Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy (哲学). Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly. Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on. At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized (批评) by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his love of rhythm (韵律). John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based (叙事体的) and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821. 1.John Keats’ attitude towards life changed because of . A.his early education from school B.the deaths of his parents C.Edmund Spenser’s poetry D.the criticism of a magazine 2.What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother? A.They read many books. B.They had a bad childhood. C.They died of the same disease. D.They showed strong interest in poetry. 3.While trying to achieve his dream of becoming a poet first, John Keats was . A.determined B.experienced C.knowledgeable D.impatient 4.What do we know from the passage? A.Keats received little education at school. B.Endymion was about a real love story. C.In 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem. D.Keats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.

A grateful heart is a satisfied heart. A satisfied heart is a simple heart which leads to a simplified life. Gratitude opens the door to simplicity. But we live in a culture that addresses dissatisfaction. 1. Intentionally choose it. Gratitude will never be a result of your next purchase, success, or accomplishment. 2.And you will never find it in life until you intentionally decide to choose it. Count your blessings. A new day, a warm bed, a unique personality, or a special talent.... 3. Gratitude quickly sets in when we begin to spend a quiet moment each day remembering them. This practice alone has the potential to change your heart and life immeasurably. 4. Almost hall the world live on less than $ 2. 50 a day. 1. 1 billion people have inadequate access to clean water. Let those facts sink in for just a moment and slowly allow gratitude and a desire to become part of the solution to take their place. Find gratitude in difficulty. 5. It can be more difficult during the trials of life: death, disease, or failure. The truth is that no one is exempt(豁免)from the sufferings. However good can be found even in the worst of times. Being grateful during those difficulties may get you through them. In daily life we must see it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. A.Ignore what you don't have. B.We can learn how to be grateful. C.Open your eyes to those with less. D.Gratitude is available in your heart right now. E.You have wonderful things in your life already. F.It's easy to be grateful when things are going well. G.How can we find gratitude in a world that seeks to destroy it?
This morning we're going to head off down into the wetland, into a very specific kind of wetland called the Prairie fen. You can find Nate Fuller counting butterflies. The Sarett Nature Center needs an accurate count of Mitchell's satyr butterflies to help preserve one of their last known habitats. They're very particular about the kind of habitat where they can live, which is part of what makes them so rare and amazing indicators for our water quality. Today, Sarett expert Ashley Cole-Wick with Michigan's Natural Features Inventory helps Fuller count. She says "When I first started working on the butterfly in 2013, we had 18 populations and this year in 2019, we have 10." The Mitchell Seder went on the endangered species list in 1991. Initially it was thought that loss of wetlands contributed to their decline. Fuller says "It's not just habitat availability. Its groundwater and the amount in the quality of groundwater coming into these wetlands seem to be a challenge for the butterfly. Nothing has all been sorted out exactly. ” While the decline is likely a combination of factors. the fact that water quality might contribute is alarming because the wetlands are the headwaters for the Midwest's rivers and streams. A captive breeding (人工繁殖)program was started four years ago at the Toledo Zoo to help get to the bottom of the mystery. Today Director Ryan Walsh who heads the program says it's been, the only successful captive program. The caterpillars (毛毛虫)spend the winter in a special weather control room that help determine the Mitchell satyrs don't do well below 4. 4 degrees Celsius, a temperature that prevents the Fen wetlands from the hard freezes which kill the insects. With that knowledge, the program produced 1300 new eggs this summer, a development that may go a long way toward restoring the population. And if all goes well, may one day the Mitchell satyr butterfly earn a ticket off Endangered Species List. 1.What are the indicators for the water quality? A.The habitats. B.The butterflies. C.The wetlands. D.The experts. 2.What is the main idea of the third paragraph? A.The importance of water quality. B.Actions taken to protect the butterflies. C.The reasons why the butterflies decline. D.The natural conditions for the butterflies. 3.What does the underlined word "restoring" in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A.Preserving. B.Increasing. C.Recovering. D.Controlling. 4.What can we learn about the butterfly? A.It can easily be found. B.It is not endangered now. C.It will die above 4. 4 degree Celsius. D.It can be bred by humans.
