While being absent from normal life for many days, you may find perhaps some of your clothes are overgrown with mushrooms (seriously)!1.. But at some universities in China, the scene is the total opposite.

Photos showing quilts (被子) aired have become a hit on social media.2..They are being dried on balconies (阳台), playgrounds and any available open areas at the universities ahead of the resumption (恢复) of school.

The quilts were brought by students from home and had almost gone moldy (发霉) but thanks to dorm-keepers they have gone through a process of sun sterilization (杀菌).

To prevent the quits from being misplaced, the dorm-keepers attached a note to each quilt with the dormitory area, bedroom number, and bed number on it.3..

4. .Then, they will be collected to put away after getting fluffy. When it becomes cloudy or it’s likely to rain, we’ll collect all of them in time, about which the students don’t have to worry.” a keeper named Yan Fengjuan said.

The idea occurred to the dorm-keepers when the rooms started to smell during the routine check. 5. .

A.The dorm-keepers collected so many moldy quilts.

B.Their acts of kindness soon received wide praise.

C.Without regular wear, the clothing can grow mold.

D.There is no single quilt that is nowhere to be seen.

E.In this way, it would not cause trouble to the students.

F.The colorful quilts neatly cover the dormitory building.

G.When the sun is good, the quilts will be aired for 3 hours.

When it comes to dog training, I’ve come to understand that some things can be taught quickly, while others take a while. Do you know how I learned that lesson? From a French teacher I had in college.

It was beginner’s French, and from day one she had a “no English” class rule. I was confused by 99% of what she said, but I decided to give it a shot. I was excited as we began learning numbers and the alphabet, something I could easily follow, but when it came to putting together phrases, I was lost.

My teacher came up to me and said “quel est votre passe-temps favori?” which sounded like complete nonsense to me. I knew she was asking me a question, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. So I said “Sorry, I don’t understand.” Well, that broke the “no English” rule, so I just froze because I had no idea as to how to apologize in French.

So what did she do? She kept getting closer to me, repeating ‘quel est votre passe-temps favori?’ over and over, each time a bit louder, as if I had a hearing problem, rather than a complete shortage of comprehension.

I think about that class often. I really did feel hopeless, and the laughter from everyone else in class didn’t help. It’s not that she was a bad teacher. It’s just that she had very little patience for students like me who didn’t catch on immediately.

Well, it taught me to be more patient with Laika when learning new things. And since I don’t want her to be like the embarrassed kid in class, I don’t speak loudly at her or repeat myself when she doesn’t “get it.” I go back and figure out how I can help her understand and put meaning to my requests.

1.How did the author find the “no English” class rule?

A.She was confused and decided not to obey it.

B.She was excited as she could easily follow it.

C.She found it challenging and was eager to break it.

D.She thought it hard but originally was willing to try it.

2.Why couldn’t the author answer her French teacher’s question?

A.Because she didn’t hear the teacher clearly.

B.Because she didn’t know the correct answer.

C.Because she couldn’t understand the question.

D.Because she couldn’t express herself in French.

3.What does the author learn from the experience of the French class?

A.A good teacher should not set strict rules for class.

B.A good teacher should be more patient with students.

C.A good teacher should repeat herself when necessary.

D.A good teacher shouldn’t cause students’ embarrassment.

4.Who is Laika mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.The author’s student. B.The author’s classmate.

C.The author’s pet dog. D.The author’s daughter.

Bumblebees(大黄蜂) are clever: when pollen(花粉) is short and plants near the nest are not yet flowering, they have learned to force them to bloom. Research published on Thursday in Science shows that the insects puncture the plants’ leaves, which causes them to flower about 30 days earlier than they otherwise would. How the technique developed and why the plants react by blooming remain unclear.

Consuelo De Moraes, a chemical ecologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, says she and her teammates were observing one kind of bumblebee in an unrelated experiment when they noticed the insects were damaging plant leaves and wondered why. “At first we thought they might be feeding on the plants,” she says. And because previous research had shown stress could cause plants to flower, they also wondered whether the bees might be creating blooms on purpose.

