In today's world of smart phones and laptops, most people have at least one time-telling thing with them. Since these digital products are so common, is time running out for the 500-year-old watch? According to some consumers, the answer is yes. New Jersey teenager Charlie Wollman says a watch is “an extra piece of equipment with no necessary function. ” Many young adults think so and use their smart phones to tell time. It is said that fewer young people wear watches today than ten years ago. As a result, some people say that the watch industry is at a crossroads.

However, watchmakers optimistically say that watches redeem(挽回)popularity when consumers reach their 20s and 30s. By then, they are willing to spend money on a quality watch that doesn’t just keep good time. Fifty years ago, watchmakers took pride in their products’ accuracy(精确性). But in recent years, the watch industry has changed itself into an accessory(配饰) business. And today, the image a watch conveys has become more important than the time it tells.

“Complications” — features that go beyond simple timekeeping — are an important part of a watch’s image. Today’s watches offer lots of features that meet almost any personality. These features include compasses, USB drivers, and even other functions that measure the effectiveness of golf swings!

Creativity also plays a key role in designing today’s watches. For example, Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash makes watches that don’t even look like watches. The company’s popular Shinshoku model uses different color lights to tell time. It looks more like a fashionable bracelet than a watch.

Whether a watch conveys fashion sense, creative talent or a love of sports, consumers want their watches to stand out. Nowadays, everyone has the same kind of gadget(小玩意) in their bags, so people want to make a statement with what’s on their wrists. Will this interest in wrist fashion last? Only time will tell!

My first week in the United States was a cultural shock. Everything felt new to me, including the style of conversation, the community I lived in and even the type of food people ate.

In our community back home, people eat mutton and chicken. Pork and beef are also common among other communities, but eating beef is taken as an illegal act. Unlike Nepal, eating beef is common in the West where most of the people follow religions other than Hinduism.

Food is just an example. When people move from one part of the world to another, they should adapt(适应)themselves to the new culture. For example, going to the bars or getting drunk is not acceptable in my community, but it is common in the US after a certain age.

I was raised in a traditional Hindu family in Nepal. We have a conservative(保守的,谨慎的)opinion towards marriage. Arranged marriages(包办婚姻)are common in which families decide whether the two should get married. Free love marriages are not allowed and are seldom seen. Same-sex marriage is also considered impossible.

To me, culture is a matter of habit. The culture is so deep-rooted in people’s minds that most people are against changes. It is always easy for them to do what they have been doing throughout their life. It may be difficult for anyone to adapt to a new culture.

However, with travel being an unavoidable thing for modern people, one always comes across different cultures. In such cases, one should be respectful and adaptive to the culture other people follow. The world is always a better place to live in when we have spaces for people of all cultures.

1.What does the Nepal law forbid people to eat?

A. Pork. B. Beef.

C. Chicken. D. Mutton.

2.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Most westerners believe in Hinduism.

B. Getting drunk in Nepal is acceptable.

C. Anyone can enter the bars in the US.

D. The writer came across a cultural shock.

3.Which may be seen most in Nepal?

A. Open marriages. B. Free love marriages.

C. Same-sex marriage. D. Arranged marriages.

4.What is the writer’s attitude to different cultures?

A. Negative. B. Respectful.

C. Conservative. D. Indifferent.

With these tips you can finally get a solid night's sleep.

Reserve Your Bed

Get into bed just for sleeping. Avoid working, paying bills, reading, or watching television in bed. If you associate your bed only with sleep, you’ll be more likely to fall asleep.

Watch the Caffeine(咖啡因)

Too much caffeine throughout the day can cause interrupted sleep. Limit yourself to two cups of tea, coffee, or cola, taken at least 6 hours before bedtime.

Tap the Exercise Answer

In a study from Stanford University School of Medicine, a group of 50- to 76-year-olds who had complained of sleep problems began proper exercise for about half an hour four times a week. Compared with a similar group of people who didn’t exercise, the more active group slept an average of one hour more each night, took less time to fall asleep.

Take a Bath

Take a warm bath an hour or two before bed. Your body temperature will slowly drop after you get out of the tub(浴盆), making you feel tired. Don’t bathe right before bed, however, because it can briefly stimulate you enough to make it hard to fall asleep.