"Ma uka, ma uka ka ua , Ma kai, ma kai ka ua." So sing the children at a kindergarten on the Island of Hawaii. The song is much like "Rain, rain, go away” nursery rhyme, but it has an unusual power: it is one of the tools that have revived a near-dead language. The decline of Hawaiian was not, as is the case with most disappearing languages, a natural death caused by migration(迁徙)and mass media. In 1896, after American business interests ended the Hawaiian original political system, schools were banned from using it. By the late 20th century, apart from a couple of hundred people on one tiny island, English had replaced Hawaiian and only the old spoke it to each other. The civil-rights movement brought a revival of interest among the young, centred on the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Larry Kimura, a professor there, was not satisfied that the language should be only a subject at college: he and his students wanted to bring it back to life. The idea for how to do that came from a visiting Maori, who suggested. “language nests", which had successfully revived New Zealand's native language. In 1985, when educating children in Hawaiian was still banned, Kauanoe Kamana and her husband Pila Wilson, both students of Kimura's, created the first Language nest" at Hilo. Neither was a native speaker, but both were determined, to bring up their children, as such. They gathered a small group of children, including their own son and daughter, and elderly native speakers. The movement grew: there are now 12 kindergartens and 23 schools involved. The number of children being educated in Hawaiian has risen from 1, 877 in 2008 to 3.028 in 2018. Along with Japanese, Hawaiian is the non-English language most commonly spoken among children. 1.What makes the decline of Hawaiian different from other disappearing languages? A.The number of its users. B.The language features it bears. C.People's unwillingness to use it. D.The unfair treatment it received. 2.What has been done to save Hawaiian? A.More schools have been set up. B.More people are persuaded to stay. C.More children are exposed to Hawaiian. D.Government promotes the use of Hawaiian. 3.How does the author feel about the present situation of Hawaiian? A.Relieved. B.Curious. C.Anxious. D.Doubtful. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.The Revival of Hawaiian B.The Future of Hawaiian. C.The History of Hawaiian D.The Development of Hawaiian
Han Tianheng picked up a carving knife at the age of 6 and never put it down. Today, the 79 year-old artist, one of China's most respected living masters of seal carving(印章雕刻), calligraphy and Chinese painting, still remembers the incident the first time he held a knife in his hand. “I cut my thumb badly and was horrified by the bloody sight," he said, adding that his mother applied ashes because she couldn't afford to take him to a hospital. "The cut left a scar, which is still clear today." An eye for an eye and blood for blood, the incident didn't set him back. Instead, it aroused his passion for the ancient art form. He was determined to pursue a path that would lead to a career in seal carving. Han said. The journey of art exploration was a little bumpy for the young man in his quest for excellence, and his seal works were harshly criticized by a famous old painter. Most would have crumbled under the criticism, not Han. It made him even more determined. After six months' hard work, he visited the painter again. "This time, he asked me to carve a seal for him. This was positive affirmation," Han said. "Praise and criticism are what an artist should learn to handle all his life. Praise is candy and criticism is medicine. We can live without candy, but cannot live without medicine when ill." Han rose to fame during the early 1960s famous for bird and insect seal art. Han's seals are an essential ending part on the paintings of a long list of well-established artists. “A seal for a good painting is. like the buttons for an haute couture(高档女子时装).An experienced tailor always knows how to choose buttons that matches the whole style," Han said His seals are full of variety — grand and solemn for Liu Haisu's paintings, light and vivid for Lu Yanshao's, graceful and gentle for Xie Zhiliu's. "A good seal carver should keep bis own style, and at the same time go well with the painting's style." he said. 1.What influence did the incident have on Han when he was six? A.He got injured very seriously. B.He learned how to use a knife. C.It aroused his interest in seal carving. D.It helped him learn how hard life was. 2.Which best describes Han's journey of art exploration? A.Smooth and fruitful. B.Inspiring and lucky. C.Boring but worthwhile. D.Tough but rewarding. 3.In Han's opinion, what do an experienced tailor and a good seal carver share? A.The huge respect they earn. B.The flexibility they display at work. C.The targeted customers they serve. D.The efforts they have to make to succeed. 4.In which section, of a newspaper does this text most probably appear? A.Education. B.Events. C.Entertainment. D.People.