To find out, the team placed bumblebees together with tomato plants in cages. The bees soon cut several holes in the leaves of each plant. As a test, the researchers tried to copy the bumblebee damage in additional plants with a knife. Both sets of plants with injured leaves bloomed faster, but the ones punctured by the bees flowered weeks earlier, suggesting that chemicals in the insects’ saliva(唾液) may be involved as well.

Next, the researchers moved out of the laboratory to see whether bumblebees would continue to damage nonflowering plants near their nest even if blooming plants were available farther away. They did so. The findings suggest the bees’ behavior is an adaptation that improves food-hunting efficiency(效率).

In the future, scientists could test how the behavior may have developed and how widespread it is among other wild bumblebees, as well as what is happening in plants after a bee bite. Understanding those questions could help us better face the climate change.

1.What does the underlined word “puncture” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.bite B.touch

C.kiss D.eat

2.What inspired Consuelo and her team to do the present research?

A.The stress causing plants to flower. B.The difference in plants’ flowering time.

C.The bumblebees’ feeding on the plants. D.The bumblebees’ damaging plants’ leaves.

3.Why did the researchers copy what the bumblebees did?

A.To prove a knife cut can work as a bee bite.

B.To figure out what helps plants flower faster

C.To find out why bumblebees damage plants.

D.To show bumblebees’ saliva helps plants bloom.

4.What have the researchers made clear?

A.What happens in plants after a bee bite.

B.How bumblebees have learned the technique.

C.Whether bumblebees are clever in finding food.

D.Whether all the bumblebees have learned the skill.

An aquarium(水族馆) that has closed because of the COVID-19 outbreak is asking people to make video calls to the aquarium’s eels(鳗鱼).

The reason? Aquarium workers fear the sensitive creatures may not remember humans’ existence, nor remember that humans do not present a threat. The aquarium has been closed since the start of March. Its sea animals have become used to a largely human free environment during the two-month period of calm. But the aquarium said the situation was having some unexpected effects.

“Creatures in the aquarium don’t see humans except keepers and they have started forgetting about humans,” the aquarium said on its Titter this week, “Garden eels in particular disappear into the sand and hide every time the keepers pass by.” That is causing difficulties for keepers trying to check on the health of the animals. So the aquarium decided to offer an invitation to the public. “Could you show your face to our garden eels from your home?” It is describing the new effort as a “face-showing festival”.

Garden eels are very sensitive by nature. But the 300 garden eels that live in a tank at the aquarium had become used to humans. They rarely hid in the sand from visitors. To try to reintroduce the eels to humans, the aquarium is putting five computers in front of their tank. The public can connect through the Face Time app.

Once the video calls start, people are supposed to show their faces, wave their hands and talk to the eels. But considering the quiet nature of the animals, callers are asked not to shout.

The “face-showing festival” is set to take place Sunday through Tuesday, during Golden Week holiday. It has gotten plenty of support. One Twitter user wrote, “Interesting! When you gaze at the garden eels, they gaze at you. I’m happy to take part.”

1.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 indicate?

A.Garden eels seldom disappear into the sand.

B.Garden eels are checked regularly by the keepers.

C.Humans sometimes present a threat to the aquarium’s animals.

D.Humans almost escape from the memory of the aquarium’s animals.

2.Without seeing visitors for two months, the aquarium’s eels_________.

A.feel excited at the sight of people B.tend to hide themselves from people

C.have health problems to be solved D.mostly remain as sensitive as before

3.What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

A.What to do while making video calls. B.What to do with the eels’ memory.

C.How to connect with the eels online. D.How to show faces during the calls.

4.What can we learn about the “face-showing festival”?

A.It is going to last a whole week. B.Many people approve of the activity.

C.I’ll make no difference to the creatures. D.People can make a call through Twitter.

There are no hard and fast rules that say you must exercise in the morning to reach your weight loss or fitness goals. 1. Here are some tips to keep you active and ready for your nighttime workouts.