Buy the Right Bed

A bed that’s too soft can cause poor sleep. Replace your mattress(床垫)if it’s more than ten years old, and buy one that’s as firm as you can tolerate but still comfortable.

If 30 minutes go by and you haven’t fallen asleep, don’t lie in bed feeling frustrated. Get up and do something relaxing.

1.Which of the following is the best choice if one wants to have a good sleep?

A. Drinking as much coffee as possible.

B. Taking a warm bath an hour or two before bed.

C. Watching TV in bed before going to sleep.

D. Buying a beautiful and soft bed.

2.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph?

A. excited B. tired

C. interested D. encouraged

3.What is the best title for the passage?

Last summer, I got a part-time job like a waiter. I worked hardly and was very helpful. Everyone in the restaurant including some regular customer liked me. One day, a foreign couple, which were in their fifties, entered the restaurant. I was happy to have a chance to practice my spoken English. I went up to greet them warmly. After I took their order, I told them their food will be served quickly because us Chinese respect the elderly. Hearing my words, a look of displeasure was appeared on the wife’s face. Seen my confused look, her husband explained to me the westerners disliked the description “old”. I made a apology to them, keeping in mind the lesson cultural differences should never be ignored (忽视).

How to Avoid Weight Gain Over Holidays

Do you love the holidays, but hate the pounds that follow? You are not alone. Holidays are times for feasting and celebrating. Many people are worried about their weight. 1. Whether you are celebrating at the office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as a time for tasting a variety of foods. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy.

Here are some tips for preventing weight gain and maintaining physical fitness:

Don’t skip meals.

Before you leave home, have a small, low-fat meal or snack. 2.

Control portions.

Use a small plate (about 10 inches) and put aside the large ones that may encourage you to “load up.”  3. Once you have your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining table. Doing so will make it less tempting (吸引人的) to be eating constantly as your appetite is inspired by the sight of food.

Begin with soup and fruit or vegetables.

Fill up beforehand with water-based soup and raw fruit or vegetables. Or drink a large glass of water before you eat to help you feel full.

Stick to physical activity.

4. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off additional calories.

5.

Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a large amount of fat. Choose lean meats. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. Use lemon juice instead of dessert or butter.

A. This may help to avoid getting too excited before delicious food.

B. You had better turn your attention away from delicious foods.

C. With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays.

D. You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the size of your fist.

E. Avoid high-fat foods.

F. Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays.

G. You’d better remember the Dos and Don’ts for keeping fit and slim.

Recently, the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED, added about 1,000 words and new definitions to its website. The changes are to help users understand a mix of terms, some dating back many centuries. The additions include words such as “brencheese”, “deathshildy” and “hip-pop”.

The new entries are part of the company’s update to oed.com, its searchable online dictionary for paid members. The OED makes changes to the website four times each year. But the latest print version has been in process since the year 2000, and may not be ready for 10 more years. That information comes from Katherine Connor Martin, who heads the company’s dictionary operations in the United States.

Usually, the OED watches usage of a word for at least 10 years before deciding whether to add a new entry, new definition or word related to an existing entry, she said. This general rule, however, is sometimes not followed. That is what happened with “tweet”, a word that the OED added far before the 10-year mark. Other times, the company adds words that are very old, but were not included in the dictionary in the past.

“It’s funny because we talk about new words, but many of the words we add are already obsolete. It’s just that they were never in the dictionary before,” Martin told the Associated Press.

That is the reality, she said, of a historical dictionary trying to put more than 1,000 years of English into books that already have over 855,000 entries. So, you get “brencheese”, a rarely used term for when bread and cheese are eaten together. The word dates back to the year 1665. The word “deathshildy” is from Old English. It means someone who is guilty of a serious crime and condemned to death.

The website defines the term “hip-pop” for music that combines parts of hip-hop and popular music. The OED discovered the term “hip-hip pop” was used in a 1985 story from a Pennsylvania newspaper. It noted that the term “hip-pop” appeared in a 1991 U. S. newspaper report about the rap artist M.C. Hammer.

The website has added several other terms related to modern culture. They include three popular terms: “binge-watching”, “spoiler alert” and “microaggression”.

Here are a few other new entries if you long to read on.

1.What has the OED done recently?

