune systems of both groups. Most people in southern China carry the gene CR1, which protects against malaria. Malaria was once quite common in southern China. In order to survive, the genes of people in the south evolved to fight against this disease. However, people in the south are also more sensitive to certain illnesses, as they lack the genes to stop them.

Genes can also cause physical differences between northerners and southerners. Most northerners have the ABCC11 gene, which causes dry earwax, less body smell and fewer sweats. These physical differences are also more beneficial to living in cold environments. Southerners are less likely to have this gene, as it did not develop in their population.

1.What did the new study focus on?

A.Regions. B.Vegetables.

C.Gene variations. D.Ethnic minority groups.

2.What is the main function of the gene FADS2?

A.It helps store fat. B.It helps digest meat.

C.It helps gain weight. D.It helps treat illness.

3.According to the study, most northerners ______.

A.are immune to malaria B.catch blood-borne illnesses easily

C.have no body smell D.sweat less frequently

4.How many differences did the study find related to genes?

A.Two. B.Three.

C.Four. D.Five.

In the UK, Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated on 5 November and the night skies are filled with color. It’s a special day in honor of a historic event.

In 1606 English Catholics were angry because the King of England, James I, was treating them badly. In protest (抗议), a group of men made a plan, known as the “Gunpowder Plot”, to blow up the House of Parliament in London. An huge explosion was planned for 5 November, the day the king was due to open parliament.

The group chose a man called Guy Fawkes to light the gunpowder. The plot did not succeed — the gunpowder was found before it exploded and all the men involved were arrested, beaten and executed. To celebrate his survival, King James ordered the people of England to have a bonfire on the night of 5 November.

On 5 November people remember the plot by celebrating Bonfire Night. All over Britain there are firework displays and bonfires with models of Guy Fawkes, made from clothes and filled with newspaper, which are burned on the fire. The fireworks are a reminder of the gunpowder that Guy Fawkes hid in the cellar of Parliament.

Children used to take home-made Guys onto the streets and ask for “a penny for the Guy” to collect money to buy fireworks. At the Edenbridge Display in Kent last year, a 9-meter “celebrity” Guy was burned of Wayne Rooney wearing Shrek-style ears and a Manchester United football shirt.

It’s normally quite cold in November in Britain, so on Bonfire Night people wear hats, scarves and gloves to spend the evening outside. Traditional Bonfire Night food is hot baked potatoes. There are also toffee apples and in the north of England they eat a special type of cake called parkin.

Nine-year-old Patches the Dachshund was saved by a 3D-printed skull she received after the removal of an orange-sized tumor (肿瘤).

Patches had a small bump on her head for years. Her owner took her to see vets before ending up in the hands of Dr. Michelle Oblak.

Dr. Oblak had been researching 3D-printing uses for dogs. According to Oblak, a dog in Patches’ situation would need an expensive operation where the animal’s tumor and skull would be removed and then replaced. However, Oblak believed Patches was the ideal candidate to receive it.

Dymeck, Patches’ owner, said that she was hesitant (犹豫的), but the potential to help others convinced her. “They felt she could recover from this,” Dymeck said. “And to be part of research was a big thing for me – if they can learn something from animals to help humans, that’s important.”

The brand new method used to save Patches’ life started with a CT scan of her tumor. Then, Oblak and her team digitally removed the tumor in Patches’ skull. After that, they mapped out what the 3D-printed skull piece would look like and where it would fit on the dog. “There’s little room for error,” Oblak explained. “We’re talking less than two millimeters or else the plate wouldn’t fit.”

After everything was drawn out, Oblak sent the designs over to the 3D-printing company and just two weeks later Patches’ customized skull (定制的头骨) was ready. Then Patches went under the knife. After a four-hour operation, the dog was back to herself. Patches is now cancer-free. She has a scar on her head but it seems like a small price to pay for the life-saving operation.

“Our hope is this is something that could be more widely available on a broad scale,” Oblak said. “It went very well.”

1.What exactly is Patches?

A.A pet. B.A doctor.

C.A servant. D.A patient.

2.What was the problem with Patches?

A.She had a headache. B.Her skull was broken.

C.She suffered from a cancer. D.Her head was covered with scars.

3.Which word can best describe Dymeck

A.Experienced. B.Responsible.

C.Unselfish. D.Talented.

4.What can we learn about the operation from the passage?

A.A small error happened. B.It cost Oblak a lot of money.