Work out Close to the Office

Ideally, you would want to wear your workout clothes under your work clothes to keep you in the mindset all day. But, if your job requires you to wear heels and a skirt or a suit and tie, this might not be reasonable. Instead, bring your workout clothes to work with you and change before you leave the office. 2.

Plan Your Evening Meal

If you are responsible for making dinner in your household, don’t let that be an excuse to skip the gym. This is why slow-cookers were invented. 3. Having a meal waiting at home for you not only takes away the stress of planning a meal when you walk in the door, but it decreases the chances of you blowing your workout.

Choose a Workout for Your Mood

4. Consider something different, maybe the stair climber. Walk around the gym and see what attracts you, forcing yourself to take part in a workout that doesn’t attract your mood will only lead to a waste of your time.

5.

While there are some people who can walk into the gym and just get started most people need a project. Sometime, during the day when you have a moment, make a list of the exercises you hope to accomplish.

A.Plan your workout.

B.Take a special class.

C.There are many benefits for working out at night.

D.Working out at night is a better choice for a lot of people.

E.They were designed to help people manage their time and create healthy meals.

F.The surest way to fail at a workout is to choose something you sincerely hate.

G.Place your gym bag or your clothes where you can see them all day.

Tired of standing in line? Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again.

Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some companies are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using Al-powered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve put in them. Customers pay by entering a credit card, or through an online payment system. When a customer exits the store a green light on the shopping cart shows that their order is complete, and they’re charged.

The companies behind the smart carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it’s much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazom’s Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, co-founder of Caper, believes the technology to run Go is too expensive to use in a large-format grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve have said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said, “We’re always happy when Amazon is doing something. They force retailers to get out of their old school thinking.”

Each time a business uses artificial intelligence and cameras, it raises questions about customers’ privacy and the effect on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his shopping cart point down into the cart, so only a customer’s hand and part of their arm will be captured (拍摄) on camera.

1.What do we know about the smart shopping carts?

A.They are linked to the cameras fixed in the ceilings.

B.They are able to recognize goods put in them.

C.They flash the green light when the order is canceled.

D.They can tell customers where to find what they want.

2.What does Beshry think of the technology used in Amazon’s Go stores?

A.It is far more expensive than their shopping carts.

B.It is likely to help retailers to think differently.

C.It has attracted many more retailers than before.

D.It may reduce the cost of running a store greatly.

3.When it comes to AI and cameras, What makes the public worried most?

A.That somebody may know their privacy.

B.That they can only buy goods online.

C.That goods in the stores may be more expensive.

D.That they behave to wait in a line for a longer time.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.The new technology improves retail sale.

B.Smart shopping carts will let you skip the line.

C.Al-powered cameras are used in retail stores.

D.Artificial intelligence affects the future of job market.

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long term health problems. So, panning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep your legs crossed.

Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.

So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

1.What can we learn about crossing one’s legs?

A.It is a very bad social habit. B.It is usually practiced by design.

C.It can make others feel uncomfortable. D.It has a negative effect on people’s heath.

2.We may conclude from the study that sitting with your legs crossed can ________.

A.improve the function of legs B.help your blood resist gravity

C.effect your blood pressure D.cause health problems instantly

3.According to Richard Graves, repeatedly crossing your legs may ________.

A.paralyze all of your muscles B.preventing you from standing up

C.damage your nerve in the leg in the end D.reduce the pressure on the major nerve

4.What is the main purpose of the text?

A.To blame a bad habit. B.To provide suggestions.

C.To introduce research methods. D.To show effects of an experiment.

While Charlotte Uhlenbroek loves the adventure, she is also glad to be back in “civilization”, at least for the moment.

She’s just finished filming a TV series called Jungle——a 19-week job that involved her exploring the dense jungles of the Congo, the Amazon and Borneo. She says that it was fascinating, but daunting as well. So what was her most challenging experience? “Definitely climbing an 80-metre-high tree in Borneo, when I’m scared of heights! I had to keep going up and up, when a voice inside me was saying, ‘Down! Down!’ I kept thinking the ropes were going to break and send me down below.”