A. It has made changes to its words’ explanations.

B. It has sorted out some words which are out of date.

C. It has helped users to have more convenient use of the OED.

D. It has taken in more words and new meanings of some words.

2.The underlined word “obsolete” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to __________.

A. deserted B. updated

C. changed D. explained

3.What will the paragraph following the passage most probably be about?

A. The influence cultures have on the words in the OED.

B. The difficulties the OED has in choosing the words.

C. The effect modern technology has on the OED.

D. The new vocabularies the OED has included.

4.What’s the best title of the text?

A. The OED, a Great Help for English Learners

B. A Brand New Version of the OED Website

C. A Better Understanding of Words in the OED

D. Examples of the OED Choosing Words

The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important. Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearance, attitude and manners.

A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. A smile shows a confident and positive attitude.

When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake. Others don't.

Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sit, walk, gesture, use your voice and show feelings on your face is all part of your body language. It makes the interviewer know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in. Are you feeling positively about yourself? Your abilities? Your interest in the job?

Speak clearly and loudly enough. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. When you speak, look at the interviewer. Also, don't say negative things about yourself, or former employer.

Listen to questions carefully. If you don't understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain:

"I'm sorry, but I didn't catch that. "

"I'm not sure exactly what you mean. "

Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. They don't expect you to be totally calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job.

At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.

It's a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview, or deliver it by hand.

Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week. Ask if they have made a decision about the job.

Good luck!

Fourth-grade teacher Tori Nelson allowed one of her students to shave her head in the schoolyard,  after bullies(仗势欺人者) teased him about his own buzz cut. Ms. Nelson got the idea after noticing that Matthew Finney, a shy boy from her homeroom at Winlock Miller Elementary School in Washington State, was standing outside his classroom crying and wearing a winter hat.

Ms. Nelson could see the back of his neck had been shaved, and since Matthew usually had very thick curly brown hair, she realized that he'd had a haircut over the weekend. She asked him what was wrong and he said he'd gotten a buzz cut for the summer. But this morning, a fifth grader on the bus made fun of him, and he didn't want to come to class and get laughed at by other kids. Ms. Nelson tried to convince Matthew to come inside, but since school rules banned kids from wearing hats indoors he refused—explaining that he was afraid of showing his haircut to the other children in case they also made fun of him.

"Finally I said, ‘ If you take your hat off and come to class, I'll let you give me a buzz cut too, " Ms. Nelson told Yahoo Parenting. "I figured it's just hair, and mine is already short anyway. I might as well get it shorter in time for the warm weather.

Matthew excitedly took her up on the offer, and Ms Nelson and another teacher gathered all the fourth graders together during break time. A school employee brought in scissors, which Matthew used to the cheers of his classmates, excitedly watching as their teacher's hair fell away onto the ground in the schoolyard.

"It was a lot of fun for the kids, and it helped Matthew feel better about himself. " said Ms Nelson. " You have to do what it takes to reach children. Teaching isn't just about reading and writing: it's about self-worth and accepting differences.

The morning of March 2, 2012, was a busy one for the students in Mrs. Goodknight’s class in Henryville, Indiana. There was morning meeting with poems to read, jokes to share, and tests to prepare for. “It was just an ordinary day,” says student Lyric Darling, 12.

At noon, while students played basketball under a sunny sky, a huge tornado (龙卷风) was forming 50 miles away. Around 2:25 p.m., 20 minutes before school was supposed to let out, a huge tornado touched down in Fredericksburg, 20 miles away. As word spread, parents rushed to the school. Teachers rushed to get kids onto buses or into waiting cars. By 2:45, the skies were darkening.

“I was crying,” says Lyric. “All around me, kids were crying.” Two buses returned to the school with students whose parents had not been home. Teachers brought the kids to the office, where they all took cover under desks. Suddenly the power went out. And then the tornado attacked the school, filled with wood and trees and glass. The tornado was over the school for less than one minute. In that time, it almost completely destroyed the school. Teachers were about to lead the group out of the office when a second tornado was upon them. When it finally ended, the group made its way out of the building.

Over the next few hours, parents arrived, overjoyed to find their children. The next day, it was clear: All of Henryville’s people were safe.

There were so many sad and frightening stories. Some students saw the tornado with their own eyes. Some lost their homes. But many described how the community (社区) came together to help and support each other. “You learn what’s important,” Mrs. Goodknight says.

1.When did the tornado hit the school?