C.It was challenging and demanding. D.A CT scan mapped out the 3D skull piece.

Last week our class hold a discussion about whether we should have a picnic. I first raised myself hand, and soon classmates joined in this longer discussion.

Some thought it interested for all of us to get closely to nature. We were so tired that we wanted have a break as soon as possible. However, others said they would rather stay at home than going out for a picnic. They explained it that a picnic would not make them relaxed but more tired. At the end of the class, we voted but agreed to go to the open air, make me feel very happy.

The use of color has a long history in human life. We live our lives in color from our earliest days. 1. We use it both as a symbol of identity and a way of expressing our individuality (个性) through decoration. And we use different colors to send out very different messages.

2. Look at the schoolboy in the photo. From his colorful traditional dress, other people in Peru know he comes from the Quechua community. We wear uniforms at school and work, and we dress in our favorite sports team colors to say the same thing: 3.

And now look at the Huli villager in the photo, who is getting ready for a local festival. He’s applying the traditional colors of red, black and white to his own personal face pattern. Face-painting is an important part of the celebrations. These days people are starting to experiment with brightly colored paints as well as traditional colors. In fashion-conscious Europe, the “in” color changes every season. 4.

Marketing experts understand the power of color very well. Packaging and labels in eye-catching colors stand out on the supermarket shelf. 5. A calm blue for a bank stands for trust, dark green says quality, or brown and green means eco-friendliness.

A. We are family.

B. We love this game.

C. People need a sense of group identity.

D. Color plays an important role in our daily life.

E. Different people have different understanding of colors.

F. And companies select the color of their brand very carefully.

G. For example, women are wearing shades of purple this autumn.

Name-calling, teasing, pushing and fighting—whether you have experienced it or not, the chances are that these are the things that appear in your mind when you hear the word “bullying”. Yet, many of us know little about the serious, lasting harms bullying could cause.

If you’ve watched 13 Reasons Why, you’ll understand the impacts that bullying can have. The second season of the popular US teenage drama was released on May 18. It tells the story of Hannah Baker, a high school student who takes her own life after she’s picked on by fellow students, while others stand by and do nothing to help her.

One of the important messages audiences could get from the show is to treat people with kindness and respect. “It teaches us that every single thing we say and do has an impact on others,” news platform Odyssey noted.

Some may think 13 Reasons Why exaggerates (夸大) the seriousness of school bullying, but according to the US National Center for Educational Statistics, more than 20 percent of US students were bullied in 2016, and only 36% of this group reported it.

NBA player Gerald Green opened up about being called “alien hands” during his teenage years due to his big hands. “Being bullied was embarrassing,” he said. “I still remember shying away from crowds and walking around with my hands in my pockets to evade the attention from my peers.” To get away with the teasing, he found his motivation by playing basketball and making a career out of it. But not everyone is so lucky to discover a release.

According to statistics released by the US government, if someone prevents a bully, there’s a 57% chance that the bullying will stop within 10 seconds. So if you ever witness bullying, consider stepping up and supporting the victim. As US actor Brandon Flynn, who stars in 13 Reasons Why, said, “Just because you’re not the one getting bullied, it doesn’t mean it’s not your problem.”

1.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To add some background information.

B.To encourage eyewitnesses to take action.

C.To introduce a new topic of the discussion.

D.To give people advice about dealing with bullying.

2.What does the US National Center for Educational Statistics indicate?

A.Bullying isn’t a problem in many schools.

B.School bullying can’t cause too much pain.

C.Only a few people are concerned about bullying.

D.Many people who’re bullied choose not to seek help.

3.What does the underlined word in Para. 5 mean?

A.Attract. B.Focus.

C.Avoid. D.Keep.

4.What does the text tell us about 13 Reasons Why?

A.It overstates school bullying.

B.It was first shown on May 18.

C.It is mainly about school bullying.

D.It shows few people can report bullying.

In the mountainous southern Peru, Quechua women sit on the ground, chatting as they twist dry grass and shape it into long plaits (辫子). Every year for the past six centuries, each family contributes about 210 feet of plaints to build Q’eswachaka, the only surviving rope bridge that once connected the Inca Empire.

At approximately 100 feet, Q’eswachaka connects two mountains. It is rebuilt yearly by four Quechua communities who come together every second week of June to spend three days building the bridge and a fourth celebrating its completion. Before the work begins, one person asks for protection and permission. To people who gather to rebuild this structure, the bridge is a god. To build the new Q’eswachaka, one of the builders ties a rope around his waist and makes his way across last year’s structure. Once this connection is secure, the old bridge is cut loose. Then builders transport supplies and other ropes. They ride on the bridge’s cable and make its floor by hand. The skills for the bridge are communicated not through written instructions, but through apprenticeship (学徒期).