Reasons You Might Not Be Able to Donate Blood Donating blood is a generous — not to mention necessary — act, but there are several restrictions on giving that protect you and future recipients of your gift The medications you're taking Most medications won’t disqualify you from being able to donate blood. 1.. If you're taking an antibiotic for an infection, you may be asked to wait until you're healthy again; if you're taking aspirin and donating platelets, you must wait two full days after taking aspirin or any medication containing aspirin before donating, You’ve tested positive for hepatitis or HIV 2., you cannot donate if you’ve tested positive for either condition. Because some types of hepatitis may not be treatable and can lead to fatal health problems, such as liver failure and liver cancer, it is too risky to donate blood if you have these diseases. 3. If you weigh less than 110 pounds, you're not eligible to donate blood. Underweight individuals tend to have low blood volumes and therefore may not tolerate the removal of the required volume of blood. Your iron levels are too low or too high Having low iron — less than 12.5g/dL for women and 13.0g/dL for men — will disqualify you from donating. For this reason, frequent donors, especially women, are encouraged to take iron supplements and eat iron-rich foods to keep their levels in the normal range. 4.. You recently got a piercing or electrolysis 5., if you've recently gotten an ear or body piercing or electrolysis with a reusable gun or reusable instrument. Before you get a piercing or electrolysis, he recommends doing your research on whether the place employs single-use equipment. A.Having levels that are too high will also disqualify you from blood donation B.High blood iron levels increase the risk of diseases C.But some may require a waiting period after your final dose D.Since HIV and hepatitis can be transmitted through blood E.You're underweight F.When you go donate, make sure you have an updated medication list with you G.You'll have to wait three months before you can give blood
Online programs to fight depression are already commercially available. While they sound efficient and cost-saving, a recent study reports that they're not effective, primarily because depressed patients are not likely to engage with them or stick with them. The study looked at computer-assisted cognitive (认知的) behavioral therapy (CBT) and found that it was no more effective in treating depression than the usual care patients receive from a primary care doctor. Traditional CBT is considered an effective form of talk therapy for depression, helping people challenge negative thoughts and change the way they think in order to change their mood and behaviors. However, online CBT programs have been gaining popularity, with the attraction of providing low-cost help wherever someone has access to a computer. A team of researchers from the University of York conducted a randomized (随机的) control trial with 691 depressed patients from 83 physician practices across England. The patients were split into three groups: one group received only usual care from a physician while the other two groups received usual care from a physician plus one of two computerized CBT programs. Participants were balanced across the three groups for age, sex, educational background, severity and duration of depression, and use of antidepressants(抗抑郁药). After four months, the patients using the computerized CBT programs had no improvement in depression levels over the patients who were only getting usual care from their doctors. "It's an important, warning note that we shouldn't get too carried away with the idea that a computer system can replace doctors and therapists," says Christopher Dowrick, a professor of primary medical care at the University of Liverpool. "We do still need the human touch or the human interaction, particularly when people are depressed. " "Being depressed can mean feeling lost in your own small, negative, dark world," Dowrick says. Having a person, instead of a computer, reach out to you is particularly important in fighting that sense of isolation. Facebook lets friends connect. They can give each other updates, share photos and post comments. But that’s not all. Facebook might also stress users out. In a new study, 88 volunteers how much time they spent on Facebook and the types of Facebook posts and comments that they made. In addition, they answered questions about their feelings and state of mind. They also offered saliva. Researchers tested it for cortisol. This chemical is a stress hormone. Levels of it vary throughout the day. In this study, people with the most Facebook friends, more than 300, had somewhat higher cortisol levels. Additionally, the more Facebook friends that users had, the more likely they were to feel anxious. On the other hand, youths who gave lots of ''likes'' and