A. In the morning. B. At noon.

C. Around 2:25. D. After 2:45.

2.What did the teachers do in the face of the tornado?

A. They asked all the students to take cover under desks.

B. They told parents to wait for their kids at home.

C. They sent all the students to their homes.

D. They helped the students get on buses.

3.We can learn from the text that the tornado _____.

A. got many students killed B. caused great damage to the school

C. lasted for a few minutes D. made the community feel hopeless

One day, a patient came to see me. He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux (胃酸倒流), a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans, a marked increase in recent years. Reflux can lead to esophageal (食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s. The drugs we use to treat reflux don't always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term.

What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one, our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked: dinnertime. Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients' evening meals has become later and later. Dinner — already pushed back by longer work hours — is often further delayed (推迟) by activities such as shopping and exercise.

In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating. A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too. Her nightly routine (常规) included a 9 p.m. dinner with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed.

She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year. “For the first two months, I just hated you,” she told me, “and for the next two months, I was having some trouble eating. I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer.” Then she added, “You know, we're the reason that it's not so easy to get 6 p.m. reservations (预约) at the good restaurants anymore.”

To stop the increase in reflux disease, we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed. As for my waiter patient? I told him to eat dinner before 7 p.m. Within six weeks, his reflux was gone.

1.The disease the waiter caught is _____.

A. on the rise B. easy to control

C. unusual in America D. the most dangerous cancer

2.What does the underlined word “overlooked” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Talked about a lot. B. Paid no attention to.

C. Carefully looked into. D. Taken into consideration.

3.Why did the woman patient hate the author?

A. He spoke of her dead father and uncle.

B. He asked her to change her eating habits.

C. He couldn't find a way to deal with her problem.

D. He couldn't make her healthy again within a year.

4.The author writes the text to tell us _____.

A. not to work late at night B. to avoid eating at restaurants

C. unhealthy foods cause cancer D. the danger of eating late at night

Can you remember the day when you spoke your first word? If you can, you are unusual. Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grew older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously (好奇). You began to know that people made certain sounds to go with certain things.

Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right sound for one thing. On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things, can they understand each other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE.

After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words meant things, such as BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words meant doing things, such as GO and SWIM, and other words describe things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learned to put words together to express your idea, such as “I want to go out and play with my friends.” This is language. By means of language people can communicate. So we say languages are means of communication.

1._________ can remember the day when __________.

A. One, he spoke his first word

B. No one, he spoke his first word

C. Most people, they spoke their first words

D. None, they spoke their first words

2.The secret of language is that__________.           .

A. one sound might be as good as another

B. people can understand each other

C. a certain sound is for a certain thing

D. there is a special sound for each person

3.You could learn words________.

A. before you knew what the language was

B. after you knew what the language was

C. before you knew the secret of the language

D. when you were a baby

4.The aim in using language is ________.

A. to get everything one wants from others

B. to say what one wants to know

C. to share ideas, opinions, news, etc with one another

D. to make oneself understood by others

Public Speaking

Public speaking can be defined as the act of making a speech in front of a group of listeners.

The types of public speaking are deliberately structured with three general purposes: to inform, to persuade and to entertain. An informative speech has a purpose to inform, or give knowledge to its audience. 1.For persuasive speech, the speaker would try to change the mindset, perception, or behavior of the audience for their own good. Thus, the speaker needs to look for common ground with the audience and try to relate to what they might agree on. The last type is a ceremonial speech. It tends to be less formal and more personal than the other types of speeches. No matter how well you know the person you are giving speech about, try not to say bad things about them, even if it is meant to be a joke.

2.Sparing some time to practice will help build confidence and help determine how long the presentation will last. Aside from it, knowing who the audience will be is quite necessary. Try to get as much information as possible regarding this particular area related to the audience. Knowing the “battlefield” in advance will give the speakers a huge advantage.

Language is the main aspect a speaker needs to pay attention to while giving a speech.

3.A speaker needs to choose their words carefully and make it clear to the audience what they mean. Often, when given a speech, the audience look up to the speaker to give them something new and useful.  4.Language and delivery alone will not be sufficient if the speaker does not have the body language. The movement and gesture of a speaker also affect the audience. While closing the speech or presentation, speakers can restate their main points, just to remind the audience of the important things that have been said. 5.