And “down below” was where the bugs were——clinging, stinging, sucking beasts. Apart from the usual mosquitoes, in the Amazon rainforest she was troubled by sand-fly bites. “I’ve had some horrible bites but these really are the itchiest (痒的) bites I’ve ever had. At one stage, I counted 70 bites on one arm,” she says. “Just as annoying were the sweat bees in the Congo. They try to drink the sweat on your face and even the tears from your eyes. The most disgusting thing, though, was try to pull the leches (水蛭) off your skin. The more I pulled, the more they stretched and the tighter their jaws clung to my leg. I kept shouting, ‘Get them off!’ and the film crew kept saying, “Just one minute... this makes a really good shot!”

Back in London, what has she been enjoying since her return to “civilization”? “I’ve been having lots of nice, long showers,” she says. “In the Congo, the possibility of using up our water supplies was always a worrying thought. And I find that when I’ve been in hot, uncomfortable conditions for a while, the things I look forward to more than anything else are being with my family and enjoying my favourite meal.”

1.Why does Charlotte explore the jungles?

A.She enjoys taking adventures.

B.She wants to challenge herself.

C.She takes part in shooting a TV series.

D.She is interested in the jungle bugs.

2.What can we learn about Charlotte’s experience in the jungles?

A.She climbed tall tee with the help of ropes.

B.She once had 70 bites by the sweat bees in the Congo.

C.The mosquito bites were the worst bites she’d ever had.

D.The film crew helped her to get the leches from her leg.

3.What does Charlotte miss most when she was in the jungles?

A.Nice and long showers. B.Her family members.

C.Her comfortable bed. D.Her favourite snacks.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.The TV Series ---- Jungle B.Explore the Amazon Jungle

C.Return to the Age of Civilization D.What a Jungle Journey!

Communication is the sharing of information or ideas. No matter our age or background, it is important to know communication is a valuable skill. It’s also a skill that everyone can learn. Skillful communication can even turn a potential fight into a productive talk.1.

Place yourself on even ground. Make sure not to stand over the other person as you are talking.2.If your listener is sitting, you should sit with them.

Listen to the other party. Let listeners share how they feel and wait until they are finished talking before speaking yourself.

Speak in a calm voice.3. You can try taking deep breaths to calm down.

4.Sometimes a conflict takes time to work itself out. Rather than trying to rush a decision, consider stopping the discussion with a plan to revisit it at a later point.

Use “I” messages. When raising concerns, try to start your sentences with “I...” instead of “You,” stating clearly how you feel about the situation rather than blaming others.5.For instance, instead of saying “You’re messy and it drives me crazy,” you might say, “I’m really uncomfortable surrounded by clutter like this. Is there something we can do to deal with it to keep it from being a problem?”

Good communication is a great tool. Practicing will help you get better at it. Having strong communication skills will improve your relationships. You’ll see a difference at home, at school and anywhere else you go.

A.Speak clearly but simply.

B.Don’t force an agreement.

C.Don’t yell or attack the other person or their behavior or actions.

D.This posture can make people uncomfortable and may even upgrade a conflict.

E.“I messages” improve the chances that listeners will consider your point of view.

F.Whether you mean to or not, disrespecting others will hurt the communication process.

G.There are some steps to take to communicate better when you are in conflict with someone.

Those who work on the “996” model (where employees work from 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week) must envy their counterparts (对应的人)in an American company, because they have a shorter work week. Basecamp, a Chicago-based web application company gives all his employees a short work week: just four days—a total of 32 hours, between May and September every year. Also, they usually work five days a week for the rest of the year.

“That’s plenty of time to get great work done. This is all we expect and all we want from people,” says Jason Fried, a co-founder. “Working 60-plus, or 70-plus hours is unnecessary. In fact, if you have to work 60-plus or 70-plus hours a week, there’s a management problem.”

The company’s summer workload must fit reduced hours, Mr. Fried insists, otherwise the benefits of a shorter week - to recover from work, enjoy time with family and develop outside interests - would be undone.

His new research finds that it is not just long hours that are harmful to employees’ physical and mental health. It is also the intensity (强度)of work. Moreover, it suggests that intensity work harms career prospects (前景).That is because unbearable hours and intensity are in the opposite direction, reducing the quality of the work.

