A new international study shows that some peopled biological clock plays a powerful role for their life expectancy, regardless of lifestyle choices.

Published in the latest issue of Aging on Wednesday, the study has found the most definitive evidence to explain why some people keep healthy lifestyle but die younger than others.

Geneticist Steve Horvath from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), led a team of 65 scientists around the world to record age-related changes to human DNA, analyse blood samples collected from 13,000 people and estimate their lifespan.

A higher biological age, regardless of actual age, consistently predicts an earlier death, the study says.

“You get people who are vegan, sleep 10 hours a day, have a low-stress job, and still end up dying young,” Horvath said in a statement. “We have shown some people have a faster innate aging rate.”

The findings discovered that 5 percent of the population ages at a faster biological rate, which translated to a roughly 50 percent higher than average risk of death at any age.

“The great hope is that we find anti-aging interventions that would slow your innate aging rate,” Horvath said, adding that “this is an important milestone to realizing this dream.

1.How was the study conducted?

A.By collecting and analyzing data

B.By interviewing lots of people

C.By researching previous studies

D.By studying different lifestyles

2.Some people keep healthy lifestyle but die younger than others because       .

A.the biological clock is not powerful enough

B.the most definitive evidence has been found

C.they have a higher actual age than others

D.they ages at a relatively faster biological rate

3.According to the study, it can be inferred that       .

A.people who keep healthy lifestyle tend to live longer

B.people’s lifespan can be predicted by their age

C.anti-aging interventions have proved to slow the innate aging rate

D.5 percent of people are believed to have a faster innate aging rate

Young sunflowers turn and swing every day. New findings add to evidence that the plants are animal-like.

Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field, in pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.

By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun. He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.

The indoor plants did start tracking the “sun” again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24-hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.

When sunflowers track the sun, the east sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way. The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sunward side of the plant during the day or on the other side at night. A plant growth-regulating hormone (激素), called auxin, appears to be a key driver.

The “dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures (成熟) and its flowers open up. At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.

“Bees like warm flowers.” Harmer said, adding that the bees are cold-blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.

“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said “We’re currently testing this idea.”

1.Why did Harmer do the experiment on sunflowers?

A.To see how sunflowers grow up.

B.To show what sunflowers’ genes are.

C.To study why sunflowers track the sun.

D.To check if sunflowers swing in cloudy days.

2.What does the underlined word “staking” probably mean in Paragraph 3?

A.Tracking. B.Fining.

C.Growing. D.Searching.

3.What is the result of sunflowers being stopped from moving?

A.They will produce a number of new genes.

B.They will grow faster than usual.

C.They won’t swing back though set free.

D.They won’t grow well.

4.What is the advantage of sunflowers’ dance to the sun?

A.They attract more insects. B.They save more energy.

C.They mature more rapidly. D.They produce more flowers.

Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren’t written until the final threat.

I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working towards her master’s degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student (技校学生). They’re called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid, ” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls (光荣榜).

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don’t have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it, but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.

Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbours and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don’t need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

1.What used to be the author’s hope for his son?

A.To avoid becoming his clone. B.To resemble him in appearance.

C.To develop in a different direction. D.To reach the author’s unachieved goals.

2.What can we learn about the author’s children?

A.His daughter docs better in school.

B.His daughter has got a master’s degree.

C.His son tried hard to finish homework.

D.His son couldn’t write his book reports.

3.The author let his son repair the car because he believed that       .

A.his son had the ability to fix it B.it would save him much time

C.it wouldn’t cause him any more loss D.other motorheads would come to help

4.What did the author realize in the end?

A.It is unwise to expect your child to follow your path.

B.It is important for one to make the honor roll.

C.Architects play a more important role than builders.

D.Motorheads have greater ability than office workers.

Music most likely isn’t the largest reason motivating where you choose to dine. 1. And according to Nations Restaurant News, if they aren’t thinking about music, they should be.