supportive comments on Facebook had lower cortisol levels. ''The more social support you give to others, the lower your stress hormone levels will be, '' says Lupien. ''This research decidedly combines the social science approach and the medical science approach on an important question in our social-media age, '' says Wenhong Chen, a sociologist at the University of Texas at Austin. ''It's ready pleasantly new to see Lupien’s team study cortisol levels-along with questionnaire data. '' One finding from Lupien's work surprised Chen. Teens who felt they got a lot of support from others also had higher cortisol levels. Usually, she says, those feelings should protect people from stress. ''There are many potential dangers of social media use among young people, '' Chen notes. So, she says, enjoy Facebook, but be aware of the risks. Lupien suggests that teen Facebook users share information with and support their friends on the site. They shouldn’t just stay silent. ''if anyone is more stressed, it's the watchers, not the sharers, '' she says. Also, she recommends that people who use social media heavily should find time to take active walks, to run or to do other activities. Cortisol increases a person's energy. “The best way to reduce stress hormones is to use the energy, '' she says. 1.Paragraph 2 shows us the ________. A.research proposes B.research methods C.research contents D.research results 2.What should we do if we want to feel less stressed? A.Share as many nine photos as possible. B.Give more positive comments to others. C.Listen to music frequently on social media. D.Communicate less with others on Facebook. 3.What is Wenhong Chen's attitude towards Lupien's study? A.Cautious. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Approving. 4.What can be learned from Lupien's suggestion? A.There are many dangers on social media. B.Getting support from e-friends makes us healthier. C.Sharers on Facebook live a happier life than watchers. D.Doing physical exercise helps reduce the levels of cortisol.
Six Chinese survived the tragedy of the Royal Mail Ship Titanic, but disappeared soon after. Now a British documentarian, Arthur Jones, will uncover stories and histories of discrimination. There were eight Chinese between the ages of 24 and 37 on the Titanic, sharing one 59-pound third-class ticket, but only six survived from its sinking. When they arrived in the United States, they were not helped like the other 705 survivors. Instead they were forced to leave the country within 24 hours because of the Chinese Exclusion Act signed in 1882. Some westerners questioned the six Chinese survivors as stowaways and claimed that they survived because they secretly climbed on the lifeboat or dressed as women to board lifeboats. But after visiting foreign documents, museums and cooperating with American and Chinese historians, Jones believes they did not do anything disgraceful in order to survive the disaster. ''This is not only a story about the survivors of Titanic, but also a story of a group of brave Chinese people exploring the outside world at that time, '' he said. When the ship hit an iceberg, like other third-class passengers the eight Chinese were released from the locked gates at last, but not allowed to board the lifeboat. Luckily, four of them boarded a small broken boat, and one was rescued by another lifeboat. Another one, Fang Lang, floated on a piece of wooden board in the sea. The only returning lifeboat saved him from freezing. To restore their real stories, Jones and his team found Fang Lang's son in Wisconsin, US. Also, Jones will visit Taishan city in south China's Guangdong province, recorded as the survivors' hometown. The filmmakers also established a website, whoarethesix.com, for more clues. Ordinarily, people think of Titanic as a story of rich white people, but don't know there were people from all over the world, including Chinese. ''Their stories are never told, '' Jones said. The documentary The Six is expected to be released in China late this year. 1.What can we learn about the Chinese Exclusion Act? A.It put Chinese at disadvantage. B.It was completed within 24 hours. C.It aimed to help Chinese passengers. D.It forbad Chinese to buy first-class tickets. 2.What might Jones think of the six Chinese survivors? A.Adventurous but dishonest. B.Lucky but disgraceful. C.Brave and innocent. D.Poor and questionable. 3.What does Paragraph 6 mainly talk about? A.Some amazing findings about the survivors. B.Jones and his team's visit to different people. C.Jones’ efforts to restore the stories of the Chinese. D.Some information about the survivors' hometown. 4.What is the purpose of the film The Six? A.Tell the true story of the six Chinese survivors. B.Research into the way the six Chinese survived. C.Criticize American's discrimination against Chinese. D.Describe the hardship of Chinese living in America.