The research concludes that the level of intensity we apply to the work we do is generally “a stronger predictor of unfavorable outcomes than overtime work”. The research compared people of similar jobs and education levels, and found they were more likely to suffer poorer happiness and worse career prospects, including satisfaction, security and promotion, when they worked at an intense level for long periods.

1.What do we know about Basecamp’s four — day work week?

A.It lasts nearly half a year. B.The work pressure is too high.

C.There are some management problems. D.Employees work more than 8 hours a day.

2.What does Mr. Fried intend to say in paragraph 2?

A.Given plenty of time, people can do more.

B.To get work done well needs plenty of time.

C.People can do a job very well in a short work week.

D.A long work week is appropriate for reduced workload.

3.What does the research mentioned in the text want to tell us?

A.Getting much more rest. B.Improving work quality.

C.Refusing a five-day work week. D.Avoiding working too intensely.

4.What can be the best title for this passage?

A.More Work, More Profits B.Shorter Week, Better Reward

C.Less Work, Less Benefits D.Longer Hours, Higher Intensity

If you’re concerned about climate change, should you feel guilty about hanging out online? Maybe not.

Data, or information, is often processed and stored on a computer. A computer that provides data to other computers is called a server. Servers also store data such as videos, pictures and emails. A building that holds many servers is known as a data center. Without data centers and servers, we could not access websites on our own computers and phones every day.

Some people worry that data centers use a lot of energy, which could be bad for the environment. But recent studies found that data centers do not use as much energy as they thought.

Eric Masanet, a professor at Northwestern University, is the study’s main author. Masanet and his team looked at the energy used by data centers around the world, and found that data centers have improved. They saw a 20 percent energy improvement each year.

These improvements are due to better servers. They use less energy than servers once did. Other technologies have also improved.

Masanet said to make sure computers use energy effectively, some things need to happen. Businesses and governments should get involved. Countries need to be open about how much electricity their data centers use. Large data companies also need to source their electricity from renewable energy, such as sunlight and wind. For example, Google and Apple both purchased or generated enough renewable electricity to match 100 percent of their data center energy use in 2018.

“People should care about the energy data centers need,” said Masanet. “But we don’t have to feel bad about staying connected.”

1.Why do people need data centers?

A.To help people reduce time on computers.

B.To store information and let them use websites.

C.To provide energy needed to run people’s phones.

D.To save data on the Internet instead of on servers

2.What caused data centers to have a 20 percent improvement in energy use?

A.Less fuel is being burned in the atmosphere. B.Fewer people are online at the same time.

C.Servers and technologies have improved. D.More information is stored in phones.

3.What does the underlined word “source” in paragraph 6 mean?

A.Measure. B.Store. C.Choose. D.Obtain.

4.According to Eric Masanet, how to make sure computers use energy effectively?

A.Businesses and governments should be involved. B.The boundaries of countries should be opened.

C.People need to spend less time online. D.People need to rely on big data companies.

If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do kind, peaceful things. One of my favorite ways to do this is by developing my own helping actions. These little acts of kindness are opportunities to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be kind and helpful.

We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is beauty of nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter that some people throw out of their windows as they are driving on the rural roads. One of the few shortcomings to live in the mountainous area is that public services, such as litter collection, are less available than those are closer to the city.

A helping action that I practice regularly with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding area. We’ve become so used to doing this that my daughters will often say to me in exciting voices, “There’s some litter, Daddy, stop the car!” And if we have time, we will often pull over and pick it up. It may seem strange, but we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live. He smiled at me and said, “I saw you doing it, and it seemed like a good idea.”

Picking up litter is only one of endless supplies of possible helping actions. You might like holding a door open for people, visiting lonely elderly people in nursing homes, or removing snow off someone else’s driveway. Think of something that seems effortless yet helpful .It’s fun, personally rewarding, and sets a good example. Everyone wins.

1.What does the author think of developing helping actions?

A.It helps us to be winners. B.It is very difficult.