In a recent post about music’s role in restaurant design, author Mark Brandau details the different ways sound influences sales, how different times of the day call for their own soundtrack and how restaurants cater to certain diners. Here are a few “notes” to keep in mind the next time you need to pick a restaurant:

It’s someone’s job to build playlists. Restaurant owners hire experts to build music playlists which don’t include commercials and need to be scored. These paid-for playlists are required for different times of the day. 2.

What you hear at lunch won’t be what you hear at dinner. And what you hear after dinner will be something entirely different. 3. In that case, soft music maybe key to helping them create the atmosphere.

You probably have heard some songs before. 4. Ambiance Radio offers playlists for Little Greek, in Florida. and also Schlotzsky’s and Union Square Café, in New York City. Vojnovic, who started his career at Chili’s, said that years ago, instrumental tapes of background music were changed only once per quarter.

5. Brandau explains that some restaurants prefer to pump up the volume (音量), not to annoy certain groups of customers, but to stay true to their main guests. If college students are a restaurant’s target consumers, the restaurant may deliberately pay music older crowds consider uninviting.

A.Music builds restaurants’ brands.

B.Music helps restaurants choose diners.

C.Some restaurants aim to increase late-night business.

D.Restaurants maybe using the same music providers.

E.You go to a certain restaurant due to its various songs.

F.Therefore, there’s enough variety to avoid repeating songs.

G.However, restaurant owners put much thought into what they play in their restaurants.

Scientists have developed a new type of smart bandage (绷带) that can signal the type of bacterial (细菌的) infection it’s protecting, just like a traffic light, as well as release the right type of drugs on demand. The traffic light system works just like this: Green means no bacteria or a low concentration of bacteria, yellow means drug-sensitive (DS) bacteria responsive to standard antibiotics (抗生素) and causes antibiotic release, and red means drug-resistant (DR) bacteria that need extra help to be wiped out.

In testing the bandage on mice, the research team was able to successfully treat both DS and DR infections using the new method. However, the common methods of sensing resistance are limited by time, the requirement for professional personnel, and expensive instruments. Moreover, the abuse of antibiotics causes the accelerated process of bacterial resistance.

It’s easy to see how a simple bandage and light could overcome some of these limitations. Treatment doesn’t have to wait for a doctor to make a diagnosis, and the bandage can get the right sort of drugs applied at the earliest opportunity. What’s more, the person wearing the bandage gets real-time feedback on what’s happening with the infection, if there’s an infection at all. The researchers say it offers numerous benefits over existing treatments that make use of light, including photodynamic therapy or PDT.

We’ve been seeing quite a few upgrades to the traditional bandage in recent years, thanks to advances in science — like the nanofiber mesh that attracts bacteria and draws some of it out, speeding up the healing process. Then there’s the novel bandage for treating burns, which stops bacteria from multiplying and lowers the risk of infection.

The more work that a bandage can do while it’s protecting a wound, the better. Efforts to improve bandages continue and now we've got a bandage that not only releases antibiotics, but also tells the patient exactly what’s going on too.

1.What is the smart bandage mainly designed to do?

A.Avoid the use of antibiotics. B.Clear out harmful bacteria.

C.Detect bacterial infections. D.Increase treatment options.

2.What is the advantage of the smart bandage?

A.It saves much time and cost. B.It removes the risk of infection.

C.It prevents the bacterial resistance. D.It improves doctor-patient relationship.

3.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.Traditional bandages are out of use now.

B.More smart bandages will be developed.

C.Progress in science calls for more research.

We’ve known that sitting for long periods of time every day has countless health consequences, like a higher risk of heart disease. But now a new study has found that sitting is also bad for your brain.

A study published last week, conducted by Dr. Prabha Siddarth at the University of California, showed that sedentary(久坐的)behavior is associated with reduced thickness of the medial temporal lobe(中颞叶), a brain area that is critical to learning and memory.

The researchers asked a group of 35 healthy people, ages 45 to 70, about their activity levels and the average number of hours each day spent sitting and then scanned their brains. They found that the subjects who reported sitting for longer periods had the thinnest medial temporal lobes. It means that the more time you spend in a chair the worse it is for your brain health, resulting in possible damage to learning and memory.