A. It needs to be used clearly.

B. These speeches mark special occasions.

C. The important thing to watch about is not to put in too much information.

D. The key of perfecting anything is through practice, including public speaking.

E. They can also end it with a special message and encourage the audience to ask questions.

F. Knowing how public speaking is done is a key part in understanding the importance of it.

G. Thus, the speaker needs to know how to deliver their speech to fulfill the audience‟s expectation.

Bullying(霸凌) can take a variety of forms, from the verbal to the physical as well as indirect forms, such as being excluded from social groups. Bullying is clearly unpleasant, and can make the child experiencing it feel unworthy and depressed. In extreme cases it can even lead to suicide, though this is thankfully rare.

Until recently, not much was known about the topic, and little help was available to teachers to deal with bullying. Perhaps as a consequence, schools would often deny  the problem. „There is no bullying at this school‟ has been a common answer if asked, almost certainly untrue. Fortunately more schools are now saying: “There is not much bullying here, but when it occurs we have a clear policy for dealing with it.” Three factors are involved in this change. First is an awareness of the severity of the problem. Second, a number of resources to help tackle bullying have become available in Britain. For example, the Scottish Council for Research in Education produced a package of materials, Action Against Bullying, circulated to all schools in England and Wales as well as in Scotland. In Ireland, Guidelines on Countering Bullying Behaviour in Post-Primary Schools was published, too. Third, there is evidence that these materials work, and that schools can achieve something.

Evidence suggests that a key step is to develop a policy on bullying, saying clearly what bullying means, and giving explicit guidelines on what will be done if it occurs, what records will be kept, who will be informed and what punishments will be employed. The policy should be developed through consultation over a period of time. Pupils, parents and staff should feel they have been involved in the policy. Other actions can be taken to back up the policy. There are ways of dealing with the topic through the curriculum, using video, drama and literature. But curriculum work alone may only have short-term effects; it should be an addition to policy work. There are also ways of working with individual pupils, or in small groups. Work in the playground is important, too. One helpful step is to train lunchtime supervisors to distinguish bullying from playful fighting, and help them break up conflicts. Another possibility is to improve the playground environment, so that pupils are less likely to be led into bullying from boredom or frustration.

With these developments, schools can expect that at least the most serious kinds of bullying can largely be prevented. The more effort is put in and the wider the whole school is involved, the more substantial the results are likely to be. The reduction in bullying and the consequent improvement in pupil happiness is surely a worthwhile objective.

1.The writer thinks that the response „There is no bullying at this school‟ shows .

A. bullying can be easily dealt with

B. bullying doesn‟t exist in the school

C. the school knows nothing about bullying

D. the school lacks the knowledge and resources about bullying

2.From paragraph 2, we can learn that .

A. reasons for the increased rate of bullying are clear

B. in the previous years, British government policy failed

C. developments in dealing with bullying have led to a solution

D. there is no research into how common bullying is in British schools

3.According to the passage, what is the most important part of reducing bullying?

A. Develop a policy through consultation.

B. Deal with the topic through the curriculum.

C. Work with individual pupils or in small groups.

D. Give detailed guidelines on the right things to do.

4.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?

A. Bullying: what parents can do

B. Bullying: are the schools to blame?

C. Bullying: the link with academic failure

D. Bullying: from no way out to prevention

Eco-Resort Management

Ecotourism is often regarded as a form of nature-based tourism and has become an important alternative source of tourists. In addition to providing the traditional resort-leisure product, it has been argued that ecotourism resort(度假村) management should have a particular focus on best-practice environmental management. Couran Cove Resort is such a tourist attraction located on South Stradbroke Island, Australia.

Sustainable(可持续的) Practices of Couran Cove Resort

South Stradbroke Island is separated from the mainland by the Broadwater, which is home to a wide range of plant communities. Located on the offshore island, the Resort is only accessible by means of water transportation. It provides hourly ferry service from the harbour on the mainland to and from the island. Within the Resort, transport modes include walking trails, bicycle tracks and the beach train. The reception area is the counter of the shop which has not changed in 8 years at least. The accommodation is an octagonal(八角形的) building. These are large rooms that are clean but the equipment is old and in some cases just working. The ceiling fan only works at high speed for example. Beds are hard but clean. There is a television, a radio, an old air conditioner and a small fridge in each room.