Nowadays, the bridge faces many challenges. Policy adjustments in the teaching field have caused the sharp fall in the number of Quechua speakers. Only 40% of the younger generation speaks the language of their ancestors. Since the ancestral language is necessary for the ceremony associated with Q’eswachaka, the decrease in the number of speakers will make it difficult for the tradition to continue. Besides, now Q’eswachaka is made of only one kind of plant, but it used to include other plant materials that have disappeared, which made it strong enough to serve the needs of the communities. These days, a nearby steel bridge satisfies the transport of cars and supplies, and Q’eswachaka’s construction is kept alive by tourism rather than function.

1.What’s the first step of rebuilding Q’eswachaka?

A.Use a rope to build a connection. B.Make the new bridge’s floor.

C.Destroy the old bridge. D.Transport materials.

2.What can we learn about Q’eswachaka?

A.It mainly aims to attract visitors now. B.It remains practical for local people.

C.It’s in the charge of local women. D.It’s approximately 100 feet long.

3.What can we infer from the text?

A.There are many rope bridges in Peru now.

B.Builders ask for permission from the government.

C.The new bridge is built when the old one gets fragile.

D.Quechua is important for the survival of Q’eswachaka.

4.Which can be the best title of the text?

A.Importance of Q’eswachaka. B.Development of Q’eswachaka.

The tree-lined lane is pretty in every season. I have its images hanging in our home and at my workplace. Many people have asked me about them. When I told them where I took the pictures, they were always surprised. They probably never slowed down enough from their busy lives to notice the great beauty so close to home.

I supposed there might be a big old house at the end of the lane, but when my husband, Ron, and I went up there one day to give the owners copies of my pictures, we were both pretty surprised.

The house looks like it came right out of colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, and the grounds are breathtaking. You would never know that just a quarter-mile down the lane is a busy road.

I adore the natural beauty of the countryside throughout the year, from the heavy snows of winter to the bright new greens of spring, and I hope to always live where the seasons change. The place we live is a wonderful place to raise children, and the country is just a short drive away.

Empty nesters, Ron and I take many drives together, especially in the fall. We always head for the country. As I get older, I value the peace and beauty of the countryside even more. If you take the time to look around, you will always discover something wonderful, no matter where you are. What an amazing country we live in!

After school, was about to enter into my apartment when I saw a little dirty dog lie beside the dustbin. He looked extremely weak. Immediately the homeless dog filled me of sympathy. So I decided to take him home. I gave him some food and a bath. After the bath he looked energy and refreshed. What a lovely dog!

When my parents got home, I asked that I could keep the dog. To my surprised and joy, they agreed. Up to now, he has become member of our family and everyone had enjoyed his company. Looked at the cute and happy dog today, I realize that I was right to help him. I offered him a shelter and he brought ourselves great happiness and laughter.

Picture a lecture session at a business school and your probably imagine students gazing at screens filled with equations(方程式).What you might not expect is students attempting to sing “O clap your Hands”. But Bartleby was treated to this delight on a visit to Saïd Business School in Oxford earlier this year.

There was a catch. Some of the students had to try conducting the chorus. The first to take the challenge was a rather self-confident young man. It didn’t take long for him to go wrong. His most obvious mistake was to start conducting without asking the singers how they would like to be directed, though they had the expertise and he was a complete beginner.

The session, organized by Pegram Harrison, a senior fellow in entrepreneurship(企业家精神), cleverly allowed the students to absorb some important leadership lessons. For example, leaders should listen to their teams, especially when their colleagues have specialist knowledge.

Other business schools have also realized that their students can learn from the arts. At Carnegie Mellon University , Leanne Meyer has introduced a leadership-training programme that includes poetry and a book club. She believed that involvement in such pursuits can help develop empathy(同理心) in future leaders and that the programme benefits students in terms of how they promote themselves to recruiters(招聘人员).

The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) has trained many great dramatists. It also offers training courses for managers. “Acting about finding the truth in the character and in yourself.” says Walker-Wise, one of RADA'S tutors. Being a manager involves a lot more than just setting targets. It requires empathy and a knowledge of human nature. An education in the arts might help develop those qualities. Above all, the students on Harrison's Course were experiencing something Bartleby never expected to see in those attending an MBA lecture they were having fun.