What is also interesting is that this study did not find a significant association between the level of physical activity and thickness of this brain area, suggesting that exercise, even severe exercise, may not be enough to protect you from the harmful effects of sitting.

It then surprisingly turned out that you don’t even have to move much to enhance cognition(认知); just standing will do the trick. For example, two groups of subjects were asked to complete a test while either sitting or standing. Participants are presented with conflicting stimuli(刺激), like the word “green” in blue ink, and asked to name the color. Subjects thinking on their feet beat those who sat by a 3-milicond margin.

The cognitive effects of severe physical exercise are well known. But the possibility that standing more and sitting less improves brain health could lower the bar for everyone.

I know, this all runs counter to received ideas about deep thought, from our grade school teachers, who told us to sit down and focus, to Rodin’s famous “Thinker,” seated with chin on hand.

They were wrong. You can now all stand up.

1.What can we infer from Paragraphs 3 and 4?

A.Severe exercise can lessen the damage of sitting.

B.Severe exercise can greatly improve our brain health.

C.Sedentary behavior will possibly damage our brain.

D.Brain health has nothing to do with sedentary behavior.

2.What does the underlined word “margin” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.blank. B.edge.

B.Sitting is better when we think.

C.Exercise more can improve our cognition.

4.The passage mainly tells us ________.

A.people tend to sit while thinking

B.standing more can make our brain healthier

C.physical exercise can improve our brain health

D.sedentary behavior leads to countless health problems

Laurie Santos greeted her Yale University students with slips of paper that explained: No class today.

It was mid-semester (学期). With exams and papers coming, everyone was exhausted and stressed. There was one rule: They couldn’t use the one hour and a quarter of unexpected free time to study, and they had to just enjoy it. Nine students hugged her. Two burst into tears.

Santos, a professor of psychology, had planned to give a lecture about what researchers have learned about how important time is to happiness, but she created a special class on the psychology of living a joyful, meaningful life and she wanted the lessons to stick. All semester, she explained why we think the way we do. Then, she challenged students to use that knowledge to change their own lives.

On that spring afternoon, nearly a quarter of the undergraduate students were enjoying an unexpected break at the same time. No, not just enjoying it-really loving the gift they had been given. Skyler Robinson, a sophomore, had been confused for a moment by all the possibilities it opened up. He felt very, very happy. Then, he took a nap. “That nap,” he said, “was fantastic.”

Santos designed this class after she realized, as the head of a residential college at Yale, that many students were stressed out and unhappy, struggling through long days that seemed to her far more crushing (惨重的) and joyless than her own college years.

Santos said students were most skeptical of the idea that good grades aren’t essential to happiness. And when she joked she was going to teach them that by giving everyone “D”, she was flooded with calls from frightened students and parents. Santos told them she was creating a center for the good life at the college she leads at Yale. As for the good life, she told them they already know how to live it-they just have to practice and put in hard work.

So many students have told her the class changed their lives. “If you’re really grateful, show me that.” she told them. “Change the culture.”

1.What did Santos ask her Yale students to do that day?

A.Study for the coming exams.

B.Enjoy the free time in her class.

C.Apply their way of thinking to life.

D.Realize the importance of time.

2.What does Santos think of her Yale students?

A.They care nothing about grades but happiness.

B.They are stressed into a hopeless generation.

C.They are living a joyful and meaningful life.

D.They suffer great pressure from learning.

3.How was Santos’ special class that day?

A.Popular. B.Discouraging.

C.Humorous. D.dull

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Yale has a special course about social life.

B.Yale teaches its students about good grades.

C.Yale has a course all about living happily.

D.Yale helps its students reduce learning pressure.

I had never been more anxious in my life. I had just spent the last three endless hours trying to get to the airport so that I could travel home. Now, as I watched the bus driver set my luggage on the airport sidewalk, I realized that my anxiety had only just begun.

This was my first visit alone to the international terminal of the airport, and nothing was familiar. I couldn’t make sense of any of the signs. Where was the check-in counter? Where should I take my luggage? I had no idea where to go, feeling as if I were deaf and blind and stupid. I began to panic. What time was it? Where was my plane? I had to find help because I couldn’t be late.