As an ecotourism-based resort, most of the planning and development of the attraction has been concentrated on the need to co-exist with the natural environment of South Stradbroke Island to achieve sustainable development.

Water and Energy Management

There is groundwater at the centre of the island, which has a maximum height of 3 metres above sea level. The water supply is recharged by rainfall and is commonly known as an freshwater aquifer(含水层). Couran Cove Island Resort obtains its water supply by tapping into this aquifer and collecting it through a pipe. In order to narrow the water uses, all laundry activities are carried out on the mainland. The Resort uses LPG power station rather than a fuel oil  station  for  its  energy  supply,  supplemented(补充)  by wind  power,  which  has  reduced greenhouse emissions by 70%. Hot water in the eco-cabins and for some of the Resort‟s vehicles is solar-powered. Water efficient fittings are also installed in showers and toilets. Visitors who stay at the Resort are encouraged to monitor their water and energy usage by an in-house television system, and are rewarded with prizes (such as a free return trip to the Resort) accordingly if their usage level is low.

Evaluation

In three years of operation, Couran Cove Island Resort has won 23 international and national awards. It has effectively implemented contemporary environmental management practices. However, the Resort‟s growth will eventually be limited by its carrying capacity, and quantity control should be incorporated in the management strategy of the Resort.

1.In order to achieve sustainable development, the Resort .

A. cancels the transportation service

B. researches into plant communities

C. provides high quality accommodation

D. operates in harmony with its natural surroundings

2.What is applied for heating water on Couran Cove Island Resort?

A. The LPG power. B. The petro power.

C. The solar power. D. The wind power.

3.According to the study, in the future what should the Resort focus on?

A. Increasing the supply of fresh water.

B. Meeting the need of international guests.

C. Improving the tourism entertainment projects.

D. Limiting the number of the guests to the Resort.

4.From the passage we can know that Couran Cove Island Resort .

A. suffers huge loss in natural resources

B. achieves success in eco-resort management

C. sets a good example for profit-making business

D. raises standards in guest-monitoring management

The True Story of a Young Man

When Reginald Lindsay received a scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1967, what he wanted most was not a job with a good salary, but a chance to be a member of Congress as a southern representative. After earning his degree at Harvard Law School in 1970, he returned to the South to practice law among the poor. “I want to help them understand what their rights are and to help them achieve them,” he said. Then he ran for political office at the local and state level until he was ready to try for Congress.

Reg grew up in a low-income Negro section of Birmingham, Alabama. Brought up by his grandparents after his parents were divorced while he was very young, Reg had been living through a period of far-reaching progress in race relations. In the summer of 1968 Reg himself became a good example of this progress when he became the first Negro student appointed to a special new program. The program introduced bright young students to the workings of the Georgia State government and encouraged them to seek employment there after finishing their education. “I‟ve been lucky,” he said. “I seem to have been in the right place at the right time.”

But luck was only part of Reg‟s story, for he made the most of opportunities that came his way. He learned to read in kindergarten and began visiting the public library regularly to borrow books. His grandparents encouraged him, though neither of them had much education, and they bought him a set of encyclopedias. “I loved those books,” he remembered. “I used to come downstairs before breakfast and read short articles. I enjoyed reading about famous men, and then I would pretend to be one of them. I guess it was partly a childish game and partly an escape. It wasn‟t too much fun to be a Negro when I was a kid.” While studying for his bachelor‟s degree at Morehouse College, Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a “B” average while majoring in political science.

With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship, Reg made a good start on his professional career. He said, “The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service.” Then in 1975 he was the Massachusetts state commissioner of public utilities and from 1993 to 2009 he was judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

1.After earning his degree from Harvard Law School, Reginald planned to .

A. return to his hometown to find a job with a good salary

B. go back to the South to help the poor understand their rights

C. run for local office to make progress on the civil rights movement

D. try for Congress by encouraging the poor to join an education program

2.In what way did Reginald‟s grandparents encourage him to read?

A. They sent him to kindergarten.

B. They led him to public library.

C. They bought him encyclopedias.

D. They borrowed many books for him.

3.Which of the following words can best describe Reginald?

A. Enthusiastic and careful. B. Cooperative and modest.

C. Ambitious and hardworking. D. Courageous and generous.