C.It requires lots of effort. D.It makes us feel good about ourselves.

2.What do we know about the area where the author lives?

A.It’s in the center of San Francisco. B.People can see beautiful sceneries here.

C.It’s very easy to find litter collection. D.Few people drive on the rural roads.

3.How does the author support his own opinion?

A.By sharing his own experience. B.By listing reasons for giving help.

C.By explaining different methods to be helpful. D.By making a comparison with others.

4.What does the author mainly want to tell us?

A.Parents are the best teachers to their children. B.Everyone should set good examples to others.

C.Small kind acts make the world a better place. D.Protecting the environment will benefit all of us.

Misha had a two-year-old dog called Gandalf, a search and rescue dog. Misha had trained him for a year with South Carolina Search and Rescue Dog Association.

Misha would train Gandalf whenever she had time. She would give him something like a shoe to smell, then hide it and say to him, “Find, boy!” Hearing this, Gandalf would race off. Soon he would turn up with the very object in his mouth, looking up at her and wagging(摆动)his tail happily. Misha was sure that together, they two would make a brilliant team.

Last Sunday, a 12-year-old boy Michael disappeared from his group's campsite in Doughton Park, 7000 rough acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. A massive search had been launched, but for 3 days there was barely a track of the boy. The rescue teams were about to lose hope when Misha and Gandalf stepped in.

But this was their first real job. Gandalf would have to pick up the missing boy's smell in the air after three days, a challenging task for even the sharpest animal.

Misha gathered her team of six other members, and they headed north. A sister team had been searching the woods through the night. Misha's team would take over later that rainy morning.

All the searchers found were some dropped potato chips west of Michael's campsite. They'd obtained an unwashed T-shirt from Michael's backpack that hadn't been touched by anyone else and handled it with gloves, carefully cutting it into smaller pieces and sealing(密封) them up in plastic bags.

At 8 a.m. Misha's team were briefed on every detail about Michael. Misha carefully studied his picture to lock his image in her mind. She pulled a bright yellow jacket over Gandalf's head. It had large letters on each side saying “RESCUE”, which made Gandalf look like a solider.

Paragraph 1

Then Misha opened a bag containing the pieces of Michael's shirt.

Each year, thousands of U.S. families open their homes and hearts to visitors from all over the world. In a homestay, students can observe, learn and experience a new lifestyle and culture, while practicing English skills in a home environment. Successful homestay experiences can help to ease homesickness for international students.1.

What makes homestays special is the daily experience of living with hosts who arc eager to share their way of life. Homestay hosts will reflect the diversity of the region in which they live. They may be single parents, retired couples or young families.2.What they will have in common is a desire to share their homes and their time with international students.

3.Most homestay hosts will give the student a list of simple house rules to help everyone live happily together. They may give guidelines about Internet usage, lawn(洗衣房), television viewing, meal times, keeping the bedroom and bathroom clean, and money matters.4.For example, at the University of Delaware, all homestay hosts living more than one mile from campus(校园)must provide transportation to and from campus every day of the week. Hosts must also provide each student with a private, furnished room which has a desk, a bed, a closet and enough lighting. Students will have access to a shared or private bathroom as well.

There is no better way to gain special insight into U.S. culture, while improving English language skills, than by participating in a homestay. It's not only important to get high scores in English testing, but to also learn how to get along with people from all over the world.5.

Occasionally, problems arise that cannot be solved. In these cases, the student can ask for another homestay or explore other housing options. The homestay coordinator(协调员)will work closely with the student to ensure that the next homestay will be a good match.

A.Unfortunately, not all homestay matches are perfect.

B.Living in a homestay will always require an adjustment period.

C.They will come from different socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

D.Homestay hosts are expected to provide an English-only speaking environment.

E.Homestays provide students with a well-rounded education and great social skills.

F.Also, they can help students smoothly adapt to the life of an American university.

G.For universities offering homestays, it's important to set standards for licensed hosts.

The outbreak of locusts, an insect that mainly lives in Africa and Asia, is the worst experienced by Kenya in 70 years. The crowds are some three times the size of New York City, eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal grassland and destroying livelihoods in the process.