I tried to ask a passing businessman for help, but my words all came out wrong. He just frowned and walked away. What had happened? I had been in this country for a whole semester, and I couldn’t even remember how to ask for directions. This was awful! Another bus arrived at the terminal, and the passengers came out carrying all sorts of luggage. Here was my chance! I could follow them to the right place, and I would not have to say a word.

I dragged my enormous suitcase behind me and followed the group. We finally reached the elevators. Oh, no! They all fit in it, but there was not enough room for me. I watched in despair as the elevator doors closed. I was abandoned again! I had no idea what to do next. I got on the elevator when it returned and stared at all the buttons. Which one could it be? I pressed button 3, because I thought I saw those passengers pressed 3, though it was no more than a quick glance. The elevator slowly climbed up to the third floor and came to a stop. There were no check-in counters! I looked around shyly, only to find an elderly man standing at the corner. He was an airport employee.

How to Develop Appropriate Self-Confidence

Under most circumstances having self-confidence is a good thing. 1. It is this strong sense of confidence that allows them to go out in the world and reach for their goals.

But can you have too much self-confidence? 2. In most cases, knowing your strengths and having the assuredness to go out and take risks are admirable qualities. But when this confidence makes you inflexible, opposed to trying new things, and incapable of listening to others, it can become harmful to success and well-being. So what can people do to ensure that their self-confidence is realistic, authentic and socially appropriate?

3. Whether you are evaluating your own success or offering praise to your children, try to place a greater emphasis on the work that went into the task rather than just focus on how things turned out. You cannot always control how things go, but you can control the amount of work you put into achieving your goals.

Keep learning new things. Even if you are highly confident about your skills in an area, keep looking for new challenges. It is easy to become overconfident if you think you know everything there is to know about a subject. Finding new challenges to overcome does sharpen your skills. 4.

Listen to what others have to say. Overconfidence can sometimes cause people to become rigid and even arbitrary. Instead of assuming that your way is the right or only way, try to keep an open mind. 5. However, it is important to listen in order to gain a new perspective.

A.Focus on the effort, not the outcome.

B.Is overconfidence definitely a good thing?

C.You might not always agree with other people.

D.Having too much self-confidence is beneficial to us.

E.Are you teaching in a different way and extremely excellent?

F.Confident people tend to be more successful in a wide variety of fields.

G.Finding new challenges also reminds you that there're fresh ways of thinking about things.

Tests have shown robots can diagnose heart problems in as little as four seconds, as a review of artificial intelligence Al finds machines are now as good at spotting illness as doctors.

Analyzing a patient's heart function on a cardiac MRI (心脏磁共振成像)scan currently takes doctors around 13 minutes. But a new trial by University College London UCL showed an Al program could read the scans in less time with equal accuracy. There are approximately 150,000 such scans performed in the UK each year, and researchers estimate that fully using Al to read them could save 54 clinician-days (临床天数)at each cardiac centre per year. So it can make up for the shortage of doctors.

It is hoped that Al where computer systems are able to learn from data to identify new patterns with minimal human intervention will transform medicine by helping doctors spot dis- eases such as heart disease and cancer faster and earlier. However, most scans are still read by specially trained doctors.

Dr Charlotte Manisty, who led the UCL research, said, "Cardiovascular MRI offers in- comparable image quality for assessing heart structure and function. However, current manual  analysis remains basic and outdated. Automated machine techniques offer the potential to change this and completely improve efficiency and accuracy, and we look forward to further research that could confirm the superiority to human analysis."

She added, “Our dataset of patients with a range of heart disease who received scans enabled us to demonstrate that the greatest sources of measurement errors arise from human factors. This indicates that automated techniques are at least as good as humans, with the potential soon to be  'super-human'—transforming clinical and research measurement precision."

Professor Alastair Denniston said, "Within those handful of high-quality studies, we found that by deep learning Al could indeed detect disease ranging from cancer to eye disease as accurately as health professionals. But it's important to note that it did not absolutely exceed human professional diagnosis. ”

1.Which of the following can best describe this Al program?