If you have big dreams, you have to keep on trying in order to make them come true. Here are five tips that might help you. ● 1.If you really want to do it, then, ask yourself a question: Do I really have any talent for this? This question is important because you don't want to waste your energy on something in which you're not talented. ● Now think about how you are going to achieve this. Do you have to study? Write down the answer, and keep it where you can always see it, so that it will always keep you motivated. ● Know what makes successful people successful. Many people say that looking back is meaningless because it can neither change the past nor bring it back to life, but I disagree as I enjoy the sense of nostalgia (怀旧感), which can remind me of how life used to be when I was younger. Don't get me wrong, however. I'm not one of those who love to talk ad nauseam about "the good old days". As we know, there are moments when the past springs into the present. It's often a smell that will remind me of a particular place or person. A perfume, the scent of a flower, baking bread, bonfires...they all create an instant picture. For me it is the smell of a freshly painted room. We moved so many times when I was younger and each time the first thing my parents would do is decorate our bedrooms. The windows would be kept open to get rid of the smell of the paint but it would always linger on (留存) for days. Even today it fills me with a sense of new beginnings. Those memories are fleeting (飞逝). But when I visit the seaside resort where we used to spend many of our family holidays, I can replay entire days in my head. I can vividly remember the weather, the salty smell of the sea, our dogs playing in the water, an ice cream and that feeling of exhaustion after a day in the fresh air. Although having many photos of those days, I rarely look at them as I prefer to allow my memory to create the pictures. Today we can so easily capture (捕捉) the present with phones and cameras, upload the images and share that moment with our friends online. But, for me, that somehow takes away the unique connection. 1.The underlined part "ad nauseam" in Paragraph 1 may be replaced by . A.wisely B.endlessly C.simply D.honestly 2.According to the writer, a freshly painted room represents . A.a new start B.a new home C.another move D.another holiday 3.Where is the passage most likely from? A.A magazine. B.A guidebook. C.A book review. D.A science fiction. 4.How does the writer feel about the past? A.Dull. B.Bitter. C.Unforgettable. D.Regretful.
During my first year in college I was forced to do something I didn't want to do: Plan a budget. With great resentment (愤慨) for 6 months I used pens to mark my expenses into 10 different categories. I then came up with a monthly average for each category. It was not until a decade later that I realized the simple exercise of learning to manage money is the best investment. For most of you, college may be the first time you'll be managing money on your own, and it's easy to blow past your college budget. But overspending could leave you broke or worse, buried in debt. According to Edvisors, 64% of college students have run out of money before the end of the semester. And the consequence is that it will take them the following several years to pay back that big amount. Before sharing with you my approaches 10 dealing with the situation, I'd like to make you aware of something first. Based on researches, over-spenders mainly fall into one of the following categories. a. Image spenders use money in highly visible ways, caring much about their appearance. Their motto is "If I look beautiful, I am beautiful." b. Compulsive (难控制的) shoppers use shopping as a distraction (分心) from unwanted negative feelings. Whenever down, they purchase to "drown" the bad feeling. c. Bargain-hunting spenders care more about "getting the deal". Their satisfaction comes from the bargaining process or grabbing the bargains. 1.What did the writer do in college? A.She never made both ends meet. B.She recorded the money she spent. C.She enjoyed making investment. D.She had to buy things she disliked. 2.What is the second paragraph mainly about? A.A plan of making a budget. B.The danger of overspending. C.A style of paying off debts. D.The value of attending college. 3.What do compulsive shoppers and bargain-hunting spenders have in common? A.Paying great attention to their appearance. B.Seeing the harm of overspending. C.Satisfying themselves by spending on food. D.Buying too many unwanted items. 4.What may probably be mentioned next by the writer? A.Ways to manage money. B.Examples of success. C.Consequences of overspending. D.Secrets of happy life .