“These hungry things are alarming,” says Keith Cressman, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's senior locust forecasting officer. "A crowd the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined."

Desert locusts are infamous for their ability to breed(繁育)rapidly in large numbers every three months. And with some help from the wind, they can travel as much as 80 miles a day. Most years, the insects stay in African deserts. However, under the right environmental conditions, they can multiply quickly, spread as much as 400 times every six months and cause extensive destruction if left unchecked.

“The insect has the ability to take advantage of good conditions.” Cressman says.

The "good conditions" the scientist is referring to began in mid-2018 when a rainstorm from the Indian Ocean struck a remote area of the Arabian Peninsula known as the "Empty Quarter". Normally, it would dry out within a short period, killing most of the locust population, which depends on green plants for food. However, in late 2018, a second rainstorm struck the same region. The huge sandy area got wet, which is exactly what desert locusts need to lay their eggs and breed. The extra food supply caused the population to explode for the second time in six months.

Luckily, the locusts, experts say, are easy to control with chemicals. Kenya badly needs equipment and a steady supply of chemicals to effectively wipe out the massive insects. Hopefully, leaders worldwide will recognize the tough situation and contribute generously to control the locust outbreak.

1.What can we infer from what Cressman says in paragraph 2?

A.Little can dull locusts' appetite.

B.Urgent action must be taken against locusts.

C.Overpopulation in big cities leads to food shortages.

D.New York and California should meet challenges together.

2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Locusts' living conditions. B.Locusts' destructive effect.

C.Locusts' daily travel distance. D.Locusts' super reproductive power.

3.For what purpose does the author mention "good conditions"?

A.To explain immediate causes of the locust outbreak.

B.To remind locals to preserve the environment.

C.To analyze how to prevent locust outbreak.

D.To highlight the strength of two rainstorms.

An airline passenger ensured a 20-year-old man was reunited with his lost wallet-along with a little extra something to make up for their time apart.

Hunter Shamatt first lost his wallet while he was on a Frontier Airlines flight from Omaha to attend his sister's wedding in Las Vegas earlier this month. On realizing his wallet was lost, he contacted the airline to see if anyone had turned it inbut to no avail. Since the wallet contained his ID, a signed paycheck, his debit card and $60 in cash, he “feared the worst”.

Shortly after the flight, however, Hunter was shocked to receive a package in the mail from an unknown sender. Inside was his wallet-along with an additional $40 in cash.

“Found this on a Frontier flight from Omaha to Denver-row 12, seat F stuck between the seat and wall,” read a letter in the package. “Thought you might want it hack. All the best. PS: I rounded your cash up to an even $100 so you could celebrate getting your wallet hack. Have fun!”

Hunter's mother, Jeannie, posted a photo of the letter to social media in hopes that they would be able to track down the sender and thank them for their kindness. All they had to go on was that the letter was sent from Applied Underwriters in Omaha and the sender's initials were signed: "T.B".

The Good Man was later identified as Todd Brown, a father-of-five who was delighted at the chance to "have a little fun" with helping out a hard-working stranger. Brown says that he often tries to do good deeds without any recognition, thus why he didn't sign his full name on the letter, but Jeannie later insisted on praising the Nebraska native on social media.

“I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can despite the outcome,” she wrote on Facebook. “This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything”.

1.What does the underlined word "to no avail" in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Under discussion. B.In vain. C.Beyond belief. D.At a loss.

2.Why did Jeannie upload a picture of the letter to social media?

A.To throw light on the truth.

B.To draw attention to Hunter's lost wallet.

C.To find out the sender to express gratefulness.

D.To sing high praise for the sender's generosity.

3.Which of the following best describes Brown?

A.Innocent. B.Warm-hearted. C.Romantic. D.Easy-going.

4.What's the best title for the text?

A.Hunter Shamatt-a Lucky Man B.Young Passenger Reunites with Sister

C.Helping Needy People Is a Great Virtue D.Stranger Returns Lost Wallet with More Cash Inside