A.Time-consuming. B.Environmentally friendly.

C.Extremely unpractical. D.Labor-saving.

2.What is Charlotte Manisty's expectation of automated machine techniques?

A.To treat eye disease faster and earlier.

B.To analyze heart disease efficiently and accurately.

C.To combine manual with automated analysis.

D.To confirm heart structure and function.

3.What did Alastair Denniston say about Al?

A.It would be super-human soon.

B.It couldn't completely replace expert doctors.

C.It would correct professionals' measurement errors.

D.It couldn't detect cancer as accurately as health professionals.

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A.Al has many shortcomings in practice.

B.Al totally shows its superiority to human analysis.

C.Al can reduce medical errors arising from human factors.

D.Al can diagnose heart disease as well as doctors in less time.

You should try your best to create your own family library so that you and your family are always learning. "It is a great mistake to think that education is finished when young people leave school. Education is never finished even if you grow older," said Mrs Child in The Mother's Book. "Collecting a library of books in your home is really helpful to your family. ”

"What is really interesting about having so many books in your home is that a book you purchase has a chapter about the deeper knowledge of your favorite subject at school," said a university graduate. Researchers in a study tries to identify what parents do has an influence on how well their children do on standardized tests. One positive aspect they find is the availability of a large number of books at home. This has a stronger connection, especially when you read to your children every day. The more books your older kids have access to at home, the more likely they are just to be reading for fun, rather than having to wait for weekly trips to the library.

John Henry, one educated parent, said, "I have been homeschooling my children using the philosophy of A Thomas Jeffer son Education. This philosophy of learning is based on the reading of classic books. ” Clinton Fadiman said, "When you reread a classic, you do not see more in the book than you did before you see more in you than before. " Classic books also make you smarter and wiser! The wisdom comes in the examples in the lives of the characters.

"It is within your power to guide your youth in their reading and to cultivate in their hearts a desire for good books. It is the most unfortunate if a person is not possessed with the desire for good reading. The reading habit, like charity, should begin at home," said Mrs Child.

1.What does the author mainly want to show in paragraph 2?

A.Kids don't need to go to the library any longer.

B.Parents should set a good example at home.

C.It's necessary to create a family library.

2.How does the author explain the effect of reading classic books at home in paragraph 3?

A.By quoting others ’words. B.By questioning.

C.By imagination. D.By analyzing research data.

3.What can we learn from what Mrs Child said?

A.East or west, home is best.

B.One is never too old to learn.

C.He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.

D.Charity is the soul, rather than the virtues of hand.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Where to Store Your Favorite Books at Home?

B.When to Read the Classic Books to Your Children?

C.Which Is Better, a Home Library or a Public Library?

D.Why Not Have Your Own Library of Books at Home?

As I drove along the road, a small car flew across the center divider from the opposite direction and crashed into my car head-on, I fainted and was awakened by the ringing of my mobile phone.

I was brought to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital bleeding on from my nose, mouth and legs. But the hospital staff was too busy to attend to me, so I called a friend to tell him about the accident. Some friends arrived very soon and sent me to a private hospital nearby. I saw my injured feet hanging from my body, blue and lifeless, and I begged the doctors to save them at all costs. They calmly promised to do their best.

The doctors made it. After I was discharged, I was given ten months medical leave. My heart sank, knowing that it meant I, a big man, couldn't work. How was I going to support my 65-year-old mother and other family members? I felt completely helpless, but a lot of unexpected blessings came my way. I had many visitors during my 14 days in hospital and when I was recovering at home. Friends and relatives helped me with my banking, insurance or simply came to cheer me up.

When the casts (石膏)were removed, I did not let the sight of my weak legs discourage me. I worked hard at my physiotherapy (物理疗法)with only one aim. After eight months, I was walking without the aid of a walking stick. On February the following year, I returned to my job again. Today, after eight years, I have travelled to many countries as a tour leader.

The accident makes me realize how lives can change in a split second. I value life more, not only of my own but also of everyone I know, and I will always try to help when I know of someone in trouble.

1.What made the author come back to life in the traffic accident?