Solar cars aren't so familiar to us as solar water heaters on top of buildings. However, they're already in races. Solar-powered cars, to be exact, are powered by solar cells that convert (转换) solar energy into electricity. Every few years a collection of strange-looking low black vehicles gather in Australia for the World Solar Challenge, a solar-powered car race covering 3,020 kilometer from Darwin to Adelaide. Various teams from around the world will join in the race, most of which are sponsored (赞助) by universities and companies. The most successful team in the past decade has been a Dutch team from Delft University. Another team, consisting of Hawaiian high school students, was the subject of a famous film, Race the Sun. The solar-powered cars are allowed to drive through the Outback, the remote and arid areas in the centre of the country in the World Solar Challenge. averaging over 90 km/hr. The purpose of the race is to promote the development of solar-powered cars. This aim has been more than realized, as solar technology has improved so much since the first race in 1987 that the cars can now go well over the legal speed limits. In fact, new rules have been introduced to reduce speeds. The new aim for solar powered vehicles makers is to develop cars larger and more comfortable than the racing models. In December, Swiss teacher Louis Palmer completed a 17-month, 52,000 km trip around the world in a "solar taxi". His three-wheeled car pulled a trailer with solar cells and batteries. Palmer's solar car can travel 300 km on a single charge, and reach the speed of 90 km/hr. The prototype (原型) was expensive but he hopes that, if mass produced, it would sell for around 10,000 Euros. 1.According to Paragraph 1, solar-powered cars are . A.invented in Australia B.used as taxis in daily life C.powered by electricity D.produced in large numbers 2.The passage shows the World Solar Challenge . A.takes place every year B.is sponsored by universities C.aims to develop solar cars D.features cheap and comfortable cars 3.What do we know about Louis Palmer? A.He's the winner of the race this year. B.He's travelled around the world by air. C.His solar car can travel 300 km per hour. D.His solar car cost more than 10, 000 Euros. 4.What is the best title for the passage? A.Solar-powered Cars B.Race the Sun C.Car Race in Your Dream D.Future Transportation
Now come some money-saving ideas from a web forum (论坛), which may help you save a penny in the UK. Nancy: Many people nowadays seem to buy clothes, wear then a couple of times and then give them to charity shops so that's where I do my shopping. You can pet some cheap but really good stuff and you know you’re your money is helping other people so it's a win-win situation in my opinion. Ailsa: I'm a student and I have a part time job during term time and then work full-time during the holidays. You really can find some good bargains at the end of the day when a lot of food is reduced because it has reached its sell-by date (保质期). It's amazing how much you can save that way. Gary: I must admit I don't think much about how or where I shop but I try to save money on electricity and gas in the house. Instead of turning up the temperature I put on another sweater and I close the doors. I encourage roommates to turn off the lights when they leave and we don't leave the TV or computer on standby (待机) as that uses up unnecessary energy. Matthew: I've just moved to the UK. Someone told me about the "freecycle" scheme and I've managed to get almost everything without spending any money. Basically, you advertise what you don't need on its website for someone to collect it. No one makes any money so it really is a good exchange. 1.What's the saving idea shared by Nancy and Ailsa? A.Using the student card for discounts. B.Buying things at lower prices. C.Getting food from the charity. D.Saving money by earning 2.According to the passage, where can you get something you need for free? A.In a charity shop. B.In a local supermarket. C.On the freecycle website. D.On the university campus. 3.Who may be most interested in this passage? A.Business people who travel a lot. B.People who care about education. C.Women who like following fashion. D.Students who plan to study abroad.