In the old days, when you had to drive to a movie theater of to to a video store to get some entertainment, it was easy to see how your actions could have an impact om the environment. You were hopping into your war, driving across town and coughing out emissions(排放)and using gas all the way.

But now that we’re used to staying at home and streaming movies, we might get a little cocky. After all ,we’re just picking up our phones or maybe turning on the TV. You’re welcome.Mother  Nature.

Not so fast, says a recent report from the French-based Shit Project. Watching a half-hour show would lead to 3.5 pounds of CO2 emissions. That’s like driving 3.9 miles. According to "Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video," digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year. Stored in data centers, videos are transferred to our terminals such as computers, smart phones, etc. via networks: all these processes require electricity whose production consumes resources and usually involves CO2 emissions.

In the European Union, the Eureca project lead scientist, Rabih Bashroush, calculated that 5 billion downloads and streams of the song "Despacito" consumed as much electricity as the countries of Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Somalia, Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic used in a single year.

Streaming is only expected to increase as we become more attached to our devices. Online video use is expected to account for 80%of all internet traffic by 2022 according to CISCO. By then, about 60% of the world's population will be online.

You're probably not going to give up your streaming services, but there are things you con do to help lessen the impact of your online use.

Here are some tips:

Disable autoplay for video on social media.

Stream over Wi-Fi, not mobile networks.

Watch on the smallest screen you can.

Don’t use high-definition(高清)video on devices.

1.It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that people think           .

A.they should welcome Mother Nature

B.watching movies at home is more fun

C.it is inconvenient to drive to a movie theater

D.streaming at home avoids possible emissions

2.We may learn from the text that         .

A.3.9 miles may produce 3.5 pounds of CO2

B.digital technologies account for 4% of electricity use

C.Online video use makes up 80% of all internet traffic

D.60% of the world’s population watch videos online

3.Why are the five countries mentioned in paragraph 4?

A.To praise their energy-efficient practice.

B.To prove the poverty of the five countries

C.To stress the popularity of the song “Despacito”

D.To show the high energy use of downloads and streams

4.How can people help to save energy when streaming?

A.Use high-definition videos. B.Turn off video autoplay

C.Stream over mobile networks. D.Watch movies on bigger screens.

The Oscar - winning 2013 musical Frozen, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, followed the tale of two princess sisters, Elsa and Anna. They were forced to grow up isolated from each other and the world because of Elsa’s potentially dangerous magic ability to control ice. The film earned an amazing $1.27 billion box office worldwide, and fans were so charmed by the characters-that they weren’t able to “Let It Go”, crazily calling for a sequel (续集).

Finally, Frozen II comes into its fans’ eyes. However, the beginning of Frozen II is not convincing, largely because it overturns much of the character development Anna and Elsa went through in the first movie. At the end of Frozen, Elsa had learned that her powers were a gift, and she had become confident and proud in using them. At the beginning of Frozen II, that confidence is gone.

Whatever technical advancements have been made in computer animation over the past six years aren’t readily apparent in Frozen II. It mostly has the same frosty look as the first film. A sea battle between Elsa and a glowing ice horse leaves the most striking impression on the audience.

The biggest failure? The music. In Frozen, even the throwaway songs enjoyed great popularity, let alone the theme song Let It Go. Returning composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez try to give Elsa two showstopping numbers: Into the Unknown and Show Yourself. But neither song reaches any emotional heights. (Never mind that there really isn’t a show to stop.)

Yes, Frozen II is a letdown to most audience, especially the fans of the original. It’s hard to see how the same team who made something so cool in 2013 could deliver something so-there’s no other word for it-lukewarm.

1.What do we know about the musical Frozen?

A.Its theme song didn’t reach fans’ heart.

B.It didn’t earn profit through its box office.

C.It was a big hit after it came into the market.

D.Its main characters lived together in their childhood.

2.What is the most impressive part of Frozen II?

A.A sea battle. B.Technical advancement.

C.A different beginning. D.The newly-created music.

3.What does the author think of the musical Frozen II?

A.Breathtaking. B.Disturbing.

C.Moving. D.Disappointing.

4.What type of writing is this text?

A.An announcement. B.A film review.

C.An official report. D.A show guide.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收银台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way to the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership— a shop selling cars— was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

I entered the shop, and one of the salesmen came to me, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